43.

After the salacious testimony of Stormy Daniels last week about what she did in the bedroom with Donald Trump in 2006 and how she got paid $130,000 a decade later to not talk about it, this week Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s prosecutors are bringing their star witness to the stand in Trump’s election interference case stemming from 2016. Federal felon Michael Cohen will explain how he helped his boss break the law.

 44.
Yes, Cohen is a crook and a liar. But Sammy “The Bull” Gravano, who confessed to having a hand in 19 murders, cooperated with the federal prosecutors to testify against John Gotti. A Manhattan jury convicted Gotti and he died in prison.

 45.
The Donald is not anyway like the Dapper Don, a murderous Mob leader, and hapless Cohen is no bloodless killer like Gravano. But like henchman Gravano, henchman Cohen knows how his boss broke the law and will testify to it.

 46.
Cohen pleaded guilty to his part in the 2016 election interference scheme to pay off Daniels. Cohen told the judge he was guilty on Aug. 21, 2018, while Trump was in the White House, having successfully hidden the $130K payments to Daniels before the November 2016 national vote. It was Cohen who wrote the check to Daniels. That payment was one of the crimes that Cohen confessed to as an illegal campaign finance violation, along with other federal tax offenses. He was sentenced to prison in an agreement and did his time.

 47.
It wasn’t a crime for Trump to have sex with Daniels in 2006 and it wasn’t a crime to pay her hush money in 2016, even using Cohen as a middleman. Trump’s crime, as charged by Bragg, was that Trump faked his business records to further the larger felony that Cohen was convicted of. That’s why Cohen is much more important to the case than Daniels. It was Cohen’s crimes that Trump aided, which would make Trump guilty as well.

 48.
So Trump’s lawyers will say that Cohen is a rat (like Gravano) and a cheat and liar and a convict (like Gravano). But Cohen’s crimes are what makes him central to this case.

 49.
It’s a shame that Bragg didn’t also pursue felony charges against Trump based on what Cohen exposed as Trump’s routine manner to lie and cheat on the valuation of his assets and holdings, hoodwinking insurers and lenders by inflating or deflating the actual numbers. There was a brewing phony valuation case assembled by his predecessor, Cy Vance, but Bragg decided against it.

 50.
It fell to state Attorney General Tish James to bring a civil suit against Trump on the bogus valuations. She won, spectacularly, with Trump fined a half billion dollars. While the standard of proof is steeper in a criminal case, Bragg should have gone for it.

 51.
As to the present case, who will the Manhattan jury believe, Trump or Cohen? When Trump ran for president in 2016 he only got 10% of the votes in Manhattan, while winning 12% in 2020. But we remember that in 2003 Cohen ran as a Republican for an East Side City Council seat against incumbent Democrat Eva Moskowitz. Cohen got creamed, but he scored 23% of the votes. Let’s hope that these dozen Manhattanites sitting in judgment also are twice as likely to side with him over Trump.

 66.

We slam New York Democrats plenty (twice last week!) on their disregard for the state Constitution, but today the rotten apples are the Republicans, who are trying to block voting by mail by wrongly claiming it is prohibited by the Constitution. It most assuredly is not, a view ratified by a trial judge and now a unanimous appellate panel. The highest court in the state, the Court of Appeals, should next reaffirm it. And then let New Yorkers of all parties vote by mail.

 67.
Like many people, we voted by mail during COVID and never want to go back. Just request the ballot online, get it delivered to your residence, fill it out at your convenience and mail it back. No need to worry about making a trip when polls are open, possible long lines of people waiting and even the weather. Voter participation goes up and representative democracy is strengthened.

 68.
More and more states are moving to vote by mail and New York should join them.

 69.
First, let us explain the difference between vote by mail and absentee voting. Vote by mail is a method of casting ballots that is open to all. Absentee voting is when a voter is unable to vote in the normal manner due to being out of town or being sick or having a disability.

 70.
Eliminating the need for a special reason for absentee voting is one way to permit everyone to get an absentee ballot. And that is what the Legislature tried to do at first in a thoroughly bipartisan effort.

 71.
In 2019, the Assembly voted 136 to 9 to put a constitutional amendment before the public to permit for universal absentee voting. The state Senate vote was 56 to 5. As we said, thoroughly bipartisan. Of 43 Republican assemblymembers, only eight voted no. Among the 24 GOP senators, only five opposed.

 72.
There was no partisan advantage, though, in fact many Republicans used to think that they had an edge among absentee voters. But in 2020, during COVID, when Donald Trump erratically started claiming that mail ballots were part of some Democratic plot (they are not, as rock-solid GOP Utah was a mail ballot pioneer), some Republicans meekly decided to follow their leader.

