62.
Grand River has teamed up with Abul Mogard (pictured below) on a new album for Caterina Barbieri‘s light-year’s label.

63.
64.
65.
66.
On In uno spazio immenso, their first collaborative album, the pair “gaze longingly into the abyss, capturing atemporality, splendour, and tranquility with confident, impressionistic sonic strokes,” we’re told.

67.
68.
69.
70.
“Dynamic and poignant,” the record “balances on a knife-edge between booming, operatic grandeur and soft-focus simplicity, casting as much light on the subtle outlines and illusory rhythms as
it does its dense, almost overpowering textures.”

71.
72.
73.
74.
Grand River, the Berlin-based Dutch-Italian composer and sound designer born Aimée Portioli, has been evolving her unique musical language since she released Crescente on Donato Dozzy and Neel’s Spazio Disponibile imprint in 2017. You can read more about her in her XLR8R feature here.

75.
76.
77.
78.
Abul Mogard, meanwhile, is just one of veteran Italian producer Guido Zen’s many aliases, and over a series of albums for labels like Ecstatic, Houndstooth, and VCO, he’s blended post-industrial ambience and blissful shoegaze memories.

141.
142.
143.
Open Space and Domesticated Records have released an album from DJ Fitness, an alias of Pablo Arrangoiz.

144.
145.
146.
147.
You might not have heard of Arranzgoiz but there’s a reasonable chance you’ve heard his music.

148.
149.
150.
151.
Based in Miami, Florida, the young Mexican artist has quietly been building his back catalog, displaying a variety of styles and genres as Baüzer Vep, Glue Boy, Decima Vittima, Doctor Hotdog, and DJ Fitness.

152.
153.
154.
155.
And through this he has cultivated a small but dedicated cult following across Bandcamp and the United States—which is to say he’s come along way since he began playing drums at 11. You can read more about him in his XLR8R podcast here.

156.
157.
158.
159.
The DJ Fitness Program, his new album, features a fuel-packed double disc workout plan made exclusively for DJs focused on having health and strength. It features Open Space mainstay EZ Dee, underground hip-hop legend Sensational, and Bugzmain.

232.

233.
Over recent years, Iuly.B—Iulian Bivolaru—a DJ-producer based in Iasi, a major city in the north-eastern part of Romania, has released music on Rora, Visionquest, Mui en, Subtil, and Fuse London, while opening for DJs including such as Priku, Cezar, Praslea, SIT, Ion Ludwig, Christopher Ledger, Alci. Like all of those artists, he keeps private details to a minimum—but, also like them, his music is loaded with percussive details, crafting deep, hypnotic energies into merciless basslines. Nowhere is this more evident than on Dimensions, his debut album, released last month on Swiss label Adam’s Bite. Across 11 tracks, Bivolaru embraces the long-player format to deliver a range of psychedelic material in his signature, raw and subtly nuanced style. For this week’s XLR8R podcast, Bivolaru has delivered a mixed version of the album—tune in for one hour of raw minimal grooves from a rising talent.

234.
235.
236.
237.
01. What have you been up to recently?
I’ve been working a lot together with the Adam’s Bite team to finalize my debut album. It’s an immense pleasure to finally see it released.

238.
239.
240.
241.
02. What have you been listening to?
I am listening mostly to electronic music but from different sub-genres. Besides minimal house and techno, I am enjoying a lot some downtempo and sometimes I go to drum & bass. Listening to various genres is contributing a lot to my inspiration and to the process of learning by listening.

242.
243.
244.
245.
03. What is it that appeals to you about electronic music?
The drive that keeps me going comes from how I feel when listening to tracks which I really like, especially new music. The journey of discovering new music through digging or simply receiving it from producer friends or new artists brings joy and the desire to look for more.

246.
247.
248.
249.
04. When and where did you record this mix?
I have recorded this mix in my home studio in Iasi, Romania.

250.
251.
252.
253.
05. What setup did you use?
A simple DJ setup was needed: Allen & Heath Xone:92 as a mixer and two Pioneer DJ CDJ 2000 NXS2s. Because the tracks are already planned to flow one from another.

