46.
A Plymouth County Superior Court judge has issued a warrant for the arrest of Joseph Reddem, of Raynham, Mass. He was allegedly involved in a plot to cash in a stolen lottery ticket and attempted to extort money from his co-conspirator.

 47.
Reddem, 33, worked as a clerk at the store formerly known as Savas Liquors in Lakeville, Mass., along with Carly Nunes, 24, who pleaded guilty in February to stealing the ticket.

 48.
Oblivious Winner

 49.
In January 2023, Nunes was working the checkout when a customer entered to purchase a bag of potato chips and two Quick Picks for the Mega Millions draw. He grabbed his chips but left his lottery tickets in the tray at the checkout counter.

 50.
They were subsequently fished out by Nunes.

 51.
The victim later told investigators he briefly searched for his tickets when he got home, couldn’t find them, and gave the matter no more thought. He was oblivious to the fact that he hit the jackpot that night.

 52.
Two days later, Nunes, her boyfriend, and Jeddem turned up at the Massachusetts State Lottery HQ in Dorchester to cash the ticket.

 53.

 54.
Lottery officials were immediately suspicious because it was burned and partially torn. Their suspicions grew when they heard Reddem and Nunes arguing in the lobby.

 55.

 56.
Reddem, who had driven Nunes to Lottery HQ, appeared to be demanding half the jackpot for himself. Nunes said she would only pay him $200K.

 57.
A criminal investigation was launched, and security video from Savas Liquors showed that Nunes was not the real winner.

 58.
Real Winner Found

 59.
She was indicted on June 12, 2023, on multiple charges of larceny and fraud, and was arrested on a warrant two weeks later.

 60.
Nunes ultimately pleaded guilty to one of those charges – presentation of a false claim. She was sentenced to two years’ probation with the requirement that she continue treatment for substance abuse.

 61.
After a month of canvassing the area with screen-grab shots of the surveillance video, lottery officials were able to track down the real winner, Paul Little.

 62.
He said he wished Nunes the best and would “pray good things come her way.”

 63.
Reddem remains at large.

 85.
“I am firmly convinced that once the first customer buys that first ticket to ride a high-speed rail on American soil, there will be no going back,” US Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg said last month, after hammering a fake spike into a fake track to fake the project’s groundbreaking.

 86.
But will Brightline ever make it out of the station and into reality when half of its $12 billion budget is yet to be accounted for? And how can it possibly succeed when its passengers must still travel another 45 minutes to Los Angeles and if — as Brightline founder and chair Wes Edens estimated in March — the round-trip fare will be $400 per person?

 87.
Casino.org put these and other tough questions to Harry Teng, professor of civil and environmental engineering at UNLV and one of five commissioners of the independent Nevada High Speed Rail Authority.

 88.

Harry Teng is a professor of civil and environmental engineering at UNLV and one of five commissioners of the independent Nevada High Speed Rail Authority. (Image: Harry Teng)

 89.
Q: Talk of a Vegas-to-LA bullet train goes back to 2005, when Tony Marnell II, founder of the Rio, proposed XpressWest train to Victorville, Calif. Why did we have to wait more than 20 years to finally get it?

 90.
A: Before, we didn’t have the money. Now, we have this infrastructure bill passed two or three years ago. Also, Victorville is kind of nowhere. Now, they’re doing it the right way.

 91.
Q: President Biden’s infrastructure bill provides $3 billion in taxpayer dollars, along with access to $3.5 billion in tax-exempt bonds, for the project. But where is the other half of its $12 billion budget coming from?

 92.
A: They will raise private funds. Wes Edens is a multi-billionaire who co-owns the Milwaukee Bucks and Aston Villa Football Club, and he wants to bring a Major League Soccer team to Las Vegas. I don’t see this as a major issue.

 93.
Q: Are there any engineering issues with construction?

 94.
A: This is one thing that I’m really, really worried about. There are many challenges with running a train in the median of a freeway. The freeway has curves that are much sharper than is safe for high-speed trains. Cars can take them going 80, 90, or 100 mph. But the standard speed for high-speed rail is 180 mph. So they have to lower the speed as they approach those curves.

 95.
But I think the most dangerous thing will be strong wind — particularly if they run two trains linked together. That will require a stronger track to counter the wind force. We have a desert wind that sometimes comes from nowhere and is very unpredictable.

 96.
But in the summer, it’s really hot and that makes the rail softer and more vulnerable. All of that coming together is very challenging.

