20.
The Wrap’s scathing report on Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s lack of professionalism made big news earlier this week.

 21.
While characterizing The Rock as a primadonna, the report described his tendency to be late on set as something that drove his co-workers nuts in the Hollywood world. This claim also touched on his return to WWE this year, where The Rock was said to have arrived late for his match at WrestleMania 40.

 22.
However, according to Wrestling Observer Radio’s Dave Meltzer, WWE’s denial of that claim is accurate:

 23.

“He was not late for WrestleMania, but he was three hours late for the fan fest...some people will see the quote from Chris Legentil and say, ‘Oh, it’s damage control.’ But I’ve talked to and heard from several people...he was definitely not late for WrestleMania.”

 24.
That being said, Meltzer claims there are people in WWE who do resent The Rock for trying to take credit for WWE’s current hot streak:

 25.

“No one can say anything bad about him publicly, but there are people who are very resentful of him going like, ‘I came back and wrestling is cool,’ after WWE had a tremendous year. You know, the idea that he’s kind of trying to take credit for this resurgence that happened a year before he came back.”

 26.
It always did catch my attention when The Rock used the line on TV about wrestling being cool again now that he’s back, and I can definitely see why some folks in the company interpreted that line as a slight against them. If anything, it was the downfall of Vince McMahon and rise of Paul “Triple H” Levesque that was the catalyst for WWE’s rise in popularity.

 27.
In other words, WWE certainly didn’t need The Rock to come back and turn things around for them. Per Meltzer, this led to some people in the company being happy about The Rock’s highly anticipated return match on WrestleMania Saturday not outdrawing the main event of WrestleMania Sunday:

 28.

“There were definitely people who were happy that Sunday outdrew Saturday when it came to viewers...the idea that the match with The Rock and his return did not outdraw Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes. But you can also make the argument that everyone knew The Rock was going to be involved in that match too.”

 29.
Given WWE’s surge in momentum going back to the second half of 2022, WrestleMania 40 was going to be an incredibly successful show even if The Rock had nothing to do with it. But Dwayne’s harshest critics can at least acknowledge that his presence is a boon for business, while simultaneously rolling their eyes about his claim that he made wrestling cool again:

 30.

“Even people who are very negative on him readily admit that when he came in it made the brand more popular. He drove TV ratings to a great degree. He helped drive this WrestleMania to be the biggest two day WrestleMania there’s been.”

 31.
So there you have it, Cagesiders. The Rock wasn’t late for WrestleMania. If his primadonna-ish tendencies rubbed some folks in WWE the wrong way, it doesn’t seem to be that big of a deal when the end result is an even more profitable and popular product.

 32.

 33.

 34.

 55.
Chris Jericho put some finishing touches on his new heel gimmick last week on Dynamite. After playing like he was oblivious to negative reactions from AEW fans online and in arenas, he renamed the FTW title and made it his mission to show the world the right way to be a professional wrestler.

 56.
He also found someone who actually wants to sit under his Learning Tree™: former AEW Tag champ Big Bill. If you were thinking Bill would earn Jericho’s acceptance by interfering in a match on his behalf... congratulations, you’ve watched wrestling before! It happened on the May 1 Dynamite, when Bill chokeslammed Katsuyori Shibata through a table. Jericho covered him, and now will keep the “For The World” championship. At least until HOOK returns and takes it back from him.

 58.
Was it enough to become Jericho’s latest protege? As Chris’ pandering new character might say, “You betcha!”

There’s a pro wrestling product that can hit you in the right spot and make you love wrestling like you thought you’d never be able to love it again. It’s there, I promise. You just gotta reach out and find it, and that, my friends, is what the Sermon on the Mat is all about.

 205.
AEW Rampage (May 1, 2024) emanated from Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The show featured a Manitoba Massacre between Willow Nightingale and Skye Blue, Chris Jericho accepting Big Bill Morrissey into his vortex, the Outcasts calling out Mariah May, and more.

 206.
AEW plowed a double-header of Dynamite and Rampage. 208.
Excalibur, Tony Schiavone, and Daddy Magic were on commentary. Justin Roberts handled ring announcer duties.

 209.
The Elite ambushed Kenny Omega on a stretcher backstage. It was only business. This scene followed the Elite’s violent attack on Omega during Dynamite.

 217.
Jay White vs. Dante Martin

 218.
Solo duel with all seconds sent to the back. Martins styled with agility until White pulled him off the ropes. Martin banged his head on the way down. White went to work on Martin’s legs to slow the speedster. Martin rallied for the double springboard Nose Dive, however, White kicked out on the cover. Martin went for his suplex finisher. White created a window of opportunity by countering for a snap suplex. Switchblade quickly transitioned for a Blade Runner to win. Afterward, White added another suplex for good measure.