254.
255.
256.
257.
06. How did you choose the tracks you’ve included?
The presented tracks are from the debut album, Dimensions. They are in the same order as presented on the album and I have planned to offer a smooth experience from the beginning to the end.

258.
259.
260.
261.
07. How does it compare to what we might hear you play out live?
Playing a set depends on lots of factors such as venue, people, and feeling. The difference that you may notice is that I can bring a high level of energy when playing live, but the alteration with some dreamy sounds will be the same. I always like to offer contrast.

262.
263.
264.
265.
08. What’s next on your horizon?
I’ll probably have a new EP out by the end of this year, but until then I will focus on my current dates and enjoying the outcome of the debut album.

320.
321.
322.
A. G. Cook has released his third studio album, Britpop, via New Alias, his new label.

323.
324.
325.
326.
Inspiration for the album came when the London producer enjoyed a solo sojourn in rural Montana during lockdown whilst working on previous albums Apple and 7G, both of which landed in 2020.

327.
328.
329.
330.
A three-part, 24-song odyssey through Cook’s weird, wonderful, and wildly eclectic sonic universe, Britpop explores electronica, Britpop, and futuristic sounds.

331.
332.
333.
334.
It’s divided into three distinct chapters: Past, Present, and Future.

335.
336.
337.
338.
Disc one, Past, consists mainly of Cook’s signature electronic style while disc two, Present, showcases the aspects of Cook’s songwriting instincts that veer to his idea of “Britishness.” Finally, on disc three, Future, Cook jets off into the future—or his own distinctive understanding of what the future of music really means.

339.
340.
341.
342.
The album includes vocals from Charli XCX and contributions from Caroline Polachek, Alaska Reid, Addison Rae, and Oliver Leith.

446.
447.
South African DJ-producer DJ Lag, the alias of Lwazi Asanda Gwalahas, will release his second album, The Rebellion, next month.

448.
449.
450.
451.
The Rebellion marks a “bold evolution” of his distinctive gqom sound, we’re told, and builds on the success of his previous album, Meeting With The King.

452.
453.
454.
455.
Across 13 tracks, he solidifies his status as a trailblazer of the genre by “infusing innovation while honoring his musical heritage.”

456.
457.
458.
459.
The album promises an eclectic offering, exploring sounds like 3Step, afro-tech, amapiano, hip-hop, and even drill. It features a stellar roster of guest artists.

460.
461.
462.
463.
Originating from Durban, Gwalahas pioneered the gqom sound, crafting original tracks with little more than FruityLoops during his school days. His music quickly gained traction, with taxi drivers in Durban using his tracks to attract customers as early as 2012. Since then, he has embarked on numerous international tours.

464.
465.
466.
467.
You can check out his XLR8R podcast, an outing in nerve-shredding gqom, here.

468.
469.
470.
471.
To coincide with he announcement, Gwalahas has shared “Oke Oke,” which blends South African rhythms with Jazz Alonso’s vocals.

472.
473.
474.
475.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Gwalahas says: “Collaborating with Jazz was exhilarating. Her sound deeply connected with me, and our partnership unfolded seamlessly.”

543.
544.
545.
New Jersey-born Ali Berger will release a new EP on Scissor and Thread.

546.
547.
548.
549.
Berger is a producer now based in Pittsburgh after spending the 2010s in Boston and Detroit. His catalog of original music spans over 60 releases on his Trackland label and imprints like Spectral Sound and Sequencias.

550.
551.
552.
553.
On his debut for Scissor and Thread, he shares a multitude of sounds and atmospheres across the five tracks.

554.
555.
556.
557.
The record collects tracks from the last three years, plus “0221 (Serious Mix),” which is from 2018.

558.
559.
560.
561.
“There’s a full cross-section of production techniques represented here, from one-take jams to multi-tracked compositions, but through it all there’s a deep melancholy which (I hope) is tempered by enough groove to be uplifting,” Berger says. “Maintaining emotional balance takes constant, caring attention; music is a part of that process for me and these tracks reflect that.”

