  55. <p>The gut microbiota is the microbial community that occupies the gastrointestinal tract. It is responsible for producing enzymes, metabolites, and other molecules crucial for host metabolism and in response to the environment.</p>
  56. <p>Consequently, a balanced gut microbiota is important for mammalian health in many ways, such as helping to regulate the immune and endocrine systems. This in turn, impacts the physiology of tissues throughout the body. However, little was known about the impact of the gut microbiota on host reproduction, and whether an altered microbiota in a father could influence the fitness of his offspring.</p>
  57. <p>The Hackett group at EMBL Rome, in collaboration with the Bork and the Zimmermann groups at EMBL Heidelberg, set out to answer this question, with their results now published in the journal <em>Nature</em>. The scientists showed that disrupting the gut microbiota in male mice increases the probability that their offspring are born with low weight, and are more likely to die prematurely. These findings are illustrated in this animation.</p>
  58. <h2>What is passed on to the next generation</h2>
  59. <p>To study the effects of the gut microbiota on male reproduction and their offspring, the researchers altered the composition of gut microbes in male mice by treating them with common antibiotics that do not enter the bloodstream. This induces a condition called dysbiosis, whereby the microbial ecosystem in the gut becomes unbalanced. </p>
  60. <p>The scientists then analysed changes in the composition of important testicular metabolites. They found that in male mice dysbiosis affects the physiology of the testes, as well as metabolite composition and hormonal signalling. At least part of this effect was mediated by changes in the levels of the key hormone leptin in blood and testes of males with induced dysbiosis. These observations suggest that in mammals, a &#8216;gut-germline axis&#8217; exists as an important connection between the gut, its microbiota, and the germline. </p>
  61. <p>To understand the relevance of this &#8216;gut-germline&#8217; axis to traits inherited by offspring, the scientists mated either untreated or dysbiotic males with untreated females. Mouse pups sired by dysbiotic fathers showed significantly lower birth weights and an increased rate of postnatal mortality. Different combinations of antibiotics as well as treatments with dysbiosis-inducing-laxatives (which also disrupt microbiota) affected offspring similarly.</p>

  63. <p>Importantly, this effect is reversible. Once antibiotics are withdrawn, paternal microbiota recover. When mice with recovered microbiota were mated with untreated females, their offspring were born with normal birthweight and developed normally as well.</p>
  64. <p>&#8220;We have observed that intergenerational effects disappear once a normal microbiota is restored. That means that any alteration to the gut microbiota able to cause intergenerational effects could be prevented in prospective fathers&#8221; said Peer Bork, EMBL Heidelberg Director, who participated in the study. &#8220;The next step will be to understand in detail how different environmental factors such as medicinal drugs including antibiotics can affect the paternal germline and, therefore, embryonic development.&#8221; Ayele Denboba, first author of the publication and former postdoc in the Hackett Group, now Group Leader at the Max Planck Institute of Immunology and Epigenetics in Freiburg, Germany added &#8220;The study originated to understand environmental impacts on fathers by considering the gut microbiota as a nexus of host-environment interactions, thus creating a sufficient-cause model to assess intergenerational health risks in complex ecological systems.&#8221;</p>
  65. <h2>Paternal impact on pregnancy disease risk</h2>
  66. <p>In their work, Hackett and his colleagues also discovered that placental defects, including poor vascularisation and reduced growth, occurred more frequently in pregnancies involving dysbiotic males. The defective placentas exhibited hallmarks of a common pregnancy complication in humans called pre-eclampsia, which leads to impaired offspring growth and is a risk factor for developing a wide range of common diseases later in life.</p>

Es gibt kein Haus in der Hauptstadt, das nicht zu kämpfen hätte, weil ein goldenes Jahrzehnt der Gourmandise im Alt-Berliner Gaumen so tiefe Spuren hinterlassen hat wie ein Fußabdruck im märkischen Sand.</p>

