That’s when the Dodgers were able to pick up the walk-off win on a clutch hit by Shohei Ohtani that gave Los Angeles the victory on Sunday evening.

 74.
Hunter Greene was cruising through the first three innings of the game, giving up just one hit. But in the 4th inning he gave up a leadoff single to Freddie Freeman on a 3-0 pitch. Two batters later Andy Pages hit a 2-run homer into the seats in left field to put the home team on top 2-0.

 75.
The Reds offense got to work in the next half-inning. After a ground out began the top of the 5th, Stuart Fairchild and Santiago Espinal hit back-to-back doubles to cut the Dodgers lead in half and make it 2-1. After a strikeout of Luke Maile, Los Angeles brought in a lefty reliever to face Will Benson and on the 8th pitch of the at-bat, Benson lined out to a leaping Mookie Betts at shortstop to end the inning.

 76.
Hunter Greene kept the Dodgers off of the board in the 5th and 6th innings, sending the game to the 7th with Los Angeles still up 2-1. Cincinnati’s offense started putting pressure on when Jonathan India led off with a walk. Stuart Fairchild then laid down a bunt, but pitcher Ryan Yarbough fielded the ball and turned and threw to first base where there was no one near the bag. India raced around to third and Fairchild moved around the bases to second.

 77.
After a pop up, the Reds called on Tyler Stephenson to pinch hit for Luke Maile. The Dodgers opted to intentionally walk him to load the bases and face Will Benson. Cincinnati then sent Spencer Steer out to pinch hit for him, but then Los Angeles countered by bringing in Alex Vesia out of the bullpen. The two battled for nine pitches, but Steer came out on top as he worked a walk to bring in the tying run. That was all they’d get as a strikeout and pop up stranded the bases loaded.

 78.
With the game now tied, Hunter Greene returned to the mound with 98 pitches under his belt to begin the bottom of the 7th. Jason Heyward took the first pitch of the inning and hit it 106 MPH into right field for a single. Greene came back to strike out Enrique Hernandez, but Heyward stole second on final strike. David Bell then made a walk to the mound to call on Fernando Cruz out of the bullpen.

 79.
Cruz would strike out Austin Barnes, but then the lineup turned over and Mookie Betts came to the plate with the go-ahead run still standing out there at second base. The Reds righty got out of the jam as Betts popped up just behind the bag at second base to send the game into the 8th all tied up.

 80.
The Reds had held Shohei Ohtani down for the entire series, but he picked up an infield single as he beat Sam Moll to the bag on a bang-bang play. Freddie Freeman got ahead 3-0, but Moll battled back and got him to ground into a double play. Teoscar Hernandez then singled into center before the Reds made a pitching change. On the third pitch thrown by Emilio Pagan, Tyler Stephenson threw out Hernandez trying to steal second base to end the inning.

 81.
Cincinnati tried to get a 2-out rally going in the top of the 9th when Tyler Stephenson and Jacob Hurtubise put together back-to-back singles, but Elly De La Cruz struck out to end the inning.

 82.
After throwing just three pitches in the bottom of the 8th, Emilio Pagan returned to start the 9th inning. He would retire the first two batters he saw, but on the third pitch to Jason Heyward, Pagan seemed to feel something and the trainer headed to the mound. The two of them would leave together and the Reds called on Alexis Diaz to enter the game with Heyward still at the plate. He needed three pitches to finish up the at-bat, striking him out to end the inning and send the game to the 10th.

 83.
If you’re going to head to extra-innings then the guy you want to start at second base for you would be Elly De La Cruz. And for Cincinnati that’s what they had on the table, but a strikeout was followed up by back-to-back groundouts and the Reds couldn’t bring in the go-ahead run.

 84.
Jason Heyward started the bottom of the 10th on second for the Dodgers and Alexis Diaz was back to the mound for the Reds. An attempted sacrifice bunt was popped up and caught by Tyler Stephenson to begin the inning. Will Smith then came off of the bench to pinch hit and drew a 5-pitch walk. Diaz went to a full count with Mookie Betts before he lined out to center for the second out of the inning. That brought Shohei Ohtani to the plate with the game on the line and the best hitter in the game came through with a walk-off single to give Los Angeles the win on the day and a series victory over Cincinnati.

