24.
HULU SELANGOR, May 12 — The victory of Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Pang Sock Tao in the Kuala Kubu Baru (KKB) by-election today is a clear signal that the people want to be represented by an assemblyman aligned with both the state and federal governments, according to political analysts.

 25.
 26.
The analysts said the victory of the former press secretary to the Housing and Local Government Minister was partly due to the excellent track record of the former assemblyman Lee Kee Hiong and proved that the people have confidence in the unity government and want development continuity.

 27.
 28.
Associate Professor Awang Azman Awang Pawi, a socio-political analyst at Universiti Malaya, said the voters believed that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari had brought political stability, economic prosperity and harmony and this greatly contributed to Pang’s success.

 29.
 30.
“The voters are confident that the federal government led by Anwar and the Selangor government led by Amirudin can steer the country and state to greater heights,” he told Bernama here tonight.

 31.
 32.
Awang Azman said attempts by certain parties urging the Indian community to boycott the by-election seemed to have failed, proving that voters were wise in rejecting campaigns using the 3R (race, religion and royalty) sentiments.

 33.
 34.
Jazimin Zakaria, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Administrative Science and Policy Studies, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Kedah, said the resounding win of the Unity Government candidate demonstrates the maturity of voters in evaluating issues raised by the opposition during the campaign.

 35.
 36.
“The voters wisely evaluated the issues raised by the opposition as non-critical, including matters related to vernacular education, when what the people want is simply balance in the political landscape of the country,” he said.

 37.
 38.
Professor Datuk Sivamurugan Pandian, senior lecturer in political sociology at the Centre for Social Studies, Universiti Sains Malaysia, believes that factors such as having a good educational background, experience in government administration and politics, and having good relations with the federal and state governments contributed to Pang’s victory.

 39.
 40.
“Another factor contributing to PH’s success is the unity and commitment of all parties in the Unity Government coalition who campaigned for the Unity Government candidate,” he said.

 41.

 55.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — The victory of Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Kuala Kubu Baharu by-election last night signals a clear mandate for the unity government to redouble efforts in attracting investors and subsequently revive and strengthen the country’s economy, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

 56.
 57.
In a post on Facebook, Anwar said the unity government will continue to fulfil this trust and responsibility well for the people.

 58.
 59.
“During PKR’s 25th anniversary celebration in Sentul tonight, I began my speech by congratulating the Pakatan Harapan candidate who successfully defended the Kuala Kubu Baharu state seat,” he said.

 60.
 61.
He also congratulated and thanked the unity government parties’ machinery whom he said displayed extraordinary levels of unity and high spirits to defend the seat.

 62.
 63.
The four-cornered contest saw PH candidate from DAP, Pang Sock Tao, securing victory with a 3,869-vote majority over Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional), Hafizah Zainuddin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Nyau Ke Xin (Independent).

 64.
 65.
Meanwhile, Anwar also reminded all party members, especially the younger generation, to embrace idealism and not be swayed by the temptation of amassing wealth.

 66.
 67.
He said the talent of PKR’s young leaders must be honed, adding that they must prepared to continue the struggle for justice in bringing about changes. — Bernama

 80.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 12 — The success of the Pakatan Harapan candidate in winning the Kuala Kubu Baru state by-election is proof of the spirit of togetherness of the component parties in the Unity Government.

 81.
 82.
Umno president Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said that although the UMDAP (Umno-DAP) issue was played by certain parties in this election, the bond between Barisan Nasional (BN), PH and the component parties remained intact as the backbone of the government.

 83.
 84.
“And this pillar must be strengthened, I have stated that the DAP leadership helped BN candidates a lot in the by-elections in the past and this is the first time a DAP candidate contested in the by-election and it would not be wrong if we repay the favour they have shown.

 85.
 86.
“Today’s success is proof that if we have great resilience no matter what is thrown at us by our political opponents, we will remain strong, remain intact to defend this Unity Government,” he said.

 87.
 88.
He said this at a press conference after Umno’s 78th Anniversary celebration at Menara Dato Onn, World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) here tonight.

 89.
 90.
Ahmad Zahid also congratulated the Pakatan Harapan candidate and party following their success in the by-election.

 91.
 92.
“Thank you also to BN and Umno machinery, as well as the Kuala Kubu Baru machinery throughout the state of Selangor including friends from other parts of the country,” he said.

 93.
 94.
Pang Sock Tao who contested on the Pakatan Harapan (PH) ticket representing the Unity Government won with a majority of 3,869 votes, defeating her three challengers Khairul Azhari Saut (Perikatan Nasional), Nyau Ke Xin (independent) and Hafizah Zainuddin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia).

 109.
HULU SELANGOR, May 12 — Yesterday, Kuala Kubu Baru voters went to the ballots again for the second time in less than a year after the death of Pakatan Harapan's Lee Kee Hiong in March.

 110.
 111.
Her successor representing the PH-Barisan Nasional unity coalition, Pang Sock Tao, was declared the winner with a majority of 3,869 votes — slightly lower than Lee's 4,119.

 112.
 113.
The former press secretary to the Housing and Local Government Minister polled 14,000 votes to beat Perikatan Nasional (PN) candidate Khairul Azhari Saut, who obtained 10,131 votes.

 114.
 115.
The other two candidates from Parti Rakyat Malaysia and the independent did not even receive 200 votes each.

 116.
 117.
Analysts polled by Malay Mail had called the result prior to the election, and the predicted status quo was one of the reasons why this poll was not generally considered exciting.

