58.
Sri Lanka’s minority Tamil community is marking 15 years since the end of the island nation’s civil war in an emotional ceremony that proceeded despite fears that authorities could prevent its staging.

 59.
Public events celebrating the Tamil Tigers separatist group, which fought a no-holds-barred battle to establish an ethnic minority homeland, are illegal and authorities have blocked past memorials.

 60.
Over the years, Sri Lankan authorities have repeatedly disrupted similar memorials in the island’s former war zones and arrested participants, but Saturday’s ceremony went ahead despite reports of heavy surveillance and allegations of intimidation.

 61.
Tamils say the events are held to remember all victims of the decades-long war, which concluded in 2009 after a military offensive in the last Tigers stronghold, that saw at least 40,000 civilians killed in its final months, according to estimates by the United Nations.

 62.
The operation was condemned internationally for the indiscriminate bombardment of civilians.

 63.

 64.
“Thousands died here the day before the war ended,” a 41-year-old Tamil village official, who asked not to be identified for fear of reprisal, told the AFP news agency at the memorial site in Mullivaikkal, on Saturday.

 65.
“There were lots of wounded people crying for help,” he added. “This will haunt me for the rest of my life.”

 66.
‘Collective failure’

 67.
Several thousand Tamils had travelled to the village for the remembrance, where they lit oil lamps to commemorate the dead.

 68.
This year, the commemoration was attended by Amnesty International’s global chief Agnes Callamard, the most senior foreign dignitary so far to attend a remembrance event in Sri Lanka’s battle-scarred north.

 69.
<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="size-arc-image-770 wp-image-2909722" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/AFP__20240518__34T44NK__v1__HighRes__SriLankaTamilUnrestConflictAmnesty-1716104880.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513" alt="Amnesty International's global chief and Secretary General Agnes Callamard (3R) attends a commemoration ceremony at Mullivaikkal village in northern Sri Lanka on May 18, 2024 to remember victims of the country's 37-year Tamil separatist war that claimed at least 100,000 lives 15 years ago. May 18 marks 15 years since the killing of the Tamil Tigers' charismatic but reclusive leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, who had led the separatist group in open rebellion against Sri Lankan forces since the 1970s. His death in the village of Mullivaikkal was the culmination of a lightning military offensive that killed at least 40,000 civilians in the final months of the fighting, according to UN estimates. 70.
The rights watchdog has for years pressed Sri Lankan authorities, who have repeatedly refused to permit an international inquiry into wartime atrocities, to properly investigate and prosecute those responsible for abuses.

 71.
“Today’s anniversary is a grim reminder of the collective failure of the Sri Lankan authorities and the international community to deliver justice to the many victims of Sri Lanka’s three-decade-long internal armed conflict,” Callamard said in a statement emailed to Al Jazeera.

 72.
“It is sobering to stand in the same place where, 15 years ago, countless civilian lives were lost during the last days of the war.”

 73.
Justin Trudeau, prime minister of Canada, which in 2022 voted to recognise May 18 as Tamil Genocide Remembrance Day, said on Saturday his country would “always advocate for justice and accountability for the crimes committed during the conflict”.

 74.
Tamil residents near the ceremony site told AFP that security forces had been noticeably more active in their communities as the anniversary neared.

 75.
“There is heavy surveillance of the people, and it is intimidation,” one Tamil resident said, asking not to be named for fear of harassment.

 76.
Saturday also marked 15 years since the killing of the Tamil Tigers’ charismatic but reclusive leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, who had led the separatist group in open rebellion against Sri Lankan forces since 1972.

 77.
His death in Mullivaikkal was the culmination of the lightning military offensive that killed thousands of civilians in the final months of the fighting.

 78.
Sri Lankan forces were accused of indiscriminately shelling civilians after telling them to move to “no fire zones” to clear the path of their assault.

 113.
Luka Doncic posted a triple-double and PJ Washington drilled the deciding free throws as the Dallas Mavericks erased a 17-point deficit to beat Oklahoma City 117-116 to reach the NBA Western Conference finals.

 114.
The Mavericks beat the top-seeded Thunder 4-2 on Saturday in the best-of-seven conference semifinal series to reach the conference finals for the second time in three years.

 115.
They will face either the defending champions Denver Nuggets or the Minnesota Timberwolves, who faced a deciding game seven in their series on Sunday.

 116.
“Being down 17 in a closeout game isn’t a position you want to be in,” said Dallas star Kyrie Irving. “We had to respond the way we’ve responded all season, just playing hard-nosed basketball on the defensive end, getting out in transition and just trusting that our pace would get us back in the game.