 88.
Notes Worth Noting

 89.
Cincinnati is now 3-15 over their last 18 games.

 90.
Hunter Greene continues to pitch well and he continues to get very little run support for all of his efforts. His ERA is now 3.22 on the season through 58.2 innings where he has 66 strikeouts.

 91.
The Reds went 1-12 with runners in scoring position. The Dodgers only went 1-9.

 414.

The Cincinnati Reds are cold. Real cold. They will enter the series finale in Los Angeles later this afternoon with a record of 3-14 over their last 17 games. They’ve fallen to last place, a game-and-a-half back of the St. Louis Cardinals for the 4th spot in the division and 8.5 games back of the first place Milwaukee Brewers. We still aren’t finished with the third week of May.

 415.
But while the team as a whole is cold, not everyone on the team is. Tyler Stephenson was hitting .211/.321/.380 on May 5th after he started the month 0-6. Since then he’s hit .368/.385/.632 with four doubles and two home runs in 12 games and raised his season OPS by over 100 points.

 416.
Stephenson isn’t alone in that stretch. Jeimer Candelario began May by going 2-13 in the first four games of the month. But since then he’s hit .326/.341/.512 with five doubles and a homer in the 11 games.

 417.
Then there’s this afternoon’s starting pitcher. Hunter Greene has allowed five runs over his last four starts, posting a 1.82 ERA in 24.2 innings. He’s given up just one home run in that stretch and has his season ERA down to 3.27.

 418.
Of course, there’s an opposite site of this and that’s the players who are cold, and it might start with the guy who got out to the best start of the season. Spencer Steer went 3-4 on April 20th and raised his OPS to .999 that day. In the 25 games since then he’s gone 13-90 while hitting .144/.250/.222 and watched his OPS drop from .999 to .706.

 419.
Maybe it should begin with some of the relievers. Alexis Diaz has been downright bad this season (and that dates back to last season, too). The Reds closer has a 7.47 ERA this year with 12 walks and three hit batters in 15.2 innings.

 420.
The team’s set up man isn’t doing so hot, either. Fernando Cruz was outstanding in April as he allowed two runs and had a 1.59 ERA. But in May his ERA is 10.57 and he’s got seven walks in 7.2 innings pitched as his ERA has ballooned up to 5.21 on the year.

 421.
Will Benson, who got out to a poor start in 2023 and was sent back to Triple-A before returning and crushing the ball over the final four months of the season for the Reds, is out to another poor start in 2024. He hasn’t had a multi-hit game since April 29th. He went 5-12 in March. Since the start of April he’s hit .174/.269/.348 in 156 plate appearances.

 422.
And then there’s just the outright confusing situation revolving around how Mike Ford was not good enough to be on the club two-and-a-half weeks ago, but one injury turned him into an every day player who has been inserted regularly into the 3-spot of the lineup. And he’s been there despite the fact that he’s hit .175/.195/.300 through 41 plate appearances with the club.

 423.
Things don’t exactly get a lot easier moving forward over the next week. After the Reds finish up their series in Los Angeles they’ll head back to Cincinnati and after having Monday off, they’ll host the San Diego Padres and then get another series against the Dodgers. They get a short reprieve when the Cardinals come to town for a 3-game series, but then the Reds head off to Chicago to face the surging Cubs. A short series with Colorado is then followed up by hosting the Cubs and Guardians before heading off to Milwaukee.

 424.
While there was a lot of talk about how tough May would be on the schedule – and boy was it tough on the Reds – the first half of June isn’t exactly a walk in the park, either. This team is going to have to turn things around and quickly or it’s going to be the middle of June and they’re going to be looking at being entirely eliminated from playoff contention with no hope short of a miracle occurring.