 118.
 119.
Here are some takeaways by our team from the campaigning:

 120.
 121.

 122.

 123.

 124.

 126.
A crowd listening the Ceramah Umum Perikatan Nasional in Kuala Kubu Baharu April 30, 2024. — Picture by Hari Anggara

 127.

 128.

 129.

 130.
 131.

 132.
 133.
1. Voter fatigue is real — so what's next?

 134.
 135.
While it may seem like campaigning was fiery on social media platforms, the reality on the ground was very much different.

 136.
 137.
When approached by Malay Mail, several residents here were not keen to talk about politics, citing sensitivity as the reason for opting out of the conversations. The locals seemingly like the town as it is: Serene and peaceful.

 138.
 139.
Perikatan Nasional (PN) had attempted to drum up support by lining up several top leaders to speak at one of the night ceramahs, but instead it had to start 30 minutes later than scheduled due to the many empty seats. Crowds only started to form when former Selangor menteri besar Datuk Seri Azmin Ali took the stage, but even then it was hardly a large crowd.

 140.
 141.
The final voter turnout was 61.51 per cent. It was among the lowest for by-elections after the 15th general election.

 142.
 143.
Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research (NASR) senior fellow Azmi Hassan told Malay Mail that voters have started showing signs of election fatigue.

 144.
 145.
"Not only that, but they don’t see the urgency of going out to vote because nothing will change. It’s the politicians who have a point to prove,” he said.

 146.
 147.
This was especially true in KKB — this was the third election in three years after the 15th general election in 2022 and the Selangor state election last year.

 148.
 149.
2. Indian community at forefront here, but are they now kingmakers?

 150.
 151.
While the constituency is predominantly Malay, both PH and PN were chasing the votes of the Indian community.

 152.
 153.
In the semi-urban constituency in Selangor of roughly 40,000 voters, Malays make up some 49.6 per cent of the electoral roll compared to the ethnic Chinese (30.6 per cent), ethnic Indians (18 per cent) and others (2.1 per cent).

 154.
 155.
According to pollster Ilham Centre's survey, while Malay voters seemingly sided with PN and vice versa with the Chinese community and PH, the ethnic Indians could be the "kingmakers".

 156.
 157.
The minority community's support for PH has been waning, due to the perception that they have been taken for granted by the ruling government, and that their needs are not being met.

 158.
 159.
Seeing this as an opportunity, PN was honing in on the 7,200 Indian voters here, knowing that it was unlikely to get any support from the Chinese.

 160.
 161.
In an apparent effort to broaden its appeal among non-Malay voters, PN also recently welcomed the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP) into its ranks as its newest component, led by former MIC leader P. Punithan, who was also appointed as a deputy chairman of the PN coalition.

 162.
 163.
It remains to be seen whether this trend will continue in future by-elections, and whether the Indian community will reap any rewards over this.

 164.
 165.

 166.

 167.

 171.

 172.

 173.

 174.
 175.
3. Perikatan’s identity politics rejected once again

 176.
 177.
Pang’s triumph was expected by several political observers who felt that Perikatan Nasional’s campaign, which harped on Malay-Muslim issues, was deemed ineffective in a mixed ethnic seat in Selangor.

 178.
 179.
llham Centre, for example, had said PN’s approach had reached the saturation point and highlighted that the pact is not campaigning in Malay-majority Kelantan, Terengganu or Kedah.

 180.
 181.
PN Deputy Chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu denied this commentary, saying that the reception it received from the grassroots here did not reflect the observation.

 182.
 183.
"If you want to say that we are saturated, we can see here, from my own personal experience, when we go down to the field, the support is so good and every time we walk from house to house we are greeted so well.

 184.
 185.
"They have given feedback and they have encouraged us to work harder to win the upcoming elections,” he said in a press conference last night.

 186.
 187.
In the run-up to the campaign period, PN component parties had somewhat argued with each other as Gerakan wanted to maintain its position as a candidate in the seat last year

 188.
 189.
However, PN election director Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor insisted that a Malay candidate should be fielded as it would have given them a better chance of securing a win.

 190.
 191.
PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari's strategy of highlighting Pang’s vernacular school background may similarly have backfired.

 192.
 193.
So far, PN had only managed to win three by-elections since 15th general election: one of them back in 2022, and the other two were in Terengganu where PAS was incumbent.

 194.
 195.
Will this now force PN to change tack?

 208.
HULU SELANGOR, May 11 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) had threatened that it would file a suit in the Election Court over alleged vote-buying by the government after realising it would lose in Kuala Kubu Baru, Selangor Pakatan Harapan (PH) said today.

 209.
 210.
Its chairman Amiruddin Shari again denied the allegation, saying PH had conducted a harmonious campaign during the by-election.

 211.
 212.
“It was as if they admitted to losing by saying that they would submit a petition three days before the by-election was held," he told the press here.

 213.
 214.
“In an election, it was a method to review the by-election but it was everyone’s right to decide. But we believed we have conducted an effective campaign without slandering as generated in PN’s campaign including caused confusion in several matters."

 215.
 216.
The Election Commission (EC) announced that PH candidate Pang Sock Tao has won the state seat with a 3,869-vote majority over PN's Khairul Azhari Saut.

 217.
 218.
The voter turnout stood at 61.51 per cent, ranking among the lowest for by-elections following the 15th general election.

