63.
Gatekeepers News reports that the move is aimed at boosting the government’s capacity to revamp the mining sector and fulfill its obligations of providing an enabling environment for mining operations while generating more revenue.

 64.
Speaking during a consultative meeting with stakeholders in Abuja, the Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake emphasized the need for the review and solicited the support of stakeholders for the impending increase in fees.

 65.
He also disclosed that the government is implementing new mining regulations to protect legitimate miners and combat illegal mining.

 66.
Alake said, “For us to continue to ensure that we secure the mining environment and keep putting in place measures that will ease the operational difficulties and challenges that confront miners, we need to review the rates of mining licenses and other sundry fees.

 67.
“We felt that we couldn’t just do this without letting you know because, invariably, you are the players in the industry.”

 68.
The Minister also noted that the government followed due process in the recent revocation of dormant mining licenses.

 69.
He pointed out that a 30-day restitution window still existed for operators that were affected.

 84.
The Minister also warned saboteurs of Nigeria’s power sector to stay away if lasting development is to be seen in the industry.

 85.
“Let me mention that we have started seeing improvements in our generation output. The output has increased from 4,200MW to 4,800MW in the past few days.

 86.
“What we experienced in February and some parts of March was undesirable when we had shallow generations,” he said.

 100.

The Lagos State government announced that it generated a total of N300m from Land Use Charge within the first four months of the year.

 101.
Gatekeepers News reports that the Lagos State Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget, Ope George disclosed this during a presentation of the scorecard of the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, at the Ministerial Press Briefing held in Lagos to mark the first anniversary of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office.

 102.
The commissioner added that the amount generated within the first four months exceeded the projected revenue of N700m from Land Use Charge for 2024.

 103.
This indicates a promising trajectory for surpassing annual revenue projections. The statistics also show that Lagos State’s economy is still robust and contributes about 20% of the entire country’s gross domestic product.

 104.
He said, “Over the last couple of years, Lagos had faced numerous challenges, particularly when COVID-19 and #EndSARS struck. And so, we have had a lot of shocks within our system over the last couple of years and with everything going on around the world. We are currently riding the curve and we are coming out on a better side. You hear sometimes when they say Lagos is one of the largest economies in Africa and truly, it is not static. We will continue to move based on what is going on in the world.

 105.
“As we speak now, I believe that we are currently ranked seventh in terms of GDP in Africa. We contribute at least a minimum of over 20 per cent of Nigeria’s GDP and you will find that throughout review, during the first term of Mr Governor, we are moving in the right direction.

 106.
“Our GDP has moved from about N27tn to N41tn, everything shows that our indices are climbing in the right direction despite all the shocks and all the problems we have witnessed in the past.”

 107.
On the state’s N2.267tn budget for 2024, the commissioner posited that the budget was inadequate to meet the infrastructural needs of the state.

 108.
He revealed that the financial needs of government agencies were more than N4tn.

 109.
The commissioner explained, “What this implies is that Lagos can have a budget size of N4tn but going by the available indices at the moment, such projection can not be made until there are available means and revenue sources that can conveniently fund such budget size.”

 110.
According to George, the budget performance of the state in 2023 was 87 per cent.

 111.
George noted that the budget was focused on the completion of ongoing projects, such as the Blue and Red Line Rail System, Stadia, Lekki-Epe Road, New Massey Children Hospital, Opebi-Mende Link Bridge, etc.

 112.
“It is also geared towards ensuring that every endeavour, investment, partnership, and policy translates effectively into tangible positive outcomes in the lives of Lagos residents and its environs,” he said.

 150.
Gatekeepers News has obtained the official dollar to the naira exchange rate in Nigeria today, including the Bureau De Change (BDC) rate and CBN rates.

 151.
What Is The Official Exchange Rate For Dollar To Naira Today?

 152.
The exchange rate between the Naira and the US dollar according to the data released on the FMDQ Security Exchange, the official forex trading portal showed that the Naira opened at ₦1398.86 per $1 on Tuesday, April 30, and closed at ₦1402.67 per $1 on Thursday, May 02, 2024.

