32.

Road traffic injuries represent about 25% of worldwide injury-related deaths (the leading cause) with an estimated 1.2 million deaths (2004) each year.Automobile accidents are almost as old as automobiles themselves. Early examples include Mary Ward, who became one of the first document automobile fatalities in 1869 in Parsonstown, Ireland, and Henry Bliss, one of the United State’s first pedestrian automobile casualties in 1899 in New York.A car accident or car crash is an incident in which an automobile collides with anything that causes damage to the automobile, including other automobiles, telephone poles, buildings or trees, or in which the driver loses control of the vehicle and damages it in some other way, such as driving into a ditch or rolling over. Sometimes a car accident may also refer to an automobile striking a human or animal. Car crashes — also called road traffic accidents (RTAs), traffic collisions, auto accidents, road accidents, personal injury collisions, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs), — kill an estimated 1.2 million people worldwide each year, and injure about forty times this number (WHO, 2004). In the UK the Department of Transport publish road deaths in each type of vehicle. These statistics are available as “Risk of injury measured by percentage of drivers injured in a two car injury accident.” These statistics show a ten to one ratio of in-vehicle accident deaths between the least safe and most safe models of car.The statistics show[citation needed] that for popular, lightly built cars, occupants have a 6-8% chance of death in a two-car accident. (e.g. BMW 3 series 6%, Subaru Impreza 8%, Honda Accord 6%). Traditional “safety cars” such as the Volvos halve that chance (Volvo 700 4% incidence of death, Volvo 900 3%).The Toyota Land Cruiser SUV has a 6% incidence of occupant death in actual crashes. However, in multiple-vehicle crashes SUVs are not much more lethal than passenger cars.Although, rollovers are much more common in older SUVs as compared to passenger cars because of their top weight. For this reason SUVs actually post a greater threat to rollover and cause a fatality rather than passenger cars. Newer SUVs such as the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 have a lower center of gravity and enhanced stability control programs which lower the risk of rollover substantially.Overall the four best vehicles to be in are the Jaguar XJ series 1%, Mercedes-Benz S-Class / SEC 1%, Land Rover Defender 1% and Land Rover Discovery 1%.[citation needed]Motorcyclist deaths within England and Wales stand at 53% of the annual road death statistics. Scooters/mopeds up to 50cc only account for 3% of those deaths. 2% of the scooter deaths were 16-19 year olds who had not taken CBT (Compulsory Basic Training). (Statistics taken from 2004/2005 DSA annual road deaths percentages)Cars have many basic safety problems – for example, they have human drivers who make mistakes, wheels that lose traction when the braking or turning forces are too high. Some vehicles have a high center of gravity and therefore an increased tendency to roll over. When driven at high speeds, collisions can have serious or even fatal consequence.Early safety research focused on increasing the reliability of brakes and reducing the flammability of fuel systems. For example, modern engine compartments are open at the bottom so that fuel vapors, which are heavier than air, vent to the open air. Brakes are hydraulic and dual circuit so that failures are slow leaks, rather than abrupt cable breaks. Systematic research on crash safety started[citation needed] in 1958 at Ford Motor Company. Since then, most research has focused on absorbing external crash energy with crushable panels and reducing the motion of human bodies in the passenger compartment. This is reflected in most cars produced today.Airbags, a modern component of automobile safetySignificant reductions in death and injury have come from the addition of Safety belts and laws in many countries to require vehicle occupants to wear them. Airbags and specialised child restraint systems have improved on that. Structural changes such as side-impact protection bars in the doors and side panels of the car mitigate the effect of impacts to the side of the vehicle. Many cars now include radar or sonar detectors mounted to the rear of the car to warn the driver if he or she is about to reverse into an obstacle or a pedestrian. Some vehicle manufacturers are producing cars with devices that also measure the proximity to obstacles and other vehicles in front of the car and are using these to apply the brakes when a collision is inevitable. There have also been limited efforts to use heads up displays and thermal imaging technologies similar to those used in military aircraft to provide the driver with a better view of the road at night. There are standard tests for safety in new automobiles, like the EuroNCAP and the US NCAP tests. There are also tests run by organizations such as IIHS and backed by the insurance industry.Despite technological advances, there is still significant loss of life from car accidents: About 40,000 people die every year in the United States, with similar figures in European nations. This figure increases annually in step with rising population and increasing travel if no measures are taken, but the rate per capita and per mile traveled decreases steadily. The death toll is expected to nearly double worldwide by 2020. A much higher number of accidents result in injury or permanent disability. The highest accident figures are reported in China and India. The European Union has a rigid program to cut the death toll in half by 2010, and member states have started implementing measures.Automated control has been seriously proposed and successfully prototyped. Shoulder-belted passengers could tolerate a 32 g emergency stop (reducing the safe inter-vehicle gap 64-fold) if high-speed roads incorporated a steel rail for emergency braking. Both safety modifications of the roadway are thought to be too expensive by most funding authorities, although these modifications could dramatically increase the number of vehicles able to safely use a high-speed highway. This makes clear the often-ignored fact road design and traffic control also play a part in car wrecks; unclear traffic signs, inadequate signal light placing, and poor planning (curved bridge approaches which become icy in winter, for example), also contribute.