 219.
Jay White defeated Dante Martin.

 220.
Deonna Purrazzo has had enough of Thunder Rosa. The Virtuosa is a five-time world champion (in Impact). She’s starting to feel like her old self. If Thunder wants to make this personal, then Purrazzo will oblige.

 253.
O’Reilly targeted Romero’s arm with force. Romero repaid the favor. In a battle of one-armed men, furious kicks were unleashed. The best shot at a pinfall came from Romero on an avalanche Sliced Bread. O’Reilly kicked out on the cover. Back to working arm submissions. Slick mat work led to O’Reilly surprising Romero with a roll-up to win.

 291.
Grade: B

 292.
This was a better than average episode of Rampage with the benefit of cohesion from Dynamite. The promos paid immediately for events from earlier in the evening.

 293.
Damn. Daaaaamn. Damn! The finish to the Manitoba Massacre lived up to the moniker. That was a violent climax with a barbed wire board. Willow Nightingale and Skye Blue earned their lumps throughout with all the chairs and the tacks. This should be an emphatic finale to the feud. (If your feed was cut off early on TrillerTV, AEW has the end of the match posted on YouTube.)

 294.
The two men’s matches were slick. Jay White undercut Dante Martin’s wheels to slow the pace. Switchblade showed grit to kick out of the Nose Dive, and he had a trick up his sleeve to push for the Blade Runner. That was the type of solid win to showcase White as a higher player. Kyle O’Reilly and Rocky Romero had an engaging technical duel over arm grappling. A win is a win for O’Reilly, but I was a little disappointed in a roll-up victory after so much build over submissions. I feel a little robbed of not seeing which man would triumph with an armbar.

 295.
Lots of engaging promos. I’m giving the nod to the Undisputed Kingdom and the Outcasts as the cream of the crop. Wacky humor was on full display. As for Deonna Purrazzo, I’m curious if this is the start of a heel turn. AEW squeezed the juice of her babyface run into a failed title shot. The Virtuosa is naturally confident borderlining on arrogance. Purrazzo knows how to make that character shine as a heel.

 317.
AEW Dynamite (May 1, 2024) emanated from Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba. The show featured the Young Bucks taking over the broadcast, Kenny Omega’s return being violently interrupted, and more

 318.
AEW massaged a double-header of Dynamite and Rampage. This recap will cover the Dynamite episode. For the Rampage recap, click here.

 319.
On to Dynamite...

 320.
Young Bucks abuse EVP power

 321.
Welcome to the EVP reign of terror. After the Elite sidelined Tony Khan with a vicious attack, the Young Bucks abused their power to run amok.

 322.
The show started with Khan live from Jacksonville, Florida. He isn’t cleared to travel, so the boss man would run the show remotely. One problem though. The Jacksons cut his feed from the production truck to claim technical difficulties. The Bucks explained that there were no consequences for their actions due to iron-clad EVP contracts. In fact, they assume positions of power if Khan is unable to fulfill his duty. And that’s what happened all episode long. The EVPs flexed their power in jerky ways.

 323.

 324.

 325.
We have a new open?!
How is this possible after last week's horrendous actions by The Elite?!

Watch #AEWDynamite LIVE on TBS!@youngbucks pic.twitter.com/bIdWIc4hIc
— All Elite Wrestling (@AEW) May 2, 2024

 327.
 328.
 329.

 330.
That was a good start to pick up from last week’s momentum. Khan had a smile on his face in the security of his home base while wholesome elevator music played only for the Young Bucks to rip apart. Their contract explanation was a smart way to close logic questions. This isn’t a courtroom drama that demands challenging their paperwork. This is a wacky wrestling show where such concerns can be alleviated with basic clarification. The key was addressing it in the first place so as not to let questions linger.

 331.
That was only the start of the Young Bucks’ shenanigans on the evening.

 332.
Swerve Strickland’s PPV opponent

 333.
The first segment inside the ring belonged to the world champion. Swerve Strickland didn’t want to waste any time. He demanded to know who will challenge for the AEW World Championship at Double or Nothing on May 26.

 334.
The Young Bucks popped up on the big screen to serve a dose of humility. They didn’t appreciate Swerve bad-mouthing them, so they handpicked his opponent. Enter Christian Cage.

 335.

 336.

 337.
It can't be...

Watch #AEWDynamite LIVE on TBS!@SwerveConfident | @Christian4Peeps | @YoungBucks pic.twitter.com/3q1TuB3kAF
— All Elite Wrestling (@AEW) May 2, 2024

 339.
 340.
 341.

