41.

In general I try to write about topics that put a smile on my face and hopefully have the same effect on you as you peruse the page. Unfortunately, my most recent experience was/is nothing to warrant even the slightest grin. And I’m afraid it’s going to be weeks and weeks before it will…much to my chagrin.

 42.
It all began with a few bothersome aches in my right shoulder. Slowly it began to hurt all the time. I couldn’t use that right arm to do much of anything. But when it finally got to the point where I was unable to lift my arm above my head I knew I had much to dread (but I sure didn’t know how much)!

 43.
I’d been to an orthopedic surgeon who told me in no uncertain terms that I had a torn rotator cuff and was on the road to needing surgery (that’s such an ugly word). This all went down shortly before Thanksgiving. Aware that this wasn’t an ideal time to be tied up with a broken wing I pleaded with the doc to get me through the holidays before doing his thing. Through a series of injections I was able to put off going under the knife but not without an abundance of strife.

 44.
So the first of February I took a deep breath and gave the doc the go-ahead. During the operation they do something to the surgical site known as a nerve block. This is supposed to last two days or so and totally numb the shoulder and arm. It worked for me for half a day during which time my hand went astray. The only way I could keep track of it was because it was gray and swollen more than a bit. I sure couldn’t feel it or my elbow or shoulder or part of my neck. What the heck?!!!

 45.
What was I thinking when I signed up for this trip? Certainly not about what the medical industry calls “discomfort.” Or another word they use instead of pain is “sore.” I definitely hadn’t considered the limitations on movement I’d have to bear. Call me clueless because I was/am so unaware of all the things I use my right hand for. I’ve compiled a partial list of stuff I can’t conquer. And after 8 looong weeks of this it’s driving me bonkers!

 46.
Every day there’s a new thing out there just waiting to hinder my life in the worse way. So just for fun, or not, you might like to try any of the following although I can’t imagine why. Remember you are wearing a sling that prevents any movement/use of your arm including your hand. And reaching for anything is totally banned.

 47.
Pull up pants, button or snap them; Pull down pants unbutton or unsnap them; Time to use the Charmin (do be careful); Put on socks and or shoes; Button a blouse or shirt; Open a door by turning or pulling the handle; Close a door by pushing or pulling on it; Open a pickle jar or any other jar with a screw on lid; Cut your meat; Scratch your back; Make the bed; Blow your nose; Put on deodorant; Write; Chase peas or corn around on your plate; Get your fork/spoon into your mouth; Type (Yipes); Brush your teeth; Floss; Use a scissor; Clap your hands (hah!); Take a shower; Wash your hair; Get dressed; Ladies, hook your bra.

 48.
This list is just a starter kit of all the things for which I wish. My sainted hubby has been a champ helping with all the things I can’t. The physical therapy we do at home is a daily event that makes me groan. It’s twice a day and looks simple on paper but put into play causes me to whimper…OMG it hurts.

 49.
So to put my pity party to rest…”
50. Oh, poor Cindy. There, there! It’s all about you.
51. You’re the only one this has ever happened to!”

 148.

Longtime Flower Mound residents Paul and Jackie Dietzler cordially invite everyone over this summer to kick back and relax in their cozy living room. The only thing is that they’re not talking about their gorgeous home. They’re opening a coffee house, and by the looks of it, Cerulean Blue Coffee House is set to be the next best thing.

 149.
Billed as “the living room of Flower Mound,” Cerulean Blue Coffee House is the Dietzlers’ way of giving back to the community they’ve loved for nearly 30 years. It will be located in the old Edison Coffee Co. space in Parker Square and promises excellent craft coffee, light food items, endless community connections, and good vibes for anyone craving a quality cup of Joe while out and about, getting some work done in a comfortable setting, hosting an event, or just lounging with friends and family on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

 150.
“We see it as a community living room,” Jackie said with a laugh. “Sure, we’ll have great coffee and food, but our vision has always been for this to be a place where the community comes to hang out. There’s nothing like this in Flower Mound. It’s just a cool vibe.”

 151.
Paul agreed, adding that Cerulean Blue’s soft opening is in late May. The grand opening is set for June 8.

 152.
“There will be calming blue colors, beautiful natural light, and ample seating for everyone,” Paul said. “We’re calling it a coffee house instead of a shop because we want it to be warm and welcoming — that’s what we hope everyone feels when they walk in the door.”