 219.
 220.
On Monday, PAS' Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan warned that PN would file an election petition to court if PH wins the Kuala Kubu Baru by-election.

 221.
 222.
The PN chief whip said that the coalition has evidence that the unity government has abused its funds, which it said amounted to bribing the voters.

 223.
 224.
The PAS secretary-general said a precedent had been set in Kuala Terengganu, after the Election Court last year invalidated Datuk Ahmad Amzad Hashim’s victory during the 15th general election.

 225.
 226.
He also claimed that PN has video evidence and notes of the alleged electoral offences, but did not disclose them to the media.

 227.
 228.
Earlier this month, electoral watchdog Bersih criticised the RM5.21 million announcement by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) to upgrade public infrastructure facilities in Kuala Kubu Baru ahead of the by-election.

 229.
 230.
This comes as Minister Nga Kor Ming announced an allocation totalling RM5.21 million to upgrade public infrastructure facilities under the supervision of the Hulu Selangor Municipal Council (MPHS) and the Chinese New Village Project in Hulu Selangor.

 231.
 232.
Nga, during his visit to Kuala Kubu Baru, said the allocation included 14 projects worth RM4.82 million to be implemented by MPHS and the Village Community Management Council.

 233.
 234.
The move was defended by Selangor PH, which said the announcement was made before the campaigning period and therefore cannot be described as vote buying.

 247.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reminded all party members, especially the younger generation, to appreciate the party’s struggle and not forget the ‘power’ they have when they become the government.

 248.
 249.
The Prime Minister said the talents of young leaders need to be polished and ready to continue the struggle because many individuals who founded the party’s struggle including Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and friends are getting old and some are infirm.

 250.
 251.
Anwar said the young generation of PKR should not forget the principles of struggle for 25 years since the establishment of PKR.

 252.
 253.
“These people (in the past) fought without reward, without position but only sacrifice. I hope the new generation will not forget their service.

 254.
 255.
“As I always say that power is able to amaze, that power is something glittering. So remember the fundamentals of the struggle, don’t use power to hoard wealth, don’t use power to lose idealism, that we were entrusted to make changes,” he said when speaking at PKR’s 25h Anniversary Celebration at Sentul Depot here tonight.

 256.
 257.
Also present were PKR Advisory Council chairman Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, deputy president Rafizi Ramli, secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, Information chief Fahmi Fadzil, Wanita chief Fadhlina Sidek and Youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim.

 258.
 259.
Anwar said that although PKR was ‘attacked’ with various accusations by the opposition, PKR as a party in the Unity Government still fought for the policies and rights of the people.

 260.
 261.
“We see for example in the KKB (Kuala Kubu Baharu) by-election campaign, this issue continues to be played out. How can it be that in Malaysia with a Muslim majority representatives in parliament, wants to deny the rights of Chinese, Indian, Dayak, or Iban, Kadazan to remain represented.

 262.
 263.
“I want to say that Keadilan (PKR) will continue to defend the constitution and this country so that it is peaceful and every race must get fair representation (rights),” he said.

 264.
 265.
The Prime Minister insisted that the Unity Government will continue to support the rights of the Malays and Bumiputeras in a fair manner and will not be moved by attacks in the form of narrow racial sentiments.

 266.
 267.
Touching on foreign policy, Anwar said the Malaysian Government will defend the policy of a free and independent country in establishing relations with foreign countries.

 268.
 269.
“We still defend the principle of freedom and independence. And while there are issues arising from our relations with the West, with the United States and Europe we should work on strengthening ties and at the same time relations with China, Japan and South Korea continue to be improved as well as with important neighbours in Asean,” he said.

 270.
 271.
He said this includes the conflict in Gaza, Palestine where the Malaysian government is committed and determined to fight for the issue in the eyes of the world. — Bernama

 329.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke has today praised Pakatan Harapan's (PH) win in the Kuala Kubu Baru state by-election, highlighting that the pact has increased its support among Orang Asli and uniformed personnel voters.

 330.
 331.
Loke also divulged that PH candidate Pang Sock Tao had kept roughly the number of majority votes received by her late predecessor, which was unprecedented since the pact only predicted a slim 1,000-vote margin.

 332.
 333.
"We had a good campaign and the win shows this unity government's strength. The trend of support from the voters is the same in Kuala Kubu Baru as it was before and they maintained their support today.

 334.
 335.
"Not only did we manage to hold our previous supporters we also managed to win over some Orang Asli and uniformed personnel's votes which in the end was close to 3,800 more votes than the opposition," he told reporters at PKR's 25th anniversary carnival in Sentul here.

 336.
 337.
The Election Commission (EC) has since confirmed that Pang won the seat with a 3,869-vote majority — a slight decline from her late predecessor's 4,119-vote majority.

 338.
 339.
Loke also said that the result showed that all members of the federal government coalition have great chemistry with each other.

 340.
 341.
"From now on we will work to develop KKB for its eco-tourism and also to help develop the area in any way possible," he added.

 342.
 343.
A total of 39,269 voters were eligible to cast their ballots today after early voting on Tuesday which saw 97 per cent or 769 police and military personnel and their spouses casting their ballots.

 344.
 345.
The voter turnout was recorded at 55.79 per cent at 4pm, among the lowest among the by-elections after the 15th general election.

 395.
HULU SELANGOR, May 11 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) has tonight conceded its defeat in the Kuala Kubu Baru state by-election after Pakatan Harapan (PH) declared its victory.

