197. Hits, headline slots, awards and inter-band fighting. Since their 2003 debut, Kings of Leon has soaked it all up, rocked out, and, at times enjoyed the royal treatment.

 198.
With the release at midnight of Can We Please Have Fun (via Capitol), KoL’s career goes nine albums deep.

 199.
The award-winning sibling act’s latest LP is led by the shaggy rocker single “Mustang,” which cracked the top 5 of Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay and Alternative Airplay charts.

 200.
“Our only rule is to not have any songs on the album that we would be embarrassed if they were a single — so we try to make the album great, because we don’t know anything about the business side of things or algorithms or which song will do well,” bandmate Jared Followill tells Billboard.

 201.
“Now,” he continues, “it seems like you just need a great 15-second piece of a song to make it big on TikTok — slow it down, reverb it, make it huge. But we don’t know what works anymore, and I don’t think anybody knows … You just have to play ball a little bit, and hope that you’re with the right people who know what they’re doing.”

 202.
After working with Markus Dravs on their last two full-lengths, including 2021’s When You See Yourself, the quartet tapped Kid Harpoon last year to guide the new effort.

 203.
The rockers — Caleb (guitar/vocals), Nathan (drums), Jared (bass) and Matthew Followill (guitar) — burst into the mainstream in the late 2000s with smashes “Use Somebody” and “Sex on Fire,” both from 2008’s Only By the Night; the former song won record of the year in 2010, one of their three career Grammys.

 204.
Along the way, they’ve collected three NME Awards, two Brit Awards, and one Juno, headlined major festivals around the globe, including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, and Glastonbury, and landed a No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 2016’s Walls, one of the band’s four top 10 appearances on the chart.

 205.
KoL hits the road this June for a world tour in support of Can We Please Have Fun. Produced by Live Nation in North America, the jaunt will visit 26 cities across the U.S. and Canada, starting Aug. 14 at Moody Center in Austin, TX.

 256.
READ MORE: Steve Albini, 1962-2024: engineer who shaped rock’s most visceral moments

 257.

 258.
Earlier this week, the music world was shaken by the news of iconic rock engineer, producer and musician Steve Albini dying from a heart attack at the age of 61. Besides recording and producing some of rock’s biggest albums including Nirvana‘s ‘In Utero’ and Pixies‘ ‘Surfer Rosa’, Albini was also in several bands – one of which was Big Black.

 259.
Now, Big Black guitarist Santiago Durango has shared a statement with Rolling Stone about his former bandmate, in which he called Albini a “caring and giving person”. Describing Albini’s death as a “total gut punch”, Durango said to the publication: “I always believed Steve would outlive me. It makes me happy to know Steve lived a full life doing what he wanted to do.”

 260.

 261.

 262.
Durango continued: “What gets overlooked about Steve is that, when everything else is stripped away, he was simply a decent man. Everything makes sense when Steve is viewed through that lens.”

 263.
“He was a loyal and lifelong friend because he was a decent man. He was a much better friend than I deserved. He had a long marriage to Heather because he was a decent man. My heart aches for Heather. He never screwed anyone over because he was a decent man. He was a caring and giving person because he was a decent man. His unexpected passing has left a huge hole in my life.”

 266.

 267.
Albini started Big Black as a solo project in 1981 before Durango and Jeff Pezzati joined in 1983. The band released a collection of EPs, singles and two studio albums – ‘Atomizer’ and ‘Songs About Fucking’ – before breaking up in 1987.

 268.
Nirvana’s Kurt Cobain was a fan of Big Black, having watched them perform before their split. This would eventually lead to Albini recording and producing ‘In Utero’ for the band. Yesterday (May 9), Nirvana’s social media accounts shared the four-page letter Albini sent to them, proposing that he produce the record for them.

 271.
Dave Grohl said of Albini in his own tribute: “He was the smartest, most cynical producer/music critic/band leader/pundit, everyone was scared of him. Then you see pictures of him and he just looks like this skinny little guy. He’s just smarter and funnier and better at everything than everyone else in the world.”

 272.
Following the news of Albini’s death, Pixies, Benefits and more have paid tribute to the late producer – you can read them here. Jarvis Cocker also recalled the impact that working with the producer during ‘Further Complications’ had on him, and The Cribs shared their fond memories of the icon. PJ Harvey also said he “changed the course of my life” during sessions for her 1993 LP ‘Rid Of Me’.

 309. BTS member RM has dropped a new single, “Come Back To Me,” alongside a music video for the track. The song previews the singer’s forthcoming solo album, Right Place, Wrong Person, out May 24.

 310.

 311. RM first revealed “Come Back To Me” last summer with a surprise performance at BTS bandmate Suga’s encore concert in Seoul. At the time, he introduced the track as one of his favorites from his new project despite not yet having a title. RM wrote the lyrics for the song, while OHHYUK from South Korean band HYUKOH composed and arranged the track and Kuo from Taiwanese band Sunset Rollercoaster contributed guitar and bass. Singer-songwriter JNKYRD and San Yawn from Balming Tiger are also credited.

 312.

 313. The song’s music video was written, directed, and produced by Lee Sung Jin, who helmed Netflix show Beef. It stars Kim Minha, known for her role in the Apple TV+ show Pachinko.