 153.
The plan right now is to be open from 6:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekends. Those times will eventually be expanded based on need, especially since Paul and Jackie’s over-arching intention is for Cerulean Blue to highlight local nonprofits and host after-hours events, community mixers, networking meetings, anniversary parties, charity functions, and more. For regular business hours, Cerulean Blue is more than a place to grab coffee. The 4,000-square-foot space features a full production kitchen and is expected to serve baked goods, breakfast and lunch items, and some grab-and-go goodies and treats.

 154.
Paul and Jackie are no strangers to entrepreneurial ventures. The dynamic couple has co-owned Expo Home Improvement for 12 years and has a nonprofit ministry called Matthew 6 Ministries. Paul also has 21 years of experience in the hospitality industry.

 155.
Truthfully, they each had this latest project in their hearts for about a decade, especially after several long beach vacations that got them thinking of new ventures. And it would have been opened sooner had the COVID-19 pandemic not derailed many of their plans.

 156.
But timing is everything, and there was also the matter of finding the perfect location. Everything has since been refurbished to create the new Cerulean Blue brand, and the plan is to be here for many years to come.

 157.
“Our space is available for the community to enjoy. We will evolve with input from our customers,” Paul said.

 158.
Jackie agreed, adding, “We have four children (Samantha, Jessica, Joshua, and Aleigha), including two that recently graduated from college. It’s becoming a family business that will hopefully bring our family and the community closer, too.”

 159.
For more information on Cerulean Blue Coffee House, please visit ceruleanblue.com.

 174.

The Denton County Transportation Authority Board of Directors voted on Thursday to end its relationship with the North Texas Mobility Corporation and begin a process to directly hire bus drivers within DCTA.

 175.
“Ridership on our fixed route bus operation has seen tremendous growth over the last 18 months, increasing 37% last year and another 26% this year following investments made by our Board of Directors to increase frequency of service,” said Paul Cristina, Chief Executive Officer at DCTA.

 176.
North Texas Mobility Corporation (NTMC) was created in 2019 when the bus operation was transitioned from a private operator formerly under contract with DCTA. The arrangement between DCTA and NTMC enabled bus operators represented by the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1338 to transition with the bus operation since DCTA, as a public agency in the State of Texas, cannot collectively bargain with the union. NTMC has 78 employees, including 53 active bus operators.

 177.
Recent resignations of key leaders within NTMC caused collective bargaining negotiations between NTMC and the ATU to be placed on hold, which prevented NTMC from raising wages and hiring new bus operators. The situation put NTMC’s ability to deliver essential bus operations services at risk, according to DCTA officials.

 178.
All employees of NTMC will be offered employment with DCTA. Bus operators who wish to continue being represented by the ATU as DCTA employees will be able to do so.

 179.
The DCTA Board of Directors is considering additional investments in its bus network to continue to grow ridership and optimize its cost of service in Denton between fixed route bus service and the GoZone on-demand micro-transit service. Recent ridership growth has made fixed route bus service more cost effective than GoZone in some parts of the service area.

 180.
“Our goal is to move as many people as cost effectively as possible. The great service provided by our bus operators has enabled this growth, and DCTA staff has made the business case that fixed route bus service can be the best tool to move people when the demand is there,” said TJ Gilmore, Chairman of the DCTA Board.

 181.
“Growth in the Connect Bus and University of North Texas Shuttle services demonstrates there is demand for bus service. This move appropriately recognizes our operators for their contribution to our success and enables us to implement the bus service plans currently in development.”

 182.
Overall, across all modes, DCTA ridership growth was up 33% in 2023 and is up another 18% so far in 2024, positioning DCTA to match its best-ever annual ridership performance.

 218.

Curt Seeden gently interlocks his fingers on the table in front of him and smiles knowingly at his wife of 24 years, Lynn. It’s obvious the longtime Orange County, Calif. natives turned proud Argyle residents are open to sharing every detail about who they are, the countless things they do to stay busy, and the crazy path that led them to Texas three years ago. But they also can’t help but hesitate.

 219.
“We came here thinking we’d just tell people we do photography,” Curt said with a laugh. “We’re behind-the-scenes type people.”

