During an operation, the National System of Conservation Areas (Sinac) found 58 people illegally entering the Turrialba volcano.The discovery was made on April 28th, when this group was walking “through an unauthorized area at the top of the volcano, near the edge of the active crater,” the entity reported.
“Due to the serious problem caused by the entry of people into unauthorized areas, operations are being carried out” added Sinac, which calls for avoiding these dangerous practices.
According to Franz Tattenbach, Minister of Environment and Energy, surveillance and control actions are carried out based on information from people and agencies that offer entry to prohibited areas.
“Given the growing number of pages on <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/addiction-to-social-networks-and-its-consequences/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">social networks</a> that promote and sell illegal tours, complaints received and, most importantly, the risk faced by people who enter high-exposure areas.“There are constant gas emissions, the possibility of ash eruptions and the danger of large rocks,” Tattenbach said.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-risk-to-species">Risk to species<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw></h2>
The authorities insist on the risk and danger to which people are exposed by entering restricted areas in national parks, as well as the ecological impact that this type of activities generates on ecosystems and their species.
According to Sinac, in the last operation, in addition to the people, three dogs were found that apparently had no owner and are now under the care of the National Health Service (Senasa). This situation puts at risk the ecological integrity of the protected area and violates the National Parks Law.
“Clandestine trails have been found in which vegetation is cut, contaminated with solid waste and <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/more-than-350-recollection-points-in-costa-rica-will-be-authorized-for-electrical-waste-starting-this-october/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">human waste</a>,” said Reina Sánchez, administrator of the Turrialba Volcano National Park.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
In addition, there is high soil erosion due to human traffic and sound and light pollution that scares away fauna, especially nocturnal mammal species.These conditions impact the movement, feeding and reproduction of these animals, experts explain.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Consequences
For the people who were found on the volcano, Sinac officials proceeded to issue a warning about the illegal activity, identified all those involved and issued an administrative order.
“The order warns them of non-compliance with current regulations, immediate withdrawal from the National Park and they were reminded of the obligation to abide by this notification in any protected wild area in the country,” the entity indicated.
They also reiterated to the offenders the prohibition of entering, organizing, promoting, publishing or inciting access to protected wild areas of Sinac through unauthorized zones, areas, routes or trails, outside of established hours or without paying the entry fee.
“They were also informed that said order is of permanent and immediate compliance, if this administrative order is not followed, the crime of disobedience would be incurred, stipulated in article 314 of the Penal Code, which establishes a prison sentence of 6 months to 3 years for anyone who does not comply with the order issued,” warns Sinac.
The authorities call on the population to report the pages or people that offer this type of illegal visits.”These ‘tour operators’ do not provide personal protective or security equipment, they do not include policies within the tour and in case of being intercepted – as happened – they choose to flee, leaving their ‘clients’,” commented the minister. .

A group of Costa Ricans developed a test for the intestinal microbiota of the highest quality and scientific rigor, now making it available in the country, thanks to more than two years of research in microbiomes, an investment of 100 thousand dollars, many hours of work and with full awareness of the enormous potential of this technology to improve the health of the population.
This is a laboratory test called “MiBiome”, which, through the analysis of human feces samples, allows us to know the diversity of the bacteria that live in the intestine and their abundances.
There is a large amount of scientific evidence on the association of bacteria with different pathologies and health conditions in humans.The test offers truthful and reliable results, given that it is based on the most advanced scientific knowledge, along with the use of cutting-edge tools, protocols and resources.Once the stool sample is obtained, the process takes 3 to 4 weeks to obtain the final report.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-tico-talent">Tico talent<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw></h2>
The “MiBioma” research team is headed by Gabriel Vargas, who has a degree in Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry and a master’s degree in Microbiology and Clinical Chemistry with an emphasis in Bacteriology from the University of Costa Rica. In addition, he holds an Academic Doctorate from the University of Chicago in the field of <a href="http://bacterial genetics" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bacterial genetics </a>and genomics and is a researcher at the Department of Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences at McMaster University in Canada.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Vargas is a professor at the School of Agronomy of the University of Costa Rica and an ad honorem researcher at the Research Center in Cellular and Molecular Biology of the University of Costa Rica. He has extensive research experience in the field of microbial ecology using bioinformatics and molecular tools applied to the study of microbiomes in order to understand the structure and function of various microbial communities, as well as the interactions between microorganisms and their host.He is co-founder and scientific director of the company MiBioma S.A., which markets the “MiBioma” test in the country.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-competitive-edge">The competitive edge</h2>
“Our test, being developed locally, has a more affordable price for people, compared to alternatives available abroad. In addition, by having the technical team in Costa Rica, we can provide support and assistance during the analysis to doctors and patients. Also, “MyBiome” is not limited only to the identification of pathogenic microorganisms; since it in turn provides information about those beneficial and possible pathobionts. This is crucial to determine if there is dysbiosis in the patient and comprehensively address their microbiota. Another significant advantage is that “MiBioma” reports are available in Spanish and written in language that is easy to understand for both people and health professionals,” explains Vargas.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
The mission of this test is to expand access to information about the microbiome, allowing a greater number of people to take charge of their well-being. Its objective is to ensure that a wide spectrum of specialized doctors learn about the test, support it and take advantage of its scope and benefits in their professional practice.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-future-of-medicine">The future of Medicine<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw></h2>
“In the future, medicine will benefit greatly from the study of the microbiome. More and more associations of bacteria with different conditions are being discovered. Understanding the mechanisms of action and the microbiome as a whole will make medicine and treatments more precise and effective. In the coming years we will see the development of new drugs and treatments that will consider both their effects on the microbiome and the influence of the microbiome on the effectiveness of treatments. Therefore, it is essential to investigate the Costa Rican microbiota, since we are currently not adequately represented in microbiome databases <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/why-amazonian-natural-medicine-has-become-so-popular-worldwide/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">worldwide</a>,” says Vargas.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
The expert emphasizes that practically all diseases studied so far have demonstrated some relationship with the microbiota. This complex network of microorganisms constitutes an additional organ in the human body that influences the functioning of various systems, including the digestive, liver, heart and brain. Together, certain bacteria have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties that play a crucial role in the aging process. Understanding these bacteria is essential to making wise lifestyle decisions and promoting healthy aging.
Deep knowledge of this microbial ecosystem and its impact on the body will allow us to adjust our lifestyle and diet to improve general well-being. Likewise, it is essential to regularly monitor changes in the microbiota to be able to make the necessary adaptations and age successfully, maintaining mobility and preserving cognitive abilities.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>