 73.
When the constitutional amendment was before New York voters in November 2021, the measure failed, largely because the Democratic Legislature also tried to push another very bad amendment, undermining fair redistricting. Absentee voting got weighed down and was defeated.

 74.
So the Legislature and Gov. Hochul then took the other route to the same outcome while leaving absentee voting alone and established vote by mail as another means for everyone to vote. This is exactly what the GOP-controlled Pennsylvania legislature did with a Democratic governor in 1999. The Pennsylvania constitution has the same exact wording about absentee voting as New York’s and so they created universal vote by mail.

 75.
When the Pennsylvania vote by mail law was challenged, the Pennsylvania Supreme Court let it stand as simply another to way vote, while retaining the constitution’s limits on reason for absentees.

 76.
New York now faces the same situation with the same language in our Constitution. The judges at trial and on appeal got it right. The state top court needs to agree. And then GOP should go find good candidates and run good campaigns.

 91.

Randy Mastro is a stand-up guy and good for NYC

 92.
Ancram, N.Y.: Re “Randy Mastro is a bad pick for NYC’s top lawyer” (op-ed, April 30): Unlike Charles King, I know Randy. We worked closely as deputy mayors, and I consider him among the finest public servants ever to serve New York City and a great choice to be our next corporation counsel.

 93.
When Randy and I served together, the city administration did not “cut and restrict essential services for low-income people with HIV and AIDS,” as King suggests. In fact, both of us personally advocated within the administration to maintain funding for such services and to preserve the Division of AIDS Services, and we prevailed.

 94.
As to Housing Works’ 1997 dispute with the city, Housing Works was being audited in connection with potential renewal of its multi-million-dollar contract to provide housing support for those living with HIV. It could not account for more than half a million dollars of its city funding it was supposed to have used for supportive housing, and then refused to further cooperate with the audit. As a result, under the oversight of the Human Resources Administration commissioner, Lilliam Barrios-Paoli, it was decided not to renew Housing Works’ contracts. It is true that Housing Works then sued, and the case, like so many others unfairly targeting the city as a “deep pocket,” ended up being settled years later by a subsequent administration. But King’s claim that its contract was not renewed because of its political advocacy is false.

 95.
As to King’s reference to cases Randy later handled in private practice defending landlords, I understand those were settled responsibly, ethically and honorably. Fran Reiter

 96.
Stated right

 97.
Manhattan: In your editorial on ethics in Albany (“Albany needs a real ethics cop,” May 10), you declare that the state Constitution “is the binding rulebook, not just a list of suggestions.” Much akin in wording to the federal Constitution’s Second Amendment — which the Supreme Court has determined applies to individual citizens — NYS Civil Rights Law, Article 2, Section 4(a) states: “A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms cannot be infringed.” Just saying! Paul Weiss

 98.
Cheeky tantrum

 99.
Manhattan: I belong to a well-traveled, upscale Upper West Side health club that shall remain nameless to protect the guilty. The bustling gym sometimes runs out of towels. Its entitled members sometimes use two or three. The shortage is usually quickly remedied. Recently, a member stepped out of the shower and got himself up to locker room level to find the place was out of dry towels (you might assume he used several in the shower area). The cheeky gent marched out into the crowded entry level to the front desk to noisily complain that there were no towels — as naked as a jaybird. After some ruckus, he was coached back into the locker room and by that time there were plenty of towels. The next day, he made an even bigger commotion when they wouldn’t let him back in. He just could not understand why. We suspect his mother would be sick about it. James Fragale

 100.
Modest proposal

 101.
Whiting, N.J.: The lady newscaster on Ch. 5’s “The 10 O’Clock News” frequently wears scanty party dresses for the newscast. I have to wonder why her bosses put up with her attire. The lady and her bosses apparently have no shame! If she can’t wear appropriate modest business dresses, she should be fired! John Brandenburg

 102.
Study abroad

 103.
Manhattan: Send the Columbia “for Palestine” protesting students to learn some history at Dachau (or Auschwitz, Bergen-Belsen, Treblinka or Sobibor). R.B. Brandel

