  47. <p>They also told the Court that the accused file bail applications in the High Court as the matter cannot be heard in the Magistrates Court since it is an indictable offence.</p>

  49. <p>In Court, the charges were read to Vakaloloma and he understood the charges he is being charged with.</p>
  50. <p>Vakaloloma has also waived his rights to counsel.</p>
  51. <p><strong>Background</strong></p>
  52. <p>The accused is alleged to have in April 2022, seriously assaulted the 24-year-old victim with an iron rod outside a motel in Suva, causing serious injuries.</p>
  53. <p>He was rushed to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital where he unfortunately succumbed to injuries sustained during attack.</p>

  337. <p>The draws will be conducted at 2.30pm at the Digicel Fiji Outlet in the Damodar City Complex in Suva.</p>
  338. <p>With eight teams vying for the title in Labasa, anticipation is high to see which teams will face off against each other in the group stages.</p>
  339. <p>Host Labasa and defending champions Lautoka will be the seeded teams in each group.</p>
  340. <p>The other six teams- Rewa, Ba, Navua, Lautoka, Nadi and Nasinu be drawn according to their standing in the DFPL.</p>
  341. <p>The group matches of the first major tournament on the Fiji FA calendar will be played at Subrail Park in Labasa from 31 May to 2 June.</p>

  412. <p>The juveniles were charged with aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, and theft offences.</p>
  413. <p>They were among 52 accused persons charged with serious crimes last month.</p>
  414. <p>There were 20 victims of the 49 counts of serious crimes.</p>
  415. <p>Cash and assorted items were stolen during the alleged aggravated robbery, aggravated burglary, and theft offences which consisted of house and shop break-ins, and day and night street muggings and carjacking incidents.</p>
  416. <p>There was one incident where a 23-year-old man and a 20-year-old man were charged with aggravated burglary.</p>
  417. <p>The accused persons allegedly broke into their 36-year-old cousin’s house with the intent to commit theft.</p>
  418. <p>A 37-year-old man was charged with the aggravated burglary and theft of a boat engine from the Ministry of Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management office.</p>
  419. <p>There was one incident where a 23-year-old man was charged with arson.</p>
  420. <p>The accused person allegedly set fire to the Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute along with its assets causing damage of $1.1 million.</p>
  421. <p>13 accused persons were charged for their alleged involvement in the transportation and facilitation of more than four tonnes of methamphetamine.</p>
  422. <p>The accused persons were charged with the unlawful possession of illicit drugs, unlawful importation of illicit drugs, and possession of properties suspected of being proceeds of crime.</p>
  423. <p>Two men were charged with the attempted unlawful exportation of illicit drugs.</p>
  424. <p>The two accused persons&#8217; matter was discontinued in 2020 due to loss of exhibits, however, after the completion of further investigation, the duo have been recharged for allegedly attempting to unlawfully export 2015.7 grams of cocaine in 2018.</p>
  425. <p>A 25-year-old man was charged with two counts of unlawful possession of illicit drugs.</p>
  426. <p>The accused person was allegedly found in possession of 7.93 grams and 1.02 kilograms of cocaine on two separate occasions.</p>
  427. <p>There was one incident where a 25-year-old man was charged with the unlawful wounding and common assault of his 3-year-old stepdaughter.</p>
  428. <p>The accused person allegedly slapped the child and unlawfully wounded her by burning her leg and thighs with tobacco.</p>
  429. <p>A 22-year-old man was charged with assault causing actual bodily harm to his 23-year-old de facto partner while in another incident, a 35-year-old man was charged with damaging property and assault causing actual bodily harm to his 34-year-old wife.</p>
  430. <p>There was one incident where a 24-year-old man and a 28-year-old man were charged with assault causing actual bodily harm and act with intent to cause grievous harm to a 38-year-old man.</p>
  431. <p>The accused persons are cousins who allegedly punched the victim and hit his head with a freezer compressor.</p>
  432. <p>A 34-year-old man was charged with the murder of a 32-year-old taxi driver.</p>
  433. <p>The accused person was also charged with one count of aggravated robbery.</p>
  434. <p>The accused person allegedly stole the victim’s mobile phone and his taxi and in the process assaulted the victim which resulted in his death.</p>
  435. <p>A 22-year-old man was charged with the murder of a 38-year-old man while in another incident, a 20-year-old man was charged with the murder of a 37-year-old man.</p>

