40.
My name is Smrithi Mohan, and I am the General Counsel of Awesome, the incredible company behind your favorites: SmugMug, Flickr, and This Week in Photo. As I sit down to write this blog article for World Intellectual Property Day, I find myself reflecting on the theme of this year’s celebration: “IP and the SDGs: Building our common future with innovation and creativity.” Not sure what SDGs are? Neither are a lot of people! Which is why I think this year’s theme is so important, and why this subject is near and dear to me personally.
41.
42. Sustainable development goals, or SDGs for short, are part of the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In the UN’s own words, this agreement “provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.” At its heart are 17 SDGs around ending poverty and hunger, providing quality healthcare and education, and building sustainable growth and infrastructure.
43.
44. At Awesome, the world’s best and brightest photography company, I find myself sitting squarely at the intersection of intellectual property and sustainable development—and innovation and creativity have played a pivotal role in getting me here. So, today, I’d like to reflect on how I got here, and what makes this such a special place to be.

  45.
The early years: Innovation starts at home.

  46.
From a young age, my parents instilled in me the ability to see the world through the lens of creativity, emphasizing how we could make a difference and improve people’s lives through innovation. My father, a Ph.D. in electrical engineering, is an inventor with numerous patents to his name, a published author, and a seasoned veteran in the telecom industry and academia. Meanwhile, my mother holds a master’s degree in computer science and brought the spirit of innovation not only to her workplace but also to our home, shaping my brother’s and my upbringing with the power of creativity.

  47.
This early foundation was pivotal in shaping my worldview. Though the concept of sustainable development goals did not exist at the time, when I visited remote villages and slums in parts of India as a child, my eyes were opened to poverty, hunger, and a lack of access to good health, well-being, and quality education. It was through this experiential education my parents gifted me with that I became acutely aware of the vast number of underprivileged children and orphans worldwide. This realization ignited a passion within me to leverage my privilege and resources to create positive change.

  48.
With the limited power I had during my high-school years, I founded an organization called Reach Out, where students fostered pen-pal relationships with orphans in underprivileged countries. During a time when the Internet was still in its infancy, I honed my skills in HTML and web design to create a website to showcase our organization’s efforts and appeal for donations and partnerships. It was a way to extend our reach and bring something special to a child in a distant corner of the world who lacked the privileges we often took for granted. We fundraised to send care packages to these children, delivering food, clothing, books, and toys, particularly during holidays. What started as a small initiative blossomed into a movement as other high-school students from different schools joined in, spreading our efforts far and wide.

  49.

  50.
Finding Awesome: How like-minded partnerships can bring SDGs to life.

  51.
This profound lifelong passion to leverage my creative and innovative abilities, along with my dedication from a young age to volunteer and give back to the community, has guided me to this extraordinary company, whose values align so closely with my own and where I am genuinely honored to spearhead legal initiatives. Our mission at Awesome is building a better world through the power of photography. Through this creative medium, I am so grateful that we engage in vital missions that align with many SDGs, especially those around climate, sustainability, and environmental impact.

  52.

  53.
As proud partners with The Conservation Alliance, alongside esteemed organizations like Rivian, REI, and Patagonia (among many others), we are part of Mobilizing for Monuments—a coalition dedicated to protecting our public lands for the benefit of our economy, culture, and way of life. Last month, we leveraged our intellectual-property strength of copyright to create compelling photography and videography, immersing viewers in the essence of these landscapes as we showcased their magic in Washington, D.C. We joined forces with fellow advocates and engaged in meetings with key decision-makers, advocating for national-monument designations and expansions. These endeavors have the potential to safeguard more than three million acres of public lands, highlighting the transformative influence of photography and demonstrating the impactful application of intellectual property, creativity, and a shared commitment to continuously enhance our world and secure our future.

  54.

