Cannabis software technology platform Flowhub on Monday launched an integrated web-based ordering solution to help high-volume dispensaries increase revenue for pick-up orders placed online.

Designed by former Wayfair e-commerce experts, Flowhub Ecommerce is meant to increase the average online order value and drive higher conversion rates, according to a company news release.

“Shoppers expect a seamless, digital-first experience, but outdated e-commerce tools leave dispensaries dealing with broken integrations, inaccurate menus and lost revenue,” Kyle Sherman, founder and CEO of Denver-based Flowhub, said in a statement.

According to the company, Flowhub Ecommerce offers:

Live inventory sync, in which online menus update as inventory changes, ensuring product availability is accurate.

Integrated pre-payment via ACH: Customers can pay ahead for online orders directly through their bank, allowing dispensaries to capture their full order value upfront and reduce no-shows.

Personalized shopping experience: Returning customers who verify their phone number are instantly matched to their profile, unlocking loyalty rewards, discounts, and product recommendations.

Fast setup with custom branding: Retailers can use Flowhubs catalog and pre-built templates to deploy a fully branded menu with no coding or integration mapping required.

Data from more than $1.5 million in early-access Flowhub Ecommerce sales indicates average order values are 27% greater than previous platforms.

“Retailers don’t just want a pretty website,” Sherman added. “They need a platform that converts.”

Congressional lawmakers sent another clear signal that they intend to halt federal protections for intoxicating hemp-derived THC products…

Congressional lawmakers sent another clear signal that they intend to halt federal protections for intoxicating hemp-derived THC products when a bill that closes the so-called “hemp loophole” passed the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee on Thursday.

Although the redefinition of hemp proposed by U.S. Sens. Mitch McConnell and Jeff Merkley would not take effect for one year, it would effectively ban 90% of hemp products on the market, hemp advocates warned.

There’s bipartisan support on Capitol Hill for ending the status quo for hemp-derived THC products under federal law.

The 2018 Farm Bill triggered a nationwide rush of intoxicating hemp-derived products, including drinks and edibles as well as THCA flower.

In the years since, many states have rushed to ban or restrict hemp-derived THC products, but federal lawmakers have yet to follow suit.

McConnell, a Kentucky Republican and the former Senate majority leader who signed the 2018 Farm Bill with a hemp pen, is particularly keen to eliminate the loophole before his retirement.

Redefining hemp under federal law to limit THC, THCA

The fiscal 2026 Agriculture Appropriations Bill, which passed Senate Appropriations on a unanimous 27-0 vote on Thursday, creates separate definitions for “industrial hemp” and “hemp-derived cannabinoid products.”

It also clarifies that total cannabinoid content must account for tetrahydrocannabinolic acid – an oversight in the 2018 Farm Bill that, despite later clarification from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, some hemp operators have used to defend sales of THCA flower.

Under the bill, industrial hemp, which remains legal under federal law, is:

Cannabis sativa with a “total” THC concentration, including THCA, of 0.3% or less.

Grown for fiber, fuel, food, or “any other non-cannabinoid derivative” final product.

The definition of “hemp-derived cannabinoid products” would also prohibit both synthetically derived THC, such as delta-8 and delta-10 THC.

Proposal would ban 90% of hemp products

Those changes in federal hemp law would mean most hemp-derived THC products are illegal, said Jonathan Miller, chair of the U.S. Hemp Roundtable.

“A blanket ban on more than 90% of hemp consumable products is not the right path,” he said in a statement, adding that the one-year delay on implementation from Merkley creates “time to fix the language.”

In a statement, Jim Higdon, co-founder of Kentucky-based Cornbread Hemp, pointed to state regulations that impose strict age-gating and product-safety requirements – but still allow adults to access products with hemp-derived THC.

“We agree with Sen. McConnell that the current state of the hemp market falls short of the promise made by the 2018 farm bill, but we disagree with his remedy,” he said.

“We can solve this problem without banning all hemp products.”

The Senate language mirrors a June proposal from House Republicans that, as written, would similarly ban most hemp-derived THC products on the market.

The University of Mississippi lost its contract with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) that allowed it…

The University of Mississippi lost its contract with the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) that allowed it to cultivate marijuana for federally approved studies, Cannabis Wire first reported.

