55.
Anyone else ever been in that weird twilight zone where the numbers say you’re making money but your bank account says, “Umm… no you’re not?”

 56.
It’s enough to drive you nuts. You’re pulling in sales, the profit margins are decent, but every time you look at the bottom line, the cash has mysteriously vanished.

 57.
Here’s the thing most folks miss: Profit and cash flow are NOT the same thing. And a lot of seemingly healthy, profitable businesses go under because they don’t get that difference.

 58.
I’m obsessed with breaking down complex topics into bite-sized pieces, so let’s demystify this whole profit vs. cash flow thing. Here’s a metaphor:

 59.

 60.
Profit is like the scorecard at the end of a sporting match. It tells you who won, but not how the game actually unfolded.

 61.
Cash flow is like the play-by-play of the game. It shows you how the money actually moves in and out of your business throughout the contest.

 62.

 63.
Why should you care? Because you can win the game (be profitable) and still lose the championship (go bankrupt).

 64.
Let’s illustrate this before diving deeper…

 65.
Scenario: Say you run an e-commerce store selling fancy widgets. On paper, you have great margins. But what happens if…

 66.

 67.
Most of your sales are on credit, where you get paid way later.

 68.
You just sank money into a big inventory order.

 69.
Your rent just doubled.

 70.

 71.
Your profit for this period might say “healthy,” but that doesn’t matter if you can’t pay your bills NOW.

 72.
That’s where the danger lies…

 73.
Alright, now that you understand that profit and cash flow are not interchangeable, let’s dive into WHY there’s this disconnect in the first place.

 74.
Here are a few of the major culprits:

 75.

 76.
The Timing Conundrum: Profit is calculated on a fancy system called “accrual accounting.” This is great for getting a big-picture view over time, but it can hide the day-to-day problems. You might recognize revenue from a sale today, even if the customer doesn’t pay for 90 days. Likewise, a big expense – like buying equipment – might be spread out over time on your profit statement even though you wrote the check all at once.

 77.
Inventory is a Money Suck: If you sell physical products, inventory is your lifeblood and your biggest cash hog. You need to have enough stock on hand, but that money is TIED UP until you sell those items. If you overestimate demand and get stuck with warehouses full of stuff, your perfect profit picture can quickly turn into a cash nightmare.

 78.
Growing Too Fast: This sounds counterintuitive, right? Believe it or not, rapid growth can destroy an otherwise healthy business. More customers = more sales = AWESOME, right? Well, only if you have the cash on hand to support that growth. You need money to hire more staff, invest in marketing, scale manufacturing, etc. Often, the profits lag behind these upfront growth expenses.

 79.
Debtor Danger: Let’s say you’re generous (or perhaps disorganized) with payment terms. Customers love you, they just pay… whenever. It’s money you’ll eventually get, but bills don’t care about “eventually.”

 80.

 81.
Key Takeaway: Even if you’re profitable according to a spreadsheet, your business can still be on shaky financial ground if your cash flow isn’t in sync.

 82.
So how do you stay on top of this and avoid disaster?

 83.
Here are some practical tools and strategies:

 84.

 85.
The Cash Flow Statement: Your New Best Friend. If you’re not already intimately familiar with this financial document, change that ASAP. Unlike an income statement (which shows profit), the cash flow statement tracks the actual movement of money in and out of your business. Analyzing this tells you if you’re generating enough cash to cover your expenses and reinvest.

 86.
Become a Forecasting Pro: Don’t just react to the past, build models to anticipate your future cash position. This is where spreadsheets become your superpower. Project your sales, known expenses, and even the timing of when you expect things to be paid.

 87.
Track Those Key Metrics: Here are a few to watch closely:
 88.

 89.
Days Sales Outstanding (DSO): How long it takes customers to pay you, on average. Lower is better!

 90.
Inventory Turnover:* How quickly you sell through your stock. Higher generally means better cash flow.

 91.
Burn Rate: If you are spending more than you make, how many months does the cash you have left last?

 92.

 93.

 94.
Negotiate Like a Boss: Can you get better payment terms from suppliers? Can you convince customers to pay upfront or on shorter cycles? Even small tweaks here can have a big impact on your cash position.

 95.
Get Paid FASTER: Make it ridiculously easy for customers to pay invoices. Implement online payment systems, offer discounts for early payments, and don’t be afraid to chase those late payers!

 96.
A Line of Credit Can Be Your Savior: If you know you have seasonal swings or big expenses coming up, having a line of credit with your bank can provide that safety net to bridge the gap. Don’t wait until you’re desperate – secure this before you need it.

 97.

 98.
Key Takeaway: The best way to survive and thrive isn’t just about profitability, it’s about managing your cash flow proactively.