 342.
Christian was flanked by his family. The Patriarch popped Swerve in the face with the microphone, then the numbers game helped him plant Swerve with a Killswitch onto the title belt. Christian proceeded to make a compelling case for the seeds of this feud. He never forgot how Swerve broke into Nick Wayne’s gym to leave him in a pool of blood. Christian was also angered at how Swerve embarrassed him as tag team partners losing at All In. This is the perfect time for revenge. Taking Swerve’s title is personal. Christian rubbed salt in the wounds with a parting shot to be the father that Swerve’s daughter needs.

 343.

 344.

 345.
Christian Cage never forgets...

Watch #AEWDynamite LIVE on TBS!@SwerveConfident | @Christian4Peeps | @TheNickWayne | @Luchasaurus | @PrinceKingNana pic.twitter.com/h19kGwGavQ
— All Elite Wrestling (@AEW) May 2, 2024
 346.

 347.
 348.
 349.

 350.
This was outstanding promo material to kick-start the feud. AEW flipped the animosity from 0 to 100 pretty darn quick. Christian’s reasons play into history to make this story instantly feel heated, and his actions add fuel for Swerve to take it personal beyond just a title defense. I appreciate the preparation to set up Christian’s line about Swerve’s daughter. Swerve delivered that nugget of information on Collision, and then AEW paid it off with Christian’s promo. The feud also touches on the theme of Swerve’s past behavior coming back to haunt him. The Young Bucks’ explanation covers for the lack of rankings. Who needs rankings when the EVPs are abusing their power. That logic is sufficient enough as far as I’m concerned.

 351.
Jack Perry speaks

 352.
Later in the show, Jack Perry reiterated that he wants what is best for AEW. Perry accepted being the scapegoat as a sacrifice. It is now the new era under the Elite.

 353.

 354.

 355.
"We are entering a new era under The Elite"
- Jack Perry

Watch #AEWDynamite LIVE on TBS!@youngbucks | @boy_myth_legend pic.twitter.com/aE87pMV288
— All Elite Wrestling (@AEW) May 2, 2024

 359.

 360.
Perry made his presence felt in the main event scene.

 361.
Kenny Omega’s hometown return

 362.
Kenny Omega returned to AEW in front of hometown fans in Winnipeg. Omega explained his absence due to diverticulitis. He was 24 hours away from dying in the hospital. Rather than surgery, Omega decided to let his body heal naturally, however, his ailment could be a ticking time bomb. One blunt blow could kill him. Omega continued with discussion of feeling inadequate only to realize it was withdrawals from professional wrestling. Omega promised that he will exhaust every option for recovery in order to return to the ring. Omega’s attention turned to the Young Bucks. He has an EVP contract too, so they can’t strip his power.

 363.

 364.

 365.
Kenny Omega has had a lot to think about...

Watch #AEWDynamite LIVE on TBS!@KennyOmegaManX pic.twitter.com/kcpbBTZPQK
— All Elite Wrestling (@AEW) May 2, 2024

 367.
 368.
 369.

 370.
Enter Okada for a tense staredown with his NJPW rival. Okada declared himself as the new Best Bout Machine. Boom! Jack Perry blindsided Omega. The hometown hero fought back for a snap dragon suplex. Omega teased a V-Trigger, however, Okada hooked his foot as a distraction outside. Perry rammed a chair into Omega’s midsection. The Bucks ran down to cool the situation, then Omega conveniently rose ripe for the picking of an EVP Trigger. Thank you, and goodnight. The Bucks blasted Omega in the mush. FTR ran out for the save too late, and the Elite scurried to safety.

 371.

 372.

 373.
"What is wrong with these people?"

Watch #AEWDynamite LIVE on TBS!@KennyOmegaManX | @RainmakerXOkada | @boy_myth_legend | @youngbucks pic.twitter.com/2NATRMT73G
— All Elite Wrestling (@AEW) May 2, 2024
 374.

 375.
 376.
 377.

 378.
That was a fantastic promo session from Omega. He built drama about his injury and eventual comeback. His passionate words gave emotional meaning for fans to react to the Elite’s attack. The cumulative effect was a kick-ass moment for Omega’s fighting spirit on the dragon suplex. It was also an example of heels looking like true scumbags in comparison to a valiant hero. That vibe should trickle down for support to whoever ends up representing AEW against the ruthless Elite. AEW has done a great job so far with this overall story. Plus, I crack up every time seeing unsuspecting fellows find themselves in perfect position to take an EVP Trigger.

