51.

Stevie Wonder Ghanaian citizenship is no longer a dream but a reality. It was presented as a gift during his 74th birthday by President Nana Akufo Addo. The celebrated American singer and songwriter flew to Ghana to celebrate his birthday and the gift by the Ghanaian president was a total surprise.

  52.
He holds Africa to his heart and he has on numerous occasions spoken about his deep connection with the continent. Just like many other African Americans whose heritage traces back to Africa. West Africa in particular has a lot of Black history as most slaves were shipped to the US from here.

  53.
Is Stevie Wonder Ghanaian Citizenship Real?

  54.
It is easy to cast doubt on the new developments but Stevie Wonder Ghanaian Citizenship is real. The Ghanaian premier gifted him in Accra where he was together with his family. Accra is Ghana’s capital and it has a special appeal to Americans.

  55.
President Akufo Addo in his speech said that Wonder’s musical work and his selflessness in protecting his heritage earned him a second citizenship. He added that such sustained selflessness deserves a life-changing prize and what he had was welcoming him as another son of the soil.

  56.

Stevie Wonder. 57.
The Ghanaian premier underscored that the citizenship honours him as an artist with a soft spot for Africa.

  58.
“By conferring Ghanaian citizenship to him, we not only recognise his immense talent and achievements, but also acknowledge his deep connection to the African continent,” BBC Africa reports.

  59.
Going back to the American singer, he says that he always talked and thought about Ghana.

  60.
“For years, I’ve talked about being in Ghana, I started talking about it in 1973,” he once confessed.

  61.
He disclosed in 2021 that his visits to Ghana in the past made him realize that there are great countries outside the US without racism. His moving to Ghana was never a secret and it was occasioned by what he explained as racial injustice in America. Such didn’t exist in Ghana and he fell in love with the West African country.

  62.
What Country is Stevie Wonder From?

  63.
The 25-time Grammy Award winner is American born and bred but he has an unexplained relationship with Sub-Saharan Africa. He was born on May 13, 1950 in Michigan. However, his birth was premature – six weeks – before. Doctors put him in the incubator but there was too much oxygen in it which caused a lifelong condition called retinopathy that got him blind.

  64.
Retinopathy stops the growth of the eyes and retinas detach. Growing up as a differently abled Black child came with its challenges but it did not stop him from doing the things he loved. Music was one of them. He joined a local choir at a Baptist church in Detroit where his family relocate to after leaving Saginaw in Michigan.

  65.
The ‘Part-Time Lover’ singer became a soloist in church at eight years old and later learned how to play music instruments. He perfectly played the harmonica, piano and drums which inspired him to join hands with a like-minded, friend for a duo group. They performed periodically at dances and gatherings and on street corners.

  66.
According to a biography by his father Lula Mae Hardaway, Wonder signed with the legendary Motown in 1961 when he was only 11. He dropped his first classic album ‘The Jazz Soul of Little Stevie’ in 1962 when he enrolled at Michigan School for The Blind. Having spent time with Motown’s resident producer, Wonder released another album ‘Tribute to Uncle Ray’ mainly cover songs by Ray Charles.

  67.
Musical Success

  68.
Stevie was more than just a singer by the 1970s. He honed his singing and songwriting skills and zealously learnt how to produce music. His discography such as “Talking Book” (1972) and “Innervisions” (1973) ventured into genres outside soul music. His songs such as “Superstition” and “Higher Ground” became timeless masterpieces.

  69.

Stevie Wonder. Photo/BBC

  70.
Wonder’s songs addressed societal themes in addition to being catchy. He addressed urban difficulties in “Living for the City” (1973). Further, he embraced the concept of a good life in “Isn’t She Lovely” (1976). Love songs like “You Are the Sunshine of My Life” and “I Just Called to Say I Love You” (1984) radiated warmth and affection.

  71.
His music portfolio earned him 25 Grammy Awards besides inspiring and influencing a dozen artists with his songs and determination and outlook in life.

  72.
Am I a Ghanaian Citizen?

  73.
You are a Ghanaian citizen by birth, naturalization and if your parents are Ghanaian. Stevie Wonder Ghanaian citizenship is more of a naturalization process. It refers to the legal procedure or process through which a non-citizen obtains citizenship of a certain country.

  74.
Essentially, it is a means of granting legal citizenship, along with all the rights and obligations that go along with it, to someone who born in a different country.

  75.
Conclusion

  76.
Stevie Wonder joins a growing list of Americans relocating to this West African country to escape racism and injustices subjected to people of colour. A journey he started in the 1970s has finally come to fruition.