The president of Costa Rica, Rodrigo Chaves, highlighted this Thursday in his second work report before Congress, the advances of the economy that have led the country to be a “jaguar”, and announced his intention to promote a multi-issue referendum to approve laws that do not advance.
“Our economy is a jaguar that emerges from Central America towards the world. “This is how Bank of America, international organizations and financial markets value us,” Chaves declared in his annual report to deputies.
The president, who will end his term on May 8, 2026, stressed that the country’s economy grew around 5% last year, poverty fell from 23% to 21.8%, unemployment went from 11% to 7.8% in the last year and that in 2023 there was a primary surplus of 1.6%.
Chaves also pointed out that foreign direct investment in 2023 reached 3,921 million dollars, which established Costa Rica as “world champion in investment attraction as a proportion of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).”
“We already play in the premier league of the 38 best-managed and most prosperous countries in the world and we look in the mirror that we deserve to see ourselves,” he said, referring to the fact that Costa Rica is part of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
The president also highlighted that Costa Rica is a strategic partner of the United States through the CHIPS and Science law, which will position his country as “one of the leaders in the world in the <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/us-secretary-of-commerce-investing-in-costa-rica-is-good-for-the-united-states/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">semiconductor industry.</a>“<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
In terms of security, Chaves regretted the “war between criminal gangs” that last year caused 907 homicides, the highest number in the country’s history, and assured that it is necessary for Congress to approve a package of laws related to the fight againstorginazed crime.
The image of the jaguar that resurfaces and fills us with hope is important, but there are still perverse shadows that deserve concrete and urgent actions. There is a violent war between criminal gangs. “That is one of the biggest challenges facing the country,” he stated.The president also highlighted initiatives in education, employment, electricity and water, in addition to a series of infrastructure projects.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-multi-issue-referendum">A multi-issue referendum<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw></h2>
Chaves complained about initiatives that, in his opinion, have been hindered in Congress or by the Comptroller General of the Republic, to which he announced that he will promote a multi-issue referendum.
“I respect the separation of powers and the power that the deputies have to obstruct the work of the Government (…) however and precisely within the framework of our Political Constitution, I inform you of the intention of the Executive Branch to promote a referendum so that citizens can decide if they agree to approve bills that are essential for the future of the country,” declared the president.
Among these projects Chaves cited the sale of the state-owned Banco de Costa Rica and the International Bank of Costa Rica; work days of 4 days of 12 hours worked with 3 days of rest; an initiative related to electricity; another to reform ministries; and the construction of Government City that will house public institutions.
In Costa Rica there has only been one national referendum, which was held in 2007 when citizens approved the Free Trade Agreement between the United States and Central America.
A referendum can be called by citizens with the signature of 5% of the electoral roll or by a vote in Congress that requires approval by a simple majority, that is, 29 of the 57 deputies.The ruling Social Democratic Progress Party (PPSD) only has 9 deputies.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-direct-decision-of-the-people">The direct decision of the people<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw></h2>
“The Government considers that there is nothing more democratic and sublime than the direct decision of the people. The decision to promote the referendum has been made but only rivers and fools do not return,” Chaves asserted.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>

