  39. <p>The Officer of the Day (OOD) is responsible for running the racing for any Club level event. This duty is usually shared among the sailors participating in the series, but it can be carried out by anyone. Don’t worry — you won’t be scored DNC; instead, you’ll receive half points.</p>
  40. <h4><strong data-start="172" data-end="191">Before the</strong> <strong>Day</strong>:</h4>
  41. <ul>
  42. <li>Check the weather forecast several days in advance to understand the expected conditions.</li>
  43. </ul>

  45. The Day Before / Morning Of:</strong></h4>
  46. <ul>
  47. <li>Send a WhatsApp message to the <em data-start="353" data-end="362">Sailors</em> and <em data-start="367" data-end="375">Safety</em> groups either 24 hours before or on the morning of the race. Include details of the race start time and ask who will be on safety duty and who will be sailing. Use this communication to discuss the weather, tide, and wind conditions with participants.</li>

  50. <h4>Things To Take With You</h4>
  51. <ul>
  52. <li>A timing device such as a race watch, app, or regular watch.</li>
  53. <li>Flags or paddles for start signals.</li>
  54. <li>A whistle or hooter for sound signals.</li>
  55. <li>A pen and paper to record timings and positions (a waterproof pad is highly recommended).</li>
  56. <li>A radio, especially if the RIB does not have a fixed unit.</li>
  57. <li>Warm layers, water, and snacks, as you will be sitting in a RIB for the duration of the races, which may be over two hours.</li>

  60. Arrival and Preparation:</strong></h4>
  61. <ul>
  62. <li data-start="631" data-end="834">Arrive at the club at least one and a half hours before the scheduled start time.</li>
  63. <li data-start="631" data-end="834">Aim to be on the water with the safety boats at least 30 minutes before the race begins.</li>
  64. <li data-start="631" data-end="834">Ensure there is a sign-on sheet available in the foyer of the Club so that all participants can sign on.</li>
  65. <li data-start="631" data-end="834">Discuss and advise on the expected course layout, which may vary depending on the types of boats taking part.

  67. <li data-start="631" data-end="834">It can be helpful to display your expected course on a whiteboard in the foyer and or in the far boatshed.</li>

  80. <p>The diagram below shows a typical course used for club racing with dinghys sailing a triangle and catamarans sailing a windward leyward with a longer first leg than the dinghys. Depending on where the course is laid sometimes you may need to lay extra catamaran mark at the bottom of course.</p>
  81. <p>Whilst this course is ideal for accommodating all classes of boats, as OOD you can use your discretion based on the boats particating. For example if there are no catamarans you would not need the additional windward mark. Equally you could set a course with 4 marks for all boats; as long as the sailors have a course to sail around they will be happy.</p>
  82. <p>When setting the course or instructing the other boat where to lay the marks the most important ones to get right are the windward mark and start pin. Try to ensure that the windward mark is straight up wind from the start line so that boats cannot sail straight to it. The start pin should make a line 90 degrees across the wind between itself and your RIB. You can adjust the line if needed by lengthening or shortening your anchor line.</p>

  93. <li data-start="1057" data-end="1209">Use the usual start sequence of <em data-start="1112" data-end="1125">5, 4, 1, GO</em> using either flags or paddles along with a sound signal to indicate where you are in the sequence (see the diagram below).</li>
  94. <li data-start="1057" data-end="1209">Each race should last approximately 40 minutes, with two races per session.</li>
  95. <li data-start="1057" data-end="1209">Record the time taken for each boat to complete a lap, noting the boat type and sail number.</li>
  96. </ul>
  97. <p data-start="1386" data-end="1695">If wind conditions are light and it is taking longer than expected for boats to complete a lap, consider reducing the number of laps. Conversely, if conditions are strong and lap times are short, you may add an extra lap. You may also choose to shorten or lengthen the course depending on the circumstances.</p>

  144. <p data-start="276" data-end="397">“It was a fantastic day for Wales in wild, wet and very windy conditions,” said Welsh Rowing senior coach James Walker.</p>
  145. <p data-start="399" data-end="558">The Welsh squad featured athletes from Fishguard and Goodwick Jemima RC, Mumbles RC, Warrington RC, Sunderland RC, Hexham RC, Marlow RC and Hartpury College.</p>
  146. <p data-start="560" data-end="700">The competition comprised seven categories — three senior, three junior and one under-23 — with three of the events featuring mixed crews.</p>