 220.
Lynn nodded, feeling like she needed to defend herself: “Well… we just didn’t want to overwhelm anyone.”

 221.
Clearly, there is more to the Seedens than meets the eye. And judging by their social activities as of late, they’re not very good at flying under the radar. As a result, it was only a matter of time before the byline became the topic. Curt and Lynn knew just one person when they moved to Argyle. Within two or three weeks, they knew more than 100 people, had found themselves a church, and were new members of a local networking group.

 222.
Fast forward to today, and Curt and Lynn’s list of close friends is a country mile long — as if they’ve been living here for 30 years. They’re heavily involved in at least three networking groups, though Lynn is already looking for a fourth, and they’re the go-to photographers for this newspaper.

 223.
But Curt and Lynn’s activities list doesn’t stop there. They sit on several boards and routinely blow people away with their uncanny ability to organize and run family and business events throughout the area. They selflessly promote local businesses every chance they get and are expanding their own company, Seeden Photography, and their new meeting space, the Seeden Club: www.seedenphotography.com.

 224.
Seeden Photography has its own studio on Hwy 377 in Argyle and specializes in corporate headshots. It also offers Santa photos, graphic design, marketing, and high-end portraits for families, individuals, and children. The Seeden Club is in the same space and is perfect for luncheons, workshops, business retreats, client meetings, networking events, and more.

 225.
“We’d never heard of Argyle, Texas before, and three weeks later, we were Argyle residents,” Lynn said.

 226.
“It is still so clear to us that God moved us specifically to this area. We intended to stay in our hometown in Orange County, Calif., but every door was closing on us. Once we said yes to this unknown town of Argyle, every door opened.”

 227.
Lynn added that the last three years have been a whirlwind as they’ve created a new home for themselves and started their businesses. “The best part about being here is all the people we’ve met and become friends with. In the weeks before our move, I joined every local Facebook group I could find and read all the local newspaper articles. I couldn’t get enough of it; we wanted to know about everything and everyone. And when we got here, we were going out to coffee and meeting people almost immediately.”

 228.
So, where does this desire to connect and inspire come from?

 229.
Curt was a newspaper editor for 40 years. His career included five years as a sports writer who covered professional teams like the Rams, Lakers and Angels. Still, he preferred community journalism because it allowed him to know and report on what was happening locally. Lynn also has a journalism background, but she made her mark as a Master Photographer, graphic design artist, public relations professional, and marketing guru.

 230.
Lynn has placed in several state and national photography competitions. She’s also earned 110 international photography awards in the portraiture genre, including family, individual, maternity, and children’s photography. In 2021, she placed No. 10 in the contemporary portraits category of The Portraits Masters competition, an international competition that received over 12,000 entries.

 231.
Together, they owned Fountain Valley Living Magazine for 15 years. Community-wise, Curt was on the Chamber of Commerce board in California for 12 years and Lynn was one of the co-presidents of the Historical Society. Lynn was a vice president of the Women’s Club, and they both served as past presidents of the Fountain Valley Kiwanis Club. Lynn and Curt created the Orange County Chocolate Festival and became known for taking on older and smaller events and sprucing them up into events the entire town wanted to be a part of.

 232.
“We took over this one event called Christmas in the Gazebo,” Lynn said. “It maybe brought in 30 people each year. After we took it over, that number went to 600. We didn’t want to move from Fountain Valley. We loved it there. Everyone in town knew where we lived. The outside of our house was set up for 50 people at all times, with patios around it. We raised our family there and launched businesses there. People would honk when they drove by. It was a fun place.”

 233.
Sadly, the COVID-19 pandemic changed that, quickly ravaging their business and forcing Curt and Lynn to downsize.

 234.
“I didn’t want to give up that house. Neither of us did. But we were struggling immensely and didn’t know how long this pandemic was going to last, so we kept hunting and even expanded our search nationwide,” Curt said. “But there was nothing for a long time. Thankfully, a friend of ours had a rental available in Argyle. We’d never heard of it; we didn’t even know what the house looked like or how much it cost. But we said yes and hoped for the best.”

 235.
As the saying goes, everything worked out in the end. Curt and Lynn ultimately built a new house five lots down the road from where they were renting and had the enviable pleasure of watching their new forever home be built brick by brick. They rebuilt their friend network and successfully established themselves as local business owners and connectors everyone needs to know.