I am 44 years old, and I have been writing my whole life, especially <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/the-costa-rica-book-fair-this-year-will-be-carried-out-totally-virtual/">songs or poems</a> but I never considered becoming a writer until now.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Well, «Mi Mentor No Me Quiere» (My Mentor Doesn’t Like Me) is a story of personal improvement that arises during a very <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/the-four-times-around-the-world-of-the-grandfather-of-egyptian-vultures/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">dark time</a> in my life. It is based on the misadventures that I had to face in my beginnings as an entrepreneur and how the lack of experience led me to make serious mistakes. It shows us how difficult it is sometimes to succeed in life when you don’t have the right tools.
Tell us about your book. What motivated you to put this together?<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Where did the idea of writing the book come from and why did you choose this title?
As a curious fact, I must tell you that the title was the first thing I wrote. This title came to my head one day in 2017 because of everything I had experienced previously, and it had been spinning around in my mind for several years, and it was during the Covid 19 quarantine that I was finally able to sit down and write the book.

What would you say to people who are out there trying to achieve their dreams?<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
The first thing I would tell them is don’t give up, don’t stop believing, believe in yourself and don’t be afraid. Fear does not want you to succeed, fear does not want you to overcome, fear wants to see you defeated, fear does not want you to be happy. Don’t listen to fear, don’t listen to people who say it can’t be done, listen to your heart.
How has this first experience as a freelance writer been? Do you think it would be better to work with an established publisher?<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
This first experience has been very rewarding, I have achieved very important things in a short time and many people have shown me their support, but the process of promoting a book is complicated when you do not have the support of a publishing house. Even getting books into bookstores is a long and difficult process for a freelance writer.
What advice would you give to someone who wants to write their first book?<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
The advice I would give is to do it, to start writing. With discipline, the most important thing when writing a book or doing anything in life is discipline. Without discipline you can’t achieve anything, you must write every day, it doesn’t matter if you can only write for a few minutes, but you must write every day.

Socrates said that art not only represents the body, but also the soul, and looking at it from today’s perspective, that definition still holds and artists we have interviewed here at <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TCRN</a> have confirmed it through their points of view.
Recently, we had the pleasure to talk with the artist from Tibás, San José, Mario Roberto Phillips, who shared his story, essence, talent, and purposes.
For the artist, art today is in the process of finding new media and trends, “in some cases rediscovering classical realism and in others, fearlessly exploring the possibilities of modern art. For me, art is a visual language through which each artist creates projections of his or her inner self, this has personally been a very natural process and a positive impact by having a medium to express my ideas”.
Mario is a Tico who has always lived in Tibás, where he has fond memories, to mention one of them, learning to ride a bicycle.
If we talk about teachings, many of them come from our parents and the artist emphasized that he keeps in his life: to be polite, and cautious and to treat others well, which today he is especially grateful to his parents.
And, if we talk about pillars in our life, Mario highlighted “knowing that God is in control of everything, my family and friends”.
What inspires you about Costa Rica? He is inspired by the landscapes, the peacefulness of the countryside, its colors, and also its people.
About what or who led him to art, everything comes from childhood, a natural inclination, he told us that he was always drawing, “my grandmother took my drawings and put them on her wall, that was key”.
He has taken drawing courses at La Casa del Artista, the UCCART; he spent a short time at the Atelier del Sol and has also taken online courses at the New Masters Academy.
Phillips likes to paint in oils and acrylics, he also does <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/a-tico-transcends-borders-with-his-art/">digital painting</a>, which is a medium that is very misunderstood by many people,” he said. He is grateful for his knowledge to his artistic mentors, as well as the great painters of history, “each one contributes an important piece of the puzzle, as well as his exploration”.

It is worth mentioning that Roberto has worked teaching drawing in art schools: The School of Arts of San Pablo and the Costa Rican Chinese Cultural and Educational Center, he has also made illustrations for books, coloring comics for Costa Rican and U.S. artists, commissioned portraits and online classes in <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/isla-san-lucas-cultural-historical-and-natural-tourist-destination/">traditional and digital drawing</a>.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>

What can you tell us about making art today? What is needed beyond creativity, because now there are so many digital platforms and of course, times have changed? Regarding the question we asked the Costa Rican painter, he emphasized: that the refreshing art is the one that does not imitate others but rather the one that has already found and matured its artistic language. In his opinion, the technical aspect is important to go beyond the limits, -technique is an aid to creativity- “The platforms are something that works for some, but not for others, the artistic fashions of social networks can overshadow the originality in many cases, on the other hand, many have made them a space to show and sell their art”.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-significant-artistic-career">A significant artistic career…<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw></h2>
The works he has created can be seen in oil and acrylic, also digitally (with the use of the computer, tablet, and even his cell phone). He enjoys working his works in pencil, ink, and charcoal; besides portraits, he has focused on fantasy and abstract themes “which I like very much” he said.