 475.
With their 14th loss in the past 17 games, the Reds fall to eight games under .500 and are firmly in last place in the National League Central, 8 1/2 games behind first-place Milwaukee. It’s too early to run up the white flag, but this team is going to have to figure out a way to reverse these losing ways in very quick fashion. How they’ll do that? That’s anyone’s guess. If this so-called murderer’s row schedule of games against contenders ends up doing them in this early in the season, then they were never truly good enough to contend.

 476.
They’re only 3 1/2 games out of a wild-card berth at the moment. I know, yeah, yeah. But seeing that made me realize that my pessimism over this disastrous stretch may be a bit excessive. Some player or some facet of the team is going to have to morph into a leader, because right now, the roster and the fan base is looking around for it, and it’s under cover at the moment.

 477.
The Offense

 478.
Offensively, the Reds’ team hitting line in the box score told the story: 3-for-30 hitting, no walks and 11 strikeouts. Walker Buehler and three teammates combined on the dominant shutout.

 479.
Trailing 2-0 in the top of the fifth, the Reds’ Jake Fraley hit a ball to left-center on which the Dodgers’ left fielder and center fielder nearly collided trying to make the catch. The ball got through them and to the wall, with Fraley ending up at third on what was scored a one-out triple. But Jeimer Candelario popped out foul to the catcher, and Jonathan India grounded out to second to end that threat.

 480.
Jacob Hurtubise’s first major-league hit was the team’s first of the game, a two-out third-inning single. It was a legit, well-hit ball to right-center field.

 481.
The Pitching

 482.
Reds’ pitchers’ cumulative box score line: 8 innings pitched, 6 hits, 3 walks, 8 strikeouts and 4 earned runs.

 483.
Starter Graham Ashcraft held the Dodgers hitless over the first 3 1/3 innings. But while doing so, he ran up his pitch count to 65 over the first three innings. Forty-one of the pitches were strikes, so statistically he wasn’t wild. He went to full counts on several hitters, though, thanks in part to Dodger hitters wasting many possible strikes on foul balls.

 484.
Ashcraft walked Freddie Freeman to lead off the fourth, and a subsequent one-out wild pitch sent Freeman to second. Teoscar Hernandez then also walked, putting two on with one out. Andy Pages then hit a single to center, scoring Freeman and sending Hernandez to third. Centerfielder Will Benson made an ill-advised throw to third to try to cut down Hernandez, allowing Pages to advance to second. Gavin Lux then hit a slow roller toward first base on which Hernandez scored to make it 2-0. Enrique Hernandez then struck out to end the inning, with Ashcraft at the 90-pitch mark.

 485.
In the bottom of the fifth, Miguel Rojas hit a one-out double to left. Ashcraft retired Shohei Ohtani, but Freeman drove a single to center to score Rojas and make it 3-0 Dodgers. Ashcraft finished the inning, with these as his final numbers for the day: 5 innings, 3 hits allowed, 3 walks, 5 strikeouts and 3 earned runs.

 486.
Righty Carson Spiers then entered the game and pitched the final three innings, allowing an eighth-inning run.

 487.
One Fan’s Thoughts

 488.
Perhaps you thought as I did before today’s game that the Reds are particularly vulnerable to lefthanded pitching. But using team OPS as the metric, it’s righthanded pitching that has dominated Reds hitting so far this season. Before today’s game, Cincinnati’s team OPS vs. righties was .652, ranking 28th of the 30 major-league teams. Against lefties, the team OPS was .682, ranking 18th out of 30 teams.

 489.
Reds starters had an ERA of 3.86, which will certainly play. But relievers’ cumulative ERA was 4.29, and that, again, must improve for a team that has intentions of contention.

 490.
Unfortunately, it does appear that what we’re seeing this year is a second developmental year for the majority of the young Reds players who emerged as major-league capable last year. Before the season, I never considered that this would happen this year. And the loss of Matt McLain is even more damaging than I ever imagined it would be.

 491.
The only aspect of the game the Reds are above average in at this point is starting pitching. If this team is going to win anything this year, the young starters will have to accelerate their development, because they’re the only group apparently capable of leading a sustained period of winning.

