40.

With three spots left to fill for the 2024-25 season, the Iowa State women’s basketball team came two steps closer to filling out the roster. Lily Hansford of Oregon State and Lilly Taulelei from UMass both committed to Iowa State on Sunday.

 41.
Hansford hit the transfer portal following an Elite Eight run at Oregon State. The Beavers will play in the West Coast Conference next season following the disbanding of the Pac 12.

 42.
Hansford visited Ames the previous week and also received an offer from Miami, but in the end, chose to become a Cyclone.

 43.
In two seasons with the Beavers, Hansford played 59 games and started in four, averaging 15.4 minutes per game. Playing time increased from year one to year two by nearly five minutes.

 44.
This past season, the 6-foot-2 guard averaged 5.1 points and 1.9 rebounds per game. Hansford shot 43.9% from the field and 44.9% from 3-point range as a sophomore.

 45.
The Green Bay, Wisconsin, native will be another contributor from beyond the arc for the Cyclones. Hansford’s best game came against Utah on Jan. 28, shooting 4-for-4 from three and scoring a season-high 12 points.

 46.
UMass center Taulelei announced a commitment to Iowa State after spending one season with the Minutewomen. The New Zealand native played in 31 of the 32 games for UMass and started 22 times.

 47.
The 6-foot-3 center was a powerhouse inside and shot 45.3% from the field and 50% or higher from the floor in 15 games. Taulelei averaged 6.7 points and 2.5 rebounds per game while averaging 24.2 minutes.

 48.
Taulelei scored double-digit points in six games, with a career-high of 14 coming against Maryland, which she would later match against Dayton. She grabbed her top rebound total of 10 against VCU.

 49.
Taulelei will join Audi Crooks as a center for Iowa State. It was uncertain who would replace Isnelle Natabou after she entered the transfer portal, but Taulelei will be the one to back up Crooks inside.

 50.
Iowa State now has 12 of its 13 roster spots filled for the 2024-25 season. The transfer portal will close soon, so time is of the essence to secure a final player.

 69.

There are few people in your life who will believe in you no matter what, but the only one who can make things happen is who you look at in the mirror.

 70.
When I first came to Iowa State, I mostly did it because I knew it was the next step in my life. Sure, I loved the campus and I knew I wanted a career in journalism, but going to college was just the next step for me.

 71.
I did not have a drive to put myself out there my first couple of years, especially when it came to getting a jumpstart on my career. I remember often thinking about why opportunities came to some people and how they were finding the success that I sought.

 72.
I wish I could remember the day or what specifically made me switch my mentality, but I left the ‘poor me’ attitude behind going into my junior year.

 73.
I had to ask myself ‘Why would someone believe in me when I do not believe in myself yet?’

 74.
The truth is, success is not going to just fall on your doorstep. Whether it is a job, an internship or a degree, you have to be the one to set yourself up for success.

 75.
The ‘I will do it tomorrow’ lifestyle does not work in the real world, especially for a college student still trying to find their place.

 76.
I started paying attention in my classes, constantly looking for opportunities for my career and surrounded myself with some people I am lucky to call my friends.

 77.
In college, I also learned that you can not be afraid to fail because failure teaches you how to get better. Looking back, I was scared to put myself out there because I was scared to fail.

 78.
You can not let failure keep you from the success you desire, because if you have not heard it yet, I will be the first to tell you that you will fail.

 79.
It is unlikely that you will get the first job you apply for, but you can’t let that stop you from applying for 10 more. At this point, you have bought into your dream, and now it is your turn to sell it to employers.

 80.
I got really lucky that I found the Iowa State Daily and the people there. Not only did I create an extensive portfolio for myself, but I had great coworkers who turned into close friends.

 81.
I was reluctant to join at first, again just doubting myself, but I never regretted it after I saw what it was doing for my career and my personal life.

 82.
All the lessons I learned and the friends I gained along the way at Iowa State are because I took a chance and bet on myself. Thank you to everyone who helped me along the way, you know who you are.

 83.
I am not saying my experience should be a model for everyone and be posted on the walls of the Memorial Union. But it should be an example for anyone who thinks they can’t do something.