 396.
 397.
The pact's deputy chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu said that PN accepts the defeat with an open heart, but claimed that support for it in certain voting district centres in the constituency rose.

 398.
 399.
"We accept this decision with an open heart and we are determined to continue all our efforts and God willing, we will be back in Kuala Kubu Baru.

 400.
 401.
"We have seen this trend of increasing support before. So much support from young people for PN. This means support will increase over time," he told reporters in a brief press conference here.

 402.
 403.
Ahmad Faizal said he is confident that PN will soon take over other states such as Perak if the trend continues.

 404.
 405.
The Election Commission (EC) has since confirmed that Pang won the seat with a 3,869-vote majority.

 406.
 407.
The voter turnout stood at 61.51 per cent, ranking among the lowest for by-elections following the 15th general election.

 408.
 409.
With the voter turnout today hovering around 60 per cent, Ahmad Faizal said the coalition will work harder in the future to get voters out to the ballot box.

 410.
 411.
“In terms of the relatively low voting percentage, about 61 per cent, we will continue to work in the future to ensure it is higher and be the reason for our victory,” he said.

 412.
 413.
He denied that PN had been a victim of any boycott, suggesting instead that the question should instead be directed to PH.

 414.
 415.
“They recorded a lower support for themselves. So it's more towards them than us,” he said, referring to PH's slight decline in majority votes.

 416.
 417.
Meanwhile, PN candidate Khairul Azhari Saut said winning candidate Pang Sock Tao should hit the ground running as soon as possible.

 418.
 419.
“We know that throughout the campaign, I met the residents and received many complaints. There are pending complaints, so to the winning candidate, keep your promises,” he briefly said, appearing disappointed in the result.

 420.
 421.
A total of 39,269 voters were eligible to cast their ballots today after early voting on Tuesday which saw 97 per cent or 769 police and military personnel and their spouses casting their ballots.

 555.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has today urged the Malay community to not listen to fearmongering from the Opposition claiming that the majority group will lose its rights.

 556.
 557.
Speaking at PKR’s 25th anniversary carnival here, the PKR president said the country can only prosper if all ethnic groups are treated equally and this does not mean that the Bumiputera will be sidelined as a result.

 558.
 559.
“Let me say, [PKR] will always defend the Constitution and for Malaysia to be successful all races must be treated fairly,” he said in the event at the Sentul Depot here.

 560.
 561.
“Bumiputeras and Muslims will not be poor for being fair, we won’t be left behind if we help others if we give other races their rights and the right to representation.”

 562.
 563.
He said Malaysia needs to mature as a viable democracy and realise its uniqueness as a Muslim-majority country that can take pride in its democratic values.

 564.
 565.
Anwar, who is also prime minister, said that PKR has been unfairly attacked instead for its insistence to ensure equality among all ethnic groups.

 566.
 567.
“Islam’s the [religion of the federation] but in order to succeed, we must respect and honour the rights of every single citizen of this country. This is our uniqueness but we were attacked, and almost lost several seats because we defended this principle. We refused to lose our Islamicness and our Bumiputera-ness.

 568.
 569.
“Then in Kuala Kubu Baru, this sentiment continued to be played. How can we ever erode the rights of the Indian, Chinese, Kadazan, Dusun and more?” he asked.

 570.
 571.
“We have almost suffered due to the narrow-minded racist games played by the opposition but we will not change and every citizen’s right will always be upheld by [PKR],” he added.

 572.
 573.
The event was also attended by PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail, MCA president Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong and DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke.

 663.
 664.
He said players should not worry about their safety throughout the league season, which started yesterday.

 665.
 666.
Saifuddin Nasution reminded all parties to refrain from speculating on the three incidents and leave it to the police to investigate.

 667.
 668.
“(Inspector-General of Police) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain had already said there should not be any speculation as this could jeopardise police investigation.

 669.
 670.
“Police will be looking at all matters in their investigations. Arrests have also been made," he told reporters at an Aidilfitri Hi-Tea with the Persatuan Solidariti Nasional Kedah here today.

 671.
 672.
Saifuddin Nasution also reminded social media users not to upload any malicious content against any players.

 673.
 674.
“If postings inciting hatred against players are made repeatedly, certain groups might be driven into taking the law into their own hands. There should not be any actions sparking speculation,” he said.

 757.
JERTIH, May 11 — The Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan) has relocated a bull elephant which had been roaming for the past two weeks in Kampung Pak Sik in Hulu Besut, today.

 758.
 759.
Terengganu Perhilitan director Loo Kean Seong said the elephant was captured on Wednesday, after being tracked down for two days, after receiving complaints about the animal damaging the villagers’ crops.

 760.
 761.
“A total of 21 Perhilitan personnel, including from Johor and the headquarters, were involved in the operation to relocate the elephant.

 762.
 763.
“This operation was also assisted by two female elephants, namely Suria and Indah, brought from the Sungai Deka Elephant Conservation Centre, Hulu Terengganu,” he said when met by Bernama at the location today.

 764.
 765.
Loo said that the operation, which started at 8.30 this morning, was completed about three hours later.

 766.
 767.
He added that the healthy bull elephant was relocated to a more suitable and safe natural habitat.

 768.
 769.
“With the capture and relocation of this elephant, we can avoid greater losses, which are estimated to reach up to RM1 million to the villagers, since the area is filled with various types of crops such as palm oil, bananas and other crops,” he said.

 770.
 771.
In the meantime, he said each operation to catch and relocate an elephant would involve a cost of between RM50,000 and RM70,000.

