  56. <p>Sundown on Monday will mark the beginning of Yom Ha’Atzmaut when mourning will turn to joy as Israelis celebrate what they’ve held so dearly for 76 years now – Divinely-appointed independence foretold 2,500 years ago.</p>
  57. <blockquote><p>Isaiah 66:8<br />
  58. Who has heard such a thing?<br />
  59. Who has seen such things?<br />
  60. Shall the earth be made to give birth in one day?<br />
  61. Or shall a nation be born at once?</p></blockquote>
  62. <p>After dedicating the solemn day of Yom HaZikaron to remember those who have gone before them, Israelis will celebrate their 76th year of independence as a nation on Yom Ha’Atzmaut. Independence Day was strategically placed after Memorial Day in recognition of the reality that without the brave sacrifice of so many Jewish men and women in Israel’s history, there would be no independence.</p>
  63. <p>1948 marked the rebirth of the nation of Israel when the Jewish people declared independence in their homeland in the aftermath of World War II. Their independence was made official on May 14, 1948, with the signing of the Declaration of Independence in Tel Aviv. However, Yom Ha’Atzmaut is not recognized annually on that date, but rather, it is celebrated on the third of Iyar on the Jewish calendar.</p>
  64. <p>It was only a matter of hours before five different Arab nations acted on a mutual interest of eradicating the name of Israel from the face of the earth after the nation was born on May 14, 1948. Jordan, Egypt, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon all attacked the Jewish State the very next day, which is known as the Arab-Israeli war of 1948. God’s hand in the deliverance and survival of the Jewish people is a story like no other. Miracle after miracle took place, whether it be the Lord instilling fear in the heart of their enemies or His miraculous intervention when soldiers were in a seemingly irredeemable situation.</p>

  66. They have taken crafty counsel against Your people,<br />
  67. And consulted together against Your sheltered ones.<br />
  68. They have said, “Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation,<br />
  69. That the name of Israel may be remembered no more.”</p></blockquote>
  70. <p>Tragically, this same evil spirit is alive and well today. Independence Day will be observed in the midst of political and wartime turmoil following the October 7, 2023, massacre, which was carried out by Hamas terrorists from the Gaza Strip. On the morning of October 7, numerous terrorists infiltrated the country determined to kidnap, rape, and slaughter as many Jews as possible. Sadly, they were successful, as over 1,200 innocent Jews – men, women, elderly, and children – suffered the very fate(s) previously listed. It goes without saying that the heartbeat of this year’s Independence Day is going to be different than that of previous years, especially given the reality that the Israel-Hamas War remains ongoing.</p>
  71. <p>From Holocaust survivors to a radiant, thriving nation, Israel now has one of the leading economies and militaries in the world. Israel’s population today is over 9 million people.</p>

  114. <p>Sunday evening will mark the beginning of Israel’s Memorial Day, or Yom HaZikaron, observance. Yom HaZikaron is a day of remembrance for the Jewish State’s fallen soldiers, veterans, and victims of terrorism. Approximately 25,000 Israeli soldiers have died since the nation was reborn in 1948, with numerous others being injured. Well over 3,000 Israelis have been killed from acts of terror as well.</p>
  115. <p>Most recently, over 600 IDF soldiers have been killed in Israel’s war in Gaza and at least a few thousand more have been injured. Not to mention this war began as a result of the October 7 massacre wherein Hamas militants breached the border with Israel and mutilated, raped, and slaughtered over 1,200 Israelis beginning in the early hours of the day. Needless to say, Memorial Day in Israel in 2024 will be met with a host of pain and sorrow as the people reflect on the loss(s) of their loved ones.</p>
  116. <p>Historically, some of Israel’s major battles/wars include The War of Independence (1947-1949), The Sinai Campaign (Operation Kadesh – 1956), The Six-Day War (June 1967), The War of Attrition (1968-1970), The Yom Kippur War (1973), The Lebanon War: Operation Peace for Galilee (1982), The Gulf War (1991), The Second Lebanon War (2006), and The Israel-Hamas War (2023-present) in addition to several other military confrontations.</p>
