34.

Grant Taylor had perhaps his worst start of the season in his final WSU career start, but still found himself climbing the WSU record books.

 35.
WSU baseball (21-30, 9-19 Pac-12) lost to No. 20 Oregon (35-16, 17-11) 9-2 Thursday in Eugene, Oregon.

 36.
The Cougs are 0.5 games back from a spot in what would be their first Pac-12 baseball tournament, in which the top nine teams in the conference quality. WSU trails UW by 0.5 games.

 37.
Against the No. 20 Oregon Ducks, the WSU senior right-hander allowed six runs on five hits, one walk and two hit-by pitches, but struck out seven in 5.0 innings. Taylor’s seven K’s gave him 99 total on the season and 252 Cougar career strikeouts.

 38.
Taylor’s 99 strikeouts in 2024 are tied for the seventh-most single-season strikeouts in program history and the most since 2009. His 252 career K’s surpassed Joe McIntosh (1971–73) for the third-most in program history.

 39.
While there was no doubt Taylor was one of the more talented pitchers in WSU’s program history, he allowed more runs in a single start than he had all year.

 40.
Taylor hit Drew Smith, Oregon’s lead-off man with a pitch and allowed Mason Neville to homer for an early 2-0 Duck lead.

 41.
Joey Kramer reached base four times, first reaching in the second inning on a walk, and coming around to score thanks to singles from Casen Taggart and Jacob Morrow. WSU trailed 2-1 in the second inning.

 42.
Neville’s orbital launches were far from finished, as he hit a second straight home run in the bottom of the second. With two swings of Neville’s bat, the Ducks led the Cougs 5-1 after two innings.

 43.
Taylor conceded his sixth run on a wild pitch in the third inning but settled in for scoreless fourth and fifth innings.

 44.
Kramer reached base again in the fourth and advanced to third on Nate Swarts’ single. In the sixth inning, Kramer cranked a solo shot down the leftfield line to cut into the Duck lead 6-2.

 45.
Kramer reached on a lead-off walk in the ninth inning finishing 2-for-2 with two walks and a HR, but got stranded 90 feet from home plate. Kevin Haynes pitched 2.0 innings and allowed three runs while Carson Judd tossed a scoreless eighth.

 46.
The Wazzu outfielders were busy making two highlight-reel home run robbery grabs. Swarts tracked down a would-be home run in left-center, leaping at the wall to make the catch. Logan Johnstone tracked a ball deep to right field, lept and robbed a home run from Ryan Cooney.

 47.
WSU baseball seeks to even the series at 6:05 p.m. Friday. Fans can watch on the Pac-12 Network as Conner Wilford takes the mound.

He announced his transfer to Cornell May 11 via social media, taking his talents across the country and into the Ivy League.

 72.
Fifth-year guard Joseph Yesufu was next. Injured most of the year, he played only six games for the Cougs, averaging 6.2 points on 36.8% shooting. It was announced that he will be transferring to West Virginia Monday.

 73.
Yesufu started his career at Drake under head coach Darian DeVries before transferring to and winning a national championship with Kansas. DeVries was hired by West Virginia just after the season ended and now brings his former point guard with him.

 74.
On the other end of the portal, the Cougs have seen a pair of additions. Rihards Vavers is a forward out of Latvia who is transferring to WSU from Quinnipiac University. He averaged 7.9 points on 37% 3-point shooting last season. Vavers announced his transfer via social media May 7.

 103.
Manzardo, one of the finest hitters to come through the WSU baseball program in recent history, made his Major League Debut May 6 in Detroit. The Coeur d’Alene, Idaho native destroyed the Triple-A level in the first month of the season, slashing .303. / .375 / .642 through 29 games.

 104.
Manzardo struck out three times during his debut versus Detroit. The rookie is expected to be in the majors for at least as long as Steven Kwan recovers from injury, but could stick around if his offensive numbers quickly resemble, or trend in the direction of his Triple-A production.

