Then came word that barn cats — half of them on one farm — had died suddenly.

 556.
Within days, the Amarillo veterinarian was hearing about sick cows with unusual symptoms: high fevers, reluctance to eat and much less milk. Tests for typical illnesses came back negative.

 557.
Petersen, who monitors more than 40,000 cattle on a dozen farms in the Texas Panhandle, collected samples from cats and cows and sent them to Dr. Drew Magstadt, a friend from college who now works at the veterinary diagnostic laboratory at Iowa State University.

 558.
The samples tested positive for a bird flu virus never before seen in cattle. It was the first proof that the bird flu, known as Type A H5N1, could infect cows. As of Wednesday, 36 U.S. herds had confirmed infections, according to the U.S. Agriculture Department.

 559.
“It was just a surprise,” recalled Petersen. “It was just a little bit of disbelief.”

 560.
At the same time, on almost every farm with sick animals, Petersen said she saw sick people, too.

 561.
“We were actively checking on humans,” Petersen said. “I had people who never missed work, miss work.”

 562.
So far, two people in the U.S. have been confirmed to be infected with H5N1, most recently a Texas dairy worker linked to the cattle outbreak, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. About two dozen people have been tested and about 100 people have been monitored since the virus appeared in cows, Dr. Demetre Daskalakis, a CDC respiratory diseases official, told reporters Wednesday.

 563.
Daskalakis said CDC has seen no unusual flu trends in areas with infected cows, but some experts wonder if anecdotal reports of sick workers mean more than one person caught the virus from the animals.

 564.
Petersen said some workers had symptoms consistent with flu: fever and body aches, stuffy nose or congestion. Some had conjunctivitis, the eye inflammation detected in the Texas dairy worker diagnosed with bird flu.

 565.
Dr. Gregory Gray, an infectious disease epidemiologist at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, has been taking samples from livestock and people on two Texas farms. On farms with confirmed cattle infections, there have also been reports of mild illnesses among the workers, he said.

 566.
His research has been difficult. Many workers are reluctant to be tested. That may be because they have limited access to health care or fear divulging private health information.

 567.
Without confirmation, no one knows if the sick workers were infected with the bird flu virus or something unrelated, Gray said.

 568.
“They seem to be linked in time and space, so one would say it’s biologically plausible,” said Gray.

 569.
Some of the workers who fell ill sought treatment and were offered oseltamivir, an antiviral drug sold under the brand name Tamiflu, Petersen said.

 570.
Some farm workers who were exposed to infected animals or people were offered the medication, CDC spokesman Jason McDonald said. State health officials are responsible for evaluating and providing treatment, according to federal guidelines.

 571.
Health officials in Texas provided Tamiflu to the person known to be infected with H5N1 and household members, plus two people on a second dairy farm who tested negative but were exposed to infected animals, said Chris Van Deusen, a spokesman for the Texas Department of State Health Services. He said he wasn’t sure if others had been offered the antiviral.

 572.
Farmers have been hesitant to allow health officials onto their land, said Dr. Kay Russo, a Colorado veterinarian who consulted about the outbreak with Petersen.

 573.
“This particular disease is looked at as a scarlet letter,” Russo said. “It has this stigma associated with it right now.”

 574.
Russo called for wider testing of cattle, people and milk.

 575.
“We do not know what we do not measure,” she said. “Unfortunately, the horse left the barn and took off a lot faster than we were able to mobilize.”

 576.
Gray worries that a recent federal order requiring testing of all lactating dairy cows moving between states could hinder cooperation even further. All labs that conduct tests must report positive results to the Agriculture Department. But many farmers may simply decide against testing, hoping to outlast the outbreak, he said.

 577.
The reluctance of workers and farmers to allow testing is “greatly hampering” understanding of how the virus spreads, how large the outbreak is now and how quickly it may grow, Gray said.

 578.
“It’s a negative, very negative, effect,” he said.

 579.
Petersen said she understands workers’ and farmers’ fears. She praised the farmers who had been willing to let her gather the first samples that confirmed the outbreak and reflected on what the results could mean.

 580.
“You immediately think about the cows, the people that care for them and the families that have these farms,” she said. “You’re thinking about the big picture, long term. Your mind starts to go down that entire path of concern.”

 704.
The benefits of hormone therapy for the treatment of menopause symptoms outweigh the risks. That’s the conclusion of a new study published in the medical journal JAMA.