  117. <p>At 8:00 PM Israel Time on Sunday, a one-minute siren will initiate the beginning of Yom HaZikaron. At the sound of this siren, Israelis throughout the country will stop what they’re doing and honor those who’ve gone before them. Unlike several other countries around the world, most Israelis have spent some amount of time in the military. An additional siren will sound at 11:00 AM on Monday.</p>
  118. <p>Fallen police officers, Mossad agents, and General Security Service members are also recognized on Yom HaZikaron. Following the second siren, several ceremonies will commence throughout the day. The Israeli flag will be lowered to half-mast and radio stations throughout the country will play recordings about the history of Israel’s wars. Some people will recite different prayers throughout the day as well.</p>
  119. <p>One cannot emphasize enough the value given to each person serving in the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). To provide you with a specific example, in most countries, the engine of a combat tank will be located at the back of the machine. That way, if a tank is targeted in the front and the soldiers die, there is the possibility of salvaging the engine to reuse it. This is not the case in Israel, as its tanks are equipped with engines in the front. This means that if an attack were to occur and the tank was struck, the engine might be destroyed, but the soldier(s) might be spared. The emphasis is on the soldier, not the vehicle.</p>
  120. <p>There’s no question as to the significance of this day, for, without the commitment of the Jewish men and women to defend their God-given land throughout history, there would be no Jewish State. This is why Memorial Day comes immediately before Independence Day, or Yom HaAtzma’ut, in Israel – to honor the fallen prior to celebrating freedom.</p>
  121. <p>Today, Israel’s military is ranked among the top 20 most powerful militaries in the world.</p>
  122. <p>Yom HaZikaron will conclude with a torch-lighting ceremony at Mt. Herzl where the burial site of Theodore Herzl is located. Furthermore, it marks the beginning of Independence Day, Yom HaAtzmaut – a joyous celebration throughout the country. Though, undoubtedly, there will an intense mix of emotions given the current political and wartime turmoil in the land.</p>

  203. <p>Holocaust Remembrance Day, or Yom HaShoah <strong>יום השואה</strong>, is set to begin on Sunday evening as the Jewish community in Israel and abroad remembers the horrific events and lives lost throughout the Holocaust of the 1930s and 1940s. Over six million members of the Jewish community were killed under the Nazi regime headed by the notorious Adolf Hitler, of which more than 1.5 million were children.</p>
  204. <p>As noted by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM):</p>
  205. <blockquote><p>“Driven by a racist ideology that viewed Jews as “parasitic vermin” worthy only of eradication, the Nazis implemented genocide on an unprecedented scale. All of Europe’s Jews were slated for destruction: the sick and the healthy, the rich and the poor, the religiously orthodox and converts to Christianity, the aged and the young, even infants. Thousands of Jewish children survived this brutal carnage, however, many because they were hidden. With identities disguised and often physically concealed from the outside world, these youngsters faced constant fear, dilemmas, and danger. Theirs was a life in shadows, where a careless remark, a denunciation, or the murmurings of inquisitive neighbors could lead to discovery and death.”</p></blockquote>
  206. <p>Yom HaShoah means “day of remembrance of the Catastrophe and the Heroism.” You will note that this day of remembrance, one of the most sacred days on the Jewish calendar, begins on the 27th of Nisan on the Hebrew calendar. This was the date Jewish resistance fighters began a revolt against the Nazis in 1943 at the Warsaw Ghetto in an attempt to make a stand and prevent more Jews from being transported to death camps. It was a statement of freedom.</p>
  207. <p>Often, Yom HaShoah will be observed by reviewing stories of those who survived the Holocaust. Some people will even light candles in memory of those who died. It is also a tradition for Israel to sound a siren throughout the country at 10:00 AM (Monday) that brings everyone to a stop for two minutes. Even vehicles on the highway will stop, and the driver will get out of the car to join others in honoring the victims. Flags around Israel will be lowered to half-mast.</p>
