43.
Infidelity and financial struggles led Colorado dentist James Craig to lace his wife's protein shakes with poison, prosecutors said on the first day of his murder trial Tuesday.

 44.

A Colorado dentist accused of lacing his wife’s protein shakes with poison did so because of financial problems and an affair with another woman, prosecutors said Tuesday on the first day of his murder trial.

 45.
James Craig, 47, allegedly used a combination of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, an ingredient found in over-the-counter eye drops, to kill his wife of 23 years, Angela Craig, in Aurora more than two years ago.

 46.
The 43-year-old victim was killed on March 18, 2023, while at a hospital to recover from previous poisonings. Craig was arrested the following day for what police called a “heinous, complex and calculated” killing and later pleaded not guilty to all charges, including first-degree murder.

 47.
At the time of her killing, Craig was allegedly having an affair with a fellow dentist. He was also experiencing financial difficulties, prosecutors told the jury Tuesday during opening arguments at the Arapahoe County District Court in Centennial, just south of Denver.

 48.
When Craig went to see his wife at the hospital in early 2023 — where she had been recovering from mysterious symptoms that had baffled doctors — he wasn’t there to help her, prosecutors said. He was there to deliver a fatal dose of poison.

 73.

A Florida man scheduled for execution Tuesday night will be the 26th person to be executed nationwide this year, marking the most death penalty sentences carried out in a single year since 2015.

 74.
Michael Bernard Bell, 54, was sentenced to death for the 1993 murders of a 23-year-old man and an 18-year-old woman outside a bar in Jacksonville.

 75.
Bell and his attorneys have made numerous legal appeals in the case, but the courts have rejected all of them. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed his death warrant in June, and the U.S. Supreme Court had not ruled on Bell’s appeal as of Tuesday afternoon.

(Florida Department of Corrections via AP)

 77.
Bell’s execution by lethal injection at a state prison in Starke will surpass 2024’s total of 25 executions nationwide. In 2015, there were 28 executions across the country, a number that is likely to be surpassed later this year.

 78.
On Dec. 9, 1993, Bell spotted a vehicle that was connected to the killing of his brother outside a bar in Jacksonville, according to authorities. He waited outside the building armed with an AK-47.

 79.
When the vehicle’s owner, Jimmy West, walked out of the club, he was with two women, one of whom was Tamecka Smith. Bell unloaded a hail of bullets, killing West and Smith while sending the second woman to the hospital.

 80.
West was not the person who killed his brother. West’s half-brother, Theodore Wright, killed Bell’s brother in what investigators determined was a case of self-defense, then gave West his car.

 81.
Bell was convicted and sentenced to death in 1995. He was later convicted of three additional murders, including the killings of a mother and her toddler son in 1989.

 97.
Kathy Bates made history with Tuesday's Emmy nominations, while Harrison Ford finally got his small-screen due.

 98.

The familiar faces amongst the 77th Emmy Award nominations are, in many cases, first-timers while others are making history for their contributions to the small screen’s latest season.

 99.
Marquee names and shows alike have milestones to celebrate after Harvey Guillén and Brenda Song announced the nominees on Tuesday for the Sept. 14 ceremony hosted by Nate Bargatze.

 100.
Below, a roundup of milestones in the latest crop of contenders:

 101.
Kathy Bates makes history as the oldest performer nominated for Lead Actress in a Drama

 102.
Kathy Bates, a 15-time Emmy nominee and two-time winner, is certainly no stranger to awards, among them an Oscar win for 1990’s “Misery” and three subsequent nods from 1999 to 2020.

 103.
But it’s the role of Madeline “Matty” Matlock in the CBS series “Matlock” — not to be confused with the original Andy Griffith-led legal drama, though it’s referenced in the remake — that snagged Bates her first Emmy nomination in nearly a decade, and at 77 years old.

 133.
Republican members of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce leveled their most pointed attacks against faculty members.

 134.

A Republican-led congressional committee grilled City University of New York Chancellor Félix Matos Rodríguez on Tuesday over rising antisemitism on its campuses, leveling their most pointed attacks against faculty members.