 117.
“It definitely feels good to get the series done.”

 118.
Doncic scored 29 points with 10 rebounds and 10 assists. Irving and Derrick Jones Jr scored 22 points apiece and Dereck Lively added 12 off the bench for the Mavs.

 119.
Washington scored all nine of his points in the fourth quarter – including two free throws with 2.5 seconds remaining that lifted the Mavs to victory.

 120.
“I think he was just waiting for his moment,” Irving said.

 121.
It came after a controversial call in the waning seconds with the Mavs down 116-115. Doncic drove into the lane and then passed to Washington in the corner. But Washington was fouled on his three-point attempt by Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

 122.
Oklahoma City challenged the call but it stood. Washington made the first two free throws before intentionally missing the third, the Thunder grabbing the rebound but unable to make a shot from beyond halfcourt.

 123.
“If I had the moment back, I wouldn’t have fouled him, let him make or miss the shot,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “[In] basketball – you win some, you lose some. You make mistakes.”

 124.
Gilgeous-Alexander, like Doncic a finalist for the Most Valuable Player award won by Denver’s Nikola Jokic, scored 36 points to lead the Thunder, who led by 16 at half-time and pushed the advantage to 17 early in the third before the Mavericks stormed back in front of a frenzied home crowd.

 125.
A three-pointer by Washington tied it at 105-105 with 4:11 remaining and they traded the lead three times from there, Thunder rookie Chet Holmgren throwing down a dunk to put Oklahoma City up 116-115 with 20.4 seconds left.

 126.
Facing elimination, the Thunder burst out of the gate and led by seven after one quarter.

 127.
Doncic gave the Mavs their first lead of the game with less than five minutes left in the second quarter.

 128.
The Thunder responded with a vengeance as back-to-back dunks from Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams restored their lead. Oklahoma City finished the second quarter on a 24-6 run to lead 64-48 at half-time.

 129.
With Doncic and Irving leading the way, the Mavs clawed back in the third, outscoring the Thunder 35-26 in the period.

 130.
“The whole team is amazing,” Doncic said. “Amazing comeback, amazing effort. This team is special.”

 131.
Thunder coach Mark Daigneault was full of praise for his young team. Oklahoma City’s starting five have an average age of 23, but matched the Nuggets for the best record in the West and swept the New Orleans Pelicans in the first round of the playoffs.

 132.
“I’ve said all year this has been a total pleasure,” he said. “It’s really sad for that to finish.”

 241.
2: Bayer Leverkusen won just two titles before this season – the 1988 Europa League and the 1993 German Cup.

 270.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Rain swept through South Florida, drenching supporters, slowing down players and complicating Saturday’s MLS match between Inter Miami CF and D.C. United to create a dismal atmosphere. The grim weather mirrored the performances from both teams on the pitch, as the stalemate dragged into the second half. The deadlock felt unbreakable at either end, before the final second of the match witnessed a phenomenon.

 271.
Seconds after entering the game due to a substitution triggered by the MLS concussion protocol, Leonardo Campana made his first touch and set himself up to score a right-footed, game-winning banger and inject life into an otherwise uninspiring match.

 273.
The dread that once carried through the stands at Chase Stadium was suddenly replaced with frantic joy as Campana paraded shirtless, Miami head coach Gerardo Martino cracked the first smile in 90 minutes, and water splashed with every jump of joy by fans.

 274.
Critics often say the best clubs are those who find a way to win in the most difficult situations, even when playing badly. Does Saturday’s 1-0 victory mean that Miami have graduated into a team that can survive a match without a Lionel Messi miracle?

 283.
The Argentine forward usually headlines a game with at least one goal and one assist, stealing the show with his knowledge of spatial awareness and talented left-foot. He currently leads the league in assists with 10 and stands in third place for most goals scored this season. 284.
The two made history against the New York Red Bulls at the beginning of May, after Suarez recorded his first hat trick in the league while Messi became the first MLS player to manage five assists and one goal in a single half.

 285.
Together, the two are credited for 25 of Miami’s 36 goals scored this season but, against D.C. United, the often-deadly duo made no contributions in attack. It’s now the second consecutive match without a strike from Messi or Suarez, after the Argentine sat out the midweek game against Orlando City SC with an injury, while the Uruguayan lined up alongside Matías Rojas and Robert Taylor. Still, Inter Miami have collected four points in the last two games.

