64.

From May 13-15, No. 2 Vanderbilt Men’s Golf competed at the West Lafayette NCAA Regional. The Commodores, seeded No. 1 in their region, conquered the rest of the field, shooting a collective 24-under 840 to race past the rest of the competition. This victory marks the program’s third NCAA Regional title of all time, and the seventh team victory this season. All of Vanderbilt’s players secured top-15 finishes, and William Moll won the individual title.

 65.
The top five teams at each of the six regionals advanced to the NCAA Championships, which will be played at the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa Champions Course in Carlsbad, Calif.

 66.
Gordon Sargent, Cole Sherwood, Matthew Riedel, Jackson Van Paris and Moll earned the start for the Commodores at the par-72 Kampen Course.

 67.
On Day One, the Commodores came out of the gates firing. Vanderbilt shot an 11-under 277 to jump out to an early lead. It was a total team effort, as four of the team’s five players shot under par.

 68.
Sargent paced the Commodores, shooting a 5-under 67 to sit in a tie for second individually after 18 holes. He had a bogey-free back nine, in which he made three birdies, to jump up the leaderboard.

 69.
Sherwood shot a 3-under 69 with six birdies, while Moll finished with a 70 to sit inside the top 10 after round one. Van Paris shot a 71, and Riedel fired a 73.

 70.
“We got out to a great start,” head coach Scott Limbaugh said after Day One. “This is the NCAA Regionals, and you need to put your best foot forward. It’s so important for the guys to trust their training, and I feel like we’ve trained well. It’s all about trusting yourself and your teammates at this point and staying patient out there. I thought we did a really good job at that today.”

 71.
On Day Two, Vanderbilt kept its foot on the gas pedal. The Commodores remained in first place following a 5-under 283 in round two to sit one stroke ahead of second-place Purdue.

 72.
This time, Moll set the pace for Vanderbilt, shooting a 3-under 69 to move into a tie for second place individually. Tied with him was Sargent who finished Day Two after firing an even-par round. An unfortunate triple bogey on Sargent’s back nine prevented him from pushing into red figures for the second straight day.

 73.
“I’m in a good spot [heading into round three],” Moll said. “Hopefully [I can] just get rid of those bogeys and make a few more putts tomorrow.”

 74.
Riedel and Sherwood both fired a 71 to stay inside the top 10 heading into the final round. Riedel seemed poised to go low after an impressive 3-under 33 on the front nine, but a double bogey on the 18th hole was a major blow to his scorecard.

 75.
“It was good again to have all five of our guys in contention all day, and it was good to see some of them bounce back,” Limbaugh said. “We had a little more adversity today in more scoreable conditions with less wind, but it was really good to see the team respond well to that adversity. We didn’t quite finish to our standards. We know we’ve got to own the things that we can own, have an aggressive mindset and keep moving forward.”

 76.
On Day Three, the Commodores emerged victorious and punched their ticket to the NCAA Championships. It was a stellar day for Vanderbilt, as all five of its players shot even-par or better. An 8-under 280 on the final day was enough to beat second-place Purdue by 13 strokes.

 77.
Moll captured the individual title, carding a 2-under 70 in round three. Three birdies and a sole bogey brought some individual hardware back to Nashville. This win marked his second collegiate victory and first of this season.

 78.
“I was really consistent, and it kind of compares to how I’ve played for most of the spring,” Moll said after the tournament. “Being able to keep the ball in front of me and rolling a couple of putts was awesome. The team played amazing. We didn’t have a great second round, but we bounced back and really did well today. It’s great to end Regionals this way.”

 79.
Sargent fired a 71 to finish in a tie for second overall. It was the junior’s sixth top-10 finish this season. Riedel shot a 69 to sit in a tie for 10th place, and Sherwood finished in a tie for eighth.

 80.
“I’m proud of those guys,” Limbaugh said. “We wanted to be a team in pursuit and not protective. Doing hard things together makes you better. That’s what our team did all week and today especially. It’s a tough golf course with a lot of challenging shots, but I wanted us to come out today and appreciate who we are, fight and send a statement. I think our team was able to do that.”

