Back when I first started writing here, there weren't that many distractions and I had a focus, a sole mission of attracting the favorable attention of this one special lady who is now MY special lady no thanks in part to my long diatribes here, but I digress.

So anyway, now with Twitter, Facebook, my iPhone and oh yes, work taking up most of my free time and energy, I find it more and more of a concentrated effort to put my thoughts into long, coherent words -- here. But fear not, I am in no way closing shop, just merely saying postings will be far and few in between but posted nevertheless. Usually, I have very little worries being an early adopter to new OS releases considering the successful upgrade experiences I've had through the years of being a Mac user.

Not so today.

After upgrading to Snow Leopard from 10.5.8, my MacBook Pro 17" would consistently drop it's internet (DHCP) connection whether it was via Ethernet (wired) or through the AirPort (wireless). I've done several supposed fixes suggested everywhere on the web with limited success:

Reset Network settings, deleted "Automatic" settings and created a new setting (called untitled)

Zap the PRAM (hold Command+Option+P+R on restart)

Flush the DNS cache (using: dscacheutil -flushcache on the Terminal)

These 'fixes' worked only for a few minutes, and the internet connection would eventually drop again. NOTE: Although other computers and drives were visible on my network, and Instant Messaging via Adium is still functional, which is weird, I could not connect to the internet through a browser, or connect Mail.app or even to the iTunes store.

Tired and frustrated at this point, I decided to finally call Apple Support (Case #134733179) and was suggested to try the following steps:
Shutdown the MacBook Pro, remove battery, disconnect the power, and then hold the Power Key for 15 seconds. After which I was told to replace the battery, reconnect power and zap PRAM and wait for 2 chimes before letting the keys go.
I was able to get connection for a while but lost it again after a few minutes of usability.

And so I called again and was told this time to try:
Trash the SystemConfiguration folder (/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration) and all of it's contents... then reboot.
The above suggestion seemed logical as it would obliterate any existing preferences that may be corrupted and affecting the connection setup. The system would then recreate a fresh preference file free of any lingering old settings. This again worked for a while, but sadly, my wired and wireless connection both drops within a few minutes of usage. It is also worth noting that simply restarting the MacBook Pro regains connectivity as well but drops after a few minutes on both Ethernet and Airport settings.

So today has been an unproductive day considering I spent all my efforts troubleshooting Snow Leopard (10.6) on the MacBook Pro, and couple that with the inability to use several key functionality such as SynergyKM to sync all three machines I have with one keyboard/mouse (not to mention the unpredictable behavior Adobe CS3 has been displaying and the loss of Letterbox's features on Mail) and I am now forced to downgrade back to 10.5.8 via Time Machine Restore until Apple resolves or acknowledges this problem.

In the meantime, I need to get work done and something as fundamental as a stable internet connection should have been high on Apple's "must work" priority list.

Sigh... would have been nice if it worked without glitches...

UPDATE: I'm back on the Snow Leopard wagon and with great aplomb! Thanks to those insightful folks at the InsanelyMac OSx86 forums, they suggested that I try a complete wipe and new install of Snow Leopard and THEN migrate my settings from Time Machine onto the fresh copy. That surely did the trick and now my MBP runs faster and better. My only wish now is that all the apps I'm using migrate over to 64-bit compatibility so that I can reboot my Mac into 64-bit mode