 104.
Criminal complicity

 105.
San Mateo, Calif.: What does real moral leadership look like? A “no” vote on the recent House bill providing weapons to Israel. Reps. Barbara Lee and Ro Khanna came through on this, but not Nancy Pelosi, Anna Eshoo or Kevin Mullin. We commend many votes that all five representatives have cast in the past, but Israel’s war against Palestine has gone well beyond self-defense and is patently criminal. Arming Israel makes us complicit in the wanton murder of innocent Palestinians and foreign aid workers alike. It will take time for the International Court of Justice and the UN to address the crimes of Oct. 7 and Israel’s subsequent crimes, but when they do, the U.S. may easily be found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes, even genocide. Our country’s reputation requires an impartial commitment to human rights and the rule of international law, not facilitating mass murder. Mike Caggiano

 106.
Who’s in charge?

 107.
Goodyear, Ariz.: If Brandon is too old and feeble to be charged with taking Senate and vice presidential docs without legal authority, should his caretaker (Dr. Jill) be held responsible? The immediate response from libs will be no, but his caretaker had to be involved with a ghostwriter for the lovely couple to get an $8 million check for his memoirs (as if he knows what those are!). If Dr. Jill approved the $8 million contract knowing Brandon was not capable of understanding it, isn’t she complicit in a transaction that was illegal given the documents were taken illegally (as a senator and VP) and her spouse is not of sound mind? Dr. Jill should tell the DNC her husband’s real cognitive condition! Peter Provenzale

 108.
Just bluster

 109.
Bronx: Ex-President Donald Trump is again using his old “on Day One” speech. Let’s see what he accomplished on his previous Day One in 2017. He would build an impenetrable wall that Mexico would pay for (not), deport 11 million “criminal aliens” (not), end gun-free zones (not), give us much better health insurance and get rid of Obamacare (not). If elected again, he will be a dictator on Day One only (yeah, sure); he will roll back protections of LGBTQ citizens (Title IX) and continue to take away a woman’s freedom to choose her medical care (hopefully not). I guess his Day One promises are a failure. Hopefully, he won’t get a chance to say it again on Jan. 20, 2025. Lydia Milnar

 110.
That’s rich

 111.
Brooklyn: I want to thank Voicer Luana Dunn for the laugh of the day. I was happy to finish Saturday’s letters with yours. I haven’t laughed that much in a long time. Trump’s the victim? Just way too funny. What a sense a humor you have. I’m still laughing. Greg Ahl

 112.
Outta his element

 113.
Linden, N.J.: To Voicer Diane Pagen: Would you let an environmental lawyer perform an operation on you? Would you fly in a plane flown by one? No? Then why do you trust an environmental lawyer to be president of the United States? RFK Jr. has absolutely no political experience. He has never held office. So his only resemblance to his illustrious father would seem to be his name. He had even seriously considered making a football player his vice president! As it is, he has picked a running mate who also has no political experience. Ron Jackowski

 114.
Driven out

 115.
Brooklyn: As Voicer Lee Rottenberg correctly points out, “The goal of congestion pricing is to cut traffic in Manhattan.” However, if the city reduces the number of cars on the road while reducing these same roads to bike lanes, we will be gouged with “the same congestion as we had before,” coupled with tolls. The government’s goal seems to be to drive cars out of the city. There are lower-income New Yorkers who have to drive for work and disabled residents for whom neither public transportation nor bicycling are feasible. Notwithstanding the out-of-towners, who will be paying more than us to enter the toll zones? Despite concerns from various stakeholders, the MTA is going full speed ahead with congestion pricing as planned. It’ll take a village to stop this. Or, at the very least, Lee Rottenberg of Middle Village. Howard Jay Meyer

 116.
Spend wisely

 117.
Brooklyn: Why do we need the Second Ave. subway that is already serviceable by MTA buses? Improve safety and security on the existing subways and bus lines. Stop wasting MTA funds! John Corbett

However, pleasant Venus ultimately sextiles steady Saturn, guiding us toward balance. When we take a moderate path, change doesn’t have to set off alarm bells.

 137.

 138.
Aries

 139.
March 21 – April 19

 140.
A financial decision you make today has the potential to surprise others — and maybe even you. Perhaps it’s better thought out than it appears, though. You could be exploring an approach that’s different from the way you were raised, and it’s understandable if this incites anxiety. You must decide how much upheaval you’re personally able to live with. Keep in mind that you’re in control of the process, so you can (and should) stop if it becomes unbearable for you.

 141.

 142.

 143.
Taurus

 144.
April 20 – May 20

 145.
Announcing that something has changed in your personal life might be necessary at any moment. As the prominent Sun meets shocking Uranus in your sign, you’re possibly apprehensive about becoming the center of attention in a disruptive way. Thankfully, leaning on your most grounded friends can cushion the blow. They’re likely still committed to you regardless of whatever happened. Don’t look for the worst in any comments they make — they’re probably trying to help, even if their phrasing is a little awkward.

