17. <dc:content>
On 14 May, VMware disclosed a series of security vulnerabilities in the two hypervisor solutions, providing workarounds and warning customers to patch their systems as soon as possible.

  18.
The first and most serious of these was CVE-2024-22267, a critical use-after-free vulnerability in the products’ vbluetooth device. The flaw has a CVSS rating of 9.3, the company revealed.

  19.
VMware warned that a hacker with local administrative privileges on a virtual machine could exploit the flaw to execute code as the virtual machine’s VMX process running on the host.

  20.
The second security issue, CVE-2024-22268, is a heap buffer-overflow vulnerability affecting the Shader functionality in Workstation and Fusion, rated 7.1 on the CVSS.

  21.
If exploited correctly, the flaw could give an unauthorized actor with access to a VM with 3D graphics enabled the ability to force the target system into a denial of service (DoS) condition.

  22.
Also rated 7.1 on the CVSS, VMware disclosed another high-severity vulnerability – CVE-2024-22269 – which is an information disclosure flaw in the bluetooth device that could allow an attacker with admin privileges on a VM to read sensitive information contained in the hypervisor memory.

  23.
Finally, CVE-2024-22270, is another information disclosure vulnerability with a 7.1 CVSS rating that could give attackers access to information in the hypervisor memory, this time in Workstation and Fusion’s host guest file sharing (HGFS) functionality.

  24.
Not the best timing for VMware

  25.
The day before it warned customers of the security problems affecting the two hypervisor products, VMware also announced it would be making Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro free for personal use.

  26.
Workstation Pro is VMware’s hypervisor solution for Windows and Linux devices, whereas Fusion covers customers using Mac systems.

  27.
They allow users to build ‘local virtual’ environments to install a variety of operating systems (OS) to build and test software.

  28.
The move has been touted as a gesture of goodwill by Broadcom amidst continued controversy over changes made since its acquisition of the firm last year.

  29.
The acquisition has received stern criticism from various stakeholders due to Broadcom’s decision to overhaul the licensing structure for many of VMware’s most popular products.

  30.
Shortly after the acquisition in November 2023, Broadcom wasted no time announcing it would be axing over 50 standalone cloud services from VMware, including its popular Aria SaaS offering.

  31.
With its Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro announcement, VMware said the motivation behind the move was to “simplify how we bring VMware Desktop Hypervisor apps to market”, while ensuring both free and paid users received regular support and maintenance.

  32.
Enterprise users will find VMware has reduced its product group offerings down to a single stock keeping unit (SKU) for users who need licensing for commercial use. This simplification will eliminate over 40 other SKUs which VMware hopes will make quoting and purchasing their desktop hypervisor apps easier than ever.

  50. <dc:content>
Slack has responded to confusion and concern over the use of customer data for AI model training, insisting that its practices do not include user message content.

  51.
Last week, claims circulated online that the productivity platform, which has its own integrated ‘Slack AI’ service, was using customer data - including internal company communications - as training materials.

  52.
A spokesperson for Salesforce, which owns Slack, told ITPro it has since updated the language of its policy to better reflect its position on using organizational data for training purposes.

  53.
According to the firm’s policies, Slack uses some customer data to develop “non-generative AI/ML models” that support various features such as emojis or channel recommendations.

  54.
If organizations don’t want their data used in training “Slack global models”, then they can opt-out, meaning their data will only be used to improve the experience on their “own workspace”.

  55.
Slack users say its ‘opt-out’ approach doesn’t cut it

  56.
This has still prompted consternation among users, however. What many have taken issue with is the fact that this requires a proactive move on behalf of the organization, rather than Slack opting users out by default or making users perform a much clearer declaration of their desire to opt in.

  57.
Instead, an organization must contact Slack’s customer experience team with an opt-out request email, after which point the firm will “process your request and respond once the opt-out has been completed”.

  58.
Initial responses to this policy were fiercely critical and Slack quickly faced backlash from a variety of sources, including many users on the Hacker News forum.

  59.
One user questioned why such a policy was opt-out and why it needed to be discovered, claiming that their company was “discussing switching to Teams” in an act of retaliation. Another user called it an “incredible rug pull” from the firm.

  60.
Engineer and writer Gergely Orosz also took to social media to criticize Slack with claims it was treating paying customers as a product.

  61.
“It’s unacceptable that this is automatic opt-in, and paying organizations are not opted out by default,” Orosz said.

  62.
Slack responded to Orosz, saying that the firm has “platform-level machine learning models for things like channel and emoji recommendations and search results” but that customers are able to exclude their data from it.

  63.
One staff member at Slack, Aaron Maurer, responded to Orosz and admitted that “we do need to update this particular page to explain more carefully how these privacy principles play with Slack AI”.

