Fine art photography explores the intersection of photographic technique and creative vision by transforming ordinary subjects into compelling visual stories, and this month we're celebrating it in our latest installment of Through the Lens.

This edition of Through the Lens is a homage to the photographers that bring some extra creativity, artistic vision and personal flare to their work. While photography can be perceived as straightforward documentation of a person, place, or moment in time, fine art photography introduces some extra imagination and magic into the photographic process. Through this approach, viewers can see everyday objects in completely new ways, and deeper stories unfold that we might otherwise miss. We see some of the finest examples of this genre across Flickr. We reached out to photographers who inspire us daily with their fine art photography and asked them to share their thoughts on creating images with art and imagination at the forefront.

Meet micke vmix

Photographer and Flickr member micke vmix regularly shares gorgeous photos on Flickr. Their creativity and ability to draw viewers into scenes that seem captured from magical otherworlds is exactly why we wanted to learn about their creative process.

Flickr: What role does post-processing play in your artistic vision versus capturing it in-camera?

micke vmix: I would say it’s a significant portion. Most of the time nature does a good job providing the mood already but I just like to go a bit further. To do that I only use raw-files because everything is done in “the moment” and there is usually no time to alter things more than aperture and shutter time. To rate how it mostly works for me, it’s first subject vs background. Second is lens characteristics. Third, post-processing and fourth the camera. In percentage, 30%/30%/30%/10%. Post-processing is only done in Capture One from raw file to jpg.

Flickr: What’s your relationship with “rules” of composition – when do you follow them versus break them intentionally?

mv: I would like to say that I don’t care about the “rules” of composition. But in reality I seem to use them a lot without thinking about them…When to break them? Sometimes it’s not possible to use them and sometimes it just looks better with a different composition. Live view and a flip screen on the camera is a friend here.

Flickr: What do you hope viewers take away from your work?

mv: I hope to just bring a little different view of the ordinary things in nature.

Meet Catherine Sienko

Catherine Sienko, aka coyotecat on Flickr, is an artist, photographer and print-maker located in Arizona. She’s been featured in many esteemed publications from National Geographic Magazine to the Smithsonian Magazine. As an artist and creative, Catherine’s work embraces that fine art approach that inspires us, so we asked her a few questions about her process.

Flickr: How do you approach lighting to serve your conceptual goals rather than just technical needs?

Catherine Sienko: Year round, during the day in Southern Arizona, I approach lighting using a broad spectrum SPF 70 sunscreen and I wear a wide brim hat. I’m an outdoor photographer. 98% of the photographs I take are taken on my acreage. The shade of a Palo Verde or Mesquite tree is always nice. A rainy day would be a blessing. I never thought about conceptual goals. Truthfully, I had to look up “Approach lighting to serve conceptual goals, photography.” It does not apply to me.

Flickr: Do you work on multiple projects simultaneously, or focus on one series at a time?

CS: I’ve been working erratically and eccentrically on multiple film and digital photography projects for over 65+ years. I just came across some photos I took of my dog with my Dad’s Rolleicord. I had to be 8 years old when I took it. Here it is 60 years later and I’m still taking pictures of my dog. I still have the Rolleicord.

Flickr: How has your artistic vision evolved over the years?

CS: I really dislike the phrase “Artistic Vision.” Too many individuals with cameras use it to justify photographs that aren’t very good. If that floats their boat, so be it. So, “How has my photography evolved over the years?” I’ve become much more disciplined. I’m very selective with the subject matter that I photograph. I don’t crop. I don’t use photo editing software. I continue to print my own photographs. I believe its imperative to have a hands on portfolio.

Want to boost your Flickr activity? This month on Flickr Fundamentals, we'll share tips to increase engagement and grow your followers. With some dedication and genuine interaction, you'll see more activity on your account soon.

You’ve got your Flickr site set up and you’re regularly uploading photos and checking your activity feed, but you’ve reached a bit of a lull and need some guidance to reach the next level. There’s no perfect formula for building your audience on Flickr, but there are some tried and true strategies that can increase the visibility of your work. Flickr is home to a thriving community of photographers and creatives, and with some dedication, consistency and artistry, you can grow your following and build meaningful connections. This edition of Flickr Fundamentals explores the best ways to kickstart your growth journey.

Build your photography community

There is an overwhelming consensus among Flickr members that Flickr requires consistent and authentic engagement to thrive. With 21 years of experience, we’ve collected some of the most tried and true ways that engagement works on our platform.

Join Flickr Groups

Over the past year we’ve made finding community on Flickr easier, whether it’s through our Discover page –providing group suggestions based on interests – or our new Groups page –highlighting popular, well-attended groups. One thing is certain: groups are where community is fostered. That’s why one of the best ways to expand engagement on Flickr is finding groups that speak to your interests and getting involved.

Things to keep in mind as you get started:

Join groups that are relevant to your interests. Whether it’s a specific genre, location or camera brand, find a topic you feel connected to.

Once you’ve landed on a group, take time to comment on others’ photos and participate in discussions. This increases your visibility within the platform and can lead to more views and follows.

Post photos regularly but never spam. Mass adding photos to groups can be perceived as disingenuous and may also result in being banned.