 320. A press release notes, “Through ‘Come Back To Me,’ RM explores the central theme of the new album, ‘right and wrong,’ delving into the paradoxical desire to venture into new territories while longing to remain content in the present.”

 321.

 322. Right Place, Wrong Person features 11 tracks and marks RM’s second solo effort. The press release describes it as exploring “relatable sensations and moments of feeling like a stranger, out of place.” The album follows his December 2022 album Indigo, which featured standouts such as “Wild Flower” with Youjeen, “Still Life” with Anderson .Paak, and “Yun” with Erykah Badu. He also dropped a 7-track mini-album back in 2018.

 329. RM and his BTS bandmates are currently completing their required military service in South Korea and are expected to reunite in 2025. “What I’m thinking right now is, these days, when I’m doing my solo projects, is, this is just like a vacation to get back to where I was, which was BTS and ARMY,” RM said in August 2023.

 415.
Dennis Thompson, the drummer of influential American rock band MC5 has died. He was 75.

 416.
According to a report from the Detroit Free Press, Thompson died on Thursday (May 9) at the MediLodge of Taylor, where he had been hospitalised and was in the process of recovery after suffering a heart attack in April.

 417.
Thompson was the last surviving member among the original MC5 line-up. His death comes after the passing of guitarist and co-founder Wayne Kramer in February after succumbing to pancreatic cancer. The band’s former manager John Sinclair, who was also a renowned and respected poet and activist, died last month.

 418.
In April, MC5 were finally announced as a long-overdue inductee to the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame later this year. Becky Tyner, widow of MC5 vocalist Rob Tyner told the Detroit Free Press that Thompson’s first reaction was: “It’s about fucking time!”

 419.
MC5 formed in 1965 and disbanded in 1972. Over the course of their career, the band released two studio album, 1970’s ‘Back in the USA’ and 1971’s ‘High Time’.

 420.
“We thought we were a good band and were on our way. The band liked to rehearse — everybody loved to play,” Thompson recounted to the Detroit Free Press. “We loved what we were doing. It was fast cars, hanging out at the drag strip. It was the best way to break away from the system where you went straight to a factory if you didn’t go to college.”

 421.
Following the news of his death, the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame wrote on X (formerly Twitter: “Dennis Thompson earned the nickname “Machine Gun” through his aggressive drumming with Detroit’s Motor City 5 (MC5). Punk and heavy metal progenitors, the MC5 kicked out the jams and politicized all bystanders with their unapologetic driving rock & roll and antiestablishment messaged.”

 422.
“Influenced by Elvin Jones and Keith Moon, Thompson’s fast, hard-hitting drumming appeared on the MC5’s groundbreaking 1969 LP Kick Out The Jams and on both of the group’s 1970s studio albums, ‘Back In The USA’ and ‘High Time’. Thompson was the last surviving member of the classic lineup.”

 471. Travis has released a new single, “Raze the Bar,” featuring Coldplay‘s Chris Martin and the Killers‘ Brandon Flowers. The song recounts a bittersweet story about the closure of Black and White bar, a much-loved New York haunt for the band, recounting a fictional last night there before it closed.

 472.

 473. “There was a great bar in New York City,” Fran Healy said in a statement. “It didn’t have a name but everyone called it Black and White on account of the black and white striped awning that hung over the entrance. They had poetry nights, great DJs, open mic nights. If you played a show at Irving Plaza or Webster Hall, chances are you ended up at Black and White ’til the wee small hours. One of the owners, Johnny T, looked after so many artists and bands over the years. If that bar could talk, what a story it would tell.”

 474.

 475. He added, “During the pandemic, their landlord refused to negotiate a reduced rent and they had to close. So, in the middle of the night, they turned up with a truck and removed every single trace and fixture of the bar. Then they white washed the whole space so it could never be repeated. ‘Raze the Bar’ is a song about a fictional last night in the bar. Johnny is in there, Jack, Richard and Johnny’s brother and bar co-owner Chris. The cameos were almost an afterthought! I just called Chris Martin in a bit of a panic because I couldn’t figure out what the track sequence should be. When Chris heard it, he was like, ‘That song is the best thing you’ve ever written!’ And because he and Brandon Flowers both live quite near…”

 482. “Raze the Bar” comes off Travis’ forthcoming LP, L.A. Times, which was produced by Tony Hoffer. It’s the second track to emerge from the album, out July 12 via BMG.

 483.

 484. “L.A. Times is our most personal album since The Man Who,” Healy explained. “There was a lot of big stuff to write about back then, the tectonic plates had shifted in my life. I was 22 when I was writing those songs. They were my therapy. Over 20 years later and the plates have shifted again. There’s a lot to talk about.”

 491. Travis hit the road in support of the album this summer. The band will perform with the Killers across their 16-date U.K. arena tour through June and July, and will return to Europe in August and September for their first headlining tour across the continent since 2016. More U.K. tour dates will be announced soon.

 492.

 493. Healy spoke to NME about the tour with the Killers, noting, “We’ve been friends for years and years now and Ronnie [Vannucci Jr.] and Brandon are the sweetest guys. It’s nice to be a support band again too. I love being a support band. It reminds me of when we supported Oasis. We went on every single night to blow them off the stage, which is what a good support band should be doing. You go on, the other band watch you from the wings going, ‘Fuck’. And then they come on and do a better show because of it.”
