The Virginia Counselors Association is proud to announce our annual Leadership Academy.  It is designed to be a foundational training experience for emerging 2025-2026 VCA leaders.
 
Who should attend?
Ø  Each VCA Chapter & Division are encouraged to send two members from their 2025-26 Executive Board ($50.00 fee per person)
 
Ø  VCA Executive Board members and designated committee chairs serving on the 2025-26 VCA Board of Directors ($50 fee covered by VCA, email vcaoffice@cox.net)
 
Ø  2025 VCA Michele Dowdy Emerging Leader Student Grant Winners ($50 fee covered by VCA, email vcaoffice@cox.net)
 
Ø  2025 VCAF Pete Warren Scholars ($50 fee covered by VCA Foundation, email vcaoffice@cox.net)
 
Registration includes lodging Friday (double occupancy), Friday afternoon breakout snacks & Saturday breakfast items, afternoon breakout snacks and lunch.
(All costs are based on room sharing. Participants may indicate desired roommates when registering online.  There is an option on the registration form where participants can register for a private room; however, an additional fee of $105 applies. While basic ethics education provides foundational knowledge, this session offers a data-driven approach that grounds ethical decision-making in real-world consequences and Virginia-specific regulatory standards. This presentation reveals findings from a comprehensive national study sponsored by the American Association of State Counseling Boards (AASCB), examining disciplinary complaints across state licensing boards. Drawing from dozens of complaint records representing various violations nationwide, we identify the most prevalent ethical breaches and the sanctions that resulted for licensed counselors. Beyond identifying violations, this session provides practical prevention tools specifically tailored to Virginia & #39’s regulatory environment, including early warning signs, high-risk practice situations, and ethical decision-making frameworks. Participants will learn to recognize the gradual erosion patterns that lead to violations, understand how situational pressures contribute to ethical lapses, and develop systems for maintaining ethical practice throughout their careers. He is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and a Licensed Substance Abuse Treatment Practitioner, in Virginia. He served as the Interim Director of the School of Education, from 2023-2025 and is the Associate Director for Faculty Affairs. Gerard has been a disaster mental health volunteer with the American Red Cross since 2002, and has supported numerous national, state, and local disasters. He was instrumental in helping to coordinate the counseling response to the tragic shootings at Virginia Tech in 2007 and was the lead author of Virginia Tech’s first Disaster Behavioral Health Plan. He is a consultant for the Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime, helping communities and campuses that have been impacted by mass violence with the immediate response and on-going recovery. He has helped many institutions prepare for crisis response, and works frequently with counselors who have responded, providing debriefing and supportive services. His focus is on building resilience in the individuals (including counselors) and communities that are affected by disasters. His published work includes articles exploring the experiences of professional counselors and clinicians in the aftermath of natural disasters such as the Gulf Coast hurricanes Katrina and Rita and traumatic events such as the shootings at Virginia Tech. He was the chair of the ACA Taskforce on Crisis Response Planning and has authored several articles on counselor wellness and resilience, particularly when working in disaster mental health. Since joining the faculty at Virginia Tech, Dr. Lawson has published his research in prestigious journals including the Journal of Counseling and Development, The Professional Counselor, Counselor Education and Supervision, and The Clinical Supervisor. He has presented at national and international conferences on a range of topics including counselor wellness, crisis response and resilience, and clinical supervision. Gerard was the Principal Investigator on $1.6 million in grants from the National Institutes of Justice, to explore influences on the School to Prison Pipeline, and continues to serve the Commonwealth of Virginia, leading the team that administers the School Climate and Working Conditions Survey annually. He has been involved in training and consulting across the country to help improve educational support for students, and to keep kids in the classroom and out of the courtroom. Dr. Lawson serves on the Virginia Board of Counseling, and is a past-president of the American Association of State Counseling Boards, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, and the Virginia Counselors Association. Roney, Ed.D. LPC. Dr. Lakesha Roney is a native of Dinwiddie County, Virginia and graduate of Dinwiddie High School. