45.

Executive Producer and Acting CEO Sofi Berenger, outgoing chair James Seabright, and the whole team at the King’s Head Theatre are delighted to announce that Robert Khan has been appointed as the new chair of the charity’s board of trustees, taking up his post following the board meeting on Tuesday, 14th May 2024.

 46.
James Seabright said, “It has been a privilege to serve as chair of the KHT board for the last eight years, and to oversee the charity’s move from its original pub backroom home to a purpose-built venue next door. With the new theatre open and thriving, it feels like the right moment to hand over to a new chair to work with the brilliant staff team led by Sofi Berenger. I am delighted with the trustees’ decision to appoint Robert Khan, who was a great champion of the theatre in various capacities before he joined the board last year. I look forward to continuing to produce shows at KHT, and to playing an active role in the Angels of Angel fund supporting new shows at the venue.”

 47.
The board has also appointed three committed and experienced new trustees: senior global business executive Rutger Beelaerts, BBC News creative director Chris Cook and Park Theatre’s director of sales and marketing Dawn James.

 48.
Robert Khan has substantial leadership experience, managing large teams at national organisations, such as the Law Society of England and Wales and the General Medical Council, as well as a wide range of experience as a board member and non-executive director. From 2010 until 2018 he was an Islington councillor where he served as chair of the planning committee and as the Borough’s first Arts Champion. He is also a playwright writing (with Tom Salinsky) numerous plays which have variously been presented in London and Edinburgh, including Coalition, Kingmaker, Impossible and Brexit, all of which have had smash sell-out runs and critical acclaim.

 49.
Robert Khan said, “I’m delighted to take up the role of chair of the King’s Head Theatre stepping into James Seabright’s enormous shoes, helping the organisation build on his fantastic legacy moving the KHT to its new, bigger permanent home – working with Sofi Berenger and her brilliant, hard-working team. While the venue is brand spanking new, what won’t change is our artistic policy, showcasing plays to musicals, opera and cabaret, to drag and comedy – while building something new from the glorious legacy of the old pub theatre – presenting work that’s joyful, irreverent, colourful and queer – ensuring something for everyone.”

 50.
Rutger Beelaerts has had an extensive career as a senor global business executive, developing projects on a worldwide scale and leading industry organisations, living and working in the UK, the Netherlands, Singapore and the USA. He is passionate about theatre and has served as a member of the Founder’s circle of the Ensemble theatre, Houston, as well as a board member of the Alley theatre, a leading regional theatre in the USA.

 51.
Chris Cook is currently the creative director for BBC News where he leads on the design, look and feel of on-air news broadcasts, and UK general election coverage. He has over twenty years’ experience working in senior roles at the BBC, also including stints working on the Edinburgh review show and as a network director.

 52.
Dawn James is currently sales and marketing director for Park Theatre and has had an extensive career in arts marketing. Before joining Park in July 2016, Dawn was marketing manager at Tricycle Theatre in Kilburn for two and a half years and has also previously worked at Polka Theatre, Akademi South Asian Dance and Watermans Arts Centre. She has a degree in modern drama from Brunel university.
53. Sofi Berenger said “A huge thank you to James Seabright, and other departing trustees, whose hard work and commitment to the charity extended above and beyond all expectations. Without him, we surely would not have opened our new theatre, and his legacy will be felt forever. The charity is truly indebted. But with our new doors open, a new chapter has begun, and I am beyond delighted to be working with Robert and our other new trustees on some truly exciting plans, building on our unique heritage by focussing on our artistic programme and our important artist and community development work.”

 91.

The number of young motorists aged 17-20 punished for driving without insurance has increased by more than a quarter (28%) between 2022 and 2023 and by almost 200% since 2021 according to new statistics analysed by the UK’s leading road safety charity IAM RoadSmart.

 92.
Data gathered through a Freedom of Information (FOI) request to the DVLA reveals that in 2021, there were 2,902 IN10 endorsements added to licence holders of this age grouping. This increased to 5,486 (+141% change) in 2022 and reached 6,316 for 2023 (+197% vs 2021; +28% vs 2022). For those aged 21-24, the picture is more mixed. While IN10 endorsements rose from 12,309 in 2021 to 13,138 in 2022 (29% increase), they fell to 11,103 in 2023 (a decrease of 8% compared to 2021).