 153.
However, the Naira is trading as high as ₦1,360 per Dollar at the black market even though the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) announced the unification of all segments of the foreign exchange market.

 154.
The apex bank, had in a circular on Wednesday 14th June 2023, said all FX windows were now collapsed into the investors & exporters (I&E) window.

 155.
The statement read, “Abolishment of segmentation. All segments are now collapsed into the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window. Applications for medicals, school fees, BTA/PTA, and SMEs would continue to be processed through deposit money banks.

 156.
“Re-introduction of the “Willing Buyer, Willing Seller” model at the I&E Window. Operations in this window shall be guided by the extant circular on the establishment of the window, dated 21 April 2017, and referenced FM/DIR/CIR/GEN/08/007. All eligible transactions are permitted to access foreign exchange at this window.

 157.
“The operational rate for all government-related transactions shall be the weighted average rate of the preceding day’s executed transactions at the I&E window, calculated to two (2) decimal places.

 158.
“Proscription of trading limits on oversold FX positions with permission to hedge short positions with OTC futures. Limits on overbought positions shall be zero.

 159.
“Re-introduction of order-based two-way quotes, with bid-ask spread of N1. All transactions shall be cleared by a Central Counter Party (CCP).

 160.
“Reintroduction of Order Book to ensure transparency of orders and seamless execution of trades.

 161.
“The operational hours of trades shall be from 9 a.m to 4 p.m, Nigeria time.”

 162.
The apex noted that further guidance on the operational changes would be communicated to authorized dealers and the general public in due course.

 163.
The changes to operations in the country’s FX market imply that Nigeria has eased its control of the naira, allowing the local currency to float freely.

 164.
Meanwhile, a free-floating exchange rate occurs when a government allows the exchange rate to be determined purely by market forces and there is no attempt to ask the central bank to influence the external value of the exchange rate.

 424.

United Kingdom has claimed success in reducing the number of dependants in the country by 80%.

 425.
Gatekeepers News reports that the announcement was made by Rishi Sunak, UK Prime Minister on social media on Wednesday. He stated that this significant fall in dependents is evidence that the changes made to the country’s visa system are working.

 426.
“The number of students bringing family members and dependants to the UK was too high. This wasn’t fair.

 427.
“Our changes are working—student dependant numbers are now down by 80 per cent,” he wrote.

 428.
Earlier this year, the UK government had called for a reduction in the number of dependents, such as spouses and children, of overseas students coming to the country.

 429.
According to an update issued by the Home Office, during the period of January to March this year, dependents have drastically fallen by almost 80%, amid over 26,000 fewer student visa applications made.

 430.
Under the new rules, most international students, except those on research courses, cannot bring their family members along and also cannot switch their visas before completing their course.

 431.
The government claims that this measure has prevented misuse of the student visa as a “backdoor” to work in the UK. The Home Office has been cracking down on institutions “selling immigration not education”.

 445.
Gatekeepers News reports that one of the key announcements was the appointment of Fatuma Ahmed as the first female commander in the Kenyan Air Force.

 446.
Ahmed first rose to prominence in August 2015 when she became the first woman to be promoted to the rank of brigadier in the Kenyan military, which is predominantly male.

 447.
Ahmed joined the armed forces in 1983, accidentally stumbling upon a recruitment exercise while returning home from secondary school.

 448.
She subsequently became an officer cadet the following year. Ahmed is also the first female soldier to attain the rank of major general, having been promoted from brigadier and appointed assistant chief of the defense forces in charge of personnel and logistics.

 449.
Ahmed’s appointment comes after John Omenda was promoted to vice chief of the defense forces and the rank of lieutenant general.

 450.
Additionally, Charles Kahariri has been appointed as the nation’s new defense chief. Kahariri was previously the deputy of his predecessor who was about to mark 40 years of military service before his untimely death.