 84.
Anyone can do anything, you just have to get out of bed and go do it.

 189.

I wanted to find success in college, just like I am sure almost everyone does. The problem was that when I first arrived on campus four years ago, I had the path to get there all wrong.

 190.
If it was not for my freshman year roommate bringing me out of my shell, I never would have found the confidence to get involved on campus.

 191.
If it was not for the phenomenal sports editor I had when I was getting started at the Daily, I never would have become sports editor down the line.

 192.
If it was not for the great group of people in my time as editor-in-chief, I would have never made it through the year.

 193.
When you see someone giving an acceptance speech for what may be the greatest award they ever receive, there is always a long list of people to thank. This list of people is not just a list of people from their life, but also a lesson for all of us. For some reason, we all think we have to make it through life’s challenges alone, but that is never the case.

 194.
My story, just like the award winners of the world, will only be a happy one as long as I am surrounded by the people that make it happy.

 195.
The difficult part of this process, for me and for many others out there, is actually finding these people. In college, it was almost like my best friends and biggest supporters just knocked on my door. Regardless of the odds that out of the tens of thousands of people that attend the university, one is bound to find a few great friends, I like to think fate brought us together.

 196.
I have met a lot of smart people at Iowa State, and the thing they all seem to have figured out is that you simply cannot do it alone.

 197.
I never had the most confidence in myself, but wow did I get lucky to find the right people.

 198.
Since I did not know how to end my final story with the Iowa State Daily, I decided I will close with a quote from my favorite movie: “Monsters University.”

 199.
“I act scary, Mike. But most of the time, I’m terrified.” – James P. Sullivan.

 220.
This is the first conference win for Iowa State since its upset over Oklahoma State on April 13. The win improves the Cyclones to a 20-28 record overall and 6-16 in the Big 12.

 221.
Karlie Charles shuts down UCF from the circle

 222.
It was a near-perfect day for Karlie Charles. The right-handed pitcher played all five innings and gave up just one hit.

 223.
This was the least amount of hits this season Charles has given up in a game when pitching two or more innings.

 224.
In all, Charles threw 51 pitches in five innings, 41 of which were strikes. Charles totaled three strikeouts on the big day.

 225.
Hitters connect all day

 226.
Iowa State had one of its best showings on the offensive side Friday. The Cyclones had 22 at-bats and recorded 11 hits.

 227.
Left fielder Angelina Allen went 3-for-3 with an RBI, which brought the hit total up to 71 on the season. Right fielder Tiana Poole also was perfect from the batter’s box, going 2-for-2.

 228.
The other two of the hits for Iowa State were home runs, including the walk-off homer that forced the run rule.

 229.
Alesia Ranches calls game

 230.
Senior Alesia Ranches had a personal best game of the season against the Golden Knights. The shortstop went 2-for-3 in the box, but it was the second connection that drew all the attention.

 231.
Up 4-0 entering the fifth inning, Iowa State started with a single from Poole, followed promptly by a home run from Maddie Knowles to put the Cyclones up by six.

 232.
After the two-run shot from Knowles, a walk from McKenna Andrews and a double by Allen had runners on second and third for Iowa State.

 233.
Ranches was up to bat next and blasted the three-run homer that sealed the game for the Cyclones. It was a sixth home run of the season and gave Iowa State the win.

 234.
Iowa State and UCF will clash in game two of the three-game series at 1 p.m. Saturday. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+

 261.

The next stage of Immediate Access emerges for Iowa State. Instead of paying for each online textbook individually, the digital course materials program is launching Immediate Access ONE in fall 2024.

 262.
“Student success, affordability and access is the primary mission of Immediate Access ONE,” said Heather Dean, the assistant director of the ISU Book Store.

 263.
Immediate Access ONE will charge each full-time undergraduate student enrolled a cost of $259 per fall or spring semester, regardless of their major or the number of books assigned by professors.

 264.
“I think the primary benefit of the Immediate Access ONE program will be greater convenience for students. I am not convinced, however, that students will consistently save money with the program,” said Aaron Wood, associate teaching professor. “Students have the ability to opt out of the program, of course. It will be the student’s responsibility to estimate their potential expenses prior to the opt-out deadline and determine if the flat fee will benefit them or not. In my opinion, many students, especially freshmen, are unlikely to conduct a budget projection and will likely pay the fee no matter what.”

