Major national parks won in the recent Tanzania World Travel Awards 2025. It was the first time that the coveted Indian Ocean and Africa awards Gala Ceremony was held in East Africa.

Tanzania won big in this 32nd edition of the WTA held in Dar es Salaam. What stood out was that major Tanzanian parks won big and steadily. They retained their charm and magic to attract both international and local travellers who cast their votes, affirming their love for these destinations.

Who are the Winners of Tanzania World Travel Awards?

These six national parks took home the 32nd edition of the Tanzania World Travel Awards 2025.

1. Tarangire National Park

A herd of elephants grazing at the Tarangire National Park in Tanzania – Tanzania Odyssey

World Tourism Awards 2025 named Tarangire National Park Africa’s Leading Elephant Paradise National Park. This is the first major title for the ‘elephant paradise’ famed for its high elephant population in the country, with herds of 300 elephants trotting the park.

Tarangire is close to Arusha, home to the highest mountain in Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro. Elephants in this park play an important role in the ecosystem. They clear vegetation and also naturally dig watering holes near river beds during the dry season, which also benefits other wildlife in this park.

Moreover, ancient baobab trees dot the entire park, marking a very unique aspect of its ecosystem. They add to the Tarangire National Park’s natural beauty, which is characterised by dramatic landscapes and a diverse array of wild animals, including buffalo, zebras, wildebeest, and others. Silale Swamp within the park unveils its magic by providing wildlife with water throughout the year.

2. Kitulo National Park

Kitulo National Park in Tanzania.
Tanzania World Travel Awards 2025 named Kitulo National Park Africa’s Leading Honeymoon Destination. Kitulo is famously called the ‘Serengeti of Flowers’ found in Southern Tanzania. Its raw beauty makes it a preferred romantic getaway and honeymoon destination in Tanzania.

Lying on Poroto and Kipengere Mountain Ranges that cut across Njombe and Mbeya regions, Kitulo is a flower paradise between November and April. It has over 350 wildflower species, and at least 45 orchid types that make for nature photography. Rare bird species such as Denham’s bustard and blue swallow live here. The wild floral scenery, misty mountains and quiet landscapes live up to its fame as the ‘Garden of God (Bustani ya Mungu)

3. Ruaha National Park

Ruaha National Park in Tanzania.
Ruaha National Park is WTA’s choice for Africa’s Leading Cultural National Park. Ruaha represents Tanzania’s wild heritage with its high population of lions. Statistics reveal that 10% of African lions live at Ruaha National Park. Further, it has a huge pride of leopards and the highest number of African wild dogs on the continent.

Other predator sightings that you will spot include hyenas and jackals. Ruaha National Park has an additional population of 10,000 elephants easily spotted at the Great Ruaha River. Its unique ecosystem provides refuge to rare wildlife species such as the Lichtenstein’s hartebeest greater kudu, roan and sable antelopes.

4. Serengeti National Park

The Serengeti National Park.
For the seventh time in a row, Serengeti National Park retained its status as Africa’s Leading National Park as per the World Travel Awards. The Serengeti is home to the famous Wildebeest Migration/Great Migration. It’s estimated that 1.5 million wildebeest cross over to and from Kenya’s Masai Mara every year in a beautiful wildlife spectacle. WTA first named Tanzania as the best African national park in 2018, and it now completes the Tanzania World Travel Awards 2025.

5. Nyerere National Park

If you’re looking for natural scenery that will fascinate you, think about Nyerere National Park, Africa’s Leading National Park according to the 2025 World Travel Awards. The park is huge, covering 31,000 square kilometres and is largely remote. Its remoteness offers a perfect off-the-beaten-path safari experience.

The remote nature of Nyerere National Park provides a home to over 400,000 wildlife species, among them elephants, lions, rhinos, wild dogs, giraffes, crocodiles and hippos. The historic Rufiji River cuts through this park, offering amazing boat safaris and sunset rides.

The first week of November 2023 will live profoundly in the minds of the whole world, courtesy of the places King Charles III visited in Kenya. King Charles III visited Kenya for four days, accompanied by Queen Camilla, for a series of bilateral engagements with the Kenyan government. Kenyan President William Ruto, together with First Lady Rachel Ruto, welcomed the British monarchs to the country. Military honours welcomed the King at State House before he started his official business in Kenya.