 286.
Surviving without Messi seemed impossible just one week ago, with the Herons suffering from early goals and a lack of structure. 290.
“Yes [we’ve conceded really early goals.] We talk about it throughout the week, during the tactical discussions, the minute before going into the game. But they still do it,” Martino said on May 2.

 291.
“That’s the bad part, but the good part is we know how to come back from it … But it is a problem to solve. It’s constantly talked about, extremely talked about. Until now, we can’t see the solution.”

 292.
Now, however, Martino may have found the formula and the foundations of a stable Miami defence. 300.
“Tomas Aviles was the best player of the match against D.C. United,” Martino said after complimenting the defence for their efforts.

 301.
Beyond the backline avoiding concession, Inter Miami’s secondary characters are now slowly getting more involved. Benjamin Cremaschi boasted a passing accuracy of 92% and completed two shots to test D.C. Substitute Campana led the expected goal percentage with .16, drastically surpassing Messi’s .04 and Suarez’s 0.0.

 302.
The two consecutive results without a contribution from Messi signal hope for Inter Miami as the Copa America approaches. The team will be without their best player, and several other figures, for five matches: Philadelphia Union (June 15), Columbus Crew (June 19), Nashville SC (June 29), Charlotte FC (July 3), and FC Cincinnati (July 6).

 303.
The recurring question has been: how will Miami manage during the upcoming FIFA window? With Messi dominating most matches and orchestrating the comeback from costly defensive errors, the future looked murky for the Herons. But ultimately, the success of a club cannot depend on the performance of just one player. Inter Miami previously struggled with that concept, but the win over D.C. United has now calmed nerves.

 304.
“If these players find themselves in form, with confidence, secure, and understand the challenges of the five games after St. Louis, it’s clear that we’ll be able to survive Copa America,” Martino said.

 343.
Only 12 countries now maintain formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan, mostly poorer developing nations.

 344.
Lai, detested by Beijing as a “separatist”, is expected to pledge to secure stability by maintaining the status quo in the island’s relationship with China in his inauguration speech on Monday.

 345.
Before his inauguration, supporters of the opposition Taiwan People’s Party (TPP) are set to march in Taipei to protest against Lai’s governing Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and demand that Lai carry out parliamentary, judicial and constitutional reforms.

 346.
‘Dangerous separatist’

 347.
China claims democratic Taiwan as part of its territory, maintaining a near-daily military presence with frequent appearances of fighter jets, drones and naval ships around the island.

 348.
It has in recent months sent in coastguard ships around Kinmen, an outlying island administered by Taipei located just 5km (3 miles) from the Chinese city of Xiamen.

 349.
Kinmen has been the site of ramped-up tensions after Lai, whom China has branded a “dangerous separatist”, was elected in Taiwan’s January elections.

 350.
A deadly fishing incident in February involving a Chinese speedboat kicked off a row between China and Taiwan, which has yet to be resolved.

 351.
It was carrying four people and capsized on February 14 near Kinmen while Taiwan’s coastguard was pursuing it, killing two people.

 352.
Taipei’s coastguard defended its actions, saying the boat was within “prohibited waters” and zigzagging before it capsized. But Beijing has accused Taipei of “hiding the truth” about the incident.

 353.
China has since stepped up patrols around Kinmen. At least five formations of official Chinese ships have briefly sailed through Kinmen’s restricted waters this month.

 354.
Across the strait in the Chinese seaside city of Pingtan, also home to a military base, the AFP news agency said its reporters saw at least two military transport helicopters fly overhead on Sunday morning.

 405.

 406.
Johannesburg, South Africa – As a teenager living on the East Rand of Johannesburg, Steve Chingwaru thought the flat-topped mounds of rock and earth that dotted the skyline were a natural feature of the cityscape. Jo’burg isn’t very windy, but when the wind does blow – usually around August – the air is filled with orange dust. “It gets in your hair, your clothes, your throat,” says Chingwaru.

 407.
Now, barely a decade later, the 26-year-old geometallurgist is being flown up to the city of his youth on an almost weekly basis by mining companies who want him to help them extract maximum value from the mounds of orange dust. That’s because the mounds are made up of mine waste from the richest gold deposit ever discovered, and Chingwaru has just calculated that approximately 420 tonnes of “invisible gold” – with a value of $24bn – is buried in the Witwatersrand’s mine dumps.

 408.
<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="size-arc-image-770 wp-image-2908041" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/GettyImages-173658436-1716042342.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513" alt="A mine dump of fine sand, the residue of crushed rock from deep mining, is eroded by the elements on July 15, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa. 410.
The massive discovery came from research for his master’s thesis — that was so impressive it saw his degree upgraded to a PhD.

