91.
It's only natural that CNN loves live coverage of the White House correspondents' dinner, where the anti-Trump media celebrate themselves for how essential they are to preserving democracy and how valiantly they warn Americans that Donald Trump is democracy's antonym.

 93.
President Joe Biden's speech made some jokes about his age. It's that safe spot where all the late-night comedians go. But he also showed nastiness: "Yes, age is an issue. I'm a grown man running against a 6-year-old." They loved that joke on CNN.

 94.
Like last year, Biden thought it was funny to insist he doesn't have to grant access to reporters because "I do interviews with strong independent journalists who millions of people actually listen to, like Howard Stern." Instead, he lectured them about how Trump "has made no secret of his attack on our democracy," and the "free press" needs to make sure the voters have "the information they need to make an informed decision."

 95.
Biden thinks a pro-Biden media needs to deliver: "I'm sincerely not asking you to take sides but asking you to rise up to the seriousness of the moment." He clearly means the media need to underline Trump needs to lose.

 96.
Biden ripped into Trump, ranting about Jan. 6 and spewing misinformation about Trump's attention-grabbing way of speaking. "He said he wants to be a dictator on Day 1 ... he promised a bloodbath when he loses again."

 97.
If you're a low-information voter, you wouldn't know Trump joked with Sean Hannity about being a dictator for one day, and he said our economy would be a "bloodbath" if Biden is reelected. You can scold Trump for his rhetorical red meat. But that doesn't mean journalists and presidents should mischaracterize what he says.

 98.
This is not how these dinners used to work. Twenty years ago at this dinner, when President George W. Bush was lining up against Sen. John Kerry, Bush didn't say one negative word about his opponent or one negative word about the opposing party. He made gentle jokes about the press. He didn't urge the networks to defeat Kerry at the anchor desk. He talked about heroic reporters in war zones, and heroic soldiers.

 99.
That's not how it unfolded in 2024. The hired comedian, "Saturday Night Live" fake-news anchor Colin Jost, concluded his comedy routine by remembering his late grandfather, a Staten Island firefighter, who voted for Biden in 2020.

 100.
"He voted for you, and the reason that he voted for you is because you're a decent man. My grandpa voted for decency, and decency is why we're all here tonight. Decency is how we're able to be here tonight, Decency is how we're able to make jokes about each other, and one of us doesn't go to prison after." He then repeated: "So, Mr. President, I thank you for your decency on behalf of my grandfather."

 101.
Jost said this after Biden said his opponent was a 6-year-old who would spur a bloodbath if he loses. Jost said this after he mocked Trump as "currently spending his days farting himself awake during a porn star hush money trial," and the courtroom sketch artist makes Trump look like "the Grinch had sex with the Lorax."

 102.
At least CNN allowed their contributor Scott Jennings to sum up the evening: "We had Biden speak tonight, and then we had a Biden surrogate effectively speak tonight." It's no wonder CNN wanted to air the whole thing live.

 122.

My disdain for the Left began at a young age. From as early as I can recall, I hated evil, and I therefore always hated communism. When I realized the Left either supported communism or, at the very least, opposed anti-communism, I understood that leftism was a force for evil. Liberals and conservatives hated communism; leftists did not.

 123.
As liberals began their leftward drift in the 1960s – to cite one example, virtually all liberal media condemned President Ronald Reagan's description of the Soviet Union as "an evil empire" – I came to regard conservatism as a moral refuge in a dark world. In the conservative moral universe, America was essentially a force for good; communism was evil; liberty, most especially free speech, was a supreme value; Western civilization was a morally superior civilization; the Judeo-Christian value system was the moral bedrock of the West; and Islamic violence – as exemplified by al-Qaeda, the Islamic State, Boko Haram, the Taliban, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Iranian régime – was the great religious threat of our time.

 124.
Get the hottest, most important news stories on the internet – delivered FREE to your inbox as soon as they break! Take just 30 seconds and sign up for WND's Email News Alerts!

 125.
That conservative moral universe is in decline. Some leading figures on the Right are as confused as the Left on some of the most important moral issues. This was made manifest last week when Tucker Carlson told Joe Rogan that any person who defends the dropping of the atomic bombs over Japan is evil.

 126.
Here is what he said: "People on my side ... on the Right, you know, have spent 80 years defending dropping nuclear weapons on civilians. Like, are you joking? That's just like prima facie evil. ... It's wrong to drop nuclear weapons on people. And if you find yourself arguing that it's a good thing to drop nuclear weapons on people, then you are evil. Like, it's not a tough one. It's not a hard call for me. So, with that in mind, like, why would you want nuclear weapons? It's, like, just a mindless, childish sort of intellectual exercise to justify – like, 'Oh, no, it's really good because somebody else will get it.' How about 'no'? How about, like, spending all of your effort to prevent this from happening? Would you kill baby Hitler, you know, famously?"

