39.
Latest data showed Ireland's economy returned to growth in the first quarter of 2024, following five consecutive quarters of contraction, thanks to activity in the technology sector.

  40.
According to preliminary data from the Central Statistics Office (CSO), gross domestic product (GDP) rose 1.1 percent from January to March compared to the previous three months.

  41.
The earlier decline was largely due to a decline in exports that sent the economy into a technical recession.

  42.
“Today’s release estimates that GDP grew by 1.1 percent in volume terms in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the fourth quarter of 2023,” said CSO statistician Enda Behan.

  43.
The increase was “due to an increase in the multinational-dominated information and communications sector,” he said.

  44.

  45. Advertisement – Scroll to continue
  46.

  47.
However, Behan stressed that GDP actually fell by 0.8 percent compared to the same quarter in 2023.

  48.
The preliminary data comes from a report last month that said the Irish economy would grow throughout 2024.

  49.
“In contrast to 2023, we expect all key indicators of economic activity to record positive growth in 2024 and 2025, indicating likely stable growth over this period,” said Professor Kieran McQuinn from the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI).

  75.
After an extended period of sideways consolidation, Bitcoin experienced a downtrend and touched the key support zone around $60,000. However, expectations point to a resurgence in buying pressure, which could potentially lead to a recovery.

  76.
Technical analysis

  77.
By Shayan

  78.
The daily chart

  79.
A comprehensive look at the daily chart reveals an extended period of sideways consolidation within the crucial $60,000-$72,000 price range, with recent price action recording a decline towards the lower boundary of this range.

  80.
Currently, Bitcoin is in a crucial support zone located between the 0.5 ($62,181) and 0.618 ($59,444) Fibonacci retracement levels, coinciding with the key 100-day moving average at $59,000.

  81.
This support area is significant and could trigger a bullish reversal in the short term. However, a sudden and unexpected breach of this critical level could trigger a long squeeze event, resulting in a significant downward move.

  82.
Source: TradingView

  83.
The 4 hour chart

  84.
Analysis of the 4-hour chart shows increased selling pressure after Bitcoin failed to reclaim the upper boundary of the descending wedge. This resulted in a noticeable downtrend towards the lower trendline of the wedge, which hovered around $60,000.

  85.
Upon reaching this crucial level, selling pressure was met with sufficient demand, resulting in a minor period of consolidation. However, sellers remain eager to break the lower boundary of the wedge.

  86.
If buyers regain control and price finds support near this critical level, a bullish rally towards the previous major swing high of $68,000 could unfold. Nonetheless, the $60,000 level currently represents the primary reference point for Bitcoin, with price action around it likely to determine the cryptocurrency's near-term trajectory.

  87.
Source: TradingView

  88.
On-chain analysis

  89.
By Shayan

  90.
Bitcoin continues to be in an extended period of consolidation, with the price approaching the $60,000 threshold. Given this scenario, an in-depth study of sentiment analysis in the futures market can provide valuable insights into its possible trajectory.

  91.
The chart provided provides insight into funding rates, a crucial metric that measures the dominance of buyers or sellers in driving market dynamics. Upon closer inspection, the recent corrective corrections have resulted in a significant decline in funding rates and are approaching levels close to zero.

  92.
This downturn represents a favorable development in the long term as it reduces the pressure for further liquidations and lays the foundation for the resurgence of long and short positions in the perpetual market. Consequently, the market appears poised to initiate a renewed momentum trend and end the prevailing period of uncertainty and sideways consolidation.

  113.
It’s getting nervy for fans of teams at both ends of the Scottish Premiership table, with the league title and relegation still to be decided.

  114.
Here’s a collection of your thoughts after another thrilling weekend of action:

  115.
Celtic remain three points clear at the top of the table after a 2-1 win in Dundee, matching Rangers scoreline away to St Mirren. But the reigning champions’ fans were not satisfied with the performance – apart from James Forrest’s double in a rare start for the Scotland winger.

  116.
Aaron: Celtic were excellent in the first half and looked really comfortable in the game with an excellent finish from James Forrest. Looked a bit out of steam in the second half. However, three points is the most important thing.

  117.
Gordy: Well done James Forest. Been a great servant to the club and not always appreciated. Nicolas Kuhn nowhere near good enough. Hopefully we are saving the big performances for the bigger games, but at the end of the day, three points and the result were the important things.

  118.
Ken: Another eye-bleeding performance under Brendan Rodgers. We need to wrap James Forrest up in cotton wool and drop Liam Scales if we want to win the double.

  119.
Billy: If it wasn’t for James Forrest’s goals, Celtic would have been lucky to get away with a point at Dundee. And what was Adam Idah doing so far back in defence to score an own goal? Not at the top of their game at this stage of the season when they need to be. Hopefully they’ll pick up in the last few games, especially against Rangers and the cup final.

  120.
Andy: Far from convincing, but James Forest took his goals well. We don’t defend well again for their goal but got the job done. Right now, every Celtic fan will take four more 2-1s and get this season over. I honestly can’t say it’s been a good season, but amazingly enough, we could still end with a double. The board need to step up and spend this summer.

  121.
Billy: I feel we struggled again in the second half and, when Dundee scored, we started to panic at the back. James Forrest still got it. A few others should be watching him and learn what to do.

