We’re so excited to have more than 10,000 people linking arms with us and giving more than 200,000 hours of service. With that goal in mind, Analyst Stephanie Walker and her team worked to educate and inspire teachers and administrators with the District’s inaugural Zero-Waste Initiative email series.</p> <span id="more-45420"></span> <p>Over the course of two months, the Energy and Sustainability team shared four in-depth digital newsletters with HISD campuses. The newsletters covered topics like sustainability in schools, waste production, food waste, and how to become good environmental stewards through circularity, or the life cycle of the products we use. Each communication was packed with relevant information curated by Energy and Sustainability in partnership with the Children’s Environmental Literacy Foundation and the National Wildlife Foundation, among others.</p> <p>“The initiation of the zero-waste program at HISD was inspired by the District’s commitment to environmental stewardship,” Walker said. “We aim to achieve several key goals throughout this initiative, including reducing the amount of waste sent to the landfills, minimizing the District’s environmental footprint, and educating students and staff about the importance of waste reduction. Our goal is to instill that culture of environmental awareness and responsibility while making a positive impact on the local and global environment.”</p> <p>Through the Zero-Waste Initiative, Energy and Sustainability plans to reduce—and someday eliminate—waste at its source in HISD schools by increasing reusable options for commonly wasted materials and implementing recycling and composting programs on campuses. The bedrock of this initiative is education. As such, beginning with a pilot of 20 campuses, Walker’s team is hosting workshops and training sessions to give teachers the resources to instill in their students a foundation of sustainability awareness and best practices that they can use at school and in their homes.</p> <p>Tricon Energy, Lyondellbasell, and Exxon Mobil are participating as partners in the initiative. During school visits, representatives share their perspectives with student conservationists and explain the work their companies are doing to help build a more sustainable future world.</p> <p>Walker is looking to expand the pilot program to all HISD campuses and eventually package it for other school districts nationwide.</p> <p>“The Zero Waste Initiative is moving into year two and the early success is pleasing,” HISD Energy and Sustainability Director Kirby Williams said. “We have a lot of work ahead of us to accomplish our goals. I feel we’re off to a great start and having the support of the academic staff and leadership has been helpful.”</p> <p>Walker anticipates 20 to 40 more campuses will participate in the Zero-Waste Initiative in the coming school year. As the program grows, her team hopes to see a shift in the waste habits of HISD students and staff that will lead the District to recycle most of the waste it currently generates in the forms of food, plastic, e-waste, and paper goods. If successful, this will help reduce waste-removal costs for the District, allowing those funds to be used for other purposes. The parade is a treasured community tradition and the culmination of months of hard, creative work each year. Students at participating schools collaborated during their art classes and after-school time to construct their unique Art Cars. The morning of the parade, students gathered to showcase their creations alongside vehicles designed and built by scores of other artists from across the city. The event welcomes participants from all over and attracts an audience of more than 250,000 spectators. HISD students conceptualize and build their Art Cars using donated vehicles and plaster, papier mâché, reclaimed materials, and other creative means. The idea is for students and teachers to let their imaginations run wild, and then craft a car that embodies the group’s collective vision.</p> <p>Parker Elementary School created an Art Car for the parade in 2020, but the event was canceled due to the pandemic. This time around, Parker art teacher Julie Dickinson was considering a car with a floral theme, to represent the school’s on-campus garden. She changed her mind after a conversation with one of her colleagues, Leslie Hokanson, who suggested building a car inspired by Parker alum and NASA astronaut Shannon Walker.</p> <p>Designing and building the space-themed car was a team effort, with Parker’s fourth and fifth graders painting a galaxy design on the truck, and younger students using plaster sheets to make planets for the solar system. A Parker parent created a model space shuttle out of plywood for the top of the vehicle, and students painted themselves inside its windows. As the finishing touch, a fifth grader drew a picture of astronaut Walker at the very front.</p> <p>“Projects like Art Car have tremendous value in the lives of all people, but especially our young learners,” Dickinson said. “When students participate in these community events, they develop a greater sense of pride in themselves, their schools, and their immediate community. They learn to concentrate and pay attention to details. Art is a part of everything. It is naturally cross curricular. Students use math, science, social studies, and reading every day in art class. This particular Art Car experience increased student knowledge about our solar system, three dimensional shapes, and states of matter.”</p> <p>Dickinson tried not to get her hopes up when contacting NASA to see if Shannon Walker would participate in the parade.To the Parker team’s delight, however, Walker agreed to ride in the bed of “The Galactic Walker,” joining her painted miniature on the plywood shuttle and Parker’s lion mascot emblazoned on the sun across the truck’s grille.</p> <p>HISD Secondary Visual Arts Coordinator Chandel Hancock says the Art Car Parade helps students connect to their campus, their community, and themselves through “creativity, collaboration, and problem solving.”</p> <p>“These are traits needed for future success personally and professionally,” she said. “Students experience the highest levels of learning through participating in one of Houston’s most anticipated events.”