Korean and U.S. naval engineers repaired and renovated the house of a war veteran on Tuesday, as the allies’ joint exercise is set to end Friday.According to the ROK Navy’s First Fleet, the two allies have been engaged in humanitarian assistance and disaster response (HA/DR) exercises in Yangyang County, Gangwon Province, since April 22.The regular exercise is aimed at improving the crisis-response capabilities and disaster relief operation of the Korean and U.S. navies’ engineering units and preparing for non-military threats such as natural disasters.
The HA team visited the house of a late war veteran and repaired and renovated his house, now owned by his 88-year-old widow. They reinforced the ceiling and installed new insulation and finishing materials. In addition, they installed new wallpaper and linoleum and changed lights.”It’s been eight years since my husband died, but I’m grateful for military personnel who came to my house and offered help. I’m proud of my husband,” said Yoon Choon-ae, widow of Lee Jin-hyuk, who served in the 1950–53 Korean War with the Army’s 30th Field Artillery Battalion of the Ninth Division.The DR team stabilized the slope near the Navy’s 108th Squadron unit and built a new drainage ditch system for a civilian road. Lee Jae-myung, chairman of the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), found common ground on the necessity of medical reform during their meeting, the government is expected to take emboldened steps forward with its planned increase in medical school admissions.The opposition leader’s de facto endorsement is expected to boost the Yoon administration’s medical reform plan, indicating that the ongoing impasse with striking doctors over the medical school admissions quota hike could worsen.Yoon and Lee held their first-ever official meeting, Monday, which continued for over two hours. Lim Hyun-taek, who is set to assume office as the new president of the Korean Medical Association (KMA), Wednesday, said that Monday’s meeting only showed that both the president and the DPK leader do not properly understand the country’s medical system.”Our stance remains unchanged. We will begin discussions from square one only if the government scraps the expansion of medical school admissions and essential health care package policy,” Lim was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency, Tuesday.The government’s medical reform plan, which includes a hike in medical student admission quotas by up to 2,000 slots from next year, has triggered vehement opposition from doctors’ associations.Since late February, over 90 percent of the nation’s 13,000 trainee doctors have launched a strike in the form of a mass resignation movement, with medical professors working in general hospitals now following suit by taking leave weekly.On Tuesday, some medical professors at major hospitals in Seoul, including Severance Hospital, Seoul National University Hospital and hospitals affiliated with Korea University, suspended their work for a day, with exceptions made for treating emergency room patients and those requiring critical care.The move comes after a recent decision by a group of medical professors to suspend treating patients at least once a week, complaining that they are bearing the brunt of filling the medical void left by the trainee doctors’ strike.Although the Ministry of Health and Welfare said Tuesday’s collective action by medical professors did not immediately lead to severe health care disruptions, patients felt otherwise.”Neither the government nor the doctors seem to prioritize the well-being of patients, who are being held hostage in their prolonged standoff. Actor Park Sung-hoon had his global breakout, playing the insufferable antagonist Jeon Jae-jun in Netflix’s 2022 hit series “The Glory.” Fast-forward a couple of years, and the actor is flaunting another irresistible performance as a villain, Yoon Eun-seong, in tvN’s massive hit series “Queen of Tears.” “During my career, I’ve often had cases where people need to reference the roles I’ve played to explain me. But now, when they say Jeon Jae-jun, they recognize me right away, which felt good because I now have a nickname that people can put to a face,” the actor told The Korea Times during an interview held at his agency, BH Entertainment, in southern Seoul’s Gangnam District, Monday.“With ‘Queen of Tears,’ a lot of people started to call me Eun-seong. And it motivated me to work harder with different projects, hoping one day I’ll be remembered as Park Sung-hoon rather than Jeon Jae-jun and Yoon Eun-seong.”The rom-com series, which aired its finale Sunday with the network’s highest viewership rating in history at 24.9 percent, revolves around an estranged couple, Baek Hyun-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) and Hong Hae-in (Kim Ji-won), who are married for three years.Despite the fairytale love story of a normal country boy marrying a conglomerate heiress(Queens Group), Baek decides to divorce his egotistical and demanding wife. But his divorce plan takes a turn when Hong is diagnosed with cancer, leading him to meet a different side of Hong, finding hope in rekindling their marriage.Park plays Hong’s college friend, who comes back into her life with a devious plan to take over the company secretly with his birth mother who has been the mistress of the group’s president for decades. His character meets a tragic death after showing a twisted love for Hong.