  122.
Peter: James Forrest! What more can you say about the truly Celtic great? It is, and has been, a pleasure and privilege to watch him for over a decade.

  123.
John: Average performance, but another three points in the bag. We just need to keep winning at this point. Work to do in the summer. We need more pace out wide and more solidity in defence and midfield. This could still be an excellent season.

  124.
Anon: It’s was a thriller from start to finish. James forrest was tge diffrence with his 2 goals and his class showed throughout. Dundee got back into the game but celtic held on for a deserved win Mark of champions

  125.
Neil: I’ve been saying for a long time that James Forrest is a better option than Nicolas Kuhn despite the fact Nico has had a couple of good performances. We need to stick with Jamesie for the run in. He deserves so much more respect from our support.

  126.
Andy: Another below-par performance, but a win nonetheless. Callum McGregor no were near fit and should not start. Wide men except James Forrest far to unpredictable and wee Kyogo the same.

  127.
Andrew: Another tick off the sheet. Comfortable win despite the own goal creating nerves that weren’t really there. Three out of four games now at home. Plus a significant goal difference. We can’t blow it now.

  128.
Anon: Callum McGregor and Reo Hatate are not controlling midfield the way they used to. Tomoki Iwata is not the answer as he backs off too often. We are used to lots of possession, but the lack of penetration is evident and we cannot cope with big strong players running at us. Really worried about the Kilmarnock game especially.

  129.
Patrick: Disappointing our “best winger”, James Forrest, is only getting his fourth start yet still providing goals. Baffling to everyone. We look nervy defending and attacking corners – and in general! Need to be stronger mentally. A lot of frustrated faces on the pitch.

  130.
Ian: Front three not producing enough. Still vulnerable at the back. Go 3-5-2 – Hart, Johnston, Carter-Vickers, Nawrocki, Scales, Taylor, O’Riley, Iwata and Hatate with Idah and Forrest up front!

  131.
Anon: There was nothing “team like” about that display. Lost chickens more like. Centre forward scoring own goal, captain converting to a defensive midfielder – totally lost, passes completed must be near zero. Thanks to James Forrest for this win. Can’t attack at corners, can’t defend at corners.

  132.
Rangers fans were also critical of their side despite their win in Paisley.

  133.
Anon: Our application and desire is just not there. We are nowhere near aggressive enough and find it increasingly difficult to put our authority into games. Far too many passengers in our team and a clear-out is very much required at the season’s end.

  134.
Dougie: Dull as dishwater. Someone needs to tell the Rangers squad there is a league to play for. Fabio Silva needs dropped. James Tavernier needs moved up so we can put in a right-back that stays in position.

  135.
Allan: I was delighted to get the three points, it was a tough match. A grind of a result, showing resilience and character. As a Rangers fan, I would never say an opponent was man of the match, but Alex Gogic was the man of the match.

  136.
Steven: Got away with one. On another day, ref calls a foul for a slight push by Cyriel Dessers for the second goal. Albeit it would have been soft, but we’ve seen them given. Leon Balogun once again solid. Age is against him, but he’s been better in two games than Connor Goldson has all season. Sadly, too many players don’t look up for the fight. Todd Cantwell plays in flashes.

  137.
Adrian: Woeful defending again. It’s blatantly clear that this is where the clearance must start. Lack of concentration, positioning sense and pace.

  138.
Ronnie: Three points but yet another struggle. We just cannot seem to get a tempo going in games and our defensive lapses continue to punish us. We got away with one here. Jack Butland once again kept us in title Race and Cyriel Dessers gets his goal. But so many players have totally lost form at the crucial period.

  139.
Frazer: Cyriel Dessers is winning the fans over with every game that passes. Twenty goals isn’t a bad return. Actually getting some support from the Rangers fans might turn him into the goalscorer we need. Todd Cantwell and Mohamed Diomande are huge for Rangers at the moment in midfield.

  140.
Martin: Three points in the bag, but we need to be more aggressive, move the ball faster, basically score more goals. The Old Firm game is a must win. Still feel Celtic will drop points.

  141.
Jimmy: We just have to keep winning and hopefully win the Old Firm game. We are playing much better without Connor Goldson. I think the midfield were in total control and John Lundstrum controlled everything we did.

  142.
Image caption, St Mirren came close to securing at least a point against Rangers

  143.
St Mirren fans think their fifth-top side deserved more from the game.

  144.
William: In this game of missed chances, we could have won it, but we were left sharing the frustration with Stephen Robinson. Deserving won’t get you points, putting the ball in the net does. The effort could not be faulted and that same effort needs to go into the remaining games.

  145.
Anon: Did Cyriel Dessers push James Bolton, or was it a slip? More quality refereeing.

  146.
Ryan: Tremendous performance from the boys. Couldn’t have asked any more. Undone by perplexing decisions made by the clowns supposed to be officials. Rangers’ winning goal a clear foul on our defender and another, without crying conspiracy, clear red card for Jack Butland on Toyosi Olusanya.

  147.
Dougie: Very unfortunate not to get at least a point, if not all three. Jack Butland saved Rangers from a defeat. Special mention for Alex Gogic – he was immense (as he has been all season) and the commitment and determination to save Saints from losing a third goal with his clearance characterises his attitude – absolutely amazing.