  208. <p>Among other events that will take place at Yad Vashem – the official Holocaust Memorial site in Jerusalem – there will be a wreath-laying ceremony. Additionally, other observances will take place at Safra Square in Jerusalem. Venues that typically facilitate public entertainment will be closed.</p>
  209. <p>Suppose you ever have an opportunity to visit Yad Vashem. In that case, you will note that there are several different exhibits that provide a historical account of what took place during one of the world’s darkest hours. One of these exhibits, the Children’s Memorial, offers a continuous recording that lists the “names of murdered children, their ages and countries of origin” one by one.</p>
  210. <p>Undoubtedly, you will experience an eerie feeling as you’re confronted with the reality of how evil the heart of man truly is and what it’s capable of doing when detached from the Creator.</p>
  211. <p>The observance of Yom HaShoah in 2024 will be accompanied by a significant amount of additional mourning in light of the massacre of October 7, 2023, which included the most grotesque killing of Jews that the world has seen since the Holocaust. The attack was carried out by Hamas terror militants from the Gaza Strip, resulting in the slaughtering of approximately 1,200 innocent Israelis. Hamas systematically targeted civilian areas, including a music festival, public roads, and multiple kibbutzes.</p>

  333. <p>Jews worldwide will begin celebrating Passover on Monday evening. Jews in Israel celebrate the holiday for seven days, while Jews abroad celebrate for eight. Passover, known in Hebrew as Pesach, begins on the evening of April 22nd and runs through April 30th. On the Hebrew calendar, this would be the evening of the 14th of Nisan until the evening of the 22nd.</p>
  334. <p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;-</p>
  335. <p>God chose Moses to lead the Israelites from captivity and decades of slavery to the Promised Land. When Moses came with God’s demand to the Pharaoh, he refused, marking the beginning of the ten plagues. The plagues came across Egypt and the Pharaoh refused to let the Chosen people go. The first of the plagues was water that turned into blood, followed by frogs, lice, flies, deceased livestock, boils, thunder and hail, locusts, darkness for three days, and the final plague of the death of the firstborn of every family, including the Pharaoh’s.</p>
  336. <p>God instructed Moses to have every Israelite home in Egypt mark their door with lamb’s blood. And as the biblical account reveals, the Lord would pass over every home where the blood was applied; hence the holiday’s name of Pesach, which means “to pass over” as the Lord spared His People’s firstborn. Jewish culture centers Passover on remembering the Exodus from Egypt, the first night of the holiday marked with a ritual meal called the Seder (order), a meal of 14 parts, and the traditional text called the Haggadah.</p>
  337. <p>The Haggadah (telling) is filled with prayers, songs, and psalms to be read over the Seder. The Haggadah additionally has many texts from the Midrash (commentaries by rabbis on the Torah).</p>
  338. <p>One of the major Jewish customs of the Passover is the removal of all “chametz” (leavened bread) from Jewish homes for the entirety of the Passover holiday. This tradition commemorates the Israelites’ departure from Egypt in a hurry with their bread unable to rise.</p>
  339. <p>During Passover, Jews eat matzah, or unleavened bread, throughout the entire seven days. Matzah is also remembered as Lechem Oni, the bread of affliction. Leavened bread is traditionally burned the day before the holiday begins which is known as the “Biyur Chametz”. However, many Jewish communities today sell their bread to non-Jewish neighbors or friends. </p>
  340. <p>The unleavened bread is a reminder to the Jews of when the Israelites had to leave Egypt in haste. But the full application of the Matzah (Unleavened Bread) isn’t realized until we understand that it (leaven) represents the sin that needs to be purged from our lives, which can only be possible through faith and obedience to the only person to ever live a sinless (unleavened) life, Jesus.</p>