  101.

South African sensation Tyla Met Gala sand dress is not one of those fashion statements that you would forget. She elevated African fashion to another level. The ‘Water’ hitmaker added another page in celebrity history this time around and it had nothing to do with music.

  102.
Tyla exchanged sand for water during the 2024 Met Gala. Balmain helped her bring her fanciful outfit to reality for her first Met. The Balmain team created Tyla a dress made of sand as a reference to the sands of time, using the word “time” as the key phrase from the evening’s Garden of Time dress code.

  103.
Her stunning look took the world by surprise and she lived the moment with zeal and a deep appreciation for a fantastic fashion hack.

  104.
Who Wore a Sand Dress to the Met Gala?

  105.
Tyla Met Gala sand dress is an incomprehensible fashion stir and a big statement to the global world of fashion design. The 2024 Met Gala took place on May 7 and the world laid its eyes on 250 never-see-before designs. ‘Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion’ it was dubbed and showcased at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. While there were a dozen other celebrities; Tyla was the eye candy being an African in an exuberant dress.

  107.
Tyla Met Gala Sand Dress

  108.
French luxury fashion house, Balmain fanned more fame for the South African music goddess. Balmain designed the stunning dress welcoming the 22-year-old Grammy Award-winning artist to her inaugural Met Gala. The Balmain team created Tyla a dress made of sand as a reference to the sands of time. “Time” was the key phrase from the evening’s Garden of Time dress code.

  109.
Founded by Pierre Balmain in 1945, the French brand is renowned for its distinctive style, which combines traditional elegance with a contemporary edge. Think of well-crafted needlework, well-defined lines, and classic outfits designed around confidence. In addition, Balmain has a rich history in Haute Couture. This design niche emphasizes on exquisite craftsmanship and sumptuous design specifically for the affluent.

  110.
Beyond this, Balmain influences modern fashion trends with a focus on empowerment and vibrant colour schemes.

  111.
How Was Tyla’s Sand Dress Made?

  112.
Olivier Rousteing, Balmain’s creative director had a deep inspiration for Tyla Met Gala sand dress. He wanted to create a stunning momentary design as a way to redefine boundaries.

  113.
“The inspiration behind this creation stemmed from a desire to redefine boundaries and transform a transient material into an everlasting masterpiece. The idea of sculpting a garment from something as ephemeral as sand ignited my imagination, and I could not be happier with the end result,” he told Vogue.

  114.
Rousteing designed the sand dress as long, hugging and strapless and mimicked a mermaid shape at the bottom. This garment glistened with every step Tyla took and each of its three shades of sand combined with tiny crystal studs shone conspicuously. She also carried the Balmain hourglass clutch, which was another nod to the evening’s theme.

  115.
While also speaking to Vogue about the dress, Tyla said that she set her mind on having a unique outfit for the Met Gala. Balmain shared with her a sketch of the dress and she loved it, but not without nervousness. Still, she looked forward to wearing it on the night of the event and it was fantastic.

  116.

South African sensation Tyla at the 2024 Met Gala. Photo/Vanity Fair/Today Show

  117.
The “On My Body’ singer is establishing herself as a major player in the African and global fashion industry. Just before stepping into New York for the Gala night; she made fashion waves at the 2024 Grammy Awards. She donned a pistachio-colored Atelier Versace gown sewn to Swarovski crystal fishnet. Rousteing has since named her the biggest upcoming African fashion icon.

  118.
What is a Sand Dress?

  119.
A sand dress is a custom creation designed entirely from sand and created by French luxury fashion design house Balmain. It was featured at the 2024 Met Gala among the 250 rare custom designs in the fashion industry. Subsequently, Rousteing – Balmain’s lead designer – picked Tyla to represent the brand that’s yet to be commercially available.

  120.
Rousteing assertively said that Tyla was the perfect brand ambassador because she is overzealous in her creative art. Being that this is a shared trait – he pushes his fashion boundaries far and wide – Tyla was a match.

  121.
Conclusion

  122.
Africa never falls short of epic fashion trends and Tyla just took it a notch higher. Consequently, African designers are taking notes, thus expect more mind-blowing designs in future.

  152.
Was Prince Harry and Meghan Invited to Nigeria?

  153.
Prince Harry and Meghan visit to Nigeria follows an invitation by General Christopher Gwabin Musa, the Nigerian Chief of Defense Staff. General Musa holds the highest military rank in Nigeria. The Duke of Sussex has an impressive military career record having served in the British Army for 10 years. Prince Harry served between 2005 and 2015. He was deployed in Afghanistan twice during the time he served in the military.