 99.
Wrap Up

 100.
Cash flow is the lifeblood of your business. Always remember – It’s not how much money you make, it’s how much money you keep. Master the art of cash flow and you’ll dramatically increase your odds of long-term success.

 101.
Until next time,

 140.

 141.
We all crave those high-functioning teams – the ones that crackle with energy and just get things done. But more often than not, we end up with teams plagued by politics, passive-aggression, and a whole lot of wasted effort.

 142.
The thing is, it’s rarely a lack of talent or good intentions. The culprit, more often than not, is a concept explored in Patrick Lencioni’s book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team. The first, and most fundamental dysfunction Lencioni points out? A lack of trust.

 143.
Trust me, this isn’t some touchy-feely HR concept

 144.
Think of it this way: Imagine playing a high-stakes poker game. Everyone’s wearing sunglasses, keeping their cards to their chest. Would that game be any fun? Probably not. Would you win big? Even less likely. Effective teams operate fundamentally differently.

 145.
Here’s the problem – we’re wired to protect ourselves. In a workplace, this looks like:

 146.

 147.
Hiding mistakes: No one wants to look dumb, so problems get swept under the rug.

 148.
Hesitating to ask for help: Asking for help feels like admitting weakness.

 149.
Dreading feedback: Feedback turns into criticism because no one has built up that trust foundation.

 150.

 151.
Sound familiar? The cost is real

 152.
Lack of trust isn’t just uncomfortable– it’s costly.

 153.

 154.
Wasted time: Endless meetings spent beating around the bush.

 155.
Missed opportunities: Great ideas die because no one feels safe taking a risk.

 156.
Spiraling burnout: People are stressed about protecting themselves, not driving results.

 157.

 158.
Okay, so we’ve diagnosed the problem. But how on earth do we build trust on a team? That’s where things get interesting.

 159.
Forget the trust falls (seriously)

 160.
Look, I’m not going to prescribe team-building retreats with awkward high fives and trust falls. We need actionable strategies that can be integrated into the daily rhythm of work, not one-off events that everyone dreads.

 161.
Here are a few ideas to get the ball rolling:

 162.

 163.
Vulnerability is your superpower: Leaders, this one’s for you. Own up to a mistake you made, share a struggle you’re facing, ask for team input on a tough decision. Model the behavior you want to see, and you’ll be shocked how quickly your team follows suit.

 164.
The Personal History Exercise: Super simple, but surprisingly effective. Set aside some team meeting time for members to share a little about themselves– background, hobbies, something non-work. Breaks down barriers way faster than discussing last quarter’s numbers.

 165.
Spotlight Wins (and Lessons) Weekly: Make it a habit to publicly acknowledge good work. But also, encourage sharing a failure or a “lesson learned the hard way.” Normalizes that we all stumble and creates a safe space to unpack those missteps together.

 166.
Feedback Reimagined: Ditch the annual performance review. Instead, make small, frequent, specific feedback the norm. More like a micro-coaching session than a formal evaluation. Remember, feedback delivered with kindness and respect builds trust, not defensiveness.

 167.

 168.
Small steps, big impact

 169.
Building trust won’t happen overnight. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. But, I’m betting even a few of these shifts will start to change the dynamic on your team. You’ll see less posturing, more open communication, and the beginnings of that truly collaborative energy we all wish for.

 170.
However, here’s the thing… trust is just the foundation. Lencioni outlines four more dysfunctions that can sabotage your team.

 171.
A word of warning: Trust alone is not enough

 172.
Alright, let’s say you’ve tackled the trust problem. People are more open, feedback’s flowing, and your team is humming along… or so it seems. There’s a sneaky pitfall you need to watch out for—one that Lencioni lays out in his model.

 173.
Remember, building trust is just the base of the pyramid. What good is a team that trusts each other but doesn’t have a spine? That brings us to the second prevalent dysfunction: Fear of Conflict.

 174.
Not all conflict is bad. Think of it like fire

 175.
Fire can destroy a forest, or it can be harnessed to cook food and keep us warm. Conflict works the same way. Unproductive conflict – the kind fueled by bruised egos and personal attacks – is toxic. But constructive conflict is essential for growth.

 176.
Teams that avoid conflict end up with:

 177.

 178.
Simmering resentments: The unspoken stuff always finds a way to bubble to the surface.

 179.
Stagnant decision-making: Everyone dances around the hard topics, and nothing ever really gets resolved.

 180.
Missed opportunities for innovation: Real breakthroughs often come out of messy debates. If everyone’s always ‘playing nice’, you’ll settle for safe mediocrity.

 181.

 182.
Fostering healthy debate (without the bloodshed)

 183.
The goal isn’t to become a team of ruthless debaters, but to learn to disagree productively. Leaders, it’s on you to set the tone. Reward passionate discussion, call out passive-aggressive behavior, and show your team that it’s okay to have tough conversations if done with respect.