Slack has since done this in a company blog post.

  64.
“We recently heard from some in the Slack community that our published privacy principles weren’t clear enough and could create misunderstandings about how we use customer data in Slack … as we looked at the language on our website, we realized that they were right,” the company said.

  65.
The firm stated that its traditional machine learning models use de-identified, aggregate data and do not access message content in “DMs, private channels, or public channels”.

  66.
A Salesforce spokesperson referred ITPro to this blog post while also reiterating some of the post’s key points, highlighting that Slack’s platforms are not trained on user message content.

  67.
“Slack has industry-standard platform-level machine learning models to make the product experience better for customers … these models do not access original message content in DMs, private channels, or public channels to make these suggestions,” the spokesperson said.

  68.
“We do not build or train these models in such a way that they could learn, memorize, or be able to reproduce customer data."

  69.
They added that while it also uses third-party LLMs, these are not trained with customer data and that “off-the-shelf” models used by the firm are hosted in its own AWS environment to ensure security.

  87. <dc:content>
Welcome to ITPro’s live coverage of Dell Technologies World 2024, coming to you the from the Venetian Resort, Las Vegas.

For a look at what today might see announced this week, read our pre-conference coverage on what we expect from Dell Technologies World 2024.

  88.
Good morning from Las Vegas. The opening keynote here at Dell Technologies World is a few hours away, and due to kick off at 10am PT. We can expect to hear lots about AI and infrastructure, with a scheduled appearance from the likes of Jensen Huang, CEO at Nvidia.

  89.
Just under three hours to go until the conference kicks off with today's keynote led by Michael Dell, CEO, chairman, and co-founder of Dell Technologies. The floor is already buzzing with attendees here at the Venetian – along with an Elvis impersonator – and the energy is only going to increase.

  90.
AI is set to be one of the main topics of today's keynote and this is reflected in the visuals currently shown on the Las Vegas Sphere:

  91.

  92.
All night ahead of the conference, the Sphere has been cycling through animations related to Dell Technologies World 2024, as shown in the header image for this live blog.

  93.
Dell is in an interesting spot with regards to AI, as it's leaned heavily on its existing infrastructure and partnerships with the likes of Nvidia. It's clear that this is set to continue throughout this year's event, with Dell having announced its own AI Factory with Nvidia at this year's Nvidia GTC conference – something the company is certain to follow-up on on its home turf.

Today's keynote teases announcements that will help customers "transform your greatest ideas into action with AI, Multicloud, Edge, and more," with representatives from relevant firms such as Nvidia's Jensen Huang and Sungwoo Hwang, president and CEO at Samsung SDS joining Dell on stage to explain more.

  94.
Any further detail Dell can give on lightweight LLMs – critical to its approach of bringing AI to the edge, including potentially AI on business laptops – will be key here.

  95.
We'll be bringing you the latest news as it comes, so don't go anywhere.

  96.
We're in the keynote arena, which is filling up quickly. As is tech conference tradition, the soundtrack right now is an upbeat DJ set – the current song is a trance beat remix of Livin' on a Prayer.

  97.

  98.
The era of AI

  99.
And we're off, beginning with a video montage recapping Dell's year in the industry leaning heavily on AI with a montage based around the phrase "Make it X" e.g. "Make it creative", "make it sustainable".

  100.
Here to run us through all of this and more is Michael Dell, founder, chairman and CEO, Dell Technologies.

"We are thrilled to bring you some of the leading voices in technology today," Dell begins, along with a promise of real customer stories. This ties into Dell's stated goal in its keynote descriptions – namely, showing the concrete benefits of AI.

  101.
Celebrating 40 years of Dell, we're told, and Dell runs us through all the advancements of the past four decades including meaningful scientific breakthroughs and all the evolutions in computer hardware we've enjoyed.

  102.

  103.
This isn't just any other Dell Technologies World – it's the 'AI edition'.

  104.
"All that progress that came before was really just the pre-game show," Dell tells us, emphasizing that the tech sector is currently experiencing a pivotal moment in its history.

Dell says we're "moving from computation to cognition, into the age of AI".

  105.
Dell says that organizations can't just look to "turn the wheel", when it comes to adopting AI. Instead, they must reinvent and innovate to transform their entire organization to make the most of it.

To hear more about AI and the work Dell is doing with its partners to harness the technology, we're now welcoming Bill McDermott, chairman and CEO, ServiceNow to the stage.

  106.
"ServiceNow is an idea, and just like how Michael Dell had his dream for Dell, I have mine for ServiceNow: to make sure it becomes the defining enterprise software company of the 21st century," says McDermott.