 81.
Vanderbilt now turns its attention to the NCAA Championships, which start on May 24. The Commodores hold a No. 2 national ranking and have one of the most veteran rosters of the 30 teams competing. After Vanderbilt failed to make the match-play portion of the NCAA Championships in 2023, it seems poised to make a deeper run this year.

 100.

Vanderbilt Chabad will move into the new Lubeck Center for Jewish Life this summer. Construction on the center began three years ago. According to Rabbi Shlomo Rothstein, director of Vanderbilt Chabad, the leading motivation for Chabad’s relocation was a desire for a building with a larger capacity.

 101.
While the new building was under construction, Chabad occupied space in the Center for Spiritual and Religious Life. According to Rothstein, students will be informally invited to visit the Lubeck Center over the summer, but the building will not formally open until closer to the fall. Rothstein said a grand opening ceremony will be held around Parents Weekend.

 102.
“We are very close now, there are only a few last things done before we move in,” Rothstein said. “With God’s help, we will move in over the summer and be up and running for the fall semester.”

 103.
Rothstein said Chabad started in a smaller building on campus in November of 2007 but quickly grew too large to remain there. Chabad purchased a new building that served as the Chabad House from 2012 until 2021. Rothstein said Chabad outgrew that location as well, at which point it was knocked down to make space for the Lubeck Center.

 104.
“I remember the Friday night in 2018 when the house was packed with about 80 students, and a guy came running down the block, ‘Rabbi! I’ve convinced my whole fraternity to come. They are on their way!’” Rothstein said. “There was no room. I had to turn them away. That was hard and a turning moment.”

 105.
Rothstein mentioned several key amenities the new Chabad House will have, including cooking and worship spaces.

 106.
“Logistically, there will be a commercial kitchen, proper storage and prep space — which enables us to be more efficient and do much more,” Rothstein said. “There will be a shul, a Jewish sanctuary, with an Ark and Torah for prayer services, Torah classes, discussions and for students to use a sacred space as they wish. There will be a beautiful multi-purpose space for much larger Shabbat and holidays celebrations, social events, and study space.”

 107.
Rothstein said he was grateful to the Lubeck family and other donors for making the new house’s construction possible.

 108.
“The new Chabad House building will be named The Lubeck Center for Jewish Life at Vanderbilt University in honor of the lead donors who have generously invested their care, time, and dollars to build the new center and are true partners in all our work,” Rothstein said. “I would also like to give a heartfelt thank you to the many parents of students, alumni, and friends who have given so generously to make this center a reality. This is a true community project that took many people coming together to make happen.”

 109.
Chabad Co-President and senior Joshua Weingarten said he believes the new Chabad House will cultivate community among Jewish students.

 110.
“It is nice to have a space for Jewish students where we can hang out, learn and participate in Jewish activities with other students who share a similar religious and cultural background,” Weingarten said.

 111.
Weingarten expressed excitement at the prospect of the house’s completion but noted that it may take students time to adjust to the new building.

 112.
“The most challenging part will probably be getting everyone accustomed to being in a new location because they are used to not being there,” Weingarten said. “It will take time to establish that as the new home for Chabad, but I am confident that at the start of the new year everyone will feel comfortable in the new house.”

 113.
Chabad executive board member and sophomore Lexi Schachter also expressed enthusiasm about the opening of the new Chabad House.

 114.
“It’s an incredible opportunity for Chabad to expand our reach and accommodate more students for all of our events from weekly Shabbat dinners to our lecture series to large Passover seders,” Schachter said. “I am most looking forward to having a large kosher kitchen to help cook for Shabbat and other weekly events.”

 136.

I’m going to a wedding in June, and I’ve been dress shopping for it all week. After searching for hours, I finally found one that called my name: Draped in lace, it screamed spring in a perfect pastel yellow, and it fit me like a glove. Unfortunately, it cost over $300.

