The Dallas Mavericks secured a dramatic 117-116 victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 2 of the 2023-2024 NBA Playoffs at American Airlines Arena in Dallas, Texas, on Monday night.
With the win, Dallas took a 4-2 series lead and advanced to the Conference Finals.
It’s a huge win for Dallas. After hovering just outside of the play-in tournament at the start of the season, the Mavs turned things around at the trade deadline with big-name acquisitions like PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford. Finney-Smith was a key part of Dallas’ defense, doing the dirty work at the forward spot. Dallas signed Grant Williams in free agency to fill the void left by Phinney-Smith, but it was a failure.
Washington has filled in 100% of Finney-Smith’s shoes, with Derrick Jones Jr. helping out.
Washington and Jones Jr. both have defensive strengths. Jones, in particular, is more of a perimeter defender.
Jones Jr. has been known for his dunks off of huge jumps since his days with the <a href="https://tapas.io/edwardsrailcar" title="">Miami Heat</a>, but it’s clear from watching him play that his strength is defense.
He specializes in using his overwhelming athleticism to wear down opposing defenders. After leaving Miami, he played for the Portland Trailblazers and Chicago Bulls before joining Dallas this season.
And in Dallas, he has finally come into full bloom. Jones Jr. averaged 8.6 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 34% shooting from three-point range this season. It was the best season of his career in terms of scoring and three-point percentage.
The defense that Dallas was counting on was a non-factor. Jones Jr. played the role of taking the defensive load off of Irving and Doncic perfectly.
His play was even better in the playoffs. In 11 playoff games, Jones is averaging 9.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game, which is even better than his regular season numbers. His presence is even more important in the playoffs, where defense is key.
For Dallas, acquiring Jones Jr. a season ago was a stroke of genius.
Interestingly, Jones’ agent was heavily involved in his move to Dallas. As a free agent last summer, Jones Jr. had two offers. One was from the <a href="https://www.sitejabber.com/users/edwardsr10" title="">Boston Celtics</a>, and the other was from Dallas.
He was torn between the two offers, but his agent pushed him to go to Dallas. The reason was playing time. Boston has an established starting frontcourt with Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Dallas, on the other hand, doesn’t have a set starting lineup outside of Doncic and Irving.
The decision turned out to be a win-win for both Dallas and Jones Jr. himself. The agent’s involvement was a positive.
After signing a one-year deal last summer, Jones Jr. will become a free agent after this season. The Dallas Mavericks won 117–116 against the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 6 of the second round of the 2023-2024 NBA Playoffs at American Airlines Center in Dallas on Monday night.
The Donovan duo is on a roll. They swept top-seeded Oklahoma City in the second round to advance to the conference finals.
In Game 6, Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving were the stars of the show. Doncic led the way with a 29-point triple-double, while <a href="https://www.sportstotozone.com/" title="">스포츠토토</a> Irving (22 points) hit a key tough shot in the fourth quarter.

ESPN harshly criticized Dallas for the Irving trade, giving them a D grade. Brooklyn, on the other hand, received a B+ in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, and a draft pick.
So far, the “D” grade for Irving appears to be off by a significant margin. At this point, it’s hard to characterize Dallas’ acquisition of Irving as a failure.
Despite missing the playoffs in his first season with the team, Irving is playing “happy basketball” in his re-signed season. This is the first time Irving’s team has reached the <a href="https://www.commentreparer.com/membres/112395/sportsttotozone0" title="">Conference Finals</a> since the 2017-2018 season, when he was with Boston. Irving missed the playoffs then due to injury.
Irving and Doncic are the most intimidating backcourt duo in the playoffs right now. After Game 6, Irving and Doncic held a press conference together and both smiled when the subject of their trade grade of D came up. Irving joked, “I became the worst player in the All-Star game.”
“We don’t care (about that rating),” Doncic replied with a laugh. We love playing with each other and we love playing with this team. We don’t really care what other people say.”
In Dallas, Irving is far from a troublemaker. Even after the game, he shared a deep hug with Doncic, showing his camaraderie. The outbursts and locker room issues that everyone feared have not happened in Dallas.
“Kyrie Irving just helped me mature a lot, and he made me realize that I can look at the game in a different way,” Doncic said. It’s amazing to play with a guy like him on the court, he’s been a great leader, not only for me but for us,” Doncic said.
Irving, in turn, said, “Next to me, <a href="https://tapas.io/sportsttotozone0" title="">(Luka) Doncic</a> pushed me to continue to build our game and continue to develop as a young leader. I came to Dallas and had to do a lot of things and they embraced me with open arms. Doncic is like a big teddy bear who loves to compete. You can’t sit still and admire his talent. I enjoy watching him become a father, and I enjoy watching him develop as a person. He’s a good person and a good young man,” he praised his partner.
On the sidelines for Game 6 was one of Dallas’ last championship-winning players, Doug Nowitzki. With the Donovan duo, Dallas is back in the championship hunt after 13 years. The Kia Tigers of the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) have completed a sweep of the NC Dinos thanks to Hwang Dong-ha’s five-inning complete game shutout.
The Tigers defeated the NC Dinos 7-2 in the regular season finale of the 2024 Shinhan SOL Bank KBO League at Changwon NC Park on April 18. With the win, Kia completed a three-game winning streak and a winning series to improve to 28-16-1 on the season.
Starting pitcher Hwang Dong-ha led the team with a strong performance. Hwang threw 98 pitches over five innings, allowing five hits (one home run), one walk, four strikeouts and two runs on five hits with four strikeouts to earn his first career win. He used 43 fastballs, 35 sliders, 15 forks, and five curveballs, including a fastball that topped out at 146 mph, to cook the NC bats and earn an emotional debut win.