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Virginia State University, Master of Education in Counseling from Virginia State University, and a Doctor of Education Counseling Psychology Concentration in Education and Supervision from Argosy University. She has been Licensed Professional Counselor in the Commonwealth Virginia since 2005 and Registered Supervisor for LPC, LMFT, LSAPT, and CSAC; ACS Certified Clinical Supervisor. Dr. Roney is the owner of a private practice Inner Self Counseling and Consultation LLC since 2007. Inner Self offers a wide variety of outpatient counseling services, consulting, trainings, and clinical supervision. As a Clinical Supervisor, she helps organizations with growth of clinical and program development. In her role, she assesses what the clinical and program needs are for the organization and determines how to make them work more efficiently, improve quality, and increase revenue potential. She has experience working with trauma, anxiety, depression, and mood disorders. Joan conducts presentations, consultations, trainings, and workshops for various groups, organizations, and companies. Joan's presentation style is the power of utilizing empathetic and practical examples to disseminate and assimilate complex mental health conditions. Joan’s clinical and counselor-educator approach is integrated and meets the audience, client, and student where they are in their developmental and learning journey. Rebecca Belton, PhD, LPC - Rebecca Belton is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She earned her master’s degree in clinical mental health counseling from Grace College, and her PhD in counselor education & supervision from Regent University. She currently serves as an assistant professor of counseling and the clinical coordinator at Grace College. Before stepping into a teaching role, she worked with those experiencing homelessness in Wisconsin, providing counseling services in a long-term, residential substance use recovery program, and in an intensive outpatient program for a hospital, providing group counseling services. Cancellation Policy  
To receive a full refund, minus a $25 cancellation fee, registrants must cancel no later than November 1, 2025. Cancellations after November 1, 2025 or no shows will be reviewed after all expenses have been paid, a determination will be made regarding the ability to honor the request minus cost of guaranteed meals/special events. An administrative fee of $50.00 will be assessed for any refund requests after November 1, 2025. The VCA Convention is held annually with attendance from 500 – 600.   Availability: Exhibitor applications are accepted on first-come, first serve basis. Applications will be accepted based on space available.   Exhibitor Opportunities:  One (1) 6 ft. skirted table, draped and covered . . . . . . . . . .$600 Two (2) 6 ft. skirted table, draped and covered . . . . . . . . . .$800 Premium location with up to four tables . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $950 Agreement Terms and Conditions: Full payment must accompany this application. All exhibit space is subject to availability on a first-come, first-serve basis. Exhibitor requests for space assignments are given consideration but are made at the discretion of the Virginia Counselors Association (VCA). VCA reserves the right to not accept any exhibitor application without written explanation. Written confirmation will be e-mailed to exhibitors upon VCA’s receipt of a signed agreement and payment. Written notice must be sent in the event of a cancellation to the VCA office as noted below by November 1, 2025, after which no refunds will be granted. Any refunds are subject to a $50.00 service charge. All exhibits are subject to hotel policies for shipping, safety regulations, and electrical requests. Arrangements and payment for any technology or electrical needs are the responsibility of the exhibitor. The exhibitor assumes the entire responsibility and liability for losses, damages, and claims arising out of exhibitor’s activities on the hotel premises and will indemnify, defend and hold harmless the hotel, the VCA, their agents, servants and employees from any and all such losses, damages and claims. Exhibits may be set-up after 6:00 p.m. on November 12, 2025 and all exhibits shall be removed by 8:00 p.m. on November 14, 2025.   Exhibitor assumes the entire responsibility and liability for losses, damages, and claims, including without limitation, bodily injury and death, arising out of exhibitor’s activities on the Hotel’s premises (together “Liabilities”). Exhibitor covenants not to sue and agrees to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the Hotel, and its parent corporation, as well as their respective trustees, directors & officers, agents, servants, and employees from any and all such Liabilities. The Hampton Roads Convention Center is a third party beneficiary of this indemnification.