  55.
And that’s just in the past year! Looking further back, Awesome’s commitment to environmental sustainability is clear: In addition to being a Climate Pledge signatory, we are proud to have achieved Climate Neutral Certification, demonstrating our dedication to reducing our carbon footprint and combating climate change. The rigorous standards set forth by Change Climate, the managing body of Climate Neutral certification, helped us implement a range of innovative ways to measure, reduce, and offset our carbon emissions. And while we’re now certified, we’re far from done. We’re committed to continually improving our sustainability practices to help build a greener, more sustainable future for all.

  56.

  57.
Beyond sustainability and climate, Awesome is also focused on other SDGs like gender equality and reduced inequalities, and our people team is constantly reevaluating our company policies to ensure we’re consistent in important programs like pay equity, family benefits, physical and mental healthcare, and work–life balance. We also go out of our way to showcase these principles outwardly, as when we participated in the #InspiringInclusion campaign for International Women’s Day, elevating the stories of remarkable women photographers across the globe. We’re actively building a culture that fosters inspiration, growth, and opportunity for all.

  58.

  59.
Intellectual property and our common future.

  60.
Now, you might be asking what all this has to do with intellectual property? Well, photographers are creators, and creators need the protections of intellectual-property policy to safeguard their art, their memories, and their livelihood. The longevity and sustainability of Awesome and its brands is absolutely essential to ensuring our customers’ photos are safe, now and long into the future. That’s why in addition to our work addressing key SDGs, we are also actively developing an innovation and intellectual-property program here at Awesome. This initiative will harness the value of innovation, intellectual property, design thinking, and creativity to benefit our colleagues, customers, partners, and the world at large.

  61.

  62.
World Intellectual Property Day is a reminder to me that each of us must collectively think about and discuss how we can tackle the obstacles facing our world today. The little girl in me, whose eyes were opened to the stark contrast of privilege and disadvantage, and whose world expanded when her parents revealed the impact she could make by thinking beyond conventional boundaries, is overjoyed to be part of a company that encourages me to continue exploring, applying, and building upon the foundation I established during those formative years.

  63.
Each step we take, both individually and collectively, brings us closer to solutions and makes the world a better place. Today is our reminder to keep applying our creativity and innovative power to continue developing intellectual property that serves the betterment of all. The more we do so, the more we can build a brighter, more equitable future for generations to come. Happy World Intellectual Property Day!

  167.
If you’ve ever visited Flickr’s trending page, you will see that nature and landscape photography takes center stage on a regular basis. That is for good reason, there are endless opportunities to capture unique, beautiful and diverse images within these photographic themes. For example, just check out our recent Flickr Social discussion thread, highlighting Earth themed photos for tomorrow’s Earth Explore Takeover. There are over 2,000 replies to the thread, showing there is no shortage of nature and landscape photographers on Flickr.

  168.
Nature and Landscape Flickr Groups have thrived on Flickr from the very beginning and we want to introduce you to a few of them. From mountains, to oceans and all of the natural world in between, we want to introduce you to some of these popular Flickr groups. If they inspire you, give them a join!

  282.
Buckle up for the Mobilizing for Monuments Road Trip

  283.
At Flickr, we’re committed to building a better world through the power of photography. Mobilizing for Monuments is dedicated to the protection and preservation of our public lands for the collective benefit of all. So, naturally, we were a perfect fit for the project: photography can play a powerful role in preservation, showcasing the unparalleled beauty of some of the most precious–and often, most vulnerable–places on earth.
284.
285. We imagine a world where the beauty and profound significance of these landscapes are not only preserved but also shared, celebrated, and shielded through the impact of photography. That’s why we packed up and hit the road with other passionate conservationists for the Mobilizing For Monuments Road Trip.

  286.
This transformative journey, which took place from November 7-13, 2023, allowed us to document the voices and stories of local community members, tribal leaders, conservation non-profits, politicians, and business leaders advocating for the protection of public lands.

  319.
When asked how she got started in photography she shared, “When I was thirteen, my parents let me use their old, Nikon film camera. In the 2010s, Tumblr heavily influenced me then, so I focused on taking pictures of things I deemed aesthetically pleasing. When I finally received my first DSLR as a Christmas gift, I immediately began capturing portraits of friends, asking them to pose in various photoshoots.”