  154.
As an army veteran, Harry visited injured army officers in one of the military hospitals in Nigeria’s administrative capital.

  155.
Where Did Meghan and Prince Harry Visit in Nigeria?

  156.
Prince Harry and Meghan visit to Nigeria took them to different places, among them Lightway Academy and a military hospital. General Musa thereafter treated them to a grand reception. Harry and Meghan later visited the Armed Forces’ Officers Mess for a seated volleyball match. They sat excitedly with green and white scarves draped down their shoulders.

  157.
Harry was then challenged to play with the squad. Two teams quickly came up; Team CDS and Team Harry. Prince Harry played a few rounds while seated as most players had sustained injuries in the war against Boko Haram. The Islamist insurgents remain Nigeria’s biggest threat to peace and a dozen soldiers have been maimed in the fight.

  158.
Among them is Peacemaker Azuegbulam who lost a limb during a faceoff with Boko Haram. According to BBC, Azuegbulam transitioned to paralympic sports and even won a gold medal at the Invictus Games in Germany last year. He made a record by being the first African Paralympian to win a gold medal.

  159.
Nigeria was the first African country to compete in the Invictus Games. It is a sports event for injured veterans and members of the armed forces that Prince Harry co-founded in 2014. Harry talked about the excitement the Nigerian team brought to the games in Düsseldorf, Germany. Through a nonprofit organization, Nigeria Unconquered, it assists wounded, ill, and disabled service members in “finding new purpose” via sports.

  160.
Nigeria Unconquered will assemble Nigeria’s squad for the Invictus Games in Canada 2025. Prince Harry and Meghan visit to Nigeria also involved a leadership summit for women. Meghan was hosted by the World Trade Organization Director General Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala. On Sunday, the couple held a basketball clinic under Nigeria Unconquered.

  161.

The Duke of Sussex Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Markle in Nigeria. Photo/AP/Sunday Alamba

  162.
Is Meghan Markle Nigerian?

  163.
In one of her 2022 episodes of her Archetypes podcast, Meghan revealed that a genealogy test showed that she is 43% Nigerian. Her heritage is greatly fascinating. She is an American-born actress, from California and is also fully schooled in the US. However, she has lived her entire life in Los Angeles, where she made her acting debut at Northwestern University. But her genealogy tests indicated that she is also a West African native.

  164.
Even with Prince Harry and Meghan visit to Nigeria; the Duchess of Sussex remains grateful for her African heritage now that she is a member of the British Royal Family. Meghan was not born into the Royal Family. But she is married to Prince Harry, who has a strong lineage of royalty. Naturally, Harry is British, whereas Meghan is American.

  165.
Her mixed-race nature of their marriage has always created some doubt over her place in the Royal Family.

  166.
Conclusion

  167.
Following their departure from their positions as senior working royals in 2020, Prince Harry and Meghan are on their first in Nigeria. They are fond of this country much more because of Meghan’s ancestry in West Africa. Moreover, their visit means a lot to war veterans in Nigeria.

  192.
From Lesotho, also known as ‘The Kingdom of Sky‘, to the popular tourist destination Morocco, we explore the African nations famous for their teeth-clattering, frost-bitten beauty. Without further ado, let’s take a look at the 5 coldest countries in Africa.

  193.
1. Lesotho

  194.

Lesotho is the coldest country in Africa. Temperatures here can range from an astonishing 0°F to a relatively mild 82°F, which creates a climate spectrum as diverse as its landscapes. Lesotho covers an area of 30,355 square kilometres and it is the only state in the world that sits above 1,000 metres. Its climate is cooler than in many other parts of the world are at the same latitude.

  196.
In Lesotho, it gets so cold that dams, streams, rivers and waterfalls get completely frozen. As a result, it’s not surprising to see the nation at the summit of 5 coldest countries in Africa. The last glacial period in Lesotho led to the formation of blockfields, blockstreams and solifluction deposits in the higher parts of the country.

  197.
2. Morocco

The coldest month is usually January and this is the time when the popular Atlas Mountains is usually full of snow.

  204.
4. Tanzania

  205.
Well, it might come as a surprise to many that Tanzania is among the 5 coldest countries in Africa considering it is positioned near the equator. According to sources, the East African nation maintains a relatively moderate climate with temperatures ranging from 59°F to 68°F.

  247.

Unconditional government support, competent management, modern fleet and capitalizing on Africa’s expanding aviation industry sums up why Ethiopian Airlines is successful. The airline owns 45% of Zambia Airways, 49% of Guinea Airways, 100% of Ethiopia-Mozambique Airlines, 49% of Chad Airlines and 49% of Air Malawi.