So far, he has participated in an exhibition as part of the group Sección Áurea of the Continental University of Sciences and Arts. In that exhibition, she exhibited several oil paintings.
He paints murals, as well as the one he did for the “Queen’s Birthday Party” (National Day of the United Kingdom).
Today, Mario has the satisfaction of having received recognition thanks to drawing workshops in which he has participated and a virtual exhibition organized by an Italian group of artists.
Phillips is the Costa Rican artist who had the privilege of being interviewed by the team of the website PENUP, an artistic network that belongs to Samsung, which also gave him a place in the hall of fame of its platform, in recognition of his digital paintings, which caught the attention of the curators of the site. <gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
The artist mentioned that he made a portrait of several generations of a family in pencil on a surface of 1 meter by 70 centimeters, the client wanted him to portray them as if they were Mount Rushmore. Also, two rather large murals of Costa Rican animals for a Chinese restaurant in San Jose.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-multifaceted-artist">A multifaceted artist<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw></h2>
Mario Roberto Phillips is a multifaceted artist, he does not only draw, he loves taking pictures, going out with friends, exercising, and wood carving, he has an innate gift for lyrical singing and languages.

He admires <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/young-costa-rican-entrepreneurs-raise-one-million-dollars-with-their-startup/">Costa Rican entrepreneurs</a> who are not afraid to start from scratch, and he admires the great masters of painting such as Anthony Van Dyck, Leonardo Da Vinci, Rafael Sanzio, Valentin Serov, Ilya Repin, and Jean Baptiste Greuze.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-how-does-mario-envision-himself-professionally">How does Mario envision himself professionally?</h2>
In the future, Mario plans to have his own space (a studio) where he can paint and draw and also have a gallery.
He wants to hold a solo exhibition. Regarding learning, he tries to be in constant training, to enrich the art he makes.
We are pleased to make known the stories of Ticos like Mario Roberto, who beyond being talented in what he does, has dreams and we predict a wonderful future for him.

What is Neurodivergent? It is Wednesday, 8:20am in Villareal, and the energy is already vibrant in <a href="https://www.irencr.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Instituto Renacimiento </a>(iREN). In this bilingual school are welcome children with neurodivergent conditions, as well as those experiencing trauma, anxiety, or depression and who may have faced challenges in in traditional schools.
Located outside of Tamarindo, this institute was founded in 2019 by Sylvia Barreto Benites, a Paraguayan American teacher who has been living in Costa Rica for years.
“I am dyslexic, attention deficit and oppositional. School was very difficult for me as a child. Then I had my own kids, and it was even harder for them. We moved in Costa Rica thinking we would find different solutions, but we didn’t. We found the same traditional schools but with less resources. I ended up having to homeschool my own children.
At the time I was a Spanish teacher, they were so many people coming complaining that they needed services for their children and there were not any. Dealing with a child who is either very brilliant or very behind is difficult in a school with classrooms of 15 – 20 kids.
I decided at that point that I wanted to do something, I wanted to change the perspective of how we saw neurodivergents as something that’s negative and awful and in the way to something that’s positive and part of the growth of humanity”.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-celebrating-neurodivergent-kids">Celebrating Neurodivergent Kids</h2>
It is estimated that 15 to 20 % of the world’s population exhibits some form of neurodivergence. Yet in most mainstream schools, the potential of neurodivergent children remains overlooked, even though their unique perspectives, sharp creativity, and ability to focus could be of great benefit to our societies.
In Instituto Renacimiento, the education team truly recognizes the immense value of neurodivergent kids and believes they should never be viewed as burdens but as children with great potential. In fact, iREN is centered on the acceptance and use of individual specialties and strengths rather than attempts to “heal” the children in order to make them fit the norm. The purpose is to create an environment where neurodivergent students are celebrated for their abilities in order to empower them.
“iREN represents the belief that children who are different, who diverge from the norm have worth and should be invested in, that’s what I believe. Everything we do is for that, the entire system we created is for that”, explains Barreto.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-special-learning-environment">A Special Learning Environment</h2>
Instituto Renacimiento diverges from <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/costa-rican-educational-system/">traditional schools </a>by the learning environment it provides. Nestled in a 33-acre eco-park filled with lush canopies and creeks, the school offers an immersive learning experience within nature. Such a unique setting allows students to have access to unconventional activities compared to other schools such as horseback riding every week and ziplining once a year, adding an uplifting dimension to their academic journey.