 137.
I wanted to search for a dupe of the dress, but I didn’t. Why? Because I, like many Vanderbilt students, have taken an environmental science class, which introduced me to the effects of the garment industry and has shown me the problems with fast fashion.

 138.
I’ve always been obsessed with collecting material things — clothes, makeup, even gel pens. In my mid-teens, I indulged in fast fashion because most brands had endless pages of items with new styles available every day, and I could easily justify purchases with their cheap prices. However, I’ve gotten better at not buying that random but oh-so-cute top that pops up on my Instagram story via the algorithm. I’m proud to say that I’ve committed to not buying fast fashion, and everyone at Vanderbilt should do the same given how the fashion industry is responsible for multitudes of human and environmental rights abuses.

 139.
Environmental impacts

 140.
Fast fashion and the garment industry at large have devastating effects on the environment. The poorer the working conditions are in the fashion sector, the worse the manufacturing process is for the environment. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is currently the largest of the five plastic accumulation zones worldwide that act like vortexes, sending microplastics into the deepest parts of the ocean. The Ocean Cleanup reported that the surface area of this zone alone covers 620,000 square miles — more than twice the size of Texas and three times the size of France.

 200.
While the textile industry is a significant contributor to microplastic pollution, it has other devastating impacts on our environment. Around 20% of wastewater worldwide comes from fabric dyeing, and synthetic textiles are responsible for 35% of all ocean microplastics. The fast fashion industry uses even more synthetic fabrics than the industry average, utilizing synthetic textiles for at least 70% of its products.

 201.
Microplastics make their way into our food in many ways, such as through fish that digest them in contaminated oceans. Similarly, wastewater from textile production contaminates our water sources and land-based food sources that require watering the soil with microplastics. They even pollute the air through construction and material production, such as producing clothes, furniture and water bottles. Scientists believe that microplastics in our bloodstream can increase the risk of cancer, heart attack and stroke, among other health complications.

 202.
Microplastics are only part of the problem. The U.S. Department of Labor reported that the fashion sector produces more carbon emissions than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. On its current trajectory, the fashion sector will account for a shocking 25% of the total global carbon budget by 2050.

 203.
Social impacts

 204.
The fashion sector also grossly violates human rights in underprivileged countries, disproportionately affecting already marginalized demographics. Today, there are an estimated 160 million forced child laborers working. Half of these child laborers work in textile manufacturing. Women face human rights violations too: They make up 75% of garment workers and they report facing gendered violence and harassment. Only 2% of all garment laborers earn a living wage. Popular fast-fashion brand SHEIN pays workers only 4 cents per garment and forces its workers into 18-hour workdays, with only one day off per month.

 205.
The fashion industry also fails to provide safe working conditions. In 2012, a factory fire at Ali Enterprises in Pakistan killed around 300 garment workers. Similarly, in 2013, Rana Plaza, a commercial garment building in Bangladesh, collapsed, killing over a thousand workers and injuring thousands more. One survivor, Shila Begum, noted that the weight of the concrete crushing her body resulted in the removal of her uterus. Soon after, over a thousand factories used by fast fashion companies were inspected and 80,000 safety-related issues were found.

 206.
It is important to note that we cannot consider the social impacts of fast fashion in isolation. According to former UN Special Rapporteur on climate change Ian Fry, the G20 accounts for 78% of emissions from 2010 to 2020 but other poorer countries bear the majority of the consequences for it. Therefore, those suffering human rights abuses are often also suffering the worst from its environmental impacts because the countries from where labor is outsourced are also the ones experiencing the worst climate change.

 207.
Our role as college students

 208.
By buying fast fashion, we are ignoring the exploitation of the environment and workers in the fashion industry and enabling a system that has gone unregulated for far too long. As Vanderbilt students, we are privileged to have access to the education and resources needed to allow us to seek change in the world. We must use that privilege for good instead of contributing to the degradation of the environment and international human rights by refusing to adjust our shopping habits. The neverending desire to accumulate material things is eating away at our morals. It’s time to ditch the cheap clothing and spend more money in favor of human rights and environmental justice.