  48.

Also referred to as performance marketing, affiliate marketing is a form of performance-based advertising in which a business pays its affiliates based on the actions of a visitor or customer brought to the business through the affiliate’s own marketing efforts. Brands and agencies offer affiliate opportunities to publishers while affiliates sign up to market for advertisers. Below are 20 definitions of relevant terms in the affiliate space.AdvertiserOften referred to as the Merchant, the advertiser is either the company that produces the products or services affiliates promote or the company that brand hired to advertiser for them. Advertisers pay affiliates or networks for delivering traffic that generates a sale or lead for their brand.AffiliateAn individual (or company) who promotes products or services for a merchant in exchange for commission based off the sales and leads acquired. Affiliates are also known as publishers.Affiliate ManagerThe person who manages an affiliate program for a merchant. They are responsible for recruiting publishers, policing affiliate activity and increasing overall sales for the advertiser. An affiliate manager acts as liaison between the affiliate and the merchant; they may work in-house for the advertiser or be an independent service provider (see below: OPM) contracted run their affiliate program.Affiliate NetworkA third-party company that provides affiliate program management services for multiple brands. Affiliate networks have their own pool of affiliates for which they provide the tracking technology to report clicks, sales and leads. They allow advertisers opportunities for more exposure assuming their network includes reputable publishers with quality traffic.Click-through-Rate (CTR)Clicking through refers to the act of someone clicking on an affiliate link and being taken to the merchant’s website. Click-through-rate is a percentage rate that measures the number of times an affiliate link has been clicked on divided the number of times the link has been viewed. That number is then multiplied by 100 to find the percentage rate.Conversion RateConversions are actions successfully completed by a visitor or customer based on the pre-defined point of sale established between advertiser and affiliate. The action could be a click, a credit card submission during a sale, or signing up for an email list. Conversion rates show the number of times your affiliate link has generated a predefined conversion compared to the number of times the link has been viewed displayed as a percentage. Similar to the CTR, conversion rates are calculated by diving the amount of sales a link has generated by the number of impressions the link received and multiplying the result by 100.CookiesA cookie is a small file that is added to a browser by a site or redirector domain, allowing the site to recognize the user when he or she returns. Specific to affiliate marketing, cookies are used as a tracking alternate to pixels. They assign an ID to a user that has clicked on an affiliate link to get to a merchant website for a predefined period. If that user completes a conversion, the affiliate is credited for the sale based off the cookie recognition, regardless of whether or not they completed the sale using the affiliate link on a repeat visit.Cost Per Action (CPA)Cost Per Action, or Cost Per Acquisition, refers to the amount of money paid to obtain a desired outcome such as a completed sale or signup.Cost Per Click (CPC)Cost Per Click refers to the amount of money paid to generate a click by a user on an affiliate link. This is calculate by the number of clicks generated divided by the total campaign cost.Cost Per Thousand (CPM)Cost Per Thousand refers to the amount of money it costs to display an advertisement per 1000 impressions.CreativeA type of graphical ad or text link provided to the affiliate for use in promoting the affiliate program.Earnings Per Click (EPC)Earnings Per Click is the average amount earned every time someone clicks on an affiliate link. To find EPC, divide the amount generated in commissions from an affiliate link and by the total number of clicks that link received. If a campaign generates $2000 through an affiliate link and that that link received 7,000 clicks, the EPC would be $.29.Insertion OrderInsertion orders outline campaign details in addition to the terms and conditions agreement that advertisers and affiliates sign prior to commencing their working relationship. IOs enforce affiliate compliance, specify payout amounts per conversion, define traffic sources allowed and dictate campaign duration.Outsourced Program Manager (OPM)Outsourced Program Managers are third-party account representatives who work independently of an advertiser to find affiliates and ensure campaign success. OPMs are also considered affiliate managers and provide the services an advertiser needs to be profitable through affiliate marketing without having to take on the expense in-house.PixelPixels are HTML codes programmed onto a confirmation page that report sales when a conversion has occurred. There are four main types of pixels: javascript, iframe, image, and postback (or server2server). Each of these pixels is designed to pass customer information back to an advertiser or network based on a successful conversion so that commissions can be paid out accordingly.Tracking LinkAdvertisers provide tracking links to each of their affiliates or networks that includes a unique code specifically assigned to that account. Using this link, advertisers and networks can track the number of conversions acquired by a specific affiliate, allowing them to gage performance.Unique ClickUnique clicks track the number of original (or unique) visitors have clicked on an affiliate link versus seeing the total number of clicks (raw clicks) that have occurred. If someone clicks on an affiliate link 3 times, only one click would be counted. Unique clicks have a cookie persistence of 24 hours so if the same user came back more than a day later and re-clicked the affiliate link, another unique click would track, making it a total of 2 unique clicks and 4 raw clicks for that user.White LabelWhite labeling refers to a merchant allowing an affiliate to sell products under their own brand with no mention of the actual merchant. The advertisements are designed uniquely for the affiliate pushing the offer and often make no mention of the outside merchant. This can improve the conversion rate by convincing consumers that the product or service is solely available from the publisher. Most advertisers merchants limit white labeling opportunities to their top-performing and most trusted affiliates.