  148.
Likewise, Dundee fans were encouraged by their side’s performance against the champions and are looking forward to facing St Mirren next weekend in a game that could decide who finishes fifth and qualifies for European football.

  149.
Anon: Really good to watch. Great spirit in team. Sure to add to side next term. Manager runs a tight ship. The club owners need to invest in the stadium structure. It’s shocking.

  150.
Ian: Another full-blooded performance from the Dee. Shot ourselves in the foot for the second goal. But showed resilience in pressing the game in the last 15 minutes. This season has been the most I have enjoyed watching my team since the Claudio Caniggia era. Playing skilful soccer with full commitment.

  151.
Doug: Dundee went toe-to-toe with Celtic and can count themselves unlucky not to have managed at least a draw. On this showing, Dundee should be very encouraged about getting the points to leapfrog St Mirren for a crack at Europe next season. Next week is the big one.

  152.
Hearts are happy that their side remain safe in third place after their draw with fourth-top Kilmarnock.

  153.
Mike: Probably one of the best performances of the season. The only thing missing was the goals. I felt that Hearts controlled the majority of the game and defended well against a dangerous Kilmarnock team, who were not at their best. Cammy Devlin man of the match, with honourable mentions for the three central defenders and Beni Baningime.

  154.
Chris: We controlled the game and were unlucky not to leave with three points. Lawrence Shankland again struggled. Hoping his form has an upturn so we can watch him at the Euros.

  155.
Keith: Decent performance and another clean sheet, but we need to start taking the chances our good play is creating.

  156.
Kilmarnock fans were also satisfied with a point.

  157.
Anon: Hard-earned point. We played our best football in the last quarter of the game when our three subs injected new life into our play. Although we didn’t trouble their keeper till late in the game, we may well have taken three points but for an excellent late save. Happy with the point as the woodwork came to our rescue in the first half.

  158.
Adam: Good draw, game of two halves. Hearts good first half, Kilmarnock in the second and nearly stole the game in the last minute, unlucky! Overall, a good 0-0 draw.

  159.
Anna: Always going to be tough against Hearts and the 0-0 proved that. We couldn’t create many chances of note, but the defence was resolute and strong. Shows how much Derek McInnes has improved things in the squad. Not losing could mean a point closer to a European place next season and that would be a richly deserved reward.

  160.
David: Strong first-half performance by Hearts petered out in second half. Killie grew into the game second half despite poor refereeing decisions. Fair point for both teams – overall great defensive display by Killie – and Lewis Mayo must be knocking on Scotland boss Steve Clarke’s door given list of injury doubts.

  161.
Image caption, Hibs’ win leaves third-bottom St Johnstone deep in relegation trouble

  162.
Hibs fans critical of their head coach have not been appeased by the 3-1 win away to St Johnstone.

  163.
Sandy: Great result but no doubt there’s going to be the usual moans – “should have been seven, should have kept a clean sheet”. Leave the coaching to Nick Montgomery, that was a good enough scoreline and the football was worth the watch or listen. The team did well.

  164.
Kenny: A much better performance from the team, but really too little, too late. The season’s been one to forget. Nick Montgomery’s tactics have been poor and I keep thinking the job’s too big for him. Playing out from the back has been his downfall, but he won’t admit it. He is not direct enough and his body language doesn’t inspire confidence. He needs to go.

  165.
Marcus: I’ve been as disappointed as any Hibee this season, but I’ve decided to lay off hating on the manager and give him my backing instead. Travelling up on Saturday, I had a good feeling and I’m glad I was proved right against an admittedly poor Saints side. It could have been double figures with a bit more composure! Onwards and upwards, let’s finish well.

  166.
Anon: Typical Hibs – win when it doesn’t matter.

  167.
George: One down, four to go. Too early to conclude anything, except that St Johnstone are dire. Still, we managed to concede one and, on a couple of occasions, nearly threw away two more. On positive side, we made a bucket-load of chances but failed to take most. Monty’s right: it should’ve been eight.

  168.
David: Nick Montgomery had 29 league games to achieve top-six finish, so winning against a side in 10th in a dead rubber doesn’t change my mind. Funny how leaving out duds like Nectarios Triantis and Jair Tavares works. All a bit late. However, results and performances like Saturday in the remaining four matches will see him around next term I suspect.

  169.
Cam: A performance that is too little, too late. We actually played really well going forward and should have scored more, but this should have been the kind of grit and determination shown throughout the whole season, not in the bottom six. Hopefully the players learn from that.

  170.
Darren: It’ll all boil down to what quality comes in next season and if they don’t hit the ground running then the fans will be shouting for Monty’s head real quick! It’s this reason that makes me think that bringing in a new manager now is probably for the best. Were an unforgiving bunch at Easter Road.

  171.
Aberdeen fans had mixed feelings about their 1-0 win over Motherwell, who had been reduced to 10 men before the winner.

  172.
Niall: Precious three points, but the Dons should have made it much more comfortable. The lack of clinical finishing is a concern that has plagued us for months. Junior Hoilett was the standout player and Leighton Clarkson worked hard in midfield. Another clean sheet gives Peter Leven real credit for steadying the rearguard. Same again next week with more goals please.