If you have used it, you can bet your bottom dollar that it is a leader in African aviation. See Africa Today delves into the factors that make it the best and most successful airline in Africa.

  261.
Ethiopian Airlines’ success is largely attributed to the strategic assistance and ownership of the Ethiopian government. The government keeps operating expenses low by operating a modern fleet which is fuel-efficient and gives passengers the utmost comfort. It also reinvests profits back into the airline. Additionally, the government’s investment in Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, a significant African aviation hub, supports effective connectivity throughout the continent.

  262.
Subsequently, the government gives the airline some autonomy while still holding ownership. The airline’s management independently decides on expansion, partnerships, and strategic routes without interference from the state.

  263.
Modern Fleet

  264.

Ethiopian Airlines. Photo/News Central TV

  265.
The Airbus, Boeing and Bombardier fleets keep the airline’s operating costs low. The 154 aircraft have an average age of seven years and are super fuel-efficient. Ethiopia is the first African airline to operate such a huge modern fleet successfully. Each fleet is tailored for a specific route and purpose. Long-haul routes for passengers and cargo enlist the Airbus. Boeing planes are equally great for long-range flights while Bombardier are best suited for regional flights.

  266.
Tapping on a Growing African Aviation Market

  267.
Ethiopian Airlines has a 100% stake in Ethiopia-Mozambique Airlines, 49% of Chad Airlines, 49% of Air Malawi, 45% of Zambia Airways, and 49% of Guinea Airways. It benefits strategically from holding minority holdings in these African airlines. Firstly, it frees up resources to expand the network into other markets, increasing its reach without having to start up new airlines on its own.

  268.
By doing this, they expand their network and draw travellers who might not have otherwise been able to reach their primary hub in Addis Ababa. In addition, more travellers from smaller African countries fly to its main hub in Addis Ababa.

  269.
Finally, minority stakes enable African carriers to collaborate and exchange knowledge, which benefits all parties. Ethiopian Airlines has a reputation for efficiency and management skills which it shares with affiliated airlines.

  270.
Competent Management

  271.
Competent management is a big reason why Ethiopian Airlines is successful. The management has made Addis Ababa a strategic route network hub facilitating effective connectivity throughout Africa. To cut costs, they place a high priority on having a modern, fuel-efficient fleet that still guarantees passenger comfort.

  272.

There are a lot of fascinating things about Ethiopia but one that’s not often spoken about is Ethiopian Airlines’ beautiful ladies’ crew. Photo/Ethiopian Airlines

  273.
Moreover, the Ethiopian national carrier has forged prudent alliances thereby attracting more travellers. Most important and often overlooked by other African airlines, Ethiopian Airlines invests massively in employee training. This promotes an excellence-focused culture and helps the airline maintain its position as the best airline in Africa.

  274.
What is Special About Ethiopian Airlines?

  275.
Being a successful state-owned African airline makes Ethiopian Airlines successful. A majority of African carriers where the respective governments own a majority stake operate in losses. However, it is different for Ethiopia which runs the most profitable airline in Africa. Moreover, it’s assertively a Pan-African aviation powerhouse.

  276.
In terms of passengers transported, destinations served, fleet size, and revenue; Ethiopian airlines takes it home. What’s more is that it operates a relatively young fleet of the best aircraft in the aviation space providing safety, comfort and efficiency. Not to forget that its stake in other African markets helps it expand its aviation portfolio regionally and internationally.

  277.
Conclusion

  278.
Ethiopian Airlines is an excellent case study of how to run a profitable airline in Africa. It has registered remarkable growth in the last 10 years – 25% annually. Unbelievably, the airline has realised its 15-year strategic plan before schedule and won numerous aviation awards regionally and internationally. Technology, independence, customer service and strategic thinking put it on a level above all other African airlines.

  305.

Global Citizen NOW summit recently held in New York wasn’t just about ending global poverty. It was a special moment for Africa to be heard on a global level and inspire the world in so many ways. The Big Apple hosted brilliant minds for days and the spotlight was on eight Africans who attended the summit.

  306.
What is the Global Citizenship NOW?

  307.
Global Citizenship NOW is a goal-oriented event pushing for impactful change in the world. It establishes a global agenda for immediate action and brings together the most brilliant minds, powerful decision-makers, and celebrity personalities. Their goal is to address the world’s most pressing issues of poverty and find solutions for each.

  308.
The two-day event whose first edition debuted in Melbourne, Australia in March marked a new era in global advocacy. New York – a major City in the world – hosted the second leg of the event. Top of the agenda was the fight against severe poverty which is why it brings together a mix of leaders from the public and private sectors, artists, and advocates.