  64.

A living will let your doctor know what to do in the event of a medical trauma where it is impossible for them to get an answer from you regarding medical produces and choices to be taken which can affect your chances of survival. Each state has their own specific guideline about a living will and its execution will be implemented according to the laws of each state. If you are interested to create a living will of your own, you need to talk about it to your doctor, your local health department and the hospital near you. Alternatively, you can get a lawyer to create a living will for you. As there are no standardized rules between states, you need to apply for a different living will when you move to another state. You can fill out this form and remember to include any extra wishes you may have on that form. When you are done, sign it and get it witnessed as required by the state legal laws. Once the document is completed, make several copies, give it to your family members, one to your doctor and keep one copy for yourself. Make sure your lawyer has a copy as well. What is the Health Care Power of Attorney?A health care attorney is a person who is responsible to make medical decision on your behalf if you are unable to do it yourself, based on the decisions you have stated in the loving will. The person is often referred as the agent. The agent will be the one responsible to weight the pros and cons of every medical decision and whether a particular treatment should be carried and is relevant to the patient’s wishes in his living will.A living will is an important part of smart living and dying with integrity. The will would service as a guidance to help those around you choose the medical procedures that would help you should an event arise that you are unable to decide for yourself. For instance, you may want to let your heirs know about your desires and choices support system. Perhaps you don’t want to be resuscitated when you go into a cardiac arrest due to some religious reasons. It can be a difficult decision for your family members but when a situation arise, doctors will tend to honor that living will and execute instructions according to the wishes of the affected party stated in his or her living will.We are all governed by different belief systems and priorities that make us unique and give meaning to our existing. Everyone has their own specific set of values and beliefs that takes precedence over everything else around you. A living will help you achieve this goal easily and the document will serve as proof that you have managed and lived according to your highest values and a loyalty to what is most important to you in times of emergency. The decision to create your own living will can be one of the most important decisions you will make in your lifetime, It will help your heirs decide on the best thing to do whenever you are afflicted with a medical condition and are unable to make a decision or yourself. The living will be the ultimate guide that would help doctors determine what should be done when all hopes of recovery has gone and there is a big chance of you becoming incapacitated all your life. Instead of becoming a further burden on your family, you can choose to die with dignity and honor and your living will let you achieve that goal.

  80.

