We arrived at beautiful Instow, North Devon Yacht Club at a very reasonable time which was unusual for us. With clear skies and a stiff breeze we put the boat together and stowed her on the beach alongside some familiar names. We then stopped for refreshments and a BBQ dinner. Pleased that we weren’t rushing around in darkness Rach made a point of us nipping to the campsite and putting the tent together so we could relax for the rest of the evening. It was all going so well… Then we discovered that the tent poles were no where to be seen! Rach emptied every bag, the boot, the back seats but just they weren’t there. It was now 7pm on a Saturday so after frantically raiding two Tesco supermarkets we managed to find a cheap dome tent and set up….it was far from the niceties we were used to but it would do for the weekend.
We headed back to the bar and all was well laughing it off with a couple of drinks

Day One. It was an early start at the clubhouse for breakfast and boy did we need a good coffee for the race briefing! as they went through the complexities of the tides, areas to avoid and the possible courses they may lay including one not in the sailing instructions, which had everyone scratching their heads until a white board was brough out.
After getting our heads around it we suited up, headed to the beach and got afloat….and float was pretty much it, there was barely a breath of wind which resulted in us paddling to the start line. The first two races of the weekend were mostly drifting with the occasional light gust but from which direction was a complete lottery. This made both races very tricky and we suffered ending up at the back of the fleet, but not last.
Due to the lack of wind delaying the first start we were only able to get 2 races completed, and to add insult to injury a nice breeze arrived as we headed back to shore. The Club put on a fantastic buffet in the evening which the fleet raided like a flock of seagulls, along with a band of locals singing a variety of songs to get the place dancing. A notable mention to Robbie-John throwing the best shapes of the night!

Day Two. Another early start due to Sunday’s lack of wind and today’s healthier forecast the race crew said they would attempt to squeeze in four races as long as everyone was punctual. Unusually for the Dart 18 fleet we were set a triangular course, but this turned out to provide some excellent racing as a sand bar acted a 4th mark of the course. With the conditions vastly improved on day 1 we went afloat keen to make a mends.

Race 3 The first race on Sunday with a congested and slightly biased start line we got caught behind the front line of boats and made a slow get away but we kept pace with the mid fleet. The race was mostly uneventful. We did however steer a little too close to the sandbank scuffing the rudders and finding that one of them was now jammed down! Something we had to consider for the return to shore. We were on much better form and came 16th.

Race 4 The wind had got up a little bit with some very vicious gusts. 2 boats ahead of us got clobbered and capsized. Having stayed upright and made some better tactical decisions we were riding in the low teens until a minor altercation with the single hander – Both of us had tacked close together and we floated into each other, Rach dashed out onto a hull to prevent a collision and we both managed to get off without any major damage. Sadly we lost a few places whilst trying to untangle ourselves and slipped over the finish in 22nd.

Race 5 We got ourselves into what felt like a better position but got squeezed out on the start line at the committee boat end. Ezri saw it coming early enough and we bailed out did a 360 and got away in clean air giving us the opportunity to tack off early. With some great gusts we made it to the windward mark in 8th position. We had some good close racing keeping up with “Pirate-Cider” & Debs/Barry. On Lap 2 we continued to battle with Debs/Barry just keeping them behind and made multiple close crosses with Grant Piggot before getting a big gust and pulled away. We arrived at mark2 with Debs/Barry having got ahead of us and another dart on the right just as another gust arrived. We reached the mark almost 3 a breast and called water believing we had established an overlapped on the other dart. Whilst we all narrowly avoided each other, words of disagreement were exchanged with the other dart. Unsure as to who was in the right and us not wanting to lose another good finish we did a 360 turn losing us 4 positions but still came in 13th.
After crossing the finish we headed back into the beach, remembering to stop a little early to remove our jammed rudder and prevent any further damage. Moggy was packed back up onto the trailer and we headed back to the club for prize giving and to say our goodbyes.

Overall a bit of a calamitous weekend but enjoyable none the less, Very much looking forward to the next event in Rutland!

We would like to share an important update to the Mumbles Yacht Club Changing Room Policy, which has recently been […]

We would like to share an important update to the Mumbles Yacht Club Changing Room Policy, which has recently been reviewed and revised following extensive discussion, feedback, and consultation.

As many of you will recall, we issued a statement earlier this year outlining how we initially approached this sensitive topic, including how the original policy was developed in consultation with the RYA and in accordance with the Equality Act. We also shared our openness to reviewing the policy in light of legal interpretation, member concerns, and safeguarding needs.

What’s Changing

Following a thorough review, the Club has now updated its Changing Room Policy to designate our existing male and female changing rooms as single-sex spaces, based on biological sex. This approach is lawful under the Equality Act 2010 and the Gender Recognition Act 2004 where it serves the legitimate aim of safeguarding and protecting the dignity of all members.

We recognise that this change may impact some members. To support those who require additional privacy or do not identify with a binary gender, the Club will:

Construct a dedicated third changing space as soon as feasible. This facility will not only provide privacy for gender non-conforming individuals but also ensure instructors have an appropriate space to change during youth training and safeguarding-sensitive sessions.

In the meantime, provide a temporary changing space in the Training Room or Office. Please note that this interim space will be suitable for changing only and will not contain showers or toilet facilities.

Continue to maintain a clear separation between adult and youth training changing times to uphold our safeguarding standards.