  173.
Fred: We only came to life after the sending off. We just seem unable to press for the whole game and, in all honesty, the team was flat for 60 minutes. Great to win, but we need new players with energy and fight. Junior Holiett showed great quality. We need more like him, a seasoned professional.

  174.
Andrew: Still work to do before next season, but this makes us safe in all likelihood. The last 10 minutes were chaotic, which worries fans and management. We do not caress the ball in possession or defend effectively. A manager with tactical insight and real man-management skills is urgently needed. Again, Esker Sokler’s chance was fluffed, emphatically.

  175.
Andrew: “Cometh the hour, cometh the man.” Step forward Peter Leven, who has single-handedly restored confidence in both the players and the Aberdeen fans. No small feat this season. Jimmy Thelin 100% needs Leven’s coaching skills and player management next season. Makes you wonder where we would be if Neil Warnock had never darkened our door. He cost us top six.

  176.
Duncan: Back to the league and, as expected, we dropped our standards like we did after the European games. However, the clearly knackered team dug deep and deserved the win. We actually played some good football at times. Points in the bag, job done, move on.

  177.
Anon: I think we are safe now. Peter Leven has done an amazing job to steady the ship.

  178.
Kieran: Very important and good result. Keeps us out of reach of the play-off place while hopefully giving confidence to the squad. Maybe Junior Hoilett is worth a one-year contract.

  179.
Jonny: I’m a Don but thought the red card was harsh. Really unfortunate for Jack Vale, who was tracking the ball from the other direction. Nasty one, but no malice.

  180.
Eric: Three points and a clean sheet, all you can ask for. The 4-2-3-1 system seems to work for the players and some, for the first time in a long time, seemed to be enjoying it. Four more games, four more good results hopefully. Would now like to see some extended contracts being sorted out before it’s too late.

  181.
Motherwell supporters seem a bit disillusioned.

  182.
George: Disappointed we didn’t go for a more attacking line-up. Jack Vale was too deep, Blair Spittal is no longer interested in working really hard, Georgie Gent was asked to do too much. Too tame and lacking in real intent. Wish this season was over.

  183.
Grant: Yet again, another dreadful decision by the ref that wasn’t overturned by VAR. That’s a couple of times against Aberdeen that we have been cheated and lost points. It’s as if they are the bigger team so they are getting the decisions rather than what’s right.

  184.
Anon: Rubbish, just rubbish.

  185.
St Johnstone fans are even more downbeat about their chances of avoiding relegation.

  186.
Ally: Probably the poorest performance I’ve seen from Saints. Watching the players’ efforts and reactions to going two goals down was very disappointing. Too many negative players, a pure reflection of our management team. The chairman needs to remove Craig Levein and Andy Kirk immediately and put Alex Cleland in charge until the end of the season.

  187.
Jason: Gutless, leaderless and going to end up going down. Ryan McGowan said they needed the fans – we needed a team to show so fight and passion, but we got neither. Craig Levein says it was a good week in training, but they can’t even pass 10 yards – disgraceful.

  188.
Anon: Too many backward passes when a forward one may create a chance/mistake. Need to get rid of the negative mindset, so thanks Craig Levein, but yer number’s up. I thought he was the answer, but I was wrong. Said it here before, play-offs are us.

  189.
Jackie: Apart from Dimitar Mitov, I don’t rate any player in this team that will save us from relegation. We just don’t play as a team. Craig Levein hasn’t done anything to help us since he took over as manager. Four games now to save our season. Can’t see it happening.

  190.
Gordon: I actually cannot bring myself to even listen to Craig Levein any more. The only thing I can reasonably think is that dismissing Levein and Kirk might save us. If they remain in charge, we will sleepwalk our way to relegation. They have been proved over and over and over again of being unable to even do the basic thing of motivating the players. The baw is bust.

  191.
Anon: I thought Craig Levein was a safe option to keep us up. 1-0 up at Dens Park in January, we were actually sixth in the league. Too many players playing the season out as they are out of contract. We are going down via play-off. Form says we deserve to be relegated.

  192.
More blues for Ross County fans as defeat by Livingston means the Dingwall side are only nine points clear of the bottom-placed hosts with four games left.

  193.
David: This was an opportunity missed. We were second to the ball, timid in approach most of the time and lacking in confidence. While we might blame the pitch and referee for not giving us a break, the fact is that Livingston wanted it more. They were aggressive from the start, pressuring County in possession and not backing down.

  194.
Alistair: I am not confident this County team are able to secure the relegation play-off place. Even if they can hold Livingston off, they will struggle against any of the Championship teams currently in the running to meet them. If that is the case, I hope Inverness Caledonian Thistle will still be there waiting for us and we get to resume the much-missed Highland derby.

  195.
Livingston still only have an outside chance of avoiding bottom spot, but Saturday’s win lifted the mood.

  196.
Jennifer: Best display this season, everyone contributed, everyone was solid. We actually came out the stadium feeling proud of them.
The post Old Firm concern despite victories – fan views first appeared on TRADING U.

  222.
Who was Emma Stone before she was Emma Stone? Someone who is a little different. She may have found fame in teen comedies like “Superbad” and “Easy A” – and went on to win two Oscars for “La La Land” and “Poor Things” – but the one thing the actress wants most is to be in to be called her real name: Emily.