 184.
Beyond Trust & Conflict: The Final Three Dysfunctions

 185.
Alright, we’ve tackled trust and productive conflict. But, as Lencioni warns, there’s more work to do. Here’s a quick hit on the top three remaining dysfunctions to watch out for:

 186.

 187.
Lack of Commitment: Ever been in those meetings where everyone nods along, only to discover later that no one was fully on board? That’s lack of commitment. To combat this, encourage open debate before decisions, ensure everyone’s voice is heard, and set crystal-clear expectations afterward.

 188.
Avoidance of Accountability: When no one holds their teammates accountable for results, standards start slipping. Peer-to-peer accountability is tough, but essential. Establish clear metrics for success and create a culture where it’s okay to respectfully call out a teammate who’s falling short.

 189.
Inattention to Results: It’s easy for teams to get caught up in internal politics and lose sight of what truly matters – achieving meaningful results. Keep collective goals front and center. Celebrate wins publicly and tie recognition directly to the impact a team member has made.

 190.

 191.
The Bottom Line

 192.
Teamwork is messy. Lencioni’s model is a powerful tool to diagnose the specific challenges your team might be facing. Building a high-performance team that’s both trusting AND ready to butt heads (the good kind!) is an ongoing climb.

 193.
But I promise — the view from the top is worth it.

 194.
Until next time,

 195.
Scott

 234.
Let’s be brutally honest for a second: most “customer profiles” are garbage. Agonizingly detailed spreadsheets full of age ranges, income brackets, and favorite brunch spots. They make us feel productive, but they don’t get us any closer to truly understanding who we’re built to serve.

 235.
Why? Because buying decisions aren’t driven by logic. They’re driven by primal, messy, often irrational PAIN POINTS.

 236.
Think of it like this:

 237.

 238.
A 35-year-old single woman in NYC making $120k/year might seem like an obvious customer for a high-end meal service… but she hates cooking, has no time, and just wants healthy food without thinking. Demographics miss the core problem she needs solved.

 239.

 240.
A cash-strapped college student might be desperate for a tool to improve his grades… but if that tool’s complicated and has a steep learning curve, it’s useless. Here, ease of use trumps affordability.

 241.
So, how do you dig deeper? How do you uncover the raw, emotional needs that truly motivate people to open their wallets?

 242.
1. Stop selling, start listening.

 243.
Every customer interaction is a goldmine of pain points. Forget the pitch for a minute. What keeps your existing customers up at night? What are they actually frustrated by?

 244.
Here are some sneaky-good questions:

 245.

 246.
“What led you to start looking for a solution like ours?”

 247.
“Can you walk me through the situation that finally convinced you to try us?”

 248.
“If you could wave a magic wand and fix one thing about [problem area], what would it be?”

 249.

 250.
2. Lurk where your customers live (online, that is).

 251.
Think Reddit threads, niche Facebook groups, competitor reviews… wherever your target audience is venting, that’s where the insights are. What language do they use? What solutions work for them, and what doesn’t?

 252.
Quick caveat: Don’t be creepy. You’re observing to better understand, not to pounce and sell.

 253.
3. Embrace the “Jobs to Be Done” mindset.

 254.
This framework flips traditional marketing on its head. Instead of focusing on who your customer is, consider what job they’re “hiring” your product or service to do.

 255.
Example: A fancy gym doesn’t sell fitness. It sells status, community, a sense of accomplishment.

 256.
Okay, so we’ve established that pain points are where the real customer-understanding magic happens. But how do you turn those messy insights into actionable profiles?

 257.
Here’s where things get fun:

 258.
Step 1: Give your pain points PERSONALITY.

 259.
Imagine your ideal customer as a real person with a name, a face, and a backstory. Let’s call her Frustrated Fran.

 260.

 261.
Fran’s Pain: She spends hours every week on tedious, repetitive tasks that drain her energy and prevent her from focusing on high-value work.

 262.
Fran’s Desire: She craves simplicity, a way to streamline her workflow so she feels productive and in control of her time.

 263.

 264.
The more detailed you go with Fran’s struggles, the clearer your ideal customer becomes… and the easier it’ll be to spot her in the wild.

 265.
Step 2: Identify patterns and priorities.

 266.
Not all pain points are created equal. Some are urgent (“my house is on fire!”), while others are nagging (“my haircut needs a refresh”).

 267.
Your goal is to find the problems that are:

 268.

 269.
Deeply felt: They cause real stress and frustration.

 270.
Frequent: They pop up regularly, not just once in a blue moon.

 271.
Underserved: Existing solutions are either lacking or inaccessible.

 272.