 597.
Graham Ashcraft

 598.
After strong starts against the Rangers and Padres, Graham Ashcraft struggled in back-to-back starts against the Diamondbacks, allowing three runs on six hits at GABP on May 8 and three runs on seven hits, including two home runs, in Arizona five days later. One of his issues has been that batters are just barreling up against him. His hard hit rate for the year is at 47.2%, which is the bottom eight percent of the league and eight percent higher than his hard hit rate in 2023. If there is one thing Ashcraft is still doing well, however, it’s that he’s forcing ground balls. He’s always been predominantly a ground ball pitcher, and this season is no exception. His GB% is in the 82nd percentile in MLB for 2024.

 599.
Lefties are crushing Ashcraft this season, with a .528 slugging percentage, and of course, the Dodgers have two of the best lefties in MLB at the top of their lineup in Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman.

 670.
Walker Buehler

 671.
29-year-old Walker Buehler recently made his first start for the Dodgers in 23 months. Buehler had Tommy John surgery in June 2022. However, it hasn’t been easy for the the right-hander in his return. He’s allowed three runs in each of the two starts he’s made, but the reason for the high ERA is that he’s only gone 4.0 and 3.1 innings in each of those starts. He’s also allowed three home runs in just 7.1 innings. Buehler did make six rehab starts throughout the month of April and allowed 10 earned runs over 21.2 innings for a 4.15 ERA.

 672.
In 2022, Buehler had pretty even splits against right-handed and left-handed hitters. This year, his sample size is still low, but lefties are hitting .529 with a 1.556 OPS against him in 18 plate appearances.

Two innings later they would pad their lead when Shohei Ohtani went deep off of Frankie Montas for a 2-run, opposite field home run that made it a 3-0 ball game.

 815.
The Reds would start to battle back the next inning. Jonathan India led off with a single, moved to second on a wild pitch, and then take third on a grounder to second base. India would then score when Spencer Steer hit a grounder to shortstop to cut into the Dodgers lead. The next inning began with a home run from Stuart Fairchild that made it a 1-run deficit for Cincinnati. An inning later it was Tyler Stephenson hitting a solo home run to tie the game up.

 816.
When the bottom of the 6th started the Reds replaced Frankie Montas as he had 98 pitches on the day and really labored early on before settling in a bit. Lucas Sims entered the game and tossed a shutout frame.

 817.
Fernando Cruz took over for Cincinnati in the 7th and found himself in trouble immediately as he gave up a leadoff single. He would turn around and strike out Mookie Betts, but Shohei Ohtani hit a hard grounder that was fielded by a diving Jeimer Candelario who came up firing to second base. Elly De La Cruz caught it, stepped on the bag, then fired the ball to first but it got by Candelario and went into the photo well – sending Ohtani to second base with two outs. An intentional walk to Freddie Freeman followed. Will Smith then singled in the go-ahead run before a wild pitch brought in another run as the Dodgers went up by two.

 818.
The next inning saw Cincinnati turn to Alexis Diaz and things kept on spiraling for Diaz and for the Reds. Andy Pages singled with one out and then Jason Heyward followed up with a 2-run home run that made it 7-3.

 819.
Key Moment of the Game
820.

 821.
It’s tough to pick one exact moment between the 7th and 8th inning that saw the Dodgers score two runs in each, but De La Cruz’s throw that put Ohtani on second base may have led to the intentional walk of Freddie Freeman, which then saw Will Smith come through with a go-ahead RBI hit. Maybe things are different if Cruz pitches to Freeman. But maybe they aren’t – he’s a pretty good hitter in his own right.

 822.
Notes Worth Noting

 823.
The “end” of the bullpen has been terrible this season. Fernando Cruz now has an ERA of 5.21. Alexis Diaz saw his ERA rocket up to 7.47. That’s not what you want to see from your closer and set up man.