President Ruto announced that the King’s visit was crucial to Kenya’s efforts to improve relations with the UK government moving forward. The historic ties between the two nations have facilitated advancements in trade and investments, fostering steady growth. Their collaboration spans key domains including defence and security, education, and climate change, ensuring a shared and promising future.

Places King Charles III Visited in Kenya

Amid all these talks, the British Majesties enjoyed visiting the following places in Kenya.

1. State House

British monarch King Charles III inspecting a Guard of Honour by the Kenyan military at State House in Nairobi.
King Charles III and Queen Camilla had a great time at the State House, Kenya in Nairobi. The King got full military honours during a military ceremony parade during the day. He would later have a tete-a-tete with Ruto on various issues, among them climate change, which the Kenyan President is so passionate about. The Royals later interacted with other high-profile guests during a State Banquet in the evening.

2. Uhuru Gardens

King Charles III visited Uhuru Gardens in Nairobi and laid a wreath on one of the tombs. The gardens in the Kenyan capital hold a significant historical essence as a national monument and museum. It commemorates Kenya’s independence from the British Empire on December 12, 1963. The name “Uhuru” is derived from Swahili, meaning “freedom.”

Thus, Uhuru Gardens played a pivotal role in Kenya’s journey to nationhood and represent the struggles and aspirations of the Kenyan people. The park was officially opened to the public on October 20, 1964, by Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who was a prominent leader in the fight for independence. This inauguration symbolised the official recognition and celebration of Kenya’s newfound freedom.

Designed by Kenyan architect Henry Muoria, Uhuru Gardens is considered one of the most important national monuments in Kenya. It encompasses a variety of monuments and memorials, each with its own historical significance. The Independence Monument, a 24-meter-tall obelisk, stands as a prominent symbol of the day Kenya achieved independence. The Freedom Torch, represented by a lit flame, embodies the enduring spirit of freedom and independence.

The Kenyatta Mausoleum serves as the final resting place of Kenya’s first president, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta, who was instrumental in leading the country to independence. It is also of monumental importance for Britain, given its relations to Kenya. That is why King Charles III visited it.

3. Kariokor Cemetery

Kariokor Cemetery is one of the places that the king also visited. This cemetery is the Commonwealth War Graves Commission cemetery at the heart of Nairobi, with over 2,000 service personnel graves, most of them being British who fought in World War I and World War II. Established in 1915, it is a burial ground for British and Allied soldiers who died during the East African Campaign of World War I.

After the war, the cemetery was expanded to include the graves of service personnel who died during World War II. Karikor Cemetery’s relevance to British history is what made the King’s visit and pay his respect to the fallen soldiers.

Photo/YouTube/Traveller

Immerse yourself in Tanzanian life by hopping on a dala dala, the widely used minibús. Experience authentic travel and save on transportation costs while connecting with the local rhythm of life. Tanzania’s charm extends beyond high-end safaris and luxury resorts.

What is the Cheapest Way to Travel in Tanzania?

Commuter buses are the cheapest way to travel in Tanzania. The public transport sector here is changing gradually and these buses have a touch of style, class, luxury and comfort. Their drivers, women included, are cheerful, friendly and courteous. They leave a mark of happiness for their clients. Additionally, motorcycles are a cheaper way to move to shorter distances in and out of the city compared to hiring cabs.

Is Kenya or Tanzania Cheaper?

While East Africa boasts a more advanced transportation infrastructure, Kenya stands out as the preferred choice for budget-conscious travelers. Not that it negates what to do in Tanzania on a budget but economies of scale are widely at play in Kenya than in Tanzania. With a greater number of flights, hotels, and safari camps, Kenya fosters robust competition, leading to reduced prices for travelers.

Still, Tanzania has lower rates of travel compared to Kenya in some aspects, and it depends on preferences. Overall, Kenya and Tanzania are amazing safari destinations with diversity.

Conclusion

Knowing what to do in Tanzania on a budget is the beginning of a memorable vacation. Simplicity is key, and you enjoy the width and breadth of Tanzania.

How crazy would you get when partying over Christmas if given the chance? Book a date with Detty December Nigeria and test your will for the finer things in life. With music and vibrant nightlife already ruling Lagos and other big cities all year, December is the month when party life goes a notch higher. You may have also experienced how bad traffic gridlock is in Naija, but it gets nastier at this time of the year.