 135.
The CUNY leader — joined by the heads of Georgetown and UC-Berkeley — struck a conciliatory tone with the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, as he conceded the city’s sprawling university system was not immune to increased hate toward Jewish people during Israel’s deadly war in Gaza. Still, he repeatedly emphasized antisemitism has no place at CUNY.

 136.
“Although our response has not always been perfect, our commitment to this important work has never wavered,” Matos Rodríguez said.

 137.
<img decoding="async" class=" lazyautosizes lazyload" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.nydailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AP25196642300002.jpg?fit=620%2C9999px&ssl=1" sizes="1011px" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/www.nydailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AP25196642300002.jpg?fit=620%2C9999px&ssl=1 620w,https://i0.wp.com/www.nydailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AP25196642300002.jpg?fit=780%2C9999px&ssl=1 780w,https://i0.wp.com/www.nydailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AP25196642300002.jpg?fit=810%2C9999px&ssl=1 810w,https://i0.wp.com/www.nydailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AP25196642300002.jpg?fit=1280%2C9999px&ssl=1 1280w,https://i0.wp.com/www.nydailynews.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/AP25196642300002.jpg?fit=1860%2C9999px&ssl=1 1860w" alt="Dr. Félix Matos Rodríguez, Chancellor, The City University of New York, testifies during a House Committee on Education and Workforce Committee hearing on "Antisemitism in Higher Education: Examining the Role of Faculty, Funding, and Ideology" on Capitol Hill, Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Washington. 138.
The hearing, which lasted more than three hours, was the latest in a string of episodes criticized by Congressional Democrats, who have accused the committee of using the guise of combatting antisemitism to attack higher education.

 139.
While prior convenings purported to be about college presidents’ handling of antisemitic incidents, the latest hearing was billed as focused on sources of Jew hatred on university campuses. According to Tim Walberg (R-Mich.), chair of the committee, those include include faculty groups, foreign funding, and diversity, equity and inclusion policies.

 140.
In one heated exchange, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York) questioned Matos Rodríguez over CUNY CLEAR, a legal clinic representing Columbia graduate and Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil. Its founder, a professor at CUNY’s law school, is a public face of Khalil’s legal defense team and recently secured his release from ICE detention on bail.

 141.
“Is this acceptable that the legal defense fund for Mahmoud Khalil is the head of CUNY CLEAR? That’s acceptable under your watch,” Stefanik said.

 142.
Matos Rodríguez did not defend Khalil, who did not attend CUNY, or his representation at CLEAR — but said those decisions are made by clinics and on individual campuses. The congresswoman, who is expected to run for New York governor, responded, “It goes up to you. You are the chancellor.”

 143.
“I take responsibility for any behavior of our faculty,” Matos Rodríguez said.

 144.
The chancellor also attempted to distance himself from the hiring of a chief diversity officer who worked at the Council on American-Islamic Relations, the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights organization, and CUNY’s faculty union, which earlier this year narrowly passed a resolution in support of the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement against Israel. The Professional Staff Congress later voted to rescind the measure, but backlash persisted.

 145.
“The PSC does not speak for the City University of New York. We’ve been clear on our commitment against antisemitism and against BDS,” he said.

 146.
In a statement after the hearing, union president James Davis accused GOP lawmakers of using anxiety about rising antisemitism to attack higher education. Davis said PSC members and leaders have differing perspectives on Israel and Palestine, and the union does not have a position on BDS.

 147.
“The MAGA Republicans on the House Education and Workforce Committee got their facts wrong today in their attempt to smear CUNY and our union as antisemitic,” Davis said, adding that he rejected the “false premise” underlying the hearing that any pro-Palestinian campus activism is antisemitic.

 148.
Davis also lent his support to the legal clinic representing Khalil.

 149.
“All of CUNY should be proud that faculty working at our university are a part of the legal team defending our constitutional rights and the rights of Mahmoud Khalil, who was abducted for his political speech,” he added.