Other aspects of the learning environment are very unique. With a deliberate focus on keeping class sizes small, each teacher supervises a maximum of 10 students, guaranteeing personalized attention. Moreover, these classes, filled with students from 3 to 18 years old, are not organized by age but level, allowing a customized learning trajectory for each student, accommodating their unique needs, and maximizing their academic potential.Haut du formulaire
Stephen French, teacher at iREN, explains: “I used to teach in the US. We had to do one curriculum, it was hard to differentiate between the needs and levels of each student which could be vastly different. Here at iREN, through our small class sizes, we are allowed to have a lot more flexibility. We have a great autonomy in how we teach the material. Here we are encouraged to embrace the neurodiversity of our students and try to use what a lot of people see as a detriment as an advantage”.
The concept of Instituto Renacimiento extends beyond a mere educational institution; it aims to foster a sense of community. Here, parents are actively involved in the decision-making process alongside their children. Barreto orchestrates regular meetings—approximately 6 to 7 times a year—with parents to share ideas and collectively shape the school’s future. Moreover, children are empowered to voice their opinions through initiatives like the “iREN idea box”, in which they can slip suggestions to enhance the school experience. Children are also welcome to share breakfast every morning with their teachers and parents, providing a pleasant start to the day before classes begin.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-what-is-your-superpower">“What is your superpower?”</h2>
Instituto Renacimiento has a revolutionary approach to education for Neurodivergent kids, focusing on social emotional development as much as academic development, implying a deep effort to address the behavioral issues of students.
Barreto elaborates on the topic, stating, “No child wants to be bad. Children are not bad or good; children are hurt or healthy. When a child is behaving in a way we consider annoying, disruptive, or violent, the child does not want to live that. He wants to live like everyone else, but he does not have the tools or the path to get there. What iREN does is creating these pathways with the child. The child, the psychologist, and the tutor work together on a game plan and ask themselves ‘What can we do next time?’. ‘Next time I’m going to breathe, next time I’m going to find a friend, next time I’m going to ask a teacher’. And we practice the game plan”.
At iREN, the education team approach revolves around understanding each child’s learning style and interests in order to create a hook to engage them in the learning process. “What we believe here is that every child has value. We study every single child and ask, “What is your superpower?”, “What is the thing that you do the best?” “And these things that you’re struggling with, how do we make them better?”, Barreto explains.
Another particularity of iREN is their point system. In fact, you won’t find any grade on the assignments in this school. Instead, students collect points based on their individual and team efforts each week. The child who has demonstrated the most progress, has done the most work or has done something considered extraordinary during the month will be elected student of the month. They are rewarded with a meal prepared by the education team and the school organizes a party. Such celebrations foster a positive and inclusive learning environment. When students get a wrong answer on an assignment, they do not get a definitive grade but instead are encouraged to rethink and provide alternative solutions.
Barreto highlights, “Right answers are not the main objective. The main objective is critical thinking, imaginative thinking, being able to solve problems, being able to be empathetic, being a good citizen, being conscious of the world around them… Our goals are different”.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-a-different-way-of-teaching">A Different Way of Teaching</h2>
In the classroom, between the yellow and orange walls, students voice their answers at the teacher who is walking around the ten desks, offer ideas and team up to brainstorm on some exercises. Every corner of the classroom is adorned with all kinds of objects while the walls are covered with maps and colorful signs, stimulating different senses.

The teachers here are passionate and enthusiastic and captivate the students’ attention through interactive lessons. They walk from desk to desk to talk individually to each child, making sure that every one of them is included and following the class. With this focus on individual attention, they create an environment where every student feels accepted and encouraged to express themselves freely.
Additionally, at iREN, several members of the education team are neurodivergent themselves, allowing a deeper understanding of the children’s behaviors and issues. In fact, when asked what prompted him to join this school, French answers, “I get these kids; I understand the things they struggle with. I felt like I could really help here. I feel like my delusion of the US school system really is a benefit to me here because I can see the mistakes that were made in the US, and I realize that at iREN I get to try something different, so I really enjoy the freedom that comes with it”.
A parent of an iREN student shared insights into her child’s experience with the school system in the region. Having resided in Tamarindo for seven years, they sought quality education for their child but encountered a recurring issue: bullying. Despite trying three local schools, their child struggled with inadequate support from educational professionals. Forced to make a mid-year change, they turned to iREN as a last-minute solution to address the urgent need for a safer educational environment.
After months of learning at Instituto Renacimiento, the child has made impressive progress academically, emotionally, and socially. The family noted improvements in English, writing and concentration, as well as a massive reduction in stress and anxiety levels, with the child appearing much happier.
“iREN does not tolerate bullying at all, they simply do not let it happen. iREN is not a business. They treat children with a lot of respect. They do not give up on children. I have seen children coming to adults at iREN to complain. They immediately stop everything they are doing, take the child aside, put themselves at their level and truly listen to them”, the parent expresses.
<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-future-of-iren">Future of iREN</h2>
Although iREN stands as a well-established and fully operational institution, Barreto’s primary objective now revolves around finding investors to uplift the place and enhance both the learning environment for students and the working conditions for teachers.
A key priority includes addressing the nutrition aspect, which may involve hiring a nutritionist and offering healthier meals to students. Funds may also be directed towards increasing the salaries of teachers, ensuring their financial well-being and motivation.
French adds “Ideally, I would like to see iREN find some angels who really care about the future of this country and the future of our youth to invest in and support the work that we are doing here at iREN”.