  341. <p>The Seder meal consists of 14 traditions, with various forms of observance by Jewish communities worldwide. The meal ends with the traditional blessing that has been repeated since the Jews’ exile from Israel. “Next year in Jerusalem”, a prayer that finally came to pass with the establishment of the Jewish homeland, Israel.</p>
  342. <p>Two thousand years ago, on Passover Eve, Jesus was crucified and became the ultimate Passover. As it is written:</p>
  343. <blockquote><p><strong>1 Corinthians 5:7</strong><br />
  344. “…For even Christ our passover is sacrificed for us….”</p></blockquote>
  345. <p>May we all pray for the understanding of the people of Israel as for who their true Passover is so that they will experience their personal exodus from the land of bondage to sin into the promises of God.</p>
  346. <blockquote><p><strong>Romans 11:26</strong><br />
  347. “And so all Israel shall be saved: as it is written, There shall come out of Zion the Deliverer, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob….”</p></blockquote>
  348. <p>So, while Passover may inherently be a Jewish holiday, is there an application for everyone else? Absolutely.</p>
  349. <p>The shadow became the substance in the Messiah, Jesus Christ. And just as the people of Israel had to apply the blood of the Passover lamb to their doorposts in order to escape judgment, so we must each individually apply the blood of Jesus to our hearts in order to escape His wrath.</p>
  350. <blockquote><p><strong>Colossians 2:16-17</strong><br />
  351. So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ.</p></blockquote>

  783. <p><strong>Purim</strong> = פורים; <strong>meaning “lots”</strong></p>
  784. <p>From Saturday evening until sundown on Sunday, Jews throughout the world will celebrate Purim, a holiday commemorating the Jewish people’s survival in the ancient Persian Empire. Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar by Jewish communities. It includes festivities, parties, costumes, and the reading of the Book of Esther. The story of Purim is found in the Book of Esther, where a plot by Haman, the royal advisor to King Ahasuerus, was conceived to kill the Jews in the Persian Empire.</p>
  785. <p>Three years into King Ahasuerus’ reign, he made a feast for officials, servants, nobles, and princes lasting 180 days. When that feast was over, the king gave a banquet for all the people in Shushan. On the seventh day of that banquet, King Ahasuerus asked his wife, Queen Vashti, to be brought before his men to show them her beauty. Queen Vashti refused his request, angering the king, which led to her banishment.</p>
  786. <p>Following Queen Vashti’s removal, King Ahasuerus sought a new wife, ordering a beauty pageant in which he would choose a new bride. A law was decreed that all of the beautiful, single women of the land would be brought to King Ahasuerus so he could pick a new queen.</p>
  787. <p>One of the women presented to the king was Esther, an orphaned girl raised by her cousin Mordecai who loved her as his daughter. Mordecai was a Shushanite resident and leader of the Jewish people. He asked Esther to keep her Jewish identity a secret for her own safety.</p>
  788. <p>Esther was forced to join King Ahasuerus’s harem to participate in the contest of becoming the king’s new wife. For twelve months, the women were pampered in perfumes, oils, and lotions in preparation for the king’s choosing. During the selection, King Ahasuerus was taken by Esther’s beauty and married her, making her Queen Esther of Persia.</p>
  789. <p>Shortly after their marriage, Mordecai overheard a plot by the king’s servants to assassinate King Ahasuerus. The men were hanged after Mordecai informed the king of their plan.</p>
  790. <p>One of the king’s ministers, Haman, was then promoted in rank. Haman was an anti-Semite, a descendant of the nation of Amalek. Shortly after his promotion, King Ahasuerus issued a decree that all must bow to Haman, but Mordecai refused to bow to Haman.</p>
  791. <p>Haman went before the king, offering him 10,000 silver talents in exchange for permission to exterminate all the Jews of the land. The king refused to take the money and told Haman, “The nation is yours to do with as you please,” opening the floodgates for the persecution of the Jewish people. This marked the 13th of the month of Adar.</p>
  792. <p>Haman sent proclamations throughout the kingdom signed with the royal crest calling on the people of the empire to oppose the Jews. Upon hearing of the decree, Mordecai called Esther to go to the king and beg him to spare the Jewish people. Mordecai told Esther:</p>