  549. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Minister for Public Works, Ro Filipe Tuisawau says the Government will continue to engage private contractors in the public sector, striking the right balance for a more cost-effective and responsible use of taxpayer funds.</p>
  550. <p>Responding to questions in Parliament on the future of the Fiji Roads Authority if the Public Works Department is to be fully re-established and if the Government is thinking of not engaging private contractors anymore to do any work concerning both bodies, Tuisawau said this was not true.</p>
  551. <p>Tuisawau said the Government will continue to work towards finding the right balance.</p>
  552. <p>He said moving forward responsibly regarding taxpayer funds, they will need to have the right measures in place to complement rather than duplicate.</p>
  553. <p>&#8220;This is the fundamental issue at hand.&#8221;</p>
  554. <p>The Minister said that a special audit that was carried out last year found that $400 million was used and some decisions were questionable.</p>
  555. <p>Tuisawau said the special audit found that the private contractors that were engaged were linked to the FijiFirst Party and were contributing substantially to the FijiFirst campaign.</p>
  556. <p>This was challenged by Opposition MP Faiyaz Koya who said that contracting companies are not involved with political parties but individuals who contribute to it.</p>
  557. <p>Speaker of Parliament Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu at that point intervened and said that the Minister must have evidence to back his claims that individuals or companies are affiliated with political parties.</p>
  558. <p>In response, Tuisawau said that wrong decisions were taken that cost the Government an astronomical amount and questioned whether an effective or cost-benefit analysis was conducted properly.</p>
  559. <p>“The question is the cost of engaging the private contractor against the cost of keeping the PWD? That would involve a really good study,” he added.</p>

  730. <p>“It’s been such a long time. So many moments, good and bad,” reflected Argentina’s Gastón Revol, who debuted for his country back in 2009, on winning the SVNS title.</p>
  731. <p>Speaking to World Rugby Media he said the journey was really difficult.</p>
  732. <p>&#8220;We kept on trying, kept on training, kept on believing in this team and I think we have the prize that we deserve.&#8221;</p>

  949. <p>Permanent Secretary for Education Selina Kuruleca in a statement said the Ministry is demanding answers, and pursuing legal action against those involved in the production.</p>
  950. <p>This follows concerns raised by parents and some old scholars.</p>
  951. <p>The video showed students of ACS in their cheerleaders and school uniform in the video, produced by VT1s of VTBOP Music, a Fijian music label.</p>
  952. <p>“There was no consent or approval taken from the principal or the Ministry of Education,” Kuruleca said.</p>
  953. <p>She added that they were disappointed with the artist and the recording agent behind the production of the content of the video.</p>
  954. <p>VTBOP Music has removed the Official Visualiser for VT1S- Buna from the VT1S YouTube Channel.</p>
  955. <p>In a statement, VTBOP Managing Director Tikiko Korocowiri said this was their decision and made out of great concern for the comments directed at the students and their artist.</p>
  956. <p>“No official request to remove the video was communicated to VTBOP Music. We want to clearly state that VT1S had sought and secured the relevant approvals before filming.&#8221;</p>
  957. <p>&#8220;The safety of everyone involved in making art at VTBOP Music is our number one priority, and we stand firm in preserving these values.&#8221;</p>
  958. <p>“We remain committed to taking Fiji Music to the world and thank all our fans for their support,” Korocowiri said.</p>

  1277. <content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The Fiji Police&#8217;s MPaisa Taskforce has charged a 37-year-old woman for allegedly obtaining $500 from a member of the public for a car rental service that turned out to be fake.</p>
  1278. <p>The accused, a resident of Davuilevu, Nausori, is alleged to have on the 13th day of December 2023, dishonestly obtained the said amount through the MPaisa platform.</p>
  1279. <p>She allegedly engaged with another to deceive the victim of a rental car service which was posted on Facebook.</p>
  1280. <p>The victim sent the money where it was withdrawn by the accused.</p>
  1281. <p>She is then alleged to have cut off all forms of communication with the victim.</p>
  1282. <p>The woman has been charged with one count of Dishonestly Dealing with Personal Financial Information and one count of Obtaining Financial Advantage by Deception and will be produced at the Nasinu Magistrates Court today.</p>