Who are we and where are we going? These are usually very common questions at some point in people’s lives and, at that moment, we should sit down for a moment to think about what we really like, what we are passionate about and what gives us fulfillment. Steve Jobs said that “the only way to do a great job is to love what you do”.
These same questions were once asked by Josué Murcia, an athlete from Los Ángeles, a town in Grecia, in the province of Alajuela. We will talk about this later, in some very interesting paragraphs about difficult moments in his career that he was able to overcome thanks to God and to the fighting and motivating spirit of the 27 year old.
For Murcia, his childhood was quite beautiful and meaningful because at the age of 4 his parents enrolled him in a soccer team. He studied elementary school in Los Angeles. Then he was in the sports high school of Grecia, he entered that school because he could practice sports half of the day and the other half to study, and at that time he was focused on athletics, at 13 years old to be exact.
However, in school he had already known and, of course, practiced sports such as indoor soccer, volleyball, handball and athletics, in fact both Josué and his classmates became national champions two years in school in handball.
Los Angeles according to Josué Murcia
The young athlete described the town where he was born and grew up, which belongs to Alajuela, “it is an almost rural area, where the kindness of the people, of the Costa Rican is characterized, in a rural area it is undoubtedly different than living in the metropolitan area, in the sense that in Los Angeles, all the neighbors know each other and if my mom cooked something she gives a little to the neighbor, we all know each other, we share and we take care of each other. You keep that desire to serve the community, to try to help each other, that’s something I like a lot. It can be different in the case of the cities where everyone is in their own things, accelerated”.
Regarding his childhood, he said he spent a lot of his free time outside the house, playing with his friends, riding his bicycle, going to the rivers, to the pools, climbing trees, so he said he had a very healthy, quiet and nice childhood, “I was always involved in some sport; I remember Sundays going to mass because our family is Catholic. Now I live in Santa Ana, because I work in Escazú and it is close enough to visit my parents”.
About Costa Rica, the country he loves deeply, he highlighted the immense nature, the beaches and the mountains, “I could not choose which one I like more, I enjoy both. I am proud to be Costa Rican, when I am abroad I represent my country with pride, when I talk about it, people perceive it”.

Thanks to the teachings of his parents, Murcia has values, principles and a way of being authentic, which are reflected, in his opinion, in the most important thing: “thank God for all the things I have, for me it is very special to be close to him, also try to be a better person every day, is what my parents and sport has taught me. To be clear about where I come from and the person I am with respect to my values. That if you set your mind to something you can achieve it and that things have to be earned, nothing is a gift. Since I was little I remember that I had to work to buy my things, we never lacked anything, but they (my parents) did it that way and I am very grateful, because when you grow up with those teachings everything becomes easier, the theme of fighting and getting ahead despite the circumstances or adversities, and we do not really see it as that, it is like what we have to do, which is part of life”.
Studies and diverse work experience<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Josué studied Human Movement Sciences at the University of Costa Rica. Last year (2023) he completed a specialization in International Training at the University of Leipzig in Germany and is now in the process of studying for a Master’s degree in Business Administration, preferably in the United States.

His work experience has been diverse: he has worked with swimming and athletics academies. Now he is the trainer and physical trainer of the Eskalada Deportiva school in Escazú, he has an athletics team called “Flowtrack”, it is an enterprise, he is also the trainer of children who run on track, in the street, who do marathons, he also trains people who only do it for health.
There is no sport he doesn’t like<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Murcia has always had an affinity for sports, “there is no sport I don’t like. My mom signed me up for a soccer team when I was 4 years old, by the time I was 10 years old I was playing five different sports and when I couldn’t play one because the weather didn’t allow it, I had a hard time because I really enjoyed practicing, training and moving around, today I am dedicated to athletics, but whenever I have some free time I like to go swimming, cycling, or do another sport because I really enjoy it,” he said.
Athletics runs through his veins<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Josué has been practicing athletics for 14 years now. When he decided for athletics, he began to take it seriously, “I have always been in the middle-distance area, when I was younger I competed with the 600 meters, also instead of the 400 meters I went with the 300; instead of 1,500 meters I went with the 1,200; today he keeps with the 800 meters.
The Tico athlete emphasized that, thanks to many people, mainly his parents, he got to know athletics, they have supported him, he never lacked anything to train.
“There comes a point when you question why you do it, and today I practice athletics because I like it, I will continue running all my life, I enjoy it very much. You always have the desire to want to be better, to improve yourself, when you set a finish line and you have trained a lot, when you think that the race you are going to run is going to be the best of your life, that is what moves me and it is one of the few things in life that makes me feel those emotions. Of course, with time one can no longer make it so intense or so competitive with respect to the distance, but I will still enjoy it to the fullest. There are many other people who have influenced my career: managers, coaches, friends and the desire to do things, since there are times when you are tired, or there are other commitments,” he added.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>