  107.
"Every workflow, in every industry and every corner of the world will be reinvented wirh generative AI," McDermott adds, implying that it changes our understanding of Moore's Law.

  108.
McDermott says he's currently working with the Schwarz Group, Europe's largest retailer, and notes that "one bad experience" for a customer makes them a third less likely to do business with your company ever again. AI can help here, he says, but it must also be done carefully.

"It's a mess out there, ladies and gentlemen. When you have people swivelling between 17 different applications a day, no wonder they don't want to come back to the office," he says.

"What we do is put a clean pane of glass on the mess, we become the AI platform of business transformation."

  109.
McDermott says with the right approach, organizations can achieve exponential benefits, but this will require a "human revolution" among the workforce driven by leaders.

  110.
In his closing remarks, McDermott praises Dell's cloud infrastructure which he says provides the most reliable basis for enterprise processes and feeds directly into ServiceNow's "unheard of" 99% retention rate.

  111.
"We use Dell's servers to train our large language models, and we're putting AI to work for people," he says, giving the example of conversational self-service for better customer experience.

  112.
So far, this has been a glowing 20 minutes of praise for Michael Dell, but light on announcements. But there's every indication that's about to change, with Nvidia's Jensen Huang having already been mentioned several times.

  113.
Dell's AI factories for customers

  114.
Before we get there, Dell is running us through some key stats for enterprise AI adoption. Running inference on LLMs on premises, Dell says, can be 75% more cost effective versus the public cloud. This is what Dell is looking to empower through its 'AI factory' approach, an end-to-end ecosystem for AI training, inference, and tuning.

  115.
"Data has been, and is, at the center of everything: it's the rocket fuel," he says.
116.
117. "So let's go where the data is. And no company in the world has provided more data storage capacity than Dell."

  118.
On this note Dell has today announced PowerStore Prime, a new NAS storage solution for 66% improved performance through flash storage and secure snapshots for data protection.

  119.
Joining this is the PowerScale F910, described by Dell as a product that "feeds the beast of accelerated computing" with unstructured data.

  120.
The heart of today's hardware announcements, however, is the PowerWdge XE9680. Dell says its specs include:

  121.

Eight Nvidia GPUs

4TB/sec throughout

50% more GPU direct score access

  122.
To handle all the throughput for these AI workloads, Dell has partnered with Broadcom and Nvidia for data fabrics.

  123.
AI at the edge

  124.
Dell is keen to move onto edge computing, with a landmark five new AI PCs announced today.

"We are using an advanced architecture with a CPU, a GPU, and an NPU," in each laptop, Dell says.

Dell claims that these devices are ideal for inferencing AI models at the edge without cutting into battery life.

  125.
All of this ties into Dell's AI ecosystem, we're told, which also includes open source AI models, services around retrieval augmented generation, and connections with Azure, DataBricks, IBM, and Snowflake.

If that sounds like a flurry of sudden announcements, it is – Dell almost said it all in one breath. We've been promised more details on all that in tomorrow's keynote, which we'll also be covering live.

  126.
Leveraging AI on premises with Dell

  127.
But how does all this benefit customers? Here to give a personal example is Sungwoo Hwang president and CEO, Samsung SDS.

  128.
"Our enterprise customers are very interested in using hyperautomation using LLMs, but they're worried about security because they have to put their proprietary information into LLMs, their company's core data," Hwang says.

  129.
Hwang says Dell has helped Samsung SDS in a meaningful way by providing its customers with low-latency AI solutions that are also inherently secure, being hosted on premises through Dell infrastructure.

  130.
"Dell AI Factory is expected to contribute to the establishment of data sovreingty for companies by enabling strong data security and customized AI service deployment," Hwang adds, praising Dell for its approach.

  131.
We've heard a lot of praise for Michael Dell already, but Dell is now taking time to give credit to Dell's partners and customers across the sector.

  132.
"We are getting faster, stronger, smarter to be by your side for both a sprint and a marathon," Dell says. The demand for AI is already touching every industry and organization, Dell says, but notes that AI models will vary by use case.

  133.
LLMs, for example, can create real value as chatbots for customer service but aren't so useful in a manufacturing context. For this, other models such as vision and multimodal AI will be necessary, he adds.

  134.
Small models also have a powerful role to play, Dell adds. As predicted, we're hearing more about the smaller, edge-capable LLMs now.

  135.
'AI factories' with Dell and Nvidia

  136.
"The early movers are making massive bets," Dell says, noting that we're at the start of a new industrial revolution. But don't take it from him, he urges – take it from the man he's quoting, Jensen Huang founder and CEO, Nvidia.

  137.