Vor neun Jahren eröffnete er mit seinem Chefkoch Micha Schäfer das „Nobelhart &amp; Schmutzig“, sorgte mit seinem radikalen Regionalismus für Furore, wurde schnell zu einer international bekannten Adresse und musste sich weder um sein Auskommen noch um sein Ansehen Sorgen machen. Doch mit der Krise sind die Umsätze um ein Fünftel eingebrochen, selbst Großereignisse wie die Internationale Tourismus-Börse machen sich bei den Reservierungen kaum noch bemerkbar, und da Besserung nicht in Sicht ist, schritt Billy Wagner zur Tat.</p>

Jeder Koch kocht jetzt jeden Posten, alle teilen sich die Schichten der abgeschafften Spüler, keiner arbeitet mehr als 40 Stunden, ein strenger Verhaltenskodex sorgt für das respektvolle Miteinander. Und die Belegschaft bildet nun gemeinsam mit den Gästen und den Produzenten ein Triumvirat der Ebenbürtigkeit, bei dem niemand übervorteilt oder ausgenutzt wird. „Wertezentrierte Gastronomie“ nennt Wagner dieses neue Konzept, mit dem er nicht nur den chronischen Personalmangel in der Gastronomie überwinden, sondern auch ein neues Bewusstsein bei den Gästen für den Wert des guten Essens von seiner Produktion bis zu seiner Zubereitung schaffen will.</p>

Gekocht wird immer noch „brutal lokal“, gegessen bei Schummerbeleuchtung an einem riesigen Tresen, der von drei Seiten die offene Küche umschließt, gespielt Chill-out-Musik von echten Schallplatten, bei denen sich die Nadel manchmal minutenlang an einer Rille verhakt. Und die Stimmung unter den Mitarbeitern ist immer noch unverändert verschworen enthusiastisch, nur dass sie jetzt nicht mehr dem üblichen Protokoll der Spitzenküche vom Amuse-Gueule bis zum Petit Four folgen, sondern zum Auftakt des Abends eine Brotzeit servieren: Eine junge Frau schleppt zwei Steinguttöpfe mit Doppelrahmbutter an unseren Platz. Die eine ist zwei Monate lang gereift, die andere seit dem 28. Oktober 2021 in ihrem Topf und schmeckt inzwischen so schmeichelnd wie ein milder Weichkäse. Zum Naschen gibt es dazu Roggensauerteigbrot, eine geräucherte Schlagwurst, Chicorée mit Rosen-Verjus, Feta mit Fenchelsaat und Spitzkohl-Julienne mit Kümmel – ausnahmslos ausgezeichnete Produkte, die man indes in annähernd ähnlicher Qualität auch in einem guten bayerischen Wirtshaus bekommen könnte.</p>

Das ist maximaler Purismus hart an der Grenze zur kulinarischen Askese, entspricht gleichwohl exakt Billy Wagners avantgardistischer Vorstellung von Raffinesse, die sich allein auf die schnörkellose, unverfälschte Präsentation des besten Grundprodukts konzentriert.</p>

  133. <p class="body-elements__paragraph" data-v-713fd6ef="" data-v-755f0215="">Bei der Hühnerbrust des bekannten Züchters Lars Odefey, der seinen Tieren mehr als 100 Tage Zeit zum Wachsen gibt, wird der Minimalismus auf die Spitze getrieben: Dieser Extra-Gang besteht tatsächlich aus nichts anderem als zwei Streifen von der Brust, die mit einem wunderbar dichten Hühner-Jus glasiert und gerösteter Koriandersaat gesprenkelt sind. Bei der Hüfte und Haxe vom Lamm geht es dank Lauch, Bärlauch und einem eminent intensiven, mit Zwiebeln gebundenen Lamm-Jus ein wenig bunter zu, wenngleich auch dieser Teller weit von einem Aromen-Wimmelbild entfernt ist. Doch er gibt Menschen, denen die Spitzengastronomie nicht das tägliche Brot ist, eine fabelhafte Vorstellung davon, wie gut Lamm schmecken kann, wenn es nicht als Tiefkühlkost aus Neuseeland herbeigeschafft wird.</p>