Please Note: When I’m speaking with OH&S Consultants/Experts a common question is often discussed. It is, “How do we get the right behaviours out of the people who work in our organizations… including the Management Team?” The following article is what I often share with them to frame a discussion. Feel free to share these ideas with your peers and just as importantly, with your Management Team. Perhaps we can spark a larger discussion about measuring what really matters in Safety Management and move away from the illogical and impractical method of measuring safety by the lack of injury reports. So here goes… I hope following two part article sparks some ideas!Part One – Expectations & Processes”Where performance is measured, performance improves. Where performance is measured and reported back, the rate of improvement accelerates.” Pearson’s LawSafety management is often out of step with the other parts of our businesses. This can be corrected if we make safety management look MORE like the production of goods and services. The more we can align safety process and measures with other business-like processes the more successful we’ll be in reaching Safety Excellence in our businesses. There’s a huge disconnect in measuring what doesn’t happen to us as proof that something else exists. Experiencing “no injuries recorded during a measured period of time” does not prove the existence of safety. We all know that because we’ve all been unsafe and not been hurt. To make it worse, this measure is historic and doesn’t allow us to do anything about it. So “luck” measures don’t sit very well in business discussions. Frankly they are frustrating. Shifting safety measures away from the traditional “lack of loss” measures to one aligned with how management normally measures their progress towards their goals will help us in significant ways. Let’s look at how.Key Performance Indicators (KPI)Using the classic four functions of management, Planning, Organizing, Leading and Controlling, it’s important to this discussion that “Preventing” isn’t one of the four fundamental management functions.Develop, implement and monitor activities and the resulting outcomes is how most businesses accomplish their management functions. Measures we choose need to be about things a company does to produce an outcome. Who in your organization is planning around making the workplaces safe? That question needs to be answered through “activity” measures. How many planning sessions are held monthly, what is produced at these planning sessions, what initiatives are being implemented? These questions can and do form the kinds of reports your management team is used to seeing. They see them all the time when measuring productivity performance. We need to actually measure the creation of safety to be aligned with other business functions. Most management teams are NOT focused on the prevention of the “lack of profit.”The fundamental two questions, which need to be asked and answered, are:1. What are we doing to create safety (behaviours, culture, environment and accountability)2. What are we getting for those efforts (movement toward the goals)Most businesses set similar types of goals and do similar activities to reach those goals. Raw Numbers, Progress (% Complete) Change towards a target (% Change over last period) are usually seen as reasonable measures to help management manage the process of creating production. These will also work in safety management if we keep in mind that we aren’t here to “prevent injuries”; we are here to “create safety.”Here are some ideas about how to create KPI without the reliance on the use of injury data:1. Identify the top work processes in your organization. These are the primary work processes that are essential to operational efficiency and effectiveness. When performed safely these processes will ensure the organization meets their production goals. Remember, we aren’t preventing, we are CREATING.2. Create a process flow chart of the selected processes. Diagram/list each process from beginning to end. Include all of the employees and management staff who are involved in the successful completion of the selected process. Ensure that the activities to create safety are listed. For example if your tasks include entry into confined spaces you’ll need to list all of the activities (training, equipment checks, work permits, inspections, audits, etc.) that create a safe entry.3. Create a KPI for each step in the process. The KPI measures the completion of the selected activities and the effectiveness of the process. KPIs should be developed that measure quality and quantity. For example: What % of planned equipment checks was performed? Based on a quality measure, how well were they performed?4. Track the KPIs on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis. Learning a bit about Statistical Process Control may be useful. Monitor changes in the KPI to help predict and manage work flow over time.5. Compare the safety creation KPIs with other business KPIs and link these process measures to outcome measure of productivity, quality, and customer satisfaction. (AVOID linking them to injuries or the lack of injuries). Remember we are not preventing, we are CREATING.Nesting Measurable ActivitiesThere is no better way to keep a boss interested in what is happening than holding them accountable for the activities that create the expected results. I call this “nesting safety activities”. Here’s an example:A senior manager I know holds his direct reports responsible to report to him “safety activities” that have created safety on a weekly basis. Some of these reported activities are selected to receive special recognition in the way of a personal phone call to the person (or persons) responsible for the activity. The discussion starts with a personal thank you from the senior leader noting that they are personally appreciative of the employees’ actions to make their place of work a safer place to be. This activity has gone on for years with very positive results. The message is that our safety process is personal, serious and appreciated. The most important part of this example is that the various levels of the organization are involved in doing and measuring safety activities that create safety. They aren’t relying on the lack of injuries to drive their attention to, and interest in, safety management. It’s about catching people doing things right! By the way, this employer has very low injury numbers as a result of their hard work. The best part about that result is they know WHY their injury rates are low!I hope that has helped you rethink how to manage and report your safety progress towards Safety Excellence. Next time we’ll discuss more detailed examples of Nesting Safety Activities.A fitting final thought for Part One of our discussion from a world-class business thought leader:”You can only live life looking forward.” – Warren BuffettPart Two – Making It WorkIn Part One I explored the need to make the management of HSE look more like how we manage the process of creating the production of products and services within our organizations. I believe that aligning these processes makes it easier for everyone to implement the necessary steps to reach safety excellence since they are already used to doing it for the organization. If there’s a common failure in achieving excellence in safety, this is it… “Safety management looks different than the way the organization manages other functions.”If we examine how almost all work gets done in organizations we’ll find that we start with a Mission, Vision, Values and/or Purpose statement of commitment and then go about making those desires happen. How they actually turn into reality is through human activities that are usually set as objectives and measured as they are being implemented. The management of HSE should be absolutely no different. It will take “nested activities” throughout the entire organization to get this done. All levels of the organization, from the CEO to the hourly paid employees, must be engaged in the process exactly like they are engaged to create the products and services the company is trying to create.Responsibility is assigned from the top down and accountability flows from the bottom up. What we are responsible for in an organization is typically communicated through job descriptions and policy and procedure documents. What we are held accountable for is typically clarified through objective setting with our supervisors and our daily discussions and progress reports. Here is the first opportunity to make HSE management look more like how we really manage other functions. The vision needs to be about CREATING not PREVENTING. I’ve written extensively about NOT using the absence of injury as a target. It’s a very poor way to measure the creation of a safe and healthy workplace. If we created safety in our workplaces the logical outcome will be low or no injuries. Our goals need to be in line with production goals. We do not normally measure our success in other areas of production by counting what is NOT produced by our actions. We normally measure what IS produced and how it is being produced. So let’s do that, let’s use what we already know about managing well and apply this to the goal of creating safety excellence.Nested Safety Activities & BehavioursThe key to measuring process and results is to fully understand what is being measured and what activities we are responsible for conducting. Mature safety cultures require this understanding throughout the organization. Each management level understands what their individual activities are and they are measured on those activities to ensure that any “rewards” for good performance are based on them being a part of creating the outcomes. Here’s a sample of how it can work. The CEO is ultimately responsible for the creation of a safe and healthy work environment at their company. Activities that they can be held accountable for can include:• Ensuring that all of the direct report VPs have properly budgeted for safety and health within their operating budgets• Ensuring that the importance of safety and health creating activities is documented in all job descriptions and performance appraisal systems to a significant weighting (example 25% of at risk pay compensation package).• Ensure that the importance of safety and health in the company’s activities is communicated from the senior management level through personal communications and company events with employees.Of course these are only examples of what can be done but the key is to weigh heavily on the activities that create safety and not the results. When properly selected, activity measures will drive positive outcomes. If not, then different activities need to be conducted. There is a direct cause and effect relationship with creating safety and having very low negative outcome numbers (injuries, related costs, equipment damage, etc.). Logically if we are working safely then undesired negative outcomes (injures, damage and resulting costs) should be the results of creating safety. What is best about this logical approach that the confidence will be high that we created the results and that they didn’t just happen as a result of being lucky.Moving down through the organization, the direct reporting positions to the CEO now have to nest their activities to support the accomplishment of the CEO. These activities can directly make the CEOs activities happen within their area of responsibility or create their own specific safety and health related activity that will be further supported by their own direct reports (Manager, Directors, and Supervisors). For example:• Ensure that safety and health creating activities are properly budgeted for (sufficient time for the activities and sufficient financial support for compliance and improvements) in their area of responsibility including training, committee meetings.• Ensure that three employee safety and health “town hall” employee events are scheduled annually with attendance of the CEO and presentations about the progress of safety and health creating activities• Ensure that workplace tours are conducted quarterly emphasizing the importance of creating safety and health through management and employee observed activities. This nesting of activities, if continued throughout the organization, will drive the creation of safety and health in any organization because it makes it important enough to do by demonstrating that it is being measured. In addition, a boss cannot meet their goals without the support of their subordinate’s activities being completed. This is an exact parallel to the way organizations create the productions of goods and services. Through the nesting of objectives and activities from the front line worker up through to the CEO, people are all “intradependant” on each other to ensure their common goals are met.Working down through the organization, further nesting of activities will include activities such as first line supervisors becoming responsible and measured on the number of “ride alongs” they do with their drivers observing their safe behaviours and discussing the importance of the safe and healthy creation of the products and services. We can have front line workers be responsible for doing inspections of their work tools and ensuring that broken tools are repaired and/or replaced. If we want to create companies that do their work in safe and healthy ways, we need to measure that the people doing the work to create the products and services are doing their jobs that way. The “lack of injury measures” does not accomplish this. What really measures safety is observing the way in which we do our work. I hope that gives you some ideas on how this can work in your organization. I’ll leave you with one of my favourite quotes about motivation by Aubrey C. Daniels”People do what they do because of what happens when they do it.”

