44.
Following a recent gas explosion in the Ajeromi/Ifelodun area of Lagos that resulted in fatalities, the state House of Assembly has called on concerned ministries, departments and agencies of government to step up enforcement of safety laws to protect lives and property.

 45.
The House, at plenary presided over by Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa on Monday, tasked two ministries – Physical Planning and Urban Development as well as Special Duties – to up their responsibilities to ensure that lives are protected against sales of combustible substances in residential areas.

 46.
The House frowned against the proliferation of gas shops across the state and asked the Lagos State Safety Agency not to compromise on enforcement of laws regulating the activities of such outlets, a statement by Eromosele Ebhomele, Chief Press Secretary to the Speaker, said.

 47.
A recent gas explosion had led to the death of 15 residents with at least 35 others sustaining injuries according to their representative at the Lagos Assembly, Hon. Sabur Oluwa (Ajeromi Ifelodun 2).

 48.
The House urged the government to support the victims in the form of relief materials.

 49.
Before the lawmakers observed a minute silence for the victims of the explosion, Speaker Obasa sympathised with the affected constituents and emphasised the need to address the issue.

 50.
He acknowledged that gas regulation falls under the ‘exclusive list’, but urged the state to find a way around it to prevent further tragedies.

 51.
“Having gas shops and outlets within the community without proper regulations must be looked into. It calls for concern and we must look for a way out,” Dr. Obasa said as he directed the Clerk, Barr. Olalekan Onafeko, to communicate the resolution of the House to the appropriate authorities.

 52.
Meanwhile, the Assembly has commended the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and the Gbagada General Hospital for their swift handling of emergency cases brought to the facilities.

 53.
Hon. Desmond Elliot (Surulere 1) said he witnessed how medical personnel at the two hospitals battled to save the lives of fire accident victims recently.

 54.
“Our health sector should be commended,” he said while acknowledging the collaboration between arms of government resulting in elevated healthcare standards in the state.

 55.
“The commitment and dedication I witnessed in the handling of fire victims at LASUTH and the Gbagada General Hospital are encouraging, reflecting a system where all hands were indeed on deck.

 56.
“When I got to the wards, I met over nine doctors and nurses attending to the victims at the LASUTH. I saw the same thing at the Gbagada General hospital,” he said.

 57.
Speaker Obasa, who emphasised the role of the legislative body in recognising and supporting such commendable endeavours, added: “This is exactly what the House is expected to do at all times.

 58.
“We will always commend the MDAs for a job well-done, and anywhere they falter, we will always point such out.”

 59.
He, thereafter, directed the Clerk to forward letters of commendation to the management of LASUTH, Gbagada General Hospital and the Commissioner of Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi.

 79.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency trading platform, Richard Teng, has claimed that some unknown persons sought a bribe of cryptocurrency from its executives, Tigran Gambaryan and Nadeem Anjarwalla, before their detention on February 28, 2024.

 80.
Teng made the claim in a blog post on Monday, detailing how the Binance executives tried to engage with Nigerian authorities, including a January 8 meeting in Abuja, before they were accused of criminal acts.

 81.
He said the meeting was set up with the Nigeria government through a committee consisting of about “30 agencies.”

 82.

 83.
He noted that the committee emphasized the serious nature of the meeting and their readiness to issue arrest warrants and restrict travel for Binance’s team.

 84.
However, it was discovered that the committee lacks the actual authority to issue arrest warrants.

 85.
The meeting was later postponed to January 11, 2024, Teng said.

 86.
The CEO stated that on the same day, January 8, some unknown persons approached their employees seeking bribes in cryptocurrency to “make the issues go away”.

 87.

 88.

 89.

“As our employees were leaving the venue, they were approached by unknown persons who suggested to them to make a payment in settlement of the allegations.

 90.

 91.

 92.

“Later that day, our local counsel — representing us at that time — was summoned by the committee through someone purporting to be their agent, who relayed the committee’s terms and instructed our local counsel to advise us.

 93.

