As we head into another corporate made-up holiday for May 4th, know that there is at least one significant, non-annual, and lesser-discussed Star Wars thing to celebrate in 2024 – 25 years of Lego Star Wars.
The success of Lego Star Wars can’t really be understated. In video gaming, we know it as the brand combination that led to oodles of video games – but it charted a new course for Lego at large, too. It’s the single most successful piece of Lego franchise licensing, but is also undoubtedly the brand that cracked the door open for other brands. With Lego’s interest piqued, the toy behemoth has recreated everything from Batman to Horizon Zero Dawn in its iconic bricks – but it all began with Star Wars.
Part of the triumph of Lego Star Wars is really the breadth of its appeal. This is shared with regular Lego – there’s city sets of police stations and hospitals for kids, but also <a href="https://www.vg247.com/best-lego-set-of-2023">supremely detailed fully-featured buildings </a>for the bigger kids. Lego Star Wars has long followed this template, serving up cutesy play sets ranging from a tenner or so up to larger ‘Christmas present’ tier toys – and then more expensive sets for adults who really should know better.
I count myself among those people, by the way. I should know better, but I don’t, and that’s why I own quite a few ‘Ultimate Collector Series’ sets – the big sets for big boys and girls willing to leave a big hole in their bank accounts.
The UCS kits are meant to create display pieces, and have typically been absolutely massive. The poster child for the set in my mind is and remains the now-discontinued 10221 Super Star Destroyer, which when constructed resulted in a model over 4 feet long and pushing 4kg in weight. It’s frankly obscene, but also rather cool. Even the smaller UCS offerings are nothing to sniff at – a new UCS TIE Interceptor launches this month, celebrating 25 years with a sizable set that’s composed of almost 2000 pieces.

These sets are big, though. And expensive. And, honestly, what I’ve realized is that I just want good representations of classic Star Wars ships and locations that I can display – and I’d rather display more, smaller sets than one gigantic thing. This is why my UCS A-Wing and X-Wing found their way into my attic, demoted from a shelf here in my office.
Lego appears to have cottoned on to that fact, and in recent years have been revising down the size of some of their adult sets. Those big sets are still releasing, but… there’s a middle ground. And that middle ground? Reader, it’s the best.
Take the Millenium Falcon. The big UCS Falcon (<a href="https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/millennium-falcon-75192">set 75192</a>) is over £700, a whopping 7500 pieces, and frankly obscene in size. Much of that piece count is spent on interior details that spark joy while building, but then never get looked at again. If you wanted something more reasonably priced the only other option was the playset, designed for kids and, well, play. Play features make it less sturdy, less accurate to the screen prop, less of a display piece, and a less interesting build.
Lego has finally addressed this with a new 18+ targeted Millenium Falcon (<a href="https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/millennium-falcon-75375">set 75375</a>) – a building kit designed to give you a compact, gorgeous looking replica of the Falcon complete with a little name plaque and a stand – but for almost 10% of the price of its big brother. Interestingly, I actually think smaller scales can sometimes lead to a better looking and more representative offering – I think this looks the most like the Falcon out of the three available sets. It’s small enough to sit on a desktop or a shelf. And the price is right.

The Falcon isn’t alone – there’s also similar-design sets of the <a href="https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/executor-super-star-destroyer-75356">Executor Super Star Destroyer</a> (that’s Vader’s big flagship, for those who don’t keep track of the names), and the <a href="https://www.lego.com/en-gb/product/tantive-iv-75376">Tantive 4</a>, Bail Organa’s ‘diplomatic’ ship. This is the start of a series, clearly – and I’m here for it.
I could see myself with a whole range of these. In fact, seeing the Falcon, I can feel my desire to buy absolutely any other large-scale Lego UCS set evaporating like an oasis under the twin suns of Tatooine. Why would I have these massive sets when I can get a very similar level of joy, for a fraction of the price, out of something smaller?
It’s not just limited to ships, either – while not under the UCS branding, Lego has also released a range of Diorama sets that capture individual scenes from the movies – so far limited only to episodes 1, 4, 5, and 6 – but I can see this becoming a truly compelling and collectible range over the years.
Sometimes, it’s clear, less is more. That might mean that Lego sells less ridiculous sets for £200, £300, even £700 – but the result of offering something a little smaller is great for customers. Lego Star Wars might be getting up there in years – but here, its 25th year shows signs of being its strongest yet.