 93.
An IN10 endorsement – the code used by the police for ‘using a vehicle uninsured against third party risks on a licence’ – will typically be added to a driver’s licence following an investigation by police forces, either after a camera detects an uninsured vehicle on the road or a driver is stopped by a police officer and reported. IN10s must stay on a driving record for four years from the date of offence. This research relates to the number of new IN10 endorsements added to driver records by age and calendar year.

 94.
These hugely concerning endorsement figures coincide with a period of rapidly rising annual car insurance premiums with drivers of all ages feeling the pinch. Average annual premiums increased by a quarter (25%) between 2022 and 2023**. Thankfully, more recent indicators suggest motor insurance costs for 2024 appear to be topping out** from the eye-watering increases of the past 18 months.

 95.
Additional research conducted by IAM RoadSmart*** of 2,437 members in February 2024 reveals that almost half (49%) say their most recent car insurance renewal price is ‘significantly more expensive’ compared to the previous year. More than two-thirds (69%) of members now identify the cost of insurance as the biggest challenge for young drivers. A pragmatic 60% of members believe a young driver advanced qualification should be recognised by insurers as a method to reduce costs while improving driving standards.

 96.
Given these findings, IAM RoadSmart is today warning of an uninsured driver epidemic which threatens to spiral out of control unless action is taken by the UK Government. Today we launch three calls to action as part of our campaign to help young drivers:

 97.
The Treasury should halve the current standard 12% rate of insurance premium tax (IPT) on motoring policies of those aged under 25 to 6%.
98. The Treasury should zero-rate IPT on policies where licence holders under the age of 25 have completed an ‘approved driving or riding course’ which would encourage take-up of a skills-based assessment.
99. Update the current UK Government road safety strategy with a focus on skills development and training (including a form of graduated driver licensing) and create a Young Drivers Taskforce within the Department for Transport which focuses on issues specifically impacting younger drivers.
100. Driving a vehicle without insurance will result in a £300 fixed penalty and six points on a licence. However, should the case go to court, punishments could be more severe including an unlimited fine. Even if the vehicle itself is insured, drivers can still be punished without the correct insurance policy to drive it and police may even invoke section 165 of the 1988 Road Traffic Act**** giving them powers to seize an uninsured vehicle. Rising numbers of uninsured drivers often leads to an increase in everyone’s premiums because those involved in a collision with an uninsured driver will need to claim from the Motor Insurance Bureau (MIB) which levies any company that underwrites motor insurance premiums.

 101.
IAM RoadSmart Director of Policy and Standards Nicholas Lyes said:
102. “It is legal requirement to have the correct insurance to drive, so it is deeply concerning to see a surge in young drivers breaking the law in this way. Unless there is intervention, we risk an epidemic of uninsured younger motorists taking to the roads.

 103.
“Sadly, this is likely a consequence of the soaring costs of insurance premiums over the last 18 months. For young drivers who have recently passed their test, the cost of learning to drive, getting a vehicle, taxing it and then insuring it is becoming an extremely costly process. While the insurance sector believes we may now be over the worst of price increases, falling premiums will feel like a lifetime away for newly qualified drivers. Perversely, young drivers are also disproportionately paying more tax when insuring their vehicle because insurance premium tax is levied at a standard 12% rate on already costlier premiums, meaning something of a windfall for the Treasury.

 104.
“This is why we are launching a three-point action plan for Government to give young motorists some respite. Moreover, it’s time the Government, the road safety sector and the insurance industry got around the table to thrash out some longer-term solutions which should include a form of graduated driver licensing. Making sure we upskill young drivers of today will ensure we have better drivers for tomorrow.”

 105.
The post Soaring motor premiums fuelling spike in uninsured younger drivers appeared first on Manchester TV.

 121.