 824.
Tyler Stephenson remains red hot. He’s have multi-hit games in his last four games in which he’s had a plate appearance. He’s hitting .317/.349/.561 in May through 43 plate appearances.

 936.
The first start back from the injured list for Montas went well as he allowed one earned run in 6.0 innings. The next time out things were going well until they weren’t and when they started going badly it happened quickly as he allowed five runs in the 5th inning and only recorded one out.

 937.
This season left-handed hitters have found a lot more success against Montas than righties have. And teams have tried stacking lefties in their lineup, too, as he’s face more of them than right-handed hitters. They walk at a good clip, make plenty of contact, and are hitting for moderate power. Righties aren’t doing much at all this season against Montas.

 1014.
It’s been an interesting season for Paxton so far. He’s walked more hitters than he’s struck out, but is 5-0 and has an ERA of 2.58. That doesn’t make a ton of sense, and if he continued to do that there’s almost no chance he’d keep his record and ERA in line. But he’s pitched better in May, walking just two batters and striking out seven in 12.2 innings against Atlanta and San Diego.

 1015.
Teams try to avoid sending left-handed hitters to the plate against Paxton. The ones who have faced him this year haven’t found much success. They are without an extra-base hit and are hitting just .259. Right-handed hitters have a lower average – just .213 so far – but they have walked more often than they’ve struck out. They have hit for more power than lefties against Paxton, but they haven’t hit for much of any power.

 1192.

The Cincinnati Reds had a bullpen day of sorts and used seven pitchers on the night. For the first eight innings of the game the Dodgers were kept off of the board before they would finally break through in the 9th. It wasn’t enough, though as the Reds topped Los Angeles 7-2 to pick up a win in the series opener.

 1222.
Cincinnati started the game off with a bang as Will Benson hit a 439-foot home run to begin the game. Elly De La Cruz followed up with a single and stole second before scoring on a double by Tyler Stephenson that made it 2-0.

 1223.
Two innings later it was De La Cruz getting things done once again. This time around he led off the 3rd with a ground-rule double before stealing third base and once again coming around to score on a hit by Stephenson – a single into center – to make it 3-0.

 1224.
Nick Martinez, who came into the game in the 3rd after Brent Suter, Emilio Pagan, and Justin Wilson kept Los Angeles off of the board in the first two innings. Martinez kept that going through the next two innings before Cincinnati added to their lead. Once again it was De La Cruz making things happening as he drew a 1-out walk and then stole 2nd and 3rd before scoring on a wild pitch 3rd strike that extended the inning, but made it 4-0.

 1225.
Martinez would keep things going as he kept the Dodgers off of the board through the 7th inning, firing off 5.0 innings of 1-hit, no-run baseball before turning the game over to Lucas Sims in the bottom of the 8th. He kept the shutout going with a perfect frame of work.

 1226.
The Reds offense kept on rolling in the 9th. Jeimer Candelario would double to start a rally that saw Santiago Espinal walk before an RBI double. Will Benson then walked to load the bases. Elly De La Cruz grounded into what would have been a force out at second, but the throw got away at the bag and everyone was safe (this was originally ruled an error on Mookie Betts but was changed to a single for De La Cruz). Mike Ford then capped off the inning with an RBI single, but Will Benson was out at the plate trying to score another run on the play. Still, it was 7-0 as the game headed to the bottom of the 9th.

 1227.
Up by a touchdown the Reds turned the inning over to Sam Moll. It wasn’t hit best outing as he walked Mookie Betts and gave up a single to pinch-hitter Andy Pages before he would strike out Miguel Rojas. Cincinnati then turned to Buck Farmer to try and complete the shutout. He would strike out the first hitter he saw, but a walk followed to load the bases for Gavin Lux and he came through with a 2-run single to put the Dodgers on the board. Farmer ended the game a minute later when he struck out Chris Taylor and give the Reds a 7-2 victory.

 1228.
Key Moment of the Game
1229.

 1230.
The top of the 9th inning that saw the Reds score three runs and turn a 4-0 game into a 7-0 one. With the Dodgers offense, being in slam range doesn’t seem like the most unlikely of scenarios they could reach but being down by seven felt like it really put the game out of reach.