 105.
He recorded his first career major league hit in his third game May 8 vs. the Tigers.

 111.
Through six games, Manzardo is 3-for-17 with one double.

 112.
The Phoenix Mercury waived a slew of young talent, including Bella Murekatete and both of their 2024 draft picks. The five-year WSU starter signed a training camp contract with the Phoenix Mercury and played an exhibition game in Seattle against the Storm. The Mercury drafted Charisma Osborne out of UCLA and waived her too.

 118.
WSU forward Jaylen Wells, the man responsible for the four-point play that boosted the then-No. 23 Cougs over the then-No. 7 Arizona Wildcats in Tuscon, along with a myriad of outstanding performances, has finally earned an invite to the NBA Combine.

 119.
After beginning the season injured and on the bench, Wells earned his way into the starting lineup where he posted 12.6 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.2 assists per game.

 120.
Coug fans were initially outraged when Bronny James, fresh off a lackluster freshman year at USC, earned an invite to the combine, while talented emerging stars such as Wells were not invited. Wells has recently appeared in some projections for the second round (which means very little in the grand scheme of things but means a lot in terms of the optics surrounding Wells’ chances and fan engagement).

 121.
At NBA G League Camp, Isaac Jones, WSU alumnus and 2023–24 leading scorer impressed.

 122.
Jones’ story as a short kid who quit basketball after high school, experienced a massive growth spurt, went from a job loading trucks to walking onto Wenatchee Valley’s roster, earning a scholarship at Idaho and then transferring to WSU has caught people’s attention.

 123.
And…he backed it up with a highlight-reel tap-in dunk that knocked the sign off the hoop.

 130.
“Seen that before,” Wells tweeted.

 131.
Jones’ dunk was the No. 1 play on SportsCenter that night and his heroics earned him a promotion to the NBA Draft Combine.

 132.
With Wells and Jones getting looks, the chances of two more Cougs making the NBA grow by the day. The NBA Draft occurs June 26–27.

 133.
Netflix’s Roast of Tom Brady involved a slew of characters, including former teammates, comedians and former Patriots coach Bill Bellechek.

 134.
But one of the finer jokes of the night came from legendary Cougar quarterback and Super Bowl Champion Drew Bledsoe early in the special. Bledsoe said his wife helped him write that joke and that he had a much harsher one initially in mind.

 167.
In his final start in Pullman, senior Duke Brotherton took the mound and struggled early, allowing five runs in the first three innings, settling in for two scoreless, before a disastrous sixth inning.

 168.
The Cougar bats did not do much to help, putting the ball into play, but never managing to string more than two hits together in a single inning.

 169.
Senior shortstop Kyle Russell of University Place, Washington, observed his final game in Pullman after four years on the Palouse with a 3-for-5, two RBI-double day. Russell did his part, but only five other Cougs managed a hit.

 170.
Brotherton swiftly secured two outs in the first thanks to first pitch strikes and a sliding grab from leftfielder Casen Taggart.

 171.
With two outs in the first, Brotherton hit Kevin Takeuchi with a pitch and the Trojans opened the floodgates. Austin Overn got aboard with a single and stole second. In trying to catch Overn, WSU catcher Jacob Morrow’s throw bounced off of second baseman Crew Parke’s glove as the ball dribbled into the outfield.

 172.
Takeuchi scored on the throwing error and Overn scored on Ethan Hedges’ single to put USC up 2-0 before the Cougs even came up to bat.

 173.
USC added two runs on three more hits in the second inning and Overn doubled and scored again on a Bryce Martin-Grudzielanek RBI single in the third.

 174.
Down 5-0, the Cougs unveiled the home-field advantage of the Palouse. Parke hit the ball hard out to right field that wound its way out of the right fielder’s reach thanks to a strong gust of wind. Max Hartman drew his second walk of the day and Russell, who grounded out into a double play in the first, let his barrel lose, finding the green for a two-RBI double.

 175.
In the fourth, Brotherton hit his grove thanks to a heads-up Morrow pick-off that caught USC’s lead-off runner trying to steal. Brotherton struck out USC’s top hitter, Ryan Jackson, looking and delivered his lone 1-2-3 inning in the fifth, dispatching USC’s two, three and four hitters.

