Residents affiliated with the Suman Cell Society in Vesu allege their bills have doubled compared to the same period last year.

 50.
“The electricity charges have become unbearable,” said a spokesperson for the Suman Cell Society. “Previously, daily charges ranged between Rs 5 to Rs 35. Now, with the smart meters, they’ve skyrocketed to Rs 27 to Rs 76 per day!”

 51.
The discontent stems from a DGVCL initiative launched on April 4th, which saw smart meters installed in Suman Cell Society and a total of 11,951 homes across Vesu. However, the anticipated benefits of the new system have been overshadowed by concerns about inflated electricity costs.

 52.
Jivaraj Dodia, a resident of Suman Cell, shared his experience: “During summers, my bi-monthly electricity bill used to be around Rs 1,400. Since the smart meter installation 35 days ago, I’ve recharged for Rs 1,000 and only have Rs 84 remaining! Even when my house was vacant for three days, the meter still deducted money.”

 53.
Pradeepbhai, president of Vesuni Suman Cell-B, echoed Dodia’s concerns. “Our summer bill for two months was typically Rs 2,000. I recharged the new meter with Rs 4,000, and within 37 days, I’m down to Rs 1,200! Now, I wake up every morning worried about how much electricity I’ve used.”

 54.
The DGVCL has yet to comment on the residents’ grievances or the reasons behind the alleged increase in electricity charges. However, with a significant portion of Piplod residents protesting the inflated bills, the future of the smart meter rollout program remains uncertain.

This warning signifies a significant risk to public health due to extreme heat conditions.

 80.
“The summer heat has intensified in Gujarat, prompting the state weather department to issue an orange alert till May 21,” said a spokesperson for the IMD. “Temperature is expected to range between 43°C and 45°C across the state.”

 81.
Major cities like Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar, Bhuj, Amreli, and Rajkot fall under the orange alert zone. An orange alert is the second-highest heat warning level, indicating potentially dangerous conditions for vulnerable populations.

 82.
The scorching temperatures are already making their presence felt. On May 17th, several cities witnessed temperatures exceeding 41°C. Himmatnagar emerged as the hottest with a sweltering 45°C, followed closely by Ahmedabad at 44.2°C.

 83.
“The situation is concerning,” remarked a health official in Ahmedabad. “Prolonged exposure to such extreme heat can lead to heatstroke, dehydration, and other health complications.”

 84.
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is urging residents to take necessary precautions. “Staying hydrated is crucial,” advised an AMC spokesperson. “Drink plenty of water, buttermilk, coconut water, and other cooling fluids. Consume fresh fruits and vegetables, and avoid spicy or processed foods.”

 85.
Experts also recommend limiting strenuous activity during peak heat hours and wearing loose, cotton clothing. Staying indoors with proper air conditioning or ventilation is advisable.

 86.
With the orange alert in effect for the next few days, Gujarat residents can expect scorching heat and should take preventive measures to stay safe and healthy during this intense summer spell.

 115.
The SGCCI management, it appears, was unaware of the university’s action against IDT and 41 other similar institutes accused of duping students with worthless degrees. IDT’s stall number 34 attracted attention, particularly among young students seeking opportunities at reputed institutions. However, many visitors, aware of the VNSGU’s action, avoided the stall altogether.

 116.
Students Upset, Demand Action

 117.
The incident left students like Khyati Srikant, who visited the expo, fuming. “Why did SGCCI allow institutes like IDT to participate?” she questioned. “Their degrees hold no value! It’s crucial to remove such misleading stalls to prevent students from falling prey to their false advertising.”

 118.
VNSGU Takes Action Against Fake Degree Institutes

 119.
Meanwhile, the VNSGU has formed a five-member committee to investigate these “fake degree institutes” in Surat. The committee will visit all 42 institutes, verifying their affiliations and necessary approvals from the university or the state government.

 120.
A senior VNSGU officer expressed concern, stating, “These institutes offering fake degrees could be part of a larger scam, exploiting innocent students for large sums of money. Parents are often unaware of the legitimacy of such institutes and end up falling victim.”