 705.
“Among women below the age of 60, we found hormone therapy has low risk of adverse events and [is] safe for treating bothersome hot flashes, night sweats and other menopausal symptoms, ” says study author Dr. JoAnn Manson, chief of preventive medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. This is a departure from the advice many women have been given in the past.

 706.
The new analysis is based on two decades of follow-up data from the Women’s Health Initiative study, which followed thousands of women taking hormone replacement therapy. The study was halted after it was found that women taking Prempro, which is a combination of estrogen and progestin, had higher risks of breast cancer and stroke.

 717.
“The findings were surprising,” Manson says, pointing out that the reason the randomized trial was conducted was because scientists were trying to determine if hormone therapy decreased the risk of heart disease and other conditions.

 718.
After the initial findings came out, many women abruptly stopped the therapy. Prescriptions plummeted, and many healthcare providers still hesitate to recommend hormone therapy. But menopause experts say it’s time to reconsider hormone therapy, because there’s a lot known now that wasn’t known two decades ago.

 719.
Most significantly, there are now different types of hormones — delivered at lower doses — that are shown to be safer.

 720.
“Women should know that hormone therapy is safe and beneficial,” says Dr. Lauren Streicher, a clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

 721.
Looking back, Dr. Streicher says, it’s clear the Women’s Health Initiative study was flawed and that some of the risks that were identified were linked to the type of hormones that women were given.

 722.
“We learned what not to do,” Streicher says. The type of progestin used, known as medroxyprogesterone acetate, was “highly problematic,” she says. This was likely responsible for the increase in breast cancer seen among women in the study. “So we don’t prescribe that anymore,” Streicher says.

 723.

 724.

 725.
Increasingly, other types of hormones are used, such as micronized progesterone which does not increase the risk of breast cancer, ” Streicher says. Micronized progesterone is a bioidentical hormone that has a molecular structure identical to the progesterone produced by womens’ ovaries, and tends to have fewer side effects.

 726.
Another problem with the study was the age of the women enrolled. Most of the women were over the age of 60, Streicher says .” And we know that there is a window of opportunity when it is the safest to start hormone therapy and that you get the most benefit.” That window is typically between ages 50 and 60, she says.

 735.
Another risk identified in the Women’s Health Initiative study, was an increased incidence of pulmonary embolism among women taking hormones. A pulmonary embolism is a blood clot that blocks blood flow to the lungs.

 736.
Since women in the study were taking estrogen orally, by pill, this may have increased their risk, Streicher says. A better option for people at risk of clots is to take estrogen through the skin, via a patch, a cream or gel.

 737.
“The advantage of a transdermal estrogen is that it is not metabolized by the liver,” Streicher says. “And because it’s not metabolized by the liver, we don’t see that increase in blood clots.”

 738.
With a range of hormone therapies available now, Dr Streicher says there’s not a one-size fits all approach. “Hormone therapy is beneficial way beyond the benefits to just helping with hot flashes,” she says. Ongoing research points to protection against bone loss and heart disease, too.

 739.
Streicher says women should talk to their healthcare providers about what options may best suit their needs.

 771.

 772.
“I was born in Hong Kong, but my mom moved me and my brother to New York when I was four years old. Growing up here, I thought I wanted to be a cartoonist, but I got really into fashion and ended up going to FIT. Straight out of college, I was the PR manager at Archetype Showroom. I think I made something like $28,000 a year; I was a hostess at Bond Street trying to make ends meet at the same time. Immediately after that I dipped my toes into other brands, like Pamela Love and Kimberly Ovitz, and quickly realized that fashion was not my thing. I went on to be the production manager at Paper’s Extra Extra, one of the first experiential marketing agencies out there, and then later landed a production director role at The Gathery, where I helped scale events, from small intimate dinners to large-scale conferences like Sophia Amoruso’s Girlboss Rally. The events industry is tough though, and I suffered from burnout almost immediately. I had been DJing as a side hustle too. I’ve been lucky enough to DJ for some of the best-in-class brands like Valentino and Lamborghini, but at the time, I was exhausted. I got really into wellness and taking care of myself, and I started learning how to surf in Rockaway Beach. After that, I quit my job to open up my own pop-up surf shop called The Notion in the Rockaways. The surf industry was—and still is—so dominated by men, and I wanted to create a space for female surfers.

