48.
by Terry Heick

 49.
Reflection is a natural part of learning.

 50.
We all think about new experiences–the camping on the car ride home, the mistakes made in a game, or the emotions felt while finishing a long-term project that’s taken months to complete.

 51.
Below I’ve shared 15 strategies for students to reflect on their learning. Modeling the use of each up front can go a long way towards making sure you get the quality of work you’d like to see throughout the year–and students learn more in the process.

 52.
15 Reflection Strategies To Help Students Retain What You Just Taught Them

 53.
1. Pair-Share

 54.
Pair-share is a classic learning strategy where students are paired, and then verbally ‘share’ something that will help them learn new content, deepen understanding, or review what they already know. It can also be used as a quick and dirty assessment tool, as the conversations generally reflect a level of understanding the teacher can use gauge mastery and plan further instruction.

 55.
2. Sentence Stem-based responses

 56.
Sentence stems are great because they’re like training wheels–or to mix a metaphor, tools to coach students into thinking and speaking in certain patterns. For example, you can implore students to ‘think critically,’ but if they don’t have even the basic phrasing of critical thinking (e.g., ‘This is important because…’), critical thinking will be beyond their reach.

 57.
You can also see our sentence stems for critical thinking here for other examples (you don’t have to buy the materials to see the samples).

 58.
3. Layered Text

 59.
Layered text is something I’ve meant to write about for years and never have. A layered text is a digital document that is filled with hyperlinks that communicate, well, just about anything: Questions students have, opportunities for further inquiry, odd references and allusions that reflect the schema students use to make meaning, and so on. (Rap Genius does a version of this.)

 60.
By adding ‘layers’ of meaning to a text through meaningful hyperlinking, students can reflect back on anything, from a pre-assessment journal entry that demonstrated their lack of understanding, to a kind of ‘marking up’ of what they learned when, and from where.

 61.
4. Tweet

 62.
140 characters forces students to reflect quick and to the point–great for brief bursts of reflection or hesitant writers who would struggle to write meaningful journal entries or essays. In fact, you can combine twitter with #6 for twitter exit slips.

 63.
5. 3-2-1

 64.
3-2-1 is a tried-and-true way to frame anything from a pair-share or journal entry (e.g., ask students to write 3 things they think they know, 2 things they know they don’t know, and one thing they’re certain of about a topic) pre-assessment to a post-assessment (e.g., list three ways your essay reflected mastery of skill X, two ways skill Y still needs improving, and one way you can make your argument stronger in the next five minutes) to a reflection of the post-assessment.

 65.
Read more about using the 3-2-1 format for critical thinking.

 66.
6. Exit Slips

 67.
Whether you call them exit slips or exit tickets, asking students to briefly leave behind some residue of learning–a thought, a definition, a question–is a powerful teaching strategy. In fact, ‘exit-slip teaching’ literally drives how I use data in the classroom. Asking students to drop some bit of reflection of the learning process on a chair by the door on the way out is a no-brainer.

 68.
Some examples?

 69.
How did you respond emotionally to something you struggled with today? What did you find most surprising about _____? How did your understanding of _______ change today? What about _____ still confuses you or makes your curious?

 70.
7. Write-Around

 71.
I love write-arounds–easy ways for students to write asynchronously and collaboratively. And the writing fragments students use don’t have to be prose–certain key vocabulary and phrases can help students reflect, but most importantly in a write-around, help students learning from one another as each student is able to read other responses before creating theirs.

 72.
8. Sketch

 73.
Whether by sketch-notes or doodles, allowing students to draw what they think they know, how they believe their learning has changed, or some kind of metaphorical pathway towards deeper understanding is a great learning strategy for students that tend towards creative expression, and a non-threatening way for struggling students to at least write something down on paper you can use to gauge understand and plan your (their) next step.

 74.
9. Podcast

 75.
Through podcasting as a reflecting strategy, students will talk about their learning while recording. If you want to keep it ‘closed-circuit’ (not published), or actually push it to a public audience of some kind depends on the learning and students and privacy issues and so on.

 76.
This can also be simply an audio file recorded and uploaded to a private YouTube channel that’s shared with teachers or parents.

 77.
10. Brainstorming

 78.
Brainstorming can be an effective reflection strategy because it disarms issues with other approaches. For hesitant writers, journaling may not work because the writing process could overwhelm the learning. Podcasting may not work for shy students, Pair-Share may not work well if students are paired effectively, and so on.