 273.
These are your goldmine opportunities.

 274.
Step 3: Get specific about the “before” and “after”.

 275.
This is where your product or service becomes the hero. Paint a vivid picture of how you transform Frustrated Fran’s world:

 276.

 277.
Before: Fran feels overwhelmed, scattered, and like she’s constantly playing catch-up.

 278.
After: Fran feels calm, focused, and empowered to tackle the work that truly matters.

 279.

 280.
The more compelling this “after” state is, the more irresistible your offer will be.

 281.
Bonus Tip: Don’t ignore the emotional payoff.

 282.
People don’t just buy solutions; they buy feelings. Does your product make Fran feel more confident? In control? Validated? Weave those emotional benefits into your profile.

 283.
All this deep dive into your ideal customer isn’t just for kicks. It’s about creating marketing that connects on a gut level.

 284.
So, how do you use your shiny new customer profiles to do just that?

 285.
1. Ditch the feature dump, speak to the PAIN.

 286.
Remember: people don’t buy drills; they buy holes. Stop listing what your product does and start hammering home how it solves your Ideal Customer’s most burning problems.

 287.

 288.
Bad: “Our software has advanced task automation capabilities.”

 289.
Good: “Stop wasting hours on mindless work. Regain your sanity with effortless automation.”

 290.

 291.
See the difference?

 292.
2. Use your customers’ own language.

 293.
Remember those online forums you lurked in? Mine them for gold! The exact words and phrases your target audience uses to describe their pain points are the most powerful weapons in your copywriting arsenal.

 294.
3. Focus on transformation, not just transactions.

 295.
Your marketing shouldn’t just promote a product; it should sell the dream outcome. Show Frustrated Fran in all her post-solution glory — calm, collected, crushing her goals.

 296.
4. Test, iterate, refine.

 297.
Customer profiling is an ongoing process. Pay attention to what messaging resonates (and what doesn’t). Sometimes, the most surprising insights come from what you think should work, but flops spectacularly.

 298.
A final thought:

 299.
In a world overflowing with noise, empathy is your superpower. The deeper you understand your ideal customer’s struggles, the more likely you are to create solutions they truly crave — and marketing that speaks directly to their hearts.

 300.
P.S. Have you crafted your own customer profile yet? Hit reply and share your biggest takeaways!

 301.
Until next time,

 340.

 341.
Hey friends,

 342.
You’ve got goals. You’ve probably got a to-do list a mile long. There’s always so much to do, so many opportunities. But how many of those things are the RIGHT things, the ones that will truly move the needle? Sometimes, focus is our biggest superpower.

 343.
Today, let’s dive into a concept that changed how I look at business and life: The Hedgehog Concept. Inspired by the brilliant business thinker Jim Collins (his book “Good to Great” is a must-read), it’s all about finding that ONE thing that makes you exceptional.

 344.
The Hedgehog’s Secret

 345.
The name comes from an ancient Greek parable. The fox knows many strategies, it’s wily and clever. The hedgehog knows one BIG thing — how to roll into a ball of spikes. The fox circles and circles, trying to get at the hedgehog, but comes up empty-handed every time.

 346.
The lesson? If we figure out what we’re uniquely suited to do and do THAT better than anyone else, we become (almost) unstoppable. Sounds simple, right? It’s surprisingly hard.

 347.
The Hedgehog Concept boils down to answering three key questions:

 348.

 349.
Passion: What fires you up? What do you naturally LOVE doing?

 350.
Best in the World: Forget about just being good — what could you become the absolute BEST at?

 351.
Economic Engine: What actually makes money and drives your business?

 352.

 353.
Where these three circles intersect, that’s your Hedgehog Concept.

 354.
Let’s get real: Why does this matter?

 355.
Picture this: You’re scattered, chasing every shiny new idea. You’re spreading yourself thin. You’re getting decent results, but you’re also burning out and maybe feeling like you’re never TRULY breaking through.

 356.
Now imagine the opposite: You have crystal clarity on your ONE thing. You ruthlessly prioritize that, saying no to everything else. Results multiply because all that energy is focused.

 357.
Think of it like sunlight. Just warm rays spread out all over won’t start a fire. But concentrate those same rays through a magnifying glass? Things get exciting quickly.

 358.
Alright, enough theory. Let’s tackle this step by step…

 359.
Step 1: Deep Dive on Passion

 360.
Okay, let’s be honest — sometimes we think we’re passionate about something (money? status?) only to find it doesn’t give us that deep joy long-term. So, digging deeper is essential. Here are a few exercises:

 361.

 362.
The Childhood Test: Remember those hours you’d lose track of, totally absorbed? Making stuff? Building? Organizing? Connecting with people? There’s usually a clue there.