 121.
SGCCI Blames Lack of Communication

 122.
When questioned about IDT’s presence at the expo, SGCCI president Ramesh Vaghasia explained, “The expo was planned well before VNSGU’s action. IDT might have booked their space earlier. After verifying the details, we have removed the stall of IDT”

 123.
Importance of Verification and Responsibility Highlighted

 124.
Education experts believe this incident highlights the importance of thorough verification for students seeking educational opportunities. It also raises questions about the responsibility of event organizers to ensure the legitimacy of participating institutions. This incident serves as a stark reminder for students and parents to be cautious and verify the accreditation of any institute before enrolling in any program.

This surge, reaching USD 342.27 million, marks a positive trend for the Indian gem and jewellery industry, even as overall exports witnessed a decline.

 149.
While the total gems and jewellery exports dipped 11.37% compared to April 2023, there are promising signs. The gross export of all gold jewellery (plain and studded combined) climbed 11.03%, reaching USD 718.34 million.

 150.
“Plain gold jewellery has shown remarkable growth in exports, especially since the UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA),” commented Vipul Shah, Chairman of the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC). “We are confident that this growth will continue with the benefits expected from the Free Trade Agreements signed with UAE, Australia, and the European Free Trade Association (EFTA).”

 151.
Shah attributes the success of plain gold to the CEPA and anticipates further growth in the coming years. He also expressed optimism about the future of diamond and silver jewellery exports.

 152.
GJEPC’s proactive approach includes a robust promotion plan to tap into new markets and collaborative efforts with the Natural Diamond Council (NDC) and the World Gold Council (WGC) for generic promotion of diamond and gold jewellery.

 153.
Diamonds and Silver See Mixed Performance

 154.
Despite the overall positive outlook for gold, there were some declines in other segments. Studded gold jewellery exports experienced a slight dip of 0.62% compared to April 2023. The gross export of cut and polished diamonds also saw a decrease of 16.76%. Similarly, silver jewellery exports dropped by 32.98%.

 155.
However, there were bright spots outside of gold. The gross export of platinum jewellery skyrocketed by a staggering 281.1%.

 156.
The report also highlights a decrease in the exports of coloured gemstones and polished lab-grown diamonds by 35.39% and 18.2% respectively.

 157.
The Indian gem and jewellery industry presents a mixed picture with plain gold leading the charge. While some segments face challenges, GJEPC’s strategic initiatives and the potential of newly signed trade agreements promise a bright future for the industry as a whole.

 213.
The Bank, with a long-standing history of lending to women, will use IFC’s financing for on-lending as microloans to Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Joint Liability Groups (JLGs) enrolled in the Sustainable Livelihoods Initiative (SLI). SLI is the Bank’s business line responsible for microfinance lending programs exclusively for women borrowers. IFC’s loan will further enable the Bank to grow its microcredit and microlending to women, especially allowing SHG and JLG borrowers to graduate to individual lending schemes.

 214.
“As a Bank we have been committed to empowering women especially by targeted lending to Self -Help Groups (SHGs) and Joint Liability Groups (JLGs), which further helps take banking to the underbanked and unbanked. This longer duration credit facility from IFC will further boost these efforts,” said Arup Rakshit, Group Head, Treasury, HDFC Bank.

 215.
Non-banking financial companies, including microfinance institutions (MFIs) and small finance banks, are the major lenders to women seeking loan for income generation purposes, accounting for nearly 65.7 percent of the total microfinance lending in India, and collectively reaching approximately 47 million clients with an aggregate gross loan portfolio of US$31.6 billion as of December 31, 2023[1].

 216.
However, MFIs are highly fragmented, have limited capacity, and face higher funding costs. In this context, the extensive distribution network of banks and lower funding costs, among others, can be leveraged to increase access to microloans for women, promoting self-employment. While banks account for 40 percent of the total microlending in the country, microloans constitute a small proportion of their total lending portfolios.