  329.
Gabrielle describes her photography style mainly as editorial, and recently has a growing interest in archival photography. 336.
She shared that she enjoys shooting in spaces with an abundance of leading lines already present. “Sometimes that includes natural settings such as fallen trees or grassy areas. 339.

  340.
We asked Gabrielle to share a recent photo shared in the Black Women Photographers group and tell us about it. Upon sharing the above photo she said, “I chose this shot from a series I made called Deep and Dark and Dangerous, because I love the expression the model is making. While the features of her face are mostly lost within the movement and shadows of the scarf draped over her, they are still outlined by the ripples of the accessory.”

  341.
When asked about capturing and editing the photo she said, “To capture the photo, I had two people on either side of the model shake the scarf as she was underneath it. With this, I was hoping to achieve a sense of fluidity and movement, almost as if she were in water. The title of the photo comes from one of my favorite childhood horror stories “Deep and Dark and Dangerous.” I used Lightroom to darken the mood of the photo even further, creating what I feel is a mysterious and perhaps emotional feeling that matches the expression of the model.”

  387.
We’ve added some new icons as well! You’ll now see some new additions for the favorite, comment, and share icons. We’ve also added a three-dot menu to both the Lightbox and the info screen to make accessing your options easier. 388.
A new viewing option for your Photostream!

  389.
We’ve recently added a new layout option for viewing your Photostream on the web. With this new layout, you’ll see more information about your photos at a glance, such as the number of faves and comments. From this layout you can also reply to comments on your photos without having to leave the Photostream page. The two layout options can be found in the upper righthand corner of your Photostream page.

  390.
The first layout option is the one you may be familiar with already. No added icons or actions are available below the photos when this layout is selected.

  392.
The new layout can be found within the second icon as noted below. That option will place the title, fave, comment and ‘add to album/group’ option below each image. This is a particularly significant improvement for touchscreen devices, where members cannot hover to see this information on the regular layout.

  602.
With April 8th’s total solar eclipse quickly approaching, we want to continue featuring the amazing astrophotography community on Flickr. We recently highlighted several astrophotography Flickr groups. If you didn’t get a chance to check those out, you can read about them in our recent blog post. Today, we want to introduce you to Mike Hawkins, a talented photographer who has photographed many different genres of photography over the years, and has an amazing gift for capturing astrophotography. He recently walked us through his process in capturing this stunning photo, “The Lagoon and Trifid Nebulas | M8 and M20” for this installment of 16 Questions about 1 Photo. Enjoy!

  603.
1. Please introduce yourself. Who are you? What do you do?

  604.
My name is Michael Hawkins. I live in the mountains of northern New Mexico, and I enjoy skiing, golf, photography, astronomy, and small-town life. For my day job, I work in marketing for a ski resort (yes, we have great skiing in New Mexico!), so I get to bring a camera with me to work every day!

  605.
2. How long have you been into photography, and what drew you to it?

  606.
I first picked up a camera in my late teens, and I’ve been a photographer (both professional and not) for nearly twenty years. I enjoy documenting my life, the people I’ve met, and the landscapes I’ve seen along the way via old manual-focus lenses. Photography allows the two sides of my brain to meet in the middle, and it just brings me a lot of joy.

  607.
3. In one sentence, please describe what you captured in this shot.

  608.
I captured the Lagoon and Trifid Nebulae, which are located in the southern skies in the bands of our Milky Way Galaxy, in the constellation Sagittarius. The Lagoon Nebula is visible to the naked eye, and the Trifid Nebula can be found with binoculars.

  609.
4. What style of photography would you describe this as and do you typically take photographs in this style?

  610.
This style of photography is known as astrophotography, and it’s one of the many forms of photography that I enjoy. I take astrophotos as often as the weather allows.

  611.
5. When and where was this photo taken?

  612.
This shot was taken in my backyard near Taos, New Mexico, which has Bortle 3 skies. It was taken in the late summer when these objects can be seen near the center of our Milky Way Galaxy.