 379.
Let’s jam through the rest of Dynamite.

 380.
TNT Championship: Adam Copeland defeated Buddy Matthews to retain the title. Copeland’s opponent from the House of Black was a mystery until it was time for the match. Malakai Black would rather watch Copeland’s mind get destroyed, so Matthews answered the call. The finish revolved around Copeland’s spear. Matthews dodged the spear twice as the action carried on. Copeland connected on the third attempt. Copeland evaded a curb stomp, then he ran the ropes building force for the spear to win.

 381.
Afterward, Copeland threatened a conchairto to Matthews. Lights out, Black was in the ring urging Copeland to do it. When Copeland reared back with the angle of the chair pointed toward Black, lights out again. Black and Matthews vanished from the ring.

 382.

 383.

 384.
Is Adam Copeland's playing right into the #HouseOfBlack's hands?

Watch #AEWDynamite LIVE on TBS!@RatedRCope | @SNM_Buddy | @malakaiblxck pic.twitter.com/er6H1p6Do4
— All Elite Wrestling (@AEW) May 2, 2024
 385.

 386.
 387.
 388.

 389.
Solid match with an interesting ending. Even more interesting was Black’s mind games. This time, he feels like a proper villain trying to corrupt Copeland rather than his spooky riddles of dark self-help. It is painting an intriguing picture to see if Copeland’s soul embraces evil. And if so, will Copeland be able to return to the light? Or will he be lost for a heel run with the House of Black?

 390.
Samoa Joe defeated Isiah Kassidy. Squash via musclebuster. Joe was too powerful to be taken for a monkey flip, so he stacked Kassidy on his shoulders for the finishing maneuver.

 391.
This was an amusing effort from Kassidy to entertain despite being mincemeat. He used Joe’s towel to dance, so Joe promptly choked him. They set up the walk-away spot for Joe to easily sidestep Kassidy’s dive to the outside. Sandbagging the monkey flip was the final straw. Even though we didn’t see any hints about Joe’s direction moving forward, this match re-established him as a badass after losing the world title.

 392.
Sound on for the thud of Kassidy crashing on the floor.

 400.
Orange Cassidy did the unthinkable. Cassidy addressed Trent Beretta’s heinous attack on Chuck Taylor after their Parking Lot Fight. Cassidy hoped the fight would lead to letting off steam and regrouping as Best Friends, but that’s never going to happen now. Cassidy was informed that Chuck will never wrestle again. Trent interrupted on stage, so Cassidy charged up the ramp. Security and Kris Statlander prevented fisticuffs. Don Callis moseyed out to whisper in Cassidy’s ear. OC exited with Callis.

 406.
 407.

 408.
Whoa, what!?! Cassidy with Callis? That is unthinkable. I love it as a surprise tease. I fully assumed Callis was scouting Trent during the Parking Lot Fight. It never crossed my mind that Cassidy was in Callis’ sights. This all might develop as a ploy from Callis, but it is certainly shocking so far on this evening. I was actually expecting Cassidy to circle the backside of the entrance tunnels to attack Trent from behind, but that didn’t happen.

 409.
FTW Championship: Chris Jericho defeated Katsuyori Shibata to retain the title. FTW rules in effect for Jericho to empty a sack of hockey pucks, to which Shibata promptly suplexed him onto. In the end, Big Bill Morrissey butt in to chokeslam Shibata through a table, so Jericho could crawl over for the easy pin. Bill was sending a message that he wanted to be Jericho’s pupil under the Learning Tree.

 410.
This match was goofy fun in a good way with creativity. Jericho and Shibata went to town on a lengthy chop exchange. Shibata often absorbed the blow walking forward, while Jericho winced in pain at Shibata’s chops. They replayed a similar sequence with Shibata inside a trashcan as Jericho swung a kendo stick. Shibata walked forward and delivered a headbutt inside the can. I popped with laughter at that one.

 424.
 425.

 426.
The fight even had some strategy and skill with submissions. Bill had to ruin the result with bullshit interference, but at least it had purpose to push a story angle forward about the Learning Tree.

 427.
Claudio Castagnoli defeated Brian Cage. Claudio took Cage for a big swing then submit The Machine on a Sharpshooter.

 428.
Athletic hoss fight. The competitive match delivered entertainment as expected. There’s one logic letdown with Cage in relation to the overall show. This bout was supposedly booked as fallout to Claudio losing to Swerve. Even though there was no Mogul Embassy breakup, we haven’t seen Swerve and Cage on screen together lately. Well, if a partnership still exists, as this matchup would have viewers believe, then where was Cage when Swerve was beat down by Christian’s family? Now that I bring this up, I hope it leads to Machine versus Luchasaurus.