Ole Miss was the only institution in the U.S. allowed to grow cannabis for research purposes for over five decades under an exclusive contract it’s held since 1968.

That contract will now end in 2028, and the school will not seek to renew it, a university spokesman told Marijuana Moment.

That’s despite opening a new Resource Center for Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research earlier this year.

In 2021, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) started licensing more cultivators to provide more variety of research-grade cannabis and improve product quality.

But even with the new licenses, the DEA had continued to source its research marijuana from the university.

So far, the DEA has licensed at least 10 additional growers but has not entered contracts with any of them.

Now that the contract is terminated, it’s uncertain where NIDA will acquire cannabis for future studies.

The shift could signal a broader change in federal marijuana policy.

Although the DEA is considering rescheduling marijuana under federal law, which would open up possibilities for cannabis research, hearings before the agency’s top administrative law judge have been paused since January.

The DEA can resume hearings at any time and is required to give an update on the process to Chief Administrative Law Judge John Mulrooney every 90 days.

In the last update earlier this month, the DEA reported no progress.

Homes experience significantly greater appreciation in value in states where the adult use of cannabis is legal as compared to those jurisdictions where it is not, according to an analysis provided by Clever Real Estate.

“States with legal recreational cannabis have seen home values climb by $222,958 over the past 15 years, compared to $162,631 in states where it is illegal — a $60,327 difference,” authors of the report determined.

They added, “In 2024, the average home in a recreational state was worth $447,635 — about 39 percent more than the typical home value of $320,904 in states where cannabis cannot be used recreationally.” Conversely, nine of the ten states with the lowest home value growth over the past 15 years have not legalized the adult-use cannabis market.

“Despite lingering stereotypes and outdated fears, misconceptions about cannabis legalization and its effect on the housing market are finally fading,” the study’s authors concluded. “Cannabis isn’t dragging down home values. It’s helping them grow, and states that have yet to legalize it are missing out on thousands in potential home value appreciation.”

The report’s findings are consistent with those of other analyses reporting an association between the establishment of legal marijuana businesses and elevated home values.

“These data should mitigate concerns that the establishment of regulated adult-use marijuana markets negatively impacts community safety and prosperity,” NORML’s Deputy Director Paul Armentano said. “Rather, cannabis legalization is a proven economic driver. Regulated markets create jobs, disrupt the underground marketplace, and provide for new tax revenues that are redirected back into the local community — resulting in greater economic growth and prosperity, in addition to safer communities.”

Attending MJBizCon for the first time is exhilarating and overwhelming.

It’s also essential for anyone who wants to make their mark in the cannabis industry.

The world’s largest B2B cannabis and hemp expo, MJBizCon 2025 is Dec. 2-5 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Think of it as a comprehensive deep dive into everything from cultivation to retail, with endless opportunities for learning and connecting.

Here’s what you need to know to get the most out of the show.

Planning your attack

Don’t overdo it or you’ll wear yourself out. These are long days and even longer nights and you don’t want to be running on fumes by the end of the conference.

Here’s how to plan your schedule like a seasoned pro:

Prioritize ruthlessly: Take a good look at the conference schedule, especially the pre-show forums on Dec. 2 covering finance, marketing, science, psychedelics and the new Business 101 Forum. Decide what’s most critical to your goals and mark those sessions as “must attend” and everything else as “nice to have.”

Embrace the Expo Hall: The Expo Hall is massive, with dedicated pavilions for Cultivation, Processing, Packaging & Lab and Retail. You will get lost, and your feet will hurt. Instead of wandering aimlessly, identify key exhibitors or product categories you want to explore beforehand. This helps you navigate more efficiently and avoid sensory overload.

Build in downtime: Schedule breaks. Whether it’s a quick coffee, a walk outside or just finding a quiet corner to decompress, taking a break will allow you to recharge.

Leverage the app: The official MJBizCon app includes the full schedule, exhibitor lists and a map. Download it in advance and use it to favorite sessions and create your personalized agenda. It’s a lifesaver.

Networking that works: Beyond the business card

Networking at MJBizCon is where the magic happens, but it’s not just about collecting a stack of business cards. It’s about making genuine connections.

The approach: Don’t be afraid to walk up to someone and introduce yourself. A simple “Hi, I’m John, and I’m interested in your pre-roll machines” can open a conversation. Look for people who are standing alone or in small groups that seem approachable. And remember, everyone there wants to network, too.