 773.
I moved to Los Angeles in 2019, but fast forward to March 2020, I went to Puerto Rico on a weekend long surf trip and got stuck there for three months because of COVID. The first month and a half was especially tricky because Puerto Rico was so strict. You couldn’t even walk on the beach. I called my friend and now co-founder Emily Doyle, who had experience in the beauty game, and said, ‘This is the time to build our dream company. We’re not going to have this time and space again.’ As a surfer, suncare was one of my personal pain points within the beauty industry. I refused to buy a sunscreen that was $50 for a 1.7 ounce bottle. But the drugstore brands marketed as clear would leave me with a white cast. It was very difficult finding a product that was affordable, innovative, clear on my skin, and easy to access. Enter: Dune Suncare, where we offer everything from face sunscreen to body SPF in varying formulas.

 774.

 775.
SKINCARE
I battled crazy acne as a teenager. It’s in my family DNA. I went on Accutane in my twenties—definitely did not get the info about how bad it is for you then—and it worked, though my hormones still break me out every once in a while. That means I’m constantly looking for skincare with non-comedogenic formulas. Ease is also important to me; I love two-in-one formulas.

 776.
In the morning, I use my Osea Ocean cleanser, followed up by the iS Clinical Pro-Heal serum. It’s a vitamin C serum, and it’s helped me so much. I’ll admit that I’m a skin picker and I love the sun, which means I’m the prime suspect for hyperpigmentation. I’ve recently started using the Topicals Faded. I’m hoping to see some changes with that, but I have to be honest, it doesn’t smell the best. I’m committed to it though; I know consistency is key. I finish off the morning with the Dune Mug Guard SPF 30.

 777.
Since I don’t wear too much makeup on the daily, I just use my Osea cleanser again at night. Then I either use the iS Clinical Active serum, which is really good for acne, or the Sunday Riley Good Genes. The Active serum feels a little cool and tingly when you put it on, which makes me feel like it’s working better, and the Good Genes has been incredible with my fine lines. I like the iS Clinical Active Peel Treatment System, too. And, like my mom taught me, I always wear eye cream. I like the iS Clinical Eye Complex, which I always apply with my ring finger. I love Colleen Rothchild’s Weightless moisturizer. It’s truly very light. And I love to roll my face with the ReVive contouring massage roller. It really helps accentuate my cheekbones.

 779.
I travel quite a lot, so my skin is always feeling dehydrated and dry. I lather on Summer Fridays’ Jet Lag mask on planes. I even use it on my hands, and I put it on top of my sunscreen. And I always have Lucas’ Papaw ointment on me. I use it all day long.

 780.
Post-surf, my body is so salty, so I use the Dune Lifeguard, our take on after-sun gels. It’s aloe-based and doubles as a moisturizer. But on a regular basis, instead of regular body lotion, I use our Dune Bod Guard because I live in LA and get a lot of sunlight. It’s SPF 30, really hydrating, and smells like the ocean. Osea’s Undaria algae body oil is really hydrating, too. It gives you a little glow.

 781.
I was 35 when I first got Botox. Kim Kardashian inspired me to start—just kidding. [Laughs] I go to Cienega Med Spa now. I like it for my crow’s feet, frown lines, and on my brows for a little lift. And I just got the TheraFace mask, so I can’t speak to it too much, but I’m excited to use it. It’s supposed to help with fine lines and wrinkles. It has both red and blue light, and it vibrates, which feels great.

 782.
I was given a gift card for The Things We Do recently. It’s a cute spa. I went in for their ‘complete peel’ and I had a five-day recovery period. The first day after, I was like, ‘My skin is too strong for this peel. Nothing is happening.’ But oh my God, on the second and third day, my skin was flaking off in pieces. Then I looked great. [Laughs] I normally go to Skin Laundry for resurfacing facials, which use a fractional laser. It hurts and you peel with it, too, but the glow is worth it.

 783.

 784.
MAKEUP
I like an easy-breezy makeup look, so I don’t use a lot of products on a daily basis, but if I have a big gig, I’ll hire a makeup artist and ham up the looks. I’ve been loving Ilia’s Skin Rewind stick in Cypress 24N. It’s matte but buttery and velvety when you put it on. It’s also buildable, so if I want more coverage, I can add more. The complexion brush really makes you look airbrushed. It’s incredible. And then for my lips, I’m obsessed with Glossier’s G Suit in Lane. It’s this rosy, maroon-ish shade that’s perfect.

