Early in the spring , just after the ice has left for good, you can find Pike in the weed infested shallows trying to catch a little sun. I suspect that they might spend most of their time looking toward the surface of the water for a little post- winter snack. Check your local regulations in case the body of water you want to fish is closed till later in the spring.A fly rod of substantial backbone , preferably an 8 or 9 wt. in 7 or 8 foot length is adequate. Match that with a good sturdy reel , a 20 to 30 lb. tippet. ( you can buy a coated leader type specifically for pike at your fly shop. The fly can be anything large and bushy. Color should be dependent on the water color. You want to cast your offering up close to the weeds and strip it back with short bursts and lots of splash. Pike will sometimes circle around and take the fly on the way back into the shelter of the weeds.A deer hair, mouse, or a hand tied bucktail jig is a good choice to start with. You can cruise the weed beds in almost any boat, or if you're not shy , and would like to get closer to your quarry, a float tube can make your pike fishing much more exciting. Trust me, being pulled around the lake by a 20lb pike with an attitude will get your heart beating. I believe that pike fight harder on the fly, simply because when they hit a fly and become hooked it is similar to hooking a trout by one lip, enabling the fish to still take in lots of oxygen, therefore being able to put up a good struggle.