  135. <p class="body-elements__paragraph" data-v-713fd6ef="" data-v-755f0215="">Handfest, authentisch und kein bisschen intellektuell nennt Billy Wagner seine neue Küche, die niemandem Komplikationen bereiten soll, weil die Welt schon kompliziert genug ist. Und die Zahl der Menschen, die Spaß an Vier-Stunden-Abenden im Restaurant haben, nimmt seiner Meinung nach ohnehin dramatisch ab. So werden wir nach zwei Stunden mit einem Hafer-Biskuit verabschiedet, das dank Kompott und Sorbet aus eingelegten Heidelbeeren das Aroma des vergangenen Sommers herrlich konserviert hat, atmen draußen die currywurstgeschwängerte Berliner Luft und hoffen inständig, dass das „Nobelhart &amp; Schmutzig“ seinen guten Weg in die Zukunft, nicht aber den Königsweg für die Spitzengastronomie gefunden hat.</p>

  275. <p>A simple blood test could allow doctors to determine whether a person may be at higher risk for stroke or cognitive decline during their lifetime, according to a new UCLA Health study. </p>
  276. <p>The study, published in the journal <em>Stroke</em>, found that measuring concentrations of a network of inflammatory molecules in the blood could allow doctors to calculate a risk score for susceptibility for cerebral small vessel disease – a common cause of stroke and a contributor to cognitive decline found especially among the elderly. </p>
  277. <p>Currently, the only way to determine a person&#8217;s risk for cerebral vascular diseases has been to use a combination of imaging such as an MRI scan, family history, demographic variables and other risk factor evaluations, said study lead author Dr. Jason Hinman of the UCLA Comprehensive Stroke and Center and the Mary S. Easton Center for Alzheimer&#8217;s Research and Care at UCLA. In clinical practice, neurologists may only find a patient is at risk after they have had a stroke or a cerebral event that warns of one, Hinman said. </p>
  278. <p>The new study found that by measuring the concentrations of this network of inflammatory molecules in the blood of patients who have not had a cerebrovascular event, medical providers may be able to quantitatively assess a person&#8217;s risk for cerebral small vessel disease and future stroke. </p>

  286. <p>The study focused on a biologically-connected network of inflammatory molecules known as the interleukin-18, or IL-18, network, which includes proteins and signaling molecules used to fight various infections. </p>

  288. <p>Past studies have linked individual molecules in the IL-18 network to cerebral small vessel disease and stroke risk. However, the concentration of these individual molecules can fluctuate in response to other ailments such as the flu or autoimmune disorders, making them unreliable predictors of stroke risk at an individual level, Hinman said. </p>
  289. <p>In 2020, University of California researchers including Hinman found that six molecules in the IL-18 network were associated with the presence of vascular brain injuries during MRI scans. </p>
  290. <p>Building off these findings, Hinman sought to determine in this latest publication whether IL-18 network could be used to assess a person&#8217;s susceptibility to stroke risk or cognitive decline. </p>
  291. <p>To test this, the researchers used health data from a generations-long study known as the Framingham Heart Study. This study has tracked the medical history of thousands of residents in the city of Framingham, Massachusetts, throughout their lives since launching in 1948. Blood samples taken from participants had been tested for five of the six molecules later identified as being in the IL-18 network. </p>
  292. <p>By using the blood samples and medical histories of the Framingham participants, Hinman and his coauthor were able to create a mathematical model that generates a risk score based on the concentrations of the IL-18 network molecules. Of the more than 2,200 Framingham residents included in Hinman&#8217;s study, those whose risk scores were in the top 25% had an 84% chance of having a stroke during their lifetime. Dass daraus ein Markenzeichen werden könnte, erkannte der Produzent Lee Hazelwood schnell, und so ging man in Serie. Zur Hall-Verstärkung steckte Hazelwood Eddy mit seiner Gitarre in einen großen Wassertank: legendär auch für die Geschichte der Studioproduktion, lange vor den Konzeptalben der Beatles oder der Beach Boys.</p>

Trotz seines James-Dean-Looks und seiner Posen wirkte der Gitarrist eher brav, und wie viele andere kam er auch mal aus der Mode, fand aber auch immer wieder in diese zurück, weil Nachfolger wie Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen, Mark Knopfler oder jüngst Dan Auerbach an ihn erinnerten oder ihn gar einspannten. Am 30. April ist Duane Eddy im Alter von 86 Jahren in Tennessee gestorben.</p>
