It was evident how much Jaxson Dart missed him and, unfortunately for the Jints, that continues here. Although the 49ers’ banged up defense was riddled by the Texans last week, they are still a well-coached, veteran unit. With the Giants missing such a big piece, this is going to come down to game plan adjustments and coaching and we just can’t back Brian Daboll against Kyle Shanahan. Christian McCaffrey should be able to get free against a Giants run defense just blasted by Saquon Barkley, allowing the Niners to control the tempo and tone of the game.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: 49ers and the under.

VIKINGS at LIONS

1 p.m., Lions by 8 ½, 48 ½

HANK’S HONEYS: J.J. McCarthy is back but he’s going to have to be really back to match points against Jared Goff. The Lions feast on terrible defensive units because they have the balance and diversity needed to expose any weakness. McCarthy, who didn’t look all that great before he was injured, could be running for his life behind an O-line that’s missing pieces, most notably at center. The Vikings are among the worst run defenses in the league and must now deal with the David Montgomery-Jahmyr Gibbs tandem. They live and die by the blitz but Goff can get the ball out fast to a variety of underneath targets. With two weeks to prepare for a divisional foe, it’s Lions all the way.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Lions and the over.

FALCONS at PATRIOTS

1 p.m., Pats by 5 ½, 45

HANK’S HONEYS: Michael Penix Jr. and Drake London return to the Falcons’ lineup after a dreadful showing by Kirk Cousins, et al., against the Vikings while the Pats were pasting the Browns. That sent the spread way above the look ahead line of three, making this a recency bias special. There is no doubt that Drake Maye has been playing at a top tier level, although the level of competition has left something to be desired. The Falcons, who hardly put forth an effort last week, tend to play up and down to the level of their competition. Maye has been torching secondaries deep but much of that success has come against man coverage schemes. The Falcons’ zone philosophy will take some of that away. They have enough talent to keep this close.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Falcons and the under.

COLTS at STEELERS

1 p.m., Colts by 3, 50 ½

HANK’S HONEYS: This is a horrible matchup for the Steelers’ reeling defense. Daniel Jones has been thriving with quick, underneath and intermediate routes, an area of weakness for the Steelers. Indy has a banged-up secondary that Aaron Rodgers can attack deep so don’t be afraid of the high total. But he does not have the league’s leading rusher in his backfield or enough receiving weapons to win a shootout. The Steelers have allowed 330 or more passing yards three of the past four weeks and more than 30 points four times this season. We seem to be heading toward those marks again this week.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Colts and the over.

PANTHERS at PACKERS

1 p.m., Packers by 12 ½, 44 ½

HANK’S HONEYS: The Packers are caught between two big prime time games against an easily-overlooked opponent. They won big in the Aaron Rodgers revenge game in Pittsburgh and could be caught looking ahead to the Eagles on Monday night. Carolina may have been blown away by the Bills last week but the Bills were hyper focused in that game. Carolina is better than it looked in that one. With Bryce Young returning, they will have a better chance to hang in there. The line is huge and the Pack, which has had a few low-effort games so far, could be caught looking past them.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Panthers and the over.

CHARGERS at TITANS

1 p.m., Chargers by 10 ½, 43 ½

HANK’S HONEYS: We just can’t find a reason to bet on the Titans. They’re bad, really bad, and dealing with injuries to several players, most notably their All Pro DT Jeffery Simmons. Meanwhile, the Chargers, with 10 days rest here, are getting healthy. The return of OT Joe Alt has made a huge difference to Justin Herbert, who should enjoy plenty of time in the pocket as he picks on a very thin set of corners. Tennessee has allowed 89 points in its last three games while scoring 39. Their offense has no identity and has left QB Cam Ward where Bryce Young was his rookie year — in no man’s land.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Chargers and the over.