Traffic is insanely terrifying in Detty December but worry not because it adds to the beauty of this annual carnival. Besides long stretches of vehicles stuck in traffic across major Nigerian cities, music, partying, and authentic Nigerian cuisine crown it all. Travellers always look forward to living the Nigerian dream to the fullest in December.

What Is Detty December Nigeria?

Detty December Nigeria is a colloquial expression that encapsulates the festive ambience of December. It comes to life between Christmas and New Year’s Day. This season is a jubilant and lively time, marked by celebrations, merrymaking, and quality moments with loved ones. The term “detty” is an informal way of saying “dirty” or “crazy,” perfectly mirroring the spirited and vibrant nature of this period.

Where Did Detty December Come From?

The precise origins of Detty December Nigeria remain somewhat shrouded in mystery, but it is widely believed to have emerged in the early 2000s. Possibly within the vibrant city of Lagos, Nigeria. As time passed, Detty December transformed into a more comprehensive celebration of the festive season, encompassing not just extravagant parties but also family gatherings, travel, and acts of benevolence.

In the mid-2010s, it gained substantial traction, thanks in part to the emergence of social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, where Nigerians eagerly shared images and videos capturing their Detty December experiences.

Is there any other exciting month and way to explore the ins and outs of Accra than with Detty December Ghana? Nothing beats the fascination of this annual festival that lights up Ghana to unimaginable levels.

Think of jovial throngs dancing to the catchy sounds of Azonto, highlife, and Afrobeats. Not indoors but in the festive streets of Accra decked out with fairy lights. That’s Detty December for you. Every night is a celebration, with street vendors grilling up delicious Ghanaian fare and pop-up bars serving up tropical concoctions.

If you always wanted to visit, feel, and enjoy Ghana, December is the perfect moment for you to do so.

What is Detty December Ghana?

Detty December Ghana is part of a longstanding West African culture where families and friends reunite and celebrate wildly. Ghanaians in the diaspora are the proponents of this festival, just like their counterparts from Nigeria.

Dettty December Ghana. Photo/9Bills Blog

Detty December Origin

Historically, ‘detty’ (dirty) is a festival founded by diaspora-based West Africans returning home in December to celebrate Christmas with their friends and families. The celebration is hard to miss because it fills the streets. Food and music are in plenty for the nearly week-long event that starts over Christmas and into the New Year.

Favourite West African foods, such as the famous jollof rice and fufu, dot every corner of the country. Music and dance take over the streets. Senior citizens are not left behind either as they catch up with friends and family in a typical West African style. It is always a time for generosity, with communities coming together to support those in need and celebrate the spirit of giving.

Is Detty December in Ghana Great?

Detty December Ghana is famous for the right reasons. Part of Ghanaian culture revolves around entertainment; they are as fun-loving as Nigerians are. Ghana has earned the moniker “Africa’s Ibiza” due to its vibrant nightlife. However, what good is culture if it doesn’t make you want to beg for a break?

Ghana is the place to go by all descriptions if you want to party without limits and eat traditional food to your fill for days. Not to forget Ghanaians are extremely welcoming and their culture only draws you closer.

Is December a good time to go to Ghana?

December in Ghana is a resounding “Yes!” for visitors. The air is charged with anticipation, and vibrant rhythms pulse through the lively streets. With a contagious joie de vivre in every passerby’s eyes, the atmosphere is festive. The timing couldn’t be better, as detty December Ghana marks the tail end of Ghana’s dry season.

Detty December Ghana.
Expect a rich offering of balmy days basked in golden sunshine and cool, refreshing nights. And when the famous detty fests come after Christmas, the weather is so good that you shed heavy coats for breezy outfits. They are ideal for exploring picturesque beaches like Kokrobite or Busua. There, the rhythmic crash of waves harmonises with the laughter of beachgoers, creating a perfect setting for sun-drenched adventures.

Moreover, fashion is hugely important during the carnival. It’s a time to dress to impress, to let your personality shine, and to join the vibrant spectacle of the streets. Ghanaians embrace their unique style and use fashion to express themselves. Bold colours, intricate patterns, and statement accessories send powerful statements about their culture. From dazzling kente cloths to playful Ankara prints, the streets become a runway of creativity.

Detty December Ghana Fashion

Traditional Ghanaian garments like kente, worn by royalty and on special occasions, take centre stage. Men don flowing kaftans and tailored suits, while women drape themselves in elaborate kente wraps and headpieces. It’s a chance to connect with cultural heritage and exude elegance.