 79.
Brainstorming is much simpler. Students could take an allotted time to write down everything they remember about a topic. Or, they could brainstorm questions they still have (things they’re confused or curious about). They could even brainstorm how what what they learned literally connects with what they already know by creating a concept map.

 80.
11. Jigsawing

 81.
Jigsawing is a grouping strategy where a task, concept, or something ‘larger’ is broken down into small puzzles pieces, and students in groups analyze the small puzzle piece, then share out to create the puzzle at large. Using this approach for reflection is seamless: Among other approaches, you can prompt students in groups to gather and share questions they have (you could group by readiness/ability, for example) in groups, and then choose one question that they weren’t able to answer among themselves with the whole class (anonymously–no one has to know who wrote the question).

 82.
12. Prezi

 83.
Think of a cross between a sketch, collage, and presentation, and you have a prezi. Engaging–though distracting and overwhelming if the reflection you need is minor–reflection tool that allows students to create an artifact of learning for their digital portfolios.

 84.
13. Vlog

 85.
This reflection strategy is close to ‘Podcasting’ and even has something in common with pair-sharing. By reflecting through vlog’ing, students simply talk about their learning to a camera.

 86.
This approach would be successful for students that love talking to a camera, but less so for others (who, if they have to talk at all about their learning, may prefer podcasting–or simply recording audio files that are never published.

 87.
14. Collage

 88.
You could do a normal collage of learning reflections, but a multimedia collage is also possible–maybe a sketchnote with a voiceover recorded as a YouTube video to share as a quick presentation with the class (or absent students).

 89.
15. Journaling

 90.
The University of Missouri-St Louis offers 3 kinds of journals that demonstrate the different possibilities of the otherwise vanilla-sounding ‘journaling.’

 91.
1. Personal Journal – Students will write freely about their experience. This is usually done weekly. These personal journals may be submitted periodically to the instructor, or kept as a reference to use at the end of the experience when putting together an academic essay reflecting their experience. (Hatcher 1996)

 92.
2. Dialogue Journal – Students submit loose-leaf pages from a dialogue journal bi-weekly (or otherwise at appropriate intervals) for the instructor to read and comment on. While labor intensive for the instructor, this can provide continual feedback to students and prompt new questions for students to consider during the semester. (Goldsmith, 1995)

 93.
3. Highlighted Journal – Before students submit the reflective journal, they reread personal entries and, using a highlighter, mark sections of the journal that directly relate to concepts discussed in the text or in class. This makes it easier for the instructor to identify the student to reflect on their experience in light of course content. (Gary Hesser, Augsberg College)

 112.

 113.

 114.
The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld, by a 7-2 vote, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s funding structure — in effect, ending an argument that threatened to dismantle the agency.

 115.
At issue was the process wherein the CFPB receives its appropriations through the Federal Reserve, not Congress. A pair of trade groups, the Community Financial Services Association of America and the Consumer Service Alliance of Texas, sued the CFPB in 2018 to void the agency’s rules that bar payday lenders from automatically drawing payments from borrowers’ bank accounts.

 116.
The 5th Circuit Court of Appeals in 2022 dismissed many of the trade groups’ points, but agreed that the CFPB’s funding apparatus violates the U.S. Constitution’s separation-of-powers principles. The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, by contrast, found the CFPB’s funding structure constitutional in a March 2023 ruling, setting up the Supreme Court showdown.

 117.
“The Bureau’s funding does not violate the Appropriations Clause,” Justice Clarence Thomas wrote for the majority Thursday.

 118.
That a Republican justice wrote the opinion defending the CFPB is significant, too. The Supreme Court has heard arguments regarding the bureau before. In 2020, the court ruled 5-4 — along party lines, based on the presidents who appointed them — that the president could fire the CFPB director “at will,” not just for cause.

 119.
Democrats typically have argued the agency’s distance from Congress helps keep its focus on consumers. Republicans, meanwhile, often brand the bureau as a maverick agency that meddles with the free market.

 120.
“Despite the setback from today’s ruling, Republicans will continue the fight to rein in the rogue CFPB,” Rep. Patrick McHenry, R-NC, said in a statement Thursday.