Square Enix has announced it will “recognize extraordinary losses” during its fiscal year report ending March 2024, as it pertains to several canceled games.
For the fiscal year 2024, the firm will report a $140 million loss due to this content abandonment.
<a href="https://www.hd.square-enix.com/eng/ir/pdf/20240430_01_en.pdf">According to Square</a>, during a meeting on March 27, the Board voted to revise the company’s approach to developing high-definition games. The result will find the firm acting more selective and focused on allocating development resources.
As a result of a close examination of the development pipeline undertaken in keeping with this revised approach, the company expects to recognize the loss on its books. Square also said it is carefully reviewing its consolidated forecasts for the fiscal year to assess the potential for impact from the above or other factors.
In its Q1 fiscal year 2023/2024 report, released in August 2023, the company noted a sales increase in its HD Games sector, however, it stated that Final Fantasy 16 sales didn’t meet expectations with 3 million copies sold, attributing the lackluster sales to slow adoption of PlayStation 5 consoles.
Adding a bit of injury is Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, which, according to Daniel Ahmad, director of research and insights at Niko Partners, <a href="https://gamerant.com/final-fantasy-7-rebirth-sales-underperforming-report/">has underperformed sales-wise</a>.
Square Enix will release its full earnings for the year ending March 31, 2024, on May 13.

Featuring single-player and online multiplayer, you will engage in high-speed 3D battles when stepping into an arena that reacts to your every action. As you transform or unleash your attacks, the environment will respond with realism as you leave a trail of destruction in your wake.
The first entry in the series since 2007’s Budokai Tenkaichi 3 on PlayStation 2, the game promises to stay true to both the anime and video game series.

<a href="https://www.vg247.com/games/sea-of-thieves">Sea of Thieves</a> is now available on PlayStation 5 as a digital download and supports cross-play between PC, PlayStation, Steam, and Xbox.
The release coincides with the launch of <a href="https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/season-12-launch">Season 12</a>, a free update to players across all platforms, and it brings a host of game-changing features.

The central focus of Season 12 is expanding the tools at your disposal so you can always be the type of pirate you want to be, no matter what that looks like. To make that happen, Rare focuses on combat this season. For the first time since launch, two new weapons have been added to your Armoury, offering new alternatives for approaching the likes of skeletons, Sirens, Ocean Crawlers, and, of course, enemy crews.
Season 12 expands your arsenal with the Double Barrel Pistol and Throwing Knives. Additionally, you can use two new tools, summoning friendly skeletons to fight on your behalf with the Bone Caller or command the wind with the Horn of Fair Winds.
All these new additions are accompanied by other changes to gameplay including the installation of ziplines for island traversal, and the Horn of Fair Winds – an artifact that provides perks from filling your sails and boosting swimming speed to rebuffing enemies and putting out fires.
As always, the latest update also adds new cosmetics. The latest season brings a new Plunder Pass to unlock the myth-inspired Gorgon ship collection, Headband, and two-stage Stone Curse.
There’s also the Checkmate ship set, weapons, and clothing, the Sting Tide collection from a previous Plunder Pass has returned to the game. Finally, owls have been added a pet to the game and you have the choice of five from a Barn Owl to a Black Banded Owl.
With ziplines, the expanding land-based travel options, and owls arriving for purchase in the Pirate Emporium, Season 12 sounds like a fun season on the seas.
Originally released in 2018, Sea of Thieves, the game features plenty of content updates including crossover stories such as<a href="https://www.seaofthieves.com/a-pirates-life"> A Pirate’s Life</a> and<a href="https://www.vg247.com/sea-of-thieves-the-legend-of-monkey-island-crossover"> The Legend of Monkey Island</a>, on-demand PVP and <a href="https://www.vg247.com/sea-of-thieves-next-update-anti-cheat-safer-seas-changes">Safer Seas</a>, and tools such as harpoons, fishing poles, and more. It’s rather popular too with over <a href="https://www.seaofthieves.com/news/40-million-players">40 million players</a>.