Continue offering privacy measures such as using towels or dryrobes, changing during quieter times, or arriving in sailing gear.

Why We’ve Made This Change

Our aim has always been to provide a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment. The updated policy reflects legal guidance around protected single-sex spaces while also introducing practical solutions to support all members.

This revision was informed by:

Ongoing feedback from members.

Direct consultation with external groups and legal perspectives.

Our safeguarding responsibilities to all age groups.

A re-engagement with the RYA in light of their recently updated guidance.

Consideration of recent legal developments, including the High Court’s clarification on the lawful provision of single-sex spaces.

What’s Next

We remain committed to inclusivity and transparency as we move forward. We are:

Exploring the design and construction of the planned third changing space.

Actively seeking funding opportunities to support this significant development. If any members have suggestions for relevant grants, or would be interested in helping write or lead funding applications, we would be very grateful for your support. The Committee would welcome your involvement.

Welcoming further feedback and involvement from members.

If you’d like to discuss the policy or have any concerns, a member of the Club Committee will be happy to speak with you in confidence.

The policy can be viewed on our Policies web page.

Thank you for your ongoing patience and support as we work to serve the entire MYC community.

As you may be aware, our Club recently implemented a new changing room policy, which has generated significant interest from both members and the public. Given this attention, we believe it is important to share how we arrived at our current policy and outline the steps we are taking moving forward.

We would also like to apologise for any delay in providing this update. We recently received a formal complaint regarding the policy, and we felt it was appropriate to address this matter before briefing the membership and the public.

How We Got Here

Towards the end of 2023, after we showed our support for inclusivity by flying one of the Pride flags during Pride Month, a member raised concerns regarding our changing room facilities and whether we had a policy on their use by transgender individuals. At that time, the Club did not have a specific policy in place, so we established a sub-committee to explore the issue and determine an appropriate course of action.

Recognising that we were not experts in this area, we worked closely with the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) to develop a policy that was inclusive, aligned with the Equalities Act, and sought to address the concerns of all members. As we believed we were following legal guidance, we did not conduct a wider consultation with members before implementing the policy. Our intention was to ensure compliance with equality law rather than to create a policy based on personal opinions or preferences.

As part of this process, we considered several options, including the possibility of replacing our male and female changing rooms entirely with a gender-neutral “changing village” model. This would have meant that all changing spaces within the Club were gender-neutral, without designated male or female areas. However, due to structural constraints and the significant costs involved in modifying an older building, this was not deemed financially viable. This challenge contributed to our decision to develop a purpose-built centre across the road, offering modernised changing facilities.

Throughout our discussions, it became clear that this is a highly complex issue. The advice we received consistently emphasised that blanket exclusions of protected groups are only legally permissible in very specific circumstances, none of which applied to our Club.

Policy Implementation and Public Response

In January, we reviewed our policy to ensure it was as clear as possible and submitted it to the RYA for further guidance. Once we were confident that it aligned with best practice, we publicly shared the policy with our members.

Following this, the policy received significant attention from various sources, including media outlets, high-profile figures in sport, and our own members. Additionally, the Women’s Rights Network organised a demonstration outside the Club.

Some media reports overlooked key aspects of our policy, particularly our continued commitment to safeguarding children. To clarify, our policy ensures that youth and adult changing times are separate, but there are no entirely separate facilities for these groups.

Additionally, we have heard concerns from members and others that the policy means we are no longer providing single-sex protected spaces. We recognise that this is an important issue for many and are committed to carefully reviewing this aspect as part of our next steps.

We also received constructive feedback, highlighting areas where the issue is more nuanced than initially perceived. These discussions have been valuable in helping us consider how best to balance inclusivity, legal obligations, and the needs of all our members.

Importantly, we want to emphasise that we are open to change. If we have misinterpreted guidance, misunderstood the legal framework, or simply got something wrong, we have no issue with reviewing and adjusting the policy accordingly. Our priority is to create an environment that is fair, safe, and welcoming for all members.

Next Steps

To ensure a fair and informed review of our policy, we have established a new sub-committee separate from the original one. The key objectives of this group include:

Reviewing and refining the existing policy in light of feedback received.

Engaging with knowledgeable external groups, including the Women’s Rights Network, with whom we already have a scheduled meeting.

Exploring potential facility modifications, such as obtaining quotes to assess the feasibility of creating a dedicated gender-neutral changing area.

Ensuring compliance with legal guidelines, by evaluating whether a gender-neutral facility would align with the Equalities Act while also ensuring that single-sex protected spaces remain appropriately safeguarded.

Carrying out an Equality Impact Assessment.

Reviewing the need for wider member consultation, to ensure that future decisions on this matter appropriately consider the views of our membership while maintaining legal compliance.

We welcome input from any of our members who would like to share their advice and experience as we conduct this review. If any of our members have professional expertise in equality law, safeguarding, or inclusion—particularly in relation to sport or changing facilities—we would be especially grateful for your support. Please get in touch with the Committee if you are able to assist.

If you have any suggestions for grants that may help us make changes, or would be willing to help us complete grant applications if needed, that would also be greatly appreciated.

We aim to complete this next stage of review and consultation by the end of April, and we will provide a further update to members once that work is complete.

Our aim is to continue fostering a respectful and inclusive environment at the Club while taking into account the perspectives and rights of all members. We appreciate your ongoing engagement in this process and will keep you updated on developments.