Focus on quality groups that generate actual engagement rather than quantity.
Build relationships through exploration

A popular strategy used to find new and exciting content on Flickr is to visit the Explore page. Every day, 500 photos are featured on Explore, showcasing a diverse collection of images for members to enjoy. Using the Explore page as a tool to start building your network is an efficient and interesting way to cover a lot of ground all in one place. Find a photo you like and give the photographer a follow, it’s as simple as that. Once you’ve found some new photographers on Explore, check out their Faves pages to grow your network even further. Members are notified when they receive a new follower and this can prompt them to check out your site in return.

A technical approach with SEO

You’ve probably heard the term SEO in reference to internet searches and discoverability online, and it’s relevant on Flickr too. SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a practice that helps increase the chance of your content being discovered on the internet. We’ve created a quick list of ways to begin improving your site’s SEO.

Use Tags: Adding tags to your photos is important for improving the discoverability of your content. Make sure you include tags that are specific and also tags that are broad. Include tags that focus on subject matter, camera gear and genre. This practice will help improve your photos performance on internal Flickr searches and can also help influence external searches. Adding location data to your photos helps with local SEO.

Post at peak times and consistently: Posting photos to Flickr earlier may increase the chances of them being seen by a wider audience throughout the day. Make sure you are also posting on a regular basis. The key is consistency – regularly uploading high-quality content will gradually improve your search visibility and attract more viewers to your Flickr site.

Crossposting is essential: Share your Flickr photos across other social media platforms. Embed them in blog posts and link back to your Flickr profile from your website. Creating these valuable backlinks drives traffic from multiple sources.

Use refined titles and descriptions on photos and albums: Use descriptive, keyword-focused titles that people might search for. For example, instead of “IMG_1234.jpg,” use “Golden Gate Bridge at Sunset San Francisco.” Include detailed captions that use relevant keywords. What’s in the photo and where was it taken? Then organize your photos into themed albums with SEO-friendly titles and descriptions. The easier your content is to index by search engines, the better chance at improving your photos’ discoverability.

Share your artistry

Introduce yourself to the Flickr community. Filling out your About page is a must if you want to network on Flickr. When someone comes across your site, your About page is their first impression, so don’t skip this step. Don’t forget to include links to other social media platforms in your Flickr bio too.

Focus on Visual Impact: Share the work you are most proud of. Eye-catching photos with visible detail that look compelling even as thumbnails will get more clicks.

Focus on Authenticity: Photographers on Flickr deeply respect artistry and collaboration over viral trends. With a focus on authenticity over algorithms, Flickr has held a level of integrity in the photography community the other platforms lack. Keep that deep respect for authenticity in mind as you provide and seek feedback on the site. The interactions built from this shared appreciation for artistry will result in a network full of peers and collaborators that you can continue to learn and grow with for years to come.

Mindset and expectations

Growth in any community takes time and consistent effort, and that holds true for Flickr as well. With regular engagement and participation, you’ll be rewarded with connections to talented creatives all over the world, but patience is key! The growth made possible through these interactions can be limitless and well worth the time you invest. Enjoy the journey.

Gabrielle’s journey into photography began unexpectedly during college, when a video editing class set her off on her path to photography. “I didn’t know anything about photography, videography, or editing,” she shares. “But my professor let me borrow her personal camera for the semester, and I remember walking downtown that day, taking pictures of everything that caught my eye. That day, I fell in love with all things storytelling and photography.”

As the semester came to an end – Gabrielle’s professor insisted she keep the camera and keep creating. “Carol Dykers was the first person to believe and invest in me as an artist and I wouldn’t be here without her.”

Gabrielle identifies as a documentary photographer. Her approach is simple yet powerful: she strives to be a quiet observer – capturing raw, unposed moments. “I love to observe and capture moments as they happen, unprovoked,” she says. “I try to be present, observant, and as inconspicuous as possible.” Her process doesn’t rely on pre-scouted locations. Instead, she trusts her eye and instincts. “Sometimes I spot a place while walking or driving and make a note for later. Other times, I just walk, observe, and wait for the shot to appear.” As for her gear, Gabrielle keeps it minimal but meaningful. “I don’t have a favorite setup, but my essentials are a digital camera, a film camera, a camcorder, and a walking stick.”

When asked what message or feelings she wants viewers to take away from her work she said, “I want people to feel a sense of joy, peace, and resilience when they come across my work. Photography is a breath of fresh air for me and I want what I document to share the same sentiment.”

One image that stands out for Gabrielle was taken during the Black August celebration in Durham, North Carolina, in 2023. “It’s one of my favorites because of what it says without words. It’s a beautiful, raw image of life and love. I was honored to document that moment in real time.” To capture it, she waited patiently from a distance, careful not to disturb the moment she was witnessing. “I moved up just enough to frame them, only before I took the picture.”

As a member of Black Women Photographers, Gabrielle has found both community and opportunity. “I’ve really appreciated the support, conversations, resources, and connections Polly and the BWP members provide. It’s a special space.”

When she’s not behind the lens, Gabrielle enjoys to crochet or do any other fiber art, pottery, roller-blading, listening to music, and going for walks.

To follow more of Gabrielle’s work or get in touch, visit ellejoseph.com or find her on Instagram at @byellejoseph.