 1231.
Notes Worth Noting

 1232.
Elly De La Cruz went 4-4 with a walk, double, four steals, three runs scored, and an RBI. He now has 30 stolen bases on the season. The next closest player in baseball has 17. Only three players even have half as many steals as De La Cruz. Only 12 teams have at least 30 steals, and one of those teams is the Reds (duh). He raised his average 19 points and his OPS 37 points on the night.

 1233.
Tyler Stephenson remained hot. He’s had multiple hits in three straight games in which he’s had an at-bat (he entered the game on Wednesday but didn’t register an at-bat). After a bit of a slow start in April, he’s hit .311/.380/.489 in 15 games played since April 24th.

 1234.
St. Louis did not play on Thursday. With the Reds win it moves them ahead of the Cardinals by a half game and gets Cincinnati out of a tie for last place in the division.

 1235.
The Dodgers haven’t lost by at least five runs since April 19th.

 1257.

The Cincinnati Reds (18-25) continue their tour of the west coast with a four-game weekend series with the Los Angeles Dodgers (29-16). It hasn’t gone well for the Reds, as they’ve lost four of the last 14 games. It doesn’t get any easier either, as the Dodgers come into the series with the second-best record in the National League and a sizable first place lead in the NL West.

 1258.
The Reds will start an opener in Brent Suter, with Nick Martinez expected to pitch after Suter. The Dodgers will counter with Tyler Glasnow. First pitch is at 10:10 PM EDT.

Five of the Dodgers regular position players are left-handed hitters (It is four tonight–Dave Roberts gave lefty Max Muncy the night off). Suter is much better against lefties than right-handed batters. Righties are hitting almost 100 points better against him and also walk 11 percent of the time compared to zero walks to lefty batters.

 1415.
Nick Martinez will follow Suter. He’s pitched well in relief this month, allowing only one run on three hits in 5.1 innings over three appearances. Unlike Suter, Martinez fares better against right-handed hitters. allowing 18 hits and 9 runs to righties compared to 15 runs and 22 hits, including two home runs, allowed to lefties. The more times Martinez faces batters, the more likely his opponents score off him (.440/.462/.560 the third time through the lineup), so this is what the Reds may be trying to avoid with the opener.

 1416.
Tyler Glasnow

 1417.
In his first season with the Dodgers, Glasnow has been really good. He’s only had one bad start so far in 2024, giving up six runs in 5.0 innings to the Washington Nationals on April 15. He doesn’t walk batters and he’s a strikeout machine. Glasnow has struck out 10 batters in three of his last four starts and ranks in the 95th percentile for K% and the 75th percentile for Whiff% across all of MLB. When batters do make contact against him, they mostly hit ground balls. Glasnow’s GB% is 46.1% compared to only 23.4% for fly balls. His splits don’t give an edge to either lefties or righties either. He’s simply getting nearly everyone out this season.

 1564.

 1565.

The Cincinnati Reds haven’t won a playoff series since 1995. That’s the longest active streak of not advancing in the playoffs among the big four professional sports in America. It’s not a streak you want to be the leader in. The Reds are also currently in last place in the National League Central while sitting at 2-11 over their last 13 games. Things are not going well in 2024 for the club that is in their third rebuild in the last 12 years.

 1566.
This season the Reds have certainly dealt with some injuries. Matt McLain, who was arguably their best player in 2023, hasn’t play a game and if he does get on the field it’ll likely only be for the final month of the season. Brandon Williamson just began a rehab stint this week and hasn’t pitched since the middle of March. TJ Friedl has played a handful of games after a broken wrist in the spring and in the last week a broken thumb placing him back on the injured list. And then there was the failed PED test by Noelvi Marte that’s led to an 80-game suspension.

 1567.
It’s fair to say that the club isn’t near, or anywhere near what the front office felt would be full strength over the first six weeks of the season.