562.
563.
564.
565.
Last month, Frank & Tony, the founders of Scissor and Thread, put together a mix for XLR8R, which you can stream here. 614.
Luke Slater‘s L. B. Dub Corp project has released a new single with a remix by Burial.

615.
616.
617.
618.
Only the Good Times is released on Dekmantel, cut direct from studio tape master to limited white label vinyl.

619.
620.
621.
622.
Behind Only The Good Times lies the story of Eindhoven street character Arnol Kox, whose philosophical proclamations had become local legend. Slater managed to record Kox preaching the Dutch equivalent of the track title and the line is so poignant he turned it into a track.

623.
624.
625.
626.
Kox passed away in 2020, and so Only The Good Times became a heartfelt tribute to someone who embodied the misfit individuality Slater has been inspired by through his career.

627.
628.
629.
630.
“For me ‘Only the Good Times’ is a deeply emotional track,” says Slater. “It’s one of those tracks that ended up entwined in love and somehow life-affirming. My immediate thought was to get Burial to remix it, not only because he’s one of the most entrancing producers ever, but also because of our heartfelt connection and to get him away from his PlayStation for 10 seconds.”

631.
632.
633.
634.
Only the Good Times lands ahead of L. B. Dub Corp’s new album, Saturn to Home, which marks Slater’s debut on the Dutch label.

720.
Formed from an unexpected one-off collaboration for a remix for Crackhaus on Mutek_rec in 2003, Flabbergast is the alias of Guillaume Coutu Dumont and Vincent Lemieux. Launched in 2014, it draws on a wide array of influences including jazz and hip-hop, while fusing electronic sounds with organic instrumentation. Since 2014, the focus has shifted from spontaneous live improvisations to focused compositions and an increased presence in recorded music. In 2015, they released their debut 12″, Nr 1, on Circus Company, and they’ve since put out music on Yoyaku, their own Copier/Coller, and Switzerland’s Adam’s Bite—which is where they recently put out Default Mode Network, four tracks of wonky minimal. (Their debut album, Consolation in Constellation, will land on Paris label Chapelle XIV soon.) Their performances fuse DJing with live production; Lemieux on his records with Guillaume on his instruments.

721.
722.
723.
724.
For this week’s XLR8R podcast, they’ve delivered a segment of a recent performance at Le Salon Daomé in Montreal—a memorable night in front of their old friends in their hometown. “It’s always fun when we play over there because there is a good mix in the crowd,” Guillaume says. “Old ravers and younger freaks. That’s when the sauce really thickens.” Tune in for 83 minutes of free-wheeling minimal, techno, and dub, recorded on the fly.

725.
726.
727.
728.
01. What have you been up to recently?
We are currently on tour. We just finished the Berlin leg with a show at Hoppetosse. We have been keeping ourselves busy in the studio lately. Since the pandemic, the amount of music we’ve produced is quite staggering. Some of it will see the light of day in the upcoming month. The Default Mode Network EP is now out on Adam’s Bite, and 11:15 in Your Dream on our own label, Copier/Coller, will come out soon. We can also announce our first album, Consolation in Constellation, on Paris label Chapelle XIV. We are very excited about this one. It’s quite different from everything we did together thus far. This summer we are also releasing a first digital EP on our label. All that material has been created with a Yamaha Electone organ that we named Roberto. Then there will be a second EP for Circus Company.

736.
03. When and where did you record this set?
We recorded this set live at Salon Daomé in Montreal where we do occasional parties. We do two types of show. We have a full on machine live with only our music, like the one we’ll be performing during MUTEK in Dubai or this year’s 25th edition in Montreal. But we also do a hybrid version that usually better suits the club context. In that format Vince plays records while Guillaume plays live on top. It’s a very fun way to improvise and it’s very entertaining for both of us.

737.
738.
739.
740.
04. What setup did you use?
Vince used turntables and CDJs into an Allen & Heath Xone:92 mixer. I had the HandSonic HPD-20 drum pad, Eventide Pitchfactor delay, Waldorf Streichfett String synthesizer, Elektron Digitakt, and the computer and soundcard.