BEARS at BENGALS

1 p.m., Bears by 2 ½, 52 ½

HANK’S HONEYS: Keep an eye on the injured list. The Bengals can’t stop anybody and they are likely to be missing their best player in Trey Hendrickson, whose departure last week allowed the Jets to complete their crazy comeback. Ditto for Joe Flacco, whose shoulder injury could put Jake Browning back under center. If that’s the case, this is an easy call. The one thing the Bears D does really well is create turnovers, with a league-best 16 so far. No one throws more interceptions per pass attempt than Browning — not that Flacco isn’t capable of throwing a few up for grabs. While Caleb Williams is a week to week crap shoot, D’Andre Swift should have a monster game against a run D that allowed Breece Hall to run wild.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Bears and the over.

JAGUARS at RAIDERS

4:05 p.m., Jags by 3, 45

HANK’S HONEYS: Upset special. The shine is off the Jaguars recently and their inconsistency is a factor this week. This is the Raiders’ last gasp and we expect to get their best effort, especially since the heat was on Pete Carroll and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly as they skidded into their bye. The Jags’ 4-3 record is built against some weak opposition. Conversely, the Raiders’ schedule has been rugged outside of the Titans’ game and the Jaguars rank as one of their lesser opponents so far. Las Vegas is getting some players back after its bye, including Maxx Crosby, who is set to make life miserable for Trevor Lawrence, whose play has diminished since an impressive start.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Raiders and the under.

CHIEFS at BILLS

4:25 p.m., Chiefs by 1 ½, 52 ½

HANK’S HONEYS: The Chiefs seem to have regained their mojo and the Bills seem to have awakened from their slumber after the bye. Buffalo is rarely a dog at home so there is definitely value with them. They are 4-1 ATS in their last five regular season matchups with the Chiefs and have the formula to control this one by sending James Cook against K.C.’s meh run D and eating up the clock, keeping the red-hot Patrick Mahomes on the sidelines. The Chiefs are on the road on a short week while the Bills were able to get in some early prep week during their bye in Week 7.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Bills and the under.

CARDINALS at COWBOYS

Monday, 8:15 p.m., Cowboys by 3, 54

HANK’S HONEYS: It’s an easy over call, as it usually is when the Cowboys play. After that, it gets tricky. Both teams match up pretty well against each other. Kyler Murray, who hasn’t lost at AT&T Stadium going back to his high school days, returns. Although some feel that he’s actually a downgrade from Jacoby Brissett, he should find the Cowboys’ woeful secondary to his liking as he returns from injury. Ditto for Dak Prescott, who comes off his worst game of the season against Denver’s elite D and who always seems to perform better in Dallas. The game features two of the strongest legs in the NFL but with everything on the line, we’re backing Brandon Aubrey.

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Cowboys and the over.

* * *

LOOK BUT DON’T TOUCH

BRONCOS at TEXANS

1 p.m., Broncos by 1 ½, 40

HANK’S HONEYS: This is for sure a possible letdown spot for the Broncos after that miracle win over the Giants followed by a rout of the Cowboys. Denver’s inconsistency worries us and with Patrick Surtain out and Nico Collins and Christian Kirk probably back in, the Texans have a potential mismatch. On the other hand, while the defensive units are even, the offenses are not. Houston has struggled up until last week, for good reason. C.J. Stroud was granted one week of clean living in the pocket against the 49ers. But his exploitable O-line will up against the NFL’s No. 1 pass rush here. We don’t see either side being able to open it up, leading to a grind fest. Go with the under with a lean toward Denver.

CAN’T HELP YOURSELF?: Broncos and the under.

* * *

BEST OF THE REST

SAINTS at RAMS

4:05 p.m., Rams by 13 ½, 44

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Rams and the under.

SEAHAWKS at COMMANDERS

8:20 p.m., Seahawks by 3, 47

IF I WERE A BETTING MAN: Commanders and the over.

* * *

WEEK’S BEST BET: Colts. Indiana Jones never loses.