 785.
A cat eye is my go to liner look. Ilia’s liquid liner is really good for this because the tip is super pointy and doesn’t smudge easily. And I cannot live without my eyelash extensions. I’ve been going to Jen Barrera for five years. At this point, she’s so quick because she knows my eye shape very well—I have a standing appointment with her every two weeks. I love that I don’t need to curl my lashes and wear mascara with them, but I still look awake and great.

 786.
HAIR
For 10 years, since I turned 30, I’ve had crazy hairstyles. I went from black to a platinum blonde bob in one session. I just do not give an F about hair. It’s so cool to showcase your personality through color. I was platinum for five years, and of course, it ruined my hair. Eventually the breakage was so bad that I had to stop—but I did go pink before I went back to black. Four years ago, I rocked the craziest baby bangs for a while. Then last September I was feeling red. The next day, I booked an appointment. Nancy Contreras at Framed Salon in Santa Monica is an incredible colorist. She does fun stuff; some of her clients have rainbow streaks or leopard spots. For cuts, I go Kristen Shaw. Demi Willis at Trim on Main Street cuts my bangs.

 787.
I use Gem Lites Ruby Red Colorwash to refresh my hair, but I also try not to shampoo a lot. When I surf, I put Crown Affair’s leave-In conditioner in my hair. I’ve learned from my years of having bleached hair that if you layer it with a conditioner before you go into the ocean, you’ll get less damage. When I get out of the water, I use a Wet Brush detangler and add in Andrew Fitzsimons’s AF1 10-in-1 leave-in. I’ve been using the Crown Affair hair oil recently because my strands are starting to get a little crunchy. I love Crown Affair’s dry shampoo, too.

 788.
FRAGRANCE
Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf has been my scent for over a decade. Seeing an ad sold me, and I have never used anything else. When it comes to my home, I hate paying for scented candles. Instead, I like Diptyque’s Baies room spray. I’m like, ‘Oh, this spray would last me probably six months versus burning this candle that’ll last me two weeks and costs $80.’ I’m always thinking about efficiency.”

 833.
Getting smooth skin has been one of my goals ever since I started a skin-care routine. I’m talkin’ skin that’s calm, soft, and smooth as butter. But despite my many attempts to even out my skin texture throughout the years, my dream has been cut short by breakouts, acne scars, and patchiness—that is, until I learned how to properly exfoliate. In a sea of harsh scrubs, cleansing brushes, and peels, learning how to remove dead skin from my face without the irritation has been an absolute game-changer for my smooth-skin dreams.

 834.
But, as with all good things, it took time to get my skin to where it is today with fewer clogged pores, minimal dark spots, and maximum glow. So to help you avoid my same trial and error, I spoke with four board-certified dermatologists—Hadley King, MD; Rachel Nazarian, MD; Carmen Castilla, MD; and Dendy Engelman, MD—about how to remove dead skin from the face, how to choose the best exfoliation methods and products for your skin type, and how to not only achieve ridiculously smooth skin, but to maintain it, too.

 836.
What are dead skin cells?

 837.
Dead skin cells are cells that have reached the surface of your skin and then matured to the point of dying, says Dr. King. Dead skin cells are typically the culprit of rough, uneven skin texture, which is why exfoliants are typically so effective at smoothing skin, especially as we get older. “Cell turnover slows as we age, which can then lead to a slower shedding of dead skin cells, leaving them to accumulate at the surface of your skin,” says Dr. King.

 843.
What does dead-skin buildup look like on the face?

 844.
A buildup of dead skin on the face looks like uneven skin texture, dullness, and potentially even acne due to clogged pores. Ever spend a few minutes in the mirror thinking, “Wow, I could probably use a facial”? It’s often due to a buildup of dead skin cells leaving your face feeling dull and blah, rather smooth and radiant.

 845.
Do I need to remove dead skin from my face?

 846.
No, you don’t need to remove dead skin from your face; your body will naturally shed it on its own. But there are benefits to speeding up the process, especially for the efficacy of your skin-care routine. A buildup of dead skin on the face can actually prevent your products from working to their full potential.

 847.
Active ingredients that you might be using daily (think: retinol, vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, etc.) actually penetrate the skin better when there’s less grime and buildup to pass through. “Thick layers of dead skin cells can prevent topicals from absorbing properly,” says Dr. Nazarian. Active ingredients will always penetrate exfoliated skin more efficiently.