 122. Hartley Botanic, England’s most historic and respected Glasshouse and Greenhouse manufacturer, is showing its largest ever Victorian-style Glasshouse at RHS Chelsea Flower Show next week. At 8.146m long and 4.128m wide, the stately Victorian Manor Glasshouse reflects a trend for larger and grander Victorian-style structures amongst its customers and evokes the scale of the business’ global expansion. Joined by a Modern Opus Glasshouse, a practical Wisley 8 Grow and Store and a Patio Glasshouse, these handcrafted, luxury structures have all been made in Hartley Botanic’s more than 100-year-old founding factory in Greenfield, Lancashire, overlooked by the dramatic Pennines’ Chew Valley.

 123.
Tom Barry, CEO of Hartley Botanic said; “Hartley Botanic has a long history supplying Glasshouses for the Royal Horticultural Society and has been exhibiting at RHS Chelsea Flower Show for at least 70 years. This year, we are showing our largest ever structure, which is testament both to customer preferences and our growth as a business. With our master craftsmen still working from our original factory, gardeners globally are now enjoying Hartley Botanic Greenhouses and the USA is our largest growth market. RHS Chelsea this year is an exciting ‘line in the sand’ for us, showing how far our Glasshouses ‘proudly made’ in Lancashire have come.”

 124.
Hartley Botanic’s commitment to English manufacture and local employment (over 80 percent of its factory workforce is recruited from the surrounding area) comes at a time when its beautiful structures are being sold in increasing numbers around the world. The business is a manufacturing success story, both in terms of its growth and in its uncompromising commitment to the English provenance of its Greenhouses, made with traditional, time-honoured methods of craftsmanship.

 125.
In April last year, the business was presented with a Queen’s Award for Enterprise in the International Trade category by the Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester Mrs Diane Hawkins JP LLB, for Outstanding Short-Term Growth following a 144 percent increase in its overseas sales between 2017 and 2020, and the subsequent transformation of its strongest markets. The business has been selling its Glasshouses and Greenhouses internationally for over 20 years and has enjoyed a strong following in the USA, Germany, and Scandinavia, but in the last seven years, its global trade has built significantly. American customers particularly, are falling for both the businesses’ quintessentially English-looking Victorian Glasshouses and its contemporary Modern Horticulture range which has proved popular in the state of California. Hartley Botanic’s entire and incomparable range is available for sale worldwide, which includes its Victorian, Heritage, Modern and bespoke structures.

 126.
Despite this, when it comes to safeguarding its reputation, Hartley Botanic has chosen to balance modern innovation with maintaining approaches that have worked for over 85 years. This includes keeping manufacture firmly in its original factory, continuing local employment and, in some cases, using traditional tools. The approach is working. Today the brand is synonymous for crafting ‘the finest Greenhouses money can buy’ through the very highest standards of hard-won experience, craftsmanship and service. A hugely respected brand within the horticultural world, it is the manufacturer of choice for leading organisations, institutions, and designers. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) has also officially recognised the company’s enduring commitment to English craftsmanship by endorsing its entire product range[1].

 127.
Tom Barry, CEO of Hartley Botanic said; “We have always had a strong domestic demand for our Greenhouses but, over the last few years, demand has become decidedly international.

 128.
“As a business, we have made a proactive decision to keep manufacturing firmly in England. Fundamental to our business’ longevity and its trusted reputation is the knowledge and craftsmanship built-into every single one of our Greenhouses. Committing our production to the north of England is critical to maintaining the quality of our product – ensuring its unparalleled durability, design, and beauty. We are so confident of the structural integrity of our ‘made in England Greenhouses;’ a 30-year Lifetime Guarantee is offered[2].

 129.
“It is a great source of pride for our Lancashire team to know that the Greenhouses they make on a daily basis are being treasured and enjoyed around the world.”

 130.
The business continues to grow, currently employing over 150 colleagues within its operations worldwide.

 131.
Hartley Botanic was founded in 1938 by brothers Vincent (RHS fellow) and Norman Hartley following their ground-breaking aluminium Greenhouse design, the first time (to our knowledge) aluminium had been used in Greenhouse construction and marking a huge improvement on its wood and wrought iron Victorian forerunners. The English manufacturer is an authority on Greenhouse design and use over the decades, having been making its beautiful and elegant handmade, made-to-order horticultural buildings for 85 years.