You know it’s almost time for a new <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-beginners-guide-builds-maps-and-tips-for-new-players">Diablo 4</a> season because Blizzard is starting to line up <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-post-ptr-early-season-4-livestream-details">developer livestreams</a> and publish hefty blog posts about the new content, of which there doesn’t seem to be much this time around.
The game’s Season 4 has been officially named Loot Reborn, which ties into the fact the upcoming season will introduce the game’s largest loot overhaul since launch. Blizzard plays into this more than you might think in the season’s blurb, which is a bit worrying.

Season 4: Loot Reborn kicks off Tuesday, May 14 as promised. It goes live at 10am PT, 1pm ET, 6pm UK, alongside a new battle pass, and a fresh season journey – just like every previous season.
The seasonal theme this time around isn’t <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-season-1-start-date-gameplay-story-details">Malignancy</a>, cool and exciting <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-season-of-blood-s2-everything-you-need-to-know">Vampiric Powers</a>, or even the underwhelming mechanical <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-season-of-the-construct-all-details">Seneschal automatons</a>. No, the theme is just… better loot. If you’ve not been keeping up with Diablo 4 news, you may be a little confused.
A couple of weeks ago, Diablo 4 hosted its <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-ptr-schedule-details-character-boosts">first-ever (Public Test Realm) PTR</a>, which included <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-season-4-delay-ptr-date-big-loot-overhaul-details">a host of gameplay changes so vast and wide-reaching</a> that Blizzard delayed the new season by a month to allow for enough time to test and gather feedback. All of those loot and itemisation tweaks were always intended to arrive for everyone in Season 4, but the assumption was that those (very welcome) tweaks would be one part of the season, not the entire point of it.
It appears, however, the loot overhaul is Season 4’s entire schtick. Blizzard has now confirmed that the upcoming season is named Loot Reborn. The developer spent so little on story and themes in the <a href="https://news.blizzard.com/en-us/diablo4/24077223/galvanize-your-legend-in-season-4-loot-reborn">announce blog post</a>, in fact, that you may not realise it’s for a new season at all.

The closest thing we have to new narrative content is the return of the Iron Wolves, the famed mercenary company from Diablo 2 and 3. The existence of the Iron Wolves <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-season-4-leak-iron-wolves-datamine-seasonal-theme">was actually datamined during the PTR’s run</a>, but everyone assumed there’s going to be more to it than simply seeing them in Diablo 4.
The new Season 4 NPC is Soudeh the Anvil, who will be guiding you through a quest to investigate the mysterious circumstances surrounding the deaths of members of the Iron Wolves. As revealed in the datamine, participating in Iron Wolves activities and the quest itself earns you favor, which is Season 4’s new XP label.
The seasonal quest also ties into the larger focus on better loot, as some of your rewards will include Tempering Manuals for use with the weapons and gear you’ll find. Interestingly, Iron Wolf events – which you’ll find in Helltides – will continue after the end of the season, indicating that the Iron Wolves may stick around and become part of the larger game going forward.
And that’s it! The rest of the blog posts reiterates the new crafting systems, itemisation changes, and more rewarding Helltide events. There’s nothing new here for anyone who took part in the test, or is even aware of it.
There’s still a chance <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-post-ptr-early-season-4-livestream-details">tomorrow’s developer update livestream</a> will bring us more details on Season 4 that aren’t in this blog post, and we certainly hope there’s more to it than just helping out the Iron Wolves and enjoying the improved loot mechanics, especially after <a href="https://www.vg247.com/diablo-4-season-of-the-construct-review">the underwhelming Season 3</a>.

