  53.    <p><span style="font-size: 16px;">Join us for a talk on the end of the Auld Alliance. In 1559 and 1560, Mary Queen of Scots was not only the reigning queen of Scotland,
  54.    but also the queen consort of France. Indeed, her marriage to the French king Francis II can be seen as the final
  55.    hurrah of the Auld Alliance  between Scotland and France that had flourished so much for the proceeding 150 years.
  56.    This talk will examine how Queen Mary operated as a European sovereign who attempted to navigate the changing religious,
  57.    commercial, and diplomatic currents of her day. </span></p>

  66. <p><strong><em>About the Speaker:&nbsp;&nbsp;</em></strong><strong>Nicholas Birns</strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;teaches courses in literature and humanities at New York University. He is the author of many academic books and articles, most recently, the&nbsp;<em>Companion to the Australian Novel</em>    from Cambridge University Press. He has written on the Middle Ages in his 2013 book Barbarian Memory as well as in several articles. Although he is of partially Scottish descent, his genealogist cousin regretfully told him that he has absolutely no