 121.
McHenry, the House Financial Services Committee chair, urged support for a legislative fix to the funding structure — a bill that’s meant to “fix the mistakes of Dodd-Frank, which set the dangerous precedent of tapping the central bank to fund partisan political objectives.”

 122.
Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-MA, lauded the decision Thursday, saying the CFPB is “here to stay.”

 123.
“This isn’t the last attack on the CFPB we’ll see from Wall Street, the banks and their Republican allies,” said Warren, the bureau’s architect. “When an agency is this effective at sticking up for working families against industry’s consumer abuses, it’s an obvious target for multi-million-dollar lobbying campaigns. The CFPB will keep on doing its work to slash junk fees, fight giant banks when they cheat people, and level the playing field for everyone in this country.”

 124.
The Supreme Court may have showed its hand in October, when it heard oral arguments in the case. Several justices — Republicans among them — spoke skeptically toward the payday lending groups’ assertions.

 125.
“Congress has not determined the amount that this agency should be spending,” Noel Francisco, the former solicitor general who served as the groups’ lawyer, told the Supreme Court last fall. “Instead it has delegated to the director the authority to pick his own appropriation subject only to an upper limit that’s so high, it’s rarely meaningful.”

 126.
“I think we’re all struggling to figure out, then, what’s the standard that you would use,” Justice Amy Coney Barrett, a Trump appointee, asked Francisco. “How do you decide how much is too much or how specific is specific enough?”

 127.
The CFPB’s funding structure, Francisco argued, allows the CFPB to dip into a “perpetual” stream of funding.

 128.
Justice Brett Kavanaugh, another Trump appointee, dismissed that notion.

 129.
“Congress could change it tomorrow, and there’s nothing perpetual or permanent about this,” he said.

 130.

 131.
Barrett and Kavanaugh voted with the majority Thursday, along with Thomas, Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three Democrats: Sonia Sotomayor, Elena Kagan and Ketanji Brown Jackson. Justices Samuel Alito and Neil Gorsuch dissented.

 132.
“There is apparently nothing wrong with a law that empowers the Executive to draw as much money as it wants from any identified source for any permissible purpose until the end of time,” Alito wrote in his dissenting opinion. “The CFPB enjoys a degree of financial autonomy that a Stuart king would envy.”

 133.
Thursday’s decision also likely means forward motion on CFPB objectives that have been in somewhat of a holding pattern — specifically, a small-business data collection rule that a district court judge put on hold last fall pending the Supreme Court decision.

 134.
The U.S. District Court in Northern Texas also will likely need to revisit its decision last Friday blocking implementation of a new CFPB $8 late fee cap on credit card transactions, which it based on the Fifth Circuit’s earlier ruling regarding the CFPB’s funding mechanism. A CFPB spokesperson said earlier this week that the agency will continue to defend the rule.

 135.
But the CFPB likely also will gain confidence that its more recent proposals — on open banking and overdraft fees — could see less fervent pushback.

 136.
Still, at least one trade group, the Consumer Bankers Association, noted Thursday’s ruling “should not be considered a popular endorsement of the CFPB’s recent and seemingly political rulemakings, many of which have skipped important legal requirements and have raised concerns under the Administrative Procedure Act.”

 137.

 138.
“Any agency, even if its funding is constitutional, is, unfortunately, capable of engaging in rushed and ill-conceived rulemakings, as the CFPB has recently,” the CBA said, adding, though, that it is “heartened that this important legal question has been resolved.”

 166.
Shares of Canada Goose surged 16% on Thursday after the company reported earnings for the fiscal fourth quarter and announced it was expecting year-over-year sales growth for fiscal year 2025.

 167.
Here’s how the company did:

 168.

 169.
Earnings per share: 5 Canadian cents, which may not compare with estimates of 7 Canadian cents

 170.
Revenue: CA$358 million (US$263 million), which may not compare with the CA$315.5 million (US$232 million) expected by LSEG.

 171.

 172.
Revenue increased 22% from the same period a year ago.

 173.
Neil Bowden, Canada Goose’s chief financial officer, said on an earnings call with analysts that store comparisons were “relatively flat,” but year-over-year sales growth for the period was led by locations in Greater China — the region comprising Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan — which saw a 29.7% increase. The broader Asia-Pacific region excluding Greater China was up 29.1%, and North American sales saw an increase of 24.5%.