 150.
CUNY has been a hub of pro-Palestinian activism since before Hamas’ Oct. 7 terror attack on Israel, though the public university system has faced heightened scrutiny in its aftermath, including a state-ordered probe on campus antisemitism.

 151.
Matos Rodríguez said CUNY has “embraced the recommendations” that came from the report, including a “constructive dialogue” school initiative and a central team responding to discrimination and harassment. Across its campuses, CUNY logged 68 antisemitism complaints in 2024 and 16 so far in 2025, the chancellor testified.

 152.
Student protesters and their allies, who pitched a tent demonstration on CUNY’s Harlem campus, City College, in spring 2024, have accused the university system of conflating antisemitism with pro-Palestinian advocacy.

 153.
Rep. John Mannion (D-New York) called on House Republicans to hold those in their own party accountable and approach the issue of campus antisemitism more thoughtfully. In particular, he pointed to committee members who supported the Trump administration’s gutting of the U.S. Education Department’s civil rights office, which previously conducted anti-Jewish discrimination investigations.

 154.
“The majority of this committee are set on repeatedly singling out higher education, and attacking university presidents and labor unions that represent their faculty,” Mannion said, “while refusing to pursue serious, comprehensive solutions.”

 170.
Caitlin Clark’s previous visit to Barclays Center marked a rare low point in her young career.

 171.

Caitlin Clark’s previous visit to Barclays Center marked a rare low point in her young career.

 172.
Then a rookie, Clark managed only three points on 1-of-10 shooting in her Indiana Fever’s blowout loss to the Liberty on June 2, 2024.

 173.
“As a team, we understand who the head of the monster is on that team,” Liberty guard Sabrina Ionescu said at the time, “and we are trying to just make everything tough and difficult.”

 174.
That was the 11th game of Clark’s WNBA career, and more than a year later, it remains her lowest-scoring performance and her worst shooting effort.

 175.
Clark returns to Barclays Center for the first time since then on Wednesday night to face the Liberty under different circumstances.

 176.
The sharp-shooting phenom is a far more established player now, having lived up to the sky-high hype last season by winning Rookie of the Year and leading the Fever to their first playoff berth since 2016.

 177.
Clark’s second season has featured incredible highs, including a 32-point, nine-assist, eight-rebound eruption against the Liberty in Indianapolis on June 14 to deal the defending champions their first loss.

 178.
But this year has also come with a new set of challenges for Clark.

 179.
She missed five games with a left quad injury toward the beginning of the season, then another five due to a left groin injury.

 180.
After returning from the latter last week, Clark was averaging 12.0 points on 34.1% shooting in the three games before Tuesday night’s meeting with the Sun in Connecticut.

 181.
“I’m not worried about Caitlin’s shot,” Fever head coach Stephanie White said on Friday after Clark’s second game back from the groin injury.

 182.
“She’s recovering from injury. She plays heavy, hard minutes. Every defensive assignment, every defensive scout, she’s at the top of the scouting report, so the shot quality she’s been getting has not been great. We’re so used to seeing her make tough shots, and to be able to do that while she’s recovering from injury, it’s going to be more difficult.”

 183.
Clark’s shooting struggles go back even further, however, as she entered Tuesday shooting 29.5% from the field and 14.3% from 3-point range in her previous six games.

 184.
Perhaps the bright lights of New York will get her going.

 185.
Wednesday is set to be Clark’s third-ever game in Brooklyn and her first this season.

 186.
She is averaging 25.0 points, 9.5 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game against the Liberty this year, with the previous two matchups taking place in Indiana.

 187.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton, who was Clark’s primary defender during last season’s 1-for-10 outing, is out for the season with a knee injury, while shot-blocking Liberty center Jonquel Jones remains sidelined with an ankle injury.

 188.
ALL-STAR WEEKEND

 189.
Wednesday’s game could function as something as a preview for Friday night’s 3-point contest to kick off All-Star weekend in Indianapolis.

 190.
That’s because Ionescu and Clark are both set to compete in the event, the WNBA announced Tuesday.

 191.
Ionescu won the 3-point contest in 2023, setting a record with 37 points in the final round. This will be Clark’s first time participating.