Following <a href="https://www.vg247.com/games/helldivers-2">Helldivers 2</a>‘s latest patch, players have suddenly found themselves being <a href="https://www.vg247.com/helldivers-2-latest-update-under-fire-for-ricochet-changes-players-cant-stop-shooting-themselves">insta-killed by their own ordinance on a regular basis</a>, something that they’d no doubt find quite funny if they weren’t, you know, trying to score victories for Super Earth.
While a change to ricochets that came as part of <a href="https://www.vg247.com/helldivers-2-next-patch-24-weapons-stratagems-tweaked">this latest patch</a> – which also featured a pretty extensive array of balancing changes to weapons – was originally thought by many players to be behind this spike in self-shootings, Arrowhead’s now revealed the actual cause.

In a post on the game’s official Discord server, community manager Spitz outlined that the studio has found the issue to actually stem from rogue shrapnel being kicked out by shots from the Eruptor – something a few investigative players had theorised might be the case.
“In response to a previous post on reddit, we looked into the possibility of rockets and other explosives being affected by ricochets,” the community manager wrote, “This has since been debunked by the community, but nonetheless, our Ministry of Defense team also ran a number of tests today and confirmed that rockets and explosives are not ricocheting.”
“However, we have noticed another issue through these posts and community feedback that has identified the possibility for shots from the R-36 Eruptor to explode and rebound shrapnel at the shooter, which has a high enough damage value to instantly kill the player,” they continued. So, what’s Arrowhead planning to do to make the gun less effective in terms of killing its wielder? The answer looks like it’ll be getting rid of the Erutor’s shrapnel effect, while boosting its hit damage in order to try and maintain its viablility as a weapon that, you know, can kill things that aren’t you.
“It should maintain its destructive power, and as it is still classed as explosive, it will not lose the ability to break objects, close holes, destroy fabricators, etc,” Spitz wrote, “This will, overall, be a buff to the weapon as the random shrapnel played an almost negligible part in the damage and power it dealt. It will still deal both impact and AOE damage, and both of these damage values will be increased to make it just as powerful, and more consistent.”
If you’re curious what the overall situation in terms of ricochets should be in the game, so you can look out for and report anything that’s out of the ordinary, the community manager also provided some infor on that. Basically, as of writing, “only small arms should be able to ricochet on armour”. “If you see an explosive VFX at the point of impact, the projectile is not causing a ricochet, as explosion effects are not triggered when a ricochet occurs,” Spitz explained, “Shrapnel, however, can still explode outwards from the point of impact and kill the player.”
So, there you go. No blaming ricochets next time you accidentally blow yourself up with <a href="https://www.vg247.com/helldivers-2-latest-major-order-forces-players-choose-between-weapons-rocket-launcher-winning-early">your new rocket launcher</a>.

My Adventures with Superman is back later this month, and it’s looking set to introduce a couple of classic comic characters.

 
Adult Swim dropped a brand new trailer for My Adventures with Superman yesterday (easily the best on-screen version of the iconic hero we’ve had in many, many years), giving us a look at everything we can expect from season 2. It wasn’t actually that long ago that we saw Clark Kent, Lois Lane, and Jimmy Olsen, as the show wrapped up back in September, but as confirmed in the recent trailer, the show will be back on our screens May 25. The first two episodes will be premiering on Adult Swim on that date, but if you can’t catch them live, you’ll be happy to hear that they’ll be available the very next day on Warner Bros.’ streaming service Max.

As expected of Superman, it looks like he’ll be doing plenty more punching, flying, and whizzing around the place to save the people of Metropolis and those he cares about. Quite notably in the trailer, season 2 also sees the arrival of the villain who is easily Superman’s number one nemesis, though in this case their rivalry is just beginning – Lex Luthor. You might not recognise him at first because he has hair, but I’m sure in time they’ll make that boy bald, it’s practically his destiny.