  309.
Was Africa Represented at Global Citizen NOW in New York?

  310.
Eight African leaders and advocates stole the show at Sprigs Studios in New York City where the summit went down on May 1 and May 2nd. Here they are.

  311.
1. President Paul Kagame

  312.

Rwandan President Paul Kagame. Photo/Paul Kagame

  313.
Rwandan President Paul Kagame tops the highlight of Global Citizen Now with his articulate address. He appeared virtually and propelled African unity and accountability. Kagame cited the two as the most important proponents of growth in Africa. Hosted by Areya Media CEO Isha Sesay, Kagame explained that he takes lessons from the 1994 Rwandan Genocide pitting the Tutsi against the Hutsi.

  314.
The absence of unity among the people from both tribes and a lack of accountability by leaders and other players from both tribes led to genocide. And as Rwanda commemorates this sad event in history under the Kwibuka 30 Initiative (‘Kwibuka’ is Rwandese for remembrance) Kagame feels Africa needs to get it right on accountability and unity.

  315.
In retrospect, political, social and economic divisions have only hindered Africa’s growth. Looking at Rwanda analytically, it has a promising future drawing lessons from its past mishaps.

  316.
2. Berla Mundi

  317.

Ghanaian Media personality Berla Mundi. 356.

Kenya South Africa road trip is increasingly popular across Africa. More and more adventurers are taking up the challenge which is now more popular than it was years ago.

  357.
What has changed? Improved road network, security enhancement or more travel-by-road-adventure campaigns? All of the above have an impact on this growing phenomenon.

  358.
Why is Kenya South Africa Road Trip Popular?

  359.
Just recently, a Kenyan biker Waqho Hassan Boru, popularly known as Mustapha Konvict stunned East Africa with his epic trip. Mustapha is a speed bike enthusiast and he has always wished to ride from South Africa to Kenya. He planned the trip for a while and April 2024 became a special month for him as he rode his dream through.

  360.
He covered 6000km in his BMW R1200GS adventure bike and he loved the whole experience. The Kenyan biker now has a tall tale to tell about Kenya South Africa road trip. But why is it so popular? Here are five reasons why it is very famous.

  361.

Kenyan biker Mustapha Konvict recently covered a 6,000 km trip from South Africa to Kenya. Photo/Mustapha Konvict/Facebook

  362.
Varied Landscapes

  363.
Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Botswana and finally South Africa provide dramatic and varied landscapes. You travel through the savannas of Kenya and Tanzania, taking in the striking scenery of the Great Rift Valley, and ending in the modern towns and picturesque coasts of South Africa.

  364.
Diverse Experiences

  365.
The stretch between Kenya and South Africa has a lot of memories to make. Each country you pass through has something special to offer. The savannahs in Kenya and Tanzania are incredibly beautiful. Zambia is spectacular while Botswana is invariably breathtaking.

  366.
Good Infrastructure

  367.
A good transport network largely supports the adventure to and from South Africa. Of the 6000km stretch, most of it is in a very good state.

  368.
Border Crossings Opening Up

  369.
Border crossing can be a thorn in the flesh – it was years ago. However, things are slowly changing and border officials are now more receptive to travellers across the region.

  370.
Road Trips Campaign Success

  371.
At least a dozen people have successfully completed the Kenya South Africa road trip in the past and documented every step of the journey. Moreover, public transport has amazing travel packages from Kenya to South Africa. There is also an increasing portfolio of private tour entities plying the route and more and more people doing group or solo trips.

  372.
How Much Does a Road Trip to South Africa Cost?

  373.
The cost of the trip to and from South Africa varies as there are many factors that dictate the cost. For example, a bike will consume less fuel than a car. Secondly, the route you choose also determines the ultimate cost of the trip. These are the most popular routes.

  374.

  375.
Eastern Route – It is the most popular and measuring 4,942km (3,071 miles) passing through Tanzania-Zambia-Botswana-Zimbabwe. Incidentally, it is also the most expensive route due to high visa costs in some border points.

  376.
Western Route – This route passes through Namibia, Zambia, Botswana, Rwanda, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and Uganda. It is shorter compared to the Easter route with about 4,700km 2,920 miles) to cover. Additionally, it is more adventurous but only a few people opt for it.

  377.

  378.
For Mustapha Konvict who recently covered the 6000km Kenya South Africa road trip, his budget was $1,750 (Ksh230,000). Much of this money goes to accommodation, food and fuel. In 2019, just before the Covid-19 pandemic broke out, another wanderlust, Farhana Oberson travelled to South Africa by road.