 148.

Elephant Kind are on the kind of journey that few bands ever experience – and the best is yet to come. Back home in Indonesia they were big enough to fill arenas and play shows with the likes of Franz Ferdinand and The xx. But the call of challenging themselves and finding a broader international audience was too much to resist, and so they started again in London as complete unknowns. Almost two years later and they’re firmly in the ascendancy, a rise that continues with today’s release of their new single ‘Louder’.

 149.
‘Louder’ is a defining moment for Elephant Kind. Its shimmering alt-pop is rich with luminous synths and a flood of indie exuberance, with the distinctive soulful expression of Bam Mastro’s vocal adding the kind of magnetic allure that helps the band step out from the pack. It’s a song that raises the bar for the band, but in a way that feels like a natural next step from last year’s ‘Super Blue’ EP.

 150.
Written solely by Elephant Kind – completed by Bayu Adisapoetra (drums) and Kevin Septanto (bass) – the band’s collaborators on ‘Louder’ further underline their momentum. The track was produced by Iain Berryman (beabadoobee, Wolf Alice, Young Fathers) and was mixed by the Grammy-winning Oli Jacobs (Harry Styles, The 1975, Taylor Swift).

 151.
Bam says, “The chorus of ‘Louder’ might make it seem like a part anthem at first glance, but is actually an intimate experience of observing separation from the sidelines and complexities of being caught in the crossfire of separation. We’re ecstatic to announce our latest track, marking our return after a year and a half since our last EP.”

 152.
While the odds have been stacked against Elephant Kind since relocating to London in 2022, they’ve battled back with dogged determination. But they’ve been in this position before, making the most of any opportunity they could find en route to becoming one of Indonesia’s biggest bands, and now they’re doing all they can to replicate that success half a world away from home. They documented their first year in the UK with the short film ‘From Indo To England’, an inspirational story which captured the imaginations of supporters including NME, Clash and Dork. Since then, they completed their debut sold-out UK headline tour late last year before recently returning to action with a big reaction at a recent Sofar Sounds show.

 245.

‘Hic’ (Latin for ‘here’) is the third single from the debut solo album by former M+A and Santii member, Michele Ducci. The track is a more experimental departure from the rest of the album, fusing loose, percussive Beat poetry with ravaged vocals.

 246.
According to Ducci, “‘Hic’ came to visit me towards the end of SIVE’s recordings. I was listening to the tapes, it was night, the bathroom in the house had flooded and I had lost my voice. Not being able to continue recording the other songs because of the hoarse and broken voice I decided to make a new one exactly with hoarse and broken voice. I started improvising recording myself without instruments and only with what was left of my voice.

 247.
“Keeping in mind as canvas some verses by the poet Henry De Régnier I began the musical navigation with this sort of indirect free speech that revolves around the Copernican question of a taking place = x, a ‘hic’ more than a ‘now’, not extensive, but intensive, which is the root of every extended space. An immense threshold which is like a shadow “qui se retire ou s’allonge, selon l’heure du jour qui croît ou du jour qui décline, Marque le cours du temps et la saison divine où l’aube est toujours claire et le soir toujours long.”

 248.
“In two hours the song was done with some addition of drums and piano. And the nine-song album became a ten-song album…And with my vocal exhaustion I happily looked upon it as a kind of bizarre drunken Armstrong. I am still grateful for that experience!!!!”

 249.
Accompanying the single is a video directed by Marco Catapano, which was filmed in Greece between Paxos and Corfù.

 250.
Michele Ducci’s album will be released on 7th June on CD in a colour printed card wallet as well as digitally. Pre-order CD here:
268.

New research reveals concerning behaviours among British holidaymakers striving for a tan, with 6.4 million admitting to avoiding sunscreen*. The research, conducted by O2 to mark Skin Cancer Awareness Month, found that nearly one in five (18%) would go abroad to a warm climate without packing sun protection, thinking they’ll be ‘fine’ without it – with this feeling higher amongst men (24%) than women (12%).

