What is Azithromycin 5 Day Dose Pack (azithromycin)? Azithromycin is an antibiotic that fights bacteria. Azithromycin is used to treat many different types of infections caused by bacteria, such as respiratory infections, skin infections, ear infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. Azithromycin may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. What is the most important information I should know about Azithromycin 5 Day Dose Pack (azithromycin)? You should not use this medication if you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking azithromycin. Slideshow: Drug Prices Gone Wild: 10 Old Drugs, 10 New Pricetags What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Azithromycin 5 Day Dose Pack (azithromycin)? You should not use azithromycin if you are allergic to it, or if: you have ever had jaundice or liver problems caused by taking azithromycin; or you are allergic to similar drugs such as clarithromycin, erythromycin, or telithromycin. To make sure azithromycin is safe for you, tell your doctor if you have: liver disease; kidney disease; myasthenia gravis; a heart rhythm disorder; or a history of Long QT syndrome. This medicine is not expected to harm an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant. It is not known whether azithromycin passes into breast milk or if it could harm a nursing baby. Tell your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby. Do not give this medicine to a child younger than 6 months old. How should I take Azithromycin 5 Day Dose Pack (azithromycin)? Follow all directions on your prescription label. Do not take this medicine in larger or smaller amounts or for longer than recommended. The dose and length of treatment with azithromycin may not be the same for every type of infection. You may take most forms of azithromycin with or without food. Take Zmax extended release liquid (oral suspension) on an empty stomach , at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after a meal. To use the oral suspension single dose packet: Open the packet and pour the medicine into 2 ounces of water. Stir this mixture and drink all of it right away. Do not save for later use. To make sure you get the entire dose, add a little more water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away. Throw away any mixed Zmax oral suspension that has not been used within 12 hours. Shake the oral suspension (liquid) well just before you measure a dose. Measure liquid medicine with the dosing syringe provided, or with a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a dose-measuring device, ask your pharmacist for one. Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time. Your symptoms may improve before the infection is completely cleared. Skipping doses may also increase your risk of further infection that is resistant to antibiotics. Azithromycin will not treat a viral infection such as the flu or a common cold. Store at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Throw away any unused liquid medicine after 10 days. What happens if I miss a dose? Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Do not take extra medicine to make up the missed dose.

For people who want a good-paying, stable nursing job, one class stands in the way: Introduction to Anatomy and Physiology. And it's a tough one. At the first day of anatomy class at West Kentucky Community and Technical College, Jonathan Harned sits in the front row, taking notes. He has safety goggles pushed up on his head — he just came from work. He's got a military crew cut. Harned was the first one at class today; he was an hour and a half early. He's been waiting 20 years to get to this moment, he says. Harned's had a lot of jobs in the past couple of decades. He's been a mechanic, making $8 an hour. And a concrete finisher making about $15 an hour. He drove a garbage truck. He lost that job. Then he answered an ad in the paper, and started putting up billboard ads. That was 10 years ago. "I make $17.61 an hour right now, " Harned says. "And if I lose this job for any given reason, I'm back to $10-$12 an hour. I have no security. I have 22 years of reasons why I want to be here." The stakes are high for everyone in this anatomy class. At one nearby hospital, a starting nurse's salary is $19 an hour. That's what Harned's dreaming of. But only if you can get through this class and get a nursing degree. Only about 50 percent of people nationwide make it through this class, according to the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society. And it's a tough class: three hours of lecture; a ton of reading. Unfortunately, it's required. "You're not taking this class as just an elective, " Dean Karen Hlinka says. "You're taking this class as building the foundation for the rest of your education. So you've got to get it." Hlinka realized that a lot of her students just weren't ready. They knew how to memorize, but they didn't really know how to think. So the school set up a special class, which teaches just the first six weeks of a whole semester. It began integrating how to read the textbook into class lectures, instead of just what's in the textbook. It seems to be helping. Here, about 70 percent of the students — instead of the national average of 50 percent — make it through the class.

What does the Shadow Know? Recently I had the chance to interview and conduct a day long orientation to a potential candidate to a Nurse Anesthetist Residency Program. Good candidates are hard to find ala May West. Some of you may know the reference. There are SRNA programs out there that like young blond inexperienced candidates for their programs thinking that they can mold them into subservient technicians that could fit into their semi-national workforce. Not so here at our facility. Ideally, we are looking for experienced ICU nurses that can think, have the experience to give them some wisdom and those with leadership skills to direct and manage future anesthesia cases. Do I ask for too much. I would hope not certainly in the 21st Century with Health Care evolving into something none of us had anticipated nor expected. The medical world is in total flux and non of us in “the Business” of health care know how the future will play out. What is central in my thinking is patient care and what is best for our clients. Who are our clients as anesthesia providers? Certainly our patients come first but that is not all. Our clients include the surgeons and nurses that work in the peri-operative arena as well as the families and visitors that come to our “peri-operative home”. We serve them all but primarily it is the direct patient care in the operating room that defines our practice as safe and efficient Nurse Anesthetists.