  96.

From body scrubs to cellulite treatments, caffeine is being introduced to spa goers and at home beauty product consumers at a rapidly increasing rate. While ingesting caffeine is still catching a bad rap, topical use as part of one’s skin care regimen allows the caffeine to do more than just provide a quick jolt of energy.Caffeine’s antioxidant properties are high on the list of reasons spa and beauty companies are making use of this well known ingredient. A study from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that one serving of coffee provide more anti oxidants that most fruits. The same study also found that caffeine serves as an anti-inflammatory as well.Producers of anti-aging products are making use of caffeine in their under eye treatments. Primarily, caffeine constricts blood vessels, which in the eye area lends to the reduction of swelling. Additionally, its anti-oxidant properties help reduce the redness that is common with puffy eyes. While the affects are known to be temporary in this case, regular use of these products will lead of the overall appearance of clear, more youthful skin.Around the globe, women are spending thousands of dollars on spa treatments that incorporate ground coffee as a main ingredient, seeking out smooth, flawless skin. The actual coffee grounds perform dual roles in spa treatments. Externally, ground coffee is an excellent, yet gentle exfoliant for the body and face. Whether used alone or in combination with sugar or sea salts and other organic ingredients, coffee is a vital element to top of the line body and facial scrubs. The grounds as well as caffeine infusions are also being used in spa and on the shelf cellulite treatments as the caffeine lending to the constriction of varicose veins making them smaller; therefore, reducing their appearance. Caffeine’s ability to dehydrate and redistribute fat cells leads to smoother, less dimpled skin.Beauty manufactures are also capitalizing on other effects that the inclusion of coffee and caffeine in their product can have on the consumer. From an aromatherapy perspective, the aroma of coffee unconsciously induces perky moods, and uplifted spirits, getting women up and motivated. Because caffeine constricts blood vessels this also plays a part in overall heart health, decreasing the chances for heart disease. These benefits serve as a bonus to the consumer and increase the quality and value of the products making it a win-win situation for manufactures.Consumers are always strongly encouraged to read their product labels and have an understanding of what the ingredients in their skin care product do. Keeping an eye out for products containing caffeine at spa visits and in their health and beauty shopping will allow them to select products more consciously to serve their skin care needs.

  112.