 269.
Specifically among those in Greater London, 36% admit to being more focused on getting a tan than considering the risks of exposing their skin to the sun, despite almost eight in 10 (79%) feeling that getting sunburnt has a negative effect on their holiday.

 270.
Looking more widely at Brits’ sunscreen habits while abroad, other reasons for Brits neglecting to wear sunscreen while away include forgetting or not buying any while on holiday (24%) and alarmingly, some even doubting whether it works (5%). 17% of those visiting the pool or beach admit to having previously forgotten sunscreen compared to just 8% forgetting their mobile phone**.

 271.
The research also found a surprising 7% deem sunscreen unnecessary as they have black or brown skin – which is a misconception commonly believed, with almost one in 10 (9%) of the general population thinking those who have skin of colour do not need sunscreen.

 272.
Among those Brits who do apply sunscreen, nearly one in 10 (8%) only do so when they feel they ‘might’ be burning, despite 76% admitting that getting burnt has a negative effect on their holiday. Furthermore, two in five (39%) admit to frequently forgetting to reapply sunscreen throughout the day*** – even though guidance from the British Skin Foundation suggests reapplying at least every two hours, especially after swimming or sweating****. Of those who do remember to apply sunscreen, a third (33%) only apply it to select areas such as their arms, face and shoulders, opposed to a recommended full body application.

 273.
Despite 90% of Brits thinking it’s important to protect their skin*****, only two in five (43%) always wear sunscreen while on holiday, with 65% stating they prioritise packing their mobile phone over bringing sunscreen (57%) when jetting off into the sun.

 274.
Interestingly, 85% of individuals who frequently forget to apply sunscreen while on holiday expressed a desire for a product that could assist them in remembering, with 16% indicating that they would be more diligent with their sun protection if they had a product to remind them. In response, O2 has partnered with The British Skin Foundation and organic skincare brand Green People to create a limited-edition smartphone accessory complete with a built-in sunscreen tube, to help people protect themselves effortlessly throughout the day.

 275.
Available in selected O2 stores and inspired by Hailey Bieber’s viral Rhode ‘Lip Case’, the chic phone accessory features a handy 10ml tube of Green People’s best-selling SPF30 sunscreen, ensuring users will have an emergency ‘top up’ to hand. Naturally unscented and enriched with over 60% organic Aloe Vera, Green People’s SPF gently soothes sensitive skin whilst it protects and contains Berry Wax to provide a splash of water repellence.

 276.
Christian Hindennach, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, said: “As the only major network operator to offer free EU Roaming, O2 is helping to protect customers from getting burnt by unwanted roaming costs, as well as by the sun. The findings from this study are truly concerning, with 6.4 million people admitting to dangerously avoiding sunscreen. That’s why we’ve partnered with The British Skin Foundation and Green People during Skin Cancer Awareness Month to create a smartphone accessory as a helpful prompt to ‘top up’ whilst on holiday. Whether you’re chilling by the pool or on the go this summer, we’ll have you covered both with free EU roaming up to 25GB and a helpful reminder to keep protected when in the sun.”

 277.
Green People founder, Charlotte Vøhtz, said: “We all need to protect our skin from the sun every day, so it’s a concern to know that so many are choosing to only use SPF once their skin starts to burn or not to apply it at all. Don’t let sunburn steal your summer memories. Make SPF your priority!”

 278.
Lisa Bickerstaffe, Head of Comms at The British Skin Foundation, said: “At the BSF we know that UV rays damage the skin and can potentially cause health problems in the future, so we’re proud to work together with O2 on this initiative by providing expert advice on sun safety to educate the public.”

 279.
The limited-edition free mobile phone accessory will be available at selected O2 stores across the country from 15 May 2024, while stocks last, including London, Cardiff, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Belfast, so people, regardless of their mobile provider, can grab one ahead of the holiday season. Members of the public simply need to head to a participating O2 store and say “don’t get burnt” to a staff member at the till to get theirs.