 1568.
It’s also fair to say that among the guys on the team that most of them have not played well, or relatively close to it. Two every day players are hitting at an above-average rate – Elly De La Cruz and Spencer Steer. Two other guys who play semi-regularly are also hitting above-average with Tyler Stephenson and Jake Fraley both having an OPS+ over 100.

 1569.
Free agent signee Jeimer Candelario got out to a poor start, but he’s picked things up in May and his OPS+ is nearly up to league average. But once you get beyond there, it’s a lot of real bad hitting.

 1570.
Will Benson, who got out to a slow start in 2023 and was sent back to the minors before figuring it out and crushing the ball over the final four-and-a-half months is back out to a slow start this season. He’s hitting .194 with a .287 on-base percentage. His strikeout rate of 40.1% is far and away the worst in Major League Baseball this season. No one else is even at 35% who currently qualifies for the batting title. Jonathan India is getting on base some, but he’s hitting .228 with no power. Santiago Espinal, Stuart Fairchild, Nick Martini, Luke Maile, Mike Ford, and the now on the injured list Christian Encarnacion-Strand have all failed to reach the .600 OPS mark.

 1571.
To be frank – this offense has been terrible. They are 29th in batting average, 25th in on-base percentage, 24th in slugging percentage, and 28th in OPS+. They’ve been the best team on the bases this season, though, and that has helped them score more runs than their pure hitting stats would suggest. They’re still below-average when it comes to scoring runs, but they aren’t near the bottom of the league.

 1572.
But it’s not just offensive problems that the team has run into this season. Closer Alexis Diaz has an ERA of 6.75 and hasn’t been able to throw strikes for nearly four consecutive months of baseball. Justin Wilson’s ERA is 6.10. Lucas Sims has an ERA of 5.84. Emilio Pagan and Fernando Cruz have been inconsistent at best and have ERA’s of 4.67 and 4.50. Overall the bullpen has been about league average when it comes to runs allowed, but when the offense has struggled every run they’ve allowed has felt more impactful because the offense hasn’t been able to get it done.

 1573.
With the team in a spiral of sorts, are changes needed? I think the easy answer is: Of course.

 1574.
The more difficult answer is that of a question of what the changes would be. The players simply need to start playing better. How they is accomplished is a far more difficult thing. Teams will sometimes fire the manager to try and set expectations that “this isn’t acceptable”. That seems unlikely given that David Bell is still under contract for multiple years. Maybe someone(s) on the coaching staff will be let go if things don’t turn around quickly as a “this isn’t acceptable” situation.

 1575.
Offensively, some players could be optioned back to the minor leagues. Will Benson has options left. So does Jonathan India. Some of the guys on the bench do, too. But who do you call up in their place? Most of the guys in Triple-A that are hitting well are in their late 20’s and early 30’s. While possible those guys could be late bloomers or even just guys who could have one of those strange magical seasons, it’s unlikely. And for the most part, they aren’t on the 40-man roster, either.

 1576.
Livan Soto is 23-years-old and he’s hitting .324/.412/.465 with Louisville. He’s played both shortstop, second base, and third base over the bulk of his minor league career. He’s having a good run in his first 18 games in the organization, but he’s also a career .248/.342/.338 career hitter in the minor leagues – though to be fair he has gotten better as he’s gotten older, but he’s never really been good at any stop he’s spent a real amount of time at, either. Is he really going to be an upgrade at this point?

 1577.
It just seems that at this moment there isn’t much to look at in the minor leagues as a potential near-term answer to the offensive issues the club needs to fix. When it comes to the bullpen it almost feels like it doesn’t matter. When push came to shove two weeks ago, the Reds optioned Sam Moll to the minor leagues despite having allowed two earned runs since being acquired at last year’s trade deadline. He was the player who had options and they decided that sending down someone who had gotten the job done was a better plan than exposing someone else to waivers. Unless someone gets hurt it doesn’t seem like the club plans to explore calling up someone from the minors to pitch in relief.

