60. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>Every year, millions of people suffer a traumatic brain injury (TBI) – whether from a car crash, a fall, or a blow to the head. But despite all the medical tools doctors have at their disposal today, there is still no reliable way to fully protect the brain from the damage that unfolds after the initial impact. Promisingly, therefore, a recent <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC12154391/">scientific review</a> has put the spotlight on a natural compound, coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), suggesting it could potentially play a key role in protecting the brain and supporting recovery. </b></span></span></p>
61. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">When someone experiences a serious blow to the head, the damage doesn’t stop with the impact. The brain’s energy-hungry cells are thrown into chaos and struggle to make the fuel they need to survive. Much of this has to do with the body’s cellular power plants – the mitochondria – which become damaged and leaky, producing harmful molecules known as free radicals. This vicious cycle of poor energy production and oxidative stress can worsen brain swelling, trigger runaway inflammation, and push neurons to self-destruct through processes known as apoptosis and ferroptosis. Standard treatments for TBI focus mainly on stabilizing the patient and relieving pressure on the brain but do little to address the deeper cellular crisis.</span></span></p>
62. <h3><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b>Getting CoQ10 to where it is needed</b></span></span></h3>
63. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Known for decades as an essential compound that helps mitochondria produce energy, CoQ10 also acts as a powerful antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory properties. In other words, it may do exactly what damaged brain cells need: shore up energy production, mop up harmful free radicals, and calm the out-of-control inflammatory response. Studies in animal models of TBI show that giving CoQ10 can reduce brain swelling, lower levels of inflammation, and even limit the spread of cell death in the brain. In experiments involving rats and mice, CoQ10 or its more easily absorbed analogues have helped preserve mitochondria and improved motor skills after injury.</span></span></p>
64. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Despite these promising results, CoQ10 has yet to be tested properly in people with TBI. One reason for this is that CoQ10 is a large, fat-soluble molecule that does not easily cross the blood–brain barrier, the brain’s natural defense system that blocks many substances from entering. This means that even if you swallow large doses of CoQ10, very little may actually reach the brain. Researchers have tried to develop synthetic versions of CoQ10 or deliver the nutrient through intravenous injections, but these approaches have their limits too.</span></span></p>
65. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Intriguingly, therefore, the review highlights a potential workaround: the intranasal route. Research shows that certain compounds can be delivered through the nose, travelling directly along the olfactory and trigeminal nerves into the brain, bypassing the blood-brain barrier altogether. Animal studies hint that CoQ10 analogues delivered intranasally reach brain tissue more efficiently, reduce damage, and improve recovery after brain injury.</span></span></p>
66. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">CoQ10 is already well-known for its benefits beyond the brain. It is commonly used to <a href="https://www.dr-rath-foundation.org/2023/10/coenzyme-q10-the-natural-heart-medicine-that-pharma-doesnt-want-you-to-know-about/">support heart health</a>, and may help reduce <a href="https://www.dr-rath-foundation.org/2020/09/high-coenzyme-q10-levels-may-prevent-muscle-damage-in-pro-football-players/">muscle damage</a> and <a href="https://www.dr-rath-foundation.org/2022/10/coenzyme-q10-may-reduce-fatigue/">fatigue</a>. It even plays a role in ensuring optimum functioning of the <a href="https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8150987/">immune system</a>, which is particularly relevant since people who have suffered a brain injury are at greater risk of developing heart complications due to excessive inflammation. Clearly, therefore, CoQ10 supplementation could have multiple benefits for TBI patients.</span></span></p>
67. <h3><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: large;"><b>The lack of interest from pharma </b></span></span></h3>
68. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">The big question, however, is whether this natural approach will ever get the funding and attention it deserves. So far, no major clinical trials have tested intranasal CoQ10 in TBI patients, and only one small pilot study in ICU trauma patients has hinted that CoQ10 supplementation might reduce inflammation and shorten hospital stays. Given how safe and well-tolerated CoQ10 is – with no serious side effects reported even at very high doses – you may therefore be wondering why scientists aren’t moving faster to explore its full potential. </span></span></p>
69. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">One reason is that CoQ10 cannot be patented in its natural form, thus meaning that drug companies have no interest in investing in expensive clinical trials. This is yet another example of how the pharmaceutical ‘<a href="https://www.dr-rath-foundation.org/2017/08/the-laws-of-the-pharmaceutical-industry/">business with disease</a>’ deliberately overlooks simple, natural molecules – even when they might make a world of difference to patient outcomes.</span></span></p>
70. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;">In its conclusion, the review calls for urgent research to test whether CoQ10 – ideally given through innovative routes like intranasal delivery – could be the missing link in improving recovery after traumatic brain injury. If the animal studies hold true in humans, this vitamin-like compound could potentially become a low-cost, safe, and natural way to protect the brain just when it needs it most. Let’s hope the necessary clinical trials take place soon. </span></span></p>