 146.

 147.

 148.
Gemini

 149.
May 21 – June 20

 150.
You could be aware of a lot of excitement going on behind the scenes at the moment. Perhaps you wish that the developing news you’ve got your eye on would hurry up and become public — it may have the potential to improve your finances, which can then raise your standing within your social network. Stay aware of the ways casual talk can escalate beyond what you intend! Play it safe by focusing on what you’re able to say without bending any rules.

 151.

 152.

 153.
Cancer

 154.
June 21 – July 22

 155.
Your friends could be just the role models you need at this time. Maybe you’re attracted to a unique idea, but you also don’t want to abandon a political or spiritual viewpoint that has shaped you. Although your philosophical commitment is potentially a big part of your identity, some adjustments can actually give you space to live better in line with your values. Look at how others have handled similar challenges, and don’t be afraid to imitate any strategies that seem to be working well.

 156.

 157.

 158.
Leo

 159.
July 23 – August 22

 160.
Seizing the reins might seem necessary today. As the potent Sun conjoins liberating Uranus in your authoritative 10th house, your frustration with a fussy power structure that never gets anything done could boil over. Perhaps your reaction will only be unexpected to those who haven’t been paying attention to the situation — tension has likely been brewing for a while. A key person may secretly approve of your approach, even if they don’t say so out loud. Don’t fear the fallout too much.

 161.

 162.

 163.
Virgo

 164.
August 23 – September 22

 165.
Wild ideas are more likely than usual to grab your attention. Sharing them with someone else could be even more exciting! Your confidant might not be as into your latest brainstorm as you are, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing in the long run. If you can get past your initial disappointment, any criticisms they make may turn out to be useful food for thought. You don’t have to admit that right away, though — work toward clarity in private first.

 166.

 167.

 168.
Libra

 169.
September 23 – October 22

 170.
An unconventional alliance is presently possible. While the friendly Sun unites with bizarre Uranus in your 8th House of Collaboration, you may find yourself joining forces with someone who typically disagrees with you on major issues. The arrangement can work on a practical level — it’s possible that you want the same things, even if you want them for very different reasons. For now, focus on working with your unexpected companion instead of attempting to convince your usual team that this is a good idea.

 171.

 172.

 173.
Scorpio

 174.
October 23 – November 21

 175.
Someone in your life might seem unstable at the moment, but maybe they’re at least fun. As the passionate Sun joins forces with chaotic Uranus in your relationship zone, you could genuinely enjoy getting swept along with whatever adventure your companion is providing for you! It’s probably more interesting than sticking to your normal routine. Still, you don’t have to surrender responsibility altogether. For a truly transformative experience, consider contributing a few of your ideas to keep the excitement going longer.

 176.

 177.

 178.
Sagittarius

 179.
November 22 – December 21

 180.
Changing your daily routine might be necessary at present. The current needs of someone you live with could be blocking you from carrying out your usual habits. Even if you wouldn’t have chosen the way the situation came about, you may eventually benefit from the opportunity to rethink things. It’s okay to embrace whatever flows easily — the point is to get what’s truly important done, not to prove to the world that you’re being productive every second of the day.

 181.

 182.

 183.
Capricorn

 184.
December 22 – January 19

 185.
Your desire for pleasure could be taking on renewed urgency. It’s not necessary to spend a lot of time explaining this longing to the people around you. Trying to talk your way into a consensus regarding something fun to do together may lead you even further from fulfillment. While the energetic Sun meets electric Uranus in your playful 5th house, you might as well just follow your bliss. Your enthusiasm is likely to be contagious, and that should attract all the companionship you desire!

 186.

 187.

 188.
Aquarius

 189.
January 20 – February 18

 190.
Something you believe you need for security could be taken away from you without warning. If you sense a change like this is brewing, you’re better off accepting it than trying to fight it. It’s true that you can’t guarantee exactly what will happen next. Maybe whatever you lost will be quickly replaced with a superior alternative — or maybe resolution won’t immediately appear. Either way, relying on your personal resources can help you ride out the disruption. You are stronger than you think!

 191.

 192.

 193.
Pisces

 194.
February 19 – March 20

 195.
Saying something people wouldn’t expect is possible. Still, your grounded attitude can potentially convince your audience to take you seriously. Your initial motivation might involve a desire to express yourself and live in line with your values. Having those longings is fine, but whatever you choose to do with them ultimately has to function in the real world. Pin down the practical details of your big idea before you start demanding others give you a chance to advance it to the next level.