Listen more than you talk: Ask open-ended questions. Learn about people’s challenges, successes and what they’re hoping to gain from MJBizCon. People love to talk about themselves and their work. This will give you valuable insights.

Be authentic: Most memorable connections come from genuine conversations, not sales pitches. Share a bit about your journey, your passions and what drives you in the industry. Relatability builds trust.

Take notes (discreetly): After a conversation, jot down a quick note on their business card or in your phone about what you discussed. This helps immensely when you follow up. For example, “Met John, talked about his new cultivation tech, has a golden retriever named Sparky.”

The follow-up that makes a difference: This is where most people drop the ball. A generic “Nice to meet you” email won’t cut it. Reference something specific you talked about. “It was great meeting you at MJBizCon. I really enjoyed our conversation about your new cultivation tech and hope to connect again soon.” Or, if appropriate, “As we discussed, here’s that article on pre-rolls.” A personal touch goes a long way and shows you were truly engaged.

Use networking events: MJBizCon offers structured networking opportunities like “Empowering Women” and “Achieving Equity” events, show floor networking lounges and “State Takeovers.” These are fantastic for meeting people with shared interests or geographical connections. There are plenty of after parties that encourage networking in a more relaxed atmosphere. New this year is the NuWu Takeover where you’ll be able to see, smell and sample products

In the wake of Thursday’s deadly immigration raids at two legal California marijuana cultivation sites, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) on Monday repeated accusations that Glass House Brands was using undocumented workers and child labor.

However, state marijuana regulators told MJBizDaily that “no minors were on the premises” during a May 2025 site visit.

Tricia McLaughlin, DHS’s assistant secretary for public affairs, aired the claim during an appearance on Fox News in which she also criticized Gov. Gavin Newsom for speaking out against the raids.

On Thursday, federal authorities detained 319 people suspected of entering the United States illegally, according to DHS.

Agents also “rescued 14 children from potential forced labor,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said during a July 12 update.

It was those children that have become the focus of messaging from Washington in the days since.

“We think that they likely faced exploitation, potentially slave labor, human trafficking,” McLaughlin said during a Monday news segment also posted to DHS’ main account on X.

Kyle Kazan, Glass House Brands’ president, did not immediately respond to a request for comment from MJBizDaily.

In a statement last week, the company said it complied with “valid” immigration warrants and denied it “knowingly” broke any immigration laws.

First known death from ICE raids in marijuana farm chaos

Thursday’s raids at Glass House Brands locations in Ventura and Santa Barbara counties left at least one worker dead from an apparent fall.

Jamie Alanis, 57, died on Saturday from injuries sustained during the raids Thursday, the first known death stemming from the Trump Administration’s ongoing immigration sweeps.

Alanis reportedly called family members to report he was hiding from immigration agents before falling 30 feet from a roof and breaking his neck, according to the Associated Press.

In addition to Alanis’ death, Thursday’s raids also resulted in a criminal manhunt for an individual suspected of firing a handgun in agents’ directions.

That incident, caught on video by news helicopters and posted widely online, was part of a larger chaotic clash.

Protestors who arrived on scene squared off against agents in camouflage and body armor, who deployed less-lethal rounds and tear gas to disperse crowds, among whom could be seen adolescents and children.

Child labor allowed on farms – but not marijuana farms

Glass House operated cannabis grows and vegetable cultivation at large greenhouses in Carpinteria in Santa Barbara County and Camarillo in Ventura County.

The company is currently defending itself from lawsuits filed by workers who claimed they were denied overtime pay and meal breaks to meet unrealistic work quotas.

However, the Trump Administration’s accusations of child labor appear to be the first time those allegations have been made.

Federal labor law allows children as young as 12 to “work outside of school hours in non-hazardous jobs on farms that also employ their parent(s) or with written parental consent.”

However, California’s legal marijuana industry imposes stricter standards, requiring workers to be at least 21.

In a statement Monday, the California Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) said that inspectors “observed no minors on the premises” during a May 2025 site visit.

However, “(a)fter receiving a subsequent complaint, the Department opened an active investigation to ensure full compliance with state law,” DCC spokesman David Hafner said in an email.