  793. <blockquote><p><strong>Esther 4:13-14</strong><br />
  794. “Do not think in your heart that you will escape in the king’s palace any more than all the other Jews. For if you remain completely silent at this time, relief and deliverance will arise for the Jews from another place, but you and your father’s house will perish. Yet who knows whether you have come to the kingdom as such a time as this?”</p></blockquote>
  795. <p>Esther would agree to do as Mordecai requested and called on the Jew of the land to fast for three days, which all of them (approximately 22,000) agreed to do.</p>
  796. <p>Following the three days of prayer and fasting, Esther approached the king. The king accepted her, and Esther invited Haman and the king to a feast she would prepare, and they accepted. The king asked Esther if she had a request for him, and Esther stated that she would ask him at the feast. The king accepted her invitation. During the feast, Mordecai refused to bow to Haman, leading to a plot by Haman to have him hanged.</p>
  797. <p>The same night before the second feast, King Ahasuerus could not sleep and called on his servants to read from the royal chronicles. The servants read to him about Mordecai saving the king’s life. The king called on Haman, asking him what a man should be rewarded for saving a king. Haman responded that the man should be given royal garments, a royal horse, and be proclaimed throughout the city streets as the man who the king delights to honor…</p>
  798. <p>…King Ahasuerus ordered Haman to do this for “Mordecai the Jew.”</p>
  799. <p>The second feast arrived, and King Ahasuerus asked Esther what her request was. Esther revealed she was a Jew and exposed Haman for the evil man he was. She told the king about the gallows he built that were intended for Mordecai. The king immediately ordered that Haman be hanged on the gallows.</p>
  800. <p>Esther and Mordecai pleaded with the king to annul the decree of the 13th of Adar. However, the king could not annul a royal decree. However, the king did permit Esther and Mordecai to issue a new decree that the Jewish people were permitted to defend themselves and pre-emptively kill anyone who put them at risk.</p>
  801. <p>On the 13th of Adar, the Jews battled those who tried to kill them, including Haman’s ten sons who died in Shushan. Following the battle, Queen Esther requested from the king an additional day to slaughter those who attempted to kill the Jewish people. The king permitted her request, marking the 14th of Adar.</p>
  802. <p>On the 15th of Adar, the Jews of Shushan celebrated their victory, commemorating the event’s holiday. The holiday of Purim is a celebration and remembrance of the attempted destruction of the Jews of Shushan and Queen Esther and Mordecai’s remembrance.</p>
  803. <p>Observant Jews begin Purim on the 13th of Adar, fasting and commemorating Esther’s bravery. Jews today celebrate Purim by wearing costumes, having parties, and some will read the Book of Esther. During the reading of the Book of Esther, it is customary to “boo” every time Haman’s name is read aloud.</p>
  804. <p>Many communities hold a ‘Purim spiel,” a reenactment of the Purim story. The holiday is celebrated with “Oznei Haman” or better known as “Hamantaschen”- a pastry with different fillings. </p>
  805. <p>Today, we have the same spirit of the annihilation of the Jews coming from the same part of the world. Modern Iranian leaders are obsessed with the spirit of Haman even today. We don’t need an Esther in the palace anymore. We need the prayers of the saints worldwide.</p>
  806. <blockquote><p><strong>Psalm 121:4</strong><br />
  807. “Behold, He who keeps Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.”</p></blockquote>
  808. <p>In conclusion, we would do well to remember that the Jewish nation’s survival is not contingent on the hostility of the world, but rather, the power of the One who keeps them:</p>
  809. <blockquote><p><strong>Jeremiah 31:35-36</strong><br />
  810. Thus says the Lord,<br />
  811. Who gives the sun for a light by day,<br />
  812. The ordinances of the moon and the stars for a light by night,<br />
  813. Who disturbs the sea,<br />
  814. And its waves roar<br />
  815. (The Lord of hosts is His name):<br />
  816. “If those ordinances depart<br />
  817. From before Me, says the Lord,<br />
  818. Then the seed of Israel shall also cease<br />
  819. From being a nation before Me forever.”</p></blockquote>