 267.

 268.
It can be hard to justify spending hard-earned money on more expensive items, especially for students of low socioeconomic status. Moreover, a 2018 study conducted by Jin Su and Aihwa Chang found that college students are especially susceptible to the allure of fast fashion because classes and social activities leave little time for earning money, and wearing clothes that are “in style” contributes to socializing. However, waiting to purchase something and saving up to buy a higher-quality item is better for human rights, the environment and your bank account. Fast fashion may have a lower sticker price, but the poor quality of the clothing requires consumers to buy replacements more frequently. As a result, consumers could spend more money in the long run than if they invested in higher-quality items.

 269.
We are morally obligated to help those in need, especially when the clothes on our backs contribute to the problems they face.

 290.

When Vanderbilt finished with 39 team points and in 11th place at last year’s SEC Outdoor Championships, it was the program’s best result since 1999. This season, with a team score of 45 points and an eighth-place finish, the Commodores shattered that record-setting performance.

 291.
“We’ve really changed our mindset and the culture of the team,” director of track and field Althea Thomas said. “If you’re around us at a track meet or practice, it doesn’t matter who it is, you see this identity and it doesn’t change. I think that’s been the big difference.”

 292.
Vanderbilt’s 45 team points were scored by a mix of 10 student-athletes across 12 events. The festivities began on May 9, when freshman Bria Bennis — competing in the event for the first time in her career — finished fourth in the 10,000-meter with a time of 34 minutes and 11.38 seconds.

 293.
“[Bennis] comes from a high school in Illinois that’s very well known for its distance program,” Thomas said. “Her understanding of the sport and how great it is is just a little bit higher than some freshmen … [Bennis] has been dreaming of this since she’s been in 9th grade.”

 294.
On May 10, the Commodores notched their second and third scoring performances when graduate student Madison Murray and sophomore Marta Sivina finished fifth and sixth, respectively, in the heptathlon. Another freshman, Lena Gooden, found success in the long jump, finishing sixth and setting the school record at 6.17 meters.

 295.
The highlight of the competition came later in the day when graduate student Veronica Fraley threw a school-record 18.29 meters to win the shot put. Fellow graduate Sarah Omoregie also placed in the event, coming in seventh thanks to a throw of 17.02 meters.

 296.
“[Fraley] just wants to be great,” Thomas said. “She’s just able to be in an advanced course. We give a couple people a packet of work and she actually gets the whole dissertation.”

 297.
On May 11, the final day of the competition, the Commodores continued to stack up points. A 4×100-meter relay team composed of Gooden, Haley Bishop, Ella Escobar and Allyria McBride placed eighth with a time of 44.21 seconds. Remarkably, the weekend marked the first time that group of Commodores had ever run the event together.

 298.
Junior Julia Rosenberg added four more points to Vanderbilt’s team total when she finished fifth in the 1,500-meter with a time of 4:16.96.

 299.
After winning the shot put the day prior, Fraley added to an already legendary weekend by finishing second in the discus with a throw of 61.62 meters. Trailing Alida Van Daalen of Florida by only 0.17 meters, Fraley finished a whopping 4.97 meters ahead of the third-place finisher. The combination of Fraley’s two elite finishes gave her a partial claim to the Commissioner’s Trophy, awarded to the student-athlete who scores the most team points across all events.

 300.
Rounding out the weekend was sophomore Allyria McBride, who collected a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.44 seconds.

 301.
“We may not be perfect, but we understand the mission,” Thomas said. “That’s the definition of a good team.”

 302.
The Commodores now await invitations to the NCAA East Regionals in Lexington, Ky. from May 22-25. Selections will be announced by the NCAA on May 16.

The post Track and Field: Vanderbilt finishes in eighth place at SEC Outdoor Championships first appeared on The Vanderbilt Hustler.