Judging by the trailer, Luthor isn’t the only one set to join season 2, as the very end of the teaser trailer does also tease Kara Zor-El, aka Supergirl, Superman’s cousin. How that will factor into the overall plot remains to be seen, as it was more of a last-second trailer tease than anything else, but it will likely stir things up a bit for Clark who’s still getting used to his life as Superman.

The Legend of Zelda movie director Wes Ball has said he’s aiming for something a little more “grounded” with his adaptation than he first envisioned a decade ago.

 
Now, admittedly, right off the bat when I saw Wes Ball, the guy behind the soon-to-be-released Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, say that he wants his Zelda move to be more “grounded” and “real” alarm bells went off in my head. You’re telling me you want the series where its protagonist, Link, has been a furry, a painting, and a Deku scrub, to be grounded? But this is why it’s important to read on a touch, as that’s not exactly what he’s getting at. Ball recently spoke in a brief interview with <a href="https://www.polygon.com/24145926/zelda-movie-director-wes-ball-grounded-style">Polygon</a>, where he was asked about his more than a decade old <a href="https://twitter.com/wesball/status/8362170683">tweet about a hypothetical Zelda film</a>, in which he said “Since I could never even hope to have the chance to direct it… the next big mo-cap Avatar-like movie should be… THE LEGEND OF ZELDA.”

Bear in mind, this was literally a month after the original Avatar released, so it’s no surprise it was on his mind. These days, though, Ball is singing a different tune, saying that a completely motion-capture Zelda film “probably isn’t his choice.” He then went on to say he wanted the film to be more “grounded” and “real” so it more sounds like he doesn’t want a bunch of CGI elf-like people wandering around green-screen sets. I’m hoping that means he’s leaning more towards practical effects, a bit of a dying artform in a post-MCU world.

 
Ball went on to say that the team developing the film is “working hard, and we’re gonna make something great,” continuing on to joke that if he said anything else “Nintendo will pop out of the bushes here and like yank me away.” It’s also sounding like he got his motion-capture fix with his Apes film, which is due out next week, May 9. “Like Avatar, and unlike the other previous Apes movies, there’s about 30 or 40 minutes of full CG in this movie. Like every leaf, every piece of bark, you know, full CG. So I got to have a little taste of that Avatar experience, where it’s just actors on a mocap stage pretending with all this crazy boxes and proxies for objects. That was really fun.”

 
Funnily enough, Ball also recently said that there’ll essentially be a <a href="https://www.vg247.com/kingdom-of-the-planet-of-the-apes-physical-release-no-apes-cut">motion-capture-less cut of the film on the physical release</a>, where it will show all of the film’s raw dailies.

While the likes of <a href="https://www.vg247.com/games/fallout-4">Fallout 4</a> and <a href="https://www.vg247.com/games/fallout-76">Fallout 76</a> are all well and good, <a href="https://www.vg247.com/fallout-amazon-second-most-watched-show-ever">after enjoying Amazon’s Fallout TV show</a>, a lot of us have been left craving a fresh Fallout experience – or even a new remake – to sink our teeth into.
To its credit, while <a href="https://www.vg247.com/fallout-4-next-gen-update-runs-into-pretty-big-problem-on-ps5-bethesda-working-on-it">Fallout 4’s next-gen update has fallen a bit flat</a>, <a href="https://www.vg247.com/bethesda-trying-find-ways-to-up-output-todd-howard">Bethesda does at least seem to be aware of the desire for it to do a bit more with the series</a>. Though, until it can find a way to up its output, mods will continue to provide plenty of Fallout stuff to look forward to in between entries – with one interesting project looking set to release its first demo this summer.