 212.

The controlled demolition of what’s left of the Francis Scott Key Bridge has been postponed until Monday due to adverse weather conditions, the U.S. Coast Guard said Sunday.

 213.
Initially it was supposed to happen Saturday, but the threat of poor weather got it pushed until Sunday. Predictions of lightning and rising tides that would make the operation dangerous forced another postponement, and it’s now slated to take place at 5 p.m. Monday.

 214.
Crews plan to break down the 500-foot-long, 600-ton bridge using a series of explosives they have been putting in place for weeks. The “precision cuts made with small charges” will split the span into sections that are more easily removable by cranes and barges, Key Bridge Response Unified Command said in a statement last week.

 215.
The part to be demolished lies atop the container ship Dali, which lost power and slammed into a bridge support column on March 26. The crew has been aboard the vessel since then and will remain there in a secure location during the demolition, officials said.

 216.
Six construction workers who were on the bridge at the time died, and the last body was recovered on Tuesday.

 217.
“Whenever there’s a lightning strike in the area, that pushes the clock back, and so that clock just kept getting pushed back and pushed back,” coast guard spokesman Nick Ameen told reporters Sunday, according to CNN.

 234.

The first recipient of a genetically modified pig kidney has died after two months, though not necessarily from the transplant.

 235.
Richard “Rick” Slayman, 62, received the organ at Massachusetts General Hospital in March, with surgeons predicting it would last two years.

 236.
Both the hospital and Slayman’s family praised his optimism and his desire to help people by undergoing the procedure.

 237.
“Our family is deeply saddened about the sudden passing of our beloved Rick but take great comfort knowing he inspired so many,” his family said in a Saturday statement.

 238.
“After his transplant, Rick said that one of the reasons he underwent this procedure was to provide hope for the thousands of people who need a transplant to survive. Rick accomplished that goal, and his hope and optimism will endure forever.”

 239.
While Slayman was the first living recipient of a pig kidney, was preceded by two brain-dead donors into whom doctors temporarily transplanted pig kidneys. Two men who received pig-heart transplants died months after their respective procedures.

 240.
Doctors at Mass General said there was no indication that Slayman died from the transplant itself. He underwent a traditional kidney transplant in 2018, but it began failing last year and he was back on dialysis, with complications developing. So his doctors suggested the pig kidney as an option.

 241.
“The Mass General transplant team is deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Mr. Rick Slayman,” his surgical team said in a statement. “We have no indication that it was the result of his recent transplant. Mr. Slayman will forever be seen as a beacon of hope to countless transplant patients worldwide, and we are deeply grateful for his trust and willingness to advance the field of xenotransplantation.”

 260.

Brandon Nimmo wasn’t even supposed to play Sunday night. The outfielder tweaked his right side the night prior and manager Carlos Mendoza told him to take the day off. But Nimmo protested, insisting that he was able to play, going through several tests to show the coaches and trainers that he could play and, finally, summoning Mendoza to the batting cage to watch him swing without pain.

 261.
Mendoza relented, agreeing to use him off the bench if needed.

 262.
It’s a good thing he did.

 263.
Nimmo teed off on left-hander A.J. Minter (5-3) with one on and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning to help the Mets walk off with a 4-3 win over the Braves and avoid a sweep.

 264.
If Nimmo’s intercostal was still sore during that at-bat, you couldn’t tell.

 265.
“I don’t really feel anything right now,” Nimmo said. “I’m kind of coming off the adrenaline high, so I definitely didn’t feel anything for that at bat.”

 266.
Jeff McNeil led off with a bunt single and was moved over to second by Tomas Nido. On the sixth pitch of the at-bat, Nimmo connected on a cutter from Minter, sending it into the visitor’s bullpen. A night after nearly being no-hit, the Mets dug in and refused to be swept.

 267.
“We needed this one,” McNeil said. “We’re grinding. Everyone was team is grinding right now. So we’ll take any win where we can get it, and this is a big one.”

 268.
Mendoza was also ready to dig in and refuse Nimmo’s pleas to play. The manager didn’t want to risk further aggravating an injury when they were lucky enough to catch it early. A strained intercostal or oblique could lead to a lengthy injured list stint and Nimmo already has a history of muscle injuries.

 269.
But a trainer came out during batting practice and told Mendoza that Nimmo looked good swinging a bat in the cages. The outfielder had already passed a core test; swinging a bat was the last test he needed to pass. Mendoza watched him swing without favoring his right side.