 176.
In the sixth inning, Brotherton hit two Trojan hitters and Connor Clift, USC nine-hole hitter, took a hung pitch from Brotherton over the left-center fence for his first home run of the season.

 177.
USC led 8-2.

 178.
Brotherton’s career-high 5.2 innings were spoiled by Clift’s home run as the Trojans managed eight runs on eight hits. Each of the three runners Brotherton hit came around to score.

 179.
Joey Kramer responded with a double in the bottom of the sixth and crossed home thanks to Morrow’s RBI single. That would be all WSU’s offense could manage.

 180.
Senior Spencer Jones entered the game and got the Cougs out of the sixth and through two outs in the seventh. Jones handed the ball to fellow senior Jack Lee who struck out Chris Brown to end the inning.

 181.
Kaden Wickersham ran into trouble in the eighth, walking three and allowing two runs.

 182.
With his team trailing 10-3, senior Kevin Haynes, fresh off 1.1 scoreless innings the night before, pitched another clean ninth.

 183.
USC’s pitching staff had two Washington-born sons who dealt on Mother’s Day to keep the Trojans on top.

 184.
Starter William Watson of Bow, Washington allowed three runs over 5.1 innings. He struck out three and walked four, but did enough to earn his third win.

 185.
Mario Edwards struck out two to finish the sixth inning and USC turned to Seattle-born Jared Feikes. Feikes got hit around by the Cougs Friday night, allowing six runs without managing an out. Feikes was far more efficient Sunday, plowing through 2.0 scoreless innings.

 186.
After the game, Feikes gave his mom flowers, as the Feikes family had made their way to Pullman from Seattle.

 187.
Flame-throwing Josh Blum topped out at 95 MPH and faced four batters in the ninth.

 188.
He struck out Parke and Hartman, but Russell did not go so quietly. In his final at-bat of a four-year Bailey-Brayton Field career, Russell barreled one through a gap in the infield to get aboard.

 189.
However, Cole Cramer grounded out to make it official as the Cougs lost the game and the series to USC.

 190.
Head coach Nathan Choate was absent all weekend because of non-life-threatening emergency surgery. WSU did not provide a timeline for his return.

 191.
The Cougs head to Eugene, Oregon for the regular season finale. At 9-17, they trail the UW Huskies (10-17 Pac-12) by 0.5 games.

 192.
Wazzu needs to leapfrog UW if it wants a spot in what would be their first (and last traditional) Pac-12 baseball tournament in Scottsdale, Arizona.

 193.
The Ducks (34-16, 16-11) are fourth in the conference, making next weekend’s road trip a tall task.

 194.
WSU will visit Oregon for a three-game series beginning at 6:05 p.m. Thursday.

 212.

Following a season-best offensive performance in the opening game, WSU’s tout with the Trojans of USC, the bats were solid, but not resounding and Conner Wilford’s 6.0 inning, three-earned run performance was spoiled by shaky relief pitching yet again.

 213.
WSU baseball (21-28, 9-17 Pac-12) lost to USC (23-27, 13-12) 9-4 Saturday at Baily-Brayton Field.

 214.
USC second baseman Ryan Jackson lead off the game with a double. He worked his way home off of two straight fielder’s choices, but Wilford drew a flyout to escape the inning, having just conceded one hit and one run.

 215.
Jackson struck again with a one-out single to put a runner in scoring position. Galloway’s RBI single granted the Trojans a 2-0 lead. USC had two runs on three hits through three frames.

 216.
The Cougs, who scored six runs in the second and nine runs in the sixth Friday night, ensured the home field fans were entertained.

 217.
The 1,490-person crowd comprised primarily of high school Future Farmers of America conference goers and player’s families on Senior Weekend, along with summer semester students and Pullman dwellers, were treated to another Cole Cramer ball in play special.

 218.
Facing a new pitcher, Alan Shibley drew a lead-off walk, Crew Parke singled and Max Hartman laid down the perfect bunt to advance Shibley and Parke to scoring position.