 174.
Bowden said the growth was supported by domestic shopping in the Chinese mainland, as well as mainland Chinese tourists driving “strong growth” in Hong Kong and Macao.

 175.
Online and in-store sales for the period, he added, were “bolstered by the company’s Lunar New Year marketing campaign and complemented by a longer peak selling period, given the later date of the Lunar New Year compared to last year.”

 176.
Moving forward, the CFO said the company is expecting mid-single-digit growth in revenue, which he expects will be guided by advances in the direct-to-consumer business. He also said he expects comparable store sales to grow “somewhere in the low single digits.”

 177.
Bowden said the company’s performance in China and Asia Pacific over the past three months is in line with the view of mid-single-digit growth for the luxury business. North America, however, has been under “a little bit more pressure,” he said.

 178.
This performance comes after the company announced back in March that it was going to cut 17% of its corporate workforce. Canada Goose reported that the layoffs had generated about 20 million Canadian dollars, or around $14.7 million, in productivity improvements and cost savings for the fiscal fourth quarter.

 209.
The agency cleared the drug, which will be marketed under the name Imdelltra, as a second or later line of treatment for people with advanced small-cell lung cancer. That means patients can take the drug if their cancer progressed while on or after trying one other form of treatment, which is typically a type of chemotherapy. Amgen’s drug is also known by its generic name tarlatamab.

 210.
In clinical trials, Amgen’s drug has been shown to reduce tumor growth and help people with small-cell lung cancer live significantly longer. Imdelltra is a huge opportunity for patients with the condition who often relapse quickly and need additional treatment options.”

 211.
Small-cell lung cancer comprises 15% of cases, or 330,000, of the more than 2.2 million patients diagnosed with lung cancer worldwide each year, Amgen said. Around 80% to 85% of people with small-cell lung cancer are diagnosed with an advanced stage of the disease, according to a study published in the Journal of Cancer.

 212.
There are around 35,000 patients with small-cell lung cancer in the U.S., Dr. Jay Bradner, Amgen’s chief scientific officer, told CNBC.

 213.
Small-cell lung cancer usually starts in the airways of the lung and grows rapidly, creating large tumors and spreading throughout the body. Symptoms include bloody phlegm, cough, chest pain and shortness of breath.

 214.
Only 3% of patients with small-cell lung cancer that has spread to other parts of the body live past 5 years, according to the American Cancer Society. That five-year survival rate is 7% among all patients with the condition, regardless of whether the cancer spreads. Amgen’s Bradner said patients with small-cell lung cancer typically have four to five months to live.

 215.
Lynne Bell, a small-cell lung cancer patient from Atlanta, Georgia, is an exception. She says she was “horrified” and “in a dark place” after she was diagnosed with an advanced stage of the condition in 2021.

 216.
But she started taking Amgen’s Imdelltra in an ongoing clinical trial in September after other treatments, including chemotherapy, stopped working. Since then, Bell said her tumors have shrunk significantly and cancer scans “look great.” She specifically noticed her pain go away after taking a second dose of Amgen’s drug.

 217.
When asked how long she would continue Imdelltra, Bell said, “If this medication is working and I’m not having any side effects, I’m good to go. I’m in it to win it.”

 218.
Maida Mangiameli, a small-cell lung cancer advocate and patient mentor from Naperville, Illinois, is also a survivor of the devastating disease. She was diagnosed with an advanced stage of the condition in 2018, but was deemed in remission this year, meaning the treatment she received has reduced the signs and symptoms of the cancer.

 219.
Mangiameli completed treatment five years ago, which included chemotherapy and 28 days of radiation therapy. She told CNBC that Amgen’s Imdelltra may “not be something for me, but it might be down the road.”

 220.
Mangiameli added that she’s excited to know that there will be another therapy option for other patients suffering from small-cell lung cancer. She said the development of new treatments for the disease has been “on the back burner” for several years.

 221.
Amgen’s Bradner also said treatment options “are pretty meager.”

 222.
“It’s just one of the most dreadful cancers and so we needed a new solution,” he said.

 234.
The approval is based on results from a phase two trial that followed more than 200 patients with small-cell lung cancer. Cancer tumors shrank in 40% of people given a 10-milligram dose of Imdelltra every 2 weeks.

 235.
Notably, the median time that people lived after starting 10-milligram doses of Amgen’s drug was 14.3 months. That compares with around six to 12 months with current treatments, according to the National Cancer Institute.