 270.
“He came and watched me hit and he goes, ‘OK, you look like you’re moving pretty well.’ And I was like, ‘I feel good, so let’s have a conversation,'” Nimmo said. “So he went and talked with the trainer, Joe [Golia], and he said, ‘Hey, later in the game, what do you think?’ And I said, ‘If you need me, let’s do it.'”

 271.
Mendoza trusted Nimmo.

 272.
“It wasn’t an easy decision,” Mendoza said. “I said, ‘Hey, honestly, I’m not going to change my mind. But be ready from the fifth inning on.'”

 273.
DJ Stewart went 2-for-3 with a run batting from the leadoff spot for the first time this season in place of Nimmo, Pete Alonso went 2-for-4 with two RBI doubles and Francisco Lindor had two hits and scored a run.

 274.
Alonso’s two doubles came off right-handed Braves starter Bryce Elder. He doubled home Stewart in the third to tie the game at 1-1. After Atlanta went ahead 2-1 in the sixth, Lindor doubled off Elder to lead off and Alonso sent him home with a double to right-center field to tie the game at 2-2.

 275.
Elder allowed two earned runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings before being removed with one out in the sixth and Alonso at second. McNeil grounded out against left-hander Aaron Bummer to strand the runners. The Mets would strand runners in the seventh as well, while Atlanta went ahead in the eighth.

 276.
Zack Short grew up a Mets fan and realized a dream when he was named to the team’s Opening Day roster. But Sunday at Citi Field, the utility infielder scored both runs for the Braves, driven in by Marcel Ozuna both times. The first run was charged to right-hander Severino, who pitched well enough to give the Mets a chance to win.

 277.
Right-hander Adam Ottavino gave up the second single to Ozuna. After a stretch of nine straight appearances without an earned run, Ottavino has allowed four in his last four outings.

 278.
Severino pitched into the sixth inning, holding the Braves (24-13) to two earned runs on four hits, walking three and striking out four. He didn’t have his best stuff, but the damage was minimal.

 279.
“Every time you face a team like this and limit them to a couple runs, I think it’s huge,” Severino said. “We’re very good and I feel more confidence in myself.”

 280.
Edwin Diaz kept the game to within one run with a scoreless ninth to earn the win (1-1).

 281.
“Obviously, the Braves are a great team. We know that,” Nimmo said. But if you want to be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.”

 282.
The Mets (19-20) are in a stretch of 10 straight games against divisional opponents and a sweep this weekend dropped them below the Washington Nationals to put them in fourth place. They have a chance to beat the best and pick up some valuable wins this week with four games against the NL East-leading Philadelphia Phillies, starting Monday.

 299.

A decomposing body was discovered in a patch of bushes in front of a Queens apartment building Sunday.

 300.
Police were called to the building on Queens Blvd. near 62nd Ave. in Rego Park just before 12:55 p.m. after residents reported a foul odor.

 301.
“It smelled for at least two weeks,” said one resident, who did not provide her name. “It got a little stronger, maybe because it got warmer.”

 302.
The person’s body was found in bushes underneath scaffolding and was so badly decomposed, it was not immediately clear if it was a man or a woman.

 303.
“I could smell it just passing by, I was thinking it was a dead rat or something like that,” said a resident who only identified himself as Jerry. “I’ve been in this building 27 years and I’ve never seen something like that.”

 304.
The city Medical Examiner will determine how the person died.

 319.
The Atlanta Hawks came in facing slim odds. They walked away with their biggest victory in years.

 320.

CHICAGO — The Atlanta Hawks came in facing slim odds. They walked away with their biggest victory in years.

 321.
The Hawks won the NBA draft lottery on Sunday, landing the No. 1 pick and a potential cornerstone player in a year where there’s no clear-cut choice.

 322.
“At least I can go home and tell my wife on Mother’s Day, ‘Hey, at least we won the lottery,'” general manager Landry Fields said. “That’s her present. Yeah, there we go.”

 323.
The Hawks hit the jackpot despite just 3% odds after finishing 10th in the Eastern Conference at 36-46. They dropped their final six regular-season games and lost to the Chicago Bulls in the first round of the play-in tournament.

 324.
“It was a shock,” said Fields, who grinned ear to ear when deputy commissioner Mark Tatum announced the Hawks as the winners. “When I first saw that it wasn’t us between 10 and 12, that launched us into the top four. I was like, all right, we’ve got a real shot at this thing. A bit of surprise, but a lot of excitement.”

 325.
The Hawks haven’t won a postseason series since a surprising run to the Eastern Conference finals in 2021. They got knocked out in the first round in 2022 and 2023.