268. <p>Analyzing four national surveys conducted between February 2020 and October 2024, this study found that the percentage of American adults reporting high confidence in the CDC had dropped sharply by mid-2022. Trust in other major institutions, including the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and state health departments, also fell significantly, highlighting the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on public opinion.</p>
269. <p>Interestingly, the study found that trust in local health actors fared better over time. Although confidence in local health departments and personal doctors fell during the early pandemic years, it improved between 2022 and 2024, with trust in local health departments increasing by 19 percent and confidence in personal doctors rising by 5 percent. Meanwhile, public confidence in the White House’s handling of health crises also saw a modest increase, growing from 29 percent in 2020 to 39 percent by 2024.</p>

333. <p>Published in the <em>Environmental Health</em> journal, this study found that low doses of glyphosate cause multiple types of cancer in rats, including rare and aggressive tumors. Scientists exposed rats to glyphosate and two commercial glyphosate-based weed killers at levels currently deemed safe by regulators. The results showed significant increases in both benign and malignant tumors across numerous organs and tissues, with some cancers occurring unusually early.</p>
334. <p>The research team observed rare malignancies such as leukemia, liver, ovarian, and nervous system cancers arising at a rate and timing unprecedented in historical control groups. Around 40 percent of leukemia-related deaths in the treated animals occurred before one year of age – equivalent to a human age of under 35-40 years. These findings add weight to the International Agency for Research on Cancer’s conclusion in 2015 that glyphosate is “<a href="https://www.iarc.who.int/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/MonographVolume112-1.pdf">probably carcinogenic to humans</a>,” and align with earlier studies linking glyphosate exposure to various cancers and toxic effects, including microbiome disruption and endocrine toxicity.</p>
335. <p>The researchers say their evidence should prompt regulators worldwide to reconsider safety thresholds for glyphosate use. They also warn that the herbicide’s effects extend beyond cancer to potential neurodevelopmental harm, with future studies planned to explore links to neurological disorders.</p>

399. <p>The UK Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has recently seen a rise in reports of pancreatic problems, with nearly 400 cases linked to GLP-1 receptor agonist drugs such as Mounjaro (tirzepatide), Wegovy and Ozempic (semaglutide) – some of which have been fatal. Acute pancreatitis is a sudden inflammation of the pancreas that can cause severe abdominal pain, nausea and fever, often requiring hospital treatment.</p>
400. <p>According to patient information leaflets, pancreatitis is listed as an “uncommon” side-effect of the injections, affecting around one in 100 patients. However, more than a quarter of the total cases have been reported just this year, with Mounjaro accounting for almost half of all the reports. An MHRA spokesperson said they are seeing an increase in both the use of these drugs and related reports of acute pancreatitis, raising concerns about whether certain patients might be at higher risk.</p>