LAST WEEK: 7-6; OVER/UNDER: 8-5

OVERALL: 61-59-1; OVER/UNDER: 64-55-1

BEST BETS: 7-1

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">8576878</post-id>

San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey (23) runs against the Houston Texans during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Oct. 26, 2025, in Houston. As we head to the ballot box to deliver a likely democratic socialist victory, we will also face three ballot questions on housing. It is our opinion that you should vote YES on ballot proposals 2, 3 and 4.

We have, for the last few years, worked on and advocated for policies that transition our housing system from one based on profit and greed to one oriented around meeting peoples’ needs for housing. We will not reach our goals of housing justice for all without more housing, and that these ballot proposals make that more possible — as long as we pair it with all the other good work we have been doing as a movement.

And it is looking at what we actually need in the city that we are urging a YES vote. We need both sides of our strategy working together: strong tenant protections and more deeply affordable homes built with public purpose. New York City today has a real housing shortage that landlords exploit, but the last five years proved tenants can win. We need to keep on developing tenant power while we also scale up production, at cost and at pace.

Some argue that “community control” is the democratic answer. In practice, it “community control” hasn’t been neutral. Too often, affluent homeowner groups have used procedural choke points to block shelters, stall affordable developments in segregated neighborhoods, and even stop housing for elderly people returning from incarceration. What we have in place today is not actually democracy; it’s a complicated veto system preserving exclusion.

Real democracy means citywide, equity-driven planning with transparent rules and real mass governance, not endless veto points that reward those best positioned to say “no.” Currently, the approval gauntlet to get projects approved takes precious months at each step. Large, luxury developments can endure this process, but small, mission-driven and nonprofit builders struggle through it as costs increase. Streamlining aimed at deep affordability really matters.

These ballot proposals target exactly that. Proposal 2 fast-tracks publicly financed, deeply affordable projects and opens paths in exclusionary areas that have long blocked apartments. It cuts deliberation windows and lets reviews run in parallel rather than sequentially, cutting dead time without erasing transparency or community input.

Proposal 3 helps the city move quickly to acquire distressed or predatory portfolios and convert them to social/public use. Proposal 4 creates an affordable housing review board that allows Council members to still negotiate for local needs.

These ballot proposals will also help the next mayor deliver the housing platform the city has spoken in favor of: streamlining the public path to build, cut red tape that favors luxury over affordable housing, and finally add homes in high-opportunity neighborhoods that have blocked them. Yes, these tools were initiated under Mayor Adams, but tools are shaped by how we use them.

Put them in a pro-tenant, public-builder administration, and they become enablers for social housing and deeper affordability, not giveaways for luxury real estate. Taken together, these proposals grow the pie for labor.

We want to be explicit about three things in our argument. First, these reforms are not a silver bullet. Outcomes will, and must, depend on organizing, budget choices, and public stewardship over the long term. We are also not making a YIMBY, “abundance” argument. We are not claiming that market-rate supply alone will solve the crisis.

Our case continues to be for public or mission-driven production, non-market tenure, subsidy directed to the lowest incomes, and enforceable tenant protections. We do not see these operating to centralize power under the mayor. Under the new mayor we should work to centralize the capacity, but meaningfully decentralize the power. We support using central administrative tools while expanding decentralized, durable people power — tenant unions, district housing assemblies, participatory budgeting, and community stewardship institutions.

We don’t have to choose between a progressive building agenda and tenant power. Passing these proposals doesn’t replace the fights for universal rent stabilization, social housing, and major public investment, but it enables them by lowering per-unit costs and speeding public delivery so subsidy goes further.

In the end, no policy is perfect and so much will depend on the mobilization of movements. Vote YES on Proposals 2, 3 and 4 so a pro-tenant, pro-union administration can act like a public developer — faster, cheaper, fairer, while we keep building tenant power and winning the long-term investments that make housing a right.