  223.

  224.
After her co-star in The Curse, Nathan Fielder, revealed that the actress considers Emma to be her professional name and calls her Emily or Em between takes, Stone was asked how she would react if fans called her her real one would name names. 'That would be so nice. “I want to be Emily,” she said, explaining that she originally chose Emma as her stage name because there was another Emily Stone who was registered with the actors' union SAG.

  225.

  226.
Her original names were Riley Stone and Emily J Stone. According to childhood Spice Girls fan Emma, Baby Spice Emma Bunton played a big role in the name change. “As I get to know them, so do the people I work with [call me Emily],' She said. “Then I freaked out a few years ago. For some reason I thought, 'I can't do it anymore.' Just call me Emily.' Nathan calls me Em, which is easier.'

  227.

  228.
However, Emma isn't the only star with an unexpected name change. Some of these are predictable, but others are downright shocking. Here are 10 celebrities you might not know have very different names in real life.

  234.
Most of us know “I Kissed A Girl” singer Katy Perry for her fun and camp pop. But before she was famous, Perry was a less successful gospel singer who went by her real name Katy Hudson (short for Kathryn Hudson). She later changed it to “Katy Perry” due to its similarities to a certain “How To Lose A Guy In 10 Days” star.

  235.

  236.
Bruno Mars

  237.

  238.
Let's be honest: Bruno Mars would never be the singer's real name, right? But did you know that his real name is Peter Gene Hernandez and that the nickname Bruno came because his father thought he looked like wrestler Bruno Sammartino? In 2012, he said that he added Mars because “I felt like I didn't have any oomph, and a lot of girls say I'm out of this world, so I thought I was from Mars.” The name change had another impact: it prevented people from stereotyping Bruno and asking him to sing in Spanish.

  244.
Given the power of a stage persona, pop stars think most about their name. Since he was born into a celebrity family, it's a whole different ballgame. As the child of country singer Billy Ray Cyrus, pop star Miley was named Destiny Hope Cyrus. Sounds like a pretty famous name, but her parents gave her the nickname “Smiley” as a child because of her sunny disposition, and it stuck.

  247.

  248.
Black Swan star Natalie Portman was actually born Natalie Hershlag and took her stage name from her grandmother's maiden name. But even though Natalie made her film debut at the age of 13, she hated being known by her stage name at school. “I was very supportive of it very early on,” she told Vanity Fair. “I would be upset if someone called me Natalie Portman at school. I thought, “If you know me, you know me as Natalie Hershlag in school.”

  278.
Like John Legend, Jamie Foxx is a name that's too slick to be real. But when Eric Marlon Bishop (yes, really) began his career in stand-up comedy, he chose Jamie Foxx for a rather unusual reason. Because there were so few female comics, he felt they tended to be booked into more casts, and so wanted a unisex name. Jamie Foxx was born.

  349.
Bitcoin and the broader cryptocurrency market fell on Monday as investors and speculators prepared for a key Federal Reserve meeting later this week.

  350.
Anticipation grew over the meeting's possible signs of higher interest rates in the longer term, prompting market participants to prepare for possible impacts on digital assets.

  351.
Bitcoin fell to a weekly low of $61,928 in early trading on Monday, but then recovered slightly to trade at $62,387, down about 2% at press time.

  352.
Demand for about a dozen U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs remains moderate. Bitcoin's 2024 rise has slowed to over 47% from over 70% in mid-March, when the cryptocurrency hit a record high of nearly $74,000.

  353.
The Federal Reserve is expected to announce a rate decision on May 1 this week, with the probability that rates will remain stable at 95.6%. On May 3, the United States will also release its unemployment rate for April. Expectations of an interest rate cut in the US have also declined this year.

  354.
Speculation ahead of the Federal Reserve meeting has fueled debate among market participants about the possible direction of interest rates and their impact on digital assets. Higher interest rates are perceived as a headwind for risk assets like Bitcoin.

  355.
As the Federal Reserve prepares to meet and provide insight into its outlook on interest rates and monetary policy, market participants will be watching developments closely and parsing statements for clues about the central bank's intentions. Any signals pointing to a more hawkish stance on interest rates could further unsettle digital asset markets, while a dovish tone could provide respite for investors seeking stability.

  356.
BTC price expectations remain even after the halving

  357.
The fourth Bitcoin halving took place this month, resulting in a 50% drop in supply inflation and an increase in issuance scarcity. The halving, an important and highly publicized event, naturally triggers further discussions about its impact on BTC price developments.

  358.
A total of 19.68 million BTC was mined and issued, representing 93.75% of the total supply of 21 million BTC. This means that around 1.312 million BTC will be issued over the next 126 years. A total of 50% of the remaining supply of 1.312 million BTC will be mined between the fourth and fifth halvings.

  386.
Bitcoin (BTC) traded at a slight premium in Japanese markets on Monday as the weakening yen (JPY) suddenly shifted gears and rose sharply against the greenback, showing every sign of central bank intervention.

  387.
The Bitcoin-Japanese Yen (BTC/JPY) pair on leading Japanese crypto exchange bitFlyer was trading at a premium of about 0.2% to the dollar price of Bitcoin on Nasdaq-listed Coinbase (COIN), data from charts showed from TradingView show. CoinDesk contacted bitFlyer for comment and was awaiting a response as of press time.