 323.
“This is the second time this has happened, and I’ve tried not to jump to any conclusions, but it’s difficult to ignore at this point that it feels personally targeted,” Sliman said. “I’ve obviously been quite publicly critical of the current Vanderbilt administration, and this is a pretty sinister way that they are continuing to suppress voices that disagree with them.”

 324.
In an email to The Hustler, a university representative explained the selection process for student speakers at Graduates Day.

 325.
“Graduates Day has included a wide range of student speakers from students representing VSG and GSC [Graduate Student Council] to students representing various faiths,” the representative said. “This year, the university solicited nominations from schools and colleges to feature speakers for their academic achievements and contributions to the university.”

 364.

Face, neck, hands. This description of unacceptable tattoo locations in the professional world, or “job-stoppers,” has been ingrained into the minds of rising young adults since childhood. Whether due to the inherent stigma surrounding tattoos that associates them with criminality or the widely-held cultural beliefs that they are not given to upstanding citizens, tattoos often represent the dichotomy between the professional and the unprofessional.

 365.
Tattoos, however, are not the only job-stoppers. While a very visible tattoo can decrease your chances of getting a job in many conventional professional careers, so can piercings and unnatural hair colors. It is common for jobs to prohibit facial piercings or “excessive” ear piercings. More relaxed jobs may allow one nostril piercing or a septum ring, and possibly won’t even restrict the number of allowed ear piercings; but still, they draw the line by disallowing stretched ears or facial piercings aside from the nose.

 366.
In the search for a professional image, jobs discourage fun hair colors or unconventional hairstyles, pushing their employees into the box of conventionalism and stripping them of their self-expression. Even worse, this selectivity often extends beyond the restriction of intentional aesthetic choices and into what can only be described as discrimination.

 367.
While many companies are slowly adapting to the bodily-modified world — allowing for visible tattoos, some piercings and colored hair — many companies still lag behind, especially in the “professional” sector. Despite spending eight or more years on degrees alone, doctors are often required to cover up tattoos with long sleeves. Most medical professions, in general, follow suit. Lawyers, businessmen and management are simply not imagined to be tattooed, pierced or have colorful hair; therefore, they are informally barred from entering these professions if they do not cover themselves up or remove their body modifications when applicable.

 368.
It isn’t revolutionary to state that the possession of body modifications does not limit your ability to perform a job; in fact, such things can sometimes make people more approachable and humanized. In a medical context, for instance, someone who is afraid in a sterile, unfamiliar environment may strike up a conversation with a nurse about their tattoos and feel more at ease. Still, despite the intuitive nature of knowing that body modifications do not equal unqualification for certain jobs, many people still hold the belief that too many piercings or colorful hair define unprofessionalism.

 369.
In rejecting those who choose to express themselves in unique ways, you reject some of the most honest, genuine and determined candidates across the board. Workers with a strong sense of identity have, in my experience working with them, done a wonderful job of knowing their role and importance within a workplace. By rejecting people based on their appearance, you are only perpetuating the cookie-cutter aestheticism that is holding us back professionally. The more eccentricity is allowed in the workplace, the more normalized authenticity becomes for workers and the general public alike. There is no shortage of intolerance in the world today, and any step toward normalizing the acceptance of others as they are is a step in the right direction.

 429.
These stifling professional standards extend far beyond the basis of intentional body modification. Often, the vision of a “professional” is also exclusionary based on racial, religious or other unchangeable features. The story often goes that the very businesses that preach professionalism on the basis of not looking “offensive” also limit their employees’ ability to wear natural hair or religious dress. This rhetoric can be poisonous, extending past adult experiences into schools and limiting children’s self-expression.

 430.
Junior Helena Spigner expressed that she, along with many of her colleagues, has felt discriminated against on the basis of both her changeable and unchangeable characteristics.