 363.
The Boredom Test: Flip it around! What are those tasks that drain your soul even if they make money? There’s likely a lesson there about what NOT to focus on.

 364.
The Energy Audit: Where does your energy naturally FLOW? Notice what fires you up, what makes your eyes light up when you’re in your zone.

 365.

 366.
A Note on Passion: It’s not always butterflies and rainbows. It might involve hard work you genuinely ENJOY. Sometimes grit plays a bigger role than we think.

 367.
Step 2: What Could You Be The Best At?

 368.
This isn’t about ego, it’s about honest assessment and ambition. Here’s what to consider:

 369.

 370.
Skills & Talents: What comes naturally? Think beyond the obvious. Some people are innately gifted at pattern recognition, building relationships, storytelling, etc.

 371.
Knowledge & Niche Expertise: Are you obsessed with a particular industry, technology, or problem? That specialized knowledge can be a HUGE differentiator.

 372.
Unique Worldview: How you see the world is an asset. Do you have a perspective on how things fit together that others don’t? Lean into that.

 373.

 374.
Caveat: “Best” is relative. Start with “Best in my town, my network, my market segment”. Realistically, you’re not becoming the best heart surgeon in the WORLD overnight. But could you be the best in your specific space?

 375.
Step 3: Does It Pay The Bills?

 376.
This is the reality check. Sadly, we can’t all be full-time puppy snugglers. Your Hedgehog has to make money or sustain itself somehow. This is where it gets specific to your business model:

 377.

 378.
Products: Can you create something significantly BETTER, cheaper, or more uniquely suited to a specific audience than the competition?

 379.
Services: Do you offer a superior skillset, speed, or personalized experience that commands higher prices?

 380.
Business Model: Even with a standard product/service, can you innovate how you package, distribute, or market it that creates a unique economic advantage?

 381.

 382.
Quick Tip: Don’t try and force all three circles to fit perfectly right away. Start with what you CAN control — your passion and developing your potential for being world-class. Sometimes the economic piece becomes clear as you go.

 383.
Hedgehogs in the Wild

 384.
Let’s make this concrete. Here are a few examples of Hedgehog Concepts in action:

 385.

 386.
Southwest Airlines: They’re not the fanciest, don’t fly everywhere, but their Hedgehog is short-haul, low-cost, friendly service. That clarity shaped everything they did, leading to huge success.

 387.
Nucor: A steel company that sounds boring, right? Their Hedgehog was building mini-mills (vs giant traditional ones) and an insanely performance-focused pay structure. It made them an industry disruptor.

 388.
Vanguard: Not flashy, but obsessed with low-cost index funds for the average investor. That specialization built an investment empire.

 389.

 390.
Notice: Their Hedgehogs aren’t just mission statements. They guided every major decision about what to do AND what NOT to do.

 391.
Putting Your Hedgehog Together

 392.
This isn’t a one-and-done exercise. It’s a process. Here’s how to get started:

 393.

 394.
Brain Dump: Grab pen and paper or a blank doc. Set a timer, and write down EVERYTHING related to those three circles — passions, possible “bests”, economic ideas. Be messy!

 395.
Look for Overlap: Are there themes? Connections you wouldn’t have noticed otherwise? Don’t worry if it’s rough, there might just be a nugget in there.

 396.
Seek Feedback: Don’t do this alone! Talk to those who know you well. They might see brilliance in you that you’re blind to.

 397.
Iterate: Your Hedgehog may not be crystal clear overnight. That’s okay. Test ideas! Run small experiments. Refine as you learn more.

 398.

 399.
Final Thoughts:

 400.
The Hedgehog Concept is deceptively powerful. It sounds simple but takes courage to truly embrace. Our world rewards multi-talented generalists, but fortunes are made by focused specialists.

 401.
Remember: it’s as much about what you say NO to as what you say yes to.

 402.
Are you ready to shed some of the ‘fox’ and discover your inner Hedgehog? Let me know your thoughts or questions!

 403.
P.S. If you loved this concept, I highly recommend digging deeper into “Good to Great” by Jim Collins. It’s packed with insights like this.

 404.
Until next time,

 823.
Check out my Podcast, connect with me on YouTube / Twitter, and read my daily newsletter.

 825.

 826.
The “Perfect Fit” is a Trap: Jobs advertised as magical and fulfilling are often unrealistic. Waiting for something that aligns perfectly with your pre-existing skills and passions hinders growth and action.

 827.
Ownership Over Employment: Adopting a CEO mindset, even within a traditional job, gives you leverage. Focus on expanding your impact and value, not merely completing tasks assigned to you.

 828.
Build a Power Portfolio Instead: Building multiple income streams, cultivating diverse skills, and expanding your network creates a safety net and makes you more adaptable in a changing economy.

