Individually, Sasha, Anya, and Yoonsuh achieved an outstanding 5-0 record (excluding the final round, which they also won). 178.
We are very excited to share news of college acceptances of BASIS Independent Brooklyn’s Class of 2024! Our seniors have many fantastic options, and now they will spend time deciding among the top schools in the country. Students took time to research and fully explore programs and universities offering resources that will build on their interests nurtured in high school – both in classes and activities outside of school – for years to come.

179.
180.
181.
182.
“Members of our Class of 2024 have grown tremendously as individuals through the years on our campus,” commented Head of School Josh Harmon. “Having taught many of them in fifth grade, I can say firsthand that they are a group of students who have always shown promise as learners and sincerely cared for one another. I am proud to see them move on and begin to shape the future. It is also an honor to now see their hard work, passion for learning, and many different commitments beyond the classroom recognized in outstanding options for university.”

190.

“Many of the students in this year’s class have been with our school since its founding,” said College Counselor Matt Brauch. “In our high school program, all these students actively leaned into coursework, clubs, and extracurricular activities to identify and then explore their interests. They aggressively chased after these interests inside and outside of school starting with course selection (choosing where available to pursue their interests on our campus) and through utilizing resources we created and updated throughout their tenure here to explore their interests off campus.”

191.
192.
193.
194.
We are proud to share the university and college acceptances received by our 27 students who applied to colleges this year – 25 seniors and two Class of ’23 alums, who applied to schools during a gap year with the help of our College Counselor.

195.
196.
197.
198.
We are incredibly proud of our Class of 2024. Here are some highlights:

199.
200.
201.
202.

203.
6/27 students (22%) were offered seats at top-10 ranked universities.

204.

205.
206.
207.
208.

209.
59% were offered spots at colleges in the top 25-ranked national and international institutions, including the University of Pennsylvania, Duke, Northwestern, Cornell, Johns Hopkins, University of Michigan, University of California Berkeley, Barnard, Emory, Georgetown, Hamilton, and Colgate. Three students in the senior class this year received offers of admission from the University of Pennsylvania.

210.

211.
212.
213.
214.

215.
74% gained acceptance to schools ranked in the top 50. If McGill is counted given its rank as #54 in “Best Global Universities,” then that number rises to 78%.

216.

217.
218.
219.
220.

221.
96% gained acceptance to schools ranked in the top 75. One student applied to Cooper Union early decision, and the school is ranked #2 regionally and very high for engineering. However, it is ranked #107 nationally via Forbes.

222.

223.
224.
225.
226.

227.
Students continue to look beyond the U.S. and consider offers of admission from international institutions, including the London School of Economics and Political Science, University College London, King’s College London, University of Toronto, McGill University, and University of St. Andrews.

228.

229.
230.
231.
232.
“While I am thrilled that all our students have fantastic college options,” shared Mr. Brauch. “I am most proud of them for applying to schools that fit what they want out of a college environment and experience. Through our many conversations and their actions, each of our seniors chose the path that fit them best at and outside of our school. They became true drivers in this process. That has served them well at our school and will help them tremendously as they take their next steps towards college and beyond.”

240.
Congratulations to our Bears! We know they have a big decision to make before our College Decision Day Celebration on May 15th. We look forward to celebrating their choices with them in person that day. Our soon-to-be graduates have had a huge impact on our school, and we are confident they will develop further into the leaders our world needs in the years to come.

Mr. Chris’s dedication to this experience reflects his passion for learning and exploration. He brings this same energy to the classroom every day, inspiring his students and colleagues.

Witnessing totality for a breathtaking 4 minutes and 15 seconds was an experience he won’t soon forget. While we can’t fully replicate the magic of the moment, Mr. Chris brings his infectious enthusiasm to life through incredible photos and an engaging video. 287.
For me, the experience transcended mere observation. I had the incredible fortune of traveling with my family to Gatesville, Texas, where we witnessed totality unfold on a quiet country road, nestled between a cow farm and an army base. Being just outside the direct path, we were still treated to an unforgettable 4 minutes and 15 seconds of complete darkness.

You’ll see details like Baily’s Beads and the sun’s corona, which the telescope rendered in an almost mythical green hue, although that is not the actual color.

320.
321.
In the video, you might hear us mention seeing solar flares. While scientists haven’t recorded any flares during this eclipse, what we witnessed were actually solar prominences – massive, long-lasting structures on the sun’s surface. The largest one in our photos is a staggering 3.5-4 times the diameter of Earth!