 431.
“It is often difficult for myself and my peers to see ourselves as professionals. We are told that it is inappropriate for us to be ourselves [and] that our tattoos, hairstyles (cultural or not) and piercings are not appropriate for children to see,” Spigner said. “Children see tattoos, piercings, locs, braids, etc. every day, and our self-expressions should humanize rather than demonize us. Prior to having locs, I have been asked to style my hair in ‘neat’ ways, meaning that my natural curls should be covered or put into a slick ponytail that was bad for my scalp and self-esteem.”

 490.

 491.
Furthermore, Spigner emphasized that she has felt ostracized on the basis of her appearance and dialect as a Black American.

 492.
“We are asked to adhere to any and all European standards of beauty and professionalism. This often looks like asking people to change their hair, their cultural/religious clothing, and any other non-white practices,” Spigner said. “We are expected to speak Standard English which has been ‘standardized’ by white Americans and discredits the valuable contributions to language from speakers of African American Vernacular English (AAVE) and other dialects.”

 493.
Spigner’s points underline a very important point of contention for our current professional standards: they were built for those who developed the system in the first place. Such discriminatory systems exclude such a large portion of the population that I struggle to understand who they benefit. Is it offensive to exist in the body you were born into with the hair you grew naturally? Is it offensive to practice a religion publicly, when expressing some visible sign of devotion is obliged in most major religious practices? Most contentiously, is it offensive to express yourself publicly, tarnishing the businesses slowly engulfing your entire identity, just to make a living? When you take away everyone who falls into these exclusive categories of “unprofessional,” almost nobody is left at all. “Professionalism” has turned into a masquerade of meaningless, arbitrary rules that strip away all personality from the workforce.

 494.
I keep a dish on my desk for my jewelry when I take it out for job interviews, and I weigh my options for self-expression without stepping on the toes of my future boss. The frustration from my experiences has highlighted one key complaint against the conformity of professionalism: there should never have to be a choice between someone’s self-expression and career — even less so between culture and career — because a career should never have to take importance over identity.

Next, Vanderbilt took on the No. 1 Tennessee Volunteers for its penultimate SEC slate. Ultimately, the Volunteers took the series, winning the first two games by a combined margin of five runs, before Vanderbilt took the finale, shutting out Tennessee and avoiding another sweep.

 518.
After their losses to Tennessee, the Commodores hold an overall record of 34-18 and a conference record of 12-15, putting them in fifth place in the SEC East standings. The Commodores remain unranked nationally. As of May 8, D1 Baseball had Vanderbilt in the tournament as a three-seed in its projected Round of 64. 519.
The VandyBoys, despite the series loss, can still gather plenty of takeaways from this weekend, especially as they prepare for two paramount meetings—a series against Kentucky and the SEC Tournament—that could determine their postseason hopes.

 522.
In Vanderbilt’s clash against Georgia, one of its biggest problems was the lack of quality starts it got from its pitchers. Against the Volunteers, the Commodore arms did exactly what they needed to do to put their team in a position to win. Throughout the series, Vanderbilt’s starting pitchers, Bryce Cunningham, Carter Holton and JD Thompson, accounted for 17.2 innings, allowing just five runs and 15 hits. Thompson recorded the best start of his young career, going six innings and striking out a career-best nine batters, allowing just two hits and no runs. Although the other starting pitchers did not set any personal bests, they were still able to contain one of the nation’s most prolific offenses. When Cunningham was replaced, Vanderbilt had a one-run lead, and when Holton was replaced, Vanderbilt trailed by just one run. Ultimately, the pitching woes that Vanderbilt experienced this weekend were not on the starters; it was the bullpen. The starting pitching against the Volunteers proved that Vanderbilt’s staff is highly touted for a reason and showed that Cunningham, Holton and Thompson might just be the go-to three for the rest of the season.