  379.

Wanderlust Farhana Oberson. She travelled to South Africa by road in 2019. Photo/Farhana Oberson/Instagram

  380.
Oberson covered 5,700km on a total budget of $8,100 (Ksh810,000) together with six other friends on board her Toyota Landcruiser. She followed the Western route but chose Mozambique as her entry point to South Africa seven days later. Her budget was incredibly high because they travelled as a group and her car of choice is a fuel guzzler. Besides, she made stops at different parks and some of the charges were exorbitant.

  381.
If you choose to use public transport, the trip from Nairobi to South Africa will cost at least $200. Bus travel is more affordable but more rigid compared to a solo ride or solo drive.

  382.
Are There Challenges to a Road Trip to South Africa?

  383.
Weather changes, rogue clearing agents at the borders and currency exchange are some of the challenges you could encounter on the Kenya South Africa Road trip. According to Mustapha, extreme weather patterns – heavy rainfall or too much heat – present a challenge during the trip.

  384.
Conclusion

  385.
Kenya South Africa road trip is more than possible. You can choose to use buses or self-drive all the way. Whatever your preference is, be sure to enjoy the trip.

  411.

When he graduated in 1966 as a civil engineer from Kings College in London, Richard Evans never knew his legacy would be Hemingways hotels in Kenya. Popularly known as Dicky, the 73-year-old billionaire is the brains behind the prestigious Hemingways Nairobi, Hemingways Watamu and Ole Seki Mara. Ole Seki is a luxury safari camp in Maasai Mara.

  412.
Hemingways – Nairobi and Watamu – are five-star hotels and these are just some of the hospitality investments under Dicky. His hotels in Kenya are worth over $44.5 million (Ksh 6 billion). He is also the man behind the multi-million-dollar Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia, US.

  413.
Who is Richard Evans?

  414.
Evans is a billionaire investor in the global hospitality industry, a sizeable share being in the US in Kenya. Dicky maintains a lean to no media presence but Hemingways Nairobi clearly speaks to who he is. This five-star hotel is set up in Karen, an uptown Nairobi suburb where wealthy businessmen and politicians reside.

  415.
Richard Evans hails from Cornwall in England. He is a sports lover, his favourite sports being rugby, golf and sport fishing. His love for these sports played a role in his plans to set up his hotel chain in Watamu, Maasai Mara and Nairobi. Cornwall enjoys beautiful weather. It has no winter or summer extremes as it borders a long coastline and dramatic moorland. This amiable weather supported Dicky’s desire to play rugby as it did for many others from Cornwall where it is a major sport.

  416.

Richard Dicky Evans, the owner of Hemingways Watamu and Hemingways Nairobi. Photo/Tuko/NairobiLeo

  417.
How Did Richard Evans Come to Kenya?

  418.
After graduating from Kings College in 1966 as a civil engineer, he landed a lucrative position with the World Bank and the United Nations in 1967. His role was a consulting engineer in urban infrastructure upgrades, sewerage supply works and dam design and construction. One of his initial projects was in Uganda where his expertise was needed in building a sustainable water supply channels in Jinja and Kampala.

  419.
His boss at the UNDP who was overseeing this project fell ill and did not make it to Kampala. It was Richard Evans who flew to East Africa in his place and he feel in love with the region.

  420.
“I was called upon to come down to Uganda and represent my boss. I immediately fell in love with East Africa. It had good climate and lovable people. I knew this was home,” The Standard reports.

  421.
Dicky flew to Mombasa in 1969 after his project in Kampala but for a different reason; a rugby tournament followed up by a short vacation. Mombasa struck his thought to invest in the hospitality industry.

  422.
“I loved the beach vistas. I tried my hand in fishing and liked it too. There was no place like Watamu,” he recalls.

  423.
Soon, he was back in Uganda, carrying Watamu’s magical nature. His brief sojourn at the Coast planted a small seed that would later grow into a mighty hospitality empire. However, things took a turn for the worst on January 25, 1971. The then Ugandan army general Idi Amin overthrew the Milton Obote-led government and launched one of the most ruthless atrocities Uganda ever saw. Under Idi Amin’s 8-year tenure, at least 300,000 people died.

  424.
The Ugandan tyrant ordered Dicky and several of his colleagues from the UNDP to transition to lecturing at Makerere University. He later ordered for their execution and this instilled a lot of fear in him that he left Uganda for England to save his life. Luckily, he made it out and took some time to mourn his colleagues but returned to Mombasa the same year.