 192.
Also set to take part are Los Angeles’ Kelsey Plum, Washington’s Sonia Citron and Atlanta’s Allisha Gray, who won the event last year.

 193.
Liberty point guard Natasha Cloud, meanwhile, is set to compete in the All-Star skills challenge, as are Gray, Minnesota’s Courtney Williams, and Seattle’s Skylar Diggins and Erica Wheeler.

 209.
Eli Manning still has a desk inside the Giants’ building, but he won’t be buying a stake in the team.

 210.

Eli Manning still has a desk inside the Giants’ building, but he won’t be buying a stake in the team.

 211.
The franchise is looking to sell up 10 percent of a minority stake in the organization. Manning, 44, the two-time Super Bowl MVP, previously had expressed interest in buying in. But he said on CNBC recently that the asking price is too high.

 212.
“The Giants one, basically it’s too expensive for me,” Manning said. “These numbers are getting big. A one percent stake of something valued at $10 billion, it turns into a very big number.

 213.
“So I love the Giants. I think it’s deserving of that valuation,” he added. “There’ll be people that will want to go for it. And I was kind of along the ride.”

 214.
Manning said there were also conflicts of interest with his current jobs, however, that further complicated his potential investment.

 215.
“It really was a matter of some complications with the fact that I’m doing broadcasting, I wouldn’t be able to talk to the players,” he said. “I coach in the Pro Bowl. I do a high school football camp where college guys come. There were gonna be a lot of conflicts, and it was gonna affect my day job.

 216.
“So I kind of had to pull out of the Giants deal,” he added. “But still obviously I’m here and have access and am still very involved in the Giants organization.”

 217.
Manning’s announcement could be good news for the Giants if the franchise indeed is fetching a $10 billion total valuation. This could also be Manning’s way of trying to help the organization fetch that number as he bows out.

 218.
The Giants, in the meantime, made some internal staff cuts this offseason with an eye on trimming down for prospective buyers.

 219.
They also retained GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll into the fourth year of their five-year contracts after a 3-14 centennial season.

 220.
Some league sources have speculated that this was in part financially motivated, since hiring a new GM and head coach while still owing Schoen and Daboll tens of millions through 2026 could have been less attractive to prospect buyers.

 221.
The NFL allowed private equity firms to buy up to 10% of teams under a new policy approved last August.

 222.
Regardless of who buys in, the team is not ceding control, which has rested with current President John Mara or his family since his grandfather, Tim Mara, founded the team in 1925.

 223.
Since 1991, the Tisch and Mara families have each owned 50% of the club, with a long list of individual family members holding small stakes. Since the passing of Wellington Mara and Bob Tisch in 2005, the team has been under the control of John Mara and Steve Tisch on behalf of their respective families.

 224.
WALLER WANTED TO PLAY, JUST NOT HERE

 225.
Darren Waller wanted to play in the NFL again – just not for the Giants.

 226.
Waller, 32, who hung up his cleats after one 2023 season in New York, un-retired to facilitate a trade to the Miami Dolphins that became official last week.

 227.
The tight end said he soured on playing football entirely in 2023 when Brian Daboll deployed him as a fullback against the Bills in a Week 6 October loss at Buffalo.

 228.
“I knew I was retiring when we played in Buffalo. It was in the first quarter of the game,” Waller said on ‘The Side You Don’t See’ podcast. “We were running this counter lead running play, and I’m kind of leading through the hole like I’m a fullback. And the play is working.

 229.
“But I sit down on the sideline after a drive where we ran it three times, and I’m like, ‘What the f— am I doing with my life? I’m out here playing fullback. I don’t even wanna do this s— anymore.’”

 230.
Waller said he was “looking at the moon” and decided “yep, I’m gonna finish this year to the best of my ability, but I’m definitely done playing after this year.”

 231.
Former Giants standout receiver Plaxico Burress said on the ‘Up On Game‘ podcast that, in his opinion, Waller didn’t want to play for Daboll.