 217.
“Access to financial services is key to empowering women and strengthening the economy. IFC aims to promote greater inclusiveness of underserved women borrowers by showing the viability of scaling up microlending to this segment,” said Imad Fakhoury, IFC’s Regional Director for South Asia. IFC’s investment in HDFC Bank will encourage the wider industry of lenders and investors, with an aim to spur microfinance lending in India.”

 218.
IFC plays a major role in creating efficient microfinance markets and is the largest international funder in the sector. Over 20 years, IFC has delivered significant global impact with more than 650 microfinance investments totaling $6.2 billion and 330 micro and digital finance advisory projects in 95 countries.

This comes amidst recent action taken by Veer Narmad South Gujarat University (VNSGU) against IDT, accusing them of offering fake degree courses in interior design and fashion design.

 245.
The SGCCI management, it seems, was unaware of the university’s action against IDT and 41 other similar institutes accused of duping students with unaccredited degrees. IDT’s stall number 34 caused quite a stir, particularly among young students seeking opportunities at reputed colleges and universities. However, many visitors, aware of the VNSGU’s action, bypassed the stall altogether.

 246.
“I don’t understand why SGCCI allowed institutes like IDT to participate,” said Khyati Srikant, a student at the expo. “Their degrees hold no value. It’s crucial to remove such stalls to prevent students from falling prey to their false advertising.”

 247.
The VNSGU, meanwhile, has formed a five-member committee to investigate these “fake degree institutes” in Surat. The committee will visit all 42 institutes, verifying their affiliations and necessary approvals from the university or the state government.

 248.
“These institutes offering fake degrees could be part of a larger scam, exploiting innocent students for large sums of money,” stated a senior VNSGU officer. “Parents are often unaware of the legitimacy of such institutes and end up falling victim.”

 249.
When questioned about IDT’s presence at the expo, SGCCI president Ramesh Vaghasia explained, “The expo was planned well before VNSGU’s action. IDT might have booked their space earlier. We are now verifying the details of all participating institutes, including IDT, after being alerted by the media.”

 250.
“This incident highlights the importance of thorough verification for students seeking educational opportunities. It also raises questions about the responsibility of event organizers to ensure the legitimacy of participating institutions” said an education expert.

The latest development is the addition of five new parking stands at Terminal 2, increasing flight operations and aircraft parking capacity.

 273.
This expansion caters to the growing demand for air travel in Ahmedabad. The airport now boasts 18 parking stands, up from 13, accommodating commonly used aircraft by domestic and some international airlines.

 274.
The new stands provide opportunities for airlines to add more connections to Ahmedabad. Additionally, Terminal 2 is undergoing rapid expansion with four new aerobridges, bringing the total to eight. The airport has also implemented the Multiple Aircraft Ramp System (MARS) on four existing aerobridges, optimizing stand usage.

 275.
With these advancements, Terminal 2 can now handle:

 276.

 277.
18 Boeing 737/Airbus A320 aircraft, commonly used by domestic and some international carriers.

 278.
5 widebody aircraft like Boeing 777/787 or Airbus A359, and Cargo colossal AN 124, B744, Beluga aircraft mainly operated by international airlines.

 279.

 280.
Terminal 2 is also geared up for handling Saudi Airlines B747-400 aircraft 450-seater aircraft towards Hajj Operations.

 281.
The increased capacity not only enhances passenger traffic but also improves operational efficiency for accommodating larger aircraft in the future. This opens doors for international carriers to consider Ahmedabad for frequent technical halts alongside regular passenger flights.

 282.
Furthermore, Ahmedabad has welcomed a new twice-weekly direct cargo flight operated by Ethiopian Airlines, connecting the city to Addis Ababa.

 283.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport remains committed to ongoing development and upgrades, aiming to become a leading aviation hub for western India.

This proactive measure aims to prevent similar disasters, especially during natural calamities.