 127.
Given that nearly every liberal and conservative thinker over the past 80 years has defended the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, in Tucker's view, nearly every conservative and liberal thinker of the last 80 years was or is evil.

 128.
For those 80 years, the charge that America was evil for having dropped those bombs on Japan has been associated almost exclusively with the Left.

 129.
Now, an increasing number of America-first conservatives have adopted the position identified for three generations with the America-hating Left.

 130.
In another column, I will attempt to explain this right-wing moral decline. But here I will confine myself to a brief moral defense of President Harry Truman's decision to drop the atom bombs on Japan.

 131.
1. The responsibility for the war between Japan and the United States lay with Japan. Every Japanese death was the result of the fascist Japanese government's decision to attack the U.S., China, Korea, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Burma, Thailand and the Philippines. If the Japanese military regime had never attacked those countries, not one Japanese would have been killed.

 132.
2. The Japanese were as cruel and sadistic as the Nazis. Because the average American knows little about history, few Americans know how vile the Japanese were during World War II. The Japanese performed grotesque medical experiments on fully conscious Chinese civilians just as Nazi doctors did on concentration camp inmates. The Japanese used Korean and Filipino women as sex slaves to be regularly gang raped by Japanese soldiers. The Japanese tortured and murdered American, Australian and other prisoners of war.

 133.
3. Possibly over 100,000 Japanese civilians were killed on the night of March 9-10, 1945, in one of the American bombing raids over Tokyo, far more than were killed in the Nagasaki atom bombing. American aerial bombing over Japanese cities between 1942 and 1945 killed between 241,000 and 900,000 Japanese, and such bombing would have continued had the atom bombs not ended the war. Apparently, however, killing far fewer people with an atom bomb is more immoral than killing far more people with conventional bombs.

 134.
4. Invasion was not the more moral option. In the words of Roman Catholic priest and University of Notre Dame professor of history Father Wilson Miscamble, "Truman sought to bomb Hiroshima and Nagasaki, two major military/industrial targets, to avoid an invasion of Japan, which Truman knew would mean, in his words, 'an Okinawa from one end of Japan to the other.' His assumptions were entirely legitimate."

 135.
5. More from Professor Miscamble:

 136.
"Japanese military and civilian losses had reached approximately three million and there seemed no end in sight. Despite all this, however, Japan's leaders and especially its military clung fiercely to notions of Ketsu-Go ('decisive battle'). In fact, the Japanese government had mobilized a large part of the population into a national militia which would be deployed to defend the home islands.

 137.
"Confirming the Japanese determination to fight on is the fact that even after the use of atomic bombs against both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, the Japanese military still wanted to pursue that desperate option. ... It took the unprecedented intervention of a Japanese emperor to break the impasse in the Japanese government and finally order surrender. It was only the dropping of the atom bombs that allowed the emperor and the so-called peace faction in the Japanese government to negotiate an end to the war.

 138.
"Japanese losses would have been far greater without the bombs. And the overall casualties would also have included thousands of Allied prisoners of war whom the Japanese planned to execute in case of invasion."

 139.
Miscamble concludes: "The judgment of history is clear and unambiguous: the atomic bombs shortened the war, averted the need for a land invasion, saved countless more lives on both sides of the blood-soaked conflict than they cost, and ended the Japanese brutalization of the conquered peoples of Asia."

 140.
These quotes are taken from Fr. Miscamble's PragerU video, "Was it Wrong to Drop the Atom Bomb on Japan?" made 10 years ago.

 141.
In Tucker's view, Fr. Miscamble is just another evil man, as is one of the most morality-driven conservatives of our time, Victor Davis Hanson, who has written: "To Americans and most of the world 75 years ago, each day in early August 1945 that the Japanese war machine continued its work meant that thousands of Asian civilians and Allied soldiers would die. In the terrible arithmetic of World War II, the idea that such a nightmare might end in a day or two was seen as saving millions of lives rather than gratuitously incinerating tens of thousands."

 142.
What explains the moral confusion of some on this New Right is worthy of another column. But I, for one, have found a silver lining: clarity about a heretofore puzzling development. The inability of many America-first intellectuals, podcasters and their followers to call Hamas evil and morally defend Israel is not necessarily a function of antisemitism. It is a function of a broken moral compass.

 162.

President Joe Biden says, "I know how to make government work!" You'd think he'd know. He's worked in government for 51 years.

 163.
But the truth is, no one can make government work. Biden hasn't.

 164.
Look at the chaos at the border, our military's botched withdrawal from Afghanistan, the rising cost of living, our unsustainable record-high debt ...