 97.
Q: So how can they solve that?

 98.
A: I think they’ll have to put sensors along the track so that they can monitor the wind and temperature, and those sensors will tell the train when it has to slow down. They cannot rely upon weather stations because they are usually far away from the track.

 99.
This is really critical if they are to avoid crashes.

 100.
Q: The maximum gradient for trains is 1.8%, or mountain grade. But the Cajon Pass has a gradient of 6% for 4 miles. Isn’t that a big problem, too?

 101.
A: No. Power is not a problem going at high speed. The train will be strong enough, with its momentum, to get up that hill.

 102.
Q: Is there anything that can stop this project at this point?

 103.
A: No, probably not.

 104.
Q: What about low demand once it opens? A ton of social-media commenters have already balked at paying more than the average airfare to arrive in Vegas without the convenience of a car. Brightline will cost about $1 per mile, yet the cost of driving a car is currently around 60 cents per mile, or $260 roundtrip. And, if you pile five people into your vehicle, the roundtrip cost plummets to $52 per person. That’s versus $400 on Brightline West!

 105.

Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg, left, and Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto drive pretend rail spikes into a pretend rail at a press conference announcing the groundbreaking on April 22. (Image: eenews.net)

 106.
A: I think that price could be a little high, but it’s all about how they play the game. If there are no people to ride on the train, they automatically have to lower the price. The market controls everything. They cannot play with the market.

 107.
But I think they can differentiate prices. Veterans can be free and seniors can pay less. They can offer four luxury cars for $400 a seat and then 16 cars of coach for $250. I also think they can charge more on Fridays and Sundays, when people will pay much more to get to and from Las Vegas in 2 hours when it could take 6-10 hours in traffic.

 108.
And they can run party trains, where people from Hollywood can drink wine and socialize for $1,000 round-trip.

 109.
It’s doable because this is a private train. They have the liberty to determine the price.

 110.
Q: The passengers still have 45 minutes longer to travel to get to LA from Rancho Cucamonga. Doesn’t this factor against it, too?

 111.
A: Not really. Metrolink is a good system that can get you to a lot of places in Southern California. But Brightline and Metrolink will need to coordinate with each other so that the transfer is smooth, with no waiting for trains. The coordination is really critical. Brightline will probably have to pay Metrolink, somehow, to ensure that.

 112.
Q: Bottom line, do you think this train service will succeed?

 113.
A: Oh definitely, yes. I think they will attract a lot of riders.

(Image: Las Vegas Spaceport)

 136.
Slated for 240 acres of desert land near Sin City’s border with Pahrump, Nev., the $310 million project was announced last summer by Las Vegas Spaceport CEO Rob Lauer.

 137.
“I am 100% convinced that the technology is on the cusp of existing to build a space plane you can fly into space in, go to a space hotel, the Moon, or Mars, and then come back in and land like an airplane,” Lauer, a commercial real-estate developer, told Casino.org last year.

 138.
Before opening, the spaceport will also need to build a passenger terminal, taxiway, and a control tower. Lauer’s ambitious plans also call for a rooftop observation deck, a private jet terminal, a ground school where civilians receive flight acclimation training, and a 20,000 square-foot casino — which would be leased to a local gaming company to be determined later — as well as a 200-room hotel with a restaurant.

 139.
Lauer — whose team includes advisors such as retired US Air Force Brigadier General Robert Novotny and Dave Ruppel, former director of the Colorado Spaceport — said he hopes to raise the capital from equity financing.

 140.
Currently, 14 similar spaceports are licensed by the FAA, though only two are privately owned, and you already guessed by whom. (One guy owns SpaceX, the other a little company called Amazon.)

 141.
However, instead of the $200,000-$300,000 per average it costs to ride with Elon Musk’s SpaceX or Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin, Lauer said that developing tech will bring costs down to as little as $30,000-50,000 per seat by the time his dream becomes reality.

 142.
Why Vegas?

 143.
The primary reason to build a spaceport in Las Vegas, Lauer said, is the town’s 40 million visitors per year.

 144.
“They’re all only a 15-minute helicopter ride away,” he said. “And how many folks do we have flying to Las Vegas and spending $100,000 on a hand of poker? Casinos in Las Vegas could offer our rides as a bonus to their highest-paying customers.”

 145.
Lauer’s company would not build the space planes itself, but would partner with one of the 37 companies currently seeking FAA approval to do so.

 146.
“We have a 10-year plan to build a space tourism industry here,” Lauer said.

 175.
Construction is expected to begin this summer and wrap early next year.

 176.
El Cortez opened on Nov. 7, 1941 where it still stands — on half a Fremont Street block between Sixth and Seventh streets — before Fremont was even paved that far.