 265.
This program will cost $69 per term for the winter and summer semesters.

 266.
“We’re 90% digital, so there is some of that print hanging on, but [Immediate Access ONE] makes that whole process easier for students to not have to navigate when adding and dropping courses,” Dean said. “The week leading up to classes and the first week of classes, a lot of adds and drops are happening, so it helps students with that navigation as it is automatic.”

 267.
If students wish to opt out of Immediate Access ONE, they can. They have the first 10 days from the start of classes to opt out and receive a refund. This means opting out of Immediate Access ONE for all classes, not just on a class-by-class basis.

 268.
“We’ve gotten the textbook cost per semester to drop from the $600 range to $259, which wasn’t easy,” Dean said. “We’ve been doing a lot of work with peer institutions, the faculty and university administrators to get that pricing down. We will conduct an end-of-the-year analysis, and it is really important that the rate maintains or even lowers.”

 269.
The flat rate of $259 will be credited to a student’s U-Bill account within seven to 10 business days after successfully opting out.

 270.
“We do acknowledge students who may not have a lot of books, and that’s okay,” Dean said. “Just go ahead and opt out, get your refund and carry on with what you need for your classes that semester.”

 271.
If students wish to opt out, they can purchase required textbooks individually through the ISU Book Store or from a different retailer.

 272.
To opt out of the Immediate Access ONE program:

 273.

 274.
Log into Canvas

 275.
Go to Immediate Access on the navigation menu

 276.
Click Opt-Out in the upper corner

 277.

 278.
Afterward, you will receive an email confirmation from no-reply@verbasoftware.com with the subject line “YOUR PREFERENCE TO OPT-OUT HAS BEEN RECORDED.” Your U-Bill will be credited within seven to 10 business days.

 279.
“Everybody has their unique course schedule, and that is why there is the opt-out choice. If you do the math and this program doesn’t make sense, the book list and the price comparison tool will still be available to you,” Dean said. “I think we are going to find, though, a lot of students are going to do the math, and this [Immediate Access ONE] is really working and worth it.”

 280.
According to the ISU Book Store, students can purchase individual eBooks and courseware with the Compare and Purchase option on the item in Canvas. Once you complete the purchase, digital activation instructions will be provided to you via email.

 281.
“I am disappointed that the program appears to have been formulated and implemented without faculty and student feedback,” Wood said. “Textbook publishers were aware of the program well before we were. In fact, publishers appear to be capitalizing on this opportunity and encouraging faculty to adopt additional course materials, claiming there is no extra cost to students.”

 282.
Immediate Access ONE will include any required books, course packets, lab manuals and homework platforms like Connect, MyLab, Advantage, PackBack, etc.

 283.
“This is really Immediate Access 2.0,” said Associate Provost for Academic Programs Ann Marie VanDerZanden at the Faculty Senate meeting in December. “It would use a flat-rate fee for every student that is significantly less expensive than if they were to buy each of those books and course materials individually. It is a policy that still is under review and discussion.”

 284.
On the first day of classes every semester, students can access and start using the required course materials by logging into their Canvas account and clicking their class’ Canvas course and then Immediate Access.

 285.
The ISU Book Store states that Immediate Access ONE has “unmatched student benefits. These include full transparency with no hidden charges, permitting the same cost for all undergraduate students regardless of how many books their course load requires or the price.”

 286.
According to Inside Iowa State, “The Book Store has provided immediate access materials since 2012, allowing students to receive access to digital-only required course materials on the first day of class at a lower cost. The effort has saved Iowa State students a total of $19 million, including more than $2.6 million this academic year.”

 287.
Immediate Access ONE is a digital-first course materials program. Digital-first means all textbooks with a digital match will be delivered digitally through Canvas.

 288.
“Overall, both faculty and students need to be more informed about Immediate Access ONE. Faculty should continue to pursue OER [open educational resources] and be frugal when adopting textbooks and other course materials,” Wood said. “Students should seriously look at their textbook expenses and opt out of Immediate Access ONE when appropriate.”