Baiocchi is a professor of individualized studies and sociology and is the founding director of the Urban Democracy Lab. Not to say that Trump’s obsession with cutting things like cancer research or climate monitoring are good, appropriate or even legal, but their impacts will be more spread out over time. A sudden shut-off of SNAP benefits will have extreme and immediate repercussions in every single state and city in the country.

This is, of course, not just the federal government’s problem. We commend Gov. Hochul for taking quick action to shore up food assistance with a $30 million state expenditure, though the reality is that this is a tiny drop in the bucket in comparison with the billions that the federal government spends on SNAP in New York State alone.

We simply cannot replicate the level of need that the federal program covers, and neither can private philanthropy. The upshot of all of this is that even in the best case scenario, many, many people are going to go hungry as this pause takes effect.

That is bad enough in its own right, but it will have cascading effects for everyone. People who are having trouble affording food are not going to be spending much in the broader economy, are going to avoid routine medical care and end up in the ER and are going to stop paying their rent.

Children who do not receive proper nutrition are proven to absorb less from their schooling in ways that will reverberate throughout the rest of their academic and professional careers. For an administration that reports itself to be so concerned about petty crime and shoplifting, there’s hardly a better way to incentivize this than creating acute and unfulfilled needs among millions of families nationwide.

All of this, for what? The administration’s argument that it is unable to tap emergency funds simply does not pass muster, which is why Attorney General Tish James is joining a coalition of half of all U.S. states in filing suit against Rollins and the administration (frankly, it should be every state on board, as every state will be touched by this self-inflicted disaster).

Rollins and Trump are perfectly able to keep the program going, even as a subservient Congress extends this pointless shutdown over its refusal to negotiate to preserve health care subsidies.

The president is simply choosing not to, which is unsurprising for a man who often talks about how people who are less rich or successful than he is as simply losers who deserve their lot. Yet we think that beyond this being a moral atrocity, it is a political disaster for Trump, who had successfully fooled some number of working class people into thinking that he was on their side. He is prepared to stand by as millions suffer so that he can satisfy his allies’ ideological push to cut government. For shame.

 <post-id xmlns="com-wordpress:feed-additions:1">8577934</post-id>

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins speaks with reporters outside the White House, Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2025, in Washington. These students can do mathematics at a college level before learning to ride a bike. They can memorize hundreds of lines of poetry with one scan. There is no reason to demur their education.

New York City has one of the least functional Gifted and Talented programs in the United States. Reform is needed in the NYC system and nationally. If we can engender our gifted students with an education that meets their needs, we will be provided with a fleet of change-makers who can solve the world’s most intractable problems. Four changes are needed: 1) Stop testing for giftedness at age 4. These tests should be administered closer to age 12 or 13 to account for ambition and later-developed aptitudes. 2) Parents should not play a role in enrolling gifted students. Their interests are inherently conflicted; school systems should identify students with capacity via administration of an equitable exam, and the most extremely talented students should be placed in an advanced program. 3) Gifted programs need to acknowledge giftedness in the arts. We must invest in finding the Shakespeares, Stanley Kubricks, Jean-Michel Basquiats and Mozarts of the next generation. 4) No more admittance of “marginal students.” These programs should only include the students who so significantly exceed the baseline of their peers that a traditional education not only is underutilizing their skills, but is a hamper to their productivity.

This issue can’t wait. We need to design a system to accommodate the most talented children today in order for those students to change the world tomorrow. Jasper Gould

The sky won’t fall

Manhattan: I find it shameful that the Daily News has gone into full Chicken Little mode against Zohran Mamdani, calling on New Yorkers to close ranks against him and elect a disgraced has-been who has “experience” doing harm (“Andrew Cuomo for mayor,” editorial, Oct. 26). Mamdani champions human dignity, safety and the opportunity to thrive for all New Yorkers. He offers practical — yes, practical! — programs to accomplish this agenda, and will tap the best and brightest, without prejudice, to enact them. Stop the fear-mongering. Janet Barnhart

Ignored issue

Brooklyn: Mamdani does not respond to requests from the NYC Organization of Public Service Retirees for a discussion of issues impacting older adults. How can he be a mayor for all people when he disregards a large segment of the population? He does not support the Intro 1096 bill that protects in writing the health benefits for the city retirees who served at lower pay for years to obtain these benefits. This bill is not even brought up for a vote by Adrienne Adams, speaker of the City Council, who also does not support it. Jessica Balter

Busted?