Gone are the days of high temperatures and even higher humidity. Beautiful Fall weather is now approaching and many of us are eager to get outside and enjoy the cooler temperatures. This makes it the perfect time to talk about the subject of exercise. Exercise should definitely be included as part of a healthy, well-rounded self-care program. Exercise has many great health benefits. Not only does it boost endorphins (these are the body’s “feel good” hormones) which improve your mood, it also raises your energy level, reduces stress, detoxes your body, burns calories to help you maintain a healthy weight and helps you sleep. For many of us, due to busy days and hectic schedules, exercise has fallen to the bottom of our priorities list. Lifestyles have become more sedentary than in past generations as we go from sitting behind a desk and computer to sitting in our vehicle in traffic to collapsing on the sofa in front of the television when we get home; so incorporating exercise into our daily routine has now become more important than ever. Even just a little exercise can go a long way in helping you stay more balanced, healthy and happy. A recent study even showed that small movements such as chopping vegetables and squirming contribute positivity to a person’s overall fitness level! You can begin by incorporating exercise into your day in small doses… try parking farther from your office building, take the stairs instead of the elevator to your floor, take a relaxing walk at lunchtime or schedule a walk with a friend and catch up at the same time. Small changes can really add up over time and will make a big impact on your overall health and level of fitness. As you move forward, begin to set aside 30 minutes, 3 times per week to exercise and schedule it on your calendar. Instead of making exercise feel like a difficult chore, try doing something you really love to do like dance, a group exercise class or sport. Keep things interesting by incorporating different types of exercise into your routine instead of doing the same thing each time. For instance, take a yoga class one day, bike one day with your family and walk one day with a friend. To help your body remain flexible and strong, be sure to include some stretching as well as strength training in your exercise routine.

  129.

Having the correct software simplifies work in multiple ways, especially, when it comes to complex functions such as sales and support. These functions require management of large volume of data, simultaneously. It is for this reason that a call center too can benefit hugely from customer service and support software.Extending quality customer service and support is vital to a business’ growth and expansion. A good service function can ensure a loyal and satisfied customer following and good brand recall. Customer service and support is often regarded as a sales function, but if gauged well, it can branch out to do miracles for the marketing function as well. There are essentially four types of customer care software that you can use in your call center. Each comes with its own set of advantages. It is purely up to you and your business’ needs as to which one you want to adopt into your business. Here are the Four Kinds of Commonly Used Customer Support Software:Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)This is one of the most basic kinds software that a call center could not do without. It serves the main purpose of calling, handling, and receiving calls. The software uses the internet to make phone calls cheaper, reliable and more effective. It works with compatible soft phones and hard phones and uses a Private Branch Exchange (PBX) to conduct the same. It has now become the platform of choice for most call centers, as against the traditional phone system. Here are some of the common features of VoIP software:PBX
130. Mobile access
131. Automatic call distribution
132. Conference and video calling
133. Auto dialer
134. Call management
135. Call metric trackingCustomer Relationship Management (CRM)The CRM is the database companies and call centers cannot do without. This database contains all the client information which helps companies to provide directed and personalized marketing and sales efforts to their customers. It also helps companies ensure a steady and long term relationship with their customers. CRM when integrated with the right solutions can open to you a world of information and analytics. The software essentially can track and record data about customer activities, their web behavior and service requests among other functions. Following are the features that CRM software is designed to provide:Contact/customer management
136. Sales forecasting
137. Task management
138. Performance management
139. Workflow automation
140. Lead management
141. Partner management
142. Collaboration tools
143. Reporting and other analytics
144. GamificationGamification is introducing game concepts of reward points, level progressions and badges, which make normal routine work seem more motivating. Call center employees have to deal with many different types of customers on an everyday basis. Most of the customers are often disgruntled who want quick fixes for their issues. Handling such irate clients over phone calls is not an easy task and thus leads to high rates of employee disengagement. Good gamification platforms provide for easy integration with your CRM processes thus letting you build games with your existing workflow items and KPIs.HelpdeskHelpdesk software helps in automation of service management. It helps record and process large volumes of requests without letting quality issues creep in. The integrated helpdesk software lets managers and administrators track and measures important KPIs. There are a variety of helpdesk solutions to choose from in the market starting from basic product troubleshooting, to HR helpdesk, and IT support. Here are some of the features you can expect in helpdesk software:CRM integration
145. Reporting
146. Analytics
147. Telephony integration
148. Knowledge base
149. Ticket management
150. IM support
151. Community forumsNow that we have an idea of the various types of software available in the market to boost the efficiency levels of your call center, let us quickly take a look at the basic benefits you can expect from them.Ease of reportingCustomer service software helps makes reporting and flow of information easier in call centers. The automation of the reporting process helps cut down time on taking important decisions and handling other supervisory needs. With good software, management will always have information on their fingertips to make quick and informed decisions.Evaluation of employeesIn large call centers where there are a multitude of employees working, it might become difficult to manage and monitor the achievements of each and every employee. Therefore, it becomes difficult to reward and recognize the efforts of high-performing employees. With the proper customer support software, with gamification features, management can easily use metrics to find their star performers and reward them.Identifying opportunities and challengesWith the proper software in place, management can identify the volume of calls and the topics they are dedicated to. This can help them find out about topics that are currently of interest to the customers and can be used to generate fresh leads and also for customer engagement. It also helps them find areas of improvement without doing much research. They can also use the software metrics to see high-cost areas are call-points that are lagging to fix such issues and increase call turnarounds. With the right customer service and support software, you can do more than just run a successful call center. The right software is your key to successful business.

  166.