 524.
Urgency to win

 525.
Under head coach Tim Corbin, Vanderbilt is used to winning. Winning is the standard, and because of that, games are approached with a business-as-usual attitude. However, Sunday showed a Vanderbilt team that knew that its whole season was riding on a victory. This attitude shift was palpable, and it showed that Vanderbilt could match the nation’s best, step-for-step, and, in Sunday’s case, even outperform them. The bats woke up from the start, the adrenaline was pumping and the opposing sides were exchanging words back and forth. Ultimately, Vanderbilt came out on top and while it’s impossible to predict now, the win might be a season turning point, just as Tennessee’s sweep over Vanderbilt was last year.

 526.
“[The win against Tennessee] is a tone setter for the rest of the season,” Thompson said. “We’re [going to] carry a lot of momentum into the SEC tournament and we’re going to get to the tournament. I feel very confident about it.”

 527.
Sunday displayed arguably the greatest baseball rivalry in the modern era, but more than that, it showed an urgency to win that Vanderbilt has not possessed all season. Furthermore, it showed an urgency that will be absolutely essential if the Commodores want to make a deep postseason run.

 528.
Devin Futrell might be the spark the bullpen needs

 529.
Junior left-hander Devin Futrell had a phenomenal week, starting on the mound against Louisville and pitching as a reliever against Tennessee. Futrell might be the team’s signal-caller for the rest of the season, with the bullpen struggling to hold leads and generate saves. In Vanderbilt’s win on Sunday, Futrell came in the game for three innings of work as the only reliever following Thompson’s six innings. Across those three innings, Futrell threw just 38 pitches, which tabbed him five strikeouts. He allowed just one hit, and not a single batter reached on balls. Futrell was electric on the mound, and two of his strikeouts came at the top of the ninth inning to put away the win. Despite not getting the traditional start, something he’s more than used to, Futrell offered something that the rest of the bullpen failed to do all weekend: he limited the opposing offense. Futrell is arguably one of the most experienced arms on Vanderbilt’s pitching staff, having pitched 188.2 innings across his three years on West End. This week showed that Futrell is back from the shoulder injury that kept him sidelined for four weeks and ready to serve whatever role his team needs. Going down the stretch, he may be the spark the bullpen requires.

 531.
Three down.

 532.
Bullpen blues

 533.
Vanderbilt’s bullpen underperformed against Tennessee. Across the losses on Friday and Saturday, Vanderbilt used five relievers, who were responsible for 67% of runs (10 of 15) it allowed, all of which were earned. The weight of the game was on the bullpen, and it came up short.

 534.
“We’ve got what we got unless Jesus comes into the picture,” Corbin said of the bullpen following Friday’s loss.

 535.
In SEC play, the Commodore bullpen has a combined 6.98 ERA and 45 BB. The bullpen is very young, with three of the five relievers used being freshmen. Still, juniors Greysen Carter (four earned runs) and Ryan Ginther (one earned run) proved that it was more than just a freshman issue. Injuries to Sawyer Hawkes and Ethan McElvain certainly don’t help the situation, either. The reality is that Vanderbilt’s relief is going to need to be better, especially in high-leverage situations, if it wants to win games.

 536.
Lacking power on offense

 537.
This narrative is not a new one, but the one thing Vanderbilt’s offense lacks is a lineup with prolific power hitters. The VandyBoys are ranked in the bottom half of the SEC in slugging percentage (No. 10, .478), on-base percentage (No. 13, .378) and home runs (No. 13, 58). This power gap becomes painfully obvious against teams like Tennessee, which ranks at the top of the categories mentioned. Tennessee got more distance out of its swings, with multiple cuts that seemed defensive turning into home runs. While other SEC opponents possess one to two guys who are hitting 16+ home runs each year, Vanderbilt does not have any players within the top 15 of the SEC in batting average, slugging percentage or runs scored. Braden Holcomb seems the most likely candidate for possessing the power that Vanderbilt needs to compete in the SEC, but he has yet to truly show it. Repeatedly, the Vanderbilt coaching staff has expressed that it is not concerned with the lack of power hitters on the team. Still, many of Vanderbilt’s wins and losses have seemingly come down to just that. At this point in the season, the team’s power-hitting will not experience a complete 180-degree turn. Still, this should be a source of real evaluation and stress for the coaching staff moving forward, whether that means developing the guys Vanderbilt already has or bringing in new ones.