 236.
“These patients who would normally only have four to five months enjoy almost another full year of life,” Bradner told CNBC.

 237.
That time can make a huge difference for patients.

 238.
For Mangiameli, receiving treatment for small-cell lung cancer gave her years to grow closer to her grandchild, who was born not long before she was diagnosed with the disease.

 239.
“I had the impetus, the drive to make sure I survived … I just had my first grandchild, I have to live long enough for us to become pals,” Mangiameli said.

 240.
Meanwhile, Bell said taking Imdelltra has given her the time to travel, including on a trip with her daughter to San Diego.

 241.
“I’m trying to go as many places that I can get to,” Bell told CNBC.

 242.
Amgen is continuing to study Imdelltra in several trials, including some that will test the drug as an earlier line of treatment for small-cell lung cancer.

 243.
That includes a late-stage trial comparing Imdelltra with chemotherapy as a second-line treatment for the disease. Amgen also plans to start another phase three study on the drug as a first-line treatment for patients at an advanced stage of small-cell lung cancer.

 244.
“What makes us hopeful is, as you develop cancer medicines, that if they work in later stages of the disease, they can work even better when you move them” to first-line treatment, Bradner said.

 276.
The league ended its exclusive window to renew a deal with its two current media partners, Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery, on April 22. Since then, the league has set a framework to renew with Disney, bring in Amazon as a new third partner, and sell its other package to either Warner Bros. Discovery or NBCUniversal, according to people familiar with the matter. The league stands to triple the total aggregate dollars of a new deal from about $24 billion to $76 billion or more.

 277.
Warner Bros. Discovery continues to have discussions with the NBA about keeping the rights, according to people familiar with the matter. The league could still decide to simply renew with its incumbent partner, but it’s not likely, said two of the people, who asked not to be named because the talks are private.

 278.
The more probable path would be for the league to sign papers with NBCUniversal, formally securing its bid. That would trigger a contractual option for Warner Bros. Discovery to match the offer.

 279.
This is where things might get thorny.

 280.
Both the NBA and Warner Bros. Discovery have begun poring over legal language to determine if the league can reject a potential match, the people said. The contractual wording is vague, and it’s unclear if the NBA has full discretion to walk away from Warner Bros. Discovery if it matches the bid, said the people.

 281.
If Warner Bros. Discovery decides to match, and the NBA chooses NBCUniversal’s offer anyway, the sides may be headed for a lawsuit. Warner Bros. Discovery believes it’s fairly well protected by the contractual language, one of the people said.

 282.
Still, that remains a hypothetical at this point. It’s possible Warner Bros. Discovery won’t match NBCUniversal’s bid, which would avoid potential conflict.

 283.
Some league officials are worried Warner Bros. Discovery’s balance sheet can’t handle spending $2.5 billion a year on the NBA, according to people familiar with the matter. Warner Bros. Discovery has a market valuation of about $20 billion and an enterprise value of about $60 billion, including $43.2 billion of gross debt, as of the end of the company’s fiscal first quarter. The company had a leverage ratio (net debt to adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization) of 4.1.

 284.
Warner Bros. Discovery Chief Executive Officer David Zaslav has both publicly and privately preached the importance of financial discipline for the company.

 285.
Comcast has a market capitalization of about $154 billion and an enterprise value of $244 billion. Comcast’s leverage ratio is about 2.5.

 286.
NBA officials are more comfortable Comcast can pay what would amount to more than double the previous price for the package. Warner Bros. Discovery had been paying $1.2 billion per year to air NBA games. The new package also includes fewer games than the current one because the NBA is likely to introduce a third partner — most likely to be Amazon.

 287.
Spokespeople for Warner Bros. Discovery and the NBA declined to comment.

The new joint venture, one-third owned by each media company, will offer a bundle of sports networks and ESPN+ at a still to-be-determined price that’s less expensive than traditional cable. CNBC reported earlier this year the price could be around $45 or $50 a month. The service will debut in the fall, the companies have said.

 292.
The three companies haven’t formally signed paperwork on the venture yet as they await regulatory approval. If Warner Bros. Discovery loses the NBA, that will diminish the value of the service for consumers, as NBCUniversal and Amazon aren’t partners in the product.