 165.
In my new video, economist Ed Stringham argues that no government can ever work well, because "even the best person can't implement change. ... The massive bureaucracy gets bigger and slower."

 166.
Get the hottest, most important news stories on the internet – delivered FREE to your inbox as soon as they break! Take just 30 seconds and sign up for WND's Email News Alerts!

 167.
I learned that as a consumer reporter watching bureaucrats regulate business. Their rules usually made life worse for consumers.

 168.
Yet politicians want government to do more!

 169.
Remember the unveiling of Obamacare's website? Millions tried to sign up. The first day, only six got it to work. Vice President Joe Biden made excuses: "Neither (Obama) and I are technology geeks."

 170.
Stringham points out, "If they can't design a basic simple website, how are they going to manage half the economy?"

 171.
While bureaucrats struggled with the Obamacare site, the private sector successfully created Uber and Lyft, platforms like iCloud, apps like Waze, smartwatches, etc.

 172.
The private sector creates things that work because it has. If businesses don't serve customers well, they go out of business.

 173.
But government is a monopoly. It never goes out of business. With no competition, there's less pressure to improve.

 174.
Often good people join government. Some work as hard as workers in the private sector. But not for long. Because the bureaucracy's incentives kill initiative.

 175.
If a government worker works hard, he might get a small raise. But he sits near others who earn the same pay and, thanks to archaic civil service rules, are unlikely to get fired even if they're late, lazy or stupid.

 176.
Over time, that's demoralizing. Eventually government workers conclude, "Why try?"

 177.
In the private sector, workers must strive to make things better. If they don't, competitors will, and you might lose your job. Governments never go out of business.

 178.
"Companies can only stay in business if they always keep their customer happy," Stringham points out. "Competition pushes us to be better. Government has no competition."

 179.
I push back. "Politicians say, 'Voters can vote us out.'"

 180.
"With a free market," Stringham replies, "The consumer votes every single day with the dollar. Under politics, we have to wait four years."

 181.
It's another reason why, over time, government never works as well as the private sector. Year after year, the Pentagon fails audits. If a private company repeatedly does that, they get shut down. But government never gets shut down.

 182.
A Pentagon spokeswoman makes excuses: "We're working on improving our process. We certainly are learning each time."

 183.
They don't learn much. They still fail audits.

 184.
"It's like we're living in Groundhog Day," Stringham jokes.

 185.
When Covid hit, politicians handed out almost $2 trillion in "rescue" funds. The Government Accountability Office says more than $100 billion were stolen.

 186.
"One woman bought a Bentley," laughs Stringham. "A father and son bought a luxury home."

 187.
At least Biden noticed the fraud. He announced, "We're going to make you pay back what you stole!

 188.
No. They will not. Biden's Fraud Enforcement Task Force has recovered only 1% of what was stolen.

 189.
Even without fraud, government makes money vanish. I've reported on my town's $2 million toilet in a park. When I confronted the parks commissioner, he said, "$2 million was a bargain! Today it would cost $3 million."

 190.
That's government work.

 191.
More recently, Biden proudly announced that government would create "500,000 (EV) charging stations."

 192.
After two years, they've built ... seven. Not 7,000. Just seven. Over the same time, greedy, profit-seeking Amazon built 17,000.

 193.
"Privatize!" says Stringham. "Whenever we think something's important, question whether government should do it."

 194.
In Britain, government-owned Jaguar lost money year after year. Only when Britain sold the company to private investors did Jaguar start turning a profit selling cars people actually like. When Sweden sold Absolut Vodka, the company increased its profits sixfold.

 195.
It's ridiculous for Biden to say, "I know how to make government work." No one does.

 196.
Next week, this column takes on Donald Trump's promise: "We'll drain the Washington swamp!"

 224.
The Department of Energy (DOE) finalized regulations Tuesday for a popular appliance that will push the market toward adopting heat pump technology.

 225.
The DOE’s final energy efficiency regulations for water heaters will apply to common electrical water heaters and significantly increase the share of those models that use heat pumps, according to the agency. The DOE has spearheaded the Biden administration’s efforts to push rules and regulations targeting appliances ranging from pool pump motors and lightbulbs to furnaces and portable generators.

 227.
“Almost every U.S. household has a water heater, and for too long outdated energy efficiency standards have led to higher utility bills for families,” Secretary of Energy Jennifer Granholm said in a statement about the new rules. “The Biden-Harris Administration is continuing to put American consumers first with new, effective rules—supported by industry—that save both energy and money.”

 233.
The new standards will lead to more than 50% of all newly-manufactured electric water heaters to use heat pump technology, a massive increase from the 3% seen in the market today, according to the DOE. Compliance with the new rules will be required starting in 2029.

