  53. <p><br />In the latest edition of his <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/newsletters/2024-05-19/what-is-apple-doing-in-ai-summaries-cloud-and-on-device-llms-openai-deal-lwdj5pkz?srnd=undefined" target="_blank" rel="noopener">&#8220;Power On&#8221; newsletter</a>, Gurman said that Apple&#8217;s current schedule does not include the launch of new ‌Mac Studio‌ and ‌Mac Pro‌ models until the middle of next year. Apple last updated the ‌Mac Studio‌ and ‌Mac Pro‌ with M2-series chips at WWDC in 2023, meaning that they could go around 24 months without an update, even though the <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/roundup/ipad-pro/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">iPad Pro</a> now contains the M4 chip.</p>

The new model will apparently feature an upgraded chip and enhanced location tracking capabilities. </p>

  335. <p><strong>The Kiss of Shame</strong> is a fantastic <strong>analog tape degradation plugin</strong> originally developed ten years ago by Eros Marcello and friends. At the time, however, it was never finished or released. Developer Matthijs Hollemans has dug up the code as part of his “plugin archeology project”, updated it to JUCE 7, and got The Kiss of Shame running again on current systems.</p>
  336. <p>According to the developers, TKOS was one of the first tape emulations to realistically model the instability of the magnetic particles in the tape. It also emulates things like lubricant loss, deformation, and even reel expansion and contraction. With this level of detail, it’s great for bringing your tracks to life through the subtle inconsistencies of slightly degraded analog tape.</p>

  524. <p>The Dell G16 7630 is unashamedly a laptop for gamers that like a large space to play on. Its generous dimensions measure 14.05 x 11.37 x 1.01 inches, so it has a desktop replacement feel to it.</p>
  525. <p>The chassis features an aluminum cover that makes it sturdier than if it were just made of plastic, but I did notice a bit of give there compared to laptops with solid CNC-milled aluminum chassis. The lid is similar, in that it will flex with firm pressure, but not with moderate pressure.</p>
  526. <p>The display is a sight to behold. It may be only 16 inches on the diagonal, but its16:10 aspect ratio means you benefit from extra vertical space than in the laptop’s forbears. It gives the illusion you’re using an even larger laptop. That’s helped along by very thin left and right bezels that make every inch of screen space a prize to savor.</p>

  532. <p>The top and bottom bezels are a lot thicker than the sides, especially the bottom bezel which sits atop a tall hinge. That’s a fact I was very happy for, since it meant I could look almost straight on at the screen without having to crane my neck downwards.</p>
  533. <p>As to styling, the Dell G16 7630 eschews gamer-centric touches like RGB logos, or flashy Tron lights like the kind you’ll find in Alienware laptops, in favor of a simple Dell logo on the lid instead. I wasn’t unhappy about that since it meant the G16 7630 was one of those rare gaming laptops I could use in the office without anyone blinking an eye.</p>
  534. <p>At least that was the case when the laptop was fully charged. When it was time to charge it, the huge 330W power brick was kind of a giveaway — it’s probably the chunkiest and biggest charging brick I’ve seen.</p>
  535. <p>My review unit was a smart Nightshade Black color, which has a kind of charcoal hue. It also blended in nicely with my office environment.</p>

  537. <p>The keyboard’s single-zone RGB backlighting was a brilliant blue color on startup, which was quite mesmerizing to see. The keyboard is full-sized and has a useful key layout for gamers, including full-sized arrow keys and a collection of media shortcuts down the right-hand side.</p>

