  35. <h2>Thread Milling Advantages</h2>
  36. <ul>
  37. <li><strong>Savings on tool inventory:</strong> The same cutter can be used for right-hand and left-hand threads. Threads with different diameters can be made with the same tool as long as the pitch is the same.</li>
  38. <li><strong>Precision:</strong> The CNC program and tool offsetting allows for precise control over thread size and tolerance.</li>
  39. <li><strong>Process reliability:</strong> Minimal risk for machin stops as the cutting forces are low and the chips are short.</li>
  40. <li><strong>Machine &#8220;health&#8221;</strong>: Thread milling extends machine spindle life compared to tapping because spindle rotation doesn&#8217;t need to stop and reverse every thread.</li>
  41. </ul>
  42. <p>Now that we understand the advantages, let&#8217;s delve into the machining process and CNC program.</p>
  43. <h2>The Basic Thread Milling Toolpath</h2>

  45. <p>A spiral movement is required to perform a thread milling operation. Helical interpolation is a CNC toolpath along a helical path. This spiral motion combines circular movement (G02 or G03) in the XY plane with a simultaneous linear motion in the Z direction.</p>
  46. <p>The Z distance from point A to B equals the pitch.</p>
  47. <p>The diameter machined by the tip of the cutting tool is the thread&#8217;s major diameter in internal threads or the thread&#8217;s minor diameter in external threads.</p>

  50. <h2>Tool/Thread Configuration and how it affects the program structure</h2>

  52. <li><strong>Single Tooth:</strong> In this scenario, the tool makes a continuous toolpath, completing numerous full rotations according to the thread&#8217;s length divided by the pitch. The advantages are that less load is exerted on the tool, and that the tool is cheaper. The disadvantage is that this configuration yields the longest cycle time.</li>

  56. <li><strong>Multi Tooth (Cutter length Longer than thread):</strong> This scenario has two major advantages and is the first choice except when the load can be sustained. The cycle time is the shortest, and the CNC program is the simplest. This is because the tool only needs to make a single 360° movement to complete the operation. However, it should be noted that the tool comes with a higher price tag and experiences greater loads.</li>

However, it comes with two main disadvantages. The CNC program is more complicated, and there might be a slight mismatch between iterations as the operation is not continuous.</li>

  64. <h2>Climb or Conventional milling?</h2>
  65. <p>Climb milling is typically preferred over conventional milling for machining threads due to lower cutter load, longer tool life, and better surface finish. However, there are situations where conventional milling is more appropriate.</p>
  66. <ul>
  67. <li>If the machine does not compensate for backlash, the cutting force direction in conventional milling closes the backlash gap.</li>
  68. <li>When machining cast iron or hardened materials because, the cut begins below the material&#8217;s surface.</li>
  69. </ul>
  70. <h2>CNC Program Directions</h2>
  71. <p>To determine the required directions, there are three factors to consider: handness (right or left), thread type (external or internal), and milling method (climb or conventional). Use the table below to figure out the required directions for your configuration.</p>

  73. <h2>Cutter Diameter Selection</h2>
  74. <p>Thread turning produces perfect thread geometry, while thread milling creates a slightly distorted thread geometry. The distortion is influenced by the cutter diameter, pitch, and thread diameter. A smaller cutter provides the most precise thread profile, but it must be balanced with cutter stiffness.</p>
  75. <p><strong>Internal Thread Milling:</strong></p>
  76. <ul>
  77. <li> Recommended: 50%-70% of the thread diameter.</li>
  78. <li>Never more than 85% of the pre-drilled hole.</li>
  79. </ul>
  80. <p><strong>External Thread Milling:</strong></p>
  81. <ul>
  82. <li> Recommended: 70%-100% of the thread diameter.</li>
  83. <li>If profile accuracy is not crucial, using a larger cutter can boost productivity.</li>
  84. </ul>
  85. <h2>Radial Passes</h2>
  86. <p>When the thread profile becomes deeper, it is advisable to divide the operation into several radial passes to lessen the burden on the cutter. By increasing the number of passes, you can enhance the tool life, surface quality, and production stability. However, this will also result in a slower cycle time.</p>
  87. <p>Use the table below as a starting point for the number of radial passes and adjust according to your specific application.</p>

  133. <p>In March 2024, the European Parliament adopted the EURO 7 standard. For the first time, it sets limit values for brake particle emissions for cars and light trucks. Irrespective of the drive system used, a switch to new brake technology is necessary. The most promising approach to reducing particulate matter in the braking system is currently the use of hard-coated brake discs. The friction layer consists of a soft matrix with carbides, e.g. titanium carbide. Due to the fundamentally different cutting behavior of the two materials, the design and development of suitable grinding tools and the design of the static and dynamic machine properties as well as the spindle drives is very complex. Our solution: the VLC 450 DG &#8211; a double-sided surface grinding machine for hard-coated brake discs. This machine was developed with a focus on rigidity and durability in order to meet the high requirements of batch production. The vertical design ensures optimum removal of the hard material particles without damaging the machine axes and excellent accessibility for set-up and maintenance work. Workpiece handling by means of a feed shuttle and pick-up spindle simplifies automation and offers short chip-to-chip times. The machine concept is based on decades of experience in the manufacture of vertical turning and grinding machines. An intelligent sensor concept enables adaptive process control. This makes the VLC 450 DG a reliable solution for brake disc production that meets the highest productivity levels and workpiece quality requirements. During three years of successful prototype testing, the first double-sided surface grinding machine has already processed thousands of brake discs with a wide range of geometries and coating systems. EMAG currently produces prototypes of various designs and with different coating systems on four VLC 450 DG machines, optimizing the grinding technology and the tools used.</p>
  134. <p>In particular, the energy input during laser metal deposition influences the geometry and material properties of the hard coating of brake discs and thus the relevant input variables for the grinding process. The EMAG Group offers manufacturing solutions for the entire machining chain after the brake disc casting process. The interactions between the individual manufacturing processes are specifically investigated on our own turning, laser and grinding machines.</p>