 289.
If the required course material is unavailable digitally or the professor requests a print copy, a print copy will be provided. Required print materials are available for pickup at the ISU Book Store.

 290.
Immediate Access ONE does not include physical materials such as lab coats, goggles, art supplies or lab supplies. These can be purchased at the ISU Book Store if needed.

 291.
If students drop or add courses to their schedule, digital items will be automatically activated or deactivated in their Canvas account after approximately 24 hours. Print textbooks will need to be returned to the ISU Book Store to avoid being charged a replacement fee.

 292.
“Students’ success and retention are very important, so I know we work hard to get students here, but we all need to work harder to retain students so if they can start off day one and not have this hurdle of not having their textbooks and get on the same level as everyone else,” said Rita Phillips, the director of the ISU Book Store. “The worst thing a student can do is start school and not end—with all that student debt. We want them to get here and stay here.”

 323.

The nuclear engineering bachelor’s, master’s and later minor were eliminated due to declining interest and dwindling job opportunities, as previously reported by the Daily.

 324.
The nuclear engineering program was initiated at Iowa State in the 1950s, and after years of offering programming, the program was shut down.

 325.
“They’re not building any more plants and they are downsizing others … it’s a tough market,” an Iowa State professor said in 1996.

 326.
In 1996, the university announced one of its nuclear reactors would be closing, the Daily previously reported. The reactor’s closing signified a trend that nuclear power was not taking off at the rate that nuclear advocates hoped.

 327.
The 1996 Daily interview with Scott Wendt, former reactor manager of the reactor on campus, shared a similar sentiment from the nuclear community.

 328.
“We think nuclear’s a viable option and will make a comeback. But of course, a lot of us have been thinking this for a long time, and it hasn’t happened yet,” Wendt said.

 329.
However, plant building could be on the comeback if the economics are proven, according to Brendan Ward, an Iowa State alumnus and a nuclear thermal hydraulics engineer for General Electric.

 330.
“I think that sentiment is nice, but as has been the case for a very long time, it comes down to the economics,” Ward said. “And I think that needs to change before we start seeing plants being built like they were in the 70s. I think we need to demonstrate that we can build a reactor affordably and do it repeatedly as well.”

 331.
Ward said the sentiment around nuclear may be changing for multiple reasons, including an “existential issue.”

 332.
“The idea that nuclear power as a carbon-free source of baseload electricity needed to play a role in the energy makeup is becoming more well understood and more accepted by the general public,“ Ward said.

 333.
The environmental impact of producing energy has some companies and governments looking for other sources.

 334.
“The environmentalists that were against nuclear for so long are coming around to the idea that like, ‘Hey, maybe this isn’t actually something that we want to be against. Maybe there’s something to this to better protect the environment. Maybe nuclear actually does have some merits that we just sort of discounted before out of sort of sensationalism,’” Ward said.

 335.
John Mobley, a graduate student, said in the interest of energy security and environmental concerns, the U.S. should pursue more nuclear options.

 336.

 337.
“Nuclear energy and the powerful applications for nuclear technology in general are, I would say, so underutilized within the U.S.,” Mobley said.

 338.
Ward said governmental support is increasing and the issue has become less partisan.

 339.
“There’s people in government and the Department of Energy or respective agencies that are looking at the energy makeup and saying we can’t get to our 2050 targets without replacing what we have already with nuclear,” Ward said.

 340.
There have been recent indications that nuclear energy could be making a comeback, like the Palisades plan in Michigan, which could be restarted with a $1.5 billion loan.

 341.
In December 2023, 22 nations committed to triple production of nuclear energy to combat climate change by 2050. Those countries include the U.S., Japan, France and Canada.

 342.
Overcoming sentiment

 343.
Overcoming a negative sentiment surrounding nuclear energy, like in Fukushima, contributed to a stall in nuclear energy production, according to Ward.

 344.
Mirka Deza, associate teaching professor in mechanical engineering and adviser of the American Nuclear Society Student Section at Iowa State, said overcoming a negative public sentiment is, in part, because of media coverage during disasters such as Fukushima.