  425.

Hemingways Watamu Resort. [Photo: Booking.com]

His employer assigned him a water supply project in Kenya’s coast and dam construction for coffee farms in the country. It is during this time that he met Gary Cullen who later on became his business partner and fellow golfer. Dicky ventured into Kenya’s horticultural sector in 1982 when he established Homegrown in Naivasha. He operated it for 23 years and later sold it to James Finlay’s in 2007 and it rebranded to Flamingo Holdings.

  426.
How Did Hemingways Start?

  427.
Richard Evans purchased Seafarers Hotel in Watamu, a 22-acre property owned by a British war hero. He had no idea of how to run a hotel but he amazingly transformed it into a world-class beach hotel by 1988. Dicky invested $10.5 million (Ksh1.38 billion in today’s value) to refurbish the hotel in 1988. It took him 18 months to create the luxurious Hemingways Watamu with 39 rooms.

  428.
Currently, the hotel has a total of 21 luxury apartments for sale with four-, two- and one-bedroom units for sale. The prices range between $34,000 and $1 million.

  429.
Hemingways Nairobi

  430.
He built it after Hemingways Watamu. Its architecture was inspired by an American sports club. The 45-room hotel is an architectural marvel that overlooks the scenic Ngong Hills.

  431.
“We settled on a model based on such historical plantation houses – elegant and with lots of space,” he adds. Hemingways Nairobi is the Augusta version of luxury in the Kenyan capital. It hosts the who is who in and outside Kenya. American R&B artist Asanti stayed here in 2020 during her visit to Nairobi National Park.

  456.

Is it a surprise that Morocco is the best country to retire in Africa? The North African country doesn’t cross a lot of minds but it is the perfect place to be in retirement. Far from misconceptions associated with its culture and traditions as a Muslim-dominated country; it is a paradise on earth.

  457.
Interestingly, a lot of foreigners settled down in a nation with an exceptionally varied environment. Morocco features sunny beaches, cold mountains, thick cedar woods, dry deserts, and a low cost of living. Infrastructure is modern, the government is steady, and it’s safe. Besides, there is widespread use of Arabic, Spanish, French, and English.

  458.
Why Morocco is the Best Country to Retire in Africa

  459.
Morocco is an absolute gem for anyone looking to have a new life in retirement. There is a lot that the Berber-dominated country offers. Talk of the calm aura and scenery that the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Oceans present; heavenly. Looking further at why Morocco is the best country to retire in Africa, most expats cite the fun experience as the leading reason.

  460.

A group of expats in Morocco having a good time. Photo/Getty Images

  461.
Unlike other African countries, popular Moroccan cities such as Marrakech, Casablanca, Essaouira, Rabat and Tangier charm foreigners into settling here permanently. Pleasant weather and an easy life appeal the most to retirees especially those from the US and Europe where life moves very fast.

  462.
Is It a Good Idea to Live in Morocco?

  463.
Living and retiring in Morocco is a great idea. With an interest in its five major cities, you will understand in depth why Morocco is the best country to retire in Africa. Here is a review of what each of these cities offers.

  464.
Marrakech

  465.
Marrakech is a tourist hub owing to its cultural immersion. It oozes a lot of energy, with its bustling medina (old town), breathtaking architecture, and mouthwatering cuisine, which all offer a full cultural immersion.

  466.
Essaouira

  467.

Essaouira city in Morocco. 468.
Compared to Marrakech, this quaint seaside city has a more laid-back vibe. Those looking for a slower pace of life and proximity to the Atlantic Ocean love Essaouira more. It has stunning beaches, a laid-back atmosphere, and a developing art scene.

  469.
Rabat

  471.
Casablanca

  472.
As the largest Moroccan city and the country’s capital, Casablanca offers a lively commercial community in a contemporary setting. Its appeal is to foreigners looking for a city where they can put their skills and have a taste of Western conveniences.

  473.
Tangier

  474.
Tangier city which is at the meeting point of Europe and Africa has a thriving art scene in addition to a distinctive cultural mix. It appeals to expats who are lured to a more bohemian lifestyle and historical relevance. Culture and history are great ways for retirees to spend time as they learn and understand the Berber world.

  475.
Is Morocco a Good Place to Live and Work?

  476.
Without a doubt, Morocco is an excellent place to live and work. The country’s social, economic and political setting supports quality living. Family makes up Morocco’s social life and most expats learn to live with this.

  477.
Secondly, it is a peaceful country despite its very religious and conservative population. Its continuous social, economic, and political reform agenda makes it a desirable option for a large number of foreigners. Once you provide proof of income to the authorities, you get a residency permit. Beneficiaries of this program describe it as the most efficient process in the country’s administrative section.