 538.
Failure to consistently put runs on the board

 539.
Against Tennessee, and especially in SEC play, Vanderbilt has failed to put runs on the board at a consistent rate. This often results in two things: One, the offense scrambles to put together a rally at the last moment, or two, the young bullpen is put in an increasingly high-leverage situation. Don’t get me wrong; the Vanderbilt bullpen has certainly left more to be desired in these situations, and the offense isn’t entirely responsible for those shortcomings. However, the offense could ease that pressure by consistently putting runs on the board. In the first game of the series, Tennessee put up five runs in the eighth, while Vanderbilt failed to put a single run on the board through the final three innings of play. Despite the win on Sunday, the Black and Gold offense struggled in the later parts of the game, as its three runs came in the first two innings. Saturday was the team’s most consistent day at the plate, with runs coming across the plate in four of nine innings, yet the Commodores’ ninth-inning rally came up just short. Generating hits individually is not the issue for Vanderbilt, as it ranks sixth in the SEC with 486. So, if hits are not the issue, then what is? The answer is runs batted in.

 540.
First-baseman RJ Austin leads the team with 48 RBIs, yet he ranks outside the top 15 in the SEC in that statistic. Most of Vanderbilt’s top SEC foes have more than one individual within the top 15 of this list. For example, Tennessee has both Dylan Dreiling and Christian Moore tied at No. 8 for RBIs in the SEC at 56-apiece. Furthermore, these players sit at different spots within the Volunteers’ order, at first and sixth, meaning the team generates RBIs throughout its offensive rotation. Having a player like Austin at the top of the lineup who can reliably hit in runners is certainly beneficial, but Vanderbilt lacks another consistent bat to do the same thing at the bottom of the order.

 541.
Vanderbilt will travel to Lexington, Ky., from May 16 to 18 to face No. 2 Kentucky in its final SEC matchup of the season.

The post Three up, three down: Vanderbilt drops third series in a row, falls to Tennessee first appeared on The Vanderbilt Hustler.

 563.
Virginia cruised on the doubles courts, with the No, 88 pairing of Meggie Navarro and Sara Ziodato defeating Vanderbilt’s Anessa Lee and Amy Stevens, 6-1. Their win was followed by a close 7-5 victory for the No. 47 duo of Hibah Shaikh and Natasha Subhash over Bridget Stammel and Valeria Ray. The 2-0 sweep by Virginia in doubles left Célia-Belle Mohr and Holly Staff’s match unfinished.

 564.
In singles, it was once again all Virigina. No. 125 Elaine Chervinsky was the first to strike for the Cavaliers, defeating Staff 6-1, 6-2; and Subhash followed suit with her own 6-3, 6-2 victory over Ray. With Virginia up 3-0 and the Commodores one more loss away from elimination, No. 13 Mohr secured a comeback win against No. 25 Shaikh 4-6, 6-1, 6-1. The Mohr victory only helped the Commodores stay afloat for a little while longer, as Melodie Collard’s 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Stevens propelled the Cavaliers into the elite eight.

 565.
The Commodores finished the season with a 14-11 record, with six of those wins coming in the SEC. Their bid to the NCAA tournament also marks their 29th consecutive year appearing in the regionals. Vanderbilt ended the season with two individual SEC honors, as well: Mohr was selected to the First Team All-SEC for the second year, and Ray was honored as a member of the All-Freshman team.

 566.
While the season is over for the Commodores on the whole, two individual athletes have more tennis ahead of them. Mohr has qualified to compete in both the NCAA Singles Championship, as well as the NCAA Doubles Championship, where she’ll be paired with Lee. Both competitions are scheduled to take place in Stillwater, Okla., and are scheduled for May 20-25.