 326.
Atlanta has some big decisions to make this offseason, including whether to break up its backcourt of Trae Young and Dejounte Murray. Fields can build with the No. 1 pick — assuming he keeps it — though it’s not clear who will be taken first after Victor Wembanyama was the obvious choice for San Antonio last year.

 327.
“Our group has been fantastic,” Fields said. “There’s a whole lot of trust. They’ve put in the work. We’ll kind of lean into our process and take it from there.”

 328.
Washington, Houston, San Antonio and Detroit rounded out the top five. The draft is June 26-27 in Brooklyn.

 329.
Houston coach Ime Udoka was thrilled to get the third pick after the Rockets went 41-41 and missed the playoffs for the fourth straight year.

 330.
“Pleasant surprise when you move up the way that we did,” he said. “I feel like there’s a lot of qualified candidates out there.”

 331.
Washington and Detroit had the best chances to land the top pick at 14%. Only four teams have won the lottery with slimmer odds than Atlanta, with the biggest longshot being Orlando at 1.52% in 1993. The Magic orchestrated a blockbuster draft night trade with Golden State, sending the rights to Chris Webber to the Warriors for the rights to Penny Hardaway along with three future first-round picks.

 332.
San Antonio landed a generational player last year in Wembanyama. The franchise that previously took David Robinson and Tim Duncan with the No. 1 overall pick got its next great big man, and all the Frenchman did was turn in one of the best rookie seasons in NBA history.

 333.
Fields disputed the idea that this year’s class is a weak one, saying there are future All-Stars.

 334.
“Every draft class has great players in it,” he said.

 335.
The No. 1 pick could once again come from France, whether it’s center Alex Sarr or sharp-shooting forward Zaccharie Risacher, but that’s far from a certainty. UConn guard Stephon Castle and Kentucky’s Reed Sheppard and Rob Dillingham are both expected to be off the board within the first few selections.

 336.
The 7-foot-1, 224-pound Sarr has the size and mobility that teams crave and can defend the perimeter when he’s not blocking shots down low. The 19-year-old from Toulouse is known for his explosiveness around the rim, though he could use some more muscle. It would help, too, if he developed into a more reliable 3-point shooter.

 337.
Sarr, whose brother Olivier plays for the Oklahoma City, spent this past season in Australia’s National Basketball League.

 338.
Risacher, who was born in Spain and grew up in France, is known as a dynamic, albeit streaky shooter for JL Bourg, whether he’s popping off screens or pulling up for 3-pointers. He often guards the other team’s best player.

 339.
Castle joined Andre Drummond in 2012 as UConn’s only one-and-done players when he declared for the draft in April after the Huskies’ latest NCAA championship run. The 6-foot-6 guard averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists while often drawing the defensive assignment to shut down the opposition’s top perimeter player.

 340.
Sheppard and Dillingham both came off the bench in their lone college seasons.

 341.
Sheppard, who was voted the Southeastern Conference’s top freshman by coaches, was one of the league’s best playmakers and perimeter shooters. He was Kentucky’s No. 3 scorer at 12.5 points per contest and averaged an SEC-best 2.5 steals that ranked eighth nationally, despite starting just five of 33 games.

 342.
Dillingham was voted the SEC’s top sixth man after averaging 15.2 and 3.9 assists. Kentucky tied for second in the conference and earned a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, only to get knocked out by Oakland in the round of 64. Coach John Calipari then left after 15 years for Arkansas.

 360.
As if he were following a script, Jones homered on the second pitch he saw from Rays starter Tyler Alexander. The solo homer, the first of Jones’ career, just cleared the left field wall at 383 feet, though it traveled at 109.5 mph.

 361.

TAMPA – As reporters filed into Aaron Boone’s office, blaring music, raucous screams and boisterous chants could be heard behind a closed door.

 362.
The Yankees usually celebrate when they win, which they did with a 10-6 victory over the Rays on Sunday. Yet this party sounded different.

 363.
“They’re excited for Jam Jones,” explained Boone, genuinely touched.

 364.
Jam, a.k.a. Jahmai Jones, hasn’t played much this year. He had logged just one start, six plate appearances and 20 innings in the field before batting ninth and playing left on Sunday with Alex Verdugo getting a day off.

 365.
Boone said he’s “unfairly” pinned the utility man to the bench, but not because of his bat.

 366.
“This guy can hit,” Boone insisted before the game. “He can pop the ball. I haven’t really given him a lot opportunities yet, but I like the way he swings the bat.”