  563. <p>The laptop also sports a Game Shift Key that lets you change and maximize the laptop’s fan speeds for heavy tasks. The ADSF keys are outlined by a white border, which gives the keyboard the battle station look many gamers like.</p>
  564. <p>Unsurprisingly for a laptop this size, the keys feel a bit mushy, but they fire off rapidly and with a satisfying low audible click. They are also nicely sized for my medium sized fingers — spacious but not trampoline-sized.</p>
  565. <p>One hitch is the trackpad’s smallness. It plays second fiddle to the G16 7630’s keyboard and could do with an extra half inch in each direction. Its clicks are nevertheless fast, and the trackpad tracks well, so it’s not a total loss.</p>
  566. <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="dell-g16-7630-connectivity-and-audio">Dell G16 7630: Connectivity and audio</h3>
  567. <p>A useful assortment of ports line the G16 7630’s flanks, allowing me to plug in my normal array of peripherals. There’s a Thunderbolt 4 port for transferring my essential game files at a quick speed of up to 40Gbps and an ethernet port for when I want the lowest latency in games.</p>
  568. <p>The laptop’s Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth functionality are also snappy — although, Wi-Fi 6 is rapidly becoming an older standard now, with laptops like the <a href="https://www.pcworld.com/article/2280125/razer-blade-16-review-2.html" data-type="link" data-id="https://www.pcworld.com/article/2280125/razer-blade-16-review-2.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">2024 Razer Blade 16</a> now sporting the updated Wi-Fi 7 standard.</p>
  569. <p>The Dell G16 7630 is a large laptop and it projects sound really well in a large room. The laptop’s two speakers are well tuned for mid-tones, so you get a nice neutral sound in games. I only noticed slight vibrations at higher volumes. Dolby Atmos support gives the audio an appealing immersive quality.</p>
  570. <h3 class="wp-block-heading" id="dell-g16-7630-display-and-webcam">Dell G16 7630: Display and webcam</h3>
  571. <p>I made a promise to myself when the 2024 Razer Blade 16 came out that I wouldn’t play games in 2650x1600p with anything less than a 240Hz refresh rate. Thankfully my Dell G16 7630 came with the same refresh rate and resolution combination, which made for really fast and smooth game action.</p>
  572. <p>Indeed, playing games like <em>Battlefield I</em> and <em>Cyberpunk 2077</em> was a real pleasure — my frame rates were high enough to stay competitive with the best players. The screen resolution was also very detailed, but I’ve seen richer colors on OLED displays. Still, the Dell G16 7630’s 100 percent DCI-P3 color display produces a good enough picture to look bright and texture-rich.</p>
  573. <p>The laptop’s brightness was also never an issue. I measured a peak brightness of 497 nits, which I used to my advantage to keep the display visible in very bright rooms of my house.</p>
  574. <p>The 720p webcam impressed me less than the display. It’s adequate for chats and meetings, but some images came out looking a little orange at times.</p>
  575. <p>A single microphone array also didn’t do my voice much justice in game chats. The sound lost some detail at different moments, which made me sound a little robotic.</p>

  605. <p>My review laptop clocked a score of 10,658 in this test, which was quite decent; to be honest, though, there are now a bunch of laptops with 14th-generation Intel CPUs that will muscle out a score like this. But for an Intel 13th-generation CPU, the i9-13900HX is well up to the task of running your most demanding games.</p>
  606. <p>With plenty of thermal headroom in the hefty chassis, the laptop’s CPU also performed admirably in a bespoke test that uses the free HandBrake utility. The CPU managed to keep rising thermals at bay when tasked with encoding a 30GB MKV file to the MP4 format. It took just 828 seconds to finish.</p>

  712. <p>The benchmarks reinforce what we already know about the RTX 4070 GPU, too — it’s a great video card that provides performance like Nvidia’s top-tier RTX 3080 GPUs.</p>
  713. <p>What’s more, if that last score is any indication, this laptop offers a few performance surprises against laptops with RTX 40 series GPUs too. </p>

  715. <p>To test the laptop’s battery life, I started by charging the review unit up to 100 percent. The volume was set to 50 percent and a cheap pair of headphones was plugged in to control sound.</p>

  742. <p>The G16 7630’s 84WHr battery ran for 5 hours and 35 mins. That’s the length of time you can expect a lightweight task like running a video to last on this laptop. For gaming, which uses more power, you can expect about half that time — so about 3 hours of battery life.</p>
  743. <p>That’s not great, but the laptop charges quickly when you plug it in. The only problem is the charging brick is so big you won’t want to take it with you when you leave your house.</p>

  745. <p>The Dell G16 7630 is a seriously big laptop that really fills a niche market. For me that feels like gamers looking for a desktop replacement but who don’t want to shell out on a more expensive 18-inch gaming laptop.</p>
  746. <p>There’s a solid argument why you’d want that, too. The configuration I reviewed costs just $1,899, which is a lot cheaper than say, the Razer Blade 18, which has a starting price of $2,599. That makes it a particularly good buy if you can get by without a lot of portability.</p>

While buying new will always give you more protections, more rights, and likely a better overall product, buying a used laptop can be a great way to make some big savings, get a better laptop than you could otherwise afford, and help cut back on e-waste.</p>

A swollen battery or one that has received any kind of obvious physical damage has the potential to leak harmful gasses, catch fire, or even explode. If you can check the battery itself before buying by prying open the lpatop, do so, and if the is any suggestion that the battery is damaged, steer well clear.</p>

  835. <p>Displays can degrade over time, too, so if the laptop is being resold quickly after its original sale, or if it’s been used a lot over a year or more, it’s important to check whether the display looks as good as it should. That means checking for individual pixels that don’t work correctly and bands of color running down the screen. These can sometimes be fixed, but it’s better to avoid them altogether if you can.</p>
  836. <p>If the laptop has an OLED panel, you should make sure there isn’t any obvious burn-in, too. This can appear as a ghostly effect on the screen, no matter what you’re watching, and there aren’t many solutions for it.</p>