Smashing Times

> Krem: Knightley > Portman
> Krem: but still hawt
> lpotr4: knightley is a stick tho
> teleolurian: /cake/ > your actresses
> derek: Baccarin > Knightley, imho
> lpotr4: pretty, but curveless stick lol
> Krem: luis: portman isn't?
> teleolurian: you're getting steeev's attention
> lpotr4: well she is shapelier compared to
> Krem: krem vs luis on Knightley vs Portman is reminding me of d vs minip on Fox vs Berry...
> lpotr4: Fox vs Berry?
> teleolurian: your fight is making me read /b/
> steeev: portman is a kick ass stick
> Krem: lol, I can insult luis... After a quick glance of the blog (via Firefox) to make sure it was up and running, I quickly fired off a reply, confident that the site was indeed up and running and that was that. Then came a second notification from another cousin, this time more specifically stating that the blog was inaccessible -- via Internet Explorer 7. I launched VMWare to check the site on IE via the installed Windows XP system and saw the site was still accessible, but I was viewing it on IE 8, rolling back to IE 7 and bam, there it was, an error message saying the site could not be found. The same results were yielded by rolling back even further to IE 6. "Crap!" I thought to myself, as I scratched my head wondering what could be causing the problem and why only IE? Could it be a poorly written HTTP Access file? Nope. A PHP include gone awry? Nope. JavaScript? A-ha! Now we're onto something. After completely turning off all the JavaScript code on the page, the site was accessible again on all versions of IE, a double check on Firefox just to confirm it wasn't producing anymore unwanted side effects and then it was off to the tedious task of turning back on each script line by line until the error came back. The error definitely came back as soon as I turned on Lightbox v.2 (Lokesh Dhakar's link at http://lokeshdhakar.com/projects/lightbox2/ seems to be unavailable as well) with the Scriptaculous effect. So now what? I am leaving the aforementioned effect on that page off for now until I have time to figure out which parts of the script was specifically causing the errors, the images that gets affected still work when clicked on although now sans the nice popup effect that Lightbox provides. What is baffling to me is that the same scripts work on other parts of the site, although admittedly, the weblog page is saddled with more scripts than necessary, a cleanup and a complete redesign is inevitable one of these days, but for now, lights off for Lightbox.

PS. When I found Tom Bihn via a comment from one of the Mac forums I frequent, I felt that my search for the perfect laptop bag was fully addressed by this company. I won't be going into details about how great the products are or how awesome their customer service is whenever you call or email for whatever reason, no I won't go into that, instead, what I'll recommend is that you visit their website and explore the forums and blogs and you'll get a sense of why this company has such a strong cult following much like Apple and it's fanboy-like devotees. But I digress, I wanted to post this blog as a reminder for myself that Tom Bihn has recently put several new products out on the market today, items that are sure to put a lot of Tom Bihn fans (including myself) into a world of hurt and dilemma. The three new products that I know I want myself are as follows:

The Tri-Star: Check!

The Side Effect: Roger that!

3D Clear Organizer Cube: Make mine in triplicates...

Of course there's more on their online catalog that I want such as the various pouch organizers and travel cubes, but those three mentioned above are on the immediate hit list. Damn you Tom! And stop smiling Darcy, you too!

How To Kill A Graphic Designer

I glimpse into our world, and this ain't no April Fool's joke, so read on...
I'm sorry but could you also change on the site plan I sent you just now the color of the vacancy boxes to Bright Pink and have black bold lettering instead. Also put bold black lines around each box of each logo. If I need to do it and send you another copy let me know.

The picture looks good, very bright and clean. However, I do want the 'photo' and address to stand out more--the lettering is just too light. If you can make it bolder that would be better. The same for the spaces available for lease section, I don't think it needs to be as big as it is, maybe make it just a bit smaller but the white lettering definitely needs to stand out more. If there is no way to make the white bolder, maybe make the background coloring a little lighter. Also if you could change it to read Lease Space Available instead.

Next, completely cut out the floor plans and the come join these tenants because the new attachment has the site plan with it reading "come join our tenants" and the floor plans are now underneath the site plan with a line showing the vacancies from the site plan which makes them pop. Now if we are going over two pages when printed with the floor plans, either make the floor plans smaller to fit or possibly move the contact information underneath the Lease Space Available section.

I think that should do it and it will look good.
This was taken verbatim from the client's job notes, I kid you not. And as comical as it sounds, these are the kind of things that can literally bring a designer to the brink of a meltdown. Also, this eerily reminds me of something I came across awhile back: 10 things a web designer would never tell you.

Catching Up

Everyday life has been so busy as of late that I have completely neglected my blog (but not entirely). Twitter was partly to blame for this since it was so much easier to write one-liners as opposed to longer diatribes such as this. But hey, sometimes that 140-character limit warrants a longer blog post so here it is...

Aside from stating the obvious that I was too busy to get my head on straight and write something coherent, what actually kept me busy was a mixture of a number of things. There's work of course, and by that I mean my day job as a web monkey. There's also work outside of work, several side projects have come my way as of late ranging from web designs, to tackling WordPress themes and the occasional sprinkling of logo and print jobs. And mix in what's left of my personal time with the wife and there's little left for anything else. And oh, we had guests upon guests coming and going which made our lives a lot more busier than it usually is but all in good fun. Despite what people might think, we actually enjoy having people around and taking them around, it makes us feel special that friends and family always consider us as a destination point whenever they visit Vegas. Awww... we love you folks!