 1578.
There may not really be any answers other than “wait it out and hope guys play to the back of their baseball cards”, so to speak. The Bats don’t seem to have any bats that should be expected to step in and be starting caliber bats right now. Not that the Reds are flush with those at the big league level, either, but they’ll stick with what they’ve got if there’s not an obvious answer. And they’ve tied their own hands with regards to the bullpen, too. The only guys with options are Sam Moll, and then the guys they use as their closer and set up guy. They’re not getting sent down.

 1579.
With all of that said – at least publicly – you have to wonder what the front office and manager are thinking about all of the losing right now. David Bell has repeatedly said in the last two weeks despite winning all of two games that the team is playing well. Nick Krall, the President of Baseball Operations didn’t seem like he was pressed too much about the losing when speaking with Mark Sheldon of Reds.com yesterday.

 1580.
You don’t have to go all Ron Washington on a player(s) in the media. Those things can be discussed in the clubhouse and managers office or on the field before the game or even in the dugout during the game. And maybe they are. But what the spokesmen for the club are telling the public during a tailspin doesn’t seem to be sitting all that well with the public. And when it’s coming from a franchise that hasn’t advanced in the playoffs in nearly 30 years, even if these particular people haven’t been around for all of it, the vibes as the kids say, are off.

 1598.

For the first seven innings of the game Andrew Abbott and Brandon Pfaadt dominated the opposing lineups with the lone exception of a solo home run by each team. But when the game turned over to the bullpen it was the Cincinnati Reds who couldn’t get the job done as Fernando Cruz gave up the go-ahead run on back-to-back 2-out doubles, while the Arizona Diamondbacks bullpen tossed two shutout innings to seal the game and earn a series victory.

 1628.
Arizona struck first in this one when Christian Walker led off the 2nd inning with a home run. Brandon Pfaadt took over from there and had a no-hitter going into the 5th inning. He would keep that going through the first two hitters, but then Santiago Espinal broke up the no-hitter and the shutout with a solo home run into the seats in left-center to tie the game up.

 1629.
After Espinal’s home run it was back to a pitching duel between Andrew Abbott and Brandon Pfaadt, with both guys throwing up zeroes in the 6th and 7th innings as the game remained knotted up at 1-1. After 93 pitches in his seven innings, Pfaadt exited the game and was replaced by Ryan Thompson to begin the 8th inning. The Reds countered by calling on Elly De La Cruz off of the bench to pinch hit for Luke Maile, but he would ground out to begin the inning. A strikeout followed, but Will Benson singled into right to put the go-ahead run on base. It wasn’t to be for Cincinnati in the 8th as a pop up in foul territory ended the top of the inning.

 1630.
Andrew Abbott, like Pfaadt before him, was finished after the 7th inning and manager David Bell turned things over to Fernando Cruz. He’d retire the first two batters of the inning before Arizona called on Pavin Smith to pinch hit and he came through with a double to the wall in right and was immediately pinch run for by Corbin Carroll. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. followed up with a blooper down the right field line that fell in front of a sliding Jake Fraley to put the Diamondbacks in the lead. A strikeout would end the inning and send the game to the 9th.

 1631.
Paul Sewald entered the game out of Arizona’s bullpen for the 9th to face the middle of Cincinnati’s lineup. Mike Ford hit a 106 MPH low liner that Christian Walker snagged on one bounce at first and then he trotted to the bag for the out. A pop up followed, leaving the game up to Jeimer Candelario. He hit a shallow fly ball to right field on the first pitch he saw to end the game as the Reds dropped yet another series.

 1634.
Lourdes Gurriel Jr.’s double that gave Arizona a lead in the bottom of the 8th inning.

 1635.
Notes Worth Noting

 1636.
With Elly De La Cruz entering the game as a pinch hitter (and then taking over at shortstop in the field) he has still played in every game this season.

 1637.
Andrew Abbott lowered his ERA to 3.06 on the year.

 1638.
The Reds are 2-12 since the last day of April and they are in last place all on their own in the division, though a Cardinals loss tonight against the Angels would put the two clubs in a tie.