 772.
 773.
He said that today’s relocation was the third operation carried out in Terengganu this year, after one each in Dendong in Besut and Merang in Setiu. — Bernama

 817.
GEORGE TOWN, May 11 — A DAP assemblyman has urged the city council to implement a master plan on the care of ancient trees to prevent any untoward incidents.

 818.
 819.
Pulau Tikus assemblyman Joshua Woo Sze Zeng said there is a need for a more aggressive plan by the Penang Island City Council (MBPP) to maintain these trees through scheduled pruning and maintenance.

 820.
 821.
“If there is a need to clear some of these dangerous trees, then the MBPP should not hesitate to do so to ensure that these public areas and roads are safe for users,” he said in a statement.

 822.
 823.
He was responding to an incident this morning when a large tree uprooted and fell over along Macalister Road, damaging vehicles and the concrete fence of a building.

 824.
 825.
“In fact, on April 26, a tree fell and damaged four cars at Lebuh Raya Scott in Pulau Tikus,” he said.

 826.
 827.
He said no one was hurt in both incidents but something must be done to prevent this from happening.

 828.
 829.
“My service centre team has been working closely with MBPP to monitor and prune trees, especially those large ones along the four ‘green corridors’ in Pulau Tikus, Jalan Kelawai, Jalan Burma, Jalan Macalister, and Jalan Utama,” he said.

 830.
 831.
He said there are hundreds of very old and large trees in these areas compared to other places.

 832.
 833.
He said the trees are important to a city’s landscape and act as “green lung” in urban setting but if MBPP needs to clear some of these “dangerous trees”, it should do so.

 834.
 835.
“Our priority is the lives of Penangites,” he said.

 919.
MELAKA, May 11 — The Ministry of Transport (MOT) is planning to establish Road Transport Department (JPJ) academies in Sabah and Sarawak as a long-term plan to ensure that members and officials in both states receive sufficient training without having to travel to the peninsula.

 920.
 921.
Its minister Anthony Loke said that thus far there are 786 JPJ officers in Sabah and 739 in Sarawak and he sees the need to establish academies in both states.

 922.
 923.
“We see that there is a need and it is better to have an academy that can train members there, but this is still in the planning stage and has not yet received budget approval.

 924.
 925.
“However, we have included the application for the construction of the academy in the 12th Malaysia Plan, so we will wait for the decision,” he told the media after officiating the department’s 78th anniversary celebration at the Melaka JPJ Academy, Tiang Dua Ayer Molek here today which was also attended by JPJ director-general Datuk Rospiagos Taha.

 926.
 927.
He stressed that currently JPJ academies only operate in peninsular Malaysia, namely the main campus in Melaka, the southern region in Johor, the eastern region in Kelantan and the northern region on Langkawi Island.

 928.
 929.
Meanwhile, he said that in line with this year’s JPJ’s anniversary celebration, themed, ‘Digitalisasi Memacu Profesionalisme JPJ’, all department’s members and officers should take the opportunity to improve the existing technology further.

 930.
 931.
“I believe that JPJ is ready to prepare a strategy to ensure the survival of the road transport ecosystem in this country, including following the trend of digitalisation which includes driver licensing services, vehicle licensing, integrated enforcement and the field of automotive engineering.

 932.
 933.
“This development has also been proven to have an impact when, up to May 10, more than nine million driving licence holders had JPJeID to access the MyJPJ application,” he said. — Bernama

 1187.
HULU SELANGOR, May 11 — Political party flags near polling centres were acceptable so long as they were at least 50m away, Election Commission (EC) deputy chairman Azmi Sharom said.

 1188.
 1189.
Responding to a question on Perikatan Nasional supporters waving their flags nearby SMK Kuala Kubu Baru, he said this was discouraged but technically not against the law.

 1190.
 1191.
“It is a problem but they have to be at least 50 metres away. As long as they keep a distance. But, you know it is what it is," he said at a press conference here today.

 1192.
 1193.
As of 11am, the voters turnout has only reached 26 per cent.

 1194.
 1195.
Azmi said that while it would be unusual for a by-election, he was hopeful that the target for a 70 per cent turnout would be reached today.

 1196.
 1197.
He said voting has been smooth and uneventful, with the result expected by 9pm.

 1198.
 1199.
The EC deputy chair also added that accessibility for senior citizens and people with disabilities has been good.

 1257.
 1258.
PUTRAJAYA, May 11 ― Malaysia welcomed the adoption of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly’s (UNGA) Resolution during the resumed Tenth Emergency Special Session yesterday, which calls for the UN Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s application for full membership in the UN, said the Foreign Ministry.

 1259.
 1260.
The ministry widely known as Wisma Putra, in a statement today, said Malaysia co-sponsored the resolution, along with 76 Member States and voted in favour of the Resolution, in line with her unwavering and long-standing position to the Palestinian cause.

 1261.
 1262.
“Malaysia will continue her efforts for the establishment of an independent and sovereign State of Palestine, based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, as well as the admission of Palestine as a full Member of the United Nations,” the statement read.

 1263.
 1264.
The ministry said the Resolution, which received 143 affirmative votes, 9 against and 25 abstentions, calls upon the UN Security Council to reconsider Palestine’s application for admission as a full UN Member State, after it was blocked by a veto last month.

 1265.
 1266.
The Foreign Ministry also noted that the overwhelming support for the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination, including the right to their independent State of Palestine, signifies the international community’s steadfast commitment towards achieving lasting peace in the Middle East.