  613.
6. Was anyone with you when you took this photo?

  614.
My dog Stella kept me company overnight, and my partner Kelly wasn’t far away; she was just fast asleep in bed.

  615.
7. What equipment (hardware and software) did you use?

  616.
Equipment: Celestron CGEM Mount, Nikon 500mm f/4 P AI-S – shot at f/5.6, Sony a7RIII (unmodified), Altair 60mm Guide scope, GPCAM2 Mono Camera

  617.
Software: SharpCap, PHD2, PixInsight Lightroom, Photoshop

  618.
8. What drew you to take this photo?

  619.
I’ve been into astronomy for years, so I bought a telescope, knowing I’d eventually want to learn to do astrophotography. Truthfully, it always felt overwhelming. During the COVID quarantines of 2020, I (like a lot of people) had a ton of extra time at home and decided that was the moment to dive in finally. I bought autoguiding gear and taught myself how to take and process long exposures of the night sky.

  620.
9. How many attempts did it take to get this shot? How long did it take you to get one that you were satisfied with?

  621.
While I’ve tried and failed many times with astrophotography, this image was captured on the first try.

  622.
10. Did you edit this photo?

  623.
Oh yes! This image is heavily processed, as any astrophoto is. To achieve photos like these, you need to take many long exposures and stack them together to reduce the signal-to-noise ratio so you can stretch out the image and bring out the faint light. I feel that astrophotography is more data acquisition and data manipulation than “real” photography.

  624.
11. What encouraged you to share this photo online and with others?

  625.
I’ve loved sharing my work on Flickr since 2007. It’s where I post everything. I do it both for archival purposes and, well…because I like getting attention for my work!

  626.
12. Did you learn anything in the process of taking, editing, or sharing this photo?

  627.
I learned a lot! For the bulk of the processing, I used a program called PixInsight, which is designed specifically for astrophotography. For a long time, I felt that I could get “good enough” results using some (really great) free tools. However, spending time watching YouTube tutorials and following along has taught me so much about PixInsight, which I feel has a STEEP learning curve…but worth it for the excellent results.

  628.
13. Do you remember what you had for breakfast (or lunch or dinner) the day you took this photo?

  629.
I ate Madras Chicken for dinner, one of many great recipes from a “Half Baked Harvest” cookbook that I borrowed from the local library.

  630.
14. What would you like people to take away from this photo?

  631.
I hope that this image inspires people to learn more about space and our universe in general (it’s all REALLY cool) and that it’s worth taking the time to look up at the night sky. The light from the Lagoon Nebula took ~5,000 years to travel to my camera sensor and ~9,000 years for the smaller Trifid Nebula! If you want to learn how to take astrophotos yourself, there are many great and free resources online.

  632.
15. Is there any feedback that you’d like to get on this shot?

  633.
I’m open to hearing feedback from other astrophotographers. I know the next step in upgrading my equipment is to purchase a monocamera and filters (to pull out even more detail), but I do enjoy using my regular old Sony camera and adapted vintage lenses for astrophotography for now!

  634.
16. How can anyone reading this, support your work?

  635.
They can follow me here on Flickr, check our my website or on Instagram as @mikehawkins, even though I try to spend as little time on there as possible! I enjoy Flickr the most and engage with more photographers and their photographs right here.

  638.
Mike Hawkins is a lifelong photographer who enjoys the challenge of shooting many genres of photography. These days he is most interested in astrophotography, ski photography, and the scenes of daily life.

  639.
He uses manual vintage lenses adapted to function on modern digital cameras. Vintage, manual lenses force him to slow down figuratively and literally to focus on what he is capturing. Older lenses often produce images full of unique character not found in the clinically sharp automatic lenses made today.

  663.
Heads up, a total solar eclipse is coming our way on April 8th. Here is what you need to know about the big event!

  664.

  665.

  666.