Stony Point, N.Y.: If Mamdani is elected and somehow pulls free buses out of his back pocket, does my company in Rockland County still have to pay an MTA tax? Something seems out of line here. Rob Riccardelli

Enemy on the ballot

High Bridge, N.J.: Too many New Yorkers have been smoking those funny cigarettes lately. How else can you explain the current scenario? A job candidate comes into your office and proceeds to dazzle you with his smile, charisma, oratory and potential. You ask for his resume and he has none. Then you hire him? That’s what’s happening next Tuesday when the impossible becomes reality — Mamdani, totally unqualified and most likely a communist, becomes your mayor. On record, he’s for attacking capitalism, billionaires, white people, cops, supermarkets and the need for prisons. And just yesterday, we heard his father in a 2022 video equate Abraham Lincoln to Adolf Hitler! I worked and lived in New York for more than 40 years. The decent, smart and hardworking people in the city deserve a better future. Say no to a modern-day Fidel Castro, who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor until eventually, everyone became poor. Dennis Ferrere

No two ways

Far Rockaway: Mamdani reminds me of a passage of Scripture given to me from my minister (sister): “A double-minded man is unstable in all his ways” (James 1:8). Ora Reed

Don’t count him out

Merrick, L.I.: In 1970, New York voters were electing a U.S senator. Rockefeller Republican Charles Goodell was running against Democrat Richard Ottinger. Goodell was seen as too moderate by much of the GOP and conservatives, so they convinced businessman James Buckley, brother of conservative icon William F. Buckley, to run as the Conservative Party candidate. Political observers, the media community and pollsters gave Buckley little chance. But on Election Day, there were a lot of black eyes. Buckley won with 38.2% of the vote to Ottinger’s 36.7% — a less than 2% victory. Goodell came in third. The liberal vote was split. To all the experts telling us that Curtis Sliwa can’t win, maybe you all should wait until next Wednesday. Michael Apo

Subway guardian

Camden, N.J.: I should say, being an outsider and taking a sneak peek looking in, that many times I view New York City through rose-colored glasses. For that reason, from his young adult days, Sliwa appeared very dandy and dapper before the media as he and his self-proclaimed troops battled all villains that were during his personal stop-the-violence campaign. He was absolutely beautiful with NYC then. The entire nation looked up at him. Nowadays, reported assaults on the subways continue to be pathetic. He is surely needed. Wayne E. Williams

Korea’s kingmaking

Auburndale: Did South Korea give President Trump a golden crown to mock him or to troll the American people? Or do they want to crown him in their own country? Cathi Venis

Going nuclear

Manhattan: Trump is calling for the Pentagon to resume nuclear weapons testing for the first time in more than 30 years. It looks like he’s ramping up his efforts to win the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Enrico Rizzo

Make it work

North Branford, Conn.: Why is the president not doing his prime job of seeing that the United States government functions smoothly? He should demand that our current fiscal mess be set right. From his actions, he probably doesn’t have a clue that people are starving and/or working without pay. His place now is to forget lobbying for tariffs and sit in on a joint meeting of the full House and Senate and stay there until this nonsense ends. Stephen Syrotiak

Stop payment

Aiken, S.C.: I recently watched an interview on Sean Hannity’s Fox News show with Sen. Lindsey Graham requesting support from the public on a new bill he’s submitting to curb elected officials from having government shutdowns. Graham suggested that politicians should not get a paycheck when shutting down our government. Sean made light of the situation about Graham getting a paycheck, but Graham responded that he’s giving his pay to a charity, which you don’t hear every day. I wrote about this previously and suggested that all personnel in positions that are a necessity, like the military, federal law enforcement, Social Security administrators and air traffic controllers, should have a bill that exempts them from being used as pawns by a bunch of soulless radicals who aren’t representing the people’s best interest. I suggest calling the senator’s office or writing to give him the support he asked for. Gregory J. Topliff