Okay. What else? Ah yes Twitter. It's like a new found drug that I can't stop using at the moment. I am sure the novelty will wear off soon (just as it always has with every new toy I've had) and my 'tweeting' will lessen to a minimum as opposed to my current knee-jerk reaction of twittering everything under the sun including my thoughts while pooping in the john. Sorry, sorry, TMI, I know. Anyways, apart from Twitter, having an iPhone with an app (Yay Tweetie!) that allows instant access to Twitter 24-7 is just too easy.

Then there's that blimey AppStore. I don't know what it is, but I seem to be downloading more apps than music or movie content these days for my phone. It started with a simple enough game like Labyrinth and now has grown into a hefty-sized app library ranging from games all the way to Kindle books and tip calculators. So far my faves are Metal Gear Solid Touch, Scrabble (yes you read that right, Scrabble!), Cooking Mama (woo!), Wheel of Fortune, ExZeus, iPhone Kindle (the app for the iPhone and not the device) and of course the most heavily abused thingamabob — Tweetie. I won't bother posting links to the other apps from the iTunes AppStore I mentioned here (I'm lazy), either just Google it or search for it on iTunes by name.

So there we have it, my self-obligartory blog post fulfilled. And yeah, still busy as heck so if you want to hear more from me (and I am crossing my fingers that some of you still do), follow me on Twitter, it's lesser reading than this. I promise.

Game Boys

No Reservations - Philippines

I received a late call from my wife today to explicitly tell me to catch Anthony Bourdain's 'No Reservations' special on the Philippines. And as much as I'd hate to admit it, the root of it all has something to do with the days moving ever so fast towards the 6th of February. What happens on the 6th? Christine goes off to the East Coast (Connecticut/NYC) and then onto Brazil to attend her cousin's highly anticipated Emperatriz performance at the Annual Carnaval in São Paolo. After the Brazilian festivities, she then returns to Stamford to accompany her niece until March 2nd. I could have packed and gone with her for the trip, but since I no longer have any time off from work left, I'll probably end up jobless when I get back should I choose to take a leave. Therefore, stay in Vegas I will. So why was I getting all sad and lonely again? That's three whole weeks without my wife, the longest we've been apart since getting married. Just the very thought of having to go through a day without her gets me all depressed, imagine what three-weeks will do. You'd probably find me bumping into things like a chicken with it's head cut off: I wouldn't know what to eat, wouldn't know what to wear, and would most likely start wondering where all these bills are coming from and why no one is writing cheques to make them go away. I'd live life aimlessly wandering the streets of Las Vegas while continuously muttering incoherently only to be interrupted by sobs and sudden bursts of wailing. Anyway, drama aside, these coming weeks will suck. Dear wife: please ignore this post and enjoy the trip, and don't forget to score me a pair of Havaianas. In size 11.5 —love, your husband.

Dawambo

During my childhood days, for entertainment, kids would play hide and seek, climb trees, race tadpoles and do silly stuff like blow up the neighborhood cow ranch. But that was because we didn't have all the cool toys that kids have nowadays. And there was no internet. So what do you get when we round up them cool toys + internet along with a bunch of bright and articulate kids? You get "dawambo"—"a blog for children by children". My two nephews and godchild (the token muse) has put up a new weblog of their own, which quite frankly puts some of the review sites out there to shame. Keep up the good work guys and strike it rich, ninong needs a flat screen TV. Heh.

PS. Here's dawambo's logo design pending the kids' approval.

Five-O

This weekend, me and wifey quietly celebrated our 5-year (Civil) Wedding Anniversary. And before anyone asks why civil, yes, we're one of those couples who also had a church wedding a few months after. We just love each other like that. He-he. Anyway, we decided not to involve too much fanfare and just had lunch at home with everything lovingly prepared by my awesome cook of a wife. With the small amount of time she had, we were able to feast on honey walnut shrimp and her delectable spicy seafood spaghetti. There were other sides (and cake!) of course, but those were the highlights of the meal. And soon after we had our fill, I snuck out to the nearest GameStop to load up on a couple of new games courtesy of the gift card Christine gave me as an anniversary present. So, please excuse me for a bit while I try and figure out how this Iron Chef game works on the DS... Allez cuisine!