  478.
What do Most People in Morocco do for a Living?

  479.
Most people in Morocco are in the tourism and agriculture sectors. Renewable energy, sports and small microenterprises also provide a living for the people. It is estimated that 39%, of Morocco’s population farm and rear livestock for a living while an equally high number is in the tourism sector. Tourism is a leading foreign exchange earner as at least 10 million tourists visit Morocco each year.

  480.
Conclusion

  481.
Marrakech, the Atlas Mountains, beautiful Essaouira, food and social culture provide retirees with their long-thought-of life after retirement. For those who love a lively lie and sedate lifestyle, different Moroccan cities have it all.

  505.

The global fashion industry has referenced African fashion for years. It’s no surprise that you picture the beauty of West African dress styles. Everything about fashion in West Africa is amazing. Whether it is the fresh shapes and vibrant colours the world yearns for or the once-a-year Lagos Fashion Show Week which brings the household and upcoming designers together and the best models from different parts of the world. Today, we focus on West African dress styles and how the fashion industry in this part of the continent has grown over the years.

  506.
What Is the Traditional Dress of West Africa?

  507.
For a long time, the majority of Africans did not dress for warmth, thanks to the continent’s warm climates. The first clothing in West Africa and the continent at large were furs, skin and hides and bark cloth. The rest of the body was simply covered with decorations.

  508.

West African dress styles. 509.
Whereas men put on loin clothes, women were satisfied with wearing wraps around their waists. In other communities, girls used to wear just skirts and only started covering the whole body after getting married. When shipping routes opened between Asia, Europe and Africa, trade increased and uncommon items were sold to Africans. These included buttons, shells and beads which Africans started to decorate their simple clothes with.

  510.
Since each community has their own unique fashion sense, it’s impossible to pick the traditional dress of Africa. Overall, these dresses shared a few things in common – rich colours, intricate patterns, of course, cultural significance.

  511.
What Garment Is Worn in West Africa?

  512.
Modern West Africa is very colourful. Clothes are made with a range of various materials, including cotton, fur, flax, chiffon, silk, jute, among others.

  513.
Below are some of the traditional clothes that make the best West African dress styles:

  514.

  515.
Kente: Kente, which comes from the word kenten translating to basket in Akan dialect Asante, is a type of silk and cotton fabric that has its origin among the Ewe and Ashanti people of Ghana. It is made of interwoven cloth strips and is also worn by many other communities in West Africa that have been influenced by the Akans.

  516.
Dashiki: Dashiki is one of the most popular clothing and is known to make the best West African dress styles. For starters, the name dashiki is Yoruba and it refers to a colourful garment that covers the upper part of the body. Dashiki has its origin in West Africa but has spread in other parts of the continent and beyond. In East Africa they refer to it as ‘kitenge’.

  517.
Boubou: Boubou is another popular garment in West Africa that is mostly associated with Nigerians. It is a classic robe made of one large rectangle of fabric and has an opening in the centre of the neck. Boubou is worn by both women and men. The Senegalese boubou is called grand boubou.

  518.
Isiagu: Also called Chieftaincy, isiagu is a highly prestigious attire that has its roots among the Igbo people of Nigeria. The word isiagu translates to the head of a leopard but you will be surprised to see that the clothing actually has a head of a lion. It signifies pride, authority and power.

  519.
Toghu: Also known as Atoghu, toghu is a colourful fabric, that is beautifully decorated and very common among the Bamileke community in Cameroon. In most cases, it is usually black, orange or gold. Just like isiagu, toghu also demonstrated the power and was previously worn by those in power or authority.

  520.
Iro and buba: Iro and buba have their roots in Nigeria and are one of the garments used to make the best West African dress styles. The clothing is very common among the Yoruba people.
  521.

White lace iro and buba, Photo/ Modavracha.

  522.

  523.
What Are West Africa’s Colours?

  524.
Just like in many other parts of the world, the colour of a cloth someone puts on in West Africa means something, just as shown below:

  525.

  526.
Black: Black means mourning and funeral rites

  527.
Grey: This one symbolizes cleansing and healing rites. It could also mean ashes

  528.
White: Also means cleansing. However, it is also worn during the festive season

  529.
Purple: Associated with femininity and is mostly worn by women

  530.
Maroon: Maroon means healing

  531.
Pink: Pink represents feminine qualities

  532.
Red: Red means death or bloodshed.

  533.
Green: Green relates to land and harvest

  534.