The actor noted that he built the character focusing on his unyielding love for Hong.“I’ve discussed a few things with the series’ writer, Park Ji-eun, as I prepared for my roles, but she emphasized his love for Hong. Yoon always treats people with a facade, but his feelings for Hong were true and desperate,” he said, adding he hoped viewers feel sympathy towards the character’s end.“He doesn’t know how to be loved and to love so I feel his way of showing love came out twisted. Although Yoon was a villain, he had such dedicated love, in his opinion, towards Hong, so I think the ending felt a bit sorrowful and bitter,” he said. “(The series) shows his backstory which sort of explains why Yoon became such a person. So I also wished his ending would draw some sympathy.” As Yoon plays a great obstacle to Hong and Baek’s love story, the actor shared that he has received a lot of harsh comments from the series’ fans.“I’m actually not bothered or hurt by those direct messages (on social media) … Because they root for Hong and Baek, they have such feelings toward (my character). That’s how much they love and put interest in our series so I enjoy reading the comments,” he said.“Now I think perspectives have changed. Previously, people used to see the character as the actor’s real personality, but now, more people see it separately. So I try to think of it as compliments that I portrayed my character convincingly.”Park is set for another tent-pole project, “Squid Game” season 2, which is scheduled to premiere later this year. He hopes to be associated with the new character’s name from the series in the second half of the year.“(The series) put together such skilled actors, which made it more fun to work on set, watching their performances and co-acting with them. So I’ve had such a great time … Standing on the set and filming in that tracksuit felt so enthralling,” he said.“I’ve been called Jae-jun then Eun-seoung. Controversy is growing over a senior Korean foreign ministry official’s idea of allowing Korean and Japanese nationals to visit each other’s countries without passports as part of efforts to promote bilateral exchanges.The foreign ministry clarified that this was a personal suggestion by the official and emphasized that there are no ongoing discussions between Seoul and Tokyo on this matter. However, the main opposition Democratic Party of Korea (DPK) has already raised concerns about the idea, insisting that Japan should first issue proper apologies regarding historical disputes between the two countries.During a press conference with reporters on April 26, the senior official said the relations between Korea and Japan have dramatically improved recently, and the upcoming 60th anniversary of the two countries’ diplomatic ties next year will be a good opportunity to upgrade their ties further.“With the two countries having such good relations, requiring passports for travelers visiting each other seems like nonsense,” the official said, citing some European nations allowing passport-free travel between each other.“If passport-free travel is impossible, we can at least simplify the immigration process. This idea is gaining favorable responses within Japan as well.”
The official’s idea is equivalent to the European Union’s Schengen Agreement, which abolished border checks at the signatory countries’ common borders. After being signed in 1985, now 29 nations comprise the Schengen Area, guaranteeing free movement to EU citizens, non-EU nationals living in the EU and those visiting the EU as tourists.Business lobby groups, including the Federation of Korean Industries, have for years been proposing passport- or visa-free travel between Seoul and Tokyo to promote exchanges between the two countries. However, this has not been realized as the two countries’ diplomatic relations remained at their lowest ebb until recent years.Last year, Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida dramatically improved bilateral relations through a series of summits, after Seoul’s announcement that it would compensate the South Korean victims of Japan’s wartime forced labor on its own without involving Japanese firms, though Japan did not offer proper apologies for the forced labor issue.In doing so, the exchanges between the two countries also improved. Traffic congestion is expected in Seoul on Wednesday due to the closure of some roads for large-scale rallies marking May Day.According to the police, Tuesday, the two biggest labor unions — the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) and the Federation of Korean Trade Unions (FKTU) — plan to stage their respective rallies.The KCTU will hold a protest with 25,000 participants near Sejong-daero in central Seoul, starting at 2 p.m., while the FKTU-organized rally will be held in Yeouido, with 7,000 attendees expected.The KCTU will commence a preliminary competition at noon and hold its main event at 2 p.m. between Dongwha Duty Free Shop and Sungnyemun and after that, they will march toward the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office in Jung District and Samgakji Station in Yongsan District until 5 p.m.The FKTU’s rally is scheduled for 1 p.m. through 3:30 p.m., but it does not plan to hold a march.
Police will implement a variable lane between the Sejong-daero intersection and Deoksu Palace, where rallies are expected, to ensure two-way traffic flow. About 200 police officers will be deployed to the venue and march sections to manage variable lanes and traffic detours.Additional rallies and marches by other groups are also scheduled in Tongil-ro and Eulji-ro in central Seoul, likely causing severe vehicle congestion in the city.The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency advises that people use public transportation, such as the subway, to avoid the expected congestion.Meanwhile, other events marking May Day will be held not only in Seoul but also in 15 major cities nationwide, including Busan and Daegu.The National Police Agency (NPA) conducted a situation inspection meeting, chaired by NPA Commissioner Yoon Hee-keun, on Monday to strategize responses to the May Day rallies following the reported 90,000-person rallies across the country on Wednesday.Police plan to swiftly disperse illegal rallies, such as those occupying entire roads outside the reported scope, and will respond strictly to any interference with public <a href="https://www.sportstotozone.com/">스포츠토토존 </a> affairs.