 200.
Last month, the Nevada Taxicab Authority approved of the surcharges, which are activated automatically on the meter whenever taxis enter or leaves the venue. They stay they’re necessary to “financially incentivize taxi drivers to work during the EDC.”

 201.
An estimated 520,000 people are expected to attend all or part of this year’s festival.

 202.
Expensive Driving Carnival

 203.
According to an EDC subreddit, Uber charged one commenter $180, each way to and from the Strip, during peak/surge arrival and exiting hours last year. (The festival runs from dusk until dawn Friday through Sunday. )

 204.
But, the commenter posted, he was grateful to pay it after two canceled on him during a dust storm the year before. He said it was easier “to get run over by an Uber driver and taken in an ambulance then try to get picked up by them.”

 205.
Even EDC’s own website states that rideshare availability “has been extremely limited in the region” and recommends “taxis, a friend, and/or carpooling.”

 207.
As always, there is also a shuttle bus. However, EDC has already sold out of its $169 (plus taxes and fees) standard shuttles and only has $279 peak shuttles left. These depart at 6:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. from the Strip and return at 4 a.m. and 6 a.m.

 208.
Driving appears to be the only economical option, since general parking at the concert is free. However, the walks to and from the free lots were apparently long enough for the Premiere Parking Lot, right next to the venue, to almost immediately sell out of $165 parking spaces.

(Image: WWE)

 230.
It will be the annual event’s first time in Sin City since headlining Caesars Palace in 1993.

 231.
“Las Vegas is the sports and entertainment capital of the world,” Nick Khan, WWE president, is quoted as saying in Saturday’s press release. “Allegiant Stadium has proven to be even greater than the A+ venue Las Vegas guaranteed it would be.”

 232.
For several months, since Minnesota Sports and Events submitted its bid to host WrestleMania XLI, U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis was its expected location. In February, however, PWInsider.com reporter Mike Johnson became the first to officially favor Las Vegas’ odds.

 233.
Hardcore fans have been wondering why the announcement was delayed. Nearly a month has passed since this year’s WrestleMania, which is the usual venue for announcing next year’s.

 234.
A last minute change is the most likely reason.

 235.
So Why 32 Years?

 236.
While WWE has been growing steadily since 1993, when it was still essentially a made-for-TV event, the maximum attendance at a Las Vegas venue has not.

 237.
Since 2007 — not counting the COVID-affected years of 2020 and 2021 — only venues holding more than 65,000 have hosted what is also called “The Showcase of Immortals.”

 238.
But Las Vegas didn’t get a venue that big until the Raiders built one in 2020. Allegiant Stadium also played host to SummerSlam 2021, WWE’s first premium live event after a cycle of closed-door shows during the pandemic.

 239.
WWE has also been gravitating toward Vegas ever since merging with fellow sports entertainment giant UFC under the umbrella of TKO Group Holdings last September.

 240.
WWE’s first official crossover move was relocating its developmental NXT Battleground event from May 26 in Savanna, Ga. to the UFC Apex, the events and production center that hosts “UFC Fight Night” events, on June 9.

 241.
Ticket information for WrestleMania XLI will be released “in the coming months,” according to the press release, though it instructs fans to register “for pre-sale opportunities” here.

 264.
Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officers are investigating the theft of 10 or more vehicles from the parking structures in recent weeks, according to Las Vegas TV station KLAS.

 265.
One of the vehicle owners actually got a text warning that his car door had been opened by an unauthorized person. A GPS service couldn’t reveal later the stolen vehicle’s location.

 266.
When reached for comment on Thursday, airport spokesperson Joe Rajchel told Casino.org, “This is an open investigation and further questions should be referred to LVMPD.”

 267.
Cadillac Escalades are luxury vehicles. Prices of new 2024 Escalades or Escalade ESVs run from about $83,890 to $154,290, according to Car and Driver magazine.

 268.
They also recently have been reported stolen in different locations, such as Florida.

 269.
Prior Thefts

 270.
This isn’t the first time Las Vegas authorities have investigated vehicle thefts in the airport garages. In 2022, several cars were stolen there, KLAS reported.

 271.
To curb thefts, the airport added surveillance cameras and license plate readers in garages. Security guards regularly patrol the facilities and sometimes inventory what vehicles are in the parking facilities. But vehicles still get stolen even with the precautions in place, KLAS reported.

 272.
One ex-employee recommended more bicycle patrols in the parking areas at the airport to curb the thefts, KLAS added.