 232.
“I think it had more to do with a lot of things he had going on outside of football, and I don’t really think he wanted to be here in New York playing for Brian Daboll,” Burress said. “I really honestly believe that. It wasn’t a good situation.”

 233.
Schoen, who traded a third-round pick to the Raiders to acquire Waller in 2023, got a 2026 sixth-round pick from the Miami Dolphins in exchange for Waller and a conditional 2027 seventh rounder.

 234.
The Giants GM continues to seek an elusive answer at tight end. He has drafted two fourth-rounders (Daniel Bellinger 2022, Theo Johnson 2024) and one seventh-rounder (Thomas Fidone, 2025) in addition to the failed Waller trade. And he’s still searching for a reliable answer at the position.

 235.
CAMP ON THE WAY

 236.
The Giants’ rookies reported to the team’s facility on Tuesday. The full team is required to report one week later on July 22. Then the team will hold its first practice of training camp on July 23.

 255.

A former correction officer at MDC Brooklyn who went corrupt about a year after taking the job has pleaded guilty to smuggling pot and cigarettes into the troubled federal jail inside his protective vest.

 256.
Najee Jackson, 32, pleaded guilty in Brooklyn Federal Court Tuesday to attempted provision of contraband in prison.

 257.
Jackson started working at MDC Brooklyn in November 2023, and on Jan. 21 of this year, he tried to sneak in the illicit goods when he showed up for his night shift.

 258.
He never got past the jail’s metal detector, which also scans for unusually dense objects, according to federal prosecutors.

 260.
He triggered the detector six times, removing his personal items, his two coats, and finally his vest, in an attempt to get past without the scanner beeping, the feds said.

 261.
When his fellow correction officers searched the vest, they found four vacuum-sealed bags, three with cigarettes, the fourth with pot.

 262.
Jackson quit two days later, and on Jan. 29, the feds arrested him.

 263.
The charge to which Jackson pleaded carries a five-year maximum sentence, but based on federal guidelines, Jackson will likely face from no time to six months.

 264.
“The defendant admitted to bringing contraband into the very jail he was charged with protecting,” Joseph Nocella, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said Tuesday. “His actions undermined the safety and security of his fellow correctional officers and the inmates at MDC Brooklyn. As today’s conviction demonstrates, my office will ensure that anyone who would abuse their position of trust at a federal prison is brought to justice.”

 265.
Contraband is a regular problem at MDC Brooklyn, which is notorious for violent incidents, including two murders last year, as well as instances of medical mistreatment, a near-constant lockdown and infested food.

 285.

“Love Island USA” contestants Iris Kendall and TJ Palma may be spinning the block on their relationship as the pair were spotted getting cozy together on Monday.

 286.
Just one day after the series finale, the reality stars reunited in Los Angeles where they were all smiles while hugging and flirting, according to video obtained by TMZ.

 287.
Sources told the outlet the two went for a walk that lasted about two hours and then went back to Palma’s place where they met up with fellow “Love Island” contestant Austin Shepard.

 288.
When Palma left the villa on the July 3 episode, Kendall coupled up with Pepe Garcia and the pair ended up being a part of the final four, eventually leaving Fiji together.

 289.
But as soon as Kendall got back to L.A., her friends dropped her off at TJ’s place, insiders told TMZ. Meanwhile, Pepe didn’t go to L.A. with the rest of the cast, but rather went to visit his parents in Orange County.

 291.
Monday’s sighting comes just weeks after Palma revealed that Kendall initially wanted to leave the villa with him after he was eliminated.

 292.
“When [I was first eliminated], she was super upset and everything. She’s like, ‘There’s nothing here for me anymore. 293.
Given her initial reaction, he admitted it was hard to see her stay in the villa and start dating someone else.

 294.
“I’m human. It’s definitely not the best,” Palma said of watching Kendall and Garcia’s relationship. “And you don’t see everything, so it always has my mind wondering.”

 297.
“I think the best thing is to have a conversation after it’s all said and done and see truly what happened … and just go from there,” he said. “It would be silly to just leave it all in the past.”

 315.