Fallout: Vault 13 is, as you might have gleaned from the name, a modding project dedicated to remaking the very first <a href="https://www.vg247.com/games/fallout">Fallout</a> game using Fallout 4’s engine – seemigly in a pretty similar vein to the likes of <a href="https://twitter.com/Project_F4NV">Fallout 4 New Vegas</a> (no prizes for guessing what that one’s all about either). Following the release of a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ibk6r8-sHO8&t=1s">Shady Sands showcase video</a> back in 2022, the project’s team has been <a href="https://twitter.com/FalloutVault13/status/1712239625413021904">working on a playable demo</a>, and has just provided a fresh update on it.
“We know it’s been a little quiet on our end recently, and we’re thrilled to break that silence today with some exciting news about Fallout: Vault 13,” the group tweeted, “Our demo is nearly there, and we are at about 90% completion by our estimates! The final touches are being applied as we speak.”
Explaining that Fallout 4’s next-gen update and the various key framework mod reworks it’s necessitated has given them some extra work to do, the modders said: “While we can’t give an exact release date today, we feel confident enough to say that you‘ll be able to play the demo this summer!”

“The overall excitement within the modding community has been palpable, especially with the upcoming release from our friends over at <a href="https://www.vg247.com/games/fallout-london">Fallout: London</a>,” they added, “We believe that this summer could be one of the most thrilling seasons for the Fallout modding community in a long time.”
While, as with all fan projects, I’d generally reccommend keeping your expectations for this one tempered, rather than going in expecting the world, if you like the idea of a modern take on <a href="https://www.vg247.com/hear-me-out-after-the-fallout-tv-show-i-dont-want-a-new-fallout-fps-im-fiending-for-a-top-down-rpg">classic Fallout</a>, that demo defintely sounds like something worth keeping an eye out for as we get into the summer months. Yes, the year is dribbling away that quickly.
While Bethesda’s commitment to quality is admirable, it might want to try and avoid repeating what’s happened with Fallout 4’s next-gen update, especially on PC, <a href="https://www.vg247.com/fallout-4-mods-popular-get-rid-next-gen-update">where mods that get rid of it have gotten quite popular</a>.

Margot Robbie might be more focused on her work as a producer right now, but it looks like she’s finding some time for her next role too.

 
As reported by <a href="https://variety.com/2024/film/news/warner-bros-avengelyne-margot-robbie-olivia-wilde-1235987192/">Variety</a>, Robbie is apparently currently looking to star in an upcoming adaptation of Avengelyne, a ’90s co-created by Cathy Christian and Rob Liefeld, the latter of which being the co-creator of the iconic Marvel anti-hero Deadpool. Robbie, if she joins the film, would be taking on the lead role of the titular character, a fallen angel that can use her blood as a weapon or miracle through quoting Bible verses. Yes, this does very much sound like a ’90s comic, complete with an oversexualised design, though I’m sure a film version will shape up a bit differently.

Warner Bros. is also apparently close to finalising a seven-figure film rights deal, with Don’t Worry Darling director and Tron: Legacy actor Olivia Wilde on directorial duties, and Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Logan) as producer. Poor Things screenwriter Tony McNamara is also attached to pen the script. In a statement provided to Variety, Liefeld said, “This incredibly humbling journey to bring Avengelyne to life onscreen started through my relationship with super-producer Simon Kinberg who told me he had a perfect fit for the material and asked me to trust him.

 
“Next thing I’m meeting with Margot Robbie and Olivia Wilde and the connection was electric! They told me that they wanted Tony McNamara to write it, and after a pair of meetings Tony is onboard and things could not be more exciting. It’s all a result of Margot, Olivia and Simon working their magic to assemble this incredible team of creatives, all intent on creating a cinematic experience like no other!”

 
Robbie’s company LuckyChap is also attached to the project, which also happens to be developing the upcoming <a href="https://www.vg247.com/barbie-star-margot-robbie-producing-live-action-the-sims-movie">Sims</a> and <a href="https://www.vg247.com/margot-robbie-to-produce-monopoly-movie">Monopoly</a> movies, both of which the Barbie actress is currently working on as a producer.