We’ve all heard myths and urban legends about Big Foot, tested illogical home remedies like using hot water to make ice cubes faster and have made conservative choices on Friday the 13th, but how many of us have missed out on a travel adventure due to the fear caused by a few travel rumors? Here are some of the biggest urban legends in travel and the facts that debunk them.Myth 1: Americans Are The Worst TouristsAre Americans really the world’s worst tourists?American’s rank 9th best out of 27 nationalities, according to an annual survey of hotel managers. The truth is Americans were ranked the loudest but also the biggest tippers.Myth 2: Once You Step Onboard Your Money Is No GoodThe truth is that your soda, meals, waters in the dining hall and buffets are paid for, everything else costs including alcohol, alternative dining, internet access and more. The fact is an average cruise traveler spend 50% more than the base fare on additional amenities.Myth 3: Rule 240 = Money BackIf your flight is delayed, the urban legend states that Rule 240 requires the airline to compensate you. This is not exactly true, the rule 240 did at one time exist. It was created by the Civil Aeronautics Board. With deregulation though, Rule 240 has been expunged.Myth 4: Bottled Water Is Your New BFFAt least 25% of bottles water is simply tap water. So if you are weary of Montezuma’s Revenge while abroad, know that there’s a 25% chance the brand you buy will simply be local tap water anyway.Myth 5: Your Hotel Key Card Knows More About You Than You!This again is also not true, your hotel key card doesn’t know everything about you. This rumor was started by Detective Sergeant Kathryn Jorge of the Pasadena Police. She saw a presentation about fraud techniques indicating this as a possibility, and sent an alarming email in response. The police department had to retract the statements of DS Jorge to quell fears.Myth 6: There’s Money In That BibleThis is another myth which people want to be true, the myth is that people believe that there is a crisp $100 tucked into their hotel Bible. But till date there are no reports of such generosity.Possibly, all of these myths depends on the mode of your travel, like many cruise lines don’t include soda in their inclusive meal price so you need to pay for your soda every time you buy it or you might want to go for a soda card plan. Other than that I wish I found that money in the Bible or anywhere in my hotel room, but my bad luck.

  181.

What are payday loans?Payday loans are short-term loans that are extended between two pay days. A payday loan is normally provided for 14 days. The borrower, on acceptance of the loan conditions, provides a check favoring the lender as security against the loan. On the due date, the lender deposits this check to recover the loan dues. The due date is generally the next pay day of the borrower. No credit checks are conducted for granting payday loans. Therefore, the FICO score of the borrower is irrelevant. It doesn’t matter whether the borrower has a bad credit history, or has no credit history, or has declared bankruptcy.Qualifications for payday loansTo qualify for a payday loan, the borrower needs to fulfill all of the following conditions. There are no exceptions.o You must be a US citizen.o You must at least 18 years of age.o You must be at a full time job currently and must be at this job for at least three months.o You must either have an active checking account or a savings account.o Your after tax salary should be at least $ 1,000 or you must have a fixed income of $800.Cost of payday loansPayday loans carry a very high cost. Generally the lender fees for a $ 100 payday loan is anywhere between $15 and $25. It should be remembered that this fee is for 14 days as the loan itself is extended for these many days only. If one considers the cost on an annual percentage rate (APR) basis, the average is 391%, which by any standard is exorbitant. By law, it is mandatory for the lender to specify the APR to the borrower. Many lenders do compare the cost of payday loan against other forms of financing; but the common denominator of such a comparison is that all of them are very expensive. When to avail of payday loans?Payday loans should be availed only during emergencies. Considering the fact that the cost of carrying a payday loan is very high, it should be a resource of last resort. If one implements good budgeting techniques and has a good financial plan, the need for borrowing by way of payday loans can be minimized. Moreover, one must ensure that a payday loan is paid on time. Payday loans should not be rolled over or extended as within no time the borrower will find himself or herself in a debt trap where money may have to be borrowed just to repay the interest.Profile of a payday loan borrowero A typical payday loan customer is between 25 and 40 years of age with an annual income anywhere between $ 25,000 and $ 50,000.o According to the US Census report of Year 2000, the results of the payday loan borrowers survey are:22% of those surveyed hold a bachelor’s degree.51% of those surveyed have a retirement savings plan.In excess of two-thirds of those surveyed have a savings account.More than two-thirds of those surveyed have an annual income of at least $ 25,555.Why are Payday loans popular? They are popular for a number of reasons such as:o Credit checks are not required. The personal check that you make payable to the lender acts as security.o Approval is quick. If all the necessary documents are submitted, your loan application maybe approved in minutes.o The paperwork involved is simple. Generally one or two documents would suffice which explains the loan process and your obligations.o The repayment process is without hassles. The check submitted as security is encashed on the next payday by the lender. You could extend the loan to subsequent paydays for a fee. However this is very expensive.o Easy availability. Payday loans are particularly appropriate for emergency situations provided the amount required is small and one is willing to bear the high cost of the loan.In summary, payday loans might be a viable option if you need cash and need it fast. You still should be careful who you are working with to obtain your loan. If you don’t need money right away, there is probably a better solution for you.