An investigation by the Los Angeles Times has discovered that some temp firms that provide nurses to hospitals are taking shortcuts in the background screening process, and may be placing unqualified, incompetent and even convicted criminals as caregivers for patients. High-volume demand driven by the massive nursing shortage, scarce regulation and inadequate systems has resulted in woefully insufficient screening procedures. The LA Times reports that some nursing registries and temp agencies have become a magnet for sub-par nurses who have revoked or restricted licenses and have racked up serious complaints (such as stealing drugs, ignoring patients, sleeping on the job and failing to perform ordered procedures)...

Chances are, the animal wouldn't have made it if they hadn't nursed him back to health. Arttu is probably the cutest thing we've seen in ages, and it's our job to write about cute things. After the family decided to release him back into the wild, he wasn't having any of it. The gorgeous baby squirrel had formed an attachment to his new adopted family and wanted to stay. The family : Priami He was also left blind from his injuries, and the family soon realised that he wouldn't survive on his own. Arttu had to become part of the family. And part of the family he became - the little red squirrel became very domesticated and enjoyed playing in the house. They also let the little guy play outside - and he was so attached to the family that he always came back in when he was done. Arttu sadly passed away after a long life of six years lodging with the family. They obviously loved him very much, and made a grave for him in the garden, with food kept out to feed other squirrels.

By, BSN, RN As citizens of the United States we are all familiar with The Bill of Rights , and as anyone who works in a hospital knows, there is a Patient's Bill of Rights too. But did you know there is a Nurses' Bill of Rights ? The Nurses' Bill of Rights was adopted by the American Nurses Association (ANA) Board of Directors on June 26, 2001. "The ANA Bill of Rights for Registered Nurses is a powerful statement of the rights that every nurse must have to provide high quality patient care in a safe environment, ” said ANA President Mary Foley, in 2001. "We believe that nurses have the right to a safe work environment, to practice in a manner that assures the provision of safe care through adherence to professional standards and ethical practice, and to advocate freely for themselves and their patients." The Nurses' Bill of Rights dictates: Nurses have the right to practice in a manner that fulfills their obligations to society and to those who receive nursing care. Nurses have the right to practice in environments that allow them to act in accordance with professional standards and legally authorized scopes of practice. Nurses have the right to a work in an environment that supports and facilitates ethical practice, in accordance with the Code of Ethics for Nurses with Interpretive Statements . Nurses have the right to freely and openly advocate for themselves and their patients, without fear of retribution. Nurses have the right to fair compensation for their work, consistent with their knowledge, experience and professional responsibilities. Nurses have the right to a work environment that is safe for themselves and for their patients. Nurses have the right to negotiate the conditions of their employment, either as individuals or collectively, in all practice settings.

Weigh daily or as ordered. Weighing serves as an assessment tool to determine the adequacy of nutritional intake. Ascertain patient’s dietary program and usual pattern then compare with recent intake. Identifies deficits and deviations from therapeutic needs. Auscultate bowel sounds. Note reports of abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting of undigested food. Maintain NPO status as indicated. Hyperglycemia and fluid and electrolyte disturbances can decrease gastric motility and/or function (due to distention or ileus) affecting choice of interventions. Note: Chronic difficulties with decreased gastric emptying time and poor intestinal motility may suggest autonomic neuropathies affecting the GI tract and requiring symptomatic treatment. Provide liquids containing nutrients and electrolytes as soon as patient can tolerate oral fluids then progress to a more solid food as tolerated. Oral route is preferred when patient is alert and bowel function is restored. Identify food preferences, including ethnic and cultural needs. If patient’s food preferences can be incorporated into the meal plan, cooperation with dietary requirements may be facilitated after discharge. Include SO in meal planning as indicated. To promote sense of involvement and provide information to the SO to understand the nutritional needs of the patient. Note: Various methods available or dietary planning include exchange list, point system, glycemic index, or pre selected menus. Observe for signs of hypoglycemia: changes in LOC, cold and clammy skin, rapid pulse, hunger, irritability, anxiety, headache, lightheadedness, shakiness. Hypoglycemia can occur once blood glucose level is reduced and carbohydrate metabolism resumes and insulin is being given. If the patient is comatose, hypoglycemia may occur without notable change in LOC. This potentially life-threatening emergency should be assessed and treated quickly per protocol. Note: Type 1 diabetics of long standing may not display usual signs of hypoglycemia because normal response to low blood sugar may be diminished. Perform fingerstick glucose testing. Beside analysis of serum glucose is more accurate than monitoring urine sugar. Urine glucose is not sensitive enough to detect fluctuations in serum levels and can be affected by patient’s individual renal threshold or the presence of urinary retention. Note: Normal levels for fingerstick glucose testing may vary depending on how...