  138.
  139.
"Instead of just producing software, we're now producing intelligence, formulated in the form of tokens," Huang says. While the previous industrial revolution focused on producing software and the one before that producing electricity, he says, we're now directly manufacturing intelligence.

  140.
The bottom line here is that Dell and Nvidia are doubling down on the importance of AI. Huang underlines the importance of "generative AI factories," which can be used to totally reinvent a firm's operational model.

"Every company at its foundation is intelligence," Huang adds, noting that "every company will be an AI company".

  141.
Huang describes Dell AI Factories with Nvidia as "the largest AI go-to-market in history," to applause from the audience.

  142.
"Only Dell has the ability to build computer networking, storage, integrated with incredible software whether you want it to be air-cooled, liquid-cooled," Huang adds.

  143.
All of this revolves around seven new announcements for Dell AI Factory with Nvidia, including new Nvidia NIM microservices and hardware.

  144.
At the heart of this is the Dell PowerEdge XE9680L, a new liquid-cooled server rack that can host up to 72 of Nvidia's flagship Blackwell GPUs.

"Only at Dell World do you talk sexy like that," Huang quips, prompting loud laughter throughout the auditorium. On a more serious note, Huang says the aim here is to make AI as easy as possible, even when "giant supercomputers" are necessary for running the latest AI workloads.

  145.
What does Huang say we need to do going forward?

"One: modernize a trillion dollars of the world's data centers. Two: build these AI factories, for the rest of the hundred trillion dollar industries. Easy peasy."

  146.
Moving on, Dell notes that there are clear barriers to AI adoption. For one, we need ethical AI development, and to address enterprise concerns.

  147.
Green data centers, powered by renewable energy sources and cooled more efficiently are at the core of responsibly and sustainably adopting AI, Dell says.

  148.
He also says that governments must adopt an 'AI-first' approach and that Dell stands ready to support the public sector in this aim. If we don't invest in AI, Dell says, we'll miss out on benefits for future generations.

To demonstrate this, we're now being shown a short clip about what Dell calls 'AI for human progress'. Examples include AI for healthcare and the future generations using AI to solve issues in their communities, as well as students leveraging chatbots to train for job interviews.

  149.
"We are at the dawn of a new age of cognition," Dell says, thanking his guests today. To illustrate the point and emphasize the potential AI holds for future generations, Dell is joined onstage by McDermott, Hwang, and Huang alongside younger workers representing the next generation of the sector.

  150.

  151.
And with that, the day-one keynote is finished. Stay tuned for all the latest on the ground throughout the event.

  167.
Labour teases AI strategy plans ahead of 2024 general election

  168. <dc:content>
Labour is planning to launch its AI strategy within the next couple of weeks in the latest in a series of tech industry-related moves.

  169.
Speaking to an audience of business leaders at a business dinner held at London’s Science Museum last week, Peter Kyle, Labour’s shadow science, innovation, and technology secretary, said he was ambitious about the UK's AI opportunities.

  170.
"We are formulating a plan for government that will harness your innovation and your insight into the economy, the drive that you have," he said.

  171.
"If it is out there in the private sector creating wealth and jobs for our country, then we want to make sure that you have the economy that fully capitalizes it, and that you don’t have to go abroad to get the money that you need to upscale… and the skills that you need."

  172.
Attendee Steven George-Hilley, founder of city PR firm Centropy, said it was important that all parties put forward clear action plans for embracing AI.

  173.
"Having a national AI strategy in place is critical for ensuring the UK remains a global hub of tech innovation," he said.

  174.
Meanwhile, Derek Mackenzie, CEO of Investigo, part of The IN Group, said the comments from Labour on AI innovation are encouraging. Mackenzie warned, however, that greater synergy between industry and government is required to fully unlock the country’s potential.

  175.
"Moving forward, we need to see more collaboration between policymakers, businesses, and academic institutions to ensure the UK is training the next generation of AI talent, as well as spreading skills across existing workforces,” he said.

  176.
Kyle’s comments follow a slew of tech industry-related moves by the Labour Party as it prepares for an upcoming general election, which is expected to come later in 2024.

  177.
Earlier this year, he said a future Labour government would look at reforming processes at the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT). The party also hinted at plans to create a regulatory innovation office to help businesses align with a prospective Labour government’s industrial strategy.

  178.
In February, Chi Onwurah, shadow minister for science and innovation, told attendees at the State of Open Con summit that a future Labour government would focus heavily on supporting the open source community.

  179.
Onwurah said the party aims to work closely with the open source community to underpin broader technology sector growth and innovation. She specifically highlighted open source AI innovation as a key area of interest, noting that the ecosystem could play a critical role in “democratizing” the use of the technology.