 310.
The Ghatkopar incident, which occurred on May 13, involved the collapse of a massive 120×120-foot billboard set up by Ego Media Pvt Ltd. Despite having permission for a smaller 40×40-foot structure, the company erected a significantly larger hoarding that fell during unseasonal rain and gusty winds, tragically trapping nearly 100 people at a busy petrol pump. Bhavesh Bhinde, the director of Ego Media Pvt Ltd, was arrested in Udaipur following the incident.

 311.
Prompted by this disaster, SMC has moved decisively. Over the past two days, the corporation has issued 600 notices to advertising agencies, demanding the removal of hoardings deemed dangerous. These notices are part of a broader strategy to safeguard lives and properties across the city from the potential hazards posed by unstable billboards, particularly during unpredictable weather events similar to those on May 13.

 312.
A significant number of these hoardings are owned by Shah Publicity, a well-known advertising agency in Surat. Inspections have revealed that many of their structures pose severe risks and could result in substantial damage during natural disasters. Despite the urgency of the situation, the SMC’s efforts are somewhat hampered by a lack of coordination between its Estate department and its Centralised Policy. Consequently, the responsibility for dismantling these dangerous billboards has been delegated to the respective municipal zones within the city.

 313.
The SMC’s crackdown on hazardous hoardings is a necessary step to ensure public safety. The lack of stringent enforcement and oversight in the past has led to numerous billboards being erected without adhering to safety standards, increasing the risk of accidents during adverse weather conditions. The tragic events in Ghatkopar serve as a stark reminder of the potential consequences of negligence and non-compliance with regulations.

 314.
“By targeting the removal of dangerous hoardings, SMC aims to avert any Ghatkopar-like incidents in Surat. The swift issuance of notices and the inspection of hoardings across the city underline the seriousness with which the corporation is treating this issue” said a senior SMC officer.

 315.
“However, for these efforts to be truly effective, there must be sustained coordination and enforcement across all relevant departments of the SMC. Only through a unified and systematic approach can the city ensure that all advertising structures meet the necessary safety standards and that potential risks are mitigated effectively” said Aslam Cyclewala, former councillor of SMC.

The incident prompted immediate action from airport authorities and law enforcement, leading to a thorough search of the aircraft, according to police reports.

 342.
The discovery was made around 7 PM as the crew prepared for takeoff. Upon finding the suspicious note, the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) and Delhi Police were promptly notified. Passengers were asked to deplane as a precautionary measure, and a comprehensive security sweep of the aircraft was conducted. The passengers bound to Vadodara arrived on Thursday afternoon.

 343.
“A crew member noticed the tissue paper at 7 PM while the aircraft was ready for takeoff. Both the Central Industrial Security Force and the Delhi Police were informed of the situation, and passengers were asked to deplane,” explained a police officer involved in the investigation.

 344.
The police and security teams conducted a detailed inspection of the aircraft, which included a search for any potential explosives or other hazardous items. After an exhaustive search, authorities found no suspicious items on board. The aircraft was subsequently cleared for takeoff, but passengers were accommodated on another flight to ensure their safety and convenience.

 345.
“After the tissue was discovered on Wednesday evening, authorities conducted a search of the flight. However, no suspicious items were found, and the aircraft was cleared for takeoff,” clarified a police officer.

 346.
The incident caused a significant delay and created a sense of unease among passengers. However, the swift and efficient response by the security forces helped to manage the situation without causing panic. The passengers, though inconvenienced by the delay, were later accommodated on another flight, ensuring their journey continued safely.

 347.
“Passengers were understandably concerned, but we were able to manage the situation effectively with the cooperation of the security forces and the passengers themselves,” said an Air India spokesperson. “Safety is our utmost priority, and we took all necessary measures to ensure that.”

 348.
This incident at IGI Airport highlights the critical importance of vigilance and prompt action in maintaining aviation security.

 349.
The authorities have launched an investigation to identify the person responsible for placing the tissue paper in the washroom. They are reviewing CCTV footage and other evidence to gather more information about the incident.