 411.
Soon after enrolling in a geology degree at Stellenbosch University, Chingwaru realised he didn’t want to be an exploration geologist. “Camping in the middle of nowhere wasn’t for me,” he says, flashing a winning smile. He was drawn to the nascent field of geometallurgy, which combines classic geology with metallurgy – and typically involves working at a processing plant. For his academic research, Chingwaru focused on Johannesburg’s iconic mine dumps, known as “tailings” in the industry.

 412.
“They were already extracting the gold from these tailings,” he explains. “But they were only managing to get out 30 percent of the gold they contained.” I wanted to know what was happening to the other 70 percent … Where was it sitting? Why weren’t they getting it out? Seventy percent is a lot,” he says, before breaking into an unexpected chortle.

 413.
His research, which examined samples from mine dumps across the Witwatersrand, found that the majority of the gold was hidden in a mineral called pyrite (sometimes called, “fool’s gold”) – and was being entirely overlooked by the current extraction techniques. “We already know how to get gold out of pyrite,” he says, citing the example of the Carlin mine in Nevada. “But at the moment, all the tailings processors in South Africa are only extracting free gold, using cyanide.”

 414.
<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="size-arc-image-770 wp-image-2897759" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/GettyImages-457537059-1715618119.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513" alt="A traffic highway and railway lines, right, pass waste ground and a mine dump in this aerial view of Johannesburg, South Africa, on Saturday, Dec. 14, 2013. 415.
Which begets an obvious question – why?

 416.
The answer is twofold. One, Chingwaru is the first person to work out how much “invisible gold” is hidden in tailings across the Witwatersrand. And two, it will take a lot of time and effort to extract all 420 tonnes.

 417.
“His research shows that there is a lot of gold. The big question, however, is whether we currently have the technology to economically extract all of the gold and make a profit,” says Associate Professor Megan Becker, who works at the Centre for Minerals Research in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Cape Town (she was not involved in Chingwaru’s research). “Unless this can be done, no company will invest in it.”

 418.
The intense interest from several South African tailings reprocessors suggests it’s an investment they would be willing to make. Since news of his research got out, Chingwaru has spoken to some pretty senior figures in the South African gold industry: “They all said that, yes, it would be expensive to extract the gold, they could still make a decent profit. Especially if the gold price stays where it is.”

 419.
To underline this point, Chingwaru has also received job offers from companies in Australia, Canada, Germany and the United States.

 420.

Steve Chingwaru stands in front of one of the massive thickeners at the DRDGOLD gold reclamation plant in Weltevredenpark, Johannesburg [Courtesy of Steve Chingwaru]

 421.
Back to the start

 422.
What makes Chingwaru’s discoveries even more remarkable is his challenging upbringing.

 423.
Chingwaru’s father died before he was born, so young Steve and his siblings were brought up by their entrepreneur mum, Peggy, in Harare, Zimbabwe.

 424.
Things started well enough, with Chingwaru attending a prestigious boarding school in Bulawayo. But the 2008 economic downturn hit Zimbabwe – whose economy was already in an imperilled state – particularly hard, leading to a hyperinflation crisis that left people queueing for everyday items like bread and cooking oil. School fees became unaffordable, and Peggy was forced to sell the family home to stay afloat.

 425.
“I didn’t see a future for myself in Zim,” remembers Chingwaru, who was 10 or 11 at the time. “It was my decision to move to South Africa.”

 426.
Moving to South Africa to live with his aunt and her children was, he admits, “scary at first, but when I got there, it was OK”, understating the challenges he faced. The first school he went to in South Africa was so far from his aunt’s place that he had to wake up at 4am to get there on time. Commuting on overcrowded trains meant he’d often get home after dark and still have to do his homework. Tough as it was, there was never a question of giving up. “As a kid you just do it,” he says. “I liked school. And my mom always told me ‘If you go to school everything will be all right.’”

 427.

Steve Chingwaru with his mother, Peggy, celebrating Christmas Day in Harare in 2018 [Courtesy of Steve Chingwaru]

 428.
Once Chingwaru had transferred to a school that was within walking distance of his aunt’s home, he began to thrive – making many friends, dabbling in swimming and athletics, and excelling in the classroom. He did so well, in fact, that he got an award for coming first in the region for geography in his final exams.