 219.
Kyle Russell, riding high at 5 for his last six between Friday’s game and on Saturday’s at-bat, drew a walk to load the bases.

 220.
Cramer did what anyone wants to do in a one-out, bases-loaded scenario, he hit the ball hard, one problem, it was directly to the pitcher. But the ball was so hard hit, it bounced off of the Trojan’s glove bounced into the air and dribbled into shallow right field as if it was a mouse scrambling away from the gleaming tomcat.

 221.
As the ball bounded through the air, the Trojan defense appeared frozen in time. Meanwhile, the Wazzu base runners operated in overdrive, scrambling around the basepaths to even the game 2-2.

 222.
Cramer stole second, but Logan Johnstone stuck out and Joey Kramer grounded out.

 223.
Wilford flowed through the fourth, fifth and sixth, drawing four swinging strikes to hand three straight zeros.

 224.
With Wilford dealing, Hartman backed him up with a lead-off home run in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougs got two more runners on the bases in the fifth, but came up empty-handed, settling for a 3-2 lead.

 225.
Wilford stayed in the game in the seventh, where he allowed a lead-off double.

 226.
Freshman Rylan Haider relieved Wilford, but failed to protect his lead, conceding three singles and a fielder’s choice, allowing his inherited runner to score and soil Wilford’s line while giving up the lead.

 227.
Junior catcher Will Creswell caught a Trojan stealing for the second out of the inning before Haider allowed an RBI double and a two-run home run to sink the Cougars behind 7-3.

 228.
Sophomore Giordano Mezzomo pitched the eighth where he conceded two runs and three hits. Cresswell, having already picked off a runner at second, caught a runner lacking at third, flinging the ball to a waiting Cramer to retire the Trojans in the eighth.

 229.
After playing hero in the top of the inning, Cresswell homered to put a twig-sized scratch on the USC lead. The Cougs trailed 9-4.

 230.
Kevin Haynes pitched a quiet last 1.1 innings, keeping the Trojans scoreless with one hit to his credit, but the Cougar bats were even quieter.

 231.
WSU lost 9-4 to USC, setting up a rubber match on Senior Day.

 232.
After beating Fresno State 4-3, Cramer said a successful rest of the season for the Cougars included a day-by-day approach.

 233.
“Take every pitch one pitch at a time and not look at previous games or future games kind of just take what’s at us and you know kind of just work through the ups and downs,” Cramer said.

 234.
The Cougs have had to handle a lot more downs than ups, but Cramer has proved to be a major cause of the Cougars’ successes, with a team-leading

 235.
“We’re making a couple more mistakes than the other team does and just like in any game, whether it’s a baseball game or basketball, the team that makes the least amount of mistakes when you’re pretty evenly matched typically wins,” head coach Nathan Choate said after WSU lost to Gonzaga April 23.

 236.
WSU faces USC in the rubber match at noon Sunday at Baily-Brayton Field.

 254.

The left side of WSU’s infield had standout performances Friday, finishing a combined 8-for-11 at the plate and driving six combined runs in a 20-run outing overall for the offense.

 255.
WSU baseball (21-27, 9-16 Pac-12) got back in the win column with an emphatic 20-8 win over the USC Trojans (22-27, 12-12) Friday at Bailey-Brayton Field.

 256.
Kyle Russell and Cole Cramer, the shortstop and third baseman duo, each tallied four hits in the win and Russell even took a ball over the fence for his second home run of the season.

 257.
WSU had failed to score double-digit runs just once in the past month, but the team kept believing and Russell said Friday had just been a result of sticking true to the process.

 258.
“Sticking to our process, sticking with our offense,” Russell said.

 259.
Ace Grant Taylor got the Friday nod yet again for the Cougs. He posted a solid start with a final line of 5.0 innings, five runs, seven strikeouts and two walks. Despite not being on his best game — far from it — Taylor pitched well enough to not spoil the offense’s great night.

 260.
“He gives us confidence and we give him confidence,” Russell said. “He’s been lights out all year.”