 367.
As if he were following a script, Jones homered on the second pitch he saw from Rays starter Tyler Alexander. The solo homer, the first of Jones’ career, just cleared the left field wall at 383 feet, though it traveled at 109.5 mph.

 368.
“[Bench coach Brad] Ausmus, right before, goes, ‘He’s going deep today. I don’t know if it’s this at-bat, but he’s going deep,'” Boone recalled. “And bam!”

 369.

 370.
1st Big League homer for Jahmai Jones

 371.
We see you, dawg! pic.twitter.com/awQdcIWC7A

 372.
— New York Yankees (@Yankees) May 12, 2024

 373.

 374.
Boone added that teammates “love” the hard-working Jones. That certainly showed after the home run.

 375.
As the utility man circled the bases, Yankees pitchers could be seen cheering for him in the bullpen before more teammates mobbed the ecstatic 26-year-old in the dugout. Then came the postgame beer shower, the smell of which still lingered as reporters talked to the effervescent Jones.

 376.
“It was awesome,” he said. “Everything you could imagine and more. Everybody rallying around you.”

 377.
Jones added that he traded a bat and some batting gloves for his home run ball.

 378.
“I’m okay with that,” he said. “I’ll trade a lot more than that.”

 379.
Any player would say that after hitting the first home run of their career, but Jones launched his on Mother’s Day. That made the moment all the more emotional.

 380.
“It’s a special one,” said Jones, who debuted in 2020, underwent Tommy John surgery in 2022, and was claimed by the Yankees in the spring. “Obviously, getting to be in the lineup with the Yankees is special in itself, but doing it on Mother’s Days is something I’ll never forget. My mom means a lot to me, and we’ve been through a lot together. To do it on this day, I can’t really put it into words.”

 381.
When asked what he could share about his and his mom’s journey, Jones said that his father, Andre, died of a brain aneurysm before the ballplayer began his freshman year of high school.

 382.
A former linebacker, Andre played college football at Notre Dame and spent time with the Steelers and Lions before his abrupt death in 2011.

 383.
“It was kind of sudden,” Jones said. “Just woke up one morning and had to put him in a hospital.”

 384.
Not even 14 and left without a father, Jones and his five siblings leaned heavily on their mom, Michele, at home in Georgia.

 385.
“Going through that, she had to take a lot of different things on to keep everything as normal as it could be,” Jones said. “Without her, I wouldn’t be here, for sure.”

 386.
Jones said that he already had a text waiting from his mom when he got back to the Yankees’ locker room, and he couldn’t wait to call her after the game. She, too, felt it was special that her son hit his first home run on Mother’s Day.

 387.
So did Jones’ teammates, who were eager to rage with him after the game.

 388.
“All the guys were excited for him,” said Jose Trevino, who homered twice on Sunday. “Every day he comes in, handles his business. He grinds every single day to just be ready for that one moment.”

 389.
Added Gleyber Torres, whose three-run homer gave the Yankees some breathing room after a bullpen implosion: “There’s nothing better than to hit your first homer, especially on Mother’s Day.

 390.
“It’s beautiful. That’s the beautiful part of playing baseball.”

 391.
Meanwhile, Boone said that Jones “works his tail off,” stays “prepared for anything” and never complains about his playing time.

 392.
“He brings the same energy to the field every single day,” Boone said. “You go through a long season, you don’t want energy suckers. You want people that give energy each and every day, and he does that. He’s accepted his role. He works hard. He’s ready at any moment for any situation, and it’s exciting to be able to get him in there today and have him deliver like he did. I know the boys appreciate that.”

 393.
The feeling is mutual, as Jones raved about the support he’s received from “every single person” in the Yankees’ locker room.

 394.
“I’ve had multiple conversations with everybody about different things, and the culmination of that just speaks to the culture that’s in here,” Jones said. “It’s something that’s special and something that I think is going to really pay dividends down the stretch.”

 395.
A second-round pick of the Angels in 2015, Jones has had a hard time living up to his draft status. But he’s managed to stick around with the Yankees after limited stints with the Angels, Orioles and Brewers.

 396.
Multiple injuries to the Yankees’ infield depth have made that possible, but playing time has still been scarce. Still, Jones has embraced his role while remaining wide-eyed and positive, his default attitude after experiencing hardship as a teen.

 397.
“It’s kind of hard to have a bad day. I love it, man. I love baseball. I love being a part of this team. We’re winning, and that’s all that matters,” Jones said. “As long as the team’s winning, you’re never going to not see me smiling.”