 835.
Hiring the right people is a make-or-break situation for small businesses. That’s why I consistently use LinkedIn Jobs. It’s the best way to access a vast network of top-tier professionals – something you won’t find on generic job boards. LinkedIn’s platform simplifies the entire hiring process, something incredibly important when you’re juggling a million other responsibilities.

 836.
Also, they have a ton of tools that can help you like the job description builder…. it’s a lifesavers.

 837.
It’s easy to see why millions of small businesses choose LinkedIn for their hiring needs.

 838.
Elevate your hiring process – post your next job opening for free at linkedin.com/EXCELLENCE. You’ll experience firsthand why LinkedIn Jobs is the go-to choice for finding exceptional talent. (Terms and conditions apply.)

 842.
Picture this: You’re stuck in another soul-crushing Zoom meeting, fantasizing about your escape. “If only I found my true calling, then work would be amazing!”.

 843.
Sound familiar?

 844.
Spoiler alert: that elusive dream job doesn’t exist.

 845.
The whole concept is designed to keep you spinning your wheels, never taking real action.

 846.
Let’s break down this comforting lie.

 847.
The Dream Job Delusion

 848.
We’re spoon-fed the idea that out there is a magical job that will be fun every day, effortlessly match our skills, and change the world (all with flexible hours!).

 849.
Problem is, this is a fairy tale, and it’s harming more careers than it helps.

 850.
Here’s the harsh truth:

 851.

 852.
The Fun Mirage: No job is a non-stop joyride. Even passion-fueled work has grunt-work days, difficult clients, and setbacks.

 853.
The Skill Lottery: Waiting to find something you’re already good at limits your growth. Real fulfillment comes from tackling challenges and getting better over time.

 854.
The Unicorn Syndrome: That perfect-sounding job posting? Written by an HR person, not your guardian angel. It probably involves 10 roles crammed into one impossible package.

 855.

 856.
Mythbusting the “Perfect Fit”

 857.
Here’s the thing about career fulfillment – it’s usually a messy, iterative process. Some of the most successful and satisfied people:

 858.

 859.
Fell into their paths: Chance encounters, side projects, and “good enough” opportunities turned into something amazing with time and effort.

 860.
Made their own damn job: Instead of seeking the ideal company, they carved their own niche, often finding more freedom and influence than on a traditional path.

 861.
Prioritized people over job titles: They found a team or a boss who believed in them, creating space to grow and experiment far beyond the original job description.

 862.

 863.
The Power of Doing Over Dreaming

 864.
The antidote to the ‘dream job’ paralysis? Relentless action, guided by a few core principles:

 865.

 866.
Seek the Stretch Zone: Where could you deliberately choose a bit of discomfort in exchange for massive growth potential, even if it’s not a fairytale “fit”?

 867.
Bet on Yourself, Not a Job Description: What problem can you solve, with or without a company backing you? Developing this skill makes you invaluable.

 868.
Optimize for the Day-to-Day, Not the Title: Who will you be working with? What will you actually do? That matters more than prestige.

 869.

 870.
The Choice Point

 871.
It’s tempting to cling to the dream job fantasy. But the really empowering question is this:

 872.
How badly do you want to build a career you love? Enough to embrace some discomfort, to be more interested in doing than in finding the abstract ideal?

 873.
What’s The Solution?

 874.
Now… we’ve demolished the myth of the effortless, pre-destined “dream job.”

 875.
The good news is, that’s way more liberating than it sounds.

 876.
Instead of chasing an elusive target, what if we shift to a mindset of building the kind of career that truly empowers you?

 877.
This is where the concept of a Power Portfolio comes in.

 878.
What the Heck is a Power Portfolio?

 879.
Think of it as a diversified collection of income streams, projects, and skillsets that grants you leverage and fuels a fulfilling career journey:

 880.

 881.
Multiple Revenue Streams: Not just your salary. Side hustles, small-scale experiments, or even building skills to consult in your niche down the line.

 882.
The “Slash” Mentality: You’re more than your job title. You’re a marketer / writer / budding coder. More slashes = more optionality.

 883.
Network as Net Worth: Prioritize real relationships with people in diverse fields. These connections become opportunity generators.

 884.
Ownership Mindset: You’re not a cog in a machine, you’re a CEO even within a traditional job – seeking to expand your impact, not just complete tasks.

 885.

 886.
Why a Portfolio Beats the Dream Job Hunt

 887.
Here’s where this gets strategically powerful:

 888.

 889.
Recession-Proofing: If one income source falters, you have a safety net. Plus, diverse experience makes you more adaptable in a changing market.

 890.
Negotiating Power: When you’re not wholly reliant on one paycheck, you can walk away from bad situations, demanding the treatment you deserve.