 261.
After allowing one run in the top of the first, WSU scored in the bottom of the first after Max Hartman led off the inning with a home run and three singles drove in another.

 262.
In the bottom of the second, the first seven batters got on for WSU, scoring four runs. By the end of the inning, the Cougs had touched home six times and took a commanding 8-3 lead. After adding another run in the bottom of the third, WSU’s bat became quiet for two frames.

 263.
But the sixth inning turned out to be their best.

 264.
Three extra-base hits, two walks and three singles later, the Cougs scored nine runs in the inning, all with two outs.

 265.
Scoring nine runs put WSU ahead 18-6. Both teams scored a pair of runs the rest of the way, but it did little to change the outcome of the 20-8 blowout.

 266.
Despite losing by double digits, the Trojans did not play badly. Overall, they hit .395 (17-for-43) and hit .300 (6-for-20) with runners in scoring position; their biggest downfall came from an inability to extend innings.

 267.
With two outs, USC managed just two hits to the Cougs impressive 10 base knocks.

 268.
Winning keeps the postseason alive for the Cougs and winning by 12 makes a statement. The series continues Saturday for the second game.

 286.

Seven different arms took the mound for the Cougs, giving up five runs, nine hits and walking seven different batters in a 5-3 loss to the Portland Pilots Tuesday.

 287.
WSU baseball (20-27, 8-16 Pac-12) continues to lose games on the regular season, while Portland (28-17, 13-5 WCC) beats the Cougs on their home turf in the final non-conference contest on the schedule.

 288.
Despite the loss, Giordano Mezzomo made his debut with WSU after missing last season with an injury, Griffin Myers secured his first collegiate hit in the third inning, Brandham Ponce got a pinch-hit opportunity and hit his first WSU home run and 15 different Cougs tallied at least one plate appearance.

 289.
Spencer Jones made the start for the Cougs. Walking two and giving up one run, his night finished after the first inning.

 290.
Carson Judd got a bulk of the innings, finishing with 3.0 innings and keeping the Pilots of the board. Going into the top of the fifth tied 1-1, Mezzomo entered the game for his debut.

 291.
Mezzomo quickly retired the first two batters he faced, getting two outs on six pitches. He threw 15 more pitches but failed to get out of the inning after walking two batters and giving up an RBI double to Riley McCarthy.

 292.
Between two WSU pitchers, Portland scored four runs and those runs proved enough to take home their 27th victory of the 2024 season.

 293.
Wazzu got one run back in the bottom of the fifth and scored one more on a Joey Kramer single in the bottom of the eighth inning, but a Will Cresswell single in the bottom of the ninth failed to get a rally going.

 294.
Offensively, the Cougs tallied six hits, with each hit coming from a different bat.

 295.
Since their March 22–24 series sweep of Arizona State, the Cougs are just 5-19 and their overall record has gone from an impressive 15-8 to the depths of the Pac-12 at 20-27.

 296.
WSU has a three-game set against USC, starting 6 p.m. Friday and going through Sunday. The Trojans rank fifth in the Conference with a record of 12-11, with the Cougs ranking 10th and on the outside looking in of the tournament at 8-16 and one game back of UW.

 315.

Kyle Manzardo, who played three seasons for the Cougs and was named an All-American as a junior, made his major league debut for the Cleveland Guardians Monday and was in the lineup again Tuesday.

 316.
Batting seventh as the designated hitter, Manzardo did not manage a hit in either of his first two games. He struck out swinging three times in three plate appearances in his debut and struggled again Tuesday, tallying three more strikeouts three times and flying out on his first major league contact.

 317.

318. The Tampa Bay Rays drafted Manzardo in the second round of the 2021 draft and he spent two seasons in that organization before being traded to Cleveland last year. The Guardians’ No. 2 prospect saw success this season with the Columbus Clippers of the Triple-A International League and has been hitting especially well over the last few weeks.

 319.
Manzardo has hit nine home runs for the Clippers this season, with eight of those coming in his last 14 games.

 320.
With roster uncertainty abounding in the major league clubhouse, it was unsure when he would get the call. However, when Gold Glove left fielder Steven Kwan sprained his hamstring and went to the 10-day Injured List, there was no question of who would be called up to replace him.