A day after his teammate and fellow 2022 draft mate, Garrett Wilson, received a contract extension, Sauce Gardner will also be a Jet long-term.

 316.
Gardner is now the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL after receiving a four-year, $120.4 million extension, sources told the Daily News.

 317.
The deal includes $85.653 million guaranteed, according to ESPN.

 318.
Gardner, 24, will average $30.1 million per season, which slightly surpasses Texans cornerback Derek Stingley Jr., who signed a three-year, $90 million extension last March. Stingley was selected a spot ahead of Gardner in the 2022 NFL Draft.

 319.
“THE DEAL IS DONE this only the beginning,” Gardner said in a post on X. “I appreciate the Jets organization for believing in me, my teammates for the blood, sweat, & tears we put in, and JETS NATION… I appreciate y’all supporting me Thank you GOD.”

 320.
Along with Wilson and pass rusher Jermaine Johnson, the Jets exercised Gardner’s fifth-year option in April, which had him under control until after the 2026 season. After extending Wilson as well, the Jets locked up both of their cornerstone players through 2030.

 321.
In previous seasons, the Jets haven’t been as proactive in signing stars to contract extensions with two years left on their deals. However, first-year general manager Darren Mougey and coach Aaron Glenn have expressed their desire to maintain the young talent they have while adding more talent to the roster.

 322.
Since the end of last season, Gardner has continued to express his desire to remain with the Jets and help turn around the franchise, which hasn’t made the playoffs since 2010.

 323.
“I wanna to win, I want to be a part of changing the organization,” Gardner said last month during mandatory minicamp. “We got a new regime with AG [Glenn] and the coaching staff he brought in. I feel like they’re doing a great job and changing the culture.”

 324.
Gardner quickly made an impact in the league after he was the first cornerback since the league merger (1970) to be named to the first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl teams during his rookie season in 2022. He was also named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year.

 325.
Gardner followed that up with another first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl campaign in 2023. However, Gardner’s play slipped last season, in which the Jets finished 5-12. He registered 49 tackles, nine pass breakups and one interception after battling a hamstring injury late in the year.

 326.
During his first two seasons in the league, Gardner averaged 66 tackles and 16 pass breakups. Opposing quarterbacks completed 56.9% of their passes and had an 86.9 passer rating when they threw Gardner’s way, according to Pro Football Reference.

 327.
“I always feel like I’ve got something to prove each and every year,” Gardner said. “I feel like I had something to prove going into the league, my first year, after my second year, after my third year, you know, and yeah, that’s just me.”

 345.
The rights to the troubled Fyre Festival brand have sold for only $245,000 in an eBay auction.

 346.

The rights to the troubled Fyre Festival brand have sold for only $245,000 in an eBay auction.

 347.
The sale included IP, brand trademarks and social media assets.

 348.
The auction received a total of 175 bids with the final bid coming in early Tuesday afternoon.

 349.
Organizer Billy McFarland announced he was selling the brand in April, roughly a week after Fyre Festival 2 was postponed indefinitely and refunds were issued.

 350.
“Damn. This sucks, it’s so low,” McFarland said during a livestream of the auction after the bids went over $240,000.

 351.
McFarland said a brand bought the rights, but did not disclose the mystery buyer.

 352.
Fyre Fest became a world-wide sensation for all the wrong reasons after its disastrous 2017 debut. The music festival promised a luxury experience in the Bahamas featuring big-name bands and A-list attendees. Instead, groups like Blink-182 canceled and ticketholders were forced to stay in flimsy disaster relief tents and eat thrown-together cheese sandwiches.

 353.
The fiasco inspired dueling streaming documentaries and a host of criminal cases.

 354.
McFarland pleaded guilty to wire fraud and other federal charges related to the festival and was released early from prison in 2022.

 355.
He resumed work on a second festival on a private island in Mexico, but that ultimately fell apart, too.

 356.
“After two years of rebuilding FYRE with honesty, creativity and relentless effort, it’s time to pass the torch,” McFarland wrote at the time on the festival’s Instagram account.

 357.
McFarland, who owes $26 million, said proceeds from the auction would go toward restituation.