</p> <p>Hancock, with HISD Visual Arts Curriculum Designer Rickey Polidore, oversees the Art Car season for the district each year. Polidore, himself an accomplished <a href="https://houstonlanding.org/art-car-artist-hisd-teacher-rickey-polidore-gave-us-an-exclusive-look-at-his-winning-creations/">Cartist</a>, has been participating in the parade for more than a decade. </p> <p>HISD honorees at this year’s event include Ortiz Middle School, which received the Rockstar Rookie Award for first-time participants. And Carnegie Vanguard High School got the Hard Luck Award for persevering through an unfortunate mishap on parade day. Houston landed just outside of the path of totality, giving students the opportunity to witness the moon’s 94% obfuscation of the sun using special kits provided by Space Center Houston and delivered by a real NASA astronaut. </p> <style>[data-ps-embed-type=slideshow] > iframe {position: absolute;top: 0;left: 0;}</style><div style="position:relative;height:0 !important;padding-bottom: 75% !important;width:100% !important;" data-ps-embed-type="slideshow" data-ps-embed-gid="G0000IQq_2AUdw_g"></div><script src="https://houstonisdphotos.photoshelter.com/js/psEmbed.js"></script><script>_psEmbed("https://houstonisdphotos.photoshelter.com");</script> <span id="more-45404"></span> <p>Astronaut and Space Center Houston Chief Science Officer Megan MacArthur surprised students at Anderson and Bonham Elementary Schools, Sugar Grove Academy, and Westbury High School where she and her team delivered “eclipse in a box” kits. The kits, designed by MacArthur, included glasses for safe eclipse viewing, an educational guide to help students learn about this rare occurrence, and shadow cards to make crescent-shaped shadows that only occur during a solar eclipse.</p> <p>“The kids were able to ask a lot of questions and prepare themselves for what an eclipse really is, and they were excited about it,” said Anderson Elementary Principal Erica Tran. “I think [things like this] open up their interests to astronomy and gets them excited about science and space. Astronaut MacArthur coming out was eye-opening for the girls in particular, seeing that there was a lady astronaut, that she’s real. It opens their minds more than seeing the same thing every day.”</p> <p>The purpose of Space Center Houston’s visits was to inspire students and deepen their interest in space science through practical exposure.</p> <p>“This is a unique opportunity to really understand something that happens on such a large scale that it can be hard to picture,” said MacArthur. “This is a way to help them realize their place in the solar system and the universe.”</p> <p>The cloudy weather mercifully let up long enough for HISD students to be able to go outside to watch the eclipse during the school day. Using their eclipse glasses, Anderson Elementary students gathered on the blacktop of their campus Spark Park and watched the moon pass across the sun, dropping the temperature and plunging the city into shadow.</p> <p>“This eclipse is special because it’s going to be a total eclipse,” said Anderson Elementary fourth grader Isayah Figuroa, who spent much of his time outside lying on the blacktop and watching the moon’s journey across the sun in real time. “The next one isn’t going to happen for 20 years!”</p> <p>HISD partners with NASA several times a year on many different projects and initiatives to fuel students’ passion for STEM and space science. In the upcoming 2024-2025 school year, the minimum salary for a Special Education teacher will be $80,000. At New Education System (NES) campuses, that number will be $86,000.</p> <span id="more-45390"></span> <p>Previously, HISD Special Education teacher salaries fell on the standard pay scale for K-12 teachers plus a $1,000 stipend.</p> <p>“HISD is steadfastly committed to ensuring our students with special needs are identified, supported, and positioned to achieve at high levels,” said Billy Solomon, Executive Director of Talent Acquisition. “That is our responsibility. HISD’s Chef Brittany Jones and registered dietitians Gabby Villarreal and Nathan Raska are in the process of visiting every class at Berry and providing students a fun and educational cooking demonstration and nutrition lecture.</p> <style>[data-ps-embed-type=slideshow] > iframe {position: absolute;top: 0;left: 0;}</style><div style="position:relative;height:0 !important;padding-bottom: 75% !important;width:100% !important;" data-ps-embed-type="slideshow" data-ps-embed-gid="G0000xlXYiE190gs"></div><script src="https://houstonisdphotos.photoshelter.com/js/psEmbed.js"></script><script>_psEmbed("https://houstonisdphotos.photoshelter.com");</script> <span id="more-45382"></span> <p>Each classroom takeover includes an hour-long visit from Jones, Villarreal, or Raska where they walk students through the steps of a simple recipe they can try at home, including bok choy noodle crisp salad, pizza-flavored popcorn, and chocolate brownies made from beets.</p> <p>“Meeting the kids where they’re at is both fun for us and easier for the schools, for the teachers, because they don’t have to do anything,” said Raska, who walked second graders through a recipe for pizza popcorn using only cooked popcorn, parmesan cheese, oregano, and sundried tomato oil. “We come in and take over, and it’s such an enriching opportunity for the kids. It gives them a break from the day-to-day rigor of the classroom, and they get to have a little fun and a little bit of passive learning in the process.”</p> <p>Raska’s lesson included introducing students to each component of the snack they would be making while practicing food etiquette and experiencing their food using all five senses. Students were asked to smell the popcorn, feel the texture of the added spices, and listen to its crunch as they chewed. In collaboration with Human Resources, the Transportation Services Department will host a <strong>Transportation Job Fair</strong> on <strong>Wednesday, March 27, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.</strong> at the <strong>Northwest Motor Pool </strong>complex (6351 Pinemont Drive, 77092).</p> <span id="more-45378"></span> <p>HISD bus drivers earn a starting hourly wage of $18 (with a guaranteed minimum of six hours per day) and can earn $500 extra per month for perfect attendance through May. Employees will receive free CDL training as applicable.