Pennies for the poor

Brooklyn: I received a notice from the Social Security office. The cost of living adjustment for 2026 is 2.8%. The people who decided this must be high on something — 2.8% is not even close to the increase I or anyone I know is experiencing. I texted and spoke to as many people as I could find to see if they agree with SSI. One-third said a big no. Another third said that it is just not possible. The rest have ways of expressing themselves such as, “Why does the government lie to us? Aren’t they embarrassed to say 2.8?” No one — and I mean no one — believes that. I would love to see exactly how they estimate the COLA, and maybe one of our representatives could explain it, because I just don’t get it. That $79 a month I will get doesn’t even cover one of the many increases in basic services I received this year. The average increase is just $50 a month. If you cannot be out in the sun, have a milk allergy or abide by a strict vegan diet, you may have a vitamin D insufficiency but a supplement will help to provide the essential nutrients needed for proper health. For a generous amount of vitamin D available at an affordable price, Now Foods vitamin D 5000 IU Softgels is the top choice.

What to know before you buy a vitamin D supplement

Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency

If you think you have a vitamin D insufficiency, consult with your doctor and get a blood test. A normal test will reveal a level of 30 ng/mL or higher of vitamin D. If your level is in the 20-29.9 ng/mL range, you suffer from vitamin D insufficiency, while less than 20 ng/mL indicates a vitamin D deficiency.

Vitamin D’s many functions

When your body is exposed to sunlight, it produces vitamin D which is essential for healthy bones and teeth. Without it, your bones will become weak and brittle. The vitamin also plays a crucial role in helping your body to absorb calcium from food that is passed through your small intestine. It also regulates the amount of calcium and phosphorus in your bloodstream and helps your body maintain a strong immune system.

The essential vitamin D

Vitamin D is an essential vitamin along with vitamins A, E, C, K, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, B9 and B12. It is the only vitamin that your body can produce while all the others must be consumed by either food or supplements. Before your body can use it, vitamin D must be converted into a hormone called activated vitamin D or calcitriol. As a fat-soluble vitamin, vitamin D is best absorbed with high-fat foods which are then stored in your liver and body’s fatty tissue.

What to look for in a quality vitamin D supplement

Vitamin D forms

There are many ways to get the proper amount of vitamin D. Whether you opt for softgels, tablets, gummies or drops, each type of vitamin D supplement is effective. Gummies can have added sugar, so be sure to read the label carefully. If you have digestive issues, you should try vitamin D drops or softgels, because they are easier for your stomach to absorb than tablets.

Vitamin D and vitamin K

These vitamins both work to regulate calcium in both your bones and blood, so finding a supplement that contains both will provide your body with the essential nutrients you need for good health.

Vitamin D with magnesium

Magnesium helps your body metabolize vitamin D, so taking a vitamin that has both may help prevent a vitamin D deficiency.

USP-certified

A USP-verified mark on a dietary supplement means that the product contains the ingredients that are listed on its label. This verification ensures you are getting the full value of the product that you pay for.

How much you can expect to spend on a vitamin D supplement

The most inexpensive form of a vitamin D supplement is a tablet, and you can usually find a quality brand for under $10. If you are looking for softgels or gummy vitamins, they can cost up to $25 for a bottle.

Vitamin D supplement FAQ

How much vitamin D do I need a day?

A. For people ages one to 70, the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D is 600 IU (international units). The average vitamin D supplement is between 1,000-5,000 IU. You should take between 1,000-2,000 IU each day unless your doctor prescribes differently. Some studies have reported higher doses may contribute to kidney stones, nausea or vomiting.