 891.
Discovering Hidden Opportunities: Side projects often turn into full-blown businesses or unexpected career shifts. This beats applying for jobs blindly.

 892.
The Anti-Fragile Career: With a portfolio, you’re constantly learning and evolving alongside market needs, not scrambling to catch up.

 893.

 894.
How to Start Building Your Power Portfolio

 895.
No need to quit your job tomorrow (unless you REALLY want to). Start small:

 896.

 897.
List Your “Weird” Skills: The thing you do for fun but never put on a resume? That might be your niche consulting angle.

 898.
The 5-Hour Side Hustle: Can you carve out 5 hours a week to build a tiny product, offer a service, or write a newsletter in your field?

 899.
Micro-Mentorship: Find ONE person whose career you admire. Don’t ask for a job, ask for a 20-minute informational chat. Connections compound rapidly.

 900.
Document, Don’t Just Do: Turn your work wins into case studies, share your process on social media. Visibility = unexpected opportunities.

 901.

 902.
The Power Portfolio Shift

 903.
Building a career you love isn’t about luck or finding the ONE true company. It’s about cultivating a set of skills, revenue streams, and relationships that make you indispensable in any environment.

 904.
It puts control back in your hands, even in chaotic times.

 1083.
Is Self-Esteem Holding You Back? We’ve been told to love ourselves, but that might not be the path to a truly fulfilling life. Could it be making us less resilient?

 1084.
The Power of Self-Discipline (It’s Not What You Think): Forget fluffy affirmations – building character through action is how we create real success. In this newsletter, I’m unpacking why embracing the tough stuff is key.

 1085.
Self-Concept vs. Self-Esteem: Which Matters More?: We’ll dive into the difference between fleeting feelings and a core belief in your own capabilities.

 1092.

 1093.
Also, they have a ton of tools that can help you like the job description builder…. it’s a lifesavers.

 1094.
It’s easy to see why millions of small businesses choose LinkedIn for their hiring needs.

 1095.
Elevate your hiring process – post your next job opening for free at linkedin.com/EXCELLENCE. 1097.

 1098.

 1099.
I’ve been thinking about the concept of self-esteem, and I’ve realized that it might be doing more harm than good. I want to share two counterintuitive arguments against it.

 1100.
I was thinking of turning these ideas into one newsletter today and one newsletter next week, but I figure I’ll have something new that I want to write about next week so I’ll just give you both of my ideas now.

 1101.
The question that prompted these ideas was very simple.

 1102.
In a world focused on feeling amazing, why do so many people still feel unfulfilled?

 1103.
Could it be that the self-esteem movement, while well-intentioned, has inadvertently made us less resilient, less capable?

 1104.
Feeling special isn’t enough; it’s self-discipline and owning your life that pave the way to lasting achievement.

 1105.
Let’s unlearn some feel-good platitudes and discover the true power of showing up, even when it’s hard.

 1106.
Part 1: The Power of Self-Discipline and Personal Responsibility

 1107.
We’re drowning in a sea of self-help advice telling us to love ourselves more. But constant affirmations and chasing a feel-good state won’t build a meaningful life. It takes grit and owning your choices. That’s the path to real fulfillment and lasting achievement.

 1108.
The Marshmallow Experiment & The Antifragility Framework

 1109.
Remember the Marshmallow Experiment? The kids who could resist the tempting treat went on to have far greater life outcomes. What does this teach us? Delayed gratification is a key to success, but more importantly, it’s like weight training for the mind. This ties into Nassim Taleb’s concept of ‘Antifragility’. Systems that get stronger from stress, not weaker, are the ones that thrive. Building self-discipline is making your mind antifragile.

 1110.
The Illusion of Self-Esteem: Why It Backfires

 1111.
The self-esteem movement sounds noble, but it backfires in unintended ways:

 1112.

 1113.
The Entitlement Trap: Thinking you’re special without earning it breeds entitlement. The world doesn’t owe you success just because you exist.

 1114.
The Victim Mentality Paradox: A ‘blame game’ mentality tied to your self-esteem keeps you trapped. Bad things happen. When your self-worth depends on others’ actions, you lose all power.

 1115.
Growth Stagnation: If feeling good is your goal, you avoid anything remotely difficult. No challenge, no growth. True progress is made in the struggle.

 1116.

 1117.
Reframing Success: The Locus of Control

 1118.
Instead of external, fluffy self-esteem, let’s talk about Internal Locus of Control. This is the belief that your actions primarily determine your outcomes. It’s NOT about ignoring external factors, but focusing your energy on where you DO have influence. This is true power.

 1119.
The Power of Personal Responsibility: Owning Your Choices Creates Agency

 1120.
Taking responsibility unlocks these game-changing benefits:

 1121.