 429.
Serena Deeb defeated Mariah May. The Professor thrived with technique, while May rallied with spunk. Deeb had just the right hold at just the right time. She snatched a leg to counter a handspring headscissors in the corner, and the result was a single-leg crab submission. Toni Storm threw in the towel to protect her understudy. AEW announced that Deeb will receive a shot at the AEW Women’s World Championship at Double or Nothing.

 430.
This outcome was the necessary step to book Storm versus Deeb at the PPV. May still looked good in defeat by forcing Deeb to work for the win. Deeb showed her Houdini mindset with a nifty counter to earn victory.

 431.
Notes: Skye Blue believes Willow Nightingale is a fraud. Willow needed help from Stokely Hathaway to beat Blue. Willow and Kris Statlander lost the tag team street fight to Blue and Julia Hart. Blue challenged Willow to a TBS title fight for Rampage.

 491.
Speculating on the rumors surrounding pro wrestling is a favored pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to actually watching the matches. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors being churned out by the pro wrestling rumor mill.

 492.

Important reminder: Rumors are just that — rumors. None of this has been confirmed as fact, it’s just circulating around the pro wrestling rumor mill. We track rumor accuracy in a weekly feature called Rumor Look Back you can find here. Remember, take it all with a grain of salt.

 493.
Rumors for the Day:

 494.

 495.
Former UFC & WWE commentator Jimmy Smith went off on Ronda Rousey on his Unlocking the Cage podcast. Smith said Rousey always wants “all the credit, none of the blame”, pointing out how she never gave credit to the fighters who beat her in the Octagon and instead blames the losses on CTE. He also said that Ronda was so horrible to production people at UFC, “they were cheering when she got knocked out... Those are the people you can be mean to and rude to, and they can’t fight back. Those people couldn’t stand Ronda Rousey.”

 496.
According to Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio, the reason Patrick Mahomes essentially played a heel on Raw is “because WWE did not book this segment. It was a sponsored segment.” That sponsor was Prime, which wanted company founder Logan Paul and spokesperson Mahomes “to work together in an angle”.

 497.
During his Spaces talk on X yesterday, Triple H said an announcement on the date & location of WrestleMania 41 is coming “very, very soon”. McAfee went so far as to say that Khan isn’t even selling any of his TKO shares: “after talking to source(s), I can report that’s not true”.

 522.
 523.
AEW heavily promoted Kenny Omega’s return for the May 1 Dynamite in Winnipeg. Seeing the former World champ for the first time this year would have been noteworthy under any circumstances, but coming one week after the guys who kicked him out of The Elite took out Tony Khan... and just hours since The Young Bucks took control of the show in Khan’s absence.

 524.
The crowd was thrilled to see their fellow Winnipegger, but the mood quickly dampened when Omega started talking about his diverticulitis diagnosis. Kenny reminded us that doctors told him he was hours away from dying, and how either of the options they presented with could leave him with a colostomy bag or worse.

 525.
Kenny couldn’t watch AEW while he was out, as he’d get the shakes even thinking about wrestling. He thought he was going to have to tell us he was retiring. Then he watched Dynasty, and loved what he saw. He got the shakes again, but this time he realized it wasn’t fear — it was withdrawal! So while he’s knows the risks and isn’t sure what the odds are that he can come back, as long as there’s a 1% chance he promised us this isn’t over.

 526.

 532.

 533.
And the colostomy bag talk brought him to two other pieces of crap, The Bucks. He reminded them that he is also an EVP, so as long as Khan is out, he’ll have a say in what happens in AEW.

 534.

 539.
 540.

 541.
That brought out the man Matthew & Nicholas Jackson replaced Omega with in The Elite, his old New Japan rival Kazuchika Okada. Omega greeted Okada in Japanese, and said to give him a couple months and they could resume their epic feud in AEW. The Rainmaker responded that he’s The Best Bout Machine now. Scapegoat Jack Perry then struck from behind.

 542.
Despite what he said earlier (and reports that Omega wasn’t cleared to get physical tonight), Kenny put down Perry and nailed him with the Dragon Suplex. He immediately dropped in pain however, which opened the door for Jack to hit him in the midsection with a chair.

 543.
The Bucks were out next, feigning concern before hitting their old friend with an EVP Trigger. FTR ran in to chase them off so medics could put Kenny on a stretcher as Dynamite ended.

 544.

 550.

 551.
But when we came back for Rampage during AEW’s latest three hour show, The Elite were kicking Dax Harwood & Cash Wheeler’s butts in the back. Then the Jacksons tipped over Omega’s strecher and left him writhing on the concrete floor.
