49.

The cultural sector falls short on other measures of diversity too, with 9o% of workers white, says new report

Six in 10 of all arts and culture workers in the UK now come from middle-class backgrounds, compared with just over 42% of the wider workforce, according to new research.

And while 23% of the UK workforce is from a working-class background, working-class people are underrepresented in every area of arts and culture. They make up 8.4% of those working in film, TV, radio and photography, while in museums, archives and libraries, the proportion is only 5.2%.

 73.

‘Strikingly large’ sum being recouped from people who fell foul of system that did not flag overpayments

Ministers are clawing back more than £250m from unpaid carers over benefit infringements that occurred largely as a result of government failures, it can be revealed.

More than 134,000 people who care for loved ones are being forced to repay often huge carer’s allowance overpayments. The debts are incurred in many cases through no fault of their own, and leave carers saddled with enormous debts, and some with criminal convictions.

 114.

 115.

It’s right to celebrate a groundbreaking medical trial. But what many of us really want is more support for people with hearing loss

As someone who has been hard of hearing since I was a teenager, I read with great interest about the case of Opal Sandy – the 18-month-old British toddler who has recently had her hearing “restored” in a pioneering medical trial.

Opal was born with auditory neuropathy, which is caused by the disruption of nerve impulses travelling from the inner ear to the brain, and which left her completely deaf. But after taking part in what is being heralded as a “groundbreaking” gene therapy trial at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge, she can now hear almost perfectly.

Oliver-James Campbell is a journalist and social media manager
Continue reading...

The Elon Musk-owned company did not explain why

Neuralink’s first attempt at implanting its chip in a human being’s skull hit an unexpected setback after the device began to detach from the patient’s brain, the company revealed on Wednesday.

The patient, Noland Arbaugh, underwent surgery in February to attach a Neuralink chip to his brain, but the device’s functionality began to decrease within the month after his implant. Some of the device’s threads, which connect the miniature computer to the brain, had begun to retract. Neuralink did not disclose why the device partly retracted from Arbaugh’s brain, but stated in a blogpost that its engineers had refined the implant and restored functionality.

Stability will be change, she argues.

I know – warm words are not enough. I do not underestimate the challenges we face. But I am so ambitious for our country. I know the huge potential found all across Britain and the constraints that are holding that potential back are not immutable forces.

They require vision, courage, and responsible government. Vision – to pursue a different approach, drawing on new economic thinking shaping governments in Europe, America and around the world – but which this Conservative government resists.

 335.
The Guardian view on disability benefit reform: the latest proposals are dangerously out of touch | Editorial

 336.

 337.

Threatening to withdraw personal independence payments will only ramp up stress on unwell people

The best thing that can be said about the latest proposals from ministers to reform disability benefits is that they are unlikely ever to come to fruition. A consultation closes in late July, so the work and pensions secretary, Mel Stride, can be expected to announce changes in the autumn. Given the imminence of a general election, however, any new policies on benefits should be viewed as fodder for a manifesto rather than a programme for the current government. They will be driven by desperation to limit what are expected to be heavy losses.

This is completely the wrong way to approach the technically and politically difficult issue of benefit reform. Millions of disabled people rely on their personal independence payment (Pip) – or disability living allowance, as some equivalent payments are still known. Like carer’s allowance, this is not means-tested, and is meant to help people cope with the additional cost of being ill or disabled. This can include paying for assistive devices, higher transport costs including commuting to work, heating bills or medical items not provided by the NHS.

 357.
The Incredibly Talented Lucy review – a sparkling story, with an enraging twist ending

 358.

 359.

This moving documentary is as much about The Piano winner’s teacher, Daniel, as it is about her remarkable rise. While their relationship is wonderful to watch, the difficulties they face prove a rotten problem in society

The makers of Channel 4’s reality/talent show The Piano probably thought they had a hit on their hands when they coined the format, but the moment they knew they had cracked it must have been when they found Lucy, a 13-year-old girl from Halifax, West Yorkshire. Blind, neurodivergent and given to throwing her head from side to side during performances in the manner of Stevie Wonder, Lucy was exactly what The Piano – which invited amateurs from around the country to play railway concourse pianos, then arranged for the best ones to do a gig at the Royal Festival Hall – was looking for.

Inevitably, Lucy now stars in a spin-off documentary where we learn more about her and see what happened next. We duly watch Lucy at home and at school, delight in hearing her play a lot more piano – Debussy, Duke Ellington, Bach – and are introduced to her wonderful, loving mother and the teachers and classroom assistants who encourage her every day in matters besides music. But The Incredibly Talented Lucy is not primarily a film about Lucy. It’s about Daniel.

 432.
Here are six ways to make education more inclusive | Catherine Smith

 433.

 434.

This is not an easy fix, but our schools should be safe places where students grow and learn together

Australia has a global reputation for high quality education. But inclusion for children and young people with disability in all that education can offer is something we aren’t getting right.

This is not an easy fix – not all schools are resourced or welcoming to students with disability. Families of students with disability often find themselves exhausted by how much they must advocate to have their child understood and have their needs met. This can lead to feeling as if mainstream schools are too hard (and sometimes too scary) and is part of the reason why, despite knowing that inclusive education benefits all children, with or without disability, we are still building new special schools.

 454.

My son spent his high school years isolated in the library or watching YouTube videos. Am I angry? Absolutely. Do I blame his teachers? I don’t

Analysis: Why the Guardian is investigating the deep failings in Australia’s school system

If you are a parent of a school-aged child with a disability, you already know that the system is broken. You likely feel helpless, judged, and as though you are failing your child. I want to assure you that you’re not, but the education system is failing them.

My 17-year-old son Alex* spends his days at home. He wants to get a job, but is going to need a lot of help to do that, and while we wait for months on end for a review of his NDIS funding, he can do little more than wait. He should be at school, but by the end of year 10 it was clear that school was doing more damage than good.