Manzardo will have a spot in Cleveland for the rest of the season if he starts hitting anything close to what he has shown he is capable of.

 327.
Defensively, the plan is for him to see time at first base and in the outfield. While he is a natural first baseman, the Guardians already have projected All-Star Josh Naylor at the position.

 328.
The outfield is another story, with only the now-injured Kwan being a sure thing at his position. Manzardo has not played outfield as a pro, but if he can provide passable defense in right field he has a shot to be an everyday player out there and at DH.

 350.
Chilton’s departure comes after President Kirk Schulz’s announcement to retire following the 2024–25 school year. Schulz plans to name an interim chancellor for the Pullman campus in the coming weeks, according to a press release from WSU.

 351.
Prior to her appointment of Pullman’s chancellor in January 2022, Chilton joined the WSU community as provost and system-wide executive vice president in May 2020.

 352.
As WSU Pullman’s inaugural chancellor, Chilton has facilitated system-wide budget redesigns and the allocation of $1 million to address faculty salary inequities across WSU’s campuses, according to the Office of the Provost. In addition to establishing structural changes to WSU Pullman, Chilton hired 15 faculty experts on racism and social inequality and founded the Office of Equity and Inclusive Excellence.

 353.
“Dr. Chilton has left her indelible mark on WSU’s evolution as a statewide system — both as a provost and the inaugural chancellor of the WSU Pullman campus,” Schulz said. “I have appreciated her leadership and exhaustive commitment to WSU during the past nearly four years and wish her well.”

 354.
Chilton served as both chancellor and provost in an effort to allow Schulz “to focus on growing and developing the entire WSU system … [and] to broaden the scope of his work while ensuring WSU Pullman maintained dedicated leadership,” according to a WSU press release.

 355.
The roles of chancellor and provost will be separated when T. Chris Riley-Tillman assumes his position as provost July 1. As provost, Riley-Tillman will assist Schulz and the interim chancellor in determining the future of WSU’s administrative structure, according to a WSU press release.

 375.
This study aims to shed light on the controversial drug’s impact, particularly concerning its administration before most races in the United States to mitigate Exercise-Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage. Furosemide has been utilized in racing circles to reduce the prevalence and severity of EIPH, a condition characterized by bleeding in the lungs during intense exercise. Proponents argue for its efficacy in enhancing the welfare of racehorses during competition. However, detractors raise concerns about potential health repercussions and the sport’s public perception, leading to ongoing debates and regulatory considerations.

 376.
Equine medicine professor Warwick Bayly said he expects the study to demonstrate that horses regularly given furosemide before racing typically have more races and longer careers than those without such treatment.

 377.
“These findings are positioned to significantly influence future decisions regarding the use of furosemide in horse racing,” Bayly said.

 378.
The grant, awarded by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, signifies a significant investment in understanding the ramifications of furosemide on equine athletes, he said. HISA, established by Congress in 2020 as a self-regulatory body for thoroughbred racing in the U.S., has been actively evaluating the drug’s impact and considering regulatory measures.

 379.
Bayly said the study involves the analysis of data from approximately 30,000 racehorses. Researchers plan to examine the career trajectories of horses competing between 2011 and 2019, comparing those regularly treated with furosemide against those that were not. The study will explore the effects of banning furosemide on 2-year-old racehorses, comparing pre-ban and post-ban performances to assess any discernible trends.

 380.
“A variety of factors contribute to a horse’s retirement from racing, and numerous elements influence its racing frequency,” said Macarena Sanz, equine medicine associate professor. “The research team, comprising adept statisticians, is working to unravel intricate data to understand the correlation between administering furosemide, the severity of EIPH, and the duration of a racehorse’s career.”

 381.
Additionally, the study will use new techniques, like analyzing videos of racehorses checked at tracks, to see how severe EIPH is and how it affects races for about a year and a half, Sanz said. This research aims to give important information that will help make rules about using furosemide before races in horse racing.