Also, the carnival is synonymous with glitter, sequins, and shimmering fabrics. The nights come alive with party dresses that catch the light as people dance and socialise under the stars. It’s a time to let loose and embrace the festive spirit.

You may have heard about the Ethiopian calendar, which is seven years behind, but did you know about the 13 Zulu calendar months? Did you know that September is a New Year for the Zulu’s and not January 1 as in the Gregorian calendar?

Many people wonder how one tribe, a majority in South Africa, confine itself to a 13-month calendar, each with 28 days. The Zulu people are a special breed and a beacon of pride for Africa. They have held and preserved their culture against all odds and the pressure of a fast-evolving world. Despite it all, a traditional system guides this community.

What are Zulu Calendar Months Like?

Zulu calendar months number 13 according to the lunar calendar, which this community follows. It is a big departure from the conventional Gregorian calendar the world follows with a 12-month calendar cycle. The Zulu calendar carries a lot of unique aspects in the following ways.

Naming and Symbolism

Each month has a unique Zulu name and is symbolic of the kind of agricultural season it is. For example, August (uNcwaba) signifies new grass after the burning of vegetation. September (uMandulo) denotes the start of the farming season. Here is each month and its traditional name, and what it symbolises.

The Zulu people. Photo/Songs

January – uMasingana (marks the search of a season for ripening crops)

February – uNhlolanja (a month for dogs to mate)

March – uNdasa (a season of food abundance)

April – uMbasa (a month of satisfaction for cattle after heavy feeding)

May – uNhlaba (Aloe plants bloom)

June – uNhlangulana (wind blows off wind from leaves and the ground)

July – uNtulikazi/uMaquba (dust blowing by wind season)

August – uNcwaba (grass growing season)

September – uMandulo (the start of the farming season)

October – uMfumfu (crop growth season)

November – uLwezi (a season of insects feeding on crops)

December – uZibandlela (grass growing by the roadside)

Month Pattern Consistency

This calendar has a consistent pattern that always aligns with the lunar cycle. However, each month only has 28 days.

The 13th Month

iNdida is the name given to what is today’s puzzle of Zulu calendar months. It symbolises confusion or a puzzle, and it completes a calendar cycle with only four to five days and the year is done. Weird? Definitely, but it is the missing puzzle that helps you understand the calendar rationale of the Zulu people.

A Zulu dance. Photo/Our Ancestories

iNdida acts as an intercalary month to keep the lunar calendar aligned with the solar year. Since lunar months are slightly shorter than solar months, over time, the lunar calendar drifts out of sync with the seasons. This 13th month in the community’s calendar acts as a catalyst. It corrects the ‘gaps’ between solar and lunar cycles every three years when the discrepancy becomes noticeable.

Studies into the Zulu calendar months indicate that traditionally, the decision to add iNdida was made through consensus among community elders. Each decision made was based on observations of natural markers and agricultural cycles.

What is September in isizulu?

September in isiZulu marks the start of a farming season, right after preparing the land by burning vegetation in late June to early July. Farmers troop to their pieces of land to plant because it is the start of a New Year, going by the lunar cycle. Planting is symbolic of new beginnings, usually signified by planting.

The Gregorian calendar puts September as the ninth month, but the first month of the year for the isiZulu-speaking community. Many tribesmen welcome it with renewed hope marked by certain community rituals to guarantee a bountiful harvest months later. The arrival of uMandulo is traditionally welcomed with the “Ukuthela Ntuthu” ceremony. This ritual involves community members gathering to cleanse and bless the land for a fruitful harvest.

Zulu People. Photo/Rhino Africa Blog

Song, dance and food characterize this ceremony which elders say unites and strengthens social bonds within the community. It creates a platform for elders to share their wisdom with the younger generation and also pay tribute to their ancestors. Essentially, September means this for the Zulu people:

New beginnings

A chance to foster unity among community members

A month to teach the norms of the community

A month to reconnect and appease ancestors

A moment to continue and safeguard communal traditions

Safeguarding the relevance of agriculture to the community.

Why is January Called Umasingana in Zulu?

January is called Umasingana to denote a month of scouting for ripening crops, mostly pumpkin,s which are a staple in this community.