 1267.
 1268.
The Resolution also confers the State of Palestine additional rights and privileges that enable full participation in the sessions and work of the UN, it added.

 1269.
 1270.
Earlier, Anadolu Agency reported UNGA yesterday overwhelmingly endorsed a resolution calling for the reevaluation of Palestine's UN membership bid and granting additional rights.

 1271.
 1272.
The resolution, which was spearheaded by the United Arab Emirates (on behalf of the Arab Group), was adopted by overwhelming consensus on Friday.

 1273.
 1274.
Co-sponsored by Turkiye along with nearly 80 member states, the resolution expressed “deep regret and concern” over veto of the US at the UN Security Council on April 18, reported Anadolu. ― Bernama

 1295.
ALOR SETAR, May 11 ― The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) seized 45 sets of 'bubu naga' fish traps through operations dubbed the Op Aman in several locations in the waters of Sungai Limau, near Yan, recently.

 1296.
 1297.
Kuala Kedah Maritime Zone director Maritime Commander Noor Azreyanti Ishak said the operations were conducted based on public complaints and routine monitoring of ‘bubu naga’ fish traps which, if not curbed, could affect the country's fisheries resources.

 1298.
 1299.
“During the patrolling, members of MMEA found some suspicious-looking poles installed in the area. All ‘bubu naga’ fish traps worth almost RM6,000 were seized and taken to the jetty for further action,” she said in a statement here today.

 1300.
 1301.
She said the case was investigated under Section 11(3)(c) of the Fisheries Act 1985.

 1302.
 1303.
“MMEA will not compromise on any activity that violates maritime laws and is always committed to continuing operations and patrols to curb illegal activities in the country's waters,” she said.

 1325.
 1326.
BANGKOK, May 11 ― Invest Selangor Bhd is eyeing up to RM7 billion in potential transaction value from the Selangor International Business Summit (SIBS) this year.

 1327.
 1328.
Invest Selangor Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Hasan Azhari Idris said following the overwhelming response from last year's SIBS, the summit will be held twice this year to accommodate increasing demand.

 1329.
 1330.
“Last year we managed to achieve about RM6 billion in potential transaction value, so we are confident to be able to achieve RM1 billion more this year, with the first series set from July 25 to July 27 while the second series will be held from October 16 to 19,” he told Bernama after promoting the summit here today.

 1331.
 1332.
In terms of visitors, he said they are expecting around 60,000 visitors to attend the trade shows.

 1333.
 1334.
SIBS is an annual business event initiated by the Selangor state government and organised by Invest Selangor Bhd.

 1335.
 1336.
However, Hasan said the two events in the first series in July will focus on the investment sector, namely the Selangor Industrial Park Expo (Spark) and the Selangor Asean Business Conference (SABC).

 1337.
 1338.
He said Spark, themed ‘Selangor, Gateway to Asean,’ aims to showcase Selangor's capabilities and attractiveness as an investment destination in the South East Asian region and to provide a one-stop event to showcase potential investment locations in Malaysia as well as in South East Asia.

 1339.
 1340.
“Currently, Spark has received over 60 per cent of bookings and the response is very positive. It could be due to Spark (being able to) offer different and possible investment locations in a single event.

 1341.
 1342.
“Investors and business delegations can evaluate and compare to find any suitable locations as well as suitable partners for their investment projects,” he said.

 1343.
 1344.
He added that Spark will feature over 150 companies, not only from Malaysia but also from Asean countries and the participants will be from a diverse range of business sectors.

 1345.
 1346.
Meanwhile, Hasan said Selangor is pushing for an Asean agenda in SABC as it aligns with its strategic objectives of economic growth, regional collaboration, policy advocacy and brand enhancement within the Asean context.

 1347.
 1348.
“In addition, it is with great advantage that Selangor see Asean as a comprehensive industries supply-chain ecosystem, where we must admit, some countries may have competitive advantages to develop parts of the supply chain of certain industries, whereas we focus on the other parts of that supply-chain of certain industries

 1349.
 1350.
“Therefore, the close cooperation is vital to ensure Asean as a whole can attract the investment projects into the region collectively,” he said.

 1351.
 1352.
He said the SABC will provide an intellectual discourse platform for investors and business communities to understand more about each country's value proposition, before visiting the country's pavilions in Spark 2024.

 1353.
 1354.
“The combination of these events will provide appropriate topics of discussion and networking opportunities between potential investors, the business leaders of Asean as well as the government officials attending SABC and Spark,” he added.

 1355.
 1356.
SIBS, introduced in 2015, has attracted the participation of various government agencies, as well as industry players and trade visitors from foreign countries, including China, Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, Uganda, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Korea, Turkey, Kenya, and Australia. ― Bernama

 1383.
Abdul Rahim, came to the polling station using a cane, and Noraini, cast their ballot papers at the same polling station.

 1384.
 1385.
Meanwhile, another voter, Rodznah Bakar, 61, did not want to miss the opportunity to fulfil her responsibilities and came with her husband to the polling centre as early as 7am despite suffering from pain in her legs and having to use a wheelchair.

 1386.
 1387.
Rodznah cast her vote at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Kubu Baru.

 1388.
 1389.
“My husband and I went out as early as 7 this morning even though the location of the polling station is close to the house in Taman Pesara. We booked a rental car last night to take us to the polling station since my husband and I can’t drive ourselves.