  198.
Over the last year, the forum had been hosting stolen data from recent breaches affecting the European law enforcement agency Europol before being taken offline.

  199.
The FBI reported it had taken control of the servers and domains hosting the forum, and said it was currently reviewing the site’s backend, appealing for any users with further information on criminal activity to report it immediately.

  200.
BreachForums is a continuation of another popular hacking forum known as RaidForums, which was active between 2015 and 2022, before its founder, Diogo Santos Coelho, or ‘Omnipotent’, was arrested by UK authorities.

  201.
Prominent RaidForums community member, ‘Pompurin’ or Conor Brian Fitzpatrick, then set up the original iteration of BreachForums, which ran from 2022 up until Fitzpatrick’s arrest in March last year.

  202.
During this time, the site hosted stolen data related to over 80,000 members of the FBI non profit information portal InfraGard, as well as healthcare information of more than 56,000 individuals stolen from health insurance marketplace DC Health Link.

  203.
BreachForums was quickly resurrected, however, with forum member ‘Baphomet’ taking control of the site’s infrastructure, which they quickly overhauled in fear of it still being compromised by law enforcement agencies.

  204.
With the help of the ShinyHunters threat collective, Baphomet was able to reopen the forum, which has hosted a database containing 49 million customer records stolen from a Dell partner portal, as well as information exfiltrated from Europpol’s EPE web platform.

  205.
This time, the takedown also encompassed the forum’s Telegram channels, clearnet sites, as well as a separate Telegram operated by Baphomet, but despite this new sites will likely pop up in no time as the cyber crime continues unabated.

  206.
BreachForums highlights the endless game of dark web whack a mole

  207.
The ongoing saga between forum administrators and law enforcement agencies is unlikely to be impacted by these latest developments, as new marketplaces have already begun springing up in the aftermath of BreachForum’s demise.

  208.
Kevin Robertson, COO and cofounder at cyber security firm Acumen, said that within hours hacking groups had already announced their plans to take the place of BreachForums as the go-to marketplace for selling stolen data.

  209.
“It’s been hours since the seizure of BreachForums and there are already new marketplaces on the horizon. The threat actor USDoD has already announced Breach Nation, which is set to launch on 4th July, while there are also indications that ShinyHunters have something in the works”, Robertson advised.

  210.
“This shows that when sites are as successful as BreachForums, attackers won’t go down without a fight. While Baphomet, the latest operator of BreachForums, has reportedly been arrested, there are numerous others wanting to take the reins and develop their own marketplace so they can continue to serve users.”

  211.

RELATED WHITEPAPER

Revolutionize your IT infrastructure

  212.
Robertson said that while the FBI and other law enforcement agencies are making strides in targeting these sites, the cyber criminals behind them can spawn new alternatives with relative ease.

  213.
“It’s a game of cat and mouse. Law enforcement is making good progress with takedowns, but while there is the ability to rebrand under new identities and infrastructure, there is no permanent disruption of the actors.”

  214.
Nonetheless, these takedowns mean operations like BreachForums are consigned to a limited lifespan, as seizure and prosecution becomes more of an inevitability.

  215.
Accordingly, Robertson predicted that although the new BreachForums alternatives will only enjoy a brief time in the sun before they are taken down, the vicious cycle is doomed to continue.

  216.
“Breach Nation will only have a limited shelf life, we can be sure of that. But we can also be sure that the operators and actors using the site will continue to resurface under new guises, causing just as much chaos in the online world.”

  217.
Similar cases where law enforcement operations successfully force cyber criminal networks offline, including operation Duck Hunt targeting the notorious Qakbot botnet, have raised questions around the significance of their impact.

The resilience and resourcefulness of threat actors has been well established in the aftermath of a number of notable breaches and so whether or not these blows constitute a knockout for cybercriminals behind BreachForums remains doubtful.

  265. <dc:content>
AMD is celebrating major industry recognition after being awarded the 2024 Corporate Innovation Award by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

  266.
The semiconductor giant was recognized for its development and deployment of chiplet architecture designs aimed at transforming high-performance computing (HPC), which the institute described as pioneering.

  267.
The industry recognition highlights the transformative research conducted by AMD’s engineering teams, according to Mark Papermaster, executive vice president and chief technical officer at AMD.

  268.
“Several years ago, our passionate, world-class engineering teams began addressing the scaling challenges of traditional chip design,” he said.

“Everyone takes modular architecture for granted now, but at the time it was radical thinking. Its success is as much a feat of engineering as a testament to the power of teams with diverse skills and expertise working together, despite uncertainty and risk, toward a common vision.”