331.
The sudden drop in temperature and the eerie darkness during totality were truly striking. We had planned to observe the cows’ reactions, but once it hit, we were too busy being awestruck! It was an experience filled with pure wonder and excitement.

332.
333.
334.
335.
Sharing this experience isn’t just about how amazing it was, but also about encouraging you to chase your own astronomical adventure. While total eclipses are rare in North America, they occur more frequently elsewhere. Check out this website to explore the next 15 total solar eclipses. If you ever get the chance to witness totality, don’t hesitate! It’s an experience you won’t forget.

Our 24 seniors proved worthy of that ranking as they were accepted to 60 colleges and universities in the US and Canada. The Class of 2024 began their college application process during their College Counseling Boot Camp last May, and the acceptance list below marks the culmination of 12 months of hard work and application dedication. It has been quite a year, and we are excited for what the future brings for the Class of 2024.

445.

446.
Thinking of a creative and unique business idea is a challenge for even the globe’s most talented and proven business professionals. Give that same challenge to a group of high school students all attending exceptional schools and the results are sure to impress. How could students in Grades 9 – 12 create a start-up idea, product, or service from inception to implementation? One that would also impress a panel of judges made up of industry professionals? That’s what a group of educators discovered at the Startups at Spring Competition.

447.
448.
449.
450.
The competition is open to high school students attending a Spring Education school and focuses on a specific type of business start-up. This year’s theme was creativity and it allowed the students to think outside of the box and present their ideas, first to their local school, and then one team from each school was selected and invited to attend a network-wide competition. Students then made the same presentation but, instead of it being in front of their peers and school administration, it was in front of industry professionals.

451.
452.
453.
454.
The professionals judge the competition on the feasibility and profitability of each idea presented. Judges listened to see if the teams explained their business idea clearly, was it unique, and implemented the year’s theme. Beyond those basic judging expectations, they also sought to see if the team understood and addressed the financial challenges of starting a business, did they effectively present their market strategy, and could they answer confidently improvisational questions regarding their “pitch”.

455.
456.
457.
458.
Ms. Jaymie Silva, BASIS Independent Schools Subject Expert Teacher and organizer of the competition said, “I’m always impressed by what our students are capable of and I appreciate that this competition is open to all high school students across our network of schools. These students develop their ideas and compete in their free time and the passion and engagement in their projects show. They are truly dedicated to making our future world better with their ideas and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next!”

542.
Pitch: HelpUnplugged is an AI portable assistance for off-the-grid health concerns. Currently, no smart diagnostic tools with offline capabilities exist for public use. No offline messaging systems exist to link patients with medical help directly. Unwell hikers in remote locations face gnawing worry and possible danger. In Arizona County, 12 hikers died from medical emergencies in remote locations over just 13 years.

543.
544.
545.
546.
HelpUnplugged would be an AI diagnostic tool that functions completely offline; obtaining vital signs and symptoms, processing data, and signaling help. HelpUnlpugeed will ensure that hikers in peril are aware of their condition and prevent further complications.

The project I pitched related to neural networks and offline communication, but participating in Startups at Spring taught me far more than just machine learning — from the mechanics of marketing to the technicality of TAM calculations. It is difficult for inexperienced home cooks and people who just want to cook something with the ingredients and equipment they have in hand to actually have a good cooking experience. More than half of Americans struggle with the most basic recipes. Pacing, unfamiliar or difficult techniques, and inaccessible ingredients and equipment all cause this struggle.

690.

691.

692.
693.
694.
695.

696.
697.
698.
699.

700.
701.
702.
703.

In Arizona County, 12 hikers died from medical emergencies in remote locations over just 13 years.

790.
791.
HelpUnplugged would be an AI diagnostic tool that functions completely offline; obtaining vital signs and symptoms, processing data, and signaling help. HelpUnlpugeed will ensure that hikers in peril are aware of their condition and prevent further complications.

935.

936.

937.
938.
939.
940.

941.
942.
943.
944.

945.
946.
947.
948.

1181.

1182.
1183.
1184.
1185.

1186.
1187.
1188.
1189.

1190.
1191.
1192.
1193.

No offline messaging systems exist to link patients with medical help directly. Unwell hikers in remote locations face gnawing worry and possible danger. In Arizona County, 12 hikers died from medical emergencies in remote locations over just 13 years.

1425.

1426.

1427.
1428.
1429.
1430.

1431.
1432.
1433.
1434.

1435.
1436.
1437.
1438.