 236.
“Other than that, we’re boring people,” Lynn said with a laugh.

 251.

What is it to be a volunteer? Simply stated, it is someone who freely offers their own time for the benefit of others.

 252.
Think about that for just a moment and imagine how different our lives would be without volunteers.

 253.
Who would stand in our courts beside children facing difficult situations to serve on their behalf as advocates?

 254.
Who would answer a midnight call and then respond to help after a major storm causes calamity in a community?

 255.
Who would watch the skies, looking for signs of hail, high winds, and tornadoes amid a thunderstorm so that we can be alerted in time to seek safety?

 256.
These scenarios represent a mere microcosm of how volunteers affect our daily lives in ways we simply cannot fathom.

 257.
Every day, thousands if not tens of thousands take time away from their own families and careers to do something that benefits someone else.

 258.
In Denton County, we are blessed with many individuals who choose to give willingly of their time – from spending an hour reading a book to a classroom of children or handing out food to hungry families to picking up litter along our roadways or assisting those affected during a disaster. Others deliver meals to the homebound, teach others how to grow their own gardens, or give guidance to a teen at a turning point in their lives.

 259.
The fabric of our county (and, in fact, our entire country) is woven with a tapestry of people who donate their time, talent, and skills in myriads of ways across our many nonprofit organizations, churches, schools, cities, and, yes, even with Denton County.

 260.
Individuals of all ages follow their passion to help others, providing a pillar of strength in this community we call Denton County. They touch our lives in physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual ways that guide us on this journey we know as life.

 261.
We owe each and all our heartfelt gratitude and sincere appreciation for their commitment to creating a better world in which all cannot only survive but thrive.

 262.
Consider, if you will, where and how you, too, could volunteer a few minutes, hours, or days to be of service. You might be surprised at the impact your time has, not only for others, but for yourself as well.

 263.
Volunteering together, we will always remain #DentonCountyStrong.

 279.

Billy Cline has never been afraid to reach for the seemingly unreachable. A longtime door repair and installation specialist, Cline went out on his own 16 years ago with one or two helpers and a modest goal of simply making an honest living. But like most things in life, one thing led to another, and his unique skill set proved far more valuable to residents than he thought.

 280.
That fledgling company, established initially as DFW Door Repair in 2008, now has more than 30 employees and has been rebranded to Your New Door to align with its local popularity and expanding national presence as America’s No. 1 residential door company.

 281.
“Three years ago, we only had six or seven people working here,” Cline said proudly. “We’ve doubled in size every year since, and besides being committed to always doing the right thing for our customers, that’s what we are focused on right now — growth. I always say I’ll keep going until we reach the horizon. But once you think you’re close, the horizon moves. So, we’ll keep going.

 282.
“I can see a scenario where we have 100 employees by the end of next year.”

 283.
Your New Door’s rise to prominence is mainly due to its versatility. When most people have interior or exterior door problems, they assume a replacement is the only option to maintain their home’s security, functionality, and aesthetics. Your New Door does plenty of that; in fact, Cline and his team manufacture all their residential doors in-house at a 15,000-square-foot facility in Irving. But there are just as many situations where a repair is the best solution. They fix various door issues, from common misalignments and replacing weatherstripping to fixing door jams, repairing forced entry damage, threshold replacement, door rot, and more.

 284.
With thousands of door replacements and repairs under their belt, Your New Door is your solutions expert for any door, including custom doors, pet doors, French doors, wood doors, fiberglass doors, iron and steel doors, and window-to-door conversions.

 285.
“We have a team of amazing craftsmen, and that’s all they do — make doors,” Cline said. “But it’s more than that. We pride ourselves on offering a full range of door services and the ability to provide accurate, over-the-phone quotes to reduce the number of trips we need to make to help someone. To do what we do as quickly as we do it is a huge benefit to our customers.”

 286.
Cline, who lives in Bartonville with his wife, Jennifer, has always had a heart for helping people. He grew up watching his father and grandfather build and remodel houses, and it wasn’t long before he was right there by their side. From there, he transitioned to residential door installations with Home Depot. He spent several years learning everything he could about repairs and replacements, then ventured out on his own.