 848.
How to remove dead skin from the face

 849.
The only way to prevent dead-skin buildup is by removing dead skin cells from the face through exfoliation (or through time, but who wants to wait that long?). Exfoliation—whether chemical or manual—helps shed the outermost layers of the epidermis (the superficial layer of your skin) to reveal newer skin beneath. Exfoliating can help “unclog pores, keep skin smooth and polished, and reduce acne breakouts,” says Dr. King.

 850.
Of course, if you’re new to the world of exfoliation, you may be wondering…

 851.
What is exfoliation?

 852.
“Exfoliation involves using tools or ingredients to remove the outermost layer of dead skin cells,” says Dr. Nazarian. There are two primary types of exfoliation: chemical exfoliation (which uses acids to dissolve the “glue” that holds your dead skin cells together) and physical exfoliation (which uses physical force to remove dead skin cells from your face via gritty scrubs, abrasive brushes, and sharp tools). Both types of exfoliation have the same goal—to rid dead skin cells—but get there using different mechanisms.

 853.
Though exfoliation isn’t a requirement, Dr. King says exposing a fresh layer of skin will help smooth its texture, ultimately making your skin appear softer and healthier. “Over time, regular chemical exfoliation can also increase cell turnover and stimulate collagen production,” she says.

 854.
What is chemical exfoliation?

 855.
Chemical exfoliation is exactly what it sounds like. “Chemical exfoliants use ingredients that loosen bonds between skin cells, dissolving them to slough the cells off,” says Dr. Nazarian. Chemical exfoliants include alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), beta-hydroxy acids (BHAs), poly-hydroxy-acids (PHAs), and fruit enzymes. “[These acids or enzymes] act to loosen the glue-like substance that holds the cells together, allowing them to slough away,” says Dr. King.

 856.
One of the most notable BHAs is salicylic acid, which works to clear pores and remove excess oil, making it ideal for preventing acne and breakouts. AHAs, like glycolic acid, gently slough off dead skin cells to reveal smoother, brighter skin underneath. PHAs, like gluconolactone, work similarly to AHAs by breaking down the glue that holds dead skin cells together, but they tend to be less irritating due to their larger molecular size. Fruit enzymes, like those found in pineapple and papaya, also loosen dead skin cells and are considered the least irritating of all AHAs.

 861.

 862.
What is physical exfoliation?

 863.
Physical exfoliation, on the other hand, is a type of exfoliation that removes dead skin mechanically by sloughing off dead skin cells with a scrub or tool. “Physical exfoliants use mechanical mechanisms to slough away dead skin cells on the surface, ‘physically’ removing skin,” says Dr. Nazarian (think: brushes, scrubs, razors, and dermaplaning).

 864.
Because of its abrasive technique, physical exfoliation poses more risks than chemical exfoliation. “The potential risk with physical exfoliation is that if you use a product with particles that are large, rough, or have sharp edges, you can create micro-tears in the skin that can lead to irritation, inflammation, and possibly even infection,” says Dr. King.

 865.
If you do want to try physical exfoliation, look for an exfoliant with super-fine particles and hydrating ingredients (like squalane, ceramides, and aloe vera) “that can help offset potential irritation that can occur from exfoliating,” says Dr. Nazarian. It’s also important to gradually build up frequency when it comes to incorporating a physical exfoliator into your routine. The experts recommend starting physical exfoliation once a week and building up to three times per week max, based on your skin’s type and tolerance.

 866.
Exfoliation and skin types

 867.
Because exfoliation can happen either chemically or physically, it might take some trial and error to discover the right method for you, which may even be a combination of both. “Exfoliators can be abrasive for the skin, which is why it’s so important to find one suitable for your skin type to avoid causing damage such as redness, irritation, and micro-injuries,” says Dr. Engelman. The good news is that certain exfoliators are often better for certain skin types, whether you’re working with sensitive, dry, combination, oily, or acne-prone.

 868.
How to exfoliate sensitive skin

 869.
All the experts agree that sensitive skin types, especially those with rosacea or eczema, tend to do better with chemical exfoliants, particularly formulas with PHAs. “Polyhydroxy-acid molecules are larger so they cannot penetrate as deeply,” says Dr. King, “which ensures that they work on the skin’s surface without affecting the layers underneath, making them less irritating.” PHAs can still help you achieve the benefits of exfoliation but with less risk of irritation, making them a particularly good fit for those with sensitive skin who cannot tolerate traditional AHAs or BHAs.