 1122.
The Failure Advantage: When mistakes are seen as feedback to adjust (not personal indictments) you learn way faster. You become a relentless improvement machine.

 1123.
Breaking the Procrastination Loop: No more waiting for the perfect time or mood. You realize you are the driver, so you initiate action despite fear or discomfort.

 1124.
Optionality over Luck: Believing you control your choices makes you proactive. You build skills, networks, and opportunities. Luck still exists, but you make way more of your own.

 1125.

 1126.
Putting It into Practice: Building Self-Discipline & Responsibility

 1127.
Here are some concrete strategies, along with some less-common ways of thinking about them:

 1128.

 1129.
Goals as Commitments: Don’t just ‘try’ to hit targets, frame each goal as a promise you make to yourself. This raises the stakes.

 1130.
Micro-Habits as Trojan Horses: Start tiny with new habits, ridiculously tiny. Overcoming the initial inertia is the hardest part, so trick your brain into beginning.

 1131.
Temptation Audits: What derails you? Not just substances, but time-wasting apps, toxic people, etc. Ruthlessly eliminate or limit what messes with your focus.

 1132.
Seeking Regret, Not Comfort: Make choices based on the person you don’t want to become in 20 years. Minimize future regrets by taking hard action now.

 1133.
Embracing Adversity as Investment: When things go wrong, ask: “What skill is this forcing me to develop that will be valuable later?”

 1134.

 1135.
The Takeaway: Build Character, Not Fluff

 1136.
Self-esteem is like the stock market – prone to fluctuation based on things you can’t control.

 1137.
Self-discipline and responsibility are like compound interest – slow at first, unstoppable over time.

 1138.
Coach Wooden was spot on: only character ensures lasting success.

 1139.
Don’t get distracted by the mental cotton candy of endless self-love; build a truly powerful, action oriented, mindset.

 1140.
Part 2: Self-Concept vs. Self-Esteem: Who Do You Think You Are?

 1141.
Self-esteem is fleeting – it depends on good days and external praise.

 1142.
Self-concept runs much deeper.

 1143.
It’s your fundamental belief about the kind of person you are – your capabilities, traits, and identity.

 1144.
A strong self-concept isn’t about arrogance; it’s about a quiet understanding that you are capable, adaptable, and that you figure things out.

 1145.
Building Your Self-Concept: Evidence Over Affirmations: Don’t confuse positive affirmations with a strong self-concept. The latter is built on concrete evidence. Track your accomplishments, both big and small. Did you stick to your workout plan? Nailed a difficult conversation? Managed a stressful situation calmly? These become the building blocks of trust in yourself.

 1146.
The Power of “Yet”: Growth Mindset in Action: Ditch the “I’m good/bad at…” labels that leave you stuck. Add one simple word: “yet”. “I’m not great at public speaking… yet.” “I don’t understand finances… yet.” This cultivates a belief in your potential, which motivates action versus self-defeating beliefs.

 1147.
Reframing Failure: It’s Not an Indictment, It’s Data: Everyone wants success, but without failure, you won’t learn and grow. Flip the script: view mistakes not as evidence of your inadequacy, but as valuable data points. What went wrong tactically? What underlying skillset is lacking? What can be adjusted for next time? This creates a continuous improvement loop.

 1148.
The Compound Interest of Self-Belief: Small Wins Matter: Don’t undervalue small victories. Consistent successes, even seemingly minor ones, slowly rewrite your self-concept. The person who sticks to their budget this month, or finally sets boundaries with a difficult friend, is building the mental muscle of self-trust. This pays massive dividends later when tackling bigger challenges.

 1149.
Practical Applications: Internal Shifts for External Wins

 1150.
Here are some strategies to strengthen your self-concept and transform your relationship to setbacks:

 1151.

 1152.
The Accomplishments Jar: Simple but powerful. Each week, write down a few things you did that you’re proud of. When you doubt yourself, read these as reminders.

 1153.
Seek Growth-Zone Challenges: Stay in your comfort zone too long, and your self-concept stagnates. Pick one thing just slightly outside your current abilities and tackle it.

 1154.
“Failure Resumes”: Alongside your successes, list failures. Force yourself to analyze what you learned, not just how it felt. Destigmatizes the process.

 1155.
Replace Self-Criticism with Curiosity: Instead of “I’m an idiot,” ask “Why did that approach not work? How could it be done better?”

 1156.

 1157.
It’s a Practice, Not a Perfect State

 1158.
Building a strong sense of self-concept and resilience is work.

 1159.
There will be setbacks.

 1160.
What matters is that you keep choosing to see yourself as someone who solves problems, who adapts, and most importantly, who keeps showing up to the game.