A growing body of research is exposing how everyday plastic food containers and utensils are quietly contaminating our bodies with tiny fragments known as microplastics and nanoplastics. Growing evidence suggests this may be contributing to a silent public health crisis.</b></span></span></span></p>
450. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-GB">In a <a href="https://www.nature.com/articles/s41538-025-00470-3">new study</a>, Swiss scientists confirm what many people have long suspected: plastics, particularly those used in food packaging and preparation, are shedding tiny particles that don&#8217;t just pass through our body – they can lodge in critical organs including the brain, heart, lungs, and even the placenta. These fragments have previously been linked to a <a href="https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/38460665/">range of health conditions</a>, including lung cancer, asthma and hypersensitivity pneumonitis, neurological symptoms such as fatigue and dizziness, inflammatory bowel disease, and even disturbances in gut microbiota. </span></span></span></p>
451. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-GB">Conducted by the Zurich-based Food Packaging Forum in collaboration with experts from Switzerland and Norway, the new study reviews 103 previous investigations into so-called &#8216;food contact articles&#8217; (FCAs). These include common plastic items like bottles, cups, baby feeders, cling film, chopping boards, trays, and even teabags. The researchers found consistent evidence that microplastics are released during normal use – such as opening a plastic cap, slicing food on a plastic board, or even just steeping a teabag in boiling water. Particularly troubling is the discovery that baby bottles and related accessories also shed them. Yet despite this, regulators and public health authorities have done little to address the problem. </span></span></span></p>
452. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-GB">Most of these fragments are made from polyethylene terephthalate (PET) or its recycled counterpart rPET – petroleum-based materials that take centuries to degrade and are now found in oceans, soil, and the human body. They have also been detected in human blood, the gut, brain tissue, breast milk, and unborn children. </span></span></span></p>
453. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-GB">Even more worrying is that these particles act as sponges for other toxic substances. Because plastics repel water, they easily bind to other dangerous compounds – including mercury, pesticides, and dioxins – delivering a toxic payload directly into the body. Once inside, they can accumulate in fatty tissues, adding to the body’s chemical burden over time. </span></span></span></p>
454. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-GB">Despite mounting evidence, authorities remain slow to act. Calls from independent scientists for stricter testing and regulatory oversight are routinely ignored or watered down – often due to pressure from the powerful petrochemical and food packaging industries. Unsurprisingly, the pharmaceutical sector, which stands to benefit from diseases linked to chronic exposure, has shown no interest in promoting prevention or detoxification strategies. </span></span></span></p>
455. <p><span style="font-family: Arial, serif;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><span lang="en-GB">This problem reflects a broader failure of modern public health policy: a system that permits – and arguably even encourages – widespread human exposure to synthetic chemicals, then monetises the resulting illnesses. While a complete cessation of plastic use may for now be impossible, with the cost of the alternatives in many cases presenting a significant barrier, trying to reduce our exposure over time seems sensible. </span></span></span></p>

Initially approved for use in Britain’s National Health Service (NHS) in 2011, this AstraZeneca drug was initially thought to significantly reduce deaths after a heart attack. However, new scrutiny has cast serious doubt on its effectiveness, with experts now saying that key clinical trials – central to the drug’s approval in both the UK and the United States – may have contained significant misreporting of results. In particular, researchers argue that the main outcome measures used to prove the drug’s effectiveness were inaccurately presented in a leading medical journal.</p>
523. <p><em>The BMJ</em> investigation found that around 25 percent of platelet readings – used to assess how well ticagrelor prevents blood clots – were missing from the trial data submitted to the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). 588. <p>A joint report by the World Food Program (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) attributes Zimbabwe’s improvement to favorable climatic conditions that supported a better harvest season. Alongside Zimbabwe, several other countries in East and Southern Africa, including Malawi, Mozambique, and Zambia, have also been delisted due to reduced weather extremes and improved agricultural outcomes.</p>
589. <p>While the removal marks progress, aid agencies caution that Zimbabwe’s recovery is still fragile. Last year, approximately 7.6 million Zimbabweans needed humanitarian assistance due to the worst drought in four decades. The FAO and WFP warn that any resurgence of climatic or economic shocks could easily reverse its recent gains. Similar concerns are raised for other delisted nations, including Lebanon, where the improvement stems from a lull in military operations rather than lasting structural change.</p>
590. <p>Globally, the outlook remains grim, with 13 countries still classified as current or emerging hunger hotspots. Areas such as Sudan, Palestine, South Sudan, and Haiti are considered “highest concern” zones, facing extreme risk of famine. Ongoing conflict, funding shortfalls, and restricted humanitarian access are worsening conditions in places like the Democratic Republic of Congo and Myanmar. FAO and WFP leaders are therefore calling for urgent international action and investment to protect livelihoods, support food production, and prevent further deterioration in these high-risk areas.</p>