  196.

Wherever it might be roof top gardeners are a breed apart. With space at a premium I’ve seen meadows growing in eaves and roses trailing into the sky. In the most exposed spaces I’ve seen mature trees thriving and come across orchards and allotments in sheltered city gardens. Its never easy growing up in the sky but you’ll be amazed what can be achieved with a little planning and a close understanding of what you have got to deal with. It’s harder than gardening on a ground level but boy is it more inspirational!Over half of new homes being built today are apartments so roof gardens and terraces are becoming more and more popular and vital to the green environment. If you think it’s too much effort and need a financial motive then research tells us that a great roof space, smallest balcony or terrace can add 8% to the sales price of a house and 25% to the turnover of a restaurant! In this article I’d like to just show you where we started creating roof gardens because many people believe it’s quite a modern phenomenon. The hanging gardens of Babylon were probably the most famous roof gardens of all time. One of the Seven Wonders of the World probably constructed during the rebuilding of Babylon by Nebuchadrezzar II to console his wife Amytis who missed the greenery of her homeland, Media. We only have mention of the gardens from writings made 200 years after their destruction probably by Xerxes I around 482BC. It is described as having lofty stone terraces, closely reproduced mountain scenery with planting to create the mountain surroundings of Media. Siculus (Greek historian 1st Century AD) describes them as being 100 feet long by 100 feet wide and built in tiers to resemble a theatre. Vaults carried the weight of the plants with the highest at 70 feet. Gardening on a grand scale but still with a mind for weight limits! The next significant point in roof gardens were the Roman roof gardens of Pompei. We don’t know much about them but the eruption of Mount Versuvius in AD 79 preserved almost perfectly a building with what we would define as roof garden terraces. The Villa of the Mysteries just outside the northwest gate of Pompei has a U shaped terrace along its north western and southern perimeters where plants were planted directly into soil. The terrace is supported by a colonnade on all three sides. This became a tomb for those escaping the falling ash. By careful excavation including pouring plaster into the root spaces the plants that were used have been identified. There are other gardens of the middles ages such as those at Mont-Saint-Michel in France, The Medeci garden at Careggi in Italy and the Aztec City of Tenochtitlan razed by Cortes in 1521. One of the most notable roof gardens of the 17th and 18th Centuries was the Kremlin Place in Moscow, razed in 1773 to make way for the Kremlin we know today. Gardens were a great luxury for the Russian nobility and in the 17th century an extensive two level hanging garden was installed with an amazing 10 acres on the upper level with two terraces descending almost to the edge of the Moscow River. Again built on vaults, surrounded by stone walls and featuring a 90 square metre pond supplied by water lifted from the river. The lower garden was built in 1681 with another pond. Plants were in boxes with an emphasis on trees, shrubs and vines with paintings giving an illusion of visually expanding the space. From the turn of the 20th Century one of the most successful movements and where the term roof garden was coined were for the theatre roof gardens of the US in places such as the American Theatre in New York City seen here. The New York conductor Rudpolph Aronson built the first having been inspired by the theatres of Paris and the high cost of land! The Casino Theatre he built was the first to specifically include a stage on the roof for Summer performances. The most imaginative garden theatre was Oscar Hammerstein’s Olympia Music Hall built in 1895 completely enclosed in glass with a constant stream of water pumped to the outer edge of the roof to cool visitors and mask the sound of the street. Even then they were still using the rocky mountainside look and included simulated lakes with live swans gliding along the surface. The introduction of air conditioning and changing tastes meant these theatres closed down in the 1920s and one by one were demolished. Now two gardens built before World War II have inspired roof garden designers over the years and continue to do so. These are the Derry & Toms garden in Kensington and The Rockefeller Garden in New York. Some would also say the Union Square garden in San Francisco is influential and indeed this has recently been re-designed to much praise. The Derry & Toms roof garden opened in 1938 as part of the famous department store. It hosted events with nobility and royalty until the store went out of business in 1978. Now part of the House of Fraser group it was restored and has a new lease of life. The original garden had more than 500 trees and shrubs. This has declined as poor maintenance, age and drought have taken their toll and the planting has been simplified but is still a great example of what you can grow. There are three principal areas of Spanish gardens, Tudor gardens and English Woodland. The garden has been greatly changed for modern requirements of elevators etc. and the once prolific summer bedding replaced with lawns. Some of the Rockefeller Centre buildings were designed by the same architect as Derry & Toms – Ralph Hancock. He was also a fellow of the RHS. The gardens are much simpler though with central parterres of lawn, trimmed hedges of privet, fountains and ponds just 2 inches deep. These were completed just before the Derry & Toms gardens. More elaborate Mediterranean gardens were designed by the chief horticulturalist for the site. What is most impressive is that 3000 tons of topsoil was brought up in the elevators! From the early days of gardens designed for individuals and as public spaces roof gardens are now springing up everywhere and an apartment without its own outdoor space is rare. But we owe our smart London roof gardens to a long history of innovators leading the way to greening our cities.