 1390.
 1391.
“I would like to thank the Election Commission (EC) staff who helped make it easier for us to vote today,” she said.

 1392.
 1393.
Meanwhile, according to the EC, the turnout for the by-election was 18.05 per cent as of 10 this morning and the voting process took place in good weather conditions.

 1394.
 1395.
Today's by-election sees a four-cornered clash between Pang Sock Tao (Pakatan Harapan), Khairul Azhari Saut (Periktaan Nasional), Hafizah Zainuddin (Parti Rakyat Malaysia) and Nyau Ke Xin (Independent), and it is being held following the death of the incumbent Lee Kee Hiong, 58, on March 21 due to cancer.

 1441.
KUALA SELANGOR, May 11 — Pakatan Harapan candidate Pang Sock Tao has asked Kuala Kubu Baru (KKB) residents to fulfil their constitutional duty to vote in the by-election here today.

 1442.
 1443.
She also urged them to come out early to vote for the state legislative assembly seat due to unpredictable weather conditions lately.

 1444.
 1445.
“I hope all Kuala Kubu Baru voters can come out and fulfil their responsibility as a citizen,” she told reporters outside of SJKC Khing Ming, here.

 1446.
 1447.
She also reminded voters to be at their polling stations before 6pm, but reminded those voting at SJKC Bukit Fraser that it will close at 2pm because it has only 40 voters.

 1448.
 1449.
Voters at SJKC Ching Ming spent an average of 15 minutes in and out of the voting centre, as queues were typically the length of a classroom.

 1450.
 1451.
The Kuala Kubu Baru seat fell vacant following the death of its three-term assemblyman, Lee Kee Hiong, on March 21 from cancer.

 1452.
 1453.
Today, PH's Pang will be contending with Perikatan Nasional's Khairul Azhari Saut, Hafizah Zainuddin from Parti Rakyat Malaysia and Independent candidate Nyau Ke Xin.

 1454.
 1455.
In the state election in August last year, Lee beat candidates from PN, Parti Rakyat Malaysia and the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) by a majority of 4,119 votes.

 1456.
 1457.
Earlier today, Malay Mail reported that analysts predict a victory for Pang, but with a lower majority than Lee had obtained.

 1472.

 1473.
 1474.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 ― She has dedicated a substantial portion of her career as an educator to teaching Bahasa Melayu in Japan and raising the profile of Malaysia’s national language in the Land of the Rising Sun.

 1475.
 1476.
Faridah Mohamed is 65 now but retirement is the last thing on her mind. She is currently a special visiting lecturer at the Centre for Language and Culture Studies at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies. Just recently, the university renewed her contract for another four years.

 1477.
 1478.
The former teacher of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Sanzac Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, considers Japan a home away from home, having first set foot in Tokyo in 1989.

 1479.
 1480.
In a telephone interview with Bernama, she said she was among the first batch of government schoolteachers selected under the Look East Policy to attend a one-year course in Japanese language studies.

 1481.
 1482.
“After completing this course, I accepted an offer to do a four-year degree course in Japanese language and culture studies at Mei Kai University (in Chiba, about 50 kilometres from Tokyo),” she said.

 1483.
 1484.
Needless to say, Faridah, who hails from Batu Pahat, Johor, became fluent in Japanese and can also read and write in the language.

 1485.
 1486.
“During my early days (in Japan), I received numerous offers for part-time jobs teaching Bahasa Melayu in schools and universities, translating (from Japanese to Malay and vice-versa), proofreading and doing voiceovers for schools and private companies,” she said.

 1487.
 1488.
She also got offers to translate radio and drama scripts, and documentaries and has even compiled a few Japanese-Malay, Malay-Japanese dictionaries and written basic and intermediate-level Japanese-Malay communication books.

 1489.
 1490.
“I did not turn down any offer because I enjoyed teaching the locals our national language, focusing on the use of proper grammar. The pay was good too... I didn’t have much competition because at that time there were no Malays here taking advantage of all those opportunities,” she told Bernama.

 1491.
 1492.
On why she decided to stay back in Japan after completing the one-year course in 1989, Faridah said it was driven by her enthusiasm to elevate Bahasa Melayu’s prominence on the world stage.

 1493.
 1494.
The mother-of-two said it was a tough decision to make but she saw the vast job opportunities in Japan as a Bahasa Melayu teacher.

 1495.
 1496.
Since she was a government teacher then, she had to pay a penalty as compensation to the Malaysian government for choosing to remain in Japan. Fortunately, she could settle the payment with the money she earned from her part-time work as a teacher and translator.

 1497.
 1498.
“I have teaching skills and expertise in both Bahasa Melayu and the Japanese language. My name is well-known and often referenced,” said Faridah, who also has a Master’s degree in Comparative Cultural Studies from the International Christian University in Tokyo.

 1499.
 1500.
Faridah hoped the Malaysian government or local universities would send experienced educators of high calibre to Japan to further promote the Malay language in that nation.

 1501.
 1502.
“The Japanese people’s acceptance of Malay is growing and gaining more ground compared to 20 or 30 years ago. While people of other races can also teach Bahasa Melayu, their grammar and vocabulary skills may not be precise, and they often mix Malay with foreign languages,” she said.

 1503.
 1504.
She added that she is worried universities or schools in Japan may be forced to discontinue their Bahasa Melayu courses due to a shortage of teachers.