Pillars in the sport
He considers himself lucky, because when he started in the sport in Greece, he had a coach, Carlos Campos -now retired- who had a very good training with the process of technical athletics, “he taught us athletics as a game and then basically we fell in love with the sport, he is the most important pillar of my beginnings”.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
His parents are another of his pillars, since they have always been linked to the sport: his mother is 61 years old and runs street races, his father is physically active, and his siblings were running until recently.
Why did you choose half distance and not full distance?<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
In athletics there are different areas, according to the taste of an athlete. If we focus on the Tico athlete, we can say that there is half and full distance, he has always liked half distance because, in his opinion, it is very complex. Running 800 meters is a test in which you have to have a lot of resistance, but you also have to be very fast, maybe not as fast as the 400 meters, or not as resistant as the 10,000, but you are like in the middle, you have to be between the two and it is something very nice. Before I didn’t enjoy training sessions as long as 20 and 25 kilometers, now I enjoy them more, I also like to run fast. There are weeks of sprint training, I have to run 50, 100, 200 meters, 20 kilometers and so on, you can have that versatility that makes it authentic”.
The dream of going to the Olympic Games<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
The dream of every <a href="https://thecostaricanews.com/raquel-solis-on-her-success-as-a-triathlete-and-the-dream-of-paris-2024/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">athlete</a> is to go to the Olympic Games, it is the finishing touch, says Murcia, but at the same time he feels that going to the Olympics does not mean that he will feel fulfilled in life, “there are other goals that make me feel that way. However, after the pandemic I had proposed it more seriously and it is something I fight for, although it is a little far from the current reality, but I will always try to improve, to see how far I can go”.

What must a person have or maintain to be a practitioner of athletics? “First you must be aware of what you want to do, to be clear about what it implies, because I have talked to guys who train and they tell me – they want to be the best – and I ask them if they really want that or if they visualize themselves on the podium lifting the trophy, because they are two very different things, because if you really want something you also imagine yourself reaching the top, but you also have to take into account everything you have to do to achieve it. You have to be disciplined, resilient because things are not always going to go well and have endurance in the face of pain, fatigue and state of mind, in the face of all that to stay in time”.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Achievements of the athlete from Alajuela<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
He has competed in all the minor category processes such as National Youth Championships, National, Student and University Games, Olympic cycle competitions, National Senior Championships, Central American and Caribbean University Championships, World University Championships, the only championships in which he has not been a winner was the World University Championships, in the others he has surpassed the goal.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
It is worth mentioning that at the end of March he participated in the Pepsi Florida Relays 2024 800 meters, in which he did very well; on April 12 and 13 he competed in the Bryan Clay Invitational: Athletic Summit in California, in 800 and 1,500 meters and, at the end of April, he was in the National Senior Championship in Costa Rica where he won gold in the 800 meters; all of June and July will be international competitions with the National Team and other events.

Difficult moments and how he has dealt with them.
Josué talked about two difficult moments in his sports career, very significant that left him of the best learnings: The first, was in a 2017 World University Championship in Taiwan, his first experience as a world champion, at that time he had a coach and thought he had prepared well, but they had never entered to work the psychological part, which played a dirty trick on him, “I was very anxious, nervous, The coach could not travel with us, because there was no budget, so we were alone, I had a hard time focusing as it should be and in the end the results were not positive, the leaders who were around at that time were quite critical of me and I felt like in a hole, after that I had a hard time trying again”.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
In 2018 he tried to quit athletics, he left for the United States, he froze his career at the university, he spent a year without studying or training because he did not know what he wanted to do, he was having a very bad time. “In 2019 I decided to resume, again I was in National Selection processes and in an international event again I was with another negative psychological episode, so then I decided to start working with a psychologist, the pandemic passed, I managed to stabilize and performance continued to improve.”
Another difficult moment was last year (2023) in Germany, he had prepared a lot to go to study and compete in Europe; when the competitions were starting he had a displacement in the joint capsule in his left knee, in a training session at the gym, it became very inflamed and in a week he thought he would not be able to run anymore, which emotionally deteriorated, because he visualized himself not so much competing, but running all his life, which for him is his satisfaction, meditation, he feels happy and full. “No doubt I felt quite sad, because I was also qualified for some events of the Olympic cycle of the previous year and obviously I could no longer do them, but after taking tests it turned out that in 6 weeks of rest and therapy I could continue running, when I found out about that I felt that I was born again”.
It has helped the athlete to face the strongest circumstances of the sport: the fact of being a fighter, resilient, trying to see the good side of things and always go forward.
Other occupations and how he sees himself in the future…<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
Regarding his responsibilities with the Eskalar sports complex.<gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw><gwmw style="display:none;"></gwmw>
He came to work with Eskalar in 2020 when he was one year away from finishing his degree in Human Movement Sciences, they were looking for a physical trainer, and he applied after going through some interviews.
For him, everything has been a great learning experience, because first he entered with the focus on physical preparation, then he had to get more involved as a coach, I had to learn a lot more about the sport of climbing.
“I started in the company from the bottom as a physical trainer, then I developed a long-term sports structure by age, now I am the coordinator of the school and I work together with other colleagues, who are the ones who put together the routes and are the administrative area.I thank the owner Julio Arce, a mentor for the sport and professionally, thanks for the trust, we are a good team. Our purpose in the company is to be a reference at regional, national, Central American and Caribbean level for the sport, the values of the mountain, the discipline as such, we can teach people to climb, to enjoy it and do it safely, also, we have a group of high performance who want to reach important international competitions,” he reported.