 273.
Woman’s Body in Car

 274.
An alarming parking garage incident took place at Harry Reid during 2022, when a woman’s body was in a Subaru in a short-term area in Terminal 1 garage for 23 days. The deceased body began to smell leading an airport employee to alert police officers. An investigation revealed that the 65-year-old woman apparently died by suicide, according to Las Vegas TV station KTNV. Reasons why the body wasn’t discovered sooner, led to questions about security measures in the airport garage.

 275.
The airport has previously pointed out there are numerous precautions in place to monitor vehicles left in the garages.

 276.
“There’s a lot of different components in place to check on the vehicles,” airport spokesperson Joe Rajchel previously told KLAS. “We have people who go through at night — check the license plates that are here to again keep that information and see what vehicles we have on property.”

 277.
Other U.S. airports, such as the one in Atlanta, also have seen a spike in the number of stolen vehicles at the start of 2024.

 278.
In just about eight weeks, Atlanta police received more than five dozen reports of vehicle thefts at parking areas at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

 279.
That’s a significant increase from the prior year, according to Atlanta TV station WAGA. There were some 66 vehicle thefts at the airport during the start of the year, compared to 11 stolen vehicles during the same period in 2023, according to the Atlanta police.

 280.
Suggested Precautions

 281.
Rajchel told Casino.org that travelers should always:

 282.

 283.
Lock their car

 284.
Take their keys and parking ticket with them

 285.
Take their valuables with them or hide them

 308.
Jemarcus Williams, 46, entered the plea to two counts of DUI resulting in death before Clark County District Court Judge Susan Johnson.

 309.
When he’s sentenced on June 11, he faces between two and 20 years behind bars for each count, according to a plea deal.

 310.
He also must pay $5K to the victims’ families. His driver’s license isn’t in effect. If it goes back in place, he must put a breathalyzer in his vehicle for between one and three years.

 311.
Williams fled the accident scene after the crash, but his parked vehicle soon was located by officers at a Las Vegas apartment complex near J Street and Monroe Avenue, according to Las Vegas TV station KSNV. They apprehended Williams nearby.

 312.
Original Charges

 313.
Williams initially was charged with two counts each of reckless driving resulting in death, driving under the influence resulting in death, and duty to stop at the scene of an accident involving death.

 314.
The counts were changed as a result of the plea bargain.

 315.
Drinking at Palms

 316.
It later was revealed by police that Williams had been drinking at the Palms Casino in the hours before the crash.

 317.
Security guards there admonished him not to drive his vehicle due to his intoxication. They told him if he got into his car, they would contact local police.

 318.
He chose to hide behind a tree on the gaming property, authorities said. When guards left the area, he entered his car and drove away.

 319.
The crash killed Nevada State Police (NSP) Sgt. Michael Abbate and Trooper Alberto Felix on Nov. 30, 2023.

 320.
One trooper died at the crash site. The other was declared dead at University Medical Center.

 321.
The troopers were struck after they stopped on the side of the highway to check out a motorist who was asleep in his car.

 322.
Abbate joined the NSP in December 2013 and was promoted to sergeant shortly before his death, according to Fox News. Felix joined the NSP in January 2019 after previously serving in the U.S. Air Force.

 323.
Both were believed to have been survived by children and other family members.

 324.
Upon the deaths, the Nevada NSP issued a statement. It said, “Sergeant Abbate and Trooper Felix dedicated their careers to serving the State of Nevada with exceptional commitment and pride. The Nevada State Police extends its heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of our fallen heroes.”

Why not? (Image: Loomis Dean/Vintage Las Vegas)

 346.
The Bellagio fountains were not the first fountain show in Las Vegas. “Dancing Waters” debuted in 1955 at the Royal Nevada Hotel.

 347.
In one regard, it was actually more of a star for the brand new resort than the fountain show has proven for the Bellagio. And that’s because it was an actual showroom headliner. The fountains performed nightly at the back of the Crown Room theater’s stage — for customers who paid to see them, unlike all those Bellagio freeloaders.

 348.
Other acts booked by the Royal Nevada, such as soprano Helen Traubel and comedian Dave Barry, actually opened for the fountains.

 349.
“While the orchestra plays and the tourists ooh and ah, the colored waters do the mambo, waltz, and skip around,” according to the UP account.

 351.
Youth of Fountain

 352.
“Dancing Waters” was invented by German engineer Otto Przystawik and Hans Hasslach, the impresario who functioned as his Steve Jobs.