Does the sun give you vitamin D?

A. The sun’s direct rays on your skin will help your body produce vitamin D. When you are exposed to the UVB rays in natural sunlight, the “sunshine vitamin” will help your body to produce vitamin D out of the cholesterol in your skin. This process is called “vitamin D synthesis.”

What’s the best vitamin D supplement to buy?

Top vitamin D supplement

Now Foods vitamin D 5000 IU Softgels

What you need to know: This potent pick offers a generous amount of vitamin D and comes with a reasonable price tag.

What you’ll love: Each veggie softgel contains 5,000 IU for maximum benefit and is free of soy and GMOs. Still, checking your device’s hardware is fairly straightforward if you know what you’re looking for. Mostly, you’ll want to figure out what type of SD card you need and how much storage you need before making a purchase. This Lexar Professional 128GB 2000x UHS-II SDXC SD Memory Card is perfect for SDXC SD card systems and offers plenty of memory.

What to know before you buy an SD memory card

Use

Depending on how you plan to use your SD card and how much storage you need, some cards may work better or worse — or not at all — for what you need. The best SD memory cards should have enough storage for your needs. Whether you’re a casual photographer, professional videographer or just need hardware for moving files around, SD cards are an excellent tool.

Types of SD memory cards

SD memory cards come in three main configurations: standard SD and newer SDHC and SDXC cards. SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards all feature the same physical hardware, though older devices may not support newer SDHC and SDXC memory card hardware. Many modern SDXC- and SDHC-compatible devices do support original SD cards, though older SD-only devices may not support SDXC or SDHC memory cards. For that reason, it’s important to check the supported memory card types on your device to ensure compatibility.

MicroSD cards and adapters

MicroSD cards feature entirely different physical hardware than standard SD, SDHC and SDXC cards. MicroSD cards are supported by many devices, including the commonly used Nintendo Switch. While microSD cards are smaller than SD cards, you can also find microSD memory card adapters that let you use the storage devices with standard SD card ports.

What to look for in a quality SD memory card

Storage capacity

An SD card’s storage capacity is the most obvious factor that buyers consider when choosing between models. Depending on how many and what size files you plan to store, you may require more or less storage capacity. Different media forms also require different storage capacities. For example, those shooting high-resolution video will require more storage than those shooting casual photos. Others using SD cards for simple file transfers may not require as much storage. SD cards, whether standard or microSD, can range in storage capacity from as low as 2 gigabytes to as much as 1 terabyte.

Compatibility

Ultimately, it’s important to check your device for SDHC and SDXC compatibility. It’s also worth checking whether you have an SD or microSD port, as the two are not the same size and can’t be used interchangeably. Ultimately, newer technology can typically support older, standard SD technology, though older standard SD devices may not necessarily support newer SDHC or SDXC cards.

Durability and carrying cases

SD cards are one of the more durable pieces of equipment used for file storage. Most SD cards are rated for things like moisture, temperature changes and X-rays, which can be harmful to some electronics. While they are durable, many also elect to get SD cards that include carrying cases. This can avoid putting that durability to the test, without compromising how much travel you may need to take with your memory card.

How much you can expect to spend on SD memory cards

Cheap SD memory cards may cost as little as $10. SD cards with higher storage and faster file processing will usually range from $30-$250.

SD memory cards FAQ

What kind of SD memory cards should you use for 4K video?

A. Ultimately, the type of SD memory card you need may be heavily limited by your equipment. In general, however, SDXC and SDHC provide improved transfer speeds and performance over regular SD Cards. Check your camera’s or video camera’s compatibility for SDXC and SDHC memory cards. Whether you can use SDHC and SDXC memory cards or you need regular SD cards, choosing one with a high volume of file storage is key for 4K video.

Do SD memory cards wear out?

A. Yes. SD memory cards do wear out after long periods of use, and to varying degrees depending on how the SD card is manufactured. In most cases, an SD card will offer the user over 10 years of life.