 345.
“Fukushima, that was part of bringing back the fear of ‘Nuclear is bad. If there’s an accident, they’re not going to be able to control it,’” Deza said. “There is this bias or this distrust for nuclear energy, and I think that’s where most of it comes from, from the way that the accidents happen. They were not properly explained … or it was exaggerated for the news.”

 346.
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, nuclear power is the most reliable energy source, and Statista ranks nuclear and solar at the bottom of energy sources for the rate of deaths per thousand terawatt hour.

 347.
“You can be told many times over by experts and by anecdotal evidence; you can look at data that shows that driving is more dangerous than flying, and it doesn’t matter,” Ward said. “There are still people that don’t want to fly a plane, right? There’s a fear.”

 348.
Mobley said nuclear disasters like Three Mile Island or instances like the film “Oppenheimer,” paired with a lack of understanding of how nuclear power production works, can result in people who are scared of nuclear energy.

 350.
Seminar and sentiment

 351.
Mobley, who has a bachelor’s in physics and applied mathematics and earned a nuclear engineering minor from Iowa State, led an honors seminar called “Demystifying the Term ‘Nuclear’.”

 352.
The seminar aimed to provide a cross-disciplinary view of the nuclear field and an understanding of Iowa State’s nuclear history. A product of the seminar was a survey of the 17 students who took a seminar responding to questions relating to nuclear energy and engineering. Mobley taught the honors seminar in fall 2023.

 355.
Overcoming negative thoughts about nuclear energy through education was tracked with data from Mobley’s seminar, indicating students who learned more about nuclear had more positive sentiments once becoming more familiar.

 356.
“The Simpsons, Homer worked at a nuclear power plant, and there was always depictions of, you know, just being clumsy and messing around with uranium and mutated fish and all this stuff—and the glowing barrels of green goo. But none of that is accurate,” Mobley said. “The field is so regulated, and none of that would be able to happen.”

 359.
Deza said eliminating the fear people may have, which often results in an unawareness of the topic, has created a barrier for a more widespread use of nuclear energy.

 360.
“Any time you have the misconception, go back to the source. Where did I get that information from? Is that real? Research and talk to people and experts in the field,” Deza said.

 361.
Mobley said taking an approach to educating the students in a way that boosted comprehension, rather than skipping to the disasters, was beneficial to improving sentiment about nuclear energy.

 362.
“The main thing going through it myself and then teaching is that people usually skip a couple of steps that they need to go through,” Mobley said. “So we talked about the Manhattan Project; we talk about Chernobyl, but there’s a huge gap in between. They’re talking about the science and how do these things actually work and understanding why did Chernobyl happen? Why did Fukushima happen? And understanding that.”

 363.
Iowa State history

 364.
Iowa State was home to a direct chemical research and development program in 1942. The program was called the Ames Project, which operated alongside the Manhattan Project’s physics program.

 365.
The Ames Project resulted in a process to produce pure uranium and produced over 2 million pounds of uranium during the war.

 366.
The Ames Laboratory was established in 1947 as a result of the Ames Project’s work in the Manhattan Project.

 367.
“It is not an exaggeration to state that without the achievements of the Ames Laboratory on the Iowa State campus in the years 1942–45, World War II could have been considerably lengthened, with significant further loss of human life,” according to ACS.org.

 368.
More recent remnants of the history of nuclear engineering at Iowa State include the loss of degree programs, including a minor in nuclear engineering in 2019, a bachelor’s degree in 1993 and a master’s in 1997.

 369.
The Ames Laboratory Research Reactor was removed in 1977, and a nuclear reactor next to Sweeney Hall was built in 1959 and operated until May 1998, according to Iowa State News Service.

 370.
It was announced in 2017 that the building itself would be destroyed to make room for the Student Innovation Center.

 371.
Although Iowa State has discontinued its nuclear programs, the American Nuclear Society Student Section at Iowa State meets regularly. Mobley also led a group of students to the 2024 American Nuclear Society Student Conference at Penn State, where he presented on nuclear technology in society and education and moderated a panel on nuclear advocacy and policy.

 451.

Iowa State hosts new Big 12 opponent UCF for its final homestand of the season over the weekend in Ames, Iowa.