  388.
The leading cryptocurrency by market value has continuously achieved a premium in JPY terms in recent weeks. Earlier this month, the premium rose as high as 1.49%, its highest level since March 2020, a sign that traders were diversifying into alternative assets to avoid yen volatility.

  389.
“Currently, the Bitcoin premium in Japanese markets is around 0.3% to 0.4%, having declined from over 1% in mid-April to an annual high of 1.7% in mid-March. However, this could change. Overall, FX volatility is rising due to increasingly divergent monetary policy expectations and geopolitical tensions, and this could impact cryptocurrencies,” Dessislava Aubert, an analyst at Paris-based Kaiko, told CoinDesk.

  390.
The yen fluctuated wildly on Monday in a holiday-thinned Japanese trading session, first sliding to 160 percent in points (pips) per U.S. dollar, its lowest level in 34 years, then rising 500 pips to 155 in early European trading Pips per USD to recover hrs.

  391.
The speed and scale of the recovery led to talk of BOJ intervention or dollar sales to set a floor for the yen. Local media neither confirmed nor denied the BOJ's rumored action. They said low liquidity and caution over possible central bank action near 160 pips led to the yen's sudden rise.

  392.
The yen has fallen out of favor with investors as growing government debt prevents the Bank of Japan (BOJ) from matching U.S. interest rates. In other words, Japan's financial crisis has affected the foreign exchange market.

  393.
The Federal Reserve (Fed) will hold a policy meeting this week where it could emphasize the need to keep interest rates at 5.25% for longer amid ongoing inflation.

  394.
Last week, the BOJ left key interest rates unchanged at 0-0.1% after raising them above zero earlier this year. The central bank maintained extremely loose monetary policy during the Fed's 2022-2023 tightening cycle, motivating traders to sell the yen.

  409.

  410.
As a young GI at Fort Ord in Monterey County, California, Dean Osborn spent much of his time in the oceanside woodlands, training on soil and guzzling water from streams and aquifers now known to be contaminated with cancer-causing pollutants.

  411.
“They were marching the snot out of us,” he said, recalling his year and a half stationed on the base, from 1979 to 1980. He also remembers, not so fondly, the poison oak pervasive across the 28,000-acre installation that closed in 1994. He went on sick call at least three times because of the overwhelmingly itchy rash.

  412.
Mounting evidence shows that as far back as the 1950s, in an effort to kill the ubiquitous poison oak and other weeds at the Army base, the military experimented with and sprayed the powerful herbicide combination known colloquially as Agent Orange.

  413.
While the U.S. military used the herbicide to defoliate the dense jungles of Vietnam and adjoining countries, it was contaminating the land and waters of coastal California with the same chemicals, according to documents.

  414.
The Defense Department has publicly acknowledged that during the Vietnam War era it stored Agent Orange at the Naval Construction Battalion Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, and the former Kelly Air Force Base in Texas, and tested it at Florida’s Eglin Air Force Base.

  415.
According to the Government Accountability Office, however, the Pentagon’s list of sites where herbicides were tested went more than a decade without being updated and lacked specificity. GAO analysts described the list in 2018 as “inaccurate and incomplete.”

  416.
Fort Ord was not included. It is among about four dozen bases that the government has excluded but where Pat Elder, an environmental activist, said he has documented the use or storage of Agent Orange.

  417.
According to a 1956 article in the journal The Military Engineer, the use of Agent Orange herbicides at Fort Ord led to a “drastic reduction in trainee dermatitis casualties.”

  418.
“In training areas, such as Fort Ord, where poison oak has been extremely troublesome to military personnel, a well-organized chemical war has been waged against this woody plant pest,” the article noted.

  419.
Other documents, including a report by an Army agronomist as well as documents related to hazardous material cleanups, point to the use of Agent Orange at the sprawling base that 1.5 million service members cycled through from 1917 to 1994.

  428.
‘The Most Toxic Chemical’

  429.
Agent Orange is a 50-50 mixture of two ingredients, known as 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. Herbicides with the same chemical structure slightly modified were available off the shelf, sold commercially in massive amounts, and used at practically every base in the U.S., said Gerson Smoger, a lawyer who argued before the Supreme Court for Vietnam veterans to have the right to sue Agent Orange manufacturers. The combo was also used by farmers, forest workers, and other civilians across the country.

  430.
The chemical 2,4,5-T contains the dioxin 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin or TCDD, a known carcinogen linked to several cancers, chronic conditions and birth defects. Still, the other weed killer, 2,4-D is sold off-the-shelf today.

  431.
“The bottom line is TCDD is the most toxic chemical that man has ever made,” Smoger said.

  432.

A 1962 article in California Agriculture includes before and after photos showing the effectiveness of chemical brush control used in a live oak woodland at Fort Ord, citing 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T, the chemicals in Agent Orange.(Provided by the Regents of the University of California)

  433.
For years, the Department of Veteran Affairs has provided vets who served in Vietnam disability compensation for diseases considered to be connected to exposure to Agent Orange for military use from 1962 to 1975.

  434.
Decades after Osborn’s military service, the 68-year-old veteran, who never served in Vietnam, has battled one health crisis after another: a spot on his left lung and kidney, hypothyroidism, and prostate cancer, an illness that has been tied to Agent Orange exposure.