 1505.
 1506.
Asked when she plans to return to her homeland for good, Faridah said she will remain in Japan as long as her expertise and skills are needed or until a suitable replacement can be found to continue the work she is currently doing. ― Bernama

 1583.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 11 — Political analysts have predicted that the Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate, Pang Sock Tao, will win the Kuala Kubu Baru by-election today.

 1584.
 1585.
However, several told Malay Mail that the victory is expected to have a lower margin than what the late Lee Kee Hiong amassed during last year’s state election due to a lower voter turnout in the constituency.

 1586.
 1587.
Syaza Shukri, assistant professor of political science at International Islamic University Malaysia, said he anticipates that the voter turnout will be so-so as the sense of excitement is simply not there.

 1588.
 1589.
“Perhaps 50 to 60 per cent just because I don’t get a sense of excitement that usually brings people out to vote.

 1590.
 1591.
“My suspicion is that PH will win, even with an average turnout, because I think PH supporters may have more to lose so they will likely be more motivated to go out and vote.

 1592.
 1593.
“Perikatan Nasional (PN) voters are split between PAS and Bersatu voters and my suspicion is that PAS supporters may not be too eager to vote, but I’m not sure given that Takiyuddin said not voting is ‘haram’,” she told Malay Mail when contacted, while referring to PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan’s recent comments.

 1610.
 1611.
Similarly, Nusantara Academy for Strategic Research (NASR) senior fellow Azmi Hassan said voters were showing signs of election fatigue.

 1612.
 1613.
“Looking at the campaigns and sentiments played, I think voters are quite tired.

 1614.
 1615.
“Not only that, but they don’t see the urgency of going out to vote because nothing will change. It’s the politicians who have a point to prove,” he said.

 1657.
 1658.
KUALA LUMPUR, May 10 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has urged Sime Darby Plantation Bhd (Sime Darby Plantation) to be a supporter and pioneer of the government’s efforts to reduce dependency on foreign labour in the plantation sector.

 1659.
 1660.
In his Facebook post tonight, Anwar said the approach and technological advancement used by the plantation company should be emulated as a model by smallholders in the future.

 1661.
 1662.
Sharing about his working visit to the Sime Darby Plantation’s operation site at Pulau Carey, Selangor, Anwar said he was shown the transformative potential of mechanisation, automation and digitalisation in the oil palm plantation sector.

 1663.
 1664.
“This includes the use of new plantation technology and machinery, like autonomous palm fruit picking robots and fertiliser application machinery developed by the company’s in-house expertise.

 1665.
 1666.
“SD Plantation is also pioneering advanced technology that is equipped with AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning to reduce the sector’s reliance on manual labour and, thus, attract more young local talents to be involved in the oil palm industry,” he said.

 1667.
 1668.
Anwar also expressed his pride after being told of the existence of technologies at the Sime Darby Plantation operations centre which is operated by local companies like eMooVit Technology Sdn Bhd, which is a high-tech company that specialises in autonomous vehicle technology and robotics.

 1669.
 1670.
“In its collaboration with Sime Darby Plantation, eMooVit has developed various technologies, including the Autonomous Mechanical Buffalo Grabber (AMBG), which is a driverless vehicle to pick oil palm,” he said.

 1671.
 1672.
The Prime Minister said another local start-up company which has partnered with Sime Darby Plantation is Braintree Technologies Sdn Bhd, which assists Sime Darby Plantation in developing an autonomous fertiliser sprayer to ensure the fertilisation process is done efficiently and accurately.

 1673.
 1674.
In addition, he also hopes that government-linked companies (GLCs) and government-linked investment companies (GLICs) in the plantation sector will mobilise energy and funds and share ideas with start-up companies to ensure they expand to the international stage and achieve their maximum potential, as envisioned through the Madani Economy framework. — Bernama

 1719.

 1724.
“This is one of the several agreed-upon points by the federal government that Sarawak has presented,” Dr Annuar told The Borneo Post.

 1728.
He added that this was the right step towards encouraging more students to be interested in STEM subjects.

 1729.
 1730.
Also, he said the state government has presented 15 very comprehensive points to the federal government as part of Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) negotiations for the devolution of power in education.

 1732.
This was within the framework of the ambit of Paragraph 17 of the Inter-Governmental Committee (IGC) Report 1962, he said.

 1832.
 1833.
SINGAPORE, May 10 — Outgoing Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the republic’s relations with neighbouring Malaysia have been “generally good” during his time, but there are still some issues for his successor to address and work on.

 1834.
 1835.
Lee in an interview with local media ahead of the leadership transition on May 15, said during his 20 years as Prime Minister, he made progress on several issues with different counterparts from Malaysia, including the Pedra Branca (Pulau Batu Puteh) and the Malayan Railway land.

 1836.
 1837.
“For example, with (Tun) Abdullah Badawi, he was PM when the Pedra Branca judgment at the ICJ (International Court of Justice) was published.

 1838.
 1839.
“And we discussed it, I talked to him, and we decided, we would both accept this and now we should move on and talk about the next stage,” he said in the interview which was aired today.

 1840.
 1841.
The transcript of the interview was shared on the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) website.

 1842.
 1843.
Lee, who became Singapore’s third Prime Minister in 2004, has worked with a long list of Malaysian Prime Ministers, starting with Abdullah, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob and Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

 1844.
 1845.
The Singapore head of government mentioned that with his current counterpart, Anwar, the two sides have been discussing significant cooperation, including the Rapid Transit System Link (RTS Link) that will connect Johor with Singapore.

 1846.