 293.
Warner Bros. Discovery licenses the rights to other sports, including Major League Baseball, the National Hockey League, and the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s March Madness. The company will also have the NBA next year no matter what, as the new rights deal doesn’t kick in until the end of the 2024-25 season.

 294.
There’s been no discussion about shutting down the venture before it launches if Warner Bros. Discovery loses the NBA, according to a person familiar with the matter. Still, without the NBA, Disney and Fox would be contributing the lion’s share of sports content for the service while owning the same one-third stake in the venture. Disney’s ESPN and Fox own both college football and NFL packages, unlike Warner Bros. Discovery.

 375.
As fast food gets pricier, the nation’s largest grocer sees a sales opportunity.

 376.
On a call with CNBC on Thursday, Walmart Chief Financial Officer John David Rainey said some of the discounter’s sales growth in the recent quarter came from customers who turned to its grocery aisles for cheaper meals than they can get at quick-service restaurants.

 377.
“It’s roughly 4.3 times more expensive to eat out than it is to eat at home,” he said. “And that’s benefiting our business.”

 378.
As customers see some grocery items stay the same price or even become cheaper, the gap between buying menu items and cooking food at home has grown even wider, he said.

 379.
Walmart’s stock soared to an all-time high on Thursday, after it beat Wall Street’s quarterly sales and revenue expectations and said it expected its full-year results to be on the high end of, or better than, its previous forecast. Transactions in the U.S. rose 3.8%, as more customers visited its stores and website.

 380.
Walmart’s strong store traffic and quarterly results are at odds with those of restaurant companies, including McDonald’s, Starbucks and Yum Brands. Foot traffic to limited-service chains, which includes fast-food and fast-casual restaurants, fell 3.5% in the first quarter, according to Revenue Management Solutions. Restaurant executives blamed bad weather in January and February — and a consumer slowdown, particularly among lower-income diners.

 381.
Like many restaurants, McDonald’s has faced backlash to its prices. An $18 Big Mac combo sold at one of its franchised restaurants in Connecticut went viral on social media, prompting executives to defend the chain’s pricing on its conference call. The burger giant reported disappointing U.S. same-store sales growth of 2.5%, suggesting that its foot traffic fell during the quarter.

 382.
Still, McDonald’s CEO Chris Kempczinski said consumers, particularly those earning lower incomes, are hunting for deals. The chain will offer a $5 value meal starting June 25 for roughly a month.

 383.
Not all restaurants have had trouble getting diners to pay higher prices: fast-casual chains like Chipotle, Wingstop and Sweetgreen all reported strong sales in their most recent quarters.

 384.
Inflation data from the U.S. Labor Department reflects the difference between the price that customers pay for food they cook at home or pack for lunch, compared with what they pay at a coffee shop or restaurant. As of April, the price of food at home, a category that measures the total cost of food purchased at grocers or other food stores, was up 1.1% year over year. The price of food away from home rose significantly more: 4.1% year over year.

 385.
On the company’s earnings call on Thursday, Walmart U.S. CEO John Furner pointed to newer tool in Walmart’s arsenal that it can use to compete more aggressively with restaurants: its new grocery brand, Bettergoods.

 386.
The premium line includes unique flavors and merchandise tailored for more health-conscious customers or ones with a special diet, such as gluten-free or plant-based items. For example, it includes strawberries and cream-flavored Greek yogurt, curry chicken empanadas, restaurant-style chicken wings and salted caramel oat milk ice cream.

 387.
Seventy percent of the brand’s items are under $5, Furner said — a price point that may catch the eye of shoppers “trying to feed a family of four, five, [or] six.”

 429.
Federal prosecutors said in a court filing in Texas they are still determining “how it will proceed in this matter” and that Boeing will have 30 days to respond.

 430.
The airplane manufacturer broke the agreement by “failing to design, implement, and enforce a compliance and ethics program to prevent and detect violations of the U.S. fraud laws throughout its operations,” the DOJ said.

 431.
Boeing denied those claims.

 432.
“We believe that we have honored the terms of that agreement, and look forward to the opportunity to respond to the Department on this issue,” Boeing said.

 433.
In January 2021, Boeing agreed to pay $2.5 billion to settle a conspiracy charge with the Justice Department. After a roughly two-year probe, the DOJ accused the company of concealing information about its Max plane that had been involved in two crashes that claimed the lives of all 346 people on board.