  838. <p>One of the best ways to protect yourself against problematic purchases is ensuring whatever used laptop you buy has some form of guarantee. If there’s a warranty left, that’s doubly good. If if the seller has it along with all the original documentation (including Windows key and purchase receipt), it can make life a lot easier for you when it comes to getting support from the manufacturer of the used laptop.</p>

But the last thing you want to do is start inputting your personal information into a laptop that can steal it.</p>

  945. <p id="speakable-summary" class="wp-block-paragraph">A new crop of early-stage startups — along with some recent VC investments — illustrates a niche emerging in the autonomous vehicle technology sector. Unlike the companies bringing robotaxis to city streets, these startups are taking their tech off-road. </p>
  946. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Two recent entrants — Seattle-based <a href="https://www.overland.ai/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Overland AI</a> and New Brunswick-based <a href="https://www.potentialmotors.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Potential</a> — are poised to get a first-mover advantage on this segment of autonomy. </p>
  947. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">While these startups are applying their tech in different ways, Overland AI and Potential do share some common off-road ground. Founders of each startup believe they’ve cracked the code to one of the more challenging applications of automated driving by building software that doesn’t rely on some of the main crutches of testing and deployment — such as detailed maps, large swaths of training data and the ability to fall back on remote assistance. </p>
  948. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The U.S. Department of Defense and venture capital investors are taking notice. </p>
  949. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overland AI, which is developing a self-driving system designed for military operations like reconnaissance, surveillance and delivering electronic warfare packages, was awarded in April up to<a href="https://finance.yahoo.com/news/overland-ai-awarded-18-6-193800079.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener"> $18.6 million</a> from the U.S. Army’s Defense Innovation Unit. The funds will be used to build a prototype autonomous software stack for its Robotic Combat Vehicle (RCV) program over the next two years. </p>
  950. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The startup, which was founded in 2022, raised this week a $10 million seed round led by Point72 Ventures. The funds will be used to expand Overland’s team and continue developing OverDrive, the company’s autonomy stack, according to CEO and founder Byron Boots. </p>
  951. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Meanwhile, Potential, which is making advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) that allows ATVs, underground mining vehicles and passenger cars to handle off-road environments, has raised a $2 million CAD (~$1.5 million USD) extension to its seed round led by Brightspark Ventures, a Canadian early-stage VC. That brings Potential’s total funding to $8.5 million CAD (~$6.2 million USD). The startup has spent the last six years developing its technology and is now doing several pilot projects across power sports, motorcycles and automotive. </p>
  952. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-off-road-opportunity"><strong>Off-road opportunity</strong></h2>
  953. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Potential and Overland AI aren’t the only companies trying to apply autonomous vehicle technology to areas outside of public streets. The high-cost pursuit of commercial robotaxi and self-driving truck operations has thwarted dozens of startups over the past several years. As those shut down, a new batch of startups such as Polymath Robotics, Forterra, Pronto.ai, Bear Robotics and Outrider have emerged with more grounded ambitions: applying AV tech to warehouses, mining, industrial and off-road environments. </p>
  954. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We are absolutely deploying capital in off-road autonomy,” Alexei Andreev, managing director at Autotech Ventures, told TechCrunch. “Actually, if anything, we are staying away from highway autonomy and completely doubled down on off-road autonomy.”</p>
  955. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most of the off-road companies that Autotech Ventures is investing in today are in the agricultural and construction sectors — products like autonomous mining vehicles, forklifts and tractors. Andreev says for these sectors, it’s about addressing the labor shortage while increasing productivity and making farms and construction areas safer. </p>
  956. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“And if you remove people, you immediately get a reduction in your insurance premiums. So the ROI for those vertical applications is now and it’s significant,” said Andreev. </p>
  957. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Another upshot: Off-road autonomy has found a friend in defense. </p>
  958. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-overland-ai-from-darpa-to-seed-funding"><strong>Overland AI: From DARPA to seed funding</strong></h2>