 287.
“Before I started my own company, a customer told me, ‘You should go out and do your own thing.’ As we did that and got better and better at what we were doing, we realized there was a real opportunity to create something special — a family,” Cline said. Two of his three sons, Brian and Brandon, and his daughter-in-law, Grace, also work for the company. “One thing that’s always been important to me is culture. It’s important that each customer’s experience with us reflects our internal culture. Your brand isn’t a logo or a website … it’s what people say after you’ve left and they’ve experienced your services. I want them to know we care — we want to serve people through our knowledge of doors and give them the customer service they deserve.”

 288.
As for the future, Cline believes the sky is the limit for Your New Door. What started as a DFW-based service extends to all corners of the Metroplex and now has the agility to design, distribute, install, and repair residential doors nationwide. Your New Door has the best system and hires the best people, and everyone in America should experience getting one of their doors.

 312.
In her role, Rhonda will oversee Lantana’s Lifestyle Program, collaborating with Community Manager Rachael Robinson.

 313.
Besides continuing to offer the usual events, Rhonda said that she wants to expand activities for teens, tweens, singles and senior citizens.

 314.
“Just because you age doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy life and have adventures and meet new people,” said Rhonda, who added that she would like to start a coffee social time at the Community Event Center for seniors.

 315.
When it comes to older kids, she wants to get them away from screens and help them build face-to-face relationships with activities like fishing, teen dances and laser tag.

 316.
“My purpose is to get them engaged, to encourage them to come out of their shells,” said Rhonda. “Life shouldn’t just be all about cell phones, texting and Zoom calls.”

 317.
Rhonda said that the Lantana Community Event Center will host some new events in the coming months.

 318.
“I want to bring a very well-known jazz singer for a night under the stars,” said Rhonda.

 324.
The pickleball complex under construction on Rayzor Road will been named “Ferguson Courts at Lantana” in honor of FWSD #6 President Ross Ferguson, who brought the concept to the boards in 2020 and worked to secure grant commitments. The official completion date is Aug. 30.

 325.
The North Playground is currently closed for repairs due to hail damage and vandalism.

 326.
The FWSD has lowered its roofing permit fee to a $300 flat rate. The previous fee was based on the value of the roof project and could be as high as $600.

 348.

Gratitude is when you feel thankful for the good things in your life. Google “100 things to be thankful for in your life” and I’m pretty sure that you will nod, smile or chuckle as you read through the lists offered by Shutterfly. It is not a stretch to say that I have experienced every one of them except two at some time or another since moving to Robson Ranch over 10 years ago. The two being, “Teachers who don’t give homework on Thanksgiving break” and “Campfires.” Although our new fire table in our courtyard is my version of a campfire.

 349.
Some things unique to an active, 55+ community are also at the top of my list of things for which I am thankful. First is access to healthcare at all levels. Paramedics were called to our house twice in the last two weeks. One for a friend and one for my husband. Both are now doing fine. In those moments, the efficiency and care provided by the paramedics is something for which we are eternally grateful. Also, if you need a recommendation for a physician or specialist, there is always someone in the community who can provide it. The Living Well Committee offers a monthly educational speakers’ series on health topics. On May 15, the Denton Fire Department will be here conducting CPR and AED Training.

 350.
Under the category of convenience, we have access to great food when we don’t feel like cooking. Lately, at The Wildhorse Grill, our sommelier offers dining events highlighting a specific cuisine and wine pairings with each course. At least once a month, we can enjoy Robson Ranch Food Truck Night from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Wildhorse Grill parking lot. We can take it home to enjoy or hang out in the parking lot or grab a seat on the patio. Finally, we can shop at the Robson Ranch Farmers Market every Friday from 8 to 11 a.m. Numerous producers from the local area offer the freshest meats, produce, pasta, cookies, breads, honey, and much more right in our neighborhood. Aside from easy access to food, we benefit from the services of residents who offer handyman services, gardening advice, make alterations to get the perfect fit on a new outfit or take care of your pet while you are away.

 351.
Our Road Runners Travel Club offers us a variety of trips in the DFW metro area from sporting events to theater and volunteering and a wide variety of cruises and land tours. Traveling with friends cannot get easier than this.

 352.
So many things, large and small, to be grateful for. One of the 100 things to be thankful for is “Naturally missing every crack in the pavement.” I thought it was just me who subconsciously challenges myself to do just that when I’m power walking on Ed Robson Blvd!