The DCC declined to share the complaint.

“We encourage anyone with information about child labor or trafficking at any facility to immediately contact the Department,” Hafner’s statement added.

“The Department of Cannabis Control does not participate in ICE raids.”

Eight-seven percent of Americans say that marijuana ought to be legal for either medical or adult use, according to nationwide polling compiled by the Pew Research Center.

The results are consistent with those of prior Pew polls finding that only about ten percent of US adults support a blanket policy of cannabis criminalization.

“The federal government’s ‘Flat Earth’ position on marijuana policy is remarkably out of step with both scientific and public consensus,” NORML’s Deputy Director Paul Armentano said. “Federally elected officials who refuse to take action to end cannabis criminalization do so at their own political peril.”

Fifty-four percent of respondents said that cannabis should be legal for both medical and adult use, while 33 percent of those surveyed supported medical marijuana legalization only. Consistent with prior polls, support for legalizing cannabis is strongest among liberal-leaning and younger voters (those ages 18 to 29), and it is weakest among more politically conservative-leaning voters and those over the age of 75.

Twenty-four states have legalized marijuana for adults and 40 states regulate medical cannabis access to qualified patients. Some 54 percent of Americans now reside in a jurisdiction where the adult-use cannabis market is legally regulated, while 79 percent live in a county with at least one marijuana dispensary.

Additional public opinion polling data is available from NORML.

Massachusetts cannabis businesses are giving up their licenses at a higher rate than ever.

Through May 19 of this year, 23 marijuana operators surrendered or allowed their licenses to expire, according to state Cannabis Control Commission data cited by the Boston Business Journal.

Four of the licenses were for retail marijuana stores. That’s the same number of stores who let their permits lapse during all of 2024.

With economic uncertainty and increased competition both in Massachusetts and from marijuana businesses in neighboring states, experts’ predictions that 2025 would see more business closures are coming to fruition.

“I think that this year is going to potentially be one of those years where we see a lot of businesses close,” Ryan Dominguez, executive director of the Massachusetts Cannabis Coalition told the Boston Business Journal in a February interview.

“That was part of the story last year, and I think we’re going to see even more of those happen this year.”

Among the businesses to close up shop are marijuana multistate operator Tilt Holdings, which sold off one store and closed another in February.

Many retailers say they’re hamstrung by high taxes imposed by Massachusetts-specific “community impact fees” that have put at least one retailer in six-figure debt.

Though many companies lost licenses, it doesn’t mean they are out of business because some have multiple licenses.

Additionally, 38 new cannabis operators opened between Jan. 1 and June 20.

Outrage and rancor swelled Friday after federal immigration raids at two state-licensed marijuana cultivation sites in Southern California…

Outrage and rancor swelled Friday after federal immigration raids at two state-licensed marijuana cultivation sites in Southern California operated by publicly traded Glass House Brands.

The situation quickly drew national attention, including from Gov. Gavin Newsom, who criticized President Donald Trump for his heavy-handed deployment of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in the state.

Masked agents in body armor and camouflage on Thursday deployed tear gas and less-lethal rounds to deter a swelling crowd of protesters decrying the raids at licensed cultivation operations in Camarillo and Carpinteria.

ICE agents detained at least 10 cannabis cultivation workers, Santa Barbara Independent reported.

The agents also took “multiple individuals” into custody for “impeding” the operation, according to Bill Essayli, the U.S attorney for the Central District of California.

At least one protester appeared to fire a pistol toward federal law enforcement, Essayli said.

The FBI is actively searching for the shooter, he added.

Child-labor allegations denied

The raid on the farm also uncovered 10 minors, all of whom were undocumented, according to Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott.

Glass House is “now under investigation for child labor violations,” Scott wrote in a post on X, formerly known as Twitter.

Glass House CEO Kyle Kazan told MJBizDaily the situation was “dynamic” and he could not immediately comment.

In a statement posted to the company’s social media accounts, Glass House Brands said the company complied with “valid” immigration and naturalization warrants.

The company also denied employing children, which would be a violation of cannabis industry age requirements as well as state and federal child-labor laws.

“As per the law, we verified that the warrants were valid and we complied,” Glass House said in its statement.

“Workers were detained and we are assisting to provide them legal representation.

“Glass House has never knowingly violated applicable hiring practices and does not and has never employed minors.