 434.
Boeing had admitted that two of its 737 Max technical pilots “deceived” the Federal Aviation Administration about the capabilities of a flight-control system on the planes that was later implicated in the two crashes, the Justice Department said at the time.

 435.
“This is a positive first step, and for the families, a long time coming. But we need to see further action from DOJ to hold Boeing accountable, and plan to use our meeting on May 31 to explain in more detail what we believe would be a satisfactory remedy to Boeing’s ongoing criminal conduct,” Paul Cassell, a lawyer for crash victims’ families said in a statement on Tuesday.

 436.
The plane-maker has been under heightened federal scrutiny after a door panel blew out midair from a 737 Max 9 operated by Alaska Airlines on Jan. 5. A preliminary investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board said bolts that hold in the door plug, which fills an optional emergency exit, didn’t appear to be in place.

 437.
The near-tragedy has created a fresh crisis for Boeing, just as it was trying to stabilize its production and improve its reputation after the 2018 and 2019 crashes.

 474.
“We are seeing several trends, including accelerating adoption of leadership roles in product and partnerships, new routes up to the CEO role and shifting talent flows within the industry, as payments companies seek to build leadership muscle in new areas,” the report said.

 475.
As context for the report, SpencerStuart listed Visa, Mastercard and American Express as the top three payment companies, based on market capitalization, both in 2013 and 2023. Some companies, including First Data and TSYS, disappeared from the list of those studied, as a result of being acquired. Other upstart paytech companies, including Square parent Block as well as well as Stripe and Adyen, jumped onto the list, given the industry’s increasing digitalization.

 476.
“New generation payments companies with agile operating models and differentiated technology stacks have built formidable businesses, some of which are now among the largest payments companies in the world,” the report said. “At the same time, incumbency can be powerful, especially when combined with a commitment to innovation and technology.”

 477.
While roles for product development are well-defined, partnership roles are emerging as a new class of jobs in the payments industry.

 478.
“The proliferation of fintechs has enabled legacy payment companies to add new capabilities via partnerships instead of building them from scratch,” the report said. “Entering into joint ventures or strategic partnerships with innovative fintechs can sometimes pave the way for investing in or even outright acquiring them in the future, creating new pathways toward industry consolidation.”

 479.
Meanwhile, the C-suites of major payments firms have changed during the past decade. Gender diversity among the top payment CEOs shifted from all male CEOs in 2013 to 90% male CEOs in 2023, the report found.

 480.
In 2022, as demand for top payments executives was accelerating, candidates for product, operations, risk and marketing positions were in high demand, and compensation for such positions was rising too, according to interviews with recruiters at that time.

 481.
Demand for such roles has continued to grow over the past year, as retaining employees has become a challenge, according to executives at some companies.

The drug is available online and will be in all stores at the end of the month.

 511.
The drugstore retailer aims to boost the availability of the lifesaving medication in the U.S. as the nation grapples with the toll of the opioid epidemic and attempts to bring down alarmingly high drug fatality rates.

 512.
More than 645,000 people died from overdoses involving any opioid, including prescription and illicit opioids, from 1999 to 2021, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

 513.
Naloxone can temporarily reverse the effects of an overdose from opioids, including heroin and fentanyl, when administered in time. The drug blocks the effects of opioids on the brain, restoring normal breathing and preventing death.

 514.
Despite naloxone’s efficacy, access to the treatment “remains limited in many communities,” according to a Walgreens release.

 515.
The company said it will sell a two-dose pack of “Walgreens Brand Naloxone” for $34.99. That’s around $10 cheaper than the over-the-counter branded drug Narcan, which became the first prescription-free version of naloxone to win Food and Drug Administration approval last year. Previously, patients needed a prescription to access naloxone.

 527.
“That was a concerted decision to really do everything we can to increase accessibility, not just in terms of quantity and availability, but also in price,” Dr. Priya Mammen, senior medical director in Walgreens’ Office of Clinical Integrity, told CNBC in an interview.

 528.
The company said the launch of its prescription-free naloxone nasal spray comes after the FDA’s recent approval of the product. 529.
Mammen hopes Walgreens can help reduce the stigma associated with drug overdoses and naloxone use.

 530.
The drug “is not just for some people. It’s a lifesaving medication that can intervene on anyone at any age, anytime, and it’s something that families, individuals and communities can empower themselves by having it available and can be part of the solution,” she said.