 353.
Because there were no computers yet, Hasslach controlled the show’s five fountains — which sat over a $250K plumbing system ($5.8 million today) — via a contraption with 400 switches and buttons connected to 10,000 feet of wiring. Resembling a recording desk, this console commanded 19 50-horsepower engines that determined how the 4,000 jet streams revolved, swayed, and shot 5 tons of water up to 50 feet in the air.

 354.
“His actions are so interesting, the audiences often watches him instead of the water,” the UP reported.

 355.
“Dancing Waters” debuted at the West German Industrial Exposition in 1952 and headlined Radio City Music Hall the next year, playing an eight-week run that drew 1.5 million.

 356.

An undated Royal Nevada postcard, circa 1955. (Image: UNLV Special Collections)

 357.
Though the Royal Nevada called itself “the Home of the Dancing Waters,” however, it was only one of a few systems from the same company operating in the US, most of which toured throughout the 1950s. (One returned to Radio City every Easter for six years.) And luckily, Hasslach had previous experience breaking the equipment down.

 358.
And that’s because the Royal Nevada turned out to be no place for a permanent anything.

 359.
Battle Royal

 360.
The resort — one of four to open in Vegas within a six week-period — struggled from the very start, closing and reopening several times before finally going under, for the last time, three years later.

 361.
In 1959, the Royal Nevada was repurposed, by the operators of the resort next door, to become the Stardust Auditorium. It served as convention space and overflow hotel rooms for the Stardust until it was imploded in 2007.

 362.
Resorts World now stands on the site.

 363.

Liberace performs with the “Dancing Waters” on TV in 1958. (Image: Pinterest)

 364.
For the rest of the ‘50s, “Dancing Waters” entered a circuit of temporary, small-time events including the Southern California Exposition at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, the Community Fair in Ontario, Calif., and Neptune Days in Redondo Beach, Calif.

 365.
One of the touring systems was displayed at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, and made a return visit to Las Vegas in 1969 (for a special event at Circus Circus). Others were displayed at Universal Studios, Sea World, and Hershey Park.

 366.
Liberace performed with one during a 1978 residency at the Las Vegas Hilton.

 367.
Another system finally found permanent digs in a specially built Disneyland Hotel amphitheater in 1970. In 1992, that show was replaced by one called “Waltzing Waters,” which happened to have also been designed by Otto Przystawik.

 368.
What became of Hans isn’t preserved by the internet or newspaper archives. But Otto’s son, Michael, carries on the family tradition today by operating another fountain show called “Liquid Fireworks.”

 390.
Esports has surged in popularity over recent years, evolving from niche gaming competitions into a full-blown global phenomenon that draws millions of viewers and players. Alongside this growth, esports betting has also risen, with numerous sites now offering markets on everything from League of Legends and CS:GO to Dota 2 and Overwatch. For those looking to dive into this exciting world, choosing the right platform is crucial. Here are the essential features to consider when searching for the best esports betting sites.

 391.
 392.
 393.
 394.
1. Range of Games and Betting Markets

 395.
 396.
 397.
 398.
The best esports betting sites offer a wide array of games and tournaments on which to bet. A diverse selection ensures that bettors can find markets on their favorite esports titles and events year-round. Additionally, these sites should provide a variety of betting markets for each event, including standard win bets, over/under scores, first to achieve X, map winners, and more. This variety allows bettors to use their knowledge of the game and teams to find betting opportunities that align with their expertise and interest.

 399.
 400.
 401.
 402.
2. Competitive Odds

 403.
 404.
 405.
 406.
Odds determine the potential return on bets and can vary significantly between different esports betting sites. The best sites offer competitive odds that provide good value to bettors. Before committing to a site, it’s wise to compare the odds it offers on several games with those available on other sites. This comparison can maximize potential returns and ensure you are not short-changing yourself on winnings.

 407.
 408.
 409.
 410.
3. Licensing and Security

 411.
 412.
 413.
 414.
Safety should never be compromised when betting online. The best esports betting sites are those that are fully licensed and regulated by reputable gaming authorities. This ensures they adhere to strict standards of operation, protecting users’ funds and personal information. Moreover, secure sites employ encryption technologies to safeguard data transfers, ensuring that all financial transactions and personal details are protected from unauthorized access.

 415.
 416.
 417.
 418.
4. User Experience and Interface

 419.
 420.
 421.
 422.
A well-designed website or mobile app plays a crucial role in the overall betting experience. The best esports betting sites feature user-friendly interfaces that make navigating through different sections seamless. Whether it’s signing up, depositing funds, placing bets, or withdrawing winnings, each process should be straightforward and hassle-free.
