class="widget-title">Friday 13th, unlucky for some but for Team Soggy Moggy it would be the beginning of a fabulous weekend!</h3><div class="textwidget"><p>This would be the first Dart TT for Bognor Sailing Club for a long time and it was clear from the first contact that they wanted to make a great impression – when I called ahead to check they would have somewhere we could pitch our tent they were incredibly friendly and were shocked that we were travelling all the way from South Wales – so much so when we arrived around 9pm Friday evening they were waiting in the road for us and we were greeted with an excited “Wales has arrived!” Never have we felt so welcome to a club before. Fish & chips for supper, a quick pint (well, two) then we set out to pitch the tent…which a broken pole made difficult but we bodged it and got a surprisingly good sleep.</p><p>The next day we awoke to birds singing, the sun shining and the breakfast buzz in the club. Unfortunately the wind was already blowing quite hard and the race team were dubious at whether we should launch. They sent out a rib to check the sea state as we all hovered around the Club weather station which was already showing a consistent 22mph with gusts of 24mph. This was backed up by Moggy flags violently flapping in front of the Club. We watched on as the rib bounced into and over waves occasionally disappearing, and when they came back in a decision was made to postpone racing for the day and they would try and get 4 races in on Sunday. Gutted but not defeated – half the fleet went off to play mini golf and the other half went for walks or relaxed in the Club’s garden. That evening we were treated to a great local band – drinking, dancing and music was enjoyed by all.</p><p>The next morning, we awoke to the buzz of breakfast but also the sound of boats being rigged – the weather still bright and sunny but with a much more manageable breeze and sea state. Everyone was excited to get out onto the water. We launched, safely navigating the rocky reef that we’d been warned about and we took a few turns to suss out the start area.</p><p>Race 1 got underway with a massively port biased line. This allowed us along with a lot of the traveling fleet to hit the pin end and make significant gains on the first leg. It was perfect conditions for Soggy Moggy; nicely powered up we stayed with the top of the fleet recording one of our best finishes to date in a high caliber fleet, 8th of 23.</p><p>Buoyed by race one the second race got under way with the wind having built. The single handers and a couple of others decided it was getting too much and headed for shore, along with the winners of Race 1 who suffered gear failure. Determined to prove out initial performance wasn’t a fluke we made another good start and unbelievably found ourselves in the 4th at the windward mark and within touching distance of the leaders. With the bare aways getting faster and surfing downwind we had a great tussle with the resident Frenchman of the circuit Francois sadly losing out to him on the run to finish. However, we were more than a little happy recording a 5th! Apparently race 1 hadn’t been a fluke after all.</p><p>The wind continued to be build in to race 3 and the sea state had gone from not flat to definitely lumpy (and this might be an under statement). The starboard beat was particularly punishing with Rach absorbing the boat repeatedly falling out of the sky. As we kept good speed in the conditions swapping places with Debs & Barry who we’d found ourselves around all day. Another 8th in the bag and we were super stoked. However, Caleb and Chloe deserve special mention for finishing in 6th floating over the line inverted having pitchpoled on the reach to the line.</p><p>By race four the conditions had reduced the fleet to a total of 9 boats as the sea state was becoming increasingly tricky to manage. With Rach best described as knackered Ezri helmed from the wire as we continued to smash through the waves on the upwind leg. We both held our breath on the downwind needing to depower to stop what felt like an inevitable pitch which only almost happened once. I think that all those that who raced in race 4 were ecstatic to the see the rib flying S at the gate the on the 2nd lap. Finishing 8th and feeling tired but on a massive high we headed for shore where the shore dump awaited us, thankfully the amazing Bognor land team were on had to catch and get us out of the surf quickly.</p><p>Safe to say we were both absolutely buzzing with excitement, this had been our best TT yet and probably the heaviest conditions. We got straight into our routines packing moggy up onto her trailer once more and headed in for prize giving. Finishing 6th overall we narrowly missed out on the main prizes but were delighted to receive 2nd in handicap!