 870.
How to exfoliate dry skin

 871.
Dry skin types also do well with chemical exfoliation but should stick to exfoliating once weekly for the most part (again, this will vary by person, but once weekly is a good baseline). If you have dry skin, you should also look for moisturizing, acid-based exfoliators “to help lock in moisture and protect your skin barrier during exfoliation,” says Dr. King. She recommends humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid to hydrate your skin, emollients like triglycerides or ceramides to boost your skin barrier, or occlusives like petrolatum or oils to lock in moisture.

 872.
How to exfoliate combination skin

 873.
Combination skin types will benefit from a gentle and balanced exfoliation routine that can address both oily and dry areas. “Those with combination skin may need to exfoliate more often on the oily T-zone areas—forehead, nose, and chin—and less frequently on dry areas,” says Dr. Engelman. “They should look for gentle chemical exfoliants that are effective on oily zones, but won’t irritate dry or sensitive skin.” She recommends trying AHAs like glycolic acid or lactic acid that will help remove dead skin gently.

 874.
How to exfoliate oily skin

 875.
If you have oily skin, look for chemical or physical exfoliators with BHAs like salicylic acid, which can sink beneath the skin’s surface to help clear excess oil. “While AHAs are water-soluble and work on the surface of the skin, BHAs are oil-soluble so they can penetrate pores and work on the surface of the skin as well as inside the pore,” Dr. King notes. Look for a salicylic-based chemical exfoliator or BHA-filled physical exfoliator to help mattify oily areas, and work your way up to using it three times per week, depending on tolerance.

 880.

 881.
How to exfoliate acne-prone skin

 882.
Similarly, acne-prone skin can benefit from both chemical or physical exfoliators with BHAs and can exfoliate 2-3 times per week. “BHAs, like salicylic acid, are most often preferred for normal to oily skin prone to acne and clogged pores, since they can help reduce blackheads, whiteheads, pimples, and milia,” says Dr. King. Acne-prone skin types can also tolerate a combination of AHAs and BHAs to help address dead skin cells at the surface and underneath.

 883.
Because acne begins underneath the surface, an exfoliating product with both AHA and BHA can be incredibly effective. Dr. Engelman suggests using at-home exfoliation pads which usually come soaked in AHAs and BHAs to help resurface the skin. While it may be tempting to generously use exfoliation pads and wipes on oily skin, it is important to err on the side of caution to avoid overdoing it.

 884.
Can I over-exfoliate my skin?

 885.
Yes, you can easily over-exfoliate your skin, which “will lead to redness, eczema-like patches, and irritation,” says Dr. Castilla, “and will also likely leave your skin worse off than when you started.” Over-exfoliation can come from using too strong of a formula, going too hard on physical exfoliators, or using exfoliators too frequently. If your face stings or burns after application, that’s a big sign you’ve over-exfoliated and need to take a step back asap.

 886.
What to do if you over-exfoliate

 887.
If you do over-exfoliate, it’s important to give your skin a break for a few days before returning to an exfoliation routine. “If you remove the skin faster than it has time to accumulate, it’ll be raw and sensitive, so you need to take it slow,” says Dr. Nazarian. Stick with a creamy cleanser, a bland and hydrating moisturizer, and a gentle SPF in the interim. Once your skin barrier is no longer irritated or damaged (which typically takes at least seven days, but often up to two weeks depending on the severity of the initial irritation), then it’s safe to increase exfoliation frequency and strength as tolerated.

 888.
What to do after exfoliating your face

 889.
After exfoliation, apply a gentle, calming moisturizer and avoid other active or irritating ingredients like retinoids or products that contain alcohol or fragrances. Finish with sunscreen if you’re exfoliating in the morning, or apply your sunscreen the next day if you’re exfoliating at night. And no, this isn’t just because sunscreen is the most important step to any skin-care routine—it’s also because SPF “will protect your newly revealed surface skin cells,” says Dr. King, which is incredibly vital for minimizing skin damage.

 890.
Final takeaway

 891.
Yes, ridiculously smooth skin is possible with a regular exfoliation routine that is tailored to your skin type. But the reality is: Dead skin has to go in order for your glowy skin to shine through. Sensitive, drier skin types should opt for gentle chemical exfoliators with PHAs or fine-particle scrubs, while combination, oily, and acne-prone skin types can better tolerate both chemical and physical exfoliators with AHAs and BHAs.