  195. <p><em>Greer, SC — </em><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><a href="http://www.walter-tools.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow external">Walter</a> </span>has introduced the A2100 boring bar/plain cylindrical shank adaptor with the QuadFit exchangeable heads for counterboring and internal profiling/copy turning. The main application areas are aerospace engines, pumps for the oil and gas industry, and general mechanical engineering.</p>
  196. <p>The boring bar is available in 40, 50 and 60-mm diameters. With a dimension of 3×D, it is suitable for machining long bores.</p>
  197. <p>Turning and boring heads are fitted on the A2100 boring bars/adaptors using the QuadFit interface for replacement of the heads. The exchangeable heads feature a precision-ground, tetrahedral polygon attachment that can be rotated 180° for use overhead. The heads have a locating face for adjusting the center height and internal coolant delivery for optimum chip removal. A clamping nut enables quick tool changes.</p>
  198. <p>Potential benefits include quick and precise tool changes of ±0.00008 in. (±0.002 mm), less non-productive time because of fast tool changes, a wide application range for all industry segments, universal use for turning operations and easy handling.</p>
  199. <p>The QuadFit interface allows quick and easy replacement of exchangeable heads, with perfect positioning and repeat accuracy. When fitting a QuadFit exchangeable head, clamp the A2100 boring bar to an assembly block or directly into the lathe tool adaptor. Ensure the tool-side and machine-side QuadFit interfaces are clean. Use the exchangeable head in the standard or overhead position. Using a calibrated torque wrench for tightening the nut is advisable to achieve the recommended tightening torque, however a standard hook wrench can be used. When removing an exchangeable head, loosen the clamping nut using a suitable wrench, but do not use a torque wrench. Hold the exchangeable head and turn the nut manually until the head can be released.</p>

  249. <p>In the final video of this series where Marc from G Code Tutor programs a complete part using G-Code on a CNC lathe. Marc shows us how to write a finish bore sequence and how to calculate the start position when turning 45-degree angles.</p>

  297. <p>Robbins started at the company in May of 2007 and was promoted to Eastern Regional Sales Manager less than a year later. As of 2019 Robbins has occupied the position of President of Autoblok’s commercial division, where he is responsible for all strategic sales and marketing initiatives as well as overseeing the company’s North America sales team. He also oversees various projects internationally. His new position as President and CEO of SMW Autoblok US was a long-anticipated appointment. Robbins has over 35 years of experience in machine tool manufacturing.</p>
  298. <p>As background, Larry Robbins’ father ran a machine tool distributorship when Robbins was young. Robbins quickly became hooked into the business after working for his dad for a short period of time. He then accepted a sales position with a modular workholding company. When that business was sold, he started his own manufacturer’s rep business (for SMW Autoblok among others), where he also created customized tooling for a wide variety of machine tool applications.</p>
  299. <p>By 2007, Robbins found his home with SMW Autoblok as a full-time employee and began to prove his broad capabilities and understanding of the machine tool industry. Even in his free time, Robbins talks about workholding equipment with friends he met through work, often stating that “his career is his passion.”</p>
  300. <p>With Robbins’ leadership, SMW Autoblok will continue to lead in the evolution of the machine tool/metalworking industry, supporting all the latest developments in automation and the increased incorporation of Industry 4.0.   332. Create individual and customized workflow for the tool, based on linked operations. Workflows and processes can be described and stored with ISA-95 compliant recipes. Job orders are transferred to production via the link to recipes and the creation of work requests. Work cells, work units and assets are managed just as easily as grinding programs and grinding wheels. AIMS Create provides the cockpit for creating processes. Thanks to the state-of-the-art web application, this can be done on almost all smart devices and computers.</p>

  356. <p>On April 17, Transform Magazine hosted their yearly event Transform Awards Europe in London, which awards excellence in rebranding and brand strategy with a focus on transformative creativity, strategy and implementation.</p>

Seco also celebrated winning two bronze awards in the categories Best Expression of a Brand on Social Media Channels and Best Brand Evolution.</p>

  381. <p>In this video, Marc from <a href="https://gcodetutor.com" data-wpel-link="external" target="_blank" rel="nofollow external">@GCodeTutor </a> shows us how to write a sequence of G-Code to both drill and rough bore using a U-Drill. Marc starts off by writing the G-Code that sets our machine in a safe working state before moving on to the drilling section. When drilling with a U-drill, we write the G-code as we would for a standard point-to-point drilling operation without using cycles. Once the hole has been drilled, we can then offset the U-drill to use it as we would a boring bar. Marc talks about the calculations we need to do to work out the offset amount to produce a bore with a finishing allowance for a later finish bore operation. To complete this sequence, we then finish writing the rest of the G-code to return our tool to a safe place, ready for the next tool change.