“We do not expect this to affect operations moving forward.”

Spotlight on California marijuana immigration raid

The Glass House raid was the latest in a string of high-profile actions by the Department of Homeland Security and ICE in the Los Angeles area.

“Kids running from tear gas, crying on the phone because their mother was just taken from the fields,” posted Newsom, who used the opportunity to criticize Trump.

“Trump calls me ‘Newscum’ – but he’s the real scum.”

Video from advocates on the scene and news helicopters showed protestors hurling rocks at unmarked cars and agents firing tear gas through vast fields.

Democratic U.S. Rep. Salud Carbajal rushed to the scene of the raid in Carpinteria, in southeastern Santa Barbara County.

At the scene, Carbajal said, ICE agents denied him entry to observe.

“This was completely unacceptable,” he said in a statement.

“And let me be clear: These militarized ICE raids are not how you keep our communities safe.

“This kind of chaos only traumatizes families and tears communities apart.

“They are also a gross misuse of limited resources and a betrayal of the values that define us as Americans.”

Raid revives Glass House labor law, illicit-market allegations

With more than 150 licenses for cultivation, retail and manufacturing operations throughout California, vertically integrated Glass House is one of the largest marijuana companies in the state.

The company – led by Kazan and President Graham Farrar – has been involved in other controversies.

Last year, for example, Glass House workers sued the company in Los Angeles County Superior Court alleging “systemic” employment law violations, including unrealistic work quotas that resulted in skipped meal breaks and unpaid overtime.

Glass House also frequently comes up when illicit marijuana “diversion” is discussed, with multiple reports of Glass House-branded product for sale on unlicensed dispensary shelves in New York.

Glass House has always stridently denied illicit market activity.

In a statement to MJBizDaily, Department of Cannabis Control (DCC) Director Nicole Elliott said she understood the raid to be “focused on immigration enforcement” rather than anything to do with cannabis.

“We want to remind our licensees: Do not let fear and intimidation divide or destabilize your workplace or your community,” she said.

“California remains committed to thoughtful, lawful governance and to protecting the integrity of our regulated cannabis market.”

The spectacle was “beyond outrageous,” said Marc Cohodes, an investor who’s backed Glass House.

“The government is aware of cartels, illicit crime, the whole thing and yet, and yet, they decide to spend their resources going after a total legal company that pays the state of California hundreds of millions of dollars excise tax,” he told the Los Angeles Times.

The consumption of THC-dominant cannabis products is associated with sustained reductions in anxiety and depression, according to newly published data in the Journal of Affective Disorders.

Investigators affiliated with the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore assessed the use of state-authorized medical cannabis products in a cohort of 33 participants with clinically significant anxiety or depression. Subjects in the study were naïve to cannabis. Study participants used a variety of cannabis products, including botanical and edible preparations, as needed for six months.

“Initiation of THC-dominant medicinal cannabis was associated with acute reductions in anxiety and depression, and sustained reductions in overall symptom severity over a 6-month period,” researchers reported. Improvements in patients’ quality of life and overall health satisfaction were also observed. Medicinal cannabis use was not associated with the development of physical or psychological problems.

“Collectively these data offer insights into the therapeutic effects of medicinal cannabis when it is used by a population with clinically significant anxiety and depression,” the study’s authors concluded. “The positive response, reflected by reductions in anxiety and/or depression by most participants, support the need for continued investigation of medicinal cannabis or related cannabinoid therapeutics as pharmacological treatments for anxiety and depression symptom relief, ideally with randomized, placebo-controlled trials.”

NORML’s Deputy Director Paul Armentano said that the study’s findings are “consistent with those of prior assessments concluding that cannabis provides patients with sustained ‘statistically significant improvements’ on validated measurements of anxiety and depression.” Armentano also acknowledged that the adoption of cannabis legalization laws is associated with declines in prescriptions of anxiolytic drugs like benzodiazepines, as well as anti-depressants.

According to survey data, those who acknowledge consuming cannabis for purposes of self-medication are most likely to report doing so to alleviate pain, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and/or depression.

An abstract of the study, “Acute and chronic effects of medicinal cannabis use on anxiety and depression in a prospective cohort of patients new to cannabis,” appears in the Journal of Affective Disorders.