 892.
Start by exfoliating once per week to gradually build up your tolerance, and if you over-exfoliate, give your skin a break for a week and stick with a gentle routine. After exfoliation, you should always follow up with a hydrating moisturizer and sunscreen to best protect your face, and by putting the right exfoliating methods into practice regularly, plumped, healthy skin will be at your fingertips.

 955.
(PHOENIX) — Democrats secured enough votes in the Arizona Senate on Wednesday to repeal a Civil War-era ban on abortions that the state’s highest court recently allowed to take effect.

 956.
Voting wasn’t complete but the Senate had the 16 votes it needed to advance the bill.

 957.
Fourteen Democrats in the Senate were joined by two Republican votes in favor of repealing the bill, which narrowly cleared the Arizona House last week and is expected to be signed by Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs.

 958.
The near-total ban, which predates Arizona’s statehood, permits abortions only to save the patient’s life — and provides no exceptions for survivors of rape or incest. In a ruling last month, the Arizona Supreme Court suggested doctors could be prosecuted under the 1864 law, which says that anyone who assists in an abortion can be sentenced to two to five years in prison.

 959.
If the repeal bill is signed, a 2022 statute banning the procedure after 15 weeks of pregnancy would become Arizona’s prevailing abortion law. Still, there would likely be a period when nearly all abortions would be outlawed, because the repeal won’t take effect until 90 days after the end of the legislative session, likely in June or July.

 960.
Several senators spoke about their motivations for voting as numbers were tallied on the repeal bill.

 961.
“This is a clear statement that the Legislature does not want the territorial ban to be enforceable,” said Democratic state Sen. Priya Sundareshan, who voted yes to repeal.

 962.
Arizona state Attorney General Kris Mayes called the vote “a win for freedom in our state,” but expressed concern that without an emergency clause, Arizonans would still be subject to the near total-abortion ban for some time.

 963.
“Rest assured, my office is exploring every option available to prevent this outrageous 160-year-old law from ever taking effect,” she said.

 964.
There were numerous disruptions from people in Senate gallery, as Republican state Sen. Shawnna Bolick explained her vote in favor of repeal, joining with Democrats.

 965.
GOP state Sen. Jake Hoffman denounced Republican colleagues for joining with Democratic colleagues, calling it an affront to his party’s principles.

 966.
“It is disgusting that this is the state of the Republican Party today,” Hoffman said.

 967.
Advocates on both sides of the abortion issue arrived outside the Arizona Senate on Wednesday to emphasize their views. They included people affiliated with Planned Parenthood and faith-based groups opposed to abortion.

 968.
A school-age girl kneeled in prayer in front of a table holding a large statute of the Virgin Mary, while a man with a megaphone shouted at passersby to repent.

 969.
“I am expecting it will be repealed, but I am praying it won’t be,” said Karen Frigon, who was handing out brochures from the Arizona Right to Life.

 970.
Arizona is one of a handful of battleground states that will decide the next president. Former President Donald Trump, who has warned that the issue could lead to Republican losses, has avoided endorsing a national abortion ban but said he’s proud to have appointed the Supreme Court justices who allowed states to outlaw it.

 971.
The law had been blocked since the U.S. Supreme Court’s 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion nationwide.

 972.
When Roe v. Wade was overturned in June 2022 though, then-Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich, a Republican, persuaded a state judge that the 1864 ban could again be enforced. Still, the law hasn’t actually been enforced while the case was making its way through the courts. Mayes, who succeeded Brnovich, urged the state’s high court against reviving the law.

 973.
Planned Parenthood officials vowed to continue providing abortions for the short time they are still legal and said they will reinforce networks that help patients travel out of state to places like New Mexico and California to access abortion.

 974.
Advocates are collecting signatures for a ballot measure allowing abortions until a fetus could survive outside the womb, typically around 24 weeks, with exceptions — to save the parent’s life, or to protect her physical or mental health.

 975.
Republican lawmakers, in turn, are considering putting one or more competing abortion proposals on the November ballot.

 976.
A leaked planning document outlined the approaches being considered by House Republicans, such as codifying existing abortion regulations, proposing a 14-week ban that would be “disguised as a 15-week law” because it would allow abortions until the beginning of the 15th week, and a measure that would prohibit abortions after six weeks of pregnancy, before many people know they’re pregnant.

 977.
House Republicans have not yet publicly released any such proposed ballot measures.