Murcia also gave us details of his involvement with Hagamos Equipo, the Coopenae space.
Since 2021 he met them and was training and competing as part of Coopenae, in fact, he did quite well and returned to run fast. He contacted them again, made a contract and since he has been with them “everything has gone well, even feeling the support of a team, of a company that is committed to your growth as an athlete, as a person, professionally in this academic case, we get along very well, I am very happy, I am happy to be part of the Coopenae family and I would like to stay with them much longer,” he said.

As we mentioned earlier, Josué is also an international coach, so we asked him what is needed in addition to training, to be a coach today? From his point of view, to be a coach you have to be quite studious, understand the sport in which you are working from all areas, what is needed for a person to develop properly in the sport (in this case athletics), that people know how to run mechanically properly, the habits that are needed to be able to do it.
“Then the sessions are planned so that the athletes have the necessary adaptations and improve, but you also have to know what the principles of the laws of training are, on which you have to base them so that the training can be sustainable over time, so that the person feels good and improves. You have to understand that most clients have a working day of up to 10 hours a day, that they have families and responsibilities and you have to learn to coordinate everything so that together with what we indicate as trainers, they can do it in a healthy way and enjoy it”.
He mentioned that the psychological part is fundamental to help the trainees in their feelings and performance. “The coach must have excellent communication skills and at the same time be strict in his own values, attitudes and skills to set an example”.
Looking to the future, the athlete, a proud Tico, would like to lower his personal bests a little more, achieve the national record in 800 meters, run faster in 1,500 meters. He would like to go to more important events such as the World Championships or the Olympic Games, “although it is quite difficult to get there, because I feel that I have already experienced and enjoyed everything else”.
Josué likes to cook – he often dances while he cooks and it is a combination that he loves – he is passionate about reading biographies, articles, playing other sports recreationally and eating.
He identifies with Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan, Rafael Nadal and the Spanish coach Pep Guardiola, who in his opinion, have excelled a lot in sports and because “they are very intelligent and understand sports very deeply, from many areas they can live it intensely, I like that because I do the same”.
When he was little, and did not know how to share the good that practicing and training generated, he felt strange, perhaps as if he did not fit in, he always had the need to spend time reading, talking, investigating how he could improve “and the people around me did not see it that way, or did not share it so much, now after reading biographies of these sports personalities and relating to those who share the same passion as me, I feel comfortable and identified”.

He is the founder of Flowtrack, and now he shares the training part with his girlfriend, the two of them are developing the training platform, which he said is in its infancy, due to their other occupations.
They want Flowtrack to be a training or integral development platform for people who want to learn to run recreationally or competitively under scientific criteria. “The idea is that in the future we can have a complex in which we can develop and where we can work with many people, now what we do is to train; we have groups with whom we train in La Sabana, also in the BN Arena, we have kids who train remotely who run marathons outside the country because they live in Europe or in the United States”, he pointed out.
For Murcia, entrepreneurship has been important, he says that it is a space to get to know himself better, to improve himself, to share with other people the same passion for athletics, his achievements, mutual support, to have a sense of belonging, and to want people to enjoy it, to sustain it in the long term in a healthy way and with a professional training criteria so that they can do their best.
“The time will come to dedicate more time and love to Flowtrack, right now I am dedicating myself more to being an athlete, I am only 27 years old”.
Undoubtedly, the story of Josué Murcia is incredible and sport, or rather athletics, runs through his veins, just like the title of this material.
The athlete concluded the pleasant conversation with our TCRN team, expressing that this life is very beautiful and we must enjoy it at every moment; that sometimes we postpone many things, but we must understand that life passes very quickly and we should consider, rethink what we want to do. “In many cases it is necessary to have a plan and dream, observe where we are and where we want to get to and take into account everything we have to do to achieve it. And if you get to the top, observe all that you have lived, between laughter, tears, exchange of knowledge and always thinking that what you live today is what really matters, dreams can be fulfilled, with effort and believing in ourselves. What we do and enjoy, we should do for ourselves”.