  435.
He says many of his old buddies from Fort Ord are sick as well.

  436.
“Now we have cancers that we didn’t deserve,” Osborn said.

  437.
The VA considers prostate cancer a “presumptive condition” for Agent Orange disability compensation, acknowledging that those who served in specific locations were likely exposed and that their illnesses are tied to their military service. The designation expedites affected veterans’ claims.

  438.
But when Osborn requested his benefits, he was denied. The letter said the cancer was “more likely due to your age,” not military service.

  439.
“This didn’t happen because of my age. This is happening because we were stationed in the places that were being sprayed and contaminated,” he said.

  440.
Studies show that diseases caused by environmental factors can take years to emerge. And to make things more perplexing for veterans stationed at Fort Ord, contamination from other harmful chemicals, like the industrial cleaner trichloroethylene, have been well documented on the former base, landing it on the EPA’s Superfund site list in 1990.

  441.
“We typically expect to see the effect years down the line,” said Lawrence Liu, a doctor at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center who has studied Agent Orange. “Carcinogens have additive effects.”

  442.
In February, the VA proposed a rule that for the first time would allow compensation to veterans for Agent Orange exposure at 17 U.S. bases in a dozen states where the herbicide was tested, used, or stored.

  443.
Fort Ord is not on that list either, because the VA’s list is based on the Defense Department’s 2019 update.

  444.
“It’s a very tricky question,” Smoger said, emphasizing how widely the herbicides were used both at military bases and by civilians for similar purposes. “On one hand, we were service. We were exposed. On the other hand, why are you different from the people across the road that are privately using it?”

  445.
The VA says that it based its proposed rule on information provided by the Defense Department.

  446.
“DoD’s review found no documentation of herbicide use, testing or storage at Fort Ord. Therefore, VA does not have sufficient evidence to extend a presumption of exposure to herbicides based on service at Fort Ord at this time,” VA press secretary Terrence Hayes said in an email.

  447.
The Documentation

  448.
Yet environmental activist Elder, with help from toxic and remediation specialist Denise Trabbic-Pointer and former VA physician Kyle Horton, compiled seven documents showing otherwise. They include a journal article, the agronomist report, and cleanup-related documents as recent as 1995 — all pointing to widespread herbicide use and experimentation as well as lasting contamination at the base.

  449.

  452.

  453.

  454.
Though the documents do not call the herbicide by its colorful nickname, they routinely cite the combination of 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T. A “hazardous waste minimization assessment” dated 1991 reported 80,000 pounds of herbicides used annually at Fort Ord. It separately lists 2,4,5-T as a product for which “substitutions are necessary to minimize the environmental impacts.”

  455.
The poison oak “control program” started in 1951, according to a report by Army agronomist Floyd Otter, four years before the U.S. deepened its involvement in Vietnam. Otter detailed the use of these chemicals alone and in combination with diesel oil or other compounds, at rates generally between “one to two gallons of liquid herbicide” per acre.

  456.
“In conclusion, we are fairly well satisfied with the methods,” Otter wrote, noting he was interested in “any way in which costs can be lowered or quicker kill obtained.”

  457.
An article published in California Agriculture more than a decade later includes before and after photos showing the effectiveness of chemical brush control used in a live-oak woodland at Fort Ord, again citing both chemicals in Agent Orange. The Defense Department did not respond to questions sent April 10 about the contamination or say when the Army stopped using 2,4,5-T at Fort Ord.

  458.
“What’s most compelling about Fort Ord is it was actually used for the same purpose it was used for in Vietnam — to kill plants — not just storing it,” said Julie Akey, a former Army linguist who worked at the base in the 1990s and later developed the rare blood cancer multiple myeloma.

  459.
Akey, who also worked with Elder, runs a Facebook group and keeps a list of people stationed on the base who later were diagnosed with cancer and other illnesses. So far, she has tallied more than 1,400 former Fort Ord residents who became sick.

  460.
Elder’s findings have galvanized the group to speak up during a public comment period for the VA’s proposed rule. Of 546 comments, 67 are from veterans and others urging the inclusion of Fort Ord. Hundreds of others have written in regarding the use of Agent Orange and other chemicals at their bases.

Olson calls the evidence convincing.

  464.
“It clearly supports the fact that 2,4,5-T with unknown amounts of dioxin TCDD was applied on the Fort Ord grounds and border fences,” Olson said. “Some military and civilian personnel would have been exposed.”

  467.
The Pentagon did not respond to questions regarding the upkeep of the list or the process for adding locations.

  468.
In the meantime, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry is studying potential chemical exposure among people who worked and lived on Fort Ord between 1985 and 1994. However, the agency is evaluating drinking water for contaminants such as trichloroethylene and not contamination or pollution from other chemicals such as Agent Orange or those found in firefighting foams.

  469.
Other veterans are frustrated by the VA’s long process to recognize their illnesses and believe they were sickened by exposure at Fort Ord.

  470.
“Until Fort Ord is recognized by the VA as a presumptive site, it’s probably going to be a long, difficult struggle to get some kind of compensation,” said Mike Duris, a 72-year-old veteran diagnosed with prostate cancer four years ago who ultimately underwent surgery.