What are the best SD memory cards to buy?

Top SD memory card

Lexar Professional 128GB 2000x UHS-II SDXC SD Memory Card

What you need to know: This memory card offers extremely high file transfer speeds and plenty of space for the needs of most.

What you’ll love: This offers transfer speeds up to 300MB/s and total storage of 128GB. During the YTT, the studio posted pics on social media, and I was in one pic.

Within hours, Sue, a coworker, sent me a screenshot of the post and asked if it was me. I confirmed. Thereafter, Sue began frantically texting me about how she wanted to attend a YTT and told people at work teaching yoga was her passion. Granted, Sue neither practiced yoga regularly nor mentioned ever wanting to attend a YTT in the 10-plus years we’ve worked together.

Within weeks, Sue signed up for the next YTT at the same studio I obtained my certification. There’s a ton of yoga studios in town. Sue now works at the same studio as I do, and she completed a similar training I completed shortly after I completed it with the same vendor.

Sue stalks my social media page and questions me about my teaching schedule, collaborations, associations and inflates our friendship status behind my back when she meets people in the movement community.

I’ve been intentionally avoiding Sue’s calls/texts and at work. Yoga is my refugee, and I needed something separate from work.

How do I tell Sue to find her own life path and seek her own opportunities instead of copying me?

– No-go Yoga

Dear Yoga: Sue’s intensity makes me really curious about how she runs her classes. But, as with any yoga practice, or position, intensity is sometimes in the eye (or body) of the beholder. It’s possible she’s misjudging how she’s coming across to you. No harm in that, per se, but it does require a resetting of boundaries.

She might see you as a friend, or even a friend-tor (a friend/mentor hybrid). It can be awkward to correct that misconception, but it’s necessary.

Come from a place of what you need, rather than focusing on what she’s doing. Use “I” statements to help with clarity. “I’d prefer to keep my yoga practice separate from my work life. I’m happy that you’ve found this community, but I need a little space here to focus on my teaching and practice. I won’t be as available to you outside of work, and I wanted to be upfront about that so that intentions aren’t muddled.”

This might be tough for Sue to hear, but directness allows you to state what you need and clears a path for her to process in whatever way she needs to.

Dear Eric: My husband of 15 years suddenly tells me he fathered a daughter outside of our marriage. She is 5 years old.

He wants to bring the child to me to be her mother and bring her up as my own. What disturbed me is he kept this from me for five years. I am deeply hurt and betrayed. Please, how do I handle these situations?

– Betrayed Wife

Dear Wife: There’s a lot to be disturbed by here. First and of chief importance, your husband doesn’t have a unilateral say over what happens to this little girl. Presuming that her mother is still alive, she has legal rights. Whoever has custody of the child currently also has legal rights and responsibilities. If the child is in crisis, the situation is a little different, but that doesn’t seem to be the case here.

Either way, whatever plan your husband has worked out needs to follow the proper channels. This means that a family court or social worker may need to weigh in before the child changes residences. At the very least, a legal custody agreement needs to be reached. If he hasn’t shared any planning of this sort with you, then that’s a good place to start the conversation.

But word one in any conversation needs to be the answer to the question: do you, letter writer, want to raise a child with your husband? I daresay you don’t, at least not right now. You’re reeling from a betrayal that he hasn’t yet addressed, at least not according to your letter. It’s inappropriate and unhealthy to bring a child into a home so rife with conflict and hurt. And even if you weren’t hurt, you still have every right to make decisions about when and how you step into parenthood.

He’s gone about this all wrong and he needs to go back to square one. What does that look like? It starts with an apology, an acknowledgement of what he did wrong and a request for forgiveness. Then, a conversation about the state of your marriage. I’d suggest, at the very least, marriage counseling, to get you both on the same page. And you should explore individual counseling, as well. You have a say here, including a say in whether you decide to stay in this marriage.

(Send questions to R.