 94.

 95.

“Counsel reported back that he had been presented with a demand for a significant payment in cryptocurrency to be paid in secret within 48 hours to make these issues go away and that our decision was expected by the morning.

 96.

 97.

 98.

“Our team grew increasingly concerned about their safety in Nigeria and immediately departed. We, of course, declined the payment demand via our counsel, not viewing it to be a legitimate settlement offer,” Teng said.

 99.

 100.

 101.
Meeting with ONSA

 102.
Following the incident, the Binance CEO said their executives were then invited to meet with the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), a move Binance believed would help resolve the issues diplomatically.

 103.
Meanwhile, Teng said the meeting was supposed to be a diplomatic effort to resolve issues, noting that the Nigerian government gave “multiple assurances that they would be granted safe passage for their meetings.”

 104.
Teng said the meeting was scheduled for “February 26, 2024, at 2 pm at ONSA’s offices in Abuja.”

 105.

 106.
“In their first meeting, they met with leaders from ONSA, the office of the President, the Central Bank, NFIU, EFCC, and the SEC.”

 107.

 108.
He said after the meeting, the executives, Gambaryan and Anjarwalla, were told to wait outside shortly, only to be summoned back by the officials two hours later.

 109.

 110.
“After waiting more than two hours, the Binance employees were invited back into a meeting room albeit with different attendees than the ones announced — specifically, there were four members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

 111.
“The leader of the group took on a hostile approach. He said that the issues involving Binance were of national security,” he wrote.

 112.

 113.
According to him, this led to the arrest and detention of the two executives.

 164.
The two-year savings bond maturing on May 15, 2026, is to be offered at an interest rate of 17.407% per annum.

 165.
The three-year savings bond with a maturity date of May 15, 2027, features an interest rate of 18.407% per annum.

 166.
These interest rates represent the highest ever offered by the DMO on FGN Savings Bonds, as the country moves in the direction of a further rate hike.

 167.
The subscription for these bonds began on May 6, 2024, and will continue until May 10, 2024, as per an announcement made by the DMO. Settlement is scheduled for May 15, 2024, with quarterly coupon payment dates set for August 15, November 15, February 15, and May 15.

 168.
Recommended reading: DMO to sell N2.5 trillion FGN bond to retail investors

 169.
Rising interest rates

 170.
In recent months, Nigeria has witnessed a significant surge in interest rates on government securities, reaching as high as 19%.

 171.

 172.
This sharp increase aligns with the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), reflecting the Central Bank of Nigeria’s (CBN) hawkish stance aimed at curbing the inflationary pressures that have besieged the economy.

 173.
By tightening monetary policy, the CBN intends to withdraw excess money from circulation, hoping to stabilize rising consumer prices.

 174.
However, this approach carries a substantial fiscal burden. As the government implements measures to cool inflation, the cost of borrowing, particularly in the short term, escalates.

 175.
This scenario poses a considerable challenge for future debt management and fiscal sustainability.

 176.
Recent data illustrates this predicament starkly: Nigeria’s debt from Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) Savings Bonds has more than doubled in just five years, ballooning from approximately N16.4 trillion in 2019 to N39.1 trillion in 2023.

 177.

 178.
The FGN Savings Bonds, primarily targeted at retail investors, have become a critical tool in the government’s debt strategy.

 179.
What you should know

 180.
Tailored for retail investors, these FGN savings bonds assure quarterly interest payments along with the repayment of the principal amount upon maturity.

 181.

 182.
Saving bonds are offered at N1,000 per unit, with a minimum subscription of N5,000 and multiples of N1,000 thereafter, up to a maximum subscription of N50 million.

 183.
These savings bonds, like other government securities, are backed by the full faith and credit of the federal government and charged upon the general assets of Nigeria.

 184.
They also qualify as securities in which trustees can invest under the Trustees Investment Act.

 185.
Moreover, they qualify as government securities within the meaning of the Company Income Tax Act and Personal Income Tax Act for tax exemption and pension funds, among other investors.