  471.
Like so many others, he wonders about the connection to his training at Fort Ord in the early ’70s — drinking the contaminated water and marching, crawling, and digging holes in the dirt.

  472.
“Often, where there is smoke, there’s fire,” Duris said.

  509.
Jonathan P. Baird lives in Wilmot.

  510.
Polls are ubiquitous in America and I admit to being highly skeptical about their accuracy. I think Trump's defeat by Hillary Clinton and the failure of the Red Wave in 2022 are examples that justify this skepticism.

  511.
One poll result that caught my attention is the view that Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump is better for the economy than President Biden. A Reuters/Ipsos poll in April showed Trump with a 41% to 34% lead on who has a better handle on the economy. Previous NBC polls favored Republicans' handling of the economy by larger margins.

  512.
The result is puzzling. During Trump's presidency, his greatest achievement was a tax cut that favored big corporations and the super-rich. It overwhelmingly benefited the 1%, but the tax cut fit a longstanding narrative that Republicans are the party of low taxes and low spending. In contrast, the Democrats are seen as taxpayers and donors. They are considered weak and give alms.

  513.
I would suspect that this narrative fails to capture our current reality. On a wide range of economic issues, Democratic policies are far more favorable to working people than Republicans. The proof is right before our eyes.

  514.
We are experiencing a modern resurgence of the labor movement. There was a hot working summer in 2023. Writer Anat Shenker-Osorio says there were 380 industrial disputes in 2023. Joe Biden joined a picket line alongside members of the United Auto Worker (UAW), the first time a president has done so. Biden has also taken pro-union measures. The UAW won a major contract victory with double-digit increases as well as cost-of-living increases from the Big Three automakers.

  515.
Republicans generally side with corporate bosses and Wall Street greed. They are consistently against the labor movement. The UAW is currently trying to organize 150,000 workers in 36 non-union factories in the South. These include factories owned by Toyota, Hyundai, Honda, Nissan, Volvo and Tesla. In a letter dated April 16, Southern Republican governors in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas announced their opposition to the UAW campaign.

  516.
Despite their opposition, workers at a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, voted overwhelmingly to join the UAW on April 19. This is the first auto plant in the South to organize through elections since the 1940s. Next up is a Mercedes plant in Alabama. They are holding an election on May 13 to see whether workers will choose to join the UAW.

  517.
Before this year, anti-union sentiment was firmly entrenched in the South. So the Chattanooga victory is historic and could well set off a chain reaction of union victories. The UAW's stunning 2023 victory over the Big Three accelerated its traction and won over many workers who had previously been reluctant to join.

  518.
The Biden administration and Democrats also deserve credit for passing the Inflation Reduction Act. The benefits of this law for employees are only just beginning to be felt. The BlueOval City electric vehicle battery plant in Tennessee is leading the way in creating clean energy jobs with high pay and comprehensive benefits packages. The plant is in Hayward County, a poor part of Tennessee.

  519.
The Inflation Reduction Act helped spur more than $92 billion in investment in the electric vehicle (EV) production, battery and critical minerals industries. An estimated 84,000 jobs have been created so far. This is a big boost for both the transition to electric vehicles and American manufacturing. Next year, Ford will begin producing electric trucks in BlueOval City. This was only possible because of the Inflation Reduction Act. It's not clear whether workers value Democrats' role in making this effort a reality.

  520.
Although unions are becoming increasingly popular among Americans, only 10% of the workforce is unionized. Much of the decline in union membership has to do with Republican hostility toward labor. Trump's appointments to federal agencies often seemed like a fox in a henhouse. They opposed the pro-worker mission of the agency, be it the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) or the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA).

  521.
The Trump-appointed members of the NLRB have completely neglected their duties. They did nothing to stop the harassment of union organizers, the interference in union elections, the theft of wages targeting workers, and the misclassification of workers as independent contractors. Similarly, Trump's labor secretary, a corporate lawyer, sought to dismantle regulations, particularly at OSHA. Republicans left over 40% of OSHA leadership positions vacant during Trump's term.

  522.
Another area deserves mention. I had noted Trump's tax cuts in 2017, which saved large corporations and the super-rich tens of millions of dollars. It was his gift to the 1%. Biden has pushed through a minimum tax of 15% for companies. It was the first corporate tax increase in more than 30 years, and he used that money to finance his climate package.

  523.
In 2025, Trump's tax cuts expire and he is asking the billionaires to re-elect me and I will cut your taxes again. Companies like Amazon reported $11 billion in profits and paid no taxes. Biden says the opposite of Trump. He will raise taxes on billionaires and large corporations. Biden has funded the IRS to go after wealthy tax cheats. Trump intentionally defunded the IRS so that less wealthy people could be audited.

  524.
When FDR ran for president in 1936, he defied the robber barons of his time. He said: “Never before in our history have these forces been so united against one candidate as they are today. “They are united in their hatred of me, and I welcome their hatred.”

  525.
The messages from today's Democrats are far more tepid. The way forward is to follow FDR's example. Standing with working people will lead to much better election results. Republicans have shown that they only care about maximizing profits for people who don't need more money.
The post Concord Monitor Opinion: No, Republicans are not better at the economy first appeared on TRADING U.