741.
742.
743.
744.
05. How did you choose the tracks you’ve included?
We absolutely never plan our sets. So this is fully improvised. Vince also chooses material that is sometime more stripped down than other tracks he could play in other moments. The fun thing is that we don’t do it in a back-to-back format. There are usually three channels open on the mixer at the same time. It’s a lot of work for Vince to keep all this synced up but I think it helps to create something special.

745.
746.
747.
748.
06. What’s next on your horizon?
We leave for Dubai where we do three shows for MUTEK festival. Then we’ll head over to Tbilisi for a show, and then back to Berlin at Club der Visionaere. Then back to Montreal to finish mixing a bunch of releases. We’ll also have to start preparing our new show for MUTEK Montreal.

869.
870.
871.
872.
Jon Hopkins will release a new album in August.

873.
874.
875.
876.
By turns “devotional, empowering, and nurturing,” we’re told, RITUAL is a 41-minute single piece of music unfolding over eight chapters. It is a culmination of themes explored throughout Hopkins’ 22-year career, and acts as the “kinetic counterpart” to 2021’s Music For Psychedelic Therapy, an album made to accompany Hopkins’ guided psychedelic trips.

877.
878.
879.
880.
The album features long-term collaborators Vylana, 7RAYS, Ishq, Clark, Emma Smith, Daisy Vatalaro, and Cherif Hashizume, and it came together within the second half of 2023. Though initial seeds were sown in 2022, when Hopkins was commissioned to compose for Dreamachine, an immersive experience in London created by Collective Act, in collaboration with a team of artists, scientists, and philosophers.

881.
882.
883.
884.
Sonically, the release is both “emotionally and sonically heavy,” we’re told, whilst retaining a warm, live feel, “where the juxtaposition between softness and intensity forms the core of the whole.”

885.
886.
887.
888.
Ahead of the album, Hopkins made the following statement.

889.
890.
891.
892.
“I have no idea what I’m doing when I’m composing. I don’t know where it’s coming from, and I don’t know where it’s going, nor does it seem to matter. I just know when it is finished. So all I can really do is feel my way to the end, then try and retrospectively analyze what might be going on, and try and figure out what its purpose is. What is clear is that this one has the structure of a Ritual. I know what that Ritual is for me, but it will be something different for you. It feels important not to be prescriptive about what this Ritual actually is.

893.
894.
895.
896.
“It feels like a tool, maybe even a machine, for opening portals within your inner world, for unlocking things that are hidden and buried. Things that are held in place by the tension in your body. It doesn’t feel like ‘an album’ therefore—more a process to go through, something that works on you. At the same time, it feels like it tells a story. Maybe it’s the story of a process I’m going through, and one that we are all going through. Maybe it’s also the story of creation, destruction, and transcendence. Maybe it’s the story of the archetypal hero’s journey—the journey of forgetting and remembering.

897.
898.
899.
900.
“Ultimately though, all I have to say about it is said by the sound.“

901.
902.
903.
904.
RITUAL will be premiered in spatial audio at London’s ICA on May 12. Pre-ordering the album will give pre-sale access for tickets. A further listening event will take place at Glastonbury Festival on their “Ambient” stage.

905.
906.
907.
908.
Ahead of the album, Hopkins has shared a video for “part v – evocation,” directed by Dave Bullivant and starring aerial rope performer Bryony Louise Fowler.

909.
910.
911.
912.
The track is defined by deep, hypnotic drums and a long build to epiphanic light. It’s designed to give listeners “a window into the full experience.”

913.
914.
915.
916.
Tracklisting

01. part i – altar
02. part ii – palace / illusion
03. part iii – transcend / lament
04. part iv – the veil
05. part v – evocation
06. part vi – solar goddess return
07. part vii – dissolution
08. part viii – nothing is lost

917.
918.
919.
920.
RITUAL LP is scheduled for August 30 release on Domino. Meanwhile, you can stream “part v – evocation” in full below and pre-order here.