  960. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">When it comes to automating off-road driving, the U.S. Army can be a great customer. After all, autonomous vehicles started as a DARPA project, says Jeff Peters, a partner at Ibex Investors. DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) is a U.S. Department of Defense agency focused on advancing technology for military use. </p>
  961. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The hype around AV moved a lot of the industry toward bigger potential commercial applications, but DoD projects have persisted,” Peters told TechCrunch over email, noting that autonomous mining startup SafeAI and autonomous trucking startup <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2022/12/06/kodiak-robotics-wins-50m-to-help-us-army-build-avs-for-recon-surveillance/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Kodiak Robotics</a> have also pursued defense grants. “I think AV companies (those still around) will chase DoD projects because it offers large, non-dilutive funding in the interim prior to commercial operations.” </p>
  962. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overland AI is the latest byproduct of the DARPA program. Boots, a professor of machine learning at the University of Washington and founder of the Robot Learning Laboratory at the university’s school of computer science and engineering, has a long history of collaborating with the U.S. Army Research Lab and DARPA. </p>
  963. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overland was spun out from Boots’ research and team involved in DARPA’s RACER (Robotic Autonomy in Complex Environments with Resiliency) program, the goal of which is to develop self-driving vehicles that can handle tough terrain. </p>
  964. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The program is still ongoing. Overland, which is stacked with deep tech veterans from Google, Nvidia, Apple, Waymo, Aurora, Embark and Argo as well as software engineers who’ve worked on mission-critical solutions at SpaceX, RTX and the U.S. Army, was recently selected to continue on to the second phase.</p>
  965. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The high-level idea is that currently just about every ground vehicle that the military uses has a person inside of it,” Boots told TechCrunch in a video interview. “And you can imagine if you can just pull the person out of the vehicle, that confers safety and tactical advantages.”</p>
  966. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">To pull the person out means vehicles must autonomously navigate complex off-road terrain using only onboard sensors (mainly cameras, according to Boots) and compute, without relying on maps, GPS or remote human operators. That means Overland’s software has to understand the geometry of the ground — including things like vegetation and mud — every step of the way, and how that affects vehicle dynamics. </p>
  967. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The terrain gets a vote on how the vehicle moves,” said Boots. </p>
  968. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Overland’s tech “basically takes in the sensor data and builds a terrain representation as it goes,” Boots explained. Then the vehicle uses that digital representation “plus the goal that it’s trying to get to, which could be several kilometers away, to try to find a route through the terrain towards that goal.”</p>
  969. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Part of the benefit of having an autonomous system is that when the system is tasked, if you lose a communication link to that ground vehicle, it will continue to move towards its goal and try to complete the task until the communication link is reestablished,” said Boots. </p>
  970. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Most on-road driving today relies on that telecommunications link to remote assistance, in part because the risk to other road users is higher. That’s why you’ll see <a href="https://techcrunch.com/2024/04/17/seven-waymo-robotaxis-block-traffic-to-san-francisco-freeway-on-ramp/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Waymo</a> and Cruise robotaxis bricked up on the streets of San Francisco, waiting for a remote operator to give them a nudge after they stopped driving to meet a minimum safety requirement.</p>
  971. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Military ground systems often need to function in unstructured, dynamic terrain. We believe self-driving technology built for well-defined streets and enclosed lots will struggle there, and that it takes a very strong team to deliver operationally relevant ground autonomy in these environments,” Chris Morales, partner on the defense tech team at Point72 Ventures, told TechCrunch. </p>
  972. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-potential-s-potential-with-off-road-adas"><strong>Potential’s potential with off-road ADAS</strong></h2>

  974. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“How can you actually enable somebody who maybe isn’t the 100% expert driver, but somebody who wants to go off-roading and experience these more challenging conditions?” Sam Poirier, CEO at Potential, asked in a recent interview. </p>
  975. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Potential’s core platform, called Terrain Intelligence, uses computer vision to help vehicles see, interpret and prepare for complex terrain and changing surface conditions ahead. Terrain Intelligence can read data from a single camera, rather than relying on additional sensors like additional cameras, lidar and radar. </p>
  976. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">At the most basic level, Potential’s off-road ADAS alerts the driver to an impassable object up ahead or the need to switch to a better drive setting based on new terrain. </p>
  977. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“The second level is, can we instead actually help to automate the changes of what are typically driver-assisted settings?” said Poirier. “Most vehicles have two-wheel drive, four-wheel drive, sand mode, mud mode, things like that. Ultimately, at this stage, it’s up to the driver to switch between these…and the driver has to understand when to use these different modes.”</p>
  978. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Potential’s final level would involve using existing sensor data and fine-tuning those settings and pushing the limits of performance. </p>
  979. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">“There are things that the assistance tools can do that an individual driver — no matter how good your expertise — cannot do on their own,” said Scott Kunselman, an ex-Jeep chief engineer, auto industry veteran and advisor to Potential. “Stability controls are a good example because to enable stability control, you need independent brake control. The driver only has one brake pedal and actuates the whole brake system at once. Whereas stability control can individually actuate each wheel and that’s how you can produce, for example, the ability to offset yaw in a vehicle.”</p>
  980. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Yaw, by the way, is when a vehicle’s weight shifts from its center of gravity to the right or left, which can cause it to spin out or fishtail. </p>
  981. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Potential said it’s working with both Tier 1 suppliers and OEMs to license its software and integrate it directly into the vehicles. Andreev suggests Potential focus on business relations with Tier 1 suppliers rather than OEMs that are less likely to take a chance on a small startup.</p>