  269.
AMD was among the first companies to harness the capabilities of chiplet architecture to drive advances in processor performance, efficiency, and flexibility, helping extend and build upon previous performance gains under Moore’s Law.

The firm’s research has helped extend and build upon previous performance gains under Moore’s Law, and in 2018 introduced the first processor that featured a chiplet-based x86 CPU design.

  270.
The second-generation AMD EPYC server processor was powered by the “Zen 2” core architecture, which has since been built upon to deliver marked performance gains.

  271.
AMD has also incorporated chiplet architectures across the breadth of its processor portfolio, including AMD Ryzen CPUs for PCs, AMD EPYC processors for data centers, and AMD Instinct accelerators for use in HPC and AI development.

  272.
This marks the second time AMD has received this award. In 2005, the institute recognized the company for its pioneering research in the evolution of x86 microprocessors and its extension to a 64-bit architecture, which is the foundation of modern data centers and PCs.

  273.
How AMD led the way in chiplet architectures

  274.
AMD’s new processor design approach involved overhauling traditionally monolithic SoC designs into multiple smaller “chiplets”, which it said allowed researchers to rapidly accelerate time-to-market and deliver high performance, energy efficiency, and cost-effective chips.

  275.
These chips leveraged common designs for multiple markets and a wide array of use cases.

IEEE said AMD’s chiplet architecture has “nearly halved” the manufacturing cost of producing modern processors, and have brought notable advantages such as greater data bandwidth to memory, and higher compute capability compared to more conventional designs.

  277.
AMD’s research into chiplet design continues to drive advances in computing performance and efficiency, which IEEE said will enable the industry to address some of the world’s most pressing challenges through scientific research.

The chiplet-based AMD EPYC processors, for example, are currently used within the Frontier supercomputer, the world’s first exascale machine. Scientists are currently using Frontier to develop innovative new technologies for use in energy and medical science.

  296.
Fast forward those four decades and the business – now called Dell Technologies Inc. – is an American multinational technology company employing more than 120,000 people worldwide and boasting $88bn of revenue as of 2024, with Michael Dell still at its helm as CEO and Chairman.

  297.
  298.
A quick history of Dell

  299.
When Michael Dell began his journey with the company in 1984, he probably didn’t expect to leave university a year later – at the end of his first year – to focus on the firm full-time.

  300.
His aim was to sell IBM personal computers directly to consumers, built from stock components. Dell believed he would be able to better serve their demand, creating a system that better matched their needs – assembling the PC from a selection of options chosen by customers.

  301.
Its first in-house designed computer in 1985 featured an Intel processor and sold for $795. PC’s Limited is said to have made $73m in its first year of trading and changed its name to Dell Computer Corporation in 1987.

  302.
This was the same year it opened its first international subsidiary in the UK and 12 months later the company went public following an annual growth of 80%. In 1990, a manufacturing center was opening in Ireland to serve customers in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA).

  303.
As the internet started to gather pace, Dell Computer Corporation took the plunge with online sales, commencing the practice in 1996. The risk succeeded allowing it to expand into the Asia-Pacific region.

  304.
By the turn of the millennium, it would have manufacturing centers in China, Ireland, Brazil, and the United States. Just a year later, in 2001, Dell would become the number one computer systems provider worldwide and this year would also mark the beginning of its relationship with EMC, the data storage experts founded back in 1979.

  305.
While rivals such as Compaq, Gateway, and Packard Bell faltered Dell remained strong, changing its name in 2003 to Dell Inc. to recognize its growing product line, which included printers.

  306.
In 2006, Dell bought gaming hardware specialists Alienware. The same year, it saw growth stall and lost its title of the largest PC manufacturer to Hewlett Packard.

  307.
The late 2000s were challenging. Downsizing and closures reduced headcount at the company and the release of Apple’s first iPad tablet cannibalised PC sales. Dell Technologies’ own attempts to create a popular handheld with the Dell Streak were not commercially successful and its PC business declined.

  308.
But in 2013, things began to turn around. This was the year Michael Dell bought the company back from shareholders with help from a private equity firm, with a vision to focus on innovation.

Three years later in 2016 Dell merged with EMC to create Dell Technologies, a deal which then was the biggest in tech history. As EMC had an 80% equity stake in VMware, which passed into the hands of Dell Technologies. VMware was held as a separate company until it successfully spun off from Dell in 2021.

  309.
In 2021, the Dell Technologies also released Dell Apex, its anything as a service (Xaas) portfolio that covers cloud, storage, and infrastructure.

  310.
What does Dell Technologies sell?

  313.
Dell Apex provides infrastructure on-premises and in the cloud on a self-service access basis. This is available in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Denmark, Norway, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Italy, Sweden, Finland, Ireland and Singapore.