 452.
The Cyclones earned a hard-fought 9-8 win in Des Moines, Iowa, on Wednesday against in-state rival Drake following the strong pitching from Jaiden Ralston to get a third save of the season.

 453.
Iowa State opened the game with three straight doubles from Milaysia Ochoa, Angelina Allen and Alesia Ranches, driving in two runners. Tatum Johnson followed an Ashley Minor walk with another double. Minor scored on a wild pitch, and Johnson scored on a groundout, resulting in a 5-0 lead after the first inning.

 454.
The Bulldogs responded with a big inning of their own, hitting four home runs in the fourth inning against Cyclone freshman Aziza Rodriguez. Following the barrage of home runs, the Bulldogs led 8-5.

 455.
Carli Spelhaug tied it up in the fifth with a three-run home run, and Ochoa scored on a passed ball in the sixth. Ralston struck out the side in the sixth and escaped the seventh with two runners left on base, giving Iowa State a 9-8 win.

 456.
The win improved the Cyclones’ record to 19-28 and gave them their fifth away win of the season.

 457.
The Cyclones have played the Golden Knights five times, coming away with one win. The most recent matchup between the two was at the Louisville Slugger Invitational in Fullerton, California, in 2022, where UCF won 7-5.

 458.
The Golden Knights have a 28-21 record but are on a three-game losing streak following a difficult series against No. 2 Oklahoma. UCF is sixth in the Big 12 with a 10-14 conference record, right behind Baylor and Kansas, who both have an 11-13 conference record.

 459.
Jada Cody, in a fifth year at UCF, leads the way with 52 hits and 86 total bases. Cody has a .338 average and has used experience to an advantage, leading the Golden Knights with 20 extra-base hits, five of which were home runs.

 460.
Senior pitcher Sarah Willis has been dominant for UCF all year, striking out 92 batters in 24 appearances. The 92 strikeouts rank sixth in the Big 12.

 461.
The entire pitching staff for UCF has found success this year, boasting a 3.23 combined ERA across the seven pitchers.

 462.
For Iowa State, Ochoa hopes to keep the hitting going from a strong 2-4 performance against Drake. Additionally, pitching will need to hold up like it did in the first three innings against the Bulldogs.

 463.
The first pitch of the Iowa State-UCF series will be at 4 p.m. Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex in Ames, Iowa.

 486.
“You should not be in higher education and be worrying about where your next meal is coming from. That’s ridiculous,” said Hursh, a sophomore in economics.

 487.
On the day of inauguration, April 9, an executive order was signed to establish a food insecurity task force.

 488.
“That was one of our main platform points; that’s something that we said we’re absolutely going to get done on day one,” Hursh said.

 489.
Through conversations with Students Helping Our Peers (SHOP), National Residence Hall Honorary President Nicolas Stelter has brought a proposal to the table that would bring a food pantry to the Wallace-Wilson residence halls (Towers).

 490.
“This proposal outlines a comprehensive plan that integrates institutional support, staffing strategies and organizational structures to ensure the sustained operation of the food pantry,” Hursh read from the proposal.

 491.
Hursh said this proposal is still in the early stages, and there are many steps to the process before it would open.

 492.
“This is not something that you can just snap your fingers and you’re going to be able to get a spot,” Hursh said. “You have to get a spot allocated for you. Where are you going to put this pantry at? How are you going to stock it? And then you have to work really closely with SHOP.”

 493.
While the potential food pantry at Towers is currently being looked at, Margrett said more analysis will be done to find other places on campus where food insecurity is prevalent.

 494.
“We know that broadly there is this problem, but this isn’t specific to just Towers. It’s what else can we do?” said Margrett, a sophomore in business economics. “Kind of the first step is A, looking at Towers, because we know that’s a specific need. We’ve identified it. [Next is] identifying where else there’s a need.”

 495.
Mindi Heeren, who will be chairing the task force according to Hursh, is the nonprofit coordinator for Student Government. Adam Herrington, director of health and wellness for Student Government, will serve as the vice chair.

 496.
At-large members are appointed by the president, with multiple members currently appointed.

 497.
Students interested in joining or sharing ideas with the task force can reach out to Hursh or Margrett to discuss through their emails hursh@iastate.edu and quinnmar@iastate.edu.