 186.
Additionally, the bonds are listed on the Nigerian Exchange Limited (NGX) and qualify as a liquid asset for liquidity ratio calculation for banks.

 206.
Multichoice’s lawyer, M.J. Onibanjo (SAN) told the CCPT via his application on Tuesday that it should decline jurisdiction on the suit filed by Festus Onifade because such a price dispute case had been decided before in favor of his client.

 207.
In his motion on notice seen by Nairametrics, Onibanjo argued that while Onifade is seeking to regulate prices of the services provided by Multichoice, the Tribunal, not being the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria lacks the jurisdiction to regulate prices of goods and services under the FCCPA 2018.

 228.
The duo of Maduka Okoye and Isaac Success hosted Victor Osimhen and Napoli in Udine.

 229.
It was a case of the Nigerian contingent taking centre stage as Victor Osimhen and Isaac Success traded blows for Napoli and Udinese respectively in an entertaining 1-1 draw in Udine.

 230.
Osimhen opened the scoring for the Serie A leaders with a towering first-half header but refused to celebrate against compatriot and friend Maduka Okoye in the Udinese goal.

 231.
However, fellow Nigerian, Success had the final say, coming off the bench to deny Osimhen and Napoli all three points with a last-gasp equaliser deep into stoppage time.

 232.
The clash was a showcase of Nigerian talent on both sides, with Osimhen leading the line for the visitors before Success’ heroics for the hosts.
233.

 234.
Okoye also played his part with some smart saves, ensuring the game ended in a stalemate between the contingent of Super Eagles stars.

 235.
Osimhen broke the deadlock in typical fashion, outmuscling his marker to power home a bullet header and bag his 15th goal of the campaign.
236.

 237.
But the former Lille man opted against celebrating out of respect for his compatriot Okoye, who was beaten by the brilliant effort before his Napoli teammates swamped around him.

 238.
Napoli looked to be closing in on a crucial win before Success intervened two minutes into injury time, firing home from close range to spark scenes of delirium.
239.

 240.
The Udinese supersub, unlike his fellow countryman, celebrated his timely equaliser for the home side.

 241.
While Osimhen will be disappointed to have dropped more points, his goal continued an incredible scoring run but not enough to give the former champions all three points.
242.

 243.
On the other end, Okoye’s strong performance will have been a big positive, showing he can match teammates Osimhen and Success at the highest level.

 244.
The result leaves Napoli still eighth on the table, but now five points behind the last European spot currently held by Lazio.
245.

 246.
But with such a wealth of Nigerian talent in their ranks, Napoli will back themselves to get over the line after a poor season.

 305.
Many believed the singer’s post was directed at his estranged wife. Recall that Harrysong tied the knot with Alexer in March 2022. The couple share two daughters, Daviva, who was born in 2021, and Purity, who was born in December 2022.

 306.
Early this year, the couple’s marriage hit the rock after a leaked chat exposed their marital crisis, revealing how Harrysong threatened to stop taking care of his wife if she failed to abort her pregnancy, and informed her that he wouldn’t be responsible for the child since his wife had abandoned his grandmother.

 307.
Things got heated between the two and his wife, Alexer had questioned if the girls they are pimping to him are better than her, and surprisingly, the singer stated that they are better than her as he went on to compliment his side chicks.

 308.
After the news broke out of his alleged marital crisis, Harrysong came clean about it, as he admitted that it’s a challenging time for the couple and appealed to the public to respect their privacy and to be understandable.

 309.
Opening up on their marital crisis in an interview, Alexer revealed how the singer told her he married her out of pity. She claimed that he repeatedly cheated on her and she had treated several infections while with him because of his infidelity. Alexer further alleged that Harrysong was also assaulting her.

 310.
Sadly, in March, Alexer announced the loss of pregnancy in an Instagram post where she expressed how heartbroken she was that her little one had to go through it.

 311.
She revealed that she was in so much pain as she voiced out to God, expressing how tired she was.