Date Ideas in Nairobi

1. Enjoy A Cup of Java Coffee

Well, it’s no secret that some of the best coffee beans in the world are made in Kenya. However, not every Kenyan has tasted the coffee served at high-end coffee shops such as Java House. Take your better half to try the most delightful coffees at Java if you are searching for unique date ideas in Nairobi.

2. Go Horse Riding at Achi’s Ranch

Horse riding. Photo/ Scrapbook Journeys.

One of the best ways to enjoy an adventure through the forest is to do it on a horse. Well, you can enjoy this fun activity with your partner at Achi’s Ranch located in Karen. Here, they offer horse riding excursions through Ngong Forest with the guidance of well-trained professionals.

3. Do Karaoke

How about doing karaoke with your partner in the evening? Music adds to memorable date ideas in Nairobi. A karaoke machine broadcasts that bathroom singing voice to the living room, and you can enjoy a good laugh at each other’s expense when they mispronounce the lyrics or stutter at the high notes.

Wondering where you can do karaoke in Kenya’s capital? Worry no more because we’ve got you covered. Visit the Club Hypnotica Charity Karaoke on Sundays at Woodvale Grove, Westlands. You can also enjoy a video karaoke night every Tuesday from 7 pm at Cubano Sports Bar located on Stedmark Road, off Magadi Road.

Doing karaoke with your partner is worth trying if you are in a relationship.
4. Visit The Butterfly Centre

One of the unique date ideas in Nairobi is visiting the Butterfly Centre. Imagine sitting in a setting surrounded by hundreds of butterflies in all their glory. As they flutter around, you and your partner can enjoy the beautiful shapes and colours. The Nairobi Butterfly Centre is located in the Karen area, about 10 km southwest of the city.

5. Go Ice Skating

For most Kenyans, skating is an acquired taste. This activity needs an adventurous person, and if your partner is one, then it is one of the date ideas in Nairobi that you should try. The prestigious Panari Hotel along Mombasa road is the only hotel in the city with an indoor ice skating rink.

Ice skating in Nairobi. Photo/ Capital News.

Once you have had enough of the scorching African sun, visit Panari, which is the only Solar Ice Rink of its kind in East and Central Africa. The rink, which is 32 by 12 m in size and has a 15,000 sq. ft, can accommodate 200 skaters at any time and is open seven days a week from 11.00 am until 10.00 pm.

6. Visit Nairobi National Park

Kenya’s capital Nairobi has a national park. Photo/ andBeyond.

Nairobi, Kenya’s capital, is the only city in the world that has a national park inside it. Well, it would be unfortunate to talk about date ideas in Nairobi and not mention a visit to Nairobi National Park. Together with your partner, you can take a guided safari tour, go hiking or biking on one of the park’s many trails, or enjoy a picnic in the beautiful surroundings.

7. Watch The Sunset at KICC

Finally, you and your partner can call it a day at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre (KICC) rooftop. For the longest time, the KICC was the tallest building in the country, where people would enjoy panoramic views of the city.

Even though it’s no longer the tallest, the KICC is still a great location to watch the city and enjoy a stunning sunset. Here, you’ll have an obstructed view of Nairobi from every possible angle. After the sun sets, you can stargaze for a little longer before leaving.

The capital is the heart of the country, which is bustling with life. It has the biggest airport in the country as well as the most important port. This is where everything happens. It may seem like an unlikely place to travel to and enjoy because it is mostly a business hub, but there are some memorable experiences and adventures in Douala.

What are the Top Things to do in Cameroon?

See Africa Today brings you the top things to do in Cameroon.

Photo/Tranquil Kilimanjaro

From Douala, you can go hiking up West Africa’s highest peak, which is also an active volcano, Mount Cameroon. This adventure can take over four days with a professional tour guide. The Summit of Mt Cameroon is about 4095m, and there is a lot to see on your way up. This trail is also used for the Guinness Mt Cameroon International Race.

3. Musee Maritime de Douala

If you want to go around the city and get to know it better, including its history, culture, and Cameroon’s heritage, you should visit the Maritime Museum of Douala. It is a beautifully designed building that houses three floors with a beautiful view of the port.

You will learn about the Cameroonian tropical coast’s maritime landscape and history when you visit the museum. Some exhibits portray the evolution of the port city, with paintings, sculptures, maps used by the ships that sailed to the port, and models of the vessels used for trade. It is easily accessible from several hotels; one can even take a walk.

4. Doual’Art

Doual’Art in Cameroon.