 234.
The DOE’s new rules will require a “moderate” increase in the efficiency of gas-fired water heaters, the agency said. The DOE is still working on its efficiency standards for gas-powered water heaters, which are not included in Tuesday’s rulemaking action.

 235.
The agency says that the regulations will save Americans a combined $124 billion on energy bills over the next three decades and reduce emissions by an equivalent amount to the emissions generated by 43 million homes in one year. While the DOE considers models with heat pumps to be an important part of decarbonizing America’s building stock, those particular models tend to cost about $1,000 more up front than some alternatives and do not work as well in cold climates, according to Forbes.

 236.
The DOE did not respond immediately to a request for comment.

 325.

The “occupying thing," as one young, nice, “woke" professor – a genuine expert in her field – called it, is happening on her campus, though they had rather wished that it wouldn't. The tents and the noise and the crowds interfere with the normal business of the university – learning and advancing knowledge. In many places, Jewish students feel threatened. So far, things are apparently peaceful. But it may take only a few well-trained agitators to lead to bloodshed.

 326.
To understand what the movement is, consider what it is not. It is not a grassroots uprising by young people of conscience who care deeply about Palestinians – or understand what is happening in the Middle East. The identical scarves, chants, signs, and organization did not arise by spontaneous generation on dozens of campuses.

 328.
The core group is a rent-a-mob. At three colleges, the protests are being encouraged by paid radicals who are “fellows" of a Soros-funded group, the U.S. Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR), which provides up to $7,800 for its community-based and between $2,880 and $3,660 for its campus-based “fellows" in return for spending eight hours a week organizing “campaigns led by Palestinian organizations." All of the funding groups, including the Muslim Brotherhood and Qatar, supported and justified the Hamas atrocities of Oct. 7, and many are linked to designated Palestinian terror organizations.

 329.
These NGO “charities" are not feeding starving people in Gaza, but affluent Americans who probably never had to miss a meal. If the universities agree to the demands to divest from Israel, nobody in Gaza will be better off.

 330.
You may think that the war in the Middle East is not our war. But the campus occupations ARE our war, whether you agree with the protesters or not. Remember that the issue is never the issue. The issue is the revolution.

 331.
Today these young people are full of pro-Hamas, anti-Israel propaganda. This is the Current Thing. Tomorrow, the banners may be different. The common denominator is the same. Since childhood, most students have been indoctrinated with Marxist propaganda. It's the oppressed versus the oppressors. Today, the featured oppressed group is Palestinians. This time the “oppressors" category has been expanded beyond the “usual suspects" of conservative American businesses and “right-wing," non-woke Americans into entities and people that used to be celebrated allies of the protesters. This new wave of protests also represents the internal conflict within the Left, between young woke Marxists (including many Jews) against the older more moderate woke Left. The Zionist Jews are fighting pro-Palestinian cultural (secular) Marxist Jews: divide and conquer. The protests have nothing to do with “free speech" since the people organizing and participating in those protests hate free speech, as shown in their protests against allowing a speaker they disagree with to address a meeting. A reasoned debate about what American policy should be to bring peace is unthinkable.

 332.
What is the “or else" if the protesters don't get what they demand?

 333.
Erik Baker in the Boston Review quotes a 1964 speech by a student activist at the University of California at Berkeley:

 334.
“There's a time when the operation of the (capitalist/Imperialist) machine becomes so odious – makes you so sick at heart – that you can't take part (…) and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop. And you've got to indicate to the people who run it, to the people who own it, that unless you're free, the machine will be prevented from working at all."

 335.
And what if they do get what they demand – today? It's only a first step. “We must have a revolution so we can have a socialist reconstruction of the United States of America," said rally speaker Sean Blackmon, member of the Party for Socialism and Liberation, at an encampment at George Washington University.

 336.
The protesters may be called “snowflakes." But young brainwashed “snowflakes" in large groups can be as lethal as anything. The Maoist Red Guards murdered millions in China during the Cultural Revolution and tortured and killed millions in Cambodia under the Khmer Rouge regime. Jews would be killed, of course. But so would everyone else representing Mao's Four Olds: old ideas, customs, culture, and habits of mind. Paintings, books, furniture, and monuments were also destroyed.

 337.
The privileged faculty do not expect to be among the casualties, because they are supporting the “oppressed." Nor do they expect to be hauling manure on a collective farm, like many Chinese surgeons were. They expect to be the new elite. They need to read their history.

 338.
The virtue-signaling protesters are not going to bring in an era of peace, freedom, and prosperity for Palestinians. That is neither the purpose nor a possible outcome of their tactics. The idea is to crush the United States of America, and the freedom and prosperity its system brought to the world.

 339.
If you are not a Jew, do not be complacent. Republicans and cis-gendered Christians may be next, but anyone out of favor with the Revolution will be on the list.