  667.
On Monday, April 8th, the sun will be putting on a show and we want to make sure you have all of the info you need to safely view, photograph and experience the event. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun blocking out the face of the Sun and across North America, many people are making plans to witness this rare event. If you’re planning to join the crowds to see it with your own eyes, make sure you’ve got your eclipse viewing checklist in order. From finding the perfect location to bringing along the appropriate gear to capture the moment, we want to help point you in the right direction.

  668.
Scout your location

  669.
The solar eclipse will be viewable in totality over a 110-mile-wide path which extends across parts of Mexico, the U.S and Canada. That means Flickr members all across North America will have a chance to venture toward the path of totality for a full view of the eclipse. If you’re considering a visit somewhere along that path, make sure to visit NASA’s interactive eclipse map first. If you reside outside of the path of totality, you can follow along with NASA online or enjoy a partial eclipse from your own backyard, with safety glasses of course!

  670.

  671.

  672.

  673.
Here are some tips for photographing a solar eclipse

  674.
Safety first!

  675.
You’ll need a special solar filter to protect your camera if you plan on photographing the eclipse as well as a pair of eclipse glasses for your eyes. NASA warns against using eclipse glasses directly with your camera as it is not enough protection when parts of the sun are still in view. It’s best practice to have protective gear for your eyes and for your camera, but make sure you do your due diligence to avoid purchasing safety glasses that have not been certified by a valid third party. While there are a lot of offerings available online, NASA suggests purchasing your protective gear directly from these approved sources. For more details on viewing a solar eclipse safely, make sure to check out NASA’s eclipse safety page.

  676.
Keep an eye out for local organizations that may be giving away free eclipse glasses. Thanks to the Solar Eclipse Activities for Libraries (SEAL) program, thousands of participating libraries will have a supply of free safety glasses to give the public. So make sure to check in with your local library to see if they are offering free eclipse safety gear or hosting any eclipse events near you.

  678.
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/ackniculous/36725697375/" title=""The Solar Eclipse At Coney Island." by B.C. 679.

  680.
Manual mode is your friend!

  681.
As for photographing the eclipse, automatic focus is not recommended for capturing the event so make sure to set your focus to manual for this one. According to the American Astronomical Society, “Set the ISO to 100 or 200, set the aperture to f/8, attach your solar filter to the lens, shoot a range of different short exposures of the Sun (likely in the range of 1/500 to 1/4000 second, and see which image turns out best.” For a detailed walkthrough of more suggested settings make sure to visit the official AAS site.

  682.
Look up AND around

  683.
If you’ve enjoyed a scroll through NASA’s Flickr site, then you’ll have come across many photos taken by NASA photographer Bill Ingalls. He reminds eclipse photographers to not miss out on photographing the human experience during the eclipse. Capturing the emotion and reaction to this impressive event is just as important as photographing the eclipse itself.

  689.

  690.
Share your photos!

  691.
Sharing your photos on Flickr is a great way to connect with others who enjoyed this special event with you. It also provides a way to extend your experience to other Flickr members who didn’t have the full view of the eclipse, so share those photos! We’re asking everyone to add the tag #TotalEclipse2024 to your eclipse photos. We’ll be working with NASA to curate a gallery of some of our favorite photos from the big day so if you’d like a chance for your photos to be featured, make sure to use the #TotalEclipse2024 tag. If you need a quick refresher on tagging photos, check out this blog post.

  692.
Another total eclipse will not happen again over the contiguous U.S until August of 2044 so if you are located in North America there’s no better time like the present to witness this amazing site. For more solar eclipse information, make sure to check out NASA’s official 2024 eclipse site. And, if you want to learn more about the unique research opportunities eclipses provide scientists, see what some of NASA’s scientists will be paying extra attention to on April 8th by visiting their eclipse research page.

  696.
In the meantime, we recently highlighted several astrophotography Flickr groups on Flickr. If you want to chat with other Flickr members who have been taking photos of celestial events for years, read the blog post and give some of those groups a join. We can’t wait to see your photos from the big day and to hear your stories. Make sure to use the #TotalEclipse2024 tag and be safe out there. Happy viewing!
