46.
Yale University started out as The Collegiate School in 1701. Its original purpose was to train ministers. In 1718 Elihu Yale donated nine bales of goods for the college to sell, from which they netted £560. He effectively earned the naming rights to the college, and Yale College it was.

 47.
The college became a University in 1823, when the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences opened. Since then, the university has grown to 14 colleges, most recently adding The Jackson School of Global Affairs in 2022.

 86.

Way back in 2015, I think before I was an MMMM participant, I built a list of ten foreign-language hits. Yesterday, Randy commented “Love these foreign language songs that make the charts!” which reminded me of the original post. I went back and saw that there were a few songs that had vanished (as things on YouTube are wont to do), so I rebuilt the playlist, and here it is, with commentary. I’m giving you the full playlist instead of separating all the songs like I’ve been doing. I’ve tested the playlist for the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia (my VPN is lacking in other areas), so it should work. The playlist is here.

 98.
Dominique – The Singing Nun (French): Jeanine Deckers, also Sister Luc-Gabrielle, OP, “Soeur Sourire” (“Sister Smile”), or The Singing Nun, was a Belgian Dominican nun who was encouraged by her superior to record an album of her songs, of which “Dominique” was one. It reached #1 on the Hot 100 in 1963-64. I had the album at one time. It was popular among Catholic schoolkids everywhere.

 99.
Ue O Muite Aroukou (“Sukiyaki”) – Ryu Sakamoto (Japanese): I featured this almost exactly one year ago in my Battle of the Bands for November 1. This is a beautiful song whose lyrics tell the story of a young man walking and trying not to cry over a lost love. It was named “Sukiyaki” by record executives because they felt American recordbuyers wouldn’t be able to pronounce the Japanese name. The song reached #1 on the Hot 100 and the Adult Contemporary charts in 1963.

 100.
Guantanamera – The Sandpipers (Spanish): The music for this was written by Joséito Fernández, and the words of a José Martí poem were added to make the official version. It is Cuba’s best-known patriotic song. The Sandpipers’ arrangement was written by Pete Seeger. It reached #9 on the Hot 100 and #3 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1966.

 101.
La Bamba – Ritchie Valens (Spanish): This is a folk song from the Mexican state of Veracruz. Valens’ version reached #22 on the Hot 100 in 1958. The cover by Los Lobos, part of the soundtrack for the Valens biopic La Bamba, reached #1 on the Hot 100 in 1987.

 102.
99 Luftballons – Nena (German): This German anti-war song was from Nena’s first album in 1983. When the German version proved popular, it was re-recorded in English with lyrics by Kevin McAlea. The German version reached #2 on the Hot 100.

 103.
Nel Blu Dipinto Di Blu (Volare) – Domenico Modugno (Italian): Written by Modugno and Franco Migliacci, this spent five non-consecutive weeks atop the Hot 100 in August and September 1958 and was Billboard’s #1 single for the year. It’s been covered by a lot of singers, including Dean Martin, Al Martino, and Jerry Vale; my favorite cover is by the Gipsy Kings.

 104.
Pata Pata – Miriam Makeba (Xhosa): This is the South African singer’s signature song. It was released in the US in 1967 and reached #12 on the Hot 100.

 105.
Seemann, Deine Heimat ist das Meer (Sailor, Your Home Is The Sea) – Lolita (German): The US version featured a verse read in English by the singer. This reached #5 on the Hot 100 in 1959, the most successful German-language song until “99 Luftballons.”

 106.
Eres Tú – Mocedades (Spanish): This was popular in 1974, the year I graduated high school and started college. Mocedades is a Spanish band and the vocal is done by Amaya Uranga. It reached #9 on the Hot 100 and is still heard on “lite rawk” stations.

 107.
Gangnam Style – PSY (Korean): The video for this one has been watched 2,435,937,379 times on YouTube (the last time I looked), and you have to admit, it’s catchy. It debuted on the Hot 100 at #64 the week of September 22, 2012. It rose to #11 the following week, and to #2 the week after that, where it peaked.

 329.
“Eres Tú” (“That’s You”) is a song written by Juan Carlos Calderón and sung by the Spanish vocal group Mocedades. It represented Spain in the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest, where it placed second, and became an international hit that year: #1 in Spain, #3 in sthe Netherlands and New Zealand, #6 in Canada, #8 in Belgium (Flanders), Norway, and the US Adult Contemporary chart, #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and the Cash Box Top 100 singles, #15 in Germany, #25 in Belgium (Wallonia), and #30 in Australia. Here is their performance, with full horn and string sections, at the 1973 Eurovision Song Contest.

 387.
 388.

A lot of meditation, and self-hypnosis, and healthy living in general, is just a matter of learning to breathe. Inhale through the nose, exhale from the mouth. Breathe in through your nose to a count of five, hold it for a count of six, breathe out through the mouth to a count of seven. Breathe from your diaphragm. In-2-3-4-5, hold-2-3-4-5-6, out-2-3-4-5-6-7. Focus on your breathing. Soon, you lose track of everything else. It’s there, the anxiety, the tension, the adrenaline, the Outside World, but you aren’t concerned with those things. All you want to do is feel yourself breathe.

 389.
It can be religious, if you’re so inclined. Breathe in and out slowly and experience the power of God. Sometimes we just need to sit and listen to God. Sometimes we need to leave our problems in God’s hands. It all starts with breathing, calming yourself.

 390.
I ended up back in the ICU because I had these terrible spasms in my stomach that were keeping me awake. My nurse walked me through, “in through your nose, out through your mouth.” It taught me to relax…

Crash, Costner’s character, has spent his entire career in the minors (he holds the minor-league record for home runs). He’ll never make it to the majors, never get his chance to stand on the field of a major-league stadium. He knows everything he needs to about being in The Show, knowledge he’ll never need. When the kid makes it to the majors, Crash is rewarded with his release.

 492.
We’re a little out of season for wassail, traditionally a Christmas drink. It’s a combination of apple cider, orange and lemon (or pineapple) juice, apples, cinnamon, brown sugar, cloves, nutmeg, maybe star anise, maybe cranberries, maybe other stuff. Mary made it around Christmastime when we lived in Chicago. She’d put it together and cook it continuously on the stove over low heat, and it smelled and tasted great.

 493.
One year, we noticed that Kittyface, our original cat, was getting the runs, and we couldn’t figure out why. She used to like to sleep on the stove between the burners, and one day Mary noticed that she was drinking the wassail out of the pot.

 494.
Wikipedia, naturally, has a whole writeup on wassail and wassailing, so read that for a little more background. One thing we should point out is that there is a vessel known as a wassail bowl, which is not the same as a punchbowl. Or is it?