  314.
Like many in the tech sector, Dell is also heavily invested in generative AI. Customers can expect to make use of Dell services that support AI strategies, training, and deployment including the use of chatbots for customer service or AI models for coding.

  315.
Dell Technologies M&A activity

  316.
Throughout its history, Dell has been involved in a wide range of mergers and acquisitions, alongside its headline ones such as EMC and Alienware.

  317.
According to its Investment Thesis, the company aims to “leverage our strengths to extend our leadership positions and capture new growth opportunities”. It aims to invest in its supply chain to ensure it’s as agile and nimble globally as it can be to withstand and be resilient to fluctuations and shocks.

  318.
Other companies it has acquired include EqualLogic (2008), Boomi (2010), SonicWall (2012) and StatSoft (2014).

  319.
Doing business with Dell Technologies

  320.
Dell has its HQ in Round Rock, Texas and represents a major contributor to the city’s general fund through its sales taxes. It is also a major employer in the area.

According to the company’s website, it sets “ambitious goals that reflect who we are and what we stand for, even when we don’t yet know the path forward”. And as the world changes, Dell promises it “won’t stop innovating to achieve our goals and empower our customers to achieve theirs”.

Dell Technologies also has a range of core sustainability goals it is working towards by 2030. These include reusing or recycling an equivalent product for every product bought, ensuring 100% of its packaging is made from recycled or renewable material and manufacturing more than half of its product content from recycled or renewable material.

In 2022, Dell teamed up with Intel to create a prototype for sustainable PC design called Concept Luna. Its modular design eliminated the need for adhesives and cables and minimized the use of screws. This made it easier to repair and meant it could be dismantled as a system in minutes rather than hours. The hope for Concept Luna was to make components more accessible to expand the opportunities for their reuse.

  339. <dc:content>
Google has showcased a number of updates to its generative AI tools and a few peeks at future products, as it continues its efforts to seize momentum from OpenAI.

  340.
Earlier this week OpenAI unveiled its latest flagship LLM , GPT-4o, which is able to joke and flirt with users; following that it has been Google’s chance to detail where it has got to with its generative AI products at its Google I/O event.

  341.
Late last year Google unveiled its first multimodal LLM Gemini 1.0 in three sizes: Ultra, Pro and Nano for on-device processing. It follows this with Gemini 1.5 with improved performance and a context window of one million tokens (one token is four characters or somewhere around three-quarters of a word so 100 tokens is 75 words).

  342.
Because, the company said, developers want an LLM with lower latency and lower cost; it has now added Gemini 1.5 Flash to the portfolio.

  343.
Gemini 1.5 Flash is the fastest Gemini model served in the API and it is optimized for high-volume, high-frequency tasks which Google said makes it more cost-efficient to serve.

  344.
Although it’s a lighter weight model than 1.5 Pro, it’s still capable of multimodal reasoning across vast amounts of information, according to Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis.

  345.
He said 1.5 Flash is suited to summarization, chat applications, image and video captioning, or data extraction from long documents and tables. It has been trained by 1.5 Pro through a process called “distillation,” whereby the most essential knowledge and skills from a larger model are transferred to a smaller model.

  346.
The model has a one-million-token context window by default, which means you can process one hour of video, 11 hours of audio, codebases with more than 30,000 lines of code, or over 700,000 words.

  347.
Both 1.5 Pro and 1.5 Flash are available in public preview with a 1 million token context window in Google AI Studio and Vertex AI.

  348.
Google Gemini 1.5 Pro updates

  349.
Google also introduced updates to Gemini 1.5 Pro which it styles as its best model for general performance across generative AI tasks. These include upping the model to a two million token context window.

  350.
The company said this would give the model “near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks” making it possible to accurately process large-scale documents, thousands of lines of code or hours of audio and video.

  351.
To illustrate this Google had the model analyst a 402-page transcript of the Apollo 11 Moon landing – accounting for 320,00 tokens, and then hunted through for ‘comedic’ moments, which it did.

  352.
Hassabis said Google had also enhanced its code generation, logical reasoning and planning, multi-turn conversation, and audio and image understanding. “We see strong improvements on public and internal benchmarks for each of these tasks,” he said.

  353.
This means that Gemini 1.5 Pro can now follow increasingly complex and nuanced instructions, he said. “We’ve improved control over the model’s responses for specific use cases, like crafting the persona and response style of a chat agent or automating workflows through multiple function calls.”

  354.
He said 1.5 Pro can now reason across image and audio for videos uploaded in Google AI Studio, and that 1.5 Pro is being integrated into Google products, including Gemini Advanced and in Workspace apps.