 429.
As if this wasn’t enough of a career nudge, Chingwaru also had unfinished family business with the earth’s crust. In his final year of high school, he returned to Zimbabwe to see family and ended up visiting the ruins of Lithium Lodge, the grandiose mansion built by his grandfather, the larger-than-life prospector George Henry Nolan, in the 1950s. Despite being the first person to discover lithium in Zimbabwe, Nolan ended up losing most of his fortune – and his home was bombed during the Second Chimurenga (the Zimbabwean War of Liberation).

 430.
“I didn’t know I had this rich history,” says Chingwaru. “And I had no idea I had so many cousins … My grandfather had five wives.”

 431.

In 2015, Chingwaru visited the Bikita lithium mine that his grandfather, George Herny Nolan, discovered. 432.
Moving on up

 433.
After high school, Chingwaru decided to move once again – “I’d had enough of Jo’burg,” he says – this time to the leafy and predominantly Afrikaans university town of Stellenbosch. “It was very different to anywhere I’d lived before,” he remembers. “But I liked it a lot. There are loads of trees. You can walk everywhere.”

 434.
Chingwaru’s success in high school geography led him to the university’s highly rated Earth Sciences department. The possibility of his degree landing him a lucrative career as a mining geologist was another driver.

 435.
He excelled academically, but he also found time to wait tables and pull pints, being a foreigner, he was only entitled to partial bursaries, to indulge his passions for gaming and anime, and to go for thrice-weekly runs. On top of it all, he also maintained a very active social life.

 436.

Chingwaru received his PhD degree in Stellenbosch in March 2024 [Courtesy of Steve Chingwaru]

 437.
“He’s super personable,” says his PhD supervisor Bjorn von der Heyden. “His number one attribute is that he is so nice and caring.” Von der Heyden, who first encountered Chingwaru as an undergraduate, was instantly impressed by the intelligent questions he asked in class – and the unsolicited mentoring he provided to other students. While he is softly spoken, Chingwaru “doesn’t fade into the background, because he gets involved and is genuinely interested in other people”, says von der Heyden.

 438.
After completing his honours with another professor, Chingwaru signed up for his master’s with von der Heyden. “He put together some great results, using really advanced techniques, that enabled him to upgrade to a PhD,” says von der Heyden. “Upgrading is a risk because you can end up with nothing if it goes wrong. I only offer it to my most exceptional students.”

 439.
Chingwaru didn’t just obtain his PhD – he did so in record time, finishing a full year ahead of schedule. “There were lots of late nights and cancelled weekends,” he remembers. “At one point, I thought I wouldn’t make the [self-imposed] deadline, but I pushed through.”

 440.
What made it even more demanding – but also more interesting – was the multidisciplinary nature of geometallurgy. “I was going to the tailings to collect sand. Doing lab work with cyanide and lasers. Data processing. Going to conferences. I taught myself statistics.” The possibility of his degree landing him a lucrative career as a mining geologist was also a driver.

 441.
When the time came to defend his PhD in front of a panel of experts, Chingwaru didn’t contemplate being nervous. Not only had he been presenting “for years”, he says, but he realised that “I know my PhD better than anyone else … I can answer anything they throw at me.”

 442.

Chingwaru stands on top of the cyanide oxygen leaching agitation tanks at DRDGOLD [Courtesy of Steve Chingwaru]

 443.
Where to now?

 444.
With a PhD in his pocket, a flurry of media coverage – many Zimbabwean and South African news outlets seized on the $24bn figure – and job offers in five countries, the world really does appear to be Chingwaru’s oyster. While Von der Heyden insists that “there is no wrong answer for someone of his calibre”, Chingwaru is weighing his career options carefully.

 445.
On one side of the scale is his desire to experience new countries and cultures. On the other: his ambition to take his PhD research beyond the page and get involved in the extraction work itself. “On paper, it all seemed so simple,” he says. “When I was on the plants I realised it was way more complicated than I thought … I’m always up for a challenge.”

 446.
Whatever shape his career takes, Chingwaru says he is passionate about using his skillset to help the mining industry embrace a more sustainable future. Reprocessing the Witwatersrand tailings, for example, could have significant health benefits for the people of Johannesburg – especially, Becker says, “if there is a viable business case to remove the gold, the sulphur associated with pyrite, and any remnant uranium”.

 447.
<img decoding="async" loading="lazy" class="size-arc-image-770 wp-image-2897757" src="https://www.aljazeera.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/GettyImages-173658590-1715618090.jpg?w=770&resize=770%2C513" alt="JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - JULY 16: A warning sign guards the entrance to to old mine dumps at Crown Mines on July 16, 2013 in Johannesburg, South Africa.