  355.
Gemini on Android

  356.
Google said Gemini on Android will use generative AI to get better at understanding the context of what’s on your screen and what app you’re using.

  357.
Android users will soon be able to bring up Gemini's overlay on top of the app they are using. Google gave the example of dragging and dropping generated images into Gmail or Google Messages, or tapping “Ask this video” to find specific information in a YouTube video.

  358.
With Gemini Advanced users will have the option to “Ask this PDF” to quickly get answers from documents. Google said this update will roll out to “hundreds of millions of devices” over the next few months.

  359.
It said that, starting with Pixel later this year, it will be introducing Gemini Nano with Multimodality to allow phones to not just process text input but also understand more information in context like sights, sounds and spoken language.

  360.
Google said it is also testing a new feature that uses Gemini Nano to provide real-time alerts during a call if it detects conversation patterns associated with scams. Users would receive an alert if someone posing as a “bank representative” asks you to urgently transfer funds, make a payment with a gift card or requests personal information like card PINs or passwords, which are not the sort of thing the bank usually asks you to do.

  361.
“This protection all happens on-device, so your conversation stays private to you,” Google said, which this would be offered as an opt-in feature.

  362.
Project Astra

  363.
Google also showed off Project Astra, which Hassabis described as an ‘advanced seeing and talking responsive agent’.

  364.
Google illustrated this with a pair of videos featuring someone walking around Google’s London office and using the agent on a smartphone to identify objects and read software code. They then switched to smart glasses and the same agent was able to help fix a coding problem and come up with a name for the band (the band apparently featured a soft toy and a dog, which didn’t seem to bother the AI).

  365.
Hassabis said that in order to be truly useful, an agent needs to understand and respond to the complex and dynamic world just like people do, and to be able to take in and remember what it sees and hears in context so it can take action.

  366.
But said that getting response time down to something conversational is a difficult engineering challenge.

  367.

RELATED WHITEPAPER

Insight into AI models and how they are used in the real-world

  368.
“Over the past few years, we've been working to improve how our models perceive, reason and converse to make the pace and quality of interaction feel more natural.”

  369.
He said that, by building on Gemini, Google has developed prototype agents that can process information faster by continuously encoding video frames, combining the video and speech input into a timeline of events, and caching this information for efficient recall. These agents can better understand the context and respond quickly in conversation.

  370.
“With technology like this, it’s easy to envision a future where people could have an expert AI assistant by their side, through a phone or glasses,” he said.

  371.
None of these updates particularly grab the attention like OpenAI’s latest chatty release, apart from Project Astra which is still in development. However, showing off a multimodal assistant running on a smartphone will certainly put the pressure on Apple to come up with something similar, soon.

  391.
The intention of HPE GreenLake Block Storage for AWS is, the company said, to simplify workload placement and data management to the cloud using software-defined storage. It is “designed to deliver a seamless, unified storage management experience across hybrid cloud” with high levels of resiliency and faster ROI.

  392.
The second block storage announcement is a new release of HPE GreenLake for Block Storage. It now supports NVMe scaling up to 5.6PB on the company’s Alletra hardware – a series of specialized block storage appliances that are only available through GreenLake.

  393.
In line with its business strategy, HPE GreenLake for Block Storage also includes an AI element, with support for HPE Infosight AIOps. Featuring cross-stack analytics it will, the company said, improve performance, resource utilization, and availability.

  394.
Finally, the company has added support for Alletra MP and SimpliVity Gen 11 to HPE GreenLake for Private Cloud Business Edition, a service that was also announced at Discover 2023.

  395.
HPE GreenLake updates come at a pivotal time

  396.
The announcement of these updates is very much in line with HPE’s overall strategy. HPE GreenLake isn’t the company’s only product offering or way to access HPE hardware – far from it in fact.

  397.
ITPro has been told more than once that the majority of its revenue still comes from traditional on-prem hardware sales. The data center and total ownership are, in other words, still king.

  398.

RELATED WHITEPAPER

Effectively manage data used for broad-based AI

  399.
Yet the direction of travel is very much in line with the organization’s messaging – and product emphasis – since Antonio Neri took over as CEO in 2018. Indeed, in 2021 Neri declared that GreenLake is the future of HPE, saying: “This will be our leading product, leading offer, our leading experience.”

  400.
It’s no surprise to see AI get a mention, either, given it’s now one of the company’s three primary business pillars. It’s also a well established technology, rather than the more zeitgeisty generative AI that has the tech world buzzing.

This is probably a good thing from a buyer point of view, as implementing it on critical infrastructure will take less of a leap of faith.

  401.
These announcements are also undoubtedly laying the groundwork for bigger announcements at HPE Discover 2024, which takes place in just over four weeks time.
